RUSSELL HUSTON Born: May 20, 1915; in Braceville, IL Died: January 4, 2015; in Morris, IL Russell “Mike” Huston, age 99, of Braceville, IL, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2015, at the Morris Hospital in Morris, IL. Born May 20, 1915, in Braceville, to the late Russell A. and Rose E. (nee Powell) Huston. Graduated class of 1933 from the Gardner-South Wilmington High School. In his youth, he farmed on the family farm in Braceville. He then retired in 1980 from Caterpillar, Inc. in Joliet, IL after thirty years of employment. Member of the United Methodist Church in Braceville and a lifetime member of the Braidwood Recreational Club. He was a volunteer for the Braceville Fire Department for over forty years and he was also a mason. He was a champion bowler and horseshoe pitcher. Avid Chicago Cubs and Bulls fan.

Surviving are his wife, Helen (nee Peterson) Huston of Braceville, whom he married February 22, 1947 in Braceville; two children, Glen (Carol) Huston of Joliet and Janet Cassida of Villa Grove, IL; six grandchildren, Heather (Tim) Qualls, Tom (Jenny) Jasper, Jr., Cecile Cassida, Abigail (Anthony) Bliss, Suzanna Cassida, and Daniel Cassida; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Audrey Endrst of Coal City, IL; two sisters-in-law, Irene and Jane Huston; numerous nieces and nephews; and special care givers, Cindy and Karen.

Preceding him in death were four brothers, LaVerne “Buster”, Ray, Melvin “Spud”, and William “Sam” Huston; and one sister, Rosellyn Huston.

Funeral services will be at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd. & Crematory, Braidwood Chapel, Thursday, January 8, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation two hours preceding services. Interment Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, Braceville.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris with Rev. Steve Cook officiating.

Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born October 30, 1931, in Morris she was the daughter of Julius and Victoria(Claypool)Petersen.

She married Peter Matuszewski on July 21, 1954, in Joliet. They spent their entire married life in Morris. She was a member of Living Waters Church in Morris.

Alice was an avid bingo player and she and Pete loved to travel especially to Las Vegas. She worked at the Joliet Arsenal until they closed. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of sixty years; her children, Mike(Janice)Matuszewski, Dianne Zullo and Pamela Oaks all of Morris, Darlene Morrison of Clarksville, TN and Mary (Jake) Glazner of

Liam Declan Nolan was born Friday to parents David and Erin. Weighing in at 7 pounds, 10 ounces, Liam was the first baby born in 2015 at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers in Morris.

Erin Nolan was born and raised in Ottawa, which is where her son will head when they leave the hospital. Her husband also was born at Morris Hospital and was raised in the Mazon and Morris area.

Liam is the third grandson for each side’s parents, who will have to wait a little longer to see if they can get a granddaughter.

MORRIS – When David and Erin Nolan of Ottawa take their new son Liam Declan Nolan home, it will be to a familiar room.

His room is the same his mother was taken home to when she was born.

“My dad is the emotional one,” Erin said. “He brought up that it was the same room he took me home to.”

David Nolan said he tried to sell his home for a year, and right around when the couple found out they were expecting, an offer was made.

“We’ve moved two houses since she found out she was pregnant,” David Nolan said.

“We moved her parents to their new house, and we’ve moved into her parents’ old home.”

Liam was welcomed into the world at 3:34 p.m. Friday at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, a full week earlier than his Jan. 9 due date. Liam was the first baby born in 2015 at Morris Hospital.

“We were praying to start a family soon,” Erin Nolan said.

“Liam has just been a blessing.”

The 7 pound, 10 ounce bundle of joy missed Christmas, but the family’s hospital room was filled with gifts from the community for being the first baby.

The family received books and a baby’s first book bag from the Coal City Public Library District, a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector from the Coal City Fire Protection District, baby’s first photo shoot from Dutch Girl Photography, a quilt from First Presbyterian Church, a threemonth family membership at

City Council OKs annual abatement

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris City Council on Monday approved an ordinance abating the property tax levied for 2014 to pay the principal and interest on the general obligation waterworks and sewerage bonds.

