Dwight, IL. Donald was born May 30, 1928, in Hoopeston, IL to the late Donald and Ellen (nee Erickson) Brown, Sr. Donald was a graduate of Streator High School with the class of 1947.

He attended Illinois State University in Bloomington, IL and the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, IL, in the field of Agriculture, until he was drafted to serve his country with the United States Army, Love Company, 31st Infantry during the Korean War from 19521954. He was the recipient of two bronze medals from the battle of Pork Chop Hill and Old Baldy. Upon his honorable discharge from the army, Donald joined the insurance and investment fields, working for Country Companies for 39 years.

He retired in 1993.

Donald had a great interest in the civic affairs of his community.

He had served on the Village Board of Mazon, was a member and Master Mason of Masonic Lodge #826 in Mazon for 62 years and was a member of the Gardner Lions Club.

He was also a member of the Mazon American Legion, Post #352 and was also a member of their color guard of which he was a flag bearer for their annual Memorial Day service. He was a spiritual man, a member of the Park Street Congregational United Church of

Christ in Mazon and had been a church choir member all of his life.

Donald’s interests were many.

In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting. He also enjoyed golf, his most favorite outing of the year being the Annual Father’s Day outing with his three sons.

Donald was a man of many talents including gardening and playing harmonica. He thoroughly enjoyed feeding the birds in his leisure.

Donald and his wife, Pauline traveled extensively and he collected canes from all over the world during their travels. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline (nee West), whom he married April 21, 1951 in Bloomington, IL; three sons, Dennis Brown of Mazon, Thomas (Molly) Brown of Hudson, IL, and Douglas (Stacy) Brown of Shorewood, IL; three grandchildren, Mary Margaret Brown, Anne Brown, and William Brown; and one sister, Delores (late Kenneth) Durree of St. Paul, MN. Funeral services will be at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd., Braidwood Chapel, Friday, January 23, 2015, at 10:00 a.m.

Rev. Tyler Carrell will officiate.

Interment with military honors will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. The visitation will be Thursday, January 22, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Born: Dec. 29, 1944 Died: Jan. 14, 2015 Joseph “Joe” August Milanowski, 70, of Morris, Illinois, passed away on January 14, 2015, after a battle with cancer. He is the son of the late Joseph and Marion Milanowski, brother to the late Martin Milanowski and father to the late Joseph Milanowski.

Joe was born on December 29, 1944, and was raised on the South Side of Chicago in the Back of the Yards neighborhood where he graduated from Chicago Vocational School (“CVS”). While living in Chicago, Joe developed his life’s playbook of “Good Clean Living” and he referred to this philosophy many times throughout the course of his life. His life lessons brought endless smiles and laughter to all his friends and family.

He moved to Kansas City in 1969 and spent over 30 years there. While in Kansas City, Joe spent most of his professional career in camera sales with Minolta. This led him to the love of his life and best friend, Beverly, who worked at Felix Camera. They married in 1982, and purchased Felix Camera that same year. This was the beginning of a wonderful new journey.

Joseph, to be closer to family and friends. Joe instantly fit right into the Morris community. He found work at Clayton’s Bar and Grill doing what he did best - entertaining others and making new friends.

Joe loved his friendships, cooking, feeding the neighbors, snowmobiling, and traveling with his wife. He started his life with frequent visits to Church on Sundays as a Catholic. He will be sorely missed by friends and family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly (Rozelle); his brother, Robert (Maryann); many nieces and nephews, and other extended family members who all loved him greatly.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 23, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the U. C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris, followed by an informal service sharing stories of Joe’s life. Immediately following the services at the funeral home, a gathering will take place at Clayton’s Tap for a toast to Joe. Please come and share stories with us and revisit your fondest memories of “The Poor Polish Kid from Mid America who was just trying to get by.”

Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – The Grundy County Medical Reserve Corps is a newer organization under the umbrella of the Grundy County Health Department – but it’s one of the most active units in the nation, as far as planning programs and responses.

The Corps’ volunteer coordinator, Kelly Hitt, also serves as volunteer coordinator at the county health department. She has been the most active coordinator of the national group for the past two months and counting.

Health Department Administrator Phil Jass said he’s not surprised.

