Born March 17, 1952 in Downers Grove, the son of William and Violet(Thomas) Wise. He graduated from Needles High School in Needles, California. Tom met Terry Moffett on October 31, 1998, and were married on April 14, 2007 in Captiva Island, Florida. They lived all of their married life in Morris.

He is co-owner with his brother in Wise Farm Lines, Inc. in Morris.

Survivors include his loving wife, Terry of Morris; children, Matt(Cherie) Uthe of Plainfield, Nikki(Jeff) Sana of Wheaton, Danica Murphy of

Morris, Mark Wise of Willowbrook and Kaley Moffett of Bloomington; five grandchildren; four sisters; two brothers; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister; and one brother.

He is a member of First Christian Church, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and EAA Warbirds of America for 35 years. He served as the director of the Warbirds and ran the flight line for the Warbirds during AirVenture at Oshkosh and served on the board of directors of the local EAA Chapter 95 in Morris.

Memorials may be given to the Joliet Area Community Hospice.

ICS students celebrate faith through activities

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The halls of Immaculate Conception School in Morris were lined with students Thursday afternoon, but it wasn’t a drill of some sort.

Instead, the school’s older students were reading to the younger students as a part of Catholic Schools Education week.

Sixth-grader Emily Wilson read “Skippy Jon Jones” to first-grader Madeline Haner.

“I like reading to the younger students,” Wilson said. “I like to see them smile.”

She said she enjoys everything about going to the Catholic school, where she describes everyone as nice and happy. She said she enjoys going to Mass every Friday as part of her school day.

Haner said it’s fun when the older kids do things with the younger students.

“I like school because I get to see my friends every day, and I get to do all the fun things,” she said.

ICS Principal Kim DesLauriers said he likes teaching students about serving their community, not just during Catholic Schools Week, but all year.

Students brought in money to fill the soup pot that is part of We Care of Grundy County’s Souper Bowl of Caring campaign. They also brought donated items, which will go to the area homeless.

Fifth-grade student Kylie Villarreal brought in hats and gloves for the donation box.

“I brought hats and gloves

to help the homeless because it’s so cold outside,” she said.

Classmate Matthew Munsell brought a package of socks for the cause.

“I brought socks to cover the homeless’ feet when it’s winter so they don’t get frostbite,” he said. “If they need it, they should have it.”

ing service to the students is important. While all schools have started teaching it more, the Catholic school teaches students they should serve because that is what Jesus told them to do.

“Catholic schools in and of themselves are unique in that there is a spiritual portion,” DesLauriers said. “It’s not just teaching the subjects that are taught in other schools.

There is an open discussion on religious values.”

The National Catholic Educational Association provides celebration ideas to Catholic schools nationally. It says the events are designed to get schools focused on the value a Catholic education provides to not only students, but to churches, communities and the nation.

In addition to it being Catholic Schools Education Week, it’s also the 125th year ICS has served as a school to Morris families, so students and staff celebrated the school’s birthday.

DesLauriers said staff held a pep assembly and kids created a birthday cake with candles, formed based on where they sat on the bleachers, singing “Happy Birthday” to the school.

He said Friday the students would get real birthday cake, and the celebration would end with a fun night, where families could come to play bingo.

Accountant hired to review pay practices County Board looks to ensure laws being followed in sheriff’s department

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County has hired an accountant to ensure it is complying with state and federal laws when it comes to a decades-old practice at the sheriff’s department that saw deputies paid in cash for after-hours work.

The Grundy County Board hired the accountant to take remedial measures and to make sure the county complies with necessary laws, according to a news release from State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

Sheriff Kevin Callahan declined comment while the matter is investigated. When contacted Thursday morning, Helland declined further comment on the accountant’s hiring.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said the board’s Finance Committee hired the accounting firm Wermer, Rogers, Doran & Ruzon, LLC to perform accounting functions, according to Finance Committee minutes.

Thursday evening, he could not immediately confirm how

much the county was paying for the service.