Mayor Richard Kopczick said in 2006 a bond was issued to pay for the extension of pipe and water mains to the east side sewage treatment plant and an ordinance must be passed each year abating the tax, otherwise it will go on the tax bill.

“In 2006, we issued the bonds and promised it would not be on the back of the tax payers,” Kopczick said. “We said we would use an alternate revenue source, and we have.”

In 2006, the council agreed to the issuance of up to $7.6 million in revenue bonds to finance the treatment plant, trunk sewer lines and related water mains.

Kopczick said the bonds were refinanced in 2012, due to lower interest rates, which saved the city more than $350,000 in interest payments.

He said they created an escrow account to pay off the 2006 issuance.

City Attorney Scott Belt said the way the bonds were written, the city is obligated to abate them.

“They are filed with the

county recorder, so we are obligated to abate the bonds,” Belt said during the finance committee meeting held before the council meeting Monday.

Belt said the 2006 bonds will be paid off in December of this year, but the 2012 bonds still will have to be abated each year.

The city has paid the bonds with revenues generated through water and sewer bills.

In other financial business, the council also voted unanimously to renew the city’s liability insurance package and workman’s compensation insurance with Norther Insurance Group, despite an increase in co st.

Kopczick said there was a 15 percent increase in the workman’s compensation insurance, 7 percent of the increase is due to payroll increases for all employees, and the remainder is due to claims that have been tendered and typical annual rate increases.

The cost of workman’s comp will now be $170,266.

The liability insurance will see a 35 percent increase bringing the cost to $172,697.

Kopczick said the increase is due in part to reserves set aside and claims not settled.

“If the claims are found in the city’s favor, the cost would be less and the money would go toward next year’s insurance,” Kopczick said.

“If people in your neighborhood are elderly and live alone, reach out to them and give your contact information in case they need something,” Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said.

The National Weather Service is calling for brutal wind chills through Thursday, according to a news release from the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency. Winds on Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday are expected to cause the snow from Monday night to blow and drift, making travel dangerous.

In addition, wind chills might be from 20 below to 35 below zero Tuesday through Thursday morning, according to the release.

“We’re ready,” Grundy County engineer Craig Cassem said of the expected snowfall Monday night.

“Snowbirds,” or the highway Department’s extra parttime snowplow drivers, were taking on overnight hours and the county’s full-time staff will be onhand again starting at 4 a.m.

To handle the continued blowing snow and below freezing temperatures expected during the next few days, Cassem said drivers will continue to be plowing and salting.

“We have plenty of salt because we haven’t used a lot this year,” he said.

Since not everyone can stay indoors to protect themselves from the weather, Dite advises those who are driving to stock their cars with supplies just in case.

Have extra clothing in your vehicle so you can layer for warmth if you are stuck on the road from an accident or run out of gas. This includes sweatshirts, long underwear, socks, boots, gloves and a coat, he said.

In addition, vehicles should not get lower than half of a tank of gas.

“Fill up instead of waiting,” Dite said.

Travelers should also allow for more time to get where they need to be, and should have patience while driving in winter weather and traffic. Dite said to plan routes ahead of time and check traffic hotlines for traffic conditions and detours.

Dynamic Fitness Center in Coal City has expanded MORRIS DAILY HERALD COAL CITY – Last month, Dynamic Fitness Center, 995 E. Division St. in Coal City, officially celebrated its 2,000 square foot expansion with a ribbon-cutting and open house event.

Coal City Mayor Neil Nelson and Village Clerk Pam Noffsinger, along with members of the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce toured the new facility, which now totals 8,500 square feet, according to a news release. Those who toured also met with trainers to learn about the new equipment.

Born June 8, 1921, in La Salle, Illinois, Margaret was a daughter of the late Nick and Edith (Gervase)Brancato.

The family moved to Coal City in 1934.

Margaret graduated from the Coal City High School with the class of 1938.

