Morris • Brittany N. Hage, 22, was arrested by Morris police Thursday on a warrant charge of unlawful use of a credit card. She was given a March 5 court date.

Grundy County • Michael G. Saj Naj, 28, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Thursday on a M.A.N.S. warrant charge for delivery of a con-

trolled substance within 1,000 feet from a park.

• Valerie K. Hnetkovsky, 49, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Thursday on a charge of contempt of court.

• Gerald L. Kunz, 57, of Mazon, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Thursday on charges of driving under the influence, driving while license suspended, possession of cannabis 2.5 to 10 grams and on a failure-to-appear warrant on a charge of driving while license suspended. He also was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia, improper lane usage, speeding and failure to wear a seat belt. He was given a Feb. 9 court date.

Vicky May (Parrott) Carver, passed away suddenly on January 14th.

Vicky was born on October 9th 1956, in Joliet, IL to Virgil and Gloria (Rice) Parrott.

She is survived by her husband, John A. Carver; and sons, James (Mindy) Carver of Channahon, IL and Erik Carver of Morris, IL. She was a loving grandma to Kaitlin, Samantha, Evan, Brayden and Tamela.

Beloved sister to Logan (Mary Beth) Parrott of San Tan Valley, AZ and Denise Steinlicht of Minooka, IL. She is preceeded in death by her father, Virgil L. Parrott; sister, Kathy (Sam) Whitehead; brother, Kevin Parrott; and brother-in-law, Edwin (Butch) Steinlicht.

There will be a private memorial for the family at a later date.

LARRY L. WILLIAMS Born: June 7, 1953; in Tutwiler, MS Died: Jan. 17, 2015; in Bloomington, IL Larry L. Williams, age 61, of Gardner, passed away at 7:55 a.m., Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Asta Care Center of Bloomington.

Larry was born on June 7, 1953 in Tutwiler, Mississippi, the son of Ernest and Wylodine Hood

Williams.

He married Debra Kibler on November 10, 1973 in Clarksdale, Mississippi. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, Wylodine Williams of Grenada, Mississippi, three children, Dina (Chris) Gibson of Normal, IL, Larry (Danielle) Williams II of Fall River, WI and Jessica Williams of Normal, IL; five grandchildren, Tyler, Cheyanne, Andrew, Ashlyn and Davin; two sisters, Toni (Ken) Courtwright of Crowley, TX and Barbara (Danny) Hill of Tillatoba, Mississippi; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a sister, Carolyn Gail Williams. Larry was a machinist for Caterpillar in Joliet for over thirty years.

Larry loved baseball and was a Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed playing baseball, himself, as well as coaching all of his children. Larry thoroughly enjoyed watching Westerns, and was especially a fan of John Wayne.

Spending time with his family was most important to Larry. He will be dearly missed.

Simpson to intern at Disney World

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Growing up, Caitlyn Simpson loved going to Disney World. She knew then that, one day, she wanted to work at the land of magic.

“I’ve been going pretty much every year since I was 7 years old,” the Morris native said. “My top three jobs I’ve wanted in life are working at Disney, working on a cruise ship and performing in a Broadway-type show.”

Simpson’s dream has come true, as she prepares to fly to Orlando, Florida, to begin an internship Feb. 2, spending at least one semester of her junior year of college performing and entertaining guests.

Her mother and dance teacher, Pam Simpson, said it’s the perfect time for her to go.

“She’s a junior, but she’s ahead enough credits to be a senior, so spending the semester there won’t put her behind,” she said.

Simpson, who attends Western Michigan University, heard Disney auditions were coming to Michigan, so she decided to see if she had what it took to make her dream job come true.

She did the live audition before applying online to see if she could make it through the three performer cuts to earn her way in.

“They had us do a short, easy routine three times, and then made the first cut,” Simpson said. “Then we had to do an animation type routine, and they made their second cut.

