JOSEPH V. SERENA JR. Born: Dec. 3, 1946; in Joliet, IL Died: Dec. 31, 2014; in Brooklyn Center, MN Joseph “Vic” V. Serena Jr., age 68, of Joliet, IL passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at North Memorial Residential Hospice in Brooklyn Center, MN. Vic was born December 3, 1946,

in Joliet, IL to the late Joseph Victor and Mary Louise (nee Doud) Serena, Sr. He retired from TJ Lambrecht in Joliet, IL following twenty-eight years of employment.

Vic was a member of the St. Jude Catholic Church in New Lenox, IL and a Fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1574 in Braidwood, IL. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed attending his Tuesday night meetings at the Gun Club in Bourbonnais, IL. Surviving are his wife, Marlene (nee Laduron) Serena of Joliet, whom he married September 21, 2003 in Austin, TX; three daughters, Kim (Rick) Marks of Gardner, IL, Candi (Ryan) Butzow of Onarga, IL and Cassi (Nick) Dermody of Minneapolis, MN; two step-sons, Joseph (Jennifer) Schneider of Roseville, MN and Todd (Julie) Schneider of Brooklyn Center, MN; grandchildren, Benjamin, Blake and

Braden Marks, Quinn Butzow, June Dermody, Makayla and Thomas Schneider, Elizabeth and Cate Schneider; five brothers, Monty (Dorothy) Serena of South Wilmington, IL, Arthur (Jane) Serena of Bonfield, IL, Carmen (Janis) Serena of Kankakee, IL, Kenneth ?Skinner?

Area encouraged to use blue lights

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When Linda Goff got a Facebook invite from a friend to change her porch light to blue in honor of fallen police officers, she quickly joined.

“My Facebook friend from the hometown where I grew up is a dedicated police dispatcher,” Goff said. “She sent me the invite and I said I would because I think there is so much negativity put out about our police officers.

I wanted to show them support.”

The nationwide event was created by D.J. Jessup, a former police officer from Bedford County, Virginia. It now has more than 100,000 supporters who have agreed to turn their porch light blue in support of police officers everywhere.

Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said the blue light project started in Illinois after the line of duty deaths of Pontiac officer Casey Kohlmeier and his K-9 Draco. The two were hit and killed by a DUI driver while sitting at the Interstate 55 turnaround just north of Pontiac.

“The death of the Pontiac officer hit close to home. He’s the son of my cousin,” Dite said. “After his death, I had a blue light on my porch until we moved this year.”

Project Blue Light is a nationwide recognition of officers who have died in the line of duty. To honor their memory, a blue light is placed outside a home or in a window. This originally started for the holiday season, but the movement’s website said most people keep their blue lights on all year long.

It also suggests turning on a blue light for National Police Week in May.

Goff said she believes it is important to show support, especially in a small town such as Morris, where residents know their police officers as neighbors and friends.

“There has been so much controversy about police officers lately, and in a small town like Morris we need to show our officers that we have their backs just like the people in New York have their officers’ backs,” Goff said. “It’s important to show support to those who defend us and give us their time, whether they are soldiers or police officers.”

Dite said the department appreciates the resident support.

“For our officers, any kind of support from the community is important to them,” he said. “Police work is police work wherever you are, but at this time we are in a state of awareness to what is going

on around us.”

The official Facebook event is schedule to run until Jan. 7. It started Thursday.

The event page reads, “Replace your porch light with a blue light bulb for one week to honor all police officers that have fallen in the line of duty. These brave men and women have sacrificed everything for us so let’s show our support.”

Morris to have write-in candidates in primary Residents requesting

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Two candidates running for Morris offices that had their names withheld from the primary ballot by the Morris Electoral Board will officially run as write-in candidates.

Earlier this month, the Morris Municipal Officers Electoral Board ruled in favor of the objectors to the petitions of

Doug Hayse for alderman and Mary Callahan for city clerk.

With the ruling, Hayse, a Republican who sought to run for 2nd Ward alderman, and Callahan, a Republican who sought to run for city clerk, will not be on the primary ballot.

The objections to the candidates’ petitions for office were filed because their petitions were not fastened according to state statute requirements.

Both Hayse and Callahan recently filed paperwork with

the Grundy County clerk and the city clerk declaring their intentions to run as write-in candidates.

Second Ward incumbent Julian Houston and current City Clerk Carol Adair, both Republicans running to keep their seats, will have their names on the ballot.

Since they are write-in candidates, voters must write in Hayse’s or Callahan’s names on the ballot to vote for them.

The primary is Feb. 24.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Zoning Board of Appeals has approved a recommendation to the Morris City Council to allow a code variance to Eric and Lorie Shear for a freestanding garage at their Creek Drive home.

Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said the city created an ordinance prohibiting any freestanding garage from being taller than 15 feet.

“The city created the ordinance to prevent residents from building a freestanding garage with living quarters above it,” Cheshareck said.

Eric Shear requested a variance, which would allow him to build the structure

with a 16∏ foot height so the structure would match his home. The garage will not have a residence above it.

“I want to make it look like the house,” Shear said.

“Our first floor is not a standard 8-foot ceiling height, so it raises the height of the garage.”

Board member Bill Button said he didn’t think anyone would notice the 1∏ foot difference and he saw no problem with it.

No one from the public appeared before the board to speak for or against the proposal.

The board voted to recommend its approval to the City Council, which will vote on it at the next regularly scheduled meeting Monday.

MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Morris Community High School Redskin Speech Team kicked off their 2014-15 season with a team victory at the Morris Redskin Invitational.

The Redskins finished in first with 412 points. Second place was Joliet West with 344 points. Seneca High School November students of the month announced MORRIS DAILY HERALD SENECA – The following students were selected by the Seneca Township High School teachers and staff as the November 2014 Students of the Month, according to a news release from the school.

Rebecca Doloski: Doloski is the daughter of Michael and Jennifer Doloski of Seneca. She currently is in her senior year and plans to attend Franciscan University of Steubenville to major in social work and minor

in Spanish. She is a member of the Speech Team, Scholastic Bowl, NHS, WYSE, FFA, Band, Spanish Club, Student Council, T.R.U.S.T, and participates in school plays and the drama club. Outside of school, Doloski is a volunteer puppy raiser that raises and trains assistance dogs for a nonprofit organization called Canine Companions for Independence.

Morgan Armbrust: Armbrust is the daughter of Marc and Chris Armbrust of Seneca.

She currently is in her senior

year and plans to attend either Eureka College or Ashford University to major in English or history. She is a member of T.R.U.S.T and the Spanish Club. Armbrust also is an athlete who competes on the track team (pole vault), and is a member of the cross country team.

Eva Saenz: Saenz is the daughter of Kendal Lamb and Angela Saenz of Vernoa. She currently is in her junior year and plans to attend college upon graduation and would like to work with animals.

Hunter Greve: Greve is the son of Eric and Angela Greve of Morris. He currently is in his freshman year and plans to attend the University of Illinois upon graduation. He is a member of T.R.U.S.T. and FFA. Greve also is an athlete who competes on the football and basketball teams. Silly objections over filing must cease Every election cycle, the same political dance plays out. Months before voters have an opportunity to select their representatives, a single person or small group of people try to make that choice for them.

In the run-up to the election, every candidate interested in running for office files reams of paperwork with state, county and local officials to declare their candidacy.

Included in that paperwork are signatures of supportive voters, economic disclosure forms, a statement of candidacy and loyalty oath.

And once those papers are filed, people, often with political ties to one person or another, come out to view those papers, looking for any violation of filing rules they can find.

Sometimes, those violations are large, but more often than not, they are technical violations of rules. Such was the case in Morris, where two candidates were dinged for not properly fastening their paperwork.

Discussion before the local Electoral Board degenerated to a discussion of the type and color of paper clip used to keep all these papers together. Ultimately, the pair was removed from the ballot, but have declared write-in candidacies.

Both these people may have made fine public officials. But unless they run strong write-in campaigns, a difficult task, no one will have the chance to find out.

There is an argument to be made about paying attention to detail. If a candidate cannot follow the rules in the run-up to an election, what will they do if they are elected?

At the same time, when politicians have to be more concerned about fastener types or ink color than about issues faced in their municipalities and districts, there’s something terribly wrong.

This is a recent phenomenon in Morris.

Such objections are not typical there. But there are several candidate objections pending throughout Will and Grundy counties.

When people are removed for technical and inane reasons, it contributes to voter cynicism – which politicians often bemoan when it suits them.

Rather than play political games, we all would be better served if candidates were allowed to run on their ideas. That’s not a radical concept, but these days, it’s becoming increasingly rare.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Will Obama defy Congress on Gitmo prisoners?

President Barack Obama has long advocated closing the U.S. terrorist prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He likely would have done it long ago, had Congress not stopped him.

Now, however, Obama is not in the mood to abide by anything Congress says. And he is again talking about closing Guantanamo.

The result could be an ugly and protracted fight between the president and lawmakers of both parties. But it’s also possible Obama will avoid a conflict and simply use his executive authority to release a prisoner here, a prisoner there, until Guantanamo is very nearly empty – all done without any meaningful debate.

