Mary M. Frederick (nee Dix) “Gramma Mary” passed away peacefully in the comfort of her late Channahon residence on Wednesday, January 28, 2015.

Born in Morris, the beloved daughter of the late Clarence and Edna (nee Thorsen) Dix. Mary is survived by her son, Tom Frederick; and her daughter, Cindy Sabino; dearly loved grandmother of Sheina, Erich, Adam Dietz, Sarah (Tim) Lacko, Samantha, Corina (Tim) Bedinger, Rory, Alan and the late Ryan; 11 great grandchildren also cherish her memory, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dear sister of Ruth (the late George) Lambrose, Dolores (the late Willis) Johnson and Donald (Shirley) Dix. Preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Ryan; and one great grandson, Adam.

A life long resident of Channahon, Mary truly was a “Golden Girl” at heart, she was a ray of sunshine and a shining star. Most of us will remember her sunny side up effervescence as she served us for 30+ years at our popular local Restaurant, Lonestar. She was also a long time employee at Uniroyal Tires. Mary dearly loved her family, her friends and her community. If she wasn’t working hard, she was dancing with joy, doing crossword puzzles, reading or browsing through the latest celebrity magazine taking in the fashion, news and gossip all the while sipping a cold Miller Lite.

Visitation for Mary M. Frederick will be held on Monday, February 2, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. until Prayer Service Begins at 7:30 p.m. at The Maple Funeral Home located at 24300 W. Ford Rd., Channahon.

POLICE REPORTS LOUIS J. STARK Born: July 5, 1929; in Joliet, IL Died: Jan. 28, 2015; in Braceville, IL Louis John “Skip” Stark, age 85, of Braceville, IL, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at his home.

Born July 5, 1929, in Joliet, IL and was married to Lorraine on December 6, 1952. He was honorably discharged from the Army after the Korean Conflict. He was a hardworking family man, working as a Local #150 Operating Engineer, farming, and raising his animals and birds. He was known by many to be outspoken and somewhat “opinionated”, appearing on the outside to be hard-nosed, but actually had a very big heart.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis; and mother, Dora; wife, Lorraine (nee Jewett); sisters, Betty Kildahl, Marion Voight, and Dora Jean Zan; and grandson, Sean Mudd.

He is survived by daughter, Debra (Charles) Mudd; daughter, Cathy (Kenneth) Ballenger; grandchildren, Sarah (Michael) Cox, Stephanie Bradley, Cody Ballenger, Drew Ballenger, Holly (Ian) Mellendorf, and Kiley (Michael) Haberzetle; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Joan Lee; and brother, John Senffner.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Private funeral services will be held. Inurnment Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, Braceville.

by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail Thursday on a Livingston County warrant.

BRIEF Three Rivers Festival seeks grant proposals CHANNAHON – Proposals for funding are now being accepted for the Channahon’s Three Rivers Festival Community Support Grant program.

From the 2014 festival, 12 organizations received a total of $4,700 in funding. A maximum of $500 is available for each grant. Grant

proposals are due by Feb. 13.

The grants are in addition to festival proceeds which are allocated to the four festival sponsoring organizations: Channahon Lions Club, Channahon Fire Department, Channahon Baseball League, and Chanooka Braves Youth Football Organization.

A splash of color Morris Watercolor Guild presents pop-up galleries in empty downtown stores

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Art is popping up in downtown Morris as the Morris Watercolor Guild creates pop-up art galleries to showcase the work they do, as well as offer works for sale.

Most Fridays the Morris Watercolor Guild can be found in the fellowship hall at the United Methodist Church of Morris with brushes in hand creating their next work of art. The creation of the popup gallery concept gives them additional outlets to showcase their creativity.

“I got the idea from other artists in other areas,” member Barb Hildy of Morris said.

“When a store sits empty, a gallery can pop up, making downtown stores look like they are being occupied.”

Hildy said she first saw the idea in Kentucky when she was on a spring break vacation and the idea stuck in her head.

The first pop-up gallery is in the storefront that used to house Sweet Tooth at 206 Liberty St. in downtown Morris.