She worked as a clerk at the Atlas

During World War II Margaret worked as a clerk in the Coal City Post Office until Edwin was released from the service. In 1951, Margaret was employed as a typist in the Accounts Payable Department for Uniroyal Chemical Company and was promoted to Supervisor and Executive Accountant, retiring after31 years of service in 1982. Margaret was an active member of Assumption Parish, where she was an original member of The Martha’s and honored as Woman of the Year in 2002. She was also a member of the Coal City Women’s Club.

Surviving are her husband, Edwin P. Viglia, Sr.; one son, Edwin (Susan) P. Viglia Jr.; and one daughter, Janis (A.J.) Gagliardo; four grandchildren, Jill Gagliardo of Seattle, Washington,

Deanna (Gary) Cisneros of Swansboro, North Carolina, Edwin (Carolyn) Viglia, III of Kankakee, Illinois and Aron (Lawanda Velez) Gagliardo of Coal City, Illinois; four great grandchildren, Abigail and Nicholas Viglia and Isabella and Gabriel Cisneros, with another expected in April; her sister, Edith Kinsella of Wilmington, Illinois; and sister-in-law, Avis Brancato; as well as numerous niece and nephews.

Traffic deaths down; credit the polar vortex The number of traffic fatality figures for Illinois appears to have taken a significant nosedive compared to 2013.

At 2:30 p.m. New Year’s Eve, the Illinois Department of Transportation’s online report listed 909 fatalities for 2014. That’s 79 fewer than the 988 fatalities at the same time the year before (although 2013 ended with 991 total fatalities, according to IDOT.) Illinois’ modern-day low for traffic fatalities was 911 in 2009. The numbers have risen since then, but have stayed below 1,000 a year.

To what can we attribute last year’s decline in traffic deaths?

In a news release issued Dec. 18, IDOT mentioned several possibilities: • Increased traffic law enforcement by State Police and local authorities.

• Campaigns to encourage motorists to drive sober and wear seat belts.

• Roadside safety checks.

• Traffic safety messages imparted in IDOT’s website series, “The Driving Dead,” starring Michael Rooker, which was unveiled last summer.

All those efforts are worthwhile – even the zombie-filled adventures of Rooker and other characters, we suppose.

However, not mentioned in IDOT’s release was a huge reason for fewer traffic fatalities in 2014 – the polar vortex, which blasted Illinois with 11 severe storms last winter.

In early May, after one-third of 2014 had passed, 242 people had lost their lives – 88 fewer than the previous year’s 330 fatalities on the same date. It’s also possible that the ban on drivers using handheld cellphones, which took effect the first of the year, could have been a factor.

And it’s feasible the snow, slippery ice, and bone-chilling cold might have discouraged drivers from making road trips during certain times in January, February and March. Indeed, the U.S. economy shrank at an annualized rate of 2.9 percent in the January-March period, largely because bad winter weather kept people at home much more than usual.

To be sure, all human-inspired campaigns to save lives on the road have merit and should continue.

But the polar vortex’s role should not be discounted. After all, it’s not nice to ignore Mother Nature.

MORRIS – Talk about ringing in the new year on a good note.

The Morris wrestling team hosted Ottawa, LaSalle-Peru and Pontiac on Saturday in the Morris New Year’s Quad, and the Redskins walked away with three victories. Morris defeated Ottawa, 42-40, downed LaSalle-Peru, 42-30 and topped Pontiac, 36-34.

It wasn’t a case of a few wrestlers dominating for Morris. It was a team effort up and down the lineup.

“Our young guys and our seniors stepped up big for us in all three duals,” Morris coach Jon Lanning said. “Our young freshmen and our seniors won matches they could win and kept other matches close and are doing a better job of not giving up pin points.

“Our tough schedule paid dividends for us today. We were in a lot of close matches, and because we have wrestled great competition and hung in there, we won the close matches today.”

