OBITUARIES ERLENE L. CLEEK Born: April 22, 1926; in Mahomet, IL, Died: Jan. 25, 2015; in Morris, IL Erlene “Bonnie” L. Cleek, 88, of Morris, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Regency Care in Morris. Born April 22, 1926, in Mahomet, IL, she was the daughter of the late Clayton and Leoda (Daniels) Rayburn. Bonnie was raised and educated in Mahomet, graduating from Mahomet High School. She married her husband, Robert on May 27, 1944. They farmed all their lives in Kankakee, Will and Grundy Counties, spending most of their married life on their farm in the Mazon/Verona area. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and sewing, and was a gifted pianist who learned by ear. She also loved to cook and bake and enjoyed listening to Bluegrass music. Her greatest joy, however, was her family. Bonnie is survived by her husband, Robert, of 71 years; her son, Ronald E. (Sherry) Cleek, and daughter, Sherril (Craig) Herrick, all of Morris; seven grandchildren: Adeanna McCormick of Chariton, IA, Denette (Cleek) Barrington of Phoenix, AZ, Duane Cleek of Chariton, IA; Brian (Priscilla) Cleek

ROBERT KJELLESVIK Born: Oct. 13, 1935; in Morris, IL Died: Jan. 27, 2015; in Morris, IL Robert “Swede” Kjellesvik, 79, of Morris, passed away early Tuesday Morning, January 27, 2015, at Morris Hospital with his loving family by his side. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Morris with Pastor Patrick Lohse officiating. Born October 13, 1935, in Morris, the son of Roy and Ernestine (Gretencord) Kjellesvik. He graduated from Morris Community High School with the class of 1953. Bob married Lynn Barickman on November 22, 1975, in Streator. They lived all of their married life in Morris. He worked for his father as a carpenter for 18 years and later he started, owned and operated Mansard Flooring for over 30 years. He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn; children, Sherri (Paul) Kuehn of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Scott (Traci) Kjellesvik of Morris, Josh (Tricia) Kjellesvik of Morris and Katie Sanders of Morris; thirteen grand-

children; four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Steven Kjellesvik in 2009; one daughter, Stacey Bowlin in 2012; son-in-law, Jerry Bowlin in 2012; one brother, Richard Kjellesvik. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Morris Lions Club and Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 1024. He was an avid Morris Redskins fan and loved watching the Chicago sports teams. By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Students in the Grundy Area Vocational Center’s automotive technology program learned firsthand Tuesday from Joe Zolper what it takes to become a top mechanic and to start a business. Zolper owns Prison City Choppers and is lead mechanic on the TV show “Garage Squad” on the Velocity Network “It was very interesting to me and the other students who want to go into automotive careers,” said Ethan Meier, a Morris Community High School senior. “He told us that if we have a chance to go to college to take it, and work hard.” Zolper knows what it is like to be a student sitting in the seats of the automotive technology classroom at GAVC: He sat in one of those seats 20 years ago. Zolper, who went to GAVC as a junior from Gardner-South Wilmington High School, said he wanted to share the brutal truth about what it’s like on the job, and to learn through the school of hard knocks. “I tell kids to keep working, it doesn’t stop,” he said. “Experience is just as important as schooling in this field.” Zolper didn’t go to college to earn a degree. Instead, he spent all his hours away from school or work, taking apart engines and learning the mechanics of how they work, teaching himself how to fix them. At 17, he was working as a garbage man to pay rent and asking junkyards to let him have broken transmissions so he could take them apart and see if he could rebuild them. “It’s taken me 20 years to get where I am,” he said in response to a student who asked him how long it took to get where he is today, both in business and on his TV show. “My senior year, I was riding on garbage trucks and working on head gaskets to pay the rent. It’s brutal when you don’t finish high school.” Teacher Andy Kacena said