In October, it was brought to the county’s attention that sheriff’s deputies were being paid in cash for after-hours work for Exelon Dresden Generating Station, a nuclear power plant on the outskirts of Morris.

Exelon pays the sheriff’s department to compensate the deputies, who provide traffic control for the plant for its annual outage, when hundreds of additional employees are brought on to repair and up-

Ex-Wilmington high school teacher, coach charged with sexual abuse

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Police announced Thursday the arrest of a former Wilmington High School social studies teacher and girls basketball coach, alleging he engaged in inappropriate activities with an underage student.

Jonathan D. Lewis Jr., 27, of Naperville was charged with four counts of criminal sexual abuse, four Jonathan D. counts of child Lewis Jr. pornography and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Bail was set at $1 million, police said. Lewis is scheduled to appear at a bond hearing Friday in Will County.

In a news release, Wilmington police said they received information from an anonymous source concerning the matter.

“The victim’s parents and the school district were notified immediately of the investigation,” the news release

said.

Wilmington School District 209-U officials said they ordered June 30 – shortly after police notified the district – that Lewis have no contact with students.

Superintendent Jay Plese said near the end of June he was approached by an officer outside school, who informed him an investigation might be starting into a teacher.

“I had no information at the time,” Plese said, adding that the next day he told a teacher to contact school attorney Scott Nemanich if police started an investigation because he was leaving for vacation.

Plese said the district’s no-contact order led to the girls basketball team canceling participation in an annual summer camp at Kankakee Community College.

On Aug. 6, as the district prepared paperwork for a possible suspension of Lewis, the district received a one-paragraph resignation letter from him.

“I am resigning from my position as a high school social science teacher and girls’

varsity basketball coach,” Lewis stated in the letter, provided by the district. “I want to thank you and all of the administration for the incredible opportunity to be a part of the Wilmington school district. It was a great experience.”

Plese said the district didn’t know the name or grade level of the student involved.

Police said investigators determined Lewis committed numerous offenses between March and October 2014. Assisting in the investigation was the Will County High Tech Crimes Unit and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday, police said.

Wilmington police processed Lewis Thursday morning and he was transported to the Will County Jail in Joliet.

“Due to information obtained during the investigation, Lewis’ passport has been revoked by the United States Department of State because it is believed that Lewis may try to flee the country to avoid prosecution,” police said in the news release.

The sheriff’s department cashes the check and the cash is divided between the deputies who provided traffic control with no input from the treasurer’s office – which means deductions such as taxes, retirement fund and insurance are not taken out.

It’s a practice in place for the last 25 years, Sheriff Kevin Callahan has said. Callahan also has said he would change the process at the County Board’s direction.

After the October meeting, Helland contacted the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor’s Office and the Illinois Attorney General’s Public Integrity Bureau.

The Illinois Attorney General’s Office agreed to investigate the cash payments after Helland determined he had a conflict of interest, according to Helland’s news release.

Morris Community High School Superintendent Pat Halloran said the program helps in more ways than one.

“I think it’s twofold. They get important education on timely, important topics,” Halloran said. “It also allows them to help with the costs of going to prom, which can be expensive.”

In addition to girls going home with prom dresses and accessories, the boys have an opportunity to get in on raffle items, including tickets to their prom, vouchers for Sklut’s Mens Wear in Morris and other donated items.

Girls will find raffle items, too, including gift certificates for hair, makeup and nails from

area businesses. A Mary Kay representative will show girls how to do their makeup, offering samples the girls can take

home. Local hair stylists have offered time to show girls updo ideas that they may want to wear to their formal event.

MORRIS – Grundy County teens have a chance to go to prom for far cheaper than the average price tag that includes formal wear, flowers, hair, nails and accessories.

They can do that by attending the inaugural Prom Expo, hosted by the Grundy County No Tolerance Task Force, Guardian Angel Community Services and Grundy County State Attorney’s Justice Assistance Board.

“This will be our first annual expo,” said Paula Goodwin with NTTF. “We’ve changed up the program to get more attendance and are offering an expo, much like a bridal expo.”