Against Ottawa, Zach Cortez started things off for Morris by getting a forfeit win at 120 for a 6-0 lead. Ottawa’s Jacob McCarois defeated Marques Kjellesvik by major decision, 12-2, to pull Ottawa to within 6-4. Micah Kruger of Ottawa then pinned Dominic Byerly in 2:56 at 132 and the Pirates’ Evan Schaibley pinned Ethan Elleson in 3:28. Daniel Close of Ottawa completed a three-pin run for the Pirates by defeating Merrick Hairapetian in 3:37 at 145 to give Ottawa a 22-6 lead.

Then, it was Morris’ turn to ride the six-point train.

A.J. Vota got things started things off in the 152-pound bout by pinning Cody Kramer in 2:43 before Cody Baldridge pinned Michael Ortiz in 1:43 to pull Morris to within, 22-18.

Emmet Chouinard then won by forfeit to put the Redskins up, 24-22, and Ryan Olsen pinned

Bears can’t afford to keep Marshall BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Depending on whose analysis of Brandon Marshall’s contract you believe, Marshall may be a lot less expensive than Jay Cutler to get rid of, and his departure would serve the Bears a great deal better than Cutler’s.

Cutler is certainly overpaid and overrated as a quarterback, and he will never be voted Mr. Congeniality by his teammates, but he does have his supporters, and he’s not a problem in the locker room.

I’m sure there are Bears players who are envious or jealous or both of Cutler for his contract and A-list lifestyle, but Cutler actually avoids the spotlight rather than hogging it, and there doesn’t seem to be any pocket of dissent or dislike among teammates who would just as soon see him leave.

On the other hand, when it comes to Marshall, more than a few of his teammates would gladly kick in for his bus ticket out of town.

How will we know whether the Bears get it right in their hires of a new general manager and head coach?

If one of their first official moves isn’t a trade or the release of Marshall, you can assume the Bears are in trouble again.

Marshall is one of the three or four best wide receivers in football – no question about that.

So how come in nine seasons and with five Pro Bowl selections Marshall never has appeared in a playoff game and

both the Broncos and Dolphins couldn’t wait to get him out of their huddles and locker rooms?

The answer is because he is a nightmare off the field who spends almost all of his time making sure the spotlight is on him and no one else.

One Bears veteran described Marshall’s presence as exhausting.

Another player told me he

didn’t think the locker room problems were as serious as the media has painted them, but he did think coach Marc Trestman’s and his assistants’ biggest mistake in getting control of the room was they were afraid of trying to handle Marshall.

How are you supposed to coach a player or trust a teammate when you never know what he’s going to say or do next?

Then there’s the question of production.

Marshall will be 31 in March as he heads into his 10th NFL season, but he is a phenomenal athlete who always seems to keep himself in top shape.

Before 2014, his worst season since his rookie campaign with 61 catches for 721 yards, Marshall never had missed more than two games in a seasons, and he had a string of 65 consecutive starts before missing the last three games of the season. A gimpy ankle in at least three or four other games he did play in also limited Marshall.

It is reasonable to assume Marshall is capable of bouncing back physically for another big season or two.

But is all the selfishness and distraction he brings with him worth it for a team desperate for a new start and a breath of fresh

air in the locker room?

Overthecap.com is one of several reputable websites that track NFL player contracts, and it describes Marshall’s extension he received from general manager Phil Emery in April as a $30 million deal with a $7.5 million signing bonus and the 2014 and 2015 base salaries guaranteed at $7.3 million and $7.5 million.

But it says Marshall’s 2015 salary is only guaranteed if he’s still on the roster March 13.

Should the Bears release Marshall before March 13, they will owe him nothing, but they will take a $5.6 million cap hit.

Certainly the Bears could try to trade Marshall, but what they’ll find is a bare market not at all to their liking.

Knowing what Marshall’s reign of narcissism has just done to Trestman and Emery, what NFL exec in his right mind is going to deal for him?

The biggest question facing the next GM and head coach of the Bears won’t be how can they afford to cut Marshall, it will be how can they afford to keep him?