Kacena showed the students one of Zolper’s “Garage Squad” episodes Monday, so they could prepare for his visit Tuesday. “Some of them went home and watched other episodes on their own. They’re interested in what he has to share,” Kacena said. “It’s important to have presenters who work in the field come in and talk to them about the options out there.” Meier said he learned from Tuesday’s presentation that it’s hard work to get to where you want in the field, but it pays off when you are willing to do the work. Zolper said students benefit from hearing the reality of the field. “They have to work hard whether they go to school or go straight into the work force,” he said. “They also need to know that just because they don’t have the opportunities other kids have to go to a university, doesn’t mean they can’t succeed. I did.” Zolper opened Prison City Choppers in 2001 in Joliet. Today, the business is in Minooka. His show “Garage Squad” started a year ago.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Mental Health Court program has been put on hold due to the governor’s executive order freezing all state discretionary spending – including halting the awarding of contracts and grants. “Years of bad decisions have put Illinois in a financial crisis,” Gov. Bruce Rauner said in a Jan. 12 news release, when the order was signed. “Today, we start the process of putting our state back on the road to fiscal stability by reviewing agency spending, stopping contracts and grants, and selling excess state property.” In January local officials and professionals – who have worked for five years to obtain approval for the Mental Health Court – announced they were moving forward after receiving a $51,380 grant from Adult Redeploy Illinois. That grant was stopped with the executive order. “We’re approved by the Illinois Criminal Justice Authority and have all of our documents in place,” Judge Lance Peterson said Tuesday. “We were informed that the governor’s executive order froze all contracts while the governor’s office decides what will be funded.” Mental Health Court, designed to divert nonviolent, mentally ill offenders away from prisons and into a rehabilitation program, was scheduled to start Feb. 1 in Grundy

Grundy Mental Health Court funding put on hold “Years of bad decisions have put Illinois in a financial crisis.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner Illinois governor Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said members of the mental health team are looking at other options to continue to move ahead with the court. “We figured as a team to continue to have meetings and see if we can move forward,” Helland said. “We can’t just fold up and go home.” Organizers originally submitted an application for $100,000 for a full year and hoped to begin the program last fall. But they were told the money was not available and to resubmit a grant application for six months. The group received word Jan. 8 that the resubmitted application was approved. The funding comes from the state and is administered through Illinois Adult Redeploy, an organization sponsoring state programs aimed at reducing prison overcrowding, disrupting the incarceration cycle and saving taxpayer money. Helland said the goal is to keep mentally ill offenders from recommitting crimes and returning to prison by providing proper medication and treatments. Grundy County Mental Health Court organizers and advocates include Peterson, Helland, the public defender’s office, the probation department, Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan’s office, the Grundy County Health Department and Susie Galloway with Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.

County. Peterson said four defendants were identified to appear in court next week. Instead, the defendants will have to go through traditional court and will have to discuss with their lawyers what they will do. He said the Grundy County justice system has always been sensitive to defendants who would benefit from mental health services.

6 Monday’s weather causes minor accidents in Grundy County | LOCAL NEWS

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Icy road conditions Monday night caused a handful of accidents in the Grundy County area. Just after 5 p.m. a single-car accident occurred on Carbon Hill Road near Grinter Road in Gardner, Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Tuesday. A 20-year-old female of Diamond was driving north on Carbon Hill Road when she hit a patch of ice causing her vehicle to roll into the field. The vehicle rolled three times, said Terry Jensen, Gardner Fire Protection District Chief. The girl was able to get herself out of the vehicle. A snowplow driver from Krugs Lawn Care and Snow Removal in Dwight stopped and assisted her, Jensen said. “Carbon Hill Road was a sheet of ice,” the fire chief said. Gardner fire department transported the girl to Morris Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. No citations were issued. Just before 6 p.m. Monday deputies were called to Shady Oaks Road in Morris when a woman driving her vehicle hit some ice and ended up in the ditch and running into a fence, Callahan said. Minor damage occurred to the vehicle and fence. The driver was not injured, and no citations were issued, he said. In another accident in Morris, unrelated to the weather, traffic was slowed at Route 47 and Southmor Road just before 5 p.m. An 87-year-old woman of Morris was driving south on Route 47 and in the turn lane to go east onto Southmor when she pulled in front of another vehicle going north, Callahan said. The second vehicle was driven by a Braidwood woman with two children as passengers. No one was seriously injured, he said. Rose Thorson was issued a failure-to-yield ticket and was transported to Morris Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Traffic on Route 47 remained open during the accident.

