By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – White Oak second-grader Skylar Sparks donned a beret and grabbed a paint brush Thursday to portray artist Vincent Van Gogh during the annual second-grade wax museum.

“I’m pretty much an artist myself,” she said. “I started being an artist at age 3. My grandma scrapbooks and is a painter, and I like my grandma a lot. She bought me paints.”

While Sparks prefers painting puppies to sunflowers, she still enjoyed learning about the famous artist.

“I didn’t know much about him until I started researching him,” she said. “When he was painting the sunflower, it started to rain and he lost his brushes. A little girl brought them back to him.”

White Oak Elementary School second-grade teacher Sarah Farmer said learning fun facts about the person they are portraying is just one thing students learn from the lesson.

“It’s a good learning experience,” she said. “They learn about people from history, and they learn public speaking.”

Students are encouraged to pick someone from history, or someone who has died, to research. Their subject should be someone who fits their personality, Farmer said.

They perform their speech in front of classmates until the day the museum opens to other classes, parents and community members.

Those walking through each wax museum room Thursday pressed a sticker representing a button to activate the speech each student memorized. The character then came to life, standing and telling their story.

Savannah Wood picked Nadia Comaneci, a Romanian gymnast who won three gold medals in the 1976 summer Olympics and two golds in the 1980 summer Olympics.

“I’m in gymnastics,” Wood said. “I’m good at it like she was. I have two gold medals.”

Wood was surprised to learn the gymnast, who was the first female awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic gymnastics event, didn’t start the sport until she was in kindergarten. Wood started at 3 years old.

She said she likes that she

looks like Comaneci and she aspires to be like her one day.

Alexia Arellano picked her musical hero, Aaliyah, to represent.

“I picked Aaliyah because she [was] a real good singer, she even helped people learn to sing,” Arellano said. “She’s a fast singer and I like fast singing.”

Between the six second-grade classrooms, a host of people were represented, from presidents such as Abraham Lincoln and Jimmy Carter, to royalty such as Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana.

Some students chose their subject for personal reasons.

Miles Olson chose Miles Davis because he was named after him; Kaylah Meyers chose Pocahontas because her mom said she has the same hair as the Native American who was born Matoaka.

“My aunt does a song about Pocahontas,” Meyers said.

“I learned a lot about her. I didn’t know she helped the Indians. She’s pretty cool.”

After researching her, Meyers said she knows Pocahontas traveled through Virginia and where she died.

Braidwood Electoral Board overrules objection

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – Despite an objection filed against one of its candidates for mayor, the city of Braidwood will see three people running for mayor on the April 7 ballot.

Incumbent Mayor William Rulien, Robert Snedeker and James Vehrs are all running for the city’s top spot.

An objection was filed against Vehrs – who also ran and lost against Rulien previously – but was overruled by the City of Braidwood Municipal Officers’ Electoral Board earlier this week.

The objection was filed by Richard Girot, as a resident of Braidwood. Girot also serves as the city’s police chief and city administrator.

The Electoral Board’s decision states that Girot objected to Vehrs’ petition for mayor because he had an overdue debt to the city of Braidwood, and

The board found that Vehrs was in debt to the city when the objection was filed, but since he filed for the election, has since paid off his debt. Therefore, it ruled that according to the amended code in 2013, a person could only be disqualified for owing the city money if it is not paid by the time the oath of office is taken.

“Although it may appear that at the time the candidate filed his nomination papers he was in arrears on a debt owed to the city of Braidwood, he has since made his account current with a payment,” according to the board’s decision.

Since he no longer owes the money, the board found he could stay on the ballot.

Morris High School approves $5,000 less in bonds this year

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Community High School will again issue $1.44 million in general obligation school bonds to meet the district’s cash flow needs.

The amount is about $5,000 less than last year, superintendent Pat Halloran said.

The school board approved the bond issuance at its meeting last week.

The district issues working cash bonds as its funding mechanism for district operations. It annually issues about $1.5 million in bonds, except in 2012, when it issued $3.5 million to cover both 2012 and 2013, saving about $29,000 a year in fees associated with the working cash bonds.

Board President Denny Best said Wednesday. “We’re very pleased.”

Fifth Third Securities Inc. gave the lowest interest rate in the bidding process, at 1.17 percent. The bonds will be paid back over two years.

“We’ve maintained a Moody A1 Rating for the last several years, which helps out in the bond market,” Halloran said.

The district has issued working cash bonds since 1978, he said, but in 1999, when Midwest Generation came online, it generated enough tax dollars that the district did not need to issue the bonds anymore.

When Midwest Generation closed and the district lost 35 percent of its equalized assessed value for property taxes in 2004, the district needed to borrow again to meet operating expenses.