What worked: In the Bears’ five wins, Jay Cutler threw 11 touchdowns and two interceptions, and those two picks came in one game. Moments were few and far between that Cutler resembled a $126 million quarterback, like his four touchdown throws against the 49ers, his deep pass to Alshon Jeffery in the win over the Falcons or picking apart the Vikings’ secondary in Week 11.

His accuracy (66 percent) and touchdown passes (28) were career-highs, but a lot of that completion percentage came from throwing 102 passes into the arms of running back Matt Forte.

What didn’t: Too often, we were reminded that Cutler is who he is, that Marc Trestman could not coach the bad throws and the poor decisions out of him. His downfield throwing took a big hit, as Cutler averaged only 6.8 yards a attempt, more than half a yard worse than 2013. He threw 18 interceptions and lost six fumbles.

In the Bears’ 11 losses, Cutler threw 16 picks. Several of those came at crucial times in close games, such as losses to Buffalo, Carolina and Miami.

16, didn’t provide one, averaging a paltry 4.6 yards a attempt, despite showing poise we didn’t see from Cutler on a consistent basis.

Moment that mattered: There are a lot of throws

Cutler would want back, and a lot of incomplete passes, picks and fumbles that epitomized the disappointing season, but having to pick one, the play against the Bills in the first game of the season still stands

out. Cutler scrambled, throwing across his body into the arms of 300-pound Bills defensive tackle Kyle Williams. The score was tied, and the Bears were driving, but that throw showed that all the expectations built up in the preseason meant little – Cutler still was going to make the game-changing mistakes that make you scratch your head. The Bills took the lead on the next drive and won in overtime. Losing at home to Buffalo in Week 1 turned out to not be a fluke but a sign of an awful season to come.

That is certainly the “play” that mattered, but we should also point out the off-the-field moments that defined the dysfunction, such as offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer criticizing Cutler to NFL Network – then apologizing to Cutler – and the next week, when Trestman benched Cutler for Clausen.

What’s to come: The current biggest question within the Bears’ organization is who will run the team going forward from the GM and head coach positions, and when those are filled, the new front office will have to decide what to do with Cutler. Trade him? Cut him?

Make him compete to start?

With a hefty salary cap number, Cutler is still the frontrunner to be under center for the Bears next season, but with yet another new offense.

STAFF REPORTS CHAMPAIGN – The Coal City wrestling team certainly didn’t take the holidays off.

The Coalers finished second at the 38-team St. Thomas More New Year Challenge last week. Coal City defeated El Paso, 34-24, lost to Sherard, 38-37, beat Murphysboro, 4619, thumped Cumberland, 65-9 and topped Vandalia, 48-27. In the quarterfinals, Coal City bounced Belleville Althoff, 39-34 before beating Murphysboro again in the semifinals, this time by a 47-27 score. In the title match, Coal City was beaten, 34-30, by Lena-Winslow.

Top wrestlers for the tournament for the Coalers were Cody Minnick, who went 9-0, and Corey Jurzak, Jake Frost, Joey Rivera and Jake Hiles all went 8-1.

“I am extremely proud of our team,” Coal CIty coach Mark Masters said. “We performed about as well as we could at this point of the season. Our seniors led us and our underclassmen fed off their performance.

“It was exciting to see our young guys perform well and handle the pressure that this nine-match tournament brings.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL Seneca 53, Serena 47: Despite trailing 27-20 at halftime, the Irish outscored Serena, 33-20, in the second half to secure the nonconference win.

Lyda Robinson led Seneca (6-10) with 20 points, while Paite Hacker made 9 of 11 free throws and finished with 13 points. Seneca made 13 of 15 free throws in the second half.

Reed-Custer 55, Gardner-South Wilmington 35: Sydney Perkins led G-SW (8-8) with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Kaylee Steichen had 10 points and five rebounds. Marlana Ferrari chipped in with eight points for the Panthers, who trailed by only three points at halftime.

DODGEBALL Coal City Fundraiser: For the 10th straight year, the Coal City baseball program will hold a dodgeball tournament to raise funds. The tournament will take place Feb. 8 and is open to any boy or girl second grade or older.