Meanwhile, as he has done with immigration, the environment and Cuba, Obama will essentially dare Congress to do anything about it. It’s all part of the new executive-action presidency.

Back in 2010, when the House and Senate were still controlled by Democrats, huge bipar-

VIEWS Byron York tisan majorities opposed Obama’s plan to close Guantanamo and transfer its inmates to the United States. A defense spending bill passed unanimously by the Senate in December 2010 barred the president from spending any funds to transfer inmates to the United States or to close the prison.

Whatever the case, Obama will soon face an essentially unsolvable problem. Of the 132 remaining inmates, there is a hard core of perhaps 40 or 50 who, because of the nature of their terrorist activity and their detentions, the United States will never charge with crimes, will never put on trial and will never release.

In a May 21, 2009, speech at the National Archives outlining detainee policy, Obama admitted that those inmates present “the toughest single issue that we will face” in trying

to close Guantanamo.

“These are people who, in effect, remain at war with the United States,” the president said.

Granted, it is not a good thing that there are prisoners whom the United States must keep behind bars for life without ever charging or trying them.

But that is just one of the baleful effects of the war on terror. The question is, where should those prisoners be held?

Obama, the constitutional law professor, appears to believe there is some magic way to bring them into the United States, put them in the civilian justice system, and never grant them the basic constitutional rights of charge and trial. Who would be comfortable with that?

It seems obvious that the best place for such prisoners is somewhere outside the United States.

If such detentions have to exist – and they do, for this small group – it just so happens there is a prison at an American facility in Cuba that is perfect for the job.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The president can wrestle all he wants, but he’s not going to find a way to imprison inmates inside the United States without charge or trial that is, in Obama’s words, “consistent with our values.” The best way to deal with those cases is to keep them in Guantanamo until they die.

The New York Times recently reported that the administration hopes that “if it can shrink the inmate population to below 100, Congress will revoke a law that bars the transfer of detainees into the country.”

That was unlikely when Democrats controlled Congress, and it is more unlikely with Republicans in charge. The only question is whether Obama will try to find a way around Congress and the law.

Whatever the president does, he can’t change the fact that Guantanamo is the best answer to a very difficult problem.

By RYAN WOODEN Shaw Media Correspondent PLANO – With four area boys basketball teams competing in the always-difficult Plano Christmas Classic during the past week, there were plenty of ways to consume high school hoops.

Whether they watched online, listened on the radio or followed along on Twitter, fans got to enjoy 24 teams of varying size and makeup in a truly unique setting.

Dixon ultimately won the 52nd edition of the Classic, and those four area teams – Morris, Newark, Seneca and Coal City – finished third, 11th, 16th and 24th, respectively. Both the Redskins and Norsemen finished their tournaments with a critical victory for momentum and they were also both rewarded with seeing one of their players voted onto the 18-person Plano Christmas Classic all-tournament team.

Voted on by participating coaches and select media members, all-tournament team voting concluded at 8:30 p.m. Monday night and was announced after the finale of Dixon and Mendota. Morris’ Austin Patterson and Newark’s Jack Clausel were among the players selected.

For Morris, Patterson’s 17.3 points and 8.0 rebounds a game were enough to lead the team in both categories.

During the course of Morris’ four games, Patterson poured in 26, 10, 14 and 19 points, respectively. He also led the tournament in made 3-pointers.

“It’s a pretty good feeling,” Patterson said of being named all-tournament. “But I could have never done it without my teammates.”

In the third-place game against Aurora Christian, Patterson scored all 19 of his points after the first quarter and he hit several critical shots down the stretch to keep the Eagles at bay as they attempted to mount a comeback. It was a nice way to rebound after a disappointing loss to Mendota in the semifinals the previous night.

“It felt pretty good to end the tournament with a win.

Yesterday’s game wasn’t a very good one, so we had to come back tonight and see what we could actually do,” Patterson said.

Meanwhile, Newark’s Jack Clausel put together his all-tournament run despite

having been under the weather. Less than a week after missing a game time because of illness, Clausel still wasn’t feeling great, but he managed to put up 16 points and 6.2 rebounds a game in Newark’s five outings.

Clausel saved his best performance for last, pouring in

three assists in Newark’s 90-84 overtime win against Genoa-Kingston in the 11thplace game. Clausel was one of four Norsemen to score at least 18 points in an incredibly entertaining ballgame.

“Coming into this, I really didn’t know what to expect.

We haven’t played much and we really hadn’t gelled as a

team yet,” Clausel said. “I actually thought we played pretty well. The Aurora Christian game was bad, but other than that we came together pretty nicely as a team.”