“She’s my go-to person,” Jass said. “If we need something to get done, she’s there 100 percent. Whether it’s running a health fair or a blood drive or establishing the MRC, she’ll run with it.”

Organizing a local Medical Reserve Corps unit has been a goal for Hitt since she started with the health department in 2009. Grundy’s unit joined with the national unit in 2012.

The MRC is a national network of volunteers, organized locally to improve community health and safety. There are 993 units in its network throughout the country.

According to the Medical Reserve Corps website, www.medicalreservecorps. gov, the units use volunteers to strengthen public health, improve emergency response capabilities and build community resiliency. They prepare for and respond to natural di-

In case of a national or local crisis, Hitt said the local unit will activate to help the community. For instance, if a public health emergency is declared for a communicable disease outbreak or a pandemic, the local team will set up a distribution point to administer vaccines or give out anti-viral or anti-bacterial drugs.

“We will help prevent the spread of illness,” Hitt said.

The Grundy MRC has more than 50 volunteers, including nurses, CNAs, pharmacists, mental health professionals, people knowledgeable about technology and many other fields.

The unit needs more than medical professionals, according to Hitt. It needs a solid base of people who can take notes, work well dealing with other people and help direct people.

The MRC also helps with natural disaster assistance, such as the recent tornadoes in Coal City and Diamond, as well as recent flooding. Its volunteers provided flood cleanup kits for residents under the direction of the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency, as well as pet supplies and pet food during the tornadoes.

The local unit also helps Heartland Blood Center with

blood drives and Grundy County PADS with clothing drives.

Its teams includes Animal, Community Outreach, Planning, Natural Disasters and Nuclear team members. A Surge Capacity Team is in the works.

“These volunteers will be first responders,” Hitt said.

“We still have a great need for volunteers.”

Hitt said in times of emergency, many people want to come forward and help, but it’s important they consider volunteering before an incident happens.

If there is a local or national emergency where every resident must be vaccinated quickly, Hitt said the unit has only 48 hours to give vaccinations to every Grundy County resident. That’s why it’s important to have a large bank of trained people who have already undergone background checks.

“We provide the training for free,” she said. “We have a great group of volunteers and some back-up volunteers who can only serve in times of emergency.”

Local volunteers meet once a month to discuss upcoming projects and for training. New volunteers undergo training, much of it online.

City OKs agreement United Way awards special minigrants to local nonprofit agencies for power savings

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Morris is moving forward with another agreement with Northern Illinois Municipal Electric Collaborative in effort to obtain the lowest rate possible for the city’s power needs.

At the Morris City Council meeting held Tuesday, it approved a recommendation from the Finance and Administration Committee to participate in an agreement with NIMEC to get bids on electricity to power the city’s street lights, lift stations and other municipal needs.

The council unanimously approved the ordinance, which also allows Mayor Richard Kopczick to approve a contract with the lowest bid from an electricity provider for 24 months.

“This is for the city of Morris, not the citizens of Morris [power],” Kopczick said.

The electricity purchasing cooperative will take bids to find the least expensive power supply rate. If ComEd’s rate comes in at the lowest, the city will stick with ComEd. The city has worked with NIMEC for years for power supply rates.

“It’s saved the city tens of thousands over the life we have been doing this,” he told the council.

In April 2011, a referen-

dum passed allowing the city to take bids on the electricity supply for the city’s residential and small commercial use.

Last year was the third year the city took bids to find the least expensive electricity supplier for the community.

The council’s action Tuesday was for city power use, such as for its lift stations, not the community’s use.

Once NIMEC receives ComEd’s rate, it will go for bid, which will be held between Feb. 1 and April 1, depending upon market conditions, according to NIMEC documents. This first bid will be for water and sewer uses, and in June, bids will be taken again for street lighting power, Kopczick said.

In other business, the council also gave the Morris Downtown Development Partnership permission to once again hold a Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in the downtown streets. The tournament this year will be June 57. MDDP hosts the tournament annually.

The 2014 tournament had about 285 teams register and 16 volunteer groups participate.

Every year, MDDP donates to organizations who volunteer for the Gus Macker event.

During the past 12 years, MDDP has given more than $105,000 back to community organizations who have assisted with the tournament.

