MORRIS – In any academic year, about 10 percent of all Illinois high school graduates are named State Scholars, according to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission website.

Morris Community High School on Tuesday morning awarded its 26 students from this year’s Illinois State Scholar class with certificates of achievement.

Students are selected based on scores from their SAT, ACT or Prairie State Achievement Exam, along with class rank as of the end of their junior year.

The seniors gathered in the school gymnasium to take a picture with and be congratulated by state Rep. John Anthony, R-Joliet.

Anthony told the students that it’s important the people of Morris and the state know how great of an achievement they’ve all made.

Anthony said he makes it a point to meet the students because he wants to stress the importance of the award and let the students know the state is highlighting their achievements.

“It’s a nice honor for the students and the school itself,” Hussey said.

Morris Library crafters repurpose Altoids tins as part of more variety in programs

mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – There are about 90 mints in a 1.76-ounce Altoids tin, according to its product labeling.

But when repurposed as a craft item, the tin can elude its demise in recycling bins to take on a new life – on display in one’s home as a work of art.

Seven women gathered Tuesday evening at the Morris Area Public Library for a “make it, take it, altered-tin shadow box” craft project, as organizers called it.

Each participant was supplied a craft kit with an Altoids tin, decorative paper, magenta-colored wired tinsel and images of hearts and angels to remodel the tins how they saw fit. While all tins featured the same materials, they all looked different once everyone incorporated their own creative touches.

But Marilyn Johnson was thinking ahead. She brought in pictures of her grandson and granddaughter to cut out and place in the small tin. She finished the altered tin with a picture of her grandson in the center and will finish her granddaughter tin at home.

“My grandson is in Denver and my granddaughter is in Montana, so I don’t get to see them often,” Johnson said. “I’ll be sending these their way for Valentine’s Day.” Johnson was the only crafter to bring her own pictures, which proved difficult to fit in the tin, but the effort proved rewarding in the end. Weather spotter class to be held in Coal City

The National Weather Service will be presenting a basic severe weather spotter class for the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency that aims to teach residents what to look for when severe weather approaches.

“First of all, we focus on weather safety,” said Mike Bardou, warning coordination meteorologist at NWS of Romeoville. “Spotters tend to be out and about when a storm hits so we teach them how to be safe, and how to plan for the event.”

He said it’s important to have spotters on the ground to report “ground truth” during a severe weather event that can be correlated

Congressman Adam Kinzinger’s challenger kicked off March ballot

SPRINGFIELD – U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, will run unopposed in the March 15 primary after his challenger, Colin McGroarty, a Rockford businessman, was kicked off the ballot, the Illinois State Board of Elections con- Adam firmed.

Kinzinger David Welter, chairman for the Grundy County Board, is listed as one of two people who filed objections against McGroarty. Welter did not respond Tuesday to a call seeking comment.

McGroarty – who was vying for representation of the 16th Congressional District – needed 804 valid signatures to remain on the ballot, but nearly 300 of his 893 signatures were stricken during an examination of records Dec. 21, according to documents from the state Election Board.

Many were stricken because signatures were duplicated or not genuine, or because the signer resided outside the district, previously signed a petition of another established party or was not registered at the address shown.

The state board issued a formal ruling Jan. 20.

Kinzinger’s D.C. office declined to comColin ment Tuesday.

McGroarty McGroarty said any duplicates found on his petition documents were likely the result of him attending multiple political events attended by the same people.

In cases where the person wasn’t registered at the right address, McGroarty said he believes the people had moved since they last registered to vote.

McGroarty said there have been “zero accusations” of impropriety on his part. He believes he should have obtained more signatures to ensure he

had enough valid ones.

McGroarty accused the state Republican Party’s general counsel of targeting challengers like himself.

Online records show that John Fogarty, attorney for the Illinois GOP, pulled McGroarty’s petition for review Nov. 30. McGroarty said he believes this shows the Republican “political machine” had something to do with him being kicked off the ballot.

“I can’t prove that was the case, but it’s deductive logic,” McGroarty said.

Fogarty did not respond Tuesday to a call seeking comment.

The five-day deadline has passed for McGroarty to file an appeal for judicial review, but Jim Tenuto, assistant executive director with the State Board of Elections, said McGroarty has the option of running as a write-in candidate or filing as a candidate of another party.

McGroarty said he’ll consider his removal from the ballot “a learning experience.”

Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – For the second year, students at Channahon School District 17’s four schools will receive their education fee-free, as the school board this week approved continuing the district’s policy of not charging registration fees.

Some parents still will have to pay a few dollars at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year.

