hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When the Rev. James Steele of Morris was a young man, he saw seven panels from the French books “Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde” in the home of his assistant priest, the Rev. Thomas Brady, in the Edge-

water neighborhood in Chicago where he grew up.

“Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde” (1723-1743) is a nine-volume folio work published by Jean Frederic Bernard, a French-language bookseller in Amsterdam, and lavishly illustrated by Bernard Picart, one of the most famous engravers of the time.

“I fell in love with them when I saw them,” Steele said.

Today, those seven panels, which each depict six scenes, are in Steele’s possession, inherited after his friend and mentor died last spring.

Both men attended seminary in New York about six years apart, and Steele recalls stopping at the used bookstores in lower Manhattan,

where Brady shopped years earlier and found the panels taken from two volumes of the books.

“I suspect Tom didn’t spend more than $1 apiece for them,” Steele said.

He said many of the seminary students found art at the used bookstores and bought cheap frames from the fiveand-dime stores in the area to

decorate their sleeping quarters.

When Steele received the panels, he wasn’t sure what he had.

They were housed in their dime store frames and the backing was regular paper, not acid-free.

Nelson resigns from County Board By mIKE mALLoRy

mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – David Nelson, who represents District 2 on the Grundy County Board and serves as board vice chairman, has resigned.

His resignation is effective Jan. 31, according to a news release from the county.

Nelson, a Republican, was appointed to the board in 2014, and has served for the past 18 months in a variety of capacities.

Most recently, Nelson has been chairman of the County Board’s Finance Committee, and also served on two other committees.

“I want to thank David for his service to the community and to this board,” County Board Chairman David Welter said in the news release.

Welter called Nelson a strong leader who advocated for fiscal responsibility, understood the need to hire professionals for key positions and whose vision for a better future will be missed.

When reached Monday afternoon by phone, Welter said Nelson represented the people of Minooka well on the county level and always promoted the village in county decisions.

“It has been my distinct pleasure and honor to serve

the fine citizens of Grundy County over the past 18 months as a member and vice chairman of the County Board,” Nelson said in a written statement in the news release.

“In recent months, I’ve taken on additional responsibilities at my main employer David nelson with time and availability restrictions that I feel will inadequately allow for me to serve as a County Board member at a level commensurate to my perceived responsibilities of the position,” he said in the statement. “Without question, it has been one of my greatest honors to serve the residents of Grundy County during my brief tenure, and I consider my time spent with the county to be among the greatest experiences of my life thus far.”

A call to Nelson seeking additional comment was not immediately returned Monday.

Nelson’s term was scheduled to end in December 2018.

His vacancy must be filled within 60 days by appointment of the board chairman with the advice and consent of the board.

The board then will vote on a replacement for the empty vice chairman position, likely after a Republican caucus of current board members. Welter said he’s not yet aware of anyone interested in the position.

Welter said he has and will continue to appoint Republican Central Committee recommendations to fill board vacancies.

Nelson’s is the second resignation by a District 2 board member in the last two months, and follows that of John Galloway.

Galloway was replaced Jan. 12 by Republican Central Committee nominee Mireya Martin of Minooka.

Welter said he’d like to remind constituents that despite recent changes, great things are being accomplished by the board.

But for most, he said, the County Board is a part-time position.

“Sometimes personal lives change and you have to do what’s in the best interest of you and your family,” Welter said. “We hope a positive lasting effect remains when members move on.”

mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In the heart of winter lies an opportunity for young athletes to improve their soccer skills indoors and away from the elements.

Joliet Park District athletic superintendent Josh Barry said that besides knocking off the winter rust, now is a good time to improve for the upcoming spring season. To that end, the Joliet Park District – in collaboration with Minooka-based Three Rivers Soccer Club – is hosting a winter soccer camp for the third straight year.

The camps will take place from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on four upcoming Sundays – Jan. 31, Feb. 7, Feb. 14 and Feb. 28 – at the Joliet Park District Multi-Purpose Center Gym, 3000 W. Jefferson, Joliet.

“With spring try-outs coming up, this is an opportunity to get kids back into the mental process of the game, knock off the rust or maintain skills from the indoor season,” Barry said.

Three groups will be taught within the overall age range of 4- to 14-year-olds.

All coaches at the camp are certified by the Three Rivers Soccer Club and most, if not all, are affiliated at the youth club level. Players will be guided through a variety of Coerver Coaching soccer drills, a well-respected training regimen within in the sport, Barry said.

“We were an exceptional team passing the basketball,” Wanzer told The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle in a 2003 interview.