They ended up keeping me and a smaller group after the third and final cut so they could video us for a parade-type performance.”

After going through webbased and phone interviews, Simpson found out she would

Her mother said she was surprised Simpson made it on the first try. At the same time, as a dance teacher, she wasn’t surprised since her daughter has a great work ethic and has auditioned her entire life.

“She has always focused on the details, and she turns it on when she performs,” Simpson’s mother said.

Simpson will be on the job from her Feb. 2 start date until Aug. 7, and will earn college credit, which she can transfer to her university.

Local officials wait for answers on licensing delays Minooka, Gardner among county villages waiting to hear about medical marijuana status

But he’s curious to find out whether Medicann LLC – a company that’s shown interest in building a cultivation center in Minooka — will get the green light in the highly competitive Illinois State Police District 5.

“Any time we can attract a new business, that creates new revenues for the village,” Duffy said. “The benefits to us are black and white: the tax revenue, the jobs, good medical jobs, for our area.”

The decision is now in the hands of Gov. Bruce Rauner, who once called the selection process “rigged” and subject to cronyism. Most recently, Rauner has said he wants to assess the program to make sure it’s being run and managed properly.

Appeal filed on decision over Gardner fire district objection

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com GARDNER – A candidate for the Gardner Fire Protection District Board has appealed a decision that one of her opponents can remain on the April ballot.

The Grundy County Electoral Board ruled in favor of Todd Perkins last week and overruled Barb Baker’s objection to his petition to run for the fire district board.

On Wednesday, Baker filed a motion for judicial review of the Electoral Board’s decision.

It is scheduled to go before Grundy County Judge Lance Peterson at 9 a.m. Friday, according to judici.com.

“I feel it’s going to go my way again,” Perkins said Friday.

The cases cited in the Electoral Board’s decision were already appellate court cases, he said, and he believes the decision would withstand appeal.

“I’m honestly not too worried about it,” Perkins said.

There are two positions available on the board: one for a four-year term and the other for a six-year term.

Baker, running for the sixyear term, filed objections to the petitions of Perkins and Michael Pasternak; both also are running for the six-year term. The Electoral Board voted to allow Perkins on the

Under Illinois’ medical marijuana pilot program, which sunsets in 2017, the state is expected to grant up to 21 permits for cultivation centers and up to 60 permits for dispensaries.

Regional competition is fierce. Fourteen applicants, including Medicann, have filed to open a cultivation center in Illinois State Police District 5, which covers Grundy, Kendall and Will counties.

It’s the highest number of applicants in any one state police district in Illinois. Only one will be chosen.

If the facility planned for the Minooka Road Industrial Park is approved, Medicann would pay a 1.75 percent village tax on its gross sales during the first five years of

operation. That amount will increase to 5 percent in the fifth year.

Medicann also would contribute $10,000 annually to a charitable organization in town, selected by the village.

Some of the tax revenue would go toward local policing and anti-drug efforts, Duffy said.

Duffy said he hopes the state makes a decision sooner rather than later.

“I would think the state has an obligation to review those applications properly,” he said. “You have businesses that paid money to the state.

To me, they at least have an obligation to acknowledge them and at least get an answer out.

To sit and do nothing, that does kind of worry me.”

Another cultivation center applicant in Grundy County is Bill and David Mennie, who own Mennie Machinery,

a family-owned company in Mark. Gardner officials unanimously approved Mennies’ application late last year.

Just how long it will take before the state awards licenses is anybody’s guess. In Will County, officials aren’t too concerned about the delay, given that it’s Rauner second week in the governor’s seat, said Nick Palmer, chief of staff for Will County Executive Larry Walsh.

“Now, six months from now, if we’re still waiting, it’ll be a different story,” Palmer said. “We respect that it’s a new administration and that he wants things to be done right.”