Sweet Tooth has moved to another location on Washington Street.

one of the original members of the guild that just celebrated its 10-year anniversary last year, said she liked the idea of having the original watercolor pieces on display in the store windows for more of the public to see.

Currently their art is on display in the basement of the church where they meet, at UC Davis-Callahan Funeral Home in Morris, and each spring at the Morris Area Public Li-

brary.

The guild is always looking for new members and is open to anyone with any skill level, or no skill level at all in the use of water media in art.

Dorrough has been painting for about 15 years and said she loves the guild because she gains energy and ideas from the members when they get together to paint.

Hildy said when she read about the guild in the newspaper she decided to stop and see what they were about.

“I showed up without a brush, paper or paint,” she said. “I just got hooked.”

She said she has no art background, but that doesn’t matter when it comes to the

In December, the Grundy County Board approved an amendment to a resolution that will allow the county to pay down some of its debt from bonds issued in 2008.

The approval will allow the county to make a one-time payment of about $1.6 million and will reduce the county’s interest payments and life of the bonds.

County Board Vice Chairman David Nelson said he is pleased with the new bond rating.

He said the refinancing already was going to save the taxpayers money, and the new rating will just increase the amount of savings.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said the amendment will help reduce balloon payments. The way it previously was structured it would have larger payments at the end of the life of the bonds, which will change with the refinancing.

“Grundy County is doing much better than the counties around us. If you look at the counties around us, they are going into debt,” Welter said.

“We’re being cautious while holding a line on the taxes.”

Bonds issued in 2008 were used for various county projects, such as the construction of a facility for the Highway Department, renovations to the

Grundy County Courthouse, construction of a new facility for the Animal Control Department, the construction of a parking lot and a new 911 center.

At the time of those bonds, the county had gone from an Arating to an AA- rating, saving the county $700,000.

According to Standards & Poor, “the credit ratings are forward-looking opinions about credit risk. Standard & Poor’s credit ratings express the agency’s opinion about the ability and willingness of an issuer, such as a corporation or state or city government, to meet its financial obligations in full and on time.”

Judge to hear arguments in Gardner election appeal Electoral Board’s decision appealed

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Arguments will be heard Feb. 9 by Judge Lance Peterson on an appeal of the recent Electoral Board decision regarding who will be on the April ballot for the Gardner Fire Protection District board.

Candidate Barb Baker has appealed the Grundy County Electoral Board’s decision in favor of her opponent Todd Perkins. A preliminary hear-

ing was held Friday morning at the Grundy County Courthouse.

Baker, running for the sixyear term, filed objections to the petitions of Perkins and Michael Pasternak; both also are running for the six-year term.

The Electoral Board voted to allow Perkins on the ballot, but ruled in favor of Baker regarding Pasternak’s objection.

In Baker’s objection against Perkins, she claimed he did not securely fasten his petitions as mandated in election code.

The Electoral Board ruled Perkins’ petitions were fastened securely and his name would appear on the April 7 ballot. A judge now will hear arguments and see the same

evidence the Electoral Board saw before rendering a decision.

Baker’s attorney, Scott Pyles of Rathbun, Scervenyak & Kozol LLC in Joliet, has motioned to expedite the hearing. Baker was not present in court, but Perkins was. As of Friday, Perkins did not have an attorney.

Pyles told the judge he could file his brief by Monday, giving Perkins until the following Friday to respond.

“It’s a relatively simple issue,” Pyles said in court.

Pyles said he will be arguing whether the case law cited in the Electoral Board’s decision is binding in this case.

Perkins made few state-

ments during Friday’s hearing other than to agree on the next court date.

Peterson and Perkins agreed to Pyles’ suggested timeline and the parties are scheduled to be back in court

at 11 a.m. Feb. 9.

6 Mobile medical unit coming to Morris to help veterans MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Hines Mobile Medical Unit will be in Morris next week to help veterans.

The mobile unit will be present from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Monday at the Morris American Legion in Morris, according to a news release from the Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission.