Channahon D-17 hires new superintendent District also eliminates most student registration fees for next year

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The Channahon School District 17 School Board on Monday unanimously approved hiring Nick Henkle as Channahon’s next superintendent, effective at the end of the school year. Henkle, who is superintendent at Rockdale School District 84, will replace the retiring Karin Evans. Henkle’s salary will be $132,500 the first year, with 5 percent increases the second and third years of his three-year contract. “I’ve heard so many good things about this district over the years,” Henkle said before the meeting, “and I’m thrilled to be joining the district and the community.” Before becoming Rockdale’s superintendent, Henkle was a principal in Atwood Heights School District 125. Before that, he was a science and language arts teacher at Rockdale Elementary School. He grew up in Brookfield, and lives in Tinley Park with his wife, Annie, and their children Daisy, 8, and Ivy, 6. Rockdale, a pre-kindergarten through eighth grade school, has a student enrollment of 292, an average class size of 17 students and 21 teachers, according to its Illinois School Report Card. Channahon District 17 has four schools, a student enrollment of 1,283, an average class size of 24 students and 70 teachers. Henkle said he appreciates the student-centered and collaborative approach of the Channahon schools. “He had a lot of positive attributes, and we loved his positive attitude,” board president George McCoy said. “I think he will spend his first year becoming acclimated to the district and will carry on what Dr. Evans has done so far.” “I think he will really fit in well with the culture of Channahon,” board vice president Pat Clower said. “We’re really excited. I’m confident that he’s going to be able to lead our district well.” P.E. teacher and union leader Bill Stonich said teachers were part of the selection committees and were able to meet and talk to the final three superintendent candidates. “He seems like a person who is going to be very collaborative,” Stonich said. “His presentation was more of a ‘we’ conversation than an ‘I’ conversation, and I think that he will make a team effort with the teachers. ... Interchange agreement The school board also unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement with the village of Channahon that will use portions of the district’s property taxes for the next 15 years to cover expenses for improvements to the Interstate 55-Bluff Road interchange area. The village will issue general obligation bonds to fund the improvements. Village Administrator Tom Durkin and Director of Community Development Mike Petrick presented a summary of the proposal and said the school district brings in $809 of property taxes on the land. If developer Industrial Developments International builds as planned on the property, that amount could increase to $84,007 once one building is fully assessed. According to Durkin, the developer plans on building four industrial park buildings at the site. Super Bowl snacks have Arizona theme

By BILL DALEY Chicago Tribune Whether you’re down with the New England Patriots or upholding the Seattle Seahawks, you and your friends and family can chow down on Super Bowl Sunday with harmonious gusto. Because no matter which team you root for, everyone will get behind a spread of Southwestern noshes. Fun, casual food always is a given for Super Bowl parties. This year, though, set your theme in Arizona, site of Super Bowl XLIX at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. Two snacks that speak of Arizona: A lively dip made with native white tepary beans, and Sonoran hot dogs, the near-iconic frank of the Grand Canyon State. What, you might ask, is a Sonoran hot dog, aka hot dog estilo Sonora? Bruce Kraig describes it in his book, “Hot Dog: A Global History,” as “one of the more interesting cross-cultural hot dog creations ... found in the Mexican state of Sonora and in neighboring Arizona.” This bacon-wrapped hot dog is grilled and, according to Kraig, dressed with “pinto beans, grilled onions, hot red or yellow pepper, grated cheese, chopped onions, chopped coriander, chopped tomato, hot chili sauce, mayonnaise and mustard.” Mayonnaise? Yes, and it’s as much a must-have ingredient as the bacon, beans and hot sauce, according to Michael Stern, the Bethel, Conn.based co-author of “Roadfood” and other books chronicling America’s dining traditions. “In terms of flavor, there’s a wonderful surprising balance to the spiciness,” he said in a telephone interview. “It’s a sweet, rich, dairy, eggy thing ... a seemingly minor character but without it the Sonoran hot dog is different.” The rest of the condiments can vary from recipe to recipe. The bun can also differ. A Mexican bolillo roll is the standard, but Stern says any “nice, big soft roll” will work. No matter the bun or the topping, the result should be “the proverbial ‘gut buster,’ ” declares “Man

Serve with sliced vegetables, crackers or tortilla chips.

OPINION Greater transparency needed on personnel SPRINGFIELD – REEDER REPORT Sometimes elected officials forget who’s the Scott boss. Reeder They think they are accountable only to themselves. The reality is it’s the voters who put them in office and the taxpayers who pay the bills who are in charge. At least that is how things are supposed to work. At the very least, we deserve to know how elected officials are spending our money. All too often elected officials are as transparent as a slab of concrete. A good case in point is the College of DuPage. Last week, that suburban community college board voted to give $762,000 to the college’s president, Robert Breuder, so he would resign. That’s an awful lot of money to pay someone to do nothing. More importantly, it’s our money. And the board of that public institution is mum about why they want him to quit or, more importantly, why they think he deserves almost double theannual salary of the president of the United States to do nothing. That’s the height of arrogance. But it’s not a particularly uncommon situation for elected officials to be so secretive. The biggest items in just about any governmental entity’s budget is salaries. And yet, when school boards, city councils and other local governments vote on contracts for their unionized employees, they often don’t let the public know the details until after the measure has been approved. Apparently, they don’t want to hear the opinions of voters before they consider a measure. How pathetic. Shouldn’t the public know the particulars of the contract before the vote? State Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, thinks so. During the last legislative session, she pushed hard for a measure to require local governments to publicly post the details of labor contacts well before a vote. The measure died. There is no telling what government transparency bills will be introduced this year. Some of the bills may be good, others not so much. But one thing is certain: More transparency is needed. As former Gov. Jim Edgar used to say of government, “Sunshine is the best disinfectant.” And elected officials should remember: The public needs to know.