Grundy County students will be invited to the Grundy County Administration Center from 9 a.m. until noon Feb. 21 at 1320 Union St. in Morris. There will be an hour long presentation on dating safety and information from the health department on sexually transmitted diseases.

Once they attend the presentation, the girls will be invited to try on any of the donated dresses available and can take home one of the new or gently used dresses for free.

“This helps offset the cost of prom for those who may be unable to go otherwise,” Goodwin said. “The event is open to everyone regardless of income.”

In previous years, the groups hosted events throughout the county, and students had to listen to a two-hour presentation to participate.

With the initial program, more than 70 girls have received prom dresses, said Good-

Morris High recognizes recipients of Prairie State Achievement Award MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Prairie State Achievement Examination is a two-day standardized test that measures the achievement of students in 11th grade in writing, reading, mathematics and science.

A student can earn an award in each of the subjects that are tested. There is no composite score or overall award for the PSAE. Students receive a certificate in their senior year that indicates each subject in which they earned an award, according to a news release from the school.

Morris announces State Scholars MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Morris Community High School Principal Kelly Hussey recently announced that 34 students from the school have been recognized as 2015-16 Illinois State Scholars.

A release from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission said Illinois State Scholar winners rank in the top 10 percent of seniors from high schools across the state.

Students are selected based on their scores from their SAT, ACT or Prairie State Achievement Exam and/or

class rank at the end of their junior year.

High school guidance counselors work in conjunction with ISAC to determine the winners.

The recognition does not include a monetary award, the release noted, but recipients are encouraged to cite the honor on applications for college admission and scholarships.

CHURCH BULLETINS Catholic Schools Week wraps up at ICS MORRIS – Catholic Schools Week was celebrated in Catholic schools throughout the nation this week, including in Morris.

This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools – Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service,” according to a news release from Immaculate Conception School in Morris. These three points will be emphasized at ICS, which also will celebrate its 125th anniversary during Catholic Schools Week.

Events have been held all week and wrap up today with Family Night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Families are invited for an evening of Bingo, prizes and entertainment.

There is no charge for participating. The ICS Student Council is raffling a motor scooter, and the drawing will be at 8 p.m.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – On Thursday night at Morris Community High School, the final score of the wrestling match between the Redskins and Sandwich was secondary. The night was about the eight seniors that wrestled and the manager that helped out on the bench.

Before the senior night match, seniors Brook Baudino, Emmet Chouinard, Andrew Faught, T.J. Jungles, Ryan Kowalczyk, Ryan Olsen, Victor Toussaint, A.J. Vota and Emma Vota were honored for their contributions to the program. Emma Vota is the manager, and all the rest were in the lineup for the Redskins.

A.J. Vota (152) and Kowalczyk (182) ended their home careers with pins as Sandwich defeated the Redskins, 56-24.

Toussaint claimed a victory by forfeit as well.

“It was nice to see A.J. and Ryan get pins,” Morris coach Jon Lanning said. “All the seniors were in the lineup, and that was the important thing tonight. They have put in a lot of work and dedication. Wrestling is not an easy sport, and it’s tough to keep coming out for four years.”

The match started at 106, and Sandwich dominated the lighter weights. The Indians’ Nevin Thielk pinned Morris’ Michael Milton in 1:35, then Ethan Dockendorf pinned Abby Eisenbeis in 18 seconds in the 113-pound bout. At 120, Sandwich’s Jacob Newberry pinned Dillon Thompson in 34 seconds before teammate Tommy Dale pinned Baudino in 28 seconds. Dylan Boyd then pinned Morris’ Ethan Elleson in 3:35 to give Sandwich a 30-0 lead, and Zach Reyes pinned Jacob Barkley in 58 seconds in the 138-pound bout.

Shain Hennessy of Morris gave Eric Littlejohn a good match before finally losing a 10-6 decision to make the score 39-0 in favor of Sandwich.