Director of nursing retires from Grundy County Health Department SuBmIttED REPoRt MORRIS – Judy Bailey will be retiring Friday from the Grundy County Health Department. Judy held many positions while employed for the health department.

Bailey started employment as the Communicable Disease Coordinator in 2002 until 2008.

After a break in employment, Bailey returned and took the position of the Mental Health Psychiatric Nurse until 2012 when she then took the position of Director of Nursing.

Bailey was active in many aspects of the health department.

She helped in the implementation of the GROWS garden and was seen many mornings talking to the plants and picking produce for We Care.

She also was involved in the Emergency Preparedness plans working closely with the Emergency Response Coordinator, Morris Hospital and Emergency Operations Center.

Bailey headed up the flu clinics and wrote the plans in the event of an H1N1 or

Ebola outbreak. She took her job seriously when it came to protecting the citizens of Grundy County.

Bailey often worked at the nursing department to help patients receive immunizations or WIC services.

She was a mentor to her staff and the staff of the health department. She monitored the work environment to help maintain staff health.

The health department staff and Board of Health members thank Judy for her 11 years of service to the health department and the citizens of Grundy County.

roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – In order for a lower seeded team to upset a top seed in a basketball tournament, a lot of things have to go right for the lower seed.

Two key factors are playing good defense and making the

most of their offensive opportunities. Coal City’s girls basketball team did half of those things Monday night in the semifinals of the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament against top-seeded Peotone.

The Lady Coalers (11-12) held the Blue Devils to just 14 points in the first half and 34

for the game, which kept the game close most of the way.

Unfortunately for coach Brad Schmitt’s gritty group of girls, the shots weren’t falling with the frequency they needed, and Peotone came away with a 34-19 victory to advance to the tournament championship.

“We knew we had to rely on our defense,” Schmitt said.

“We did a pretty good job of that. We slowed them down and forced them into a lot of bad shots that they didn’t want to take. They just had a little more offense than we did down the stretch.”

With 3:12 to play in the

third quarter, Mackenna Emerson made a free throw for Coal City, bringing the Lady Coalers to within 19-17. From that point, though, Peotone outscored Coal City 15-2 to notch the win.

Direct current stimulation’s effect on brain still unproven Dear Dr. K: I saw an ad for something called a “tDCS brain-stimulating device.”

It supposedly helps improve memory and thinking. Is it worth a try?

Dear Reader: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) transmits a current into the brain through electrodes (little metal plates) on the forehead or scalp. The current is weak; it comes from a 9-volt battery (the size used in a smoke detector).

People who undergo tDCS may feel their scalp tingle and hear a humming noise. Doctors can control whether the current activates – or suppresses – the neurons in your brain that lie beneath the electrodes.

The technique of tDCS has been tried on and off for more than 100 years. The tech-

I spoke to Dr. Daniel Press, a neurologist with the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He says that brain stimulation, if used carefully, looks promising. That’s especially true if combined with other therapies.

Several studies are underway to see if, and how, tDCS can be used to sharpen mental skills and treat symptoms of mind-

body disorders.

For now, tDCS is only FDA-approved to speed the absorption of certain medications through the skin. But it is being used “off label” to treat many other conditions. These include: • CHRONIC PAIN: tDCS may be effective for treating nerve pain. This includes back and leg pain, pain and numbness in hands and feet caused by diabetes, and fibromyalgia.

• DAMAGE FROM STROKE: Early research suggests that tDCS may improve a person’s ability to move and speak and to overcome spatial neglect.

That is the inability to notice or recognize objects on one side of the body.

• EATING DISORDERS: In early studies, tDCS has reduced

episodes of binge eating and bulimia in women with those eating disorders.

• MEMORY AND LEARNING: Many recent studies have evaluated the effect of tDCS on people’s ability to perform mental tasks. Studies have focused on tasks that involve recognizing visual patterns, recalling lists of unrelated words or doing math problems. Overall, the results indicate the technique is most likely to improve mental function when used together with other types of training, such as learning new systems for remembering names.

Some manufacturers are selling tDCS devices directly to consumers. But these devices aren’t regulated by the FDA, and there is no guarantee they are safe or effective. I would

avoid them.

I also would avoid going to a doctor who uses tDCS without studying its effects. It is an unproven treatment, though adverse effects seem to be few (temporary nausea, headache, irritation of the skin under the electrode). More important, tDCS is of unproven value. For that reason, the thing to do, if you’re interested in trying tDCS, is to enroll in one of the many clinical trials seeking volunteers.