Redskins take slow ride to victory over Crusaders

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Heading into Monday night’s game against Ottawa Marquette, the Morris girls basketball team knew the Crusaders wanted to slow down the pace. The Redskins, on the other hand, wanted to push the ball up the court. Ottawa Marquette ended up winning the tempo battle, as the game did not feature much in the way of transition offense, but Morris won the war by claiming a 42-32 nonconference victory. “We didn’t want to play their game,” Morris assistant coach Rochelle Claire said. “But we ended up doing that. They sat back in their 2-3 zone, and fortunately, we hit enough outside shots. “We were able to hold them under 40 points, which is a goal every game, so that’s a positive.” Neither team got on the board until more than two minutes of game time had passed. Morris’ Julie Jurasits was able to convert a steal into a layup for the first basket, then took a pass underneath from Mya Shannon and scored for a 4-0 Morris lead. Ottawa Marquette got on the board when Kendall Kaufmann scored on a jumper from just inside the free-throw line. Shannon then got a steal and a layup for the Redskins and scored again on a drive down the lane to put Morris ahead 8-2. Kaufmann ended the scoring for the quarter with a 3-pointer and the Redskins owned an 8-5 lead. The offenses picked things up a bit in the second quarter, and Marquette opened on a 6-2 spurt that gave them their only lead. After Sydnee Stalker and Cassidy Murphy each scored for the Crusaders, Kaufmann delivered a short jumper to put Marquette ahead, 11-10. Morris then went on a 9-3 run to end the first half with a 19-14 lead. Leona Burton scored to give Morris the lead for good at 12-11. A free throw by Stalker tied the score at 12, before Jurasits had two straight baskets, and Jessica Ponce hit a 3-pointer to put the Redskins up, 19-12. Stalker

Morris (15-6) was led by Missouri-St. Louis-bound Jurasits, who had 21 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Mya Shannon had 10 points and five rebounds for the Redskins, while junior Leona Burton had six points and five boards. “We hit the boards well,” Claire said. “In the first half, our shots weren’t falling that much, but we knew if we played good defense and rebounded well that we would have a good chance. Once we started rebounding, we were able to get some putbacks and draw some fouls.”

Rudy’s has been owned and run by Francis “Rudy” Ruettiger for more than 35 years, and if you haven’t put two and two together yet, his brother Daniel is the “Rudy” of Notre Dame and Hollywood fame. And this “Rudy” claims Ninkovich as one of his star pupils. Francis has a “Rudy” story of his own. The one-time detective with the Joliet police force is a former world-record-setting power lifter who is the strength coach at Joliet Catholic Academy in addition to continuing his passion in life as the proprietor of Rudy’s gym. If you are anybody in Chicago-area high school sports, or hope to be, you come from all over the city to train with “Rudy” at Rudy’s. Patriots’ Ninkovich proud of Chicago-area roots PHOENIX – Rob Ninkovich has made the journey from high school football star to NFL journeyman, and after being cut three times and suffering a serious knee injury, he has become one of the MVPs of the New England Patriots defense. At heart, however, he is still just a South Side Chicago guy. Ninkovich was born in Blue Island, and his family moved to New Lenox when he was in seventh grade. He went to high school first at Lincoln-Way East and then Lincoln-Way Central his junior and senior years. “When I first moved there, five minutes one way was lot of cornfield, and then the other way it’s pretty populated,” he said during Super Bowl media day. “It’s kind of right on the edge of being in the middle of nowhere and being in the suburbs. It’s grown a lot since I’ve been there.” Ninkovich wants none of the star routine when he comes home to visit. “I like to just be a normal guy. They don’t treat me any different than they did when I was roaming around the neighborhood and playing basketball in my front yard.” But when it comes to Rudy’s Gym in Shorewood,