“It was wonderful to get a pin in my last home meet,” Vota said. “We had a couple of guys out tonight, and hopefully, they can come back for the regional next week. I am excited for the postseason. I feel like I have a good chance to get

“It would be a great way to end my career to advance to state.”

“It was great to see seniors

like Andrew and Victor on the side of the mat yelling encouragement to the other guys,” Lanning said. “The seniors have really stepped up their leadership roles as the season has gone on.

“And, it was good to see Cody being aggressive. His offense is his strong suit. Now, we have a week before the regionals, so we have a little time to get healthy.”

This was a big one: A red fox sighting A week or so ago I stood in my living room gazing out at the snowy landscape. A second later, a flash caught my eye.

I turned my attention downward toward my patio. A few feet past the window, standing on the concrete, was a red fox.

He didn’t see me and held his position for quite some time. I soaked up the opportunity to observe such a magnificent animal. Even in the dead of winter, the fur coat of this canine glistened. His black boots bore no muddy stains and the regal tail muff puffed like it had just been conditioned. Amazing.

I summoned the rest of the family and they too got a quick glimpse before he skirted off.

In the past 12 months, I have seen an increasingly large number of these little predators where I live. Last summer I watched one with a friend of mine as we fished for a good 15 minutes. He watched us, we watched him.

I should be careful about using the terms “he” and “she.” Honestly, I couldn’t tell and neither animal offered themselves up for closer inspection. Either way, I have really enjoyed observing them on a more regular basis.

The one we spied while out angling had to be near a den, or burrow. The location held the perfect qualities for such a home. Nice sloping ground that drained water away.

Thick, grassy, vegetation provided excellent concealment.

The little patch of land sat unused by people between two houses that most likely warded off potential threats, such as coyotes. The thought of a den nearby also would explain the fox’s persistence of sticking around while we fished not far away.

After doing a little more research on this most recognizable predator, I found that the red fox lives worldwide. Its range covers most all of North

Raanta has taken the rookie under his wing since he was recalled Jan. 2. They drive together to the airport. They hang out together on the road. They discuss the latest news and results from the Finnish pro league, the Liiga. And when Teravainen gets a little shy around others, Raanta takes particular fun in embarrassing him by making something up and forcing Teravainen to have to use English to deny it.

And while Andrew Shaw got some sun in the Dominican Republic, Ben Smith got some time with his family back in Connecticut and five other teammates got the spotlight in Columbus, Raanta (who’s saving money for his wedding this summer) and Teravainen (who’s still living out of a hotel) spent their All-Star break in Chicago – playing video games. Mostly FIFA 15 soccer for Xbox, because Teravainen

spent most of training camp wiping the floor with Raanta in NHL 15.

“We do all stupid things,” Teravainen said with a smile.

While Raanta gets to act like a kid again, Teravainen has benefitted even more from the friendship. He credited Raanta for helping ease him into the NHL lifestyle, and into the “joking club” in the dressing room. When Teravainen first showed up in Chicago last spring for three games, he was overwhelmed and kept to himself. In training camp, he was a little more comfortable. Now, he’s just one of the guys.

On the ice, he’s shown all the qualities that made him such a touted prospect. He has

The fox’s extreme talents at adapting to a wide range of climates and habitats have helped to perpetuate the moniker of being a “cunning” animal. The little red mammals have a plethora of foods they will eat, including plant matter when necessary.

Given a choice though, they do prefer small creatures such as rodents, birds and rabbits.

Foxes typically mate during the winter with their kits being born a couple of months later. Both parents will take care of the youngsters through two goals and two assists in his past five games, and both Joel Quenneville and Stan Bowman have raved about him, and believe he could be in the NHL to stay, even when Kris Versteeg comes back from injury.

His daring charge through traffic in the neutral zone and offensive zone set up Andrew Shaw’s go-ahead goal in the third period of Wednesday night’s eventual loss to the Kings.

His boldness is coming through in other ways, too.