It will be in Dwight from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at Heritage Woods, 701 E. Mazon Ave. It will then on Feb. 28 be at the Grundy County Chamber’s Family Fest, which is being held at the Minooka Community High School South Campus.

The Vet Center is available at its Orland Park location and also in the Joliet area each week. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday it is at the Joliet Armory. On Wednesday, it is at the Will County Veterans Assistance Commission office on Scott Street in downtown Joliet.

For services on any of these

days, call the Vet Center at 708444-0561 to make an appointment or to get details about their service.

Due to a federal holiday, the medical unit will not be in Grundy County on the third Monday of February.

From time to time the Hines medical unit can be in for maintenance, but the staff will still be at these locations.

The Grundy County VAC continues to support veterans by assisting with access to their VA benefits and services.

The GCVAC office is staffed by two VA accredited service officers who can educate and assist veterans with a variety of programs offered by local, state and federal agencies.

To receive services, the veteran should bring a copy of their DD214 (discharge documents) to confirm eligibility and validate active duty or their VA health ID card. If you do not have a copy, the GCVAC can assist you with obtaining it. For information, call the GCVAC at 815-941-3152.

Between Dec. 23 and Jan. 25, residential burglaries were reported in the 2400 block of Chestnut Lane, the 2300 and 2400 blocks of Parklake Drive, the 500 block of McKinley Street, and the 2600 block of Switchgrass Lane, according to a news release from Crime Stoppers.

United States currency, Mexican and Chinese currency, change and electronics were taken in the burglaries.

JOLIET – Teamwork. Problem-solving. Creativity. These are words that best describe an exciting opportunity that local eighth-grade students experienced this past fall.

Joliet Junior College hosted the inaugural National Fluid Power Association Fluid Power Challenge for six area junior high schools. The Fluid Power Challenge, held in partnership with Caterpillar Inc. and Industrial Hard Chrome, featured a skills-based competition, according to a news release. Teams consisted of four students that were challenged to solve a real life engineering problem using fluid power (hydraulics and pneumatics).

The NFPA holds these events throughout the country, but this is the first event of its kind in the Joliet area.

Phil McCluskey of Caterpillar, a member of the NFPA Board of Directors, was instrumental in bringing this event to the local community, according to the release.

“This event is about raising awareness of what we do at Caterpillar and engaging the community,” he said. “Students will have an opportunity see something new and learn about real-world experiences that will enhance their classroom education.”

The Fluid Power Challenge was held on two days: a Workshop Day and Challenge Day. On Workshop Day, teams came together to learn about fluid power, build a pneumatic lifter and receive their challenge kits.

Measuring an issue’s importance The other day in Chicago, Gov. Bruce Rauner said something simple and profound: “We can’t manage what we don’t measure.”

Rauner’s comment came as he issued an executive order in regard to what The Associated Press described as “disproportionately high unemployment rates among Illinois minorities and veterans.”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics offers measurements from 2013, the most recent year data is available for Illinois.

Average overall jobless rate: 9.1 percent.

Jobless rate for blacks: 17.1 percent.

Jobless rate for Hispanics: 11.1 percent.

Jobless rate for veterans: 9.2 percent (one of the highest rates of any state).

Rauner wants to reduce those rates by using the apparatus of government to help.

But there’s information he needs to know first: What is the extent of underrepresentation of minorities and veterans in certain areas within his control?

The governor wants to find out the number of minorities and veterans involved in training or apprenticeship programs sponsored by labor groups, contractors and subcontractors who work with the state. Such programs often lead to good jobs. Rauner’s order calls for that information to be collected and reported within 30 days.

The state’s personnel agency was ordered to review laws on preferences for hiring and contracting with veterans. That report is due by June 30.

A report also is to be prepared on the ability of businesses owned by minorities and veterans to be awarded state contracts, along with recommendations to eliminate disparities. Dec. 31 is the due date.

As the information is obtained, it should help Rauner’s administration figure out ways within its power to improve job chances for minorities and veterans.

Rauner, a Winnetka Republican and venture capitalist, is applying a traditional means of getting results: what gets measured, gets accomplished.