The state’s deadline was Sept. 22. Since then, Illinois has earned more than $5 million in nonrefundable fees, which were required with the application forms.

year. She described Carey as a very talented alto with a beautiful, round tone and a great ear. Kren, a tenor, also has a nice tone, she said, with a very strong voice and good musicianship.

Napolitano described Roseland’s voice as a strong bass with a natural deepness, and Allbert has a beautiful tone with great intonation and a very light and free style.

“I was really surprised and really happy to make All-State Honors Choir,” Carey said.

MORRIS – Five Morris students have risen to the top of the high school music world, selected from thousands of Chicago-area students to join the Illinois Music Education Association’s All-State band and choir.

Selected for IMEA All-State Honors Choir are Morris Community High School senior Jessica Carey and junior Michael Kren. Seniors Adam Roseland and Austin Allbert made All-State Choir, and senior Jiasui Ding, a flautist, made All-State Band and will participate in auditions for Honors Band at the All-State Conference next week.

Choral director Alyssa Napolitano said the auditions were extremely competitive.

Only 1 percent of high school choir students make the honors choir each year, and 2 percent make the regular choir.

Last year, no Morris students made the cut, and the year before, only one – Jacob O’Marrah – made IMEA choir and only one – flautist Harmony Alford – made the IMEA band. For a few years before that, no Morris students made the cut, Napolitano said.

“It’s a big deal in the music world,” Napolitano said.

“We have a ton of students audition from all around the southwest suburbs.”

Four pieces of music were given to the choir students to learn for the audition, she said, and they were judged on vocal tone, tonal beauty, intonation, good balance of range and a cappella ability.

The most important, Napolitano said, were the skills section of sight reading, which all of her students practice every day; rhythm reading, which is their ability to clap a rhythm; and scales.

“They look for the best musicians,” she said, “not just the best singers.”

The judges look for correctness, how well the students played the pieces, whether they played the correct tempo in the correct style, and how much emotion they put into the pieces.

“You have to be close to perfect on every level,” Muraida said.

“I’m extremely proud of her for making it,” he said. “Jessie is very dedicated. She’s a hard worker. She’s motivated, and she’s very encouraging to other students. She has a very clear tone – a gorgeous sound and is very meticulous with her music.”

Ding emigrated from China to the United States four years ago and joined the band right away. It was a totally new thing for her. To help her get up to speed, she began private flute lessons with renowned Morris flautist Tiffany Morrison.

Ding said she also plans on getting her younger sister, who still lives in China, involved in band.

The IMEA All-State Conference and Festival will be held Jan. 28-31 at the Peoria Civic Center.

In Baker’s objection against Perkins, she claimed he did not securely fasten his petitions as mandated in election code.

The Electoral Board ruled Perkins’ petitions were fastened securely and his name would appear on the April 7 ballot. A judge now will hear arguments and see the same evidence the Electoral Board saw before rendering a decision.

Baker’s attorney, Scott Pyles of Rathbun, Scervenyak & Kozol, LLC in Joliet, said Friday the way Perkins had his petitions fastened was not enough.

“A paper clip is not enough,” he said.

The petition for judicial reviews states the board was mistaken when it stated Perkins’ petitions were securely fastened.

Pyles said he believes that some of the case law cited in the Electoral Board’s decision actually supports his client’s argument that a paper clip cannot be used.

The Electoral Board’s written decision states Baker did not present testimony of evidence that Perkins’ pages could be separated while paper clipped, and that there was no testimony that anything occurred to the petitions that would call the integrity of the paperwork into question.

Speaker Madigan big part of the problem The Illinois House chose its leader for 2015-17 earlier this month.

As it has done for all but two years since 1983, the membership, dominated by Democrats, elected state Rep. Michael Madigan, D-Chicago.

For 30 years now, Madigan has been speaker of the House – in control of everything of importance. His rule was interrupted only once, from 1995 to 1997, when Republicans briefly held sway.