“He’s already chirping guys like [Shaw] does now,” Raanta said. “When you talk Finnish with him, you can see that he’s also outgoing. He’s a really funny guy. So it’s good to see him coming out of that a little bit and getting along with the guys so good, so I don’t have to be there all the time. It’s a great thing to see. He’s smiling here, and he’s enjoying it.”

Said Teravainen: “I just get to know every guy better ever day. So that’s good. I’ve just tried being myself here.”

Having Raanta as a countryman, a confidante and a big brother hasn’t hurt.

“It’s fun for me, too,” Raanta said. “It’s like going back to my teenage years, almost. He’s a good boy.”

The relationship of mankind to the fox has been one of many contested circumstances. The dazzling fur coat has made it very desirable to people throughout history. Even to this day, the worldwide fur trade still relies on fox pelts.

Probably a fair number of folks reading this column have trapped foxes in the past and sold their furs.

The fox also has caused a lot of angst to farmers trying to protect their livestock. The infamous chicken coop raid has labeled the fox as a pest.

I found that the notorious fox hunt the English are so well known for actually didn’t really become popular until the 18th century. Before then, the term of “vermin” often was used when describing the

creature. Once English nobility fancied the idea of foxhunts, they actually brought them to the colonies of Virginia and Maryland. That token effort wasn’t really needed because the fox already had existed in the new world, but plantation owners brought them over anyway.

Humans are considered the animal’s No. 1 enemy with other predators such as coyotes, large felines, and even big predatory birds taking their fair number. Even with people constantly badgering them, the fox has adapted to living around mankind and flourishes anywhere an ample food supply exists.

I look forward to more future encounters with my furry neighbors. I always enjoy observing them make their way in this world around us.

Tillman has good vibes after meeting

By ADAM L. JAHNS ajahns@suntimes.com PHOENIX – It was a brief meeting at Halas Hall, but Bears cornerback Charles Tillman walked away with a great feeling – a sense of excitement for what’s ahead for his beloved team.

“I saw some people; I saw everybody,” Tillman said Thursday of a recent visit to Halas Hall. “I just think it’s a good year to get excited about Chicago Bears football.”

Those people would include new Bears coach John Fox and general manager Ryan Pace. Tillman said it was a brief introduction, consisting of small talk and some pleasantries for about 30 to 60 seconds But “within those 30 seconds, it was all good,” said Tillman, who is in Phoenix

as part of the NFL Honors awards show as last year’s Walter Payton Man of the Year winner.

NFL circles have been abuzz over the Bears’ decision to hire Fox. There has been an overflow of compliments for the move – including some unsolicited praise – throughout Super Bowl week.

It’s a move that’s definitely won over Tillman and linebacker Lance Briggs after two tough, injury-filled seasons after the firing of Lovie Smith.

Just when it looked like other teams could offer better situations for Tillman and Briggs, the arrival of Fox, and to a lesser extent, Pace, have led to hopes for more time in Chicago.

“I echo what Lance said [Wednesday],” said Tillman, who was brought back in 2014 on a one-year deal with a $2.25 million base salary.

Improving international responses to Ebola epidemics The latest World Health Organization statistics indicate that Ebola infection rates are plummeting across West Africa. With 710 new cases confirmed in the past 21 days, this epidemic is far from over. But now that health experts are easing back from crisis mode, this is a good time for an assessment of what went wrong and how to address the problem more effectively the next time.

There will be a next time. Ebola has surfaced in different strains multiple times since its discovery in 1976, and the fact that the current epidemic got so wildly out of control, with more than 8,600 deaths, indicates ample room for improvement in how the world responds.

WHO’s executive board is meeting in Geneva this week to examine what went wrong. As Dr. Margaret Chan, director general of WHO, told the board, the epidemic “delivered some horrific shocks and surprises. The world, including WHO, was too slow to see what was unfolding before us.”

Some of the problems that exacerbated Ebola’s spread were beyond the medical community’s control.

War and political upheaval weakened local governments’ ability to identify and contain the early outbreak.