Find out measurable facts about employment of minorities and veterans, and then determine a course of action to improve those rates within the purview of state government.

And then, measure the outcome. Did the actions have the intended results? Does more need to be done? What additional changes are necessary?

As Rauner said, “We need to ensure jobs and business opportunities are open to everyone, but especially those who serve our country or are underrepresented in the economy.”

By ordering a measurement of this particular problem, Rauner will provide his administration with the tools to manage it.

As time goes by, the process also will provide a standard to measure Rauner’s ability to identify a problem and solve it. The public will be watching for the outcome.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Obama trolls, talks trash with a purpose Politically, President Barack Obama has never been weaker, after losing both House and Senate. At the same time, he has never talked tougher. There is a connection between the two.

Obama recently told Democratic lawmakers he’s going to “play offense” in coming months. Coming from a man with a history of occasional trash talk – “I’m LeBron, baby” – it’s tempting to dismiss this as just more chatter. What is Obama doing, going on offense after his party suffered such a resounding defeat in November?

Conservative writers John Podhoretz and Jonah Goldberg argue the president just can’t resist trolling Republicans.

Liberal Paul Waldman essentially agrees, admiring Obama’s ability to “come up with a new idea every couple of weeks to drive [the GOP] up a wall.”

It’s true the president seems to take real pleasure in annoying his adversaries. But there’s a serious strategy behind it.

With no real political clout on Capitol Hill and a job approval rating that has stayed mostly below 50 percent for a long time, Obama is trying to leverage the power he has left to force his agenda on the Republican majority. His big talk, executive actions and outlandish proposals are the best ways he has to

“The reason he is being aggressive is that he knows he can generate a response,” said a well-connected Republican strategist. “When he does an executive order, what he is trying to do is generate a response so that the entire conversation is about what he did – so that he has defined the agenda.”

Likewise, when Obama, facing a newly empowered conservative Congress, uses his State of the Union speech to propose a tax plan the liberal columnist E.J. Dionne calls “genuinely redistributive,” he is trying to dictate the terms of the debate with a powerful adversary. Of course Obama knows his plan is anathema to Republicans, but if they debate the president on his terms, he makes progress.

“It works if we let it work,” said the Republican strategist.

“When Obama says something, the question is: Is that the most important thing we should be talking about now, or should we be setting the agenda? Is it something that we have to immediately engage and begin talking about? Which means he

has set the agenda.”

Obama’s tax proposals, on the whole, have less than zero chance of success on Capitol Hill. But with the State of the Union as a launch platform, with Air Force One to fly him around the country promoting the idea, with a press to take Obama’s gambit seriously, the president can multiply his strengths, which right now are the core constitutional powers of the presidency and the bully pulpit.

If anyone doubts Obama’s intentions, just listen to senior White House adviser Dan Pfeiffer explaining the president’s economic proposals on “Meet the Press.” “Some of them are going to be legislative proposals Republicans may not love, but we’ll push them on them,” Pfeiffer said. “Some of them will be executive actions.”

In any event, Pfeiffer pledged the White House will use “every lever we can” to get what Obama wants.

The GOP should always beware of the president. Even a weak, lame duck chief executive has the power to make things happen in Washington. Obama appears ready to use his to the fullest.

COAL CITY – During the Coal City girls basketball team’s last timeout huddle Friday night, coach Brad Schmitt told his team that someone was going to have to hit a big shot.

Luckily, Coal City had Nicole Borgetti in that huddle.

Borgetti hit a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left to pull the Coalers (17-6) from a 34-32 deficit to a 35-34 lead. In the remaining 37 seconds, Borgetti hit 7 of 8 free throws to give Coal City the 42-34 win and hand the Coalers a repeat Interstate Eight Conference tournament title.

“I was a little nervous when the score got to 34-32,” Borgetti admitted. “But we ran a play, and I got open in the corner. I’ve been shooting that shot all year, and I have confidence in my 3-point shooting.

“It was nice to win the title, especially after we won it last year and lost a lot of seniors. Nobody expected us to win it again this year, but we stepped up and did it.”