Howie Crouse, PMA financial adviser for the school district, gave a presentation to the board in November, which showed current debt, working cash limit and the proposal for the 2015 series bonds.

“The district could get as much as $2.2 million,” Crouse said in November. “But with

the district’s desire to keep the tax rate down, we’d advise $1.4 million in working cash bonds.”

Halloran said it would take either $2 million in reductions or additional revenue for the

board to not have to issue the bonds anymore.

He also said if general state aid was paid at 100 percent, it would affect the amount the district needed to issue each year.

6 Immaculate Conception School to celebrate Catholic Schools Week MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated in Catholic schools throughout the nation next week, including in Morris.

This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools – Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service,” according to a news release from Immaculate Conception School in Morris. These three points will be emphasized at ICS, which also will celebrate its 125th anniversary during Catholic Schools Week.

The school community will begin the events with an open house in the school following all Masses on Saturday and Sunday. Science projects, as well as several other academic projects and student work, will be on display. Also, a collection of items depicting the school’s history will be shown.

Monday will be Spirit Day. Students should wear blue and gold, and a pep rally will be at 2 p.m. in the Dr. Connor Gym. Parents are invited to visit the school and their children’s classes from 7:55 to 9:50 a.m. Tuesday. The Student Council will hold a dodge ball tournament after school that day, as well.

On Wednesday, there will be parent visitation for preschool families. Student Council will serve breakfast to the staff and Wednesday’s events will emphasize service.

Donations will be collected for We Care of Grundy County’s Souper Bowl of Caring.

In addition, on Wednesday, Thursday and Jan. 30, the Student Council will collect new hats, scarves, gloves and socks for the Grundy County homeless.

Thursday will be Turn Back the Clock Day, with many of the day’s events emphasizing the school’s history.

The Parents Club will host a lunch for the staff Thursday, and several reading stations will be set up for story time between 2 and 2:30 p.m.

There is no charge for participating. The ICS Student Council is raffling a motor scooter, and the drawing will be at 8 p.m. Family Night of Catholic Schools Week always is well attended, according to the news release. Last year, more than 200 people participated.

ICS is a caring community that emphasizes the importance of faith and family, according to the news release.

The curriculum is designed to challenge students to seek excellence in every phase of their lives. The school emphasizes the importance of giving a lifetime of service to others.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Even though there are swimmers from other schools in the water, Morris boys swimming coach Andrew Porth wants each participant on his team to compete against only one person.

To that end, the Redskins were successful Thursday night, and they also beat Ottawa, 101-75, in a dual Northern Illinois Big 12 meet at the District 101 Rec Center.

“We had a great contest against a very good Ottawa team,” Porth said. “Our guys came out to swim today.

“I am always telling them that their real opponent is the clock. If they can do better each time out than they did the last time, then it has been a success.”

Ottawa won the first event, the 200-meter medley relay, in a time of 2:02.01, with the Morris team of Lucas Riley, Dan Anfield, Kevin Sheridan and Marcus Schluntz finishing second in 2:22.62.

Sean Smith then provided the most exciting moment of the night for the Redskins, overtaking Ottawa’s Jordan Ovanic on the final length of the 200-meter freestyle and winning in 2:14.50 against Ovanic’s 2:14.53.

“Sean has been that kind of swimmer for us all year,” Porth said. “He was a distance swimmer for us last year, but he’s a good sprinter. He just stays with the guy in the next land and he can outkick him at the end.”

Morris’ Jackson Riley (2:40.56) and Lucas Riley (3:10.58) were second and th ird in the 200-meter individual medley, respectively, and Jordan Ramirez took second in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 26.21. Schluntz was fourth in that race in 30.67, while Kevin Sheridan was fifth in 31.67.

Ottawa did not have any divers, so Morris’ Bailey Rath was first with a score of 160.15, Sheridan took second with 147.35 and Jeremy Gregorec was third with 128.85.

Ramirez powered through the water to win the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:01.88, while teammate Ethan Frobish was third in 1:30.86. Smith won the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:01.99, while Soren Knudsen was fourth in 1:16.90.

In the 400 freestyle, Anfield otok second in 5:28.09, while Frobish was third in 6:04.00.

Morris’ team of Smith, Jackson Riley, Anfield and Ramirez won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:54.50, with Rath, Sheridan, Schluntz and Lucas Riley taking third in 2:04.89.

Knudson won the 100-meter backstroke with a tim eof 1:10.85, with Jackson Riley taking third in 1:25.59 and Lucas Riley fourth in 1:32.69. Schluntz was second in the 100-meter

breatstroke in 1:31.50, with Brett Simmons (1:31.51) third and Dallas Hastings (1:33.57) fourth. Morris’ team of Smith, Jackson Riley, Anfield and Ramirez was second in the 400-meter freestyle relay in 4:24.88.