Madigan, 72, is the longest-serving House speaker in Illinois history. He solidified his control in the late 1990s when he was elected chairman of the state Democratic Party. House Democrats, therefore, must stay in Madigan’s good graces as legislators and campaigners in order to succeed.

Whatever legislation Madigan allows to advance, he obviously keeps one eye on the next election and how each bill will impact his party’s chances.

There is no doubt Madigan is a skilled legislator, and he knows how to gain and maintain power.

But to what end?

If after 30 years of Madigan as speaker, Illinois government had balanced budgets, served the public’s needs effectively and efficiently, and was debt-free, that would be equally as impressive as Madigan’s long reign.

But as we all know, that is not the case.

The state is deeply in debt; it owes billions in overdue bills.

Its unfunded pension debt alone is more than $100 billion. A $2 billion shortfall is expected in the current budget. Schools are hurting, as are all state agencies.

Results are what count, and Madigan has not delivered.

For the past 12 years, Madigan’s party controlled the House, the Senate, and the governor’s office, so it’s not as if he hasn’t had

the opportunity to work with like-minded colleagues to make Illinois government operate better.

For the past two years, Madigan’s House has had a veto-proof majority. The Senate, under Senate President John Cullerton, has had one, too.

Those veto-proof majorities were maintained in the 2014 election, meaning Madigan and Cullerton will ultimately call the shots in the Legislature, even as new Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican, begins his administration.

Madigan has regularly shut out Republicans from meaningful decision-making but decries their lack of support for Democratic-sponsored proposals.

With Rauner preparing to propose a new budget and other initiatives, which Republicans will be called upon to support, Madigan last week told members of the minority party, “I wish to welcome you back – back to the active participation of state government.”

Madigan expects that participation, of course, to be on his terms.

If Madigan is sincere, he should do more than call for Republican support on difficult roll call votes, of which he predicted many are ahead.

He should allow more than just a trickle of Republican-sponsored bills to escape his Rules Committee and advance to the House floor.

He shouldn’t postpone action on major bills, such as the budget, until the very end of the session.

And he should work with the Senate and Rauner to gain greater results for Illinois residents.

Madigan can become part of the solution to the state’s many woes, if he chooses to.

If he doesn’t, that will be a real problem for Illinois.

President Obama’s rush to empty Guantanamo alarms lawmakers It took a while for Republicans to catch on to what President Obama is doing with the U.S. terrorist prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. But now that it’s clear Obama is rushing to empty the place, Republicans are stepping up efforts to stop him. Whether they succeed could have a serious impact on national security, as well as on more general GOP efforts to rein in runaway executive power in the White House.

Obama has accelerated Guantanamo releases and transfers since last November’s midterm elections.

Other than the five senior Taliban leaders released in exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl last May – a deal Obama made in secret, ignoring the law that required him to notify Congress – the president released just one other Guantanamo inmate in 2014 before the elections.

Since the elections, the doors have opened. Obama released seven prisoners in November, 15 in December, and five more on Wednesday.

The hurry has alarmed a

VIEWS Byron York number of lawmakers, even those who share Obama’s desire to close the prison.

Now, several Republican senators – Kelly Ayotte, N.H.; John McCain, Ariz.; Lindsey Graham, S.C.; and Richard Burr, N.C. – have introduced a new bill slow the president down. The legislation would do five things: 1) Impose a two-year suspension on transferring high- and medium-risk detainees from Guantanamo to foreign countries.

2) Create a two-year ban on releases to Yemen, a country Ayotte calls the “Wild, Wild West for terrorists.”

3) Raise the standard for release, even of prisoners who are not judged high- or medium-risk.

4) Extend current law prohibiting Obama from transferring Guantanamo inmates to the United States or building a prison for them in this country.

5) Require public disclosure – not just classified notification of a few members of Congress – of information about detainees, including whether they represent a risk.