I’ve had him out to a few games along the way, and he’s definitely played a huge part in my career.” I asked Ninkovich if he ever sees any of Rudy’s stories in his own struggles to get where he is today. “Yeah there’s no question I see a little bit of those guys (Francis and Daniel) in my story. “I still love the movie. I’m not going to lie. I watched it last week before the game just to get me going. I’ve been watching that movie since I was a kid.” To hear the self-effacing star tell his own story isn’t as dramatic as the movie, but ... “I didn’t have too many offers when I came out of high school, so I had to go to the junior college route,” he said. “That was a challenge. Going to Purdue, Anthony Spencer and Ray Edwards were already starting there, so I had to kind of jump in that group of talented football players. Then getting into the league, I had to overcome being cut, a couple of injuries and just keep fighting.” There is no question anymore that Ninkovich has arrived. On Sunday, he’ll celebrate his 31st birthday by playing in Super Bowl XLIX, and every “Rudy” in Chicago will be pulling for him.

Hawks to face dejected Kings

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – The Los Angeles Kings are in disarray. They’ve lost four straight and seven of eight. They’ve waived and demoted their $5.75-million-a-season center, Mike Richards. And they’ve fallen out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Yet nobody would be the least bit surprised to see them in the Western Conference final again. Probably against the Blackhawks, too. “They’re a great team, and they know what it takes to win,” Hawks center Andrew Shaw said. “We’ve seen this before, where they just get into the playoffs, and then they win a Stanley Cup. Nobody’s going to ever take them lightly.” The Kings and Hawks share more than a stirring recent history together, having met in the past two conference finals and having won the past two Stanley Cups. They also share that rare ability to flip the switch when necessary. Last year, the Hawks and Kings both were third-place teams, fifth and sixth in the Western Conference, respectively. The Kings also won the Cup in 2012 as an eighth seed. That doesn’t mean either team can afford to coast through the regular season. But it does mean they have a broader perspective than most. So the Kings (who remain the league’s top possession team, according to advanced metrics) are frustrated but not freaking out – just like the Hawks took their early January funk in stride, even when they fell into a tie with the Winnipeg Jets for the last playoff spot in the Central Division.

Heart attack recovery time keeps getting shorter Dear Doctor K: I am 59 years old. I recently came home after being hospitalized for five days for a mild heart attack. I feel great -- but my doctor says he doesn’t want me to go back to work for another six weeks, even though my job mostly involves sitting at my desk. I like to stay busy and feel ready to return to the office. Please advise. Dear Reader: The treatment of heart attacks has come a long way in the past 30 years. Doctors can now open blocked coronary arteries with angioplasty balloons and stents or “clot-busting” drugs. We can use stress tests and echocardiograms to classify patients as low-, intermediate- or high-risk when they are discharged from

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the hospital. And patients go home with medications that reduce the likelihood of another heart attack. With today’s treatments, people leave the hospital much sooner. Only a couple of decades ago, the typical heart attack patient spent weeks in the hospital, much of it on strict bed rest. In most hospitals today, patients who have a heart attack without additional complications are out of bed in a day. They’re walking in a day or two, on a treadmill for a low-level stress test in four

or five days -- and then home. But, as in your case, many patients are advised to stay away from work for four to six weeks. That’s a big improvement from the eight- to 12-week prohibitions of the past. But is it really necessary? To find out, doctors in Australia randomly assigned 142 patients to return to normal activities, including work, either two or six weeks after their heart attacks. All the patients had been classified as low risk before leaving the hospital, and all received standard medical care, as you did. Over the next six months, the patients did well. The patients who returned to work earlier did not have a greater

number of heart problems -- repeat heart attacks, heart failure or deaths. So this one study suggests that people at low risk after a heart attack may be able to return to work sooner than six weeks. While training in internal medicine, I cared for a patient with a heart attack. His cardiologist had ordered that he lie flat all the time, even to pass his urine or have a bowel movement. After five days, he told me this was driving him crazy. He asked if he could just sit up and dangle his legs off the side of the bed, and I agreed. Nothing bad happened -- to him. However, when the cardiologist found out, he hit the ceiling. To make matters worse, he was one of the most

famous and accomplished cardiologists of the 20th century – and I was not. But on this matter, many studies since then have shown that he was wrong. My take-home lessons from this experience: In the absence of evidence, the judgment of even the finest doctors can be wrong. There is no substitute for actually studying what is the best way to treat a medical problem. So ask your doctor if he would reconsider his advice about when to return to work.