“The only person you are facing every day is yourself,” Schluntz, a co-captain, said.

“The guy next to you may be way better than the last guy that was next to you, so it’s hard to judge yourself that way. The only way is the clock. I have been very happy with how our season is progressing.”

Jackson Riley, another captain, agreed with Schluntz.

“We are getting better as a team,” he said. “At the start of the season, times go down quite a bit after you set your base time. Then you hit a plateau and it’s hard to get those times to go down. That’s when you really have to work at it, and everyone here has really been working hard.”

Professionalism takes a hit in Lake Toho tourney When you hear the term professional, what does it mean to you? For some, it might be a moniker for anyone who receives payment for a service performed. For others, it might mean a person that is at the top of their respective profession. Some may even refer to the term as a way to act or carry oneself. Whatever your personal definition of professional, each of the above characteristics do apply.

In the fishing industry, a lot rides on the input from professionals. Just about every freshwater species, and many saltwater, have competitive tournaments. Anglers vie for anything from a few bucks at a local club event on a small body of water, to hundreds of thousands of dollars on top level circuits. These pros drive their respective industries and help develop, promote, and sell the products that we actually see and use.

At the first Bassmaster Southern Open, a very unfortunate event occurred that brings up the nature of what a professional is. The first contest took place last weekend at Lake Toho in central Florida.

During the event many of the competitors chose to lock through to other waters.

If you have ever seen locks, or been through a lock on a waterway, you know that it is a very slow, and tedious process. There is nothing quick about it. Depending on whether the lock is “up” or “down” you may have to wait a long time for passage. If you are fishing for big dollars and the clock is running, your decision making process may become clouded and poor judgment follows.

At this event, the locks were excessively crowded, patience evaporated, and anglers jammed themselves into the open lock trying to

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers get through quicker. Boats were damaged. Some minor, and several pretty severely. It was during this bumping and pushing that two competitors lost their cool.

Ish Monroe and Keith Poche got into an altercation.

Poche’s boat rammed Monroe’s. Ish then hopped aboard Keith’s boat and started yelling at him. One thing led to another and before long both competitors were in the water.

I wasn’t there. Not many people were, but the reports from those that witnessed it indicate a lot of yelling, pushing, and childish behavior took place. Both of these guys lost sight of what most of us would call being professional. As of the time I wrote this article,

In other sports, there are clear codes of conduct that athletes must adhere to. We could go on-and-on about the nature of the rules, if they are too lax, or if they are even abided by, but the point remains, they do exist. Each year athletes are suspended games, fined, or even ejected from a competition because of a lack of professionalism. Why should pro fishing be any different?

I can say from experience fishing these events that a perfectly good-natured, good-decision making adult can do crazy things when competing. It drives people to make choices that they normally would never do. The farthest I climbed up the ladder of competitive fishing involved the B.A.S.S. Opens, just as the event in question.

As with most sports, the anglers at these events are

extremely confident in their abilities. You can see it in their eyes. The way they walk, talk, how they carry themselves, it all gives off an aura of self-assuredness. Sometimes, that aggressive nature gets people into trouble. Think of the NFL playoffs last week.

How can you survive on that gridiron of extreme violence if you didn’t believe in yourself and your talents?

If you are going to carry around and use the term professional, it demands a responsibility to act that way.

It will be interesting to see if any sort of punishment comes down from B.A.S.S. It should.

In the meantime, the rest of us will do our best to live up to high standards of professional conduct. Hopefully, it trickles up this time.

Our union needs unity to move forward In an era of increasingly grotesque wealth concentration and stubborn wage stagnation, shifting the federal tax burden from the middle toward the highest incomes shouldn’t be as controversial as it is.

Nevertheless, the proposal President Barack Obama put forward in his State of the Union address Tuesday, which would raise taxes on investments by hundreds of billions of dollars to fund credits for families of more modest means, is the Democratic counterpoint to endless Republican attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act: An appeal to popular and partisan sentiment that will go nowhere in the current political environment.

Bearing the scars of past attempts to bargain with Republicans, and having presided over the grueling path to an economic recovery that has finally gained momentum, Obama was certainly entitled to stake out the territory he hopes his party will stand for going into the next presidential election. But this State of the Union address was delivered to the most hostile Congress of his tenure, with Republicans in full control for the first time. If the last two years of Obama’s presidency are to be more than a prelude to the next administration – and let’s hold out fervent, if not desperate, hope that they will be – the president and Congress will have to do more than reiterate their favorite partisan attachments.