The law already requires Obama to give Congress 30 days notice before releasing Guantanamo inmates. Other than the Bergdahl case, lawmakers say the White House has fulfilled that requirement. But the problem is, such notifications are secret and given only to a few selected committee chairs on Capitol Hill. The result is that there is no public discussion of the wisdom of a particular decision before it takes place.

In any event, Congress will need to act fast. Obama is determined to move quickly, even as terrorism proliferates in the areas to which he will release more inmates in the future.

It’s already happened this week, and each day could bring news of more releases.

PLAINFIELD – When Minooka boys basketball met Plainfield North back on Dec. 5, the Indians led by 20 points early in the fourth quarter and lost.

In Friday night’s Southwest Prairie rematch, Minooka led virtually the entire way but needed good things to happen in the final few seconds to escape with a thrilling 66-65 victory.

Plainfield North (14-4, 6-2), which came in leading the SPC race, took its only lead, 65-64, when Richie Elias tapped in a rebound with 27 seconds left.

Minooka (11-12, 4-4) got the ball into Joe Butler’s hands, and with the clock ticking under 10 seconds, he drove into traffic in the lane.

He spotted teammate Nick Clemmons under the basket on the right side of the lane, and Clemmons knocked it down with 6 seconds remaining for a 66-65 Indians lead.

“I was going to try to get it in deep,” Butler said. “Then I saw Nick’s guy leave him to come help on me, and I got him the ball. I trusted him that he would make it.”

North got a timeout with 5.2 seconds on the clock and did what was expected. The Tigers got the ball into Trevor Stumpe’s hands. All he had done was score 17 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, including three 3-pointers, to bring North back from a deficit that was as large as 50-41 with 6:15 left.

Stumpe took a pass from Kevin Krieger and dribbled to the right wing. With Joe Butler and brother, Jon, hounding him, he beat the buzzer with a 3-point attempt that rattled around and fell off to end it.

The main man offensively for Minooka, however, was junior guard Larry Roberts, who scored 26 points on 9-of13 shooting. He made five 3-pointers without a miss in the first half, and it would have been six had he not stuck his toe on the line on No. 6. He also hit his only long-range attempt in the second half and finished 6 of 7 on threes.

“Everything felt like it was going in,” Roberts said. “I was looking for my shot. I had confidence they would go in, but I usually feel confident.

Sometimes, they don’t go in, though.”

“Roberts got us going offensively,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “Joe [Butler] is Joe, and Jon [Butler] did a great job on Trevor [Stumpe].

He is a great player.”

The nine-point lead Minooka had early in the fourth quarter matched its largest.

The difference at halftime

was 30-26.

North tied the score at 53 when Stumpe nailed a 3-pointer from the left corner with 3:20 left after one of the 10 turnovers Minooka committed against the Tigers’ pressure in the fourth quarter.

However, Minooka did not trail until Elias’ basket with 27 seconds left.

After what happened the last time against North, the Indians were not about to let this one get away.

“I’m still in disbelief we lost that first one to them,” Roberts said.

“We wanted to prove to ourselves that we can beat them,” Joe Butler said “We want to show we can finish it out.”

That, they did.

The Minooka sophomores (15-3, 7-1), who lead the SPC, broke away from a tie at 29 after three quarters to beat North, 40-36. John Carnagio scored nine points, Antonio Milazzo eight, Keegan Graebner seven and Zachery Schultz six for the Indians.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – In the past few games it has played, the Minooka girls basketball team has had to use a run late in the second quarter or early in the third to either break open a tight game or take the lead.

On Friday night against Southwest Prairie Conference rival Plainfield North, the Indians didn’t wait nearly as long.

Plainfield North took a 4-2 lead in the early going, but that lead proved to be shortlived. Minooka (16-5, 7-2) proceeded to score the next 16 points and take an 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Indians cruised after that and finished with a 55-42 victory.

“We talked before the game about getting off to a good start,” Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said. “We were able to do that and get a nice cushion. After that, you can play them even and get the win.