The cost is $48 per eight-person team, and there will be 20 teams maximum per session. Cost of admission to the event is $2 for students and $2 for adults. At the bridge table, a short cut – a short suit – will make you wealthier if – an important if – you have a fit with partner.

Look at today’s North hand. After partner opens one spade, what should North respond?

If you count shortage points, add three for a singleton when you have at least a nine-card fit. So, the North hand is worth 11 support points, which is ideal for a three-spade limit raise.

If you count losers, the North hand has eight: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs. (No suit has more than three losers.) Eight losers is also the number for a game-invitational limit raise.

Then South, who knows that his excellent diamond suit will provide discards, immediately uses Roman Key-Card Blackwood. North replies five hearts, showing two key-cards (two aces, or one ace and the trump king) and denying the trump queen. Now South knows that six spades is high enough.

West leads the club queen. What should declarer do?

The play ought to be straightforward. South should win with his club ace and draw two rounds of trumps.

When they break 3-1, he turns to diamonds, discarding dummy’s last two clubs as quickly as possible. Declarer ruffs his fourth diamond in the dummy, cashes the heart ace, trumps a heart back to hand and ruffs his remaining club in the dummy. Then he can claim, his hand containing two trumps and a high diamond. West takes only one trump trick.

Puzzling bladder conditions helped by several therapies Dear Doctor K: I have interstitial cystitis. Medications have helped, but not much. What else could help relieve my symptoms?

Dear Reader: Interstitial cystitis is a puzzling bladder condition in which the bladder wall becomes irritated or inflamed. We don’t know what causes the condition. Some doctors speculate that an infection, most likely with viruses, is responsible. However, I’m not aware of any good evidence in support of that.

The symptoms of interstitial cystitis are similar to those of a bacterial urinary tract infection. However, in interstitial cystitis, there is no bacterial infection, and the symptoms do not respond to antibiotic treatment.

Symptoms include frequent

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff urination, an intense urge to urinate and a burning sensation during urination. People may also experience pain, pressure or tenderness in the bladder area. In many patients, symptoms come and go. In others, symptoms continue to get worse.

In some people, interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that lasts for many years. In others, it disappears suddenly.

But symptoms may return again, even years after the first illness.

There is no therapy that cures the disorder, so the goal of treatment is to reduce symp-

toms. Often a person needs to try several therapies before finding the right combination: • DIETARY CHANGES. Caffeinated beverages, alcohol, chocolate, and spicy or high-acid foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes are some of many foods that can aggravate the condition. Each person needs to experiment to discover what she or he needs to avoid.

Smoking aggravates interstitial cystitis in some people, and quitting smoking can also help.

• BLADDER TRAINING. Patients can learn to reduce frequent urination by following a schedule for urinating.

You can think of it as “willing” the bladder to urinate less often. It is the same kind of discipline that works in people who have overactive bladder, a condition much more common

than interstitial cystitis. While bladder training cuts down on the frequent urination, unfortunately it doesn’t reduce the pain of urination.

• ORAL MEDICATIONS. Pentosan polysulfate sodium (Elmiron) is the only medication specifically approved for the treatment of interstitial cystitis. Other drugs not specifically approved for the condition also may offer relief.

They include analgesics (pain relievers), tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines and H2 blockers used to treat heartburn.

• BLADDER DISTENTION. Sterile water is used to stretch the bladder. This may allow the bladder to hold more urine and interfere with pain signals transmitted by nerves in the bladder.

• BLADDER INSTILLATION (bladder wash). The bladder is filled with a sterile solution containing one of a number of ingredients that work directly on the bladder wall to reduce inflammation and block pain. It may also prevent muscle contractions that cause pain, frequency and urgency of urination.

• ELECTRICAL NERVE STIMULATION. Mild electrical impulses are used to stimulate nerves to the bladder. The electrical pulses may increase blood flow to the bladder, strengthen pelvic muscles or trigger the release of substances that block pain.