“I told the girls in the huddle that someone was going to have to hit the big shot,” Schmitt said. “Especially after Mady Bunton fouled out.

The girls were very patient and found Nicole in the corner. Then we got a big stop on defense, forced a turnover, and Nicole hit 7 of 8 free throws. Those are the things that matter in a big game like this.”

At the start, it was all Coal City, as the Coalers raced out to an 11-2 lead on the strength of two 3-pointers by Mackenna Emerson and a 3-pointer and basket by Borgetti, who led all scorers with 21 points.

Borgetti hit another 3-pointer to open the Coal City scoring in the second quarter, and Bunton, who finished with 15 points, hit a pair of buckets to help the Coalers to a 21-14 halftime lead.

“I was glad we got off to a good start,” Schmitt said.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – There have been bigger dual meets between Minooka and Plainfield Central wrestling throughout the years, but Thursday’s matchup between the two rivals was probably one of the more dramatic in the longtime series.

After the Wildcats claimed six straight wins to grab a 17-point lead, the Indians responded by winning five of the last six to claim a 39-34 win on a night that it honored three seniors.

“When you looked at the lineups on paper, it may not have had the appeal as some of those in years past, but we managed to make it an exciting one,” Indians coach Jeff Charlebois said. “We had five freshmen and a sophomore competing, but that’s how it’s been this year. We have definitely improved from the night before Thanksgiving to today.

The Wildcats still led 34-24 with three matches left after Akwasi Aikins won by techni-

cal fall at 182, but Minooka won the final three matches, starting with Josh Bouie’s fall at 195.

The final two matches were up for grabs with less than a minute to go. Perez swung the momentum toward Minooka when he pinned John Harris with 21 seconds left at 220.

Then in the finale at 285, Central’s Kamil Fit took a 2-0

lead in the first period and carried it into the third, when he yielded an escape to Wentworth. It remained 2-1 until the undersized Indians freshman got a takedown with six seconds left to capture a 3-2 win.

“We knew that it was senior night, so we wanted to put on a show,” said Bouie, who is joined in the senior class by Chris Hiscock and Erik McMillin. “We’re getting healthy right now and it seems that we’re getting a little bit of momentum with these last duals and that should help us later on. We have a lot of guys in our middle- and upperweights who can make some noise in the postseason and some of our young guys can learn from that.”

Two of those young guys, the McDowell twins, got things started off well for Minooka.

Zach won by fall at 106, and Adam followed with a forfeit win to give the hosts a 12-0 lead in the Southwest Prairie Conference match.

But then it was Central’s time to shine, and that’s just what happened, beginning with Ethan Plese’s 6-0 win over Jake Bugajski at 120. Cody England

followed with a 15-3 victory and then John Nudera won by technical fall at 132 to create a 12-all tie.

The Wildcats moved in front when Jared Ellingwood recorded a fall at 138 and Clayton Ledbetter followed up with a win by technical fall. Ryan Yohe completed the run when he got a fall at 152 to give Central a 2912 advantage.

But Minooka answered with a first period pin from Kenny Kirkland at 160, and then a similar effort from Carson Oughton at 170 to close to within 29-24. After Aikins claimed the final Wildcats win, the Indians closed with three victories, including the final two in dramatic fashion.

“We’ve been working hard in the room and have really been getting at it,” Kirkland said. “We have a lot of guys who are injured, but, hopefully, we can get some of them back for the regional and then, hopefully, make a run at getting to team state. Our lower level guys have really been stepping up for us. I like how we may start off slow, but we finish strong.”

Coalers beat Wilmington for first time since 2003

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The last time that Coal City’s wrestlers beat Wilmington in a 2003 dual meet, this year’s group of seniors was just getting started in the sport.

On Friday, the Coalers finally ended their frustration against the Wildcats when they rallied to capture a 34-30 victory in a clash of two of the state’s top Class 1A teams.

The fifth-ranked Coalers (26-3) and eighth-ranked Wildcats (25-6) see each other again Feb. 7 in the Agricultural Science Regional in Chicago, with he winner advancing to the dual team tournament.