“I have to hand it to Plainfield North. they made a nice little run at us in the fourth quarter to get it down to 11 points, but our girls responded and got it back to 19.”

The Minooka offense was working well, as most of the shots the Indians took came from near the basket. Sydney Arlis led the way with 21 points, while Kelly Carnagio scored 11, Alesix Pease had eight and Brooklyn Bachmann seven.

“This team is very balanced,” Liberatore said. “Sydney has been our most consistent scorer, but the rest rotate on a night-to-night basis. We had a game earlier this week where Sydney didn’t have a basket, but she had eight assists. That’s the type of team this is. The girls are very unselfish, and they are very good at spotting the open person and getting them the ball.”

It was the defense, though, that caught Liberatore’s eye, particularly that of Arlis, who held Plainfield North’s Jordan Heberg to just seven

MANTENO – Seneca wrestler Sage Friese reached a pair of milestones Thursday in the Fighting Irish’s double-dual meet with Herscher and Manteno.

Friese, who sports a 32-0 record so far this season, recorded his 100th career pin and 150th career win when he pinned Manteno’s Mike Musser in 2:16 in the 145-pound weight class.

Against Herscher, he wrestled at 152 and defeated Erick Johnson by technical fall, 19-3. Seneca lost to Herscher, 65-17, but beat Manteno, 48-25.

Winners against Herscher were Colt Aldrich (138), Anthony Hasse (145) and Friese.

Surgery can both cause and treat abdominal adhesions Dear Doctor K: I had abdominal surgery last year. Soon after, I started experiencing severe pain and swelling in my abdomen. It turns out I have abdominal adhesions.

I’d never heard of them.

What are they, and how are they treated?

Dear Reader: Abdominal adhesions are bands of fibrous scar tissue. They can cause organs that are normally not connected to stick to one another or to the wall of the abdomen.

Abdominal adhesions most commonly develop after abdominal surgery. Less often, adhesions form in people who develop an infection or other type of inflammation in the abdomen.

In most patients, adhesions do not cause any

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff symptoms. In a small number of people, however, they do. Some people appear to inherit genes that make them more likely to form adhesions. Some are just unlucky: Adhesions form in a location that makes them more likely to pinch and block the intestines.

In any event, the fibrous bands of scar tissue can block the intestines either completely or partially. This blockage is called a bowel obstruction. It can cause cramping abdominal pain.

Sometimes an area of intestine alternates between be-

ing blocked, then unblocked.

As a result, symptoms come and go.

More significant intestinal obstruction can cause: • severe, cramping abdominal pain; • nausea and vomiting; • swelling of the abdomen; • inability to pass gas and absent or infrequent bowel movements; • signs of dehydration.

These include dry skin, dry mouth and tongue, severe thirst, infrequent urination, fast heart rate and low blood pressure.

Rarely, a portion of the bowel twists tightly around a band of adhesions. This cuts off the normal blood supply to the twisted bowel, causing “strangulation.”

That section of bowel begins

to die. When this emergency happens, immediate abdominal surgery is required to remove the adhesions and restore blood flow to the bowel.

During surgery, a surgeon removes as much as possible of the scar tissue causing the blockage. In performing the surgery, the surgeon often spots other adhesions besides the ones causing the blockage. The patient is already under anesthesia and the abdomen has been opened. Therefore, other adhesions also are removed to prevent them from causing trouble in the future. (I’ve put an illustration of surgery to remove adhesions on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

So surgery is both a cause of, and a treatment for,

abdominal adhesions. When surgery is done to remove an intestinal obstruction caused by adhesions, the surgery can cause adhesions to form again and create a new obstruction. Laparoscopic surgery, in which several small incisions are made instead of one large incision, can reduce the risk of abdominal adhesions.

So the surgeon’s decision on whether to perform surgery can be a complicated one. When adhesions are causing strangulation, however, it’s not complicated: Surgery is not only necessary, but often lifesaving.