Eighth-graders will continue to pay $35 for graduation fees, and band members will owe $15, as will students in interscholastic sports. Those fees will remain unchanged next year.

The board voted a year ago to eliminate the fees for in-district students, drastically reducing what parents pay during enrollment.

Previously, they paid $70 for early childhood, $135 for kindergarten through seventh-grade and $170 for eighthgrade fees. Band fees were previously $50.

The idea was broached last year by board member Derek Breen.

The finances of the district were stable, he said, and could accommodate such a change.

The board agreed, and members approved nixing the fees.

Board member Dee Foreman – who cast the sole vote against the measure Monday – said she thought it was time to raise the fees.

“It feels very penny wise and dollar foolish,” Foreman said, “to let that amount of money go out the door again.”

Breen said the finances of the district are healthy and stable, and will not suffer by keeping fees at zero dollars.

“Financially, we’re really at a place where we’re comfortable,” Superintendent Nick Henkle said.

Born: July 6, 1928; in Isabelle, SD Died: Jan. 25, 2016; in Morris, IL Ruth J. Egeland, 87, of Morris, passed away Monday afternoon, January 25, 2016, at her home.

A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, from 10 a.m. to noon at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St. in Morris. There will be no funeral service. Inurnment will follow in Saratoga Cemetery.

Survivors include her children, Larry (Rhonda) Egeland of Homer Glen, Donna (Robert) Finch of Morris and Allan (Julie) Egeland of Coal City; five grandchildren, Bobbette (Marten) McKinney, Benjamin (Elisa) Finch, Tammi (Jason) Smith, Sean (Heather) Egeland and Tara (Kirk) Ritchie; seven great-grandchildren; three great-, great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bud Pfaff of Morris and Bill “Moose” (Marge) Pfaff of Morris; two sisters, Cheryl and Janet; several nieces and nephews. With profits from the library’s Used Books and Holiday Decorations sale, Fisher said she is aiming to not only a boost

Easels, brushes and glue guns were a few of the purchased items. The supplies will help the library continue to offer a variety of crafting workshops.

It was the latest adult programming event at the library,

which is expanding its offerings in all age areas, Fisher said.

“It seems like there’s so many more creative offerings for all age groups,” Schmidt said. “There are creative types of people putting an emphasis on these programs.”

Fisher said she plans at least three adult events a month, and programs of all varieties and for all ages are taking off.

Dennis Watson, Sr., age 75, of Coal City, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, at Silver Cross Medical Center in New Lenox.

Born Oct. 3, 1940, Dennis was a son of the late George and Irene (Cornale) Watson. He was raised in Coal City, and graduated from Coal City High School with the Class of 1958. On Dec. 26, 1959, Dennis married Elizabeth “Betty” Doyle in Assumption Catholic Church, and together they made their home in Coal City.

Dennis’ employment entailed working at Illinois Clay Products, the Joliet Arsenal, Caterpillar Tractor Company, and Uniroyal. He also worked as a mechanic at Boresi and Unger’s Service Station, and owned and operated Denny’s Service in Coal City. Dennis retired from Quantum/Equistar.

In his earlier years, in addition to square dancing, Denny was quite the sportsman who enjoyed softball, bowling on a league and playing golf. He took pleasure in camping at the Coal City Area Club, was an avid hunter, and made many memorable fishing trips to Canada.

Denny will be most remembered for his love of time spent with his family and grandkids.

Given that trumps were 2-2, the defenders could not stop declarer from taking five hearts, three diamonds, one club and a spade ruff in the dummy.

Divorcing husband wary of wife’s online deception Dear Abby: I have been married for 10 years. Four years ago, while waiting for our divorce to be finalized, I decided I’d start dating online and suggested my wife do the same. I didn’t know what to say, but at the age of 40, should he really be wanting sleepovers? It struck me as odd. I’m a private person and I’m not sure how to resolve this. I don’t want him to feel I’m rejecting his mom, but I don’t see why she needs to spend the night. I don’t want to walk on eggshells with her, because she called and scolded me about how I spoke to her son several months ago. Why has it been a year since your fiancé’s mother has been invited to visit? Certainly in

all this time you could have picked her up. A blanket “come anytime, just call first” isn’t a proper invitation – particularly if the person doesn’t drive.

If you prefer she not be an overnight guest, I don’t think your fiancé should force it.

And if you prefer she not meddle in your relationship with her son, I hope you made it clear to her when she “scolded” you. Of course, it wouldn’t have happened if her son hadn’t tattled to her – which should be a glimpse of what marriage to him may be like if you don’t get this straightened out now.