Some aspects of Obama’s stated priorities in his “fourth quarter” could appeal to both teams. More tax credits and funding for child care, higher education and two-earner families should have broad resonance, especially as income inequality and stagnation have become a more bipartisan concern. Obama’s stated support for more free-trade agreements and an authorization of use of force against Islamic State extremists also hold appeal for the party opposite.

To have any chance of advancing his legislative agenda amid divided government, Obama will have to make true concessions. The Keystone XL pipeline is one obvious opportunity, being not nearly as world-shaking as its enemies or friends have suggested. Completing the project simply isn’t going to make or break global climate change or Canadian tar-sands exploitation. The president ought to unclog the project in exchange for Republican movement on one of his initiatives.

Obama previously proposed corporate-tax reductions, a concession that could be the basis for a larger tax-reform deal. Both the president and Republican leaders have expressed support for such a negotiation.

Of course, the dominant theme on both sides – and the safest prediction – is polarization. But any substantial improvement of the government’s collective state is unlikely without a degree of union.

Ignoring religion is ‘anti-journalism’ When British media critic Jenny Taylor talks to journalists about why they need to take religion seriously, she tells them stories about news stories – mostly stories many journalists try to avoid.

“The majority of the world is deeply religious. That small bit of it that still dominates the world’s agenda – the secular West – is deeply unaware of what drives the rest,” she said during the recent “Getting Religion” conference in Westminster, England, led by the Open University and her own Lapido Media network.

Thus, she argued, “The world is in grave danger from the West’s own conceits and complacency. ...

In Britain we have been trained through cultural prejudice and ideological pressure not to ‘do God.’ I was told by a BBC press officer that ‘we leave our religion at the door when we come to work.’

“The intention may be the scrupulous avoidance of perceived bias, but misunderstood, it leads to blindness and an inability to report the facts.”

One story has been unfolding in East London, where controversy has long swirled around plans to build the massive Abbey Mills Mosque near Olympic Stadium.

How massive? It would hold 9,000 people – about four times the capacity of the iconic St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Many Muslims accuse “TJ” of opposing efforts to help believers, especially women, assimilate into Western life.

But the key, said Taylor, is that this story has received little mainstream press coverage, in part because journalists either don’t take religion seriously, fear making mistakes or don’t want to be called Islamophobic, even when defending moderate Muslims.

There is no way to justify this lack of coverage, she said, and in the end, “to ignore religion is ‘anti-journalism.’ ” This “anti-journalism” gauntlet came from published remarks

by Richard Porritt, a former top editor at the London Evening Standard and the British Press Association.

“Many news desks shun real religious news because they believe the subject matter is too tricky to get across properly, and the fear of getting anything

wrong is too great,” he argued.

“But ignoring these stories, or not reporting them fully, is anti-journalism.

“Modern people often imagine that human beings are naturally a-religious and that religious traditions add an optional layer of meaning – and conflict – into human experience,” noted historian Kate Cooper.

“But in the Mediterranean world out of which the Abrahamic religions emerged, the understanding of the human condition was entirely different.

All parties agreed that the sacred was everywhere. ... There was no conception of a world in which the sacred had no place – where it was absent or had been ‘stripped away.’ ” That world, one open to both the sacred and the secular, is the world that far too many journalists struggle to understand, respect and cover, said BBC Religious Affairs Correspondent Caroline Wyatt, who moderated one conference session. It’s time for journalists to be “braver” and to cover this real world.

1. How should South plan the play in seven spades after West leads the heart jack? Trumps are 1-1.

South starts with 12 top tricks: seven spades, three hearts, one diamond and one club. He would prefer not to have to take a finesse.

Declarer should discard a club from his hand at trick one, draw the missing trumps, play a club to his ace (maybe West has a singleton king), cross to dummy with a trump and discard his last two clubs on the pair of heart winners.

Then he ruffs a club in his hand.

If the clubs are 3-2, South plays a trump to dummy, ruffs another club, leads a diamond to dummy’s ace, and pitches his last diamond on the now-high club seven.

If West holds king-fourth of clubs, declarer runs his trumps for a show-up squeeze on West if he also has the diamond king (see the diagram). If East started with kingfourth of clubs, South will have to take the diamond finesse.

2. Suggest an auction. This is difficult, so I accepted anything sensible, even if it ended in six spades. In the given sequence, two no-trump is the Jacoby Game-Forcing Raise, and three hearts shows a singleton or void.

Then there is a lot of control-bidding (cue-bidding). Over five hearts, South, knowing that surely North would have control-bid five clubs (not five hearts) if he had that king, jumps to six spades.

North might well raise with so many extra values – but then again, he might not.