Clausel managed to put up double figures in each of Newark’s five games as he led the team in scoring. However, just behind him was his brother Will, a sophomore, and after being left off the team, Clausel hopes the two can both make it in 2015.

“He played a lot better than I did. He really kind of picked up the slack for us most of the time,” Clausel said. “We want to play for the championship next year. We want to play at 8 [p.m.] and then if we both make all-tournament that’d be nice, too.”

Morris’ Jake Walker and Seneca’s Ross McCormick also received consideration for their performances. However, most ballots had been cast by the time Walker poured in 16 first-half points on his way to a team-high 23 in the win over Aurora Christian.

Mankind must work with nature, not against it Many years ago when my sons were just small boys, we visited relatives on a vacation. On that trip, we went to a local park that has a beautiful small river running through it.

Many other families waded in the river, so we decided to join them. The cool stream was a welcome relief from the sweltering July sun. Before long, my boys noticed all the smooth river rocks under the crystal clear water. Like kids will do, they reached into the velvety stream and plucked some stones from the bottom.

Soon they had a nice pile of rocks. The river diverted around their creation and continued on its way. We had a blast. Then something unbelievable happened. A woman approached my family from upstream.

“You shouldn’t be doing that,” she said.

“Doing what?” I asked.

“Piling rocks. You’re disrupting nature’s natural flow,” she scolded.

I furled my eyebrows and

responded to her, “You’re standing in front of a dam.

How is that not disrupting nature’s natural flow?” The woman snorted and left.

I couldn’t wrap my head around what just took place.

On my most recent trip I had plenty of time to look out the window as we drove.

Fourteen hours in the car gives a person some opportunity to notice things. We passed many dammed up waterways, we drove through Appalachian Mountains that had been logged, mined, and carved apart with interstates and tunnels. We even traversed through thousands of acres that grew with second-, third-, fourth-, or maybe even fifth-generation conifers.

My sons asked how you could tell, and then they too noticed and figured out that natural forests do not grow in perfectly symmetrical rows.

No matter where I looked it was virtually impossible to find land that was not touched by mankind in some way.

I’m glad that there are many places in our nation now where the goal is to keep the land in its purest form possible. It is a good thing to keep open spaces wild and free wherever we can, but to think that this land that lay before us is the same as it was in the past is unreasonable.

I was reading another recent article about the introduction of 20 bison back to a park near Dixon. It is the first time in nearly 200 years these animals have roamed wild in the Prairie State. The

If West (Majka Bilde, Dennis’ sister) had led the diamond ace against six spades, it would have defeated the slam and ruined the story.

When, though, she led the heart nine, South won with his ace, drew trumps, cashed his other two heart tricks, discarding the diamond king from his hand, ruffed a diamond in his hand, crossed to dummy with a trump and ruffed the last diamond. Now declarer had to play the club suit for only one loser.

How did he read the deal?

South felt sure that if East or West had six or seven diamonds, he or she would have entered the auction. So declarer decided that the diamonds were 5-5.

Furthermore, the carding in hearts suggested that West had begun with five. If so, West had started with 2-5-51 distribution.

Divorcée’s dating plan hits snag right out of the gate Dear Abby: After a year of separation and divorce, I have decided to dip into the online dating world at 45. My plan was to carefully select three to five men over the next few months and just date, without diving into a relationship or into bed.

To my surprise, the first man I met, “Darren,” is a great guy. He treats me wonderfully, is respectful, makes me laugh, and I love spending time with him. Now I’m no longer interested in meeting anyone else.

But I am forcing myself to stick to “the plan.”

Darren is aware of this. He respects my decision, but says he’ll convince me to choose him. Am I making a mistake by continuing to date others? I have real feelings for Dar-

Optimistic Dear Optimistic: If you hadn’t met someone as compatible as Darren, I would say full speed ahead with your plan. But if you feel awkward going out with others, then you shouldn’t be doing it.

This is not to say you should rush into anything with Darren. It takes time to really get to know someone. Take

the time because in the early months of a relationship, both parties are in the “selling” phase. You can always decide to go back to Plan A. Dear Abby: My sister “Diane” lives across the country and is an active alcoholic. I have been sober for 13 years, with the exception of a relapse in 2012. I have an 11-year-old daughter.

In addition to the alcoholism, Diane is in an abusive marriage. I have seen it firsthand when I visited her.

During each of these visits we have argued, she and her husband have fought, and Diana has drunk heavily.

I have decided to not expose my daughter to my sister’s drama. It was sad and stressful for me when I witnessed it.

MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN – Entry Level needed for busy student housing community. This position will report to the General Manager on a daily basis.