Coal City trailed 21-13 with

six matches left but won four of those to edge Wilmington, which beat the Coalers for first at last weekend’s Interstate Eight Conference meet.

“Even in our losses, I thought that we were stealing a few points here and there, and when our studs went out there, they put people on their backs and put them away,” Coalers coach Mark Masters said. “We have great senior leadership and parental support and from our kids club, middle school and offseason program, we saw a lot of those things come together tonight to get the success that we had.”

A week ago, Wilmington’s Kyal Davis edged Frost, 2-1, in double overtime, but with his team trailing 24-19 Friday, the senior got an escape at the start of the third period to claim a 2-1 win.

“Losing that match last week put a fire in my heart and that wasn’t happening again,” Frost said. “It’s been a lot of years since we beat Wilmington. And it’s really big for me, being a senior, to help us do something that we haven’t done in a long time.

close one.”

Wilmington made things interesting when Kyle Hull recorded a fall in the heavyweight match, but Jake Hiles answered with a pin in 47 seconds at 106, and then Joey Rivera received a forfeit win in the final match of the evening.

Coal City opened the meet on a good note when Cody Minnick picked up a forfeit in the opener at 120 and T.J. Jezik followed with a 7-3 win over Branden Neises. Thne Corey Jurzak claimed a 14-5 victory over Colin Weis to give the hosts a 13-0 lead.

“It feels great,” Jurzak said. “This is my senior year and I’m kind of leaving with a bang. One of my main goals was to beat Wilmington ever

since my freshman year and it’s been close with them. We should have everyone back for the regional and hopefully we’ll wrestle a little better than we did at the I-8.”

But Wilmington responded by winning the next five matches to move in front. Austin Headrick got things started with a pin at 138 before Bobby Shields recorded a takedown with one second left to claim a 3-1 win over Nate Buck.

Nick Pretto used a first-period takedown to help him post a 2-1 win over Jonah Englert at 152 before Nick Hawkins got a win by technical fall. The Wildcats took their largest lead after Joe Mann captured a 12-3 victory over Brock Crawford at 170.

PHOENIX – If NFL commissioner Roger Goodell were a cat, he still would have at least six or seven lives left.

At his annual “State of the League” news conference Friday, Goodell was humble, even close to contrite at times, occasionally apologetic and without pretense about the mistakes his office has made over the past 12 months.

But he also was fully focused on moving forward rather than looking back, and without a doubt still the most powerful single individual in all of professional sports.

To anyone who wondered whether perhaps the commissioner’s job was in jeopardy, “Fuhgeddabout it!”

Goodell usually begins these sessions with three or four minutes of prepared remarks. On Friday, his opening statement went on for 8 minutes and 47 seconds.

It featured one dramatic moment when Goodell explained, “It has been a tough year. It’s been a tough year on me personally. It’s been a year of what I would say is humility and learning.

“We, obviously, as an organization have gone through adversity, but more importantly, adversity for me. It’s an opportunity for us to get better. We’ve all done a lot of soul searching starting with yours truly.”

The questions that followed still were direct and pointed at times, and some quite critical. But Goodell’s stark admissions seemed to serve to disarm some of the tension in the room.

One of the topics du jour was the Patriots’ deflated footballs, and Goodell took offense at the suggestion that his close ally, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, was upset with him.

“This is my job. This is my responsibility to protect the integrity of the game,” he said. “I represent 32 teams.

Maintenance Mechanic Lehigh Hanson is seeking a qualified Heavy Equipment Maintenance Mechanic at our Lockport, IL location. Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for maintenance and repair of plant equipment at the Lockport, IL shop. This position will be responsible for repairs to quarry machinery including crushers and perform general heavy equipment maintenance. Will perform shop work and field repairs.

Responsible for daily inspection of facilities and will complete maintenance checklists.

This position is also responsible for repairing front line mobile equipment including Haul Trucks, Cranes, Loaders and Dozers. Must be able to troubleshoot equipment , electrical and hydraulic systems.