Cultural factors, such as traditions calling for corpses to be washed before burial, also proved difficult to change. Myths and rumors spread rapidly, putting medical personnel at risk when villagers became convinced the health workers were there not to save them but to infect them.

First among many top international priorities should be expanded public education. In schools, mosques and churches across Africa, the WHO and other U.N. bodies should redouble efforts to explain how to properly handle corpses and avoid contact with people showing disease symptoms. The best time to educate the public is not in the throes of crisis but rather in calmer times when people are better able to absorb the message.

West Africa’s medical community has been hit hard by the Ebola deaths of 499 health workers. Vulnerability to new epidemics increases dramatically in the absence of qualified health workers to treat the ill.

International organizations such as Doctors Without Borders and Samaritan’s Purse can lead the way to helping fill this gap as West Africa works to rebuild its medical corps.

Finally, WHO officials should consider more nimble responses. While poor African countries certainly benefit from having more hospitals and clinics, nearly a third of the 64 Ebola treatment centers planned for West Africa still remain under construction today. A better approach might be emphasis on mobile facilities that can be deployed quickly when Ebola hot spots develop.

The executive board’s lessons-learned examination is a healthy one. As Chan noted, “Never again should the world be caught by surprise, unprepared.”

Ignoring religion can be dangerous For more than a century, Western diplomats and scholars were sure of one thing: that religion’s role in world affairs would decline as humanity evolved toward a future rooted in logic and science.

Those who didn’t accept this vision were considered naive, irrational or perhaps even dangerous.

The problem? There is little evidence that this theory is true.

In fact, it has become increasingly obvious that journalists and diplomats must pay more attention to religious traditions and practices if they want to understand many of the conflicts shaping and shaking our world, argued historian John Wolffe of the Open University in England.

To be blunt, he said, confusion about the role that religion plays in the real world is dangerous. But how will religious believers and unbelievers learn to understand each other if journalists don’t learn to cover religion accurately and fairly?

The risks are real, and it’s crucial for journalists and diplomats to react when religious and secular forces cause stable,

Rapid economic changes, a political regime’s collapse, natural disasters or outside military threats can cause such explosions. So can the rise of a charismatic religious leader or an invasion – real or via media – by activists from foreign cultures.

Religion can mix with nationalism, with oppressive government policies, with ancient tribal conflicts or attempts by a majority group to crush a hated minority.

Progress is possible. Wolffe and others applied lessons learned during generations of strife in Northern Ireland to current conflicts inside the complex world of Islam. The bottom line: Even secular officials, diplomats and journalists need to recognize that mainstream religious leaders must be involved in strategies to promote peace.

“Religion can make a shatter-

ing difference in people’s lives, but indifference to religion can make a shattering difference, as well,” said Jenny Taylor of Lapido Media, when interviewed after the conference. “Far too many people simply have not done their homework. They don’t know the ground on which they are standing when they look at the world around them.”

As for journalists and government officials, she said, when facing a crisis involving religion, “they most of all fear making a mistake that can end their careers, so they are afraid to act. ... But they also have to be concerned about the mistakes they can make by not acting, by not covering important religion-news stories. You see, if you don’t understand religion, then you are going to make mistakes either way – and they are going to be profound mistakes.”

A ‘charley horse’ can occur for any number of reasons Dear Doctor K: Over the past few months, I’ve been experiencing severe “charley horses.” What causes them?

How can I prevent them?

Dear reader: Almost everyone has a “charley horse” at some point in his or her life. These are muscle spasms in which a group of muscles involuntarily contracts. This causes pain and inability to use those muscles.

Stretching typically stops the cramp. But you may continue to have soreness for several days.

Often charley horses develop for no clear reason. They can happen while sleeping, or they may develop if you stay in one position for a long period, as in writer’s cramp.

A variety of conditions are associated with such muscle

They include: • exercise, especially with dehydration • pregnancy • kidney disease (particularly patients being given dialysis) • low potassium (this can result from taking diuretics for treatment of either high blood pressure or heart failure) • low calcium • low magnesium • hyperventilation (breathing too fast) • hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) • certain medicines. These include drugs that treat con-

ditions ranging from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease to high cholesterol, osteoporosis and asthma.

• Muscle disease. If your cramps are unexplained, severe, prolonged or frequent, you should see your doctor.

Depending on the cause of your muscle cramps, you may be able to prevent them: • If you’re getting cramps during exercise, drink water before and during exercise.

This should prevent cramps due to dehydration. If drinking water alone is not enough, salt tablets or sports drinks may help replace minerals in your body.

• When you get cramps during exercise, stop your activity to stretch and massage the affected muscle at the first sign of a spasm. Use

heat to relax the muscle when the spasm begins. Ice may help after the first spasm and when the pain has improved.

If the muscle is still sore after heat and ice, try a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) to help with pain.

• If you have recently started a new medicine that could cause muscle cramps, ask your doctor about switching to a different medicine or adjusting the dose.

• If you have an underactive thyroid, you should be taking synthetic thyroid hormone. This should correct many symptoms, including the cramps.

• If your potassium, calcium or magnesium levels are low, taking supplements and

correcting the underlying reason for your deficiency may help.

In more severe cases, your doctor can prescribe medications to help prevent spasms.

In people who get repeat cramps for no clear reason, and whose kidneys are functioning normally, I often still prescribe potassium and magnesium supplements.

That’s true even if a person’s blood levels of these minerals are normal. There aren’t good medical studies of whether this practice is beneficial, but it’s been my experience that it sometimes helps.

No. 2 To the Gas Patrons of Ameren Illinois Company d/b/a Ameren Illinois: Ameren Illinois (or "Company") hereby gives notice to the public that on January 23, 2015, it has filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission (“ICC or Commission”) proposed changes in its rates and charges, terms and conditions of service for natural gas delivery services throughout its territory in the State of Illinois. The proposed changes are applicable to Rate Zones I, II and III. The changes in rate schedules are proposed to take effect on or about January 1, 2016, after hearings and after the Commission issues its final Order.

This filing is designed to increase Ameren Illinois' gas delivery service base rate revenues by 14.8 percent based upon a 2016 future test year and includes various rate design proposals, and proposals for new or modified services. The rates for delivery service constitute only a portion of the total bill of a customer taking bundled natural gas service from Ameren Illinois, or taking supply (transportation) service from a thirdparty supplier. For the GDS-1 Residential Delivery Service classification, the proposed changes result in 10.7, 25.4 and 10.7 percent increases in the gas delivery service revenue for Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively. Under the Company's proposal, for a residential customer using 530 therms annually (or approximately 44 therms monthly), the effect of the delivery service increase and other changes being proposed by Company produce 5.7, 12.5 and 5.7 percent average monthly bill increases (or $2.90, $5.96 and $2.90 monthly) for bundled service in Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively. For a residential customer using 745 therms annually (or approximately 62 therms monthly), the effect of the delivery service increase and other changes being proposed by Company produce 4.9, 10.9 and 4.9 percent average monthly bill increases (or $3.06, $6.41 and $3.06 monthly) for bundled service.

For a residential customer using 934 therms annually (or approximately 78 therms monthly), the effect of the delivery service increase and other changes being proposed by Company produce 4.4, 9.9 and 4.4 percent average monthly bill increases (or $3.20, $6.81 and $3.20) for bundled service.

For non-residential customers, the proposed changes in gas delivery service revenue for each of the three rate zones are: For GDS-2 Small General Delivery Service classification, 19.0%, 18.8% and 12.5% percent increases for Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively; For GDS-3 Intermediate General Delivery Service classification, 17.5%, 29.2%, and 11.5% percent increases for Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively; For GDS-4 Large General Delivery Service classification, 24.6%, 11.8% and 20.5% percent increases for Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively; For GDS-5 Seasonal Delivery Service classification, 20.9%, 18.3% and 18.6% percent increases for Rate Zones I, II and III, respectively; and For GDS-7 Special Contract Service classification, there are no proposed changes to delivery service rates.