The businesses that gave out the most stamps were McDonald’s, Walgreens, Jimmy John’s, Casey’s General Store and Dunkin’ Donuts.

The competition began Nov. 29 and ended Jan. 2.

Twenty-eight stamp cards were turned in. Surveyed businesses indicated they liked that the event encouraged customers to shop local.

6 Channahon trustees approve Bluff Road interchange agreement

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Community High School is supporting the Illinois Vision 20/20 initiative to improve public education.

The school board passed a resolution of support at its regular meeting last week.

According to the Vision 20/20 website, illinoisvision2020.org, multiple educa-

tion organizations in the state have partnered to develop a “long-range blueprint for improving public education in Illinois.”

Morris High School Superintendent Pat Halloran said last week the combined effort will look at four pillars – shared accountability, 21st century learning, highly effective educators, and equitable and adequate funding.

“I’m happy to have the

board’s support on the resolution,” Halloran said. “It’s important to show support, it’s important to get behind the effort.”

Vision 20/20 was developed by the Illinois Association of School Administrators in partnership with the Illinois Principals Association, the Illinois Association of School Business Officials, the Illinois Association of School Boards, the Superintendents’ Commission

for the Study of Demographics and Diversity, and the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools. The goal is summarized in its tagline: “Fulfilling the Promise of Public Education.”

State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, who serves on the Senate’s Education Committee as well as its Education Funding Advisory Committee, said she has meetings planned with educators in her district in the

upcoming weeks to discuss Vision 20/20.

“One of our top priorities is funding education,” Rezin said. “I’ve spent the last year and a half on the EFAC committee looking at what other states do and what works and what doesn’t.”

She said she is a big proponent of local schools and that the districts are the experts, so

“Everyone, and especially children, need all of the nutrients in milk to lead healthy, active and hopeful lives,” Julie Yurko, president and CEO of Northern Illinois Food Bank, said in the release.

“We are also excited to add some new partners to the program who were able to purchase refrigeration equipment thanks to this grant,” she said.

The Milk 2 My Plate Program was one of only 24 grants across Iowa and Illinois selected for funding by Telligen Community Initiative, a nonprofit foundation that seeks to improve the health of Iowans, Illinoisans, and their communities.

We Care of Grundy County has applied for a grant with Northern Illinois Food Bank for a walk-in freezer at its new location, We Care Executive Director Denise Gaska said.

“Access to fresh dairy products is an ongoing struggle for

both food pantries and many families in Illinois,” Matt McGarvey, executive director of TCI, said in the news release “As a result, many families go without these important sources of vitamin D. The Milk 2 My Plate Program has proven successful in addressing this need, and we are pleased to support their efforts.”

Through its most recent grant cycle, TCI received more than 230 grant requests from various organizations seeking support for health-focused community projects.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Betty Pierce said when she and her husband Jim first moved to Morris, Jim worked various hands-on jobs, including construction and auto repair.

But his first love was always horses, even though Jim had not grown up on a farm.

So Jim obtained the necessary license and embarked on a 30year career as a farrier, Betty said.

“He was a l w a y s v e r y Jim Pierce gentle with the horses,” Betty said. “He didn’t believe in jerking and jamming and hitting.

A lot of times, he would get a horse that someone else had messed up shoeing. Jim would go and work with the horse and shoe it when other people had given up.”

Betty, who grew up on a Nebraska farm, said Jim, as a boy, often visited a farm near his Missouri home and rode horses. Another friend taught Jim to play guitar by ear and soon Jim was traveling with

“They did shows on the weekend to entertain the farmers out in the country,” Betty said.

Betty attended one of those shows and met Jim. The two dated long-distance for two years before they married.

When they bought land in Morris, they acquired a pinto that was a former cow horse, a quarter horse, a horse that was more Shetland than quarter horse and a pony.

As a farrier, Jim soon acquired a collection of old shoes and scrap metal – porch railings, ash trays, magazine racks and boot scrapers. Jim also fabricated practical items from wood, including custom gunstocks for his friends and a wall holder for the household oil lamp.

“It kept [the lamp] handy so we wouldn’t have to go around in the dark if we needed it,” Betty said, “because it would be hanging there.”

Mostly, Jim was proud of the horse trailer he built. He used it until his last horse died in 2003. Then, Jim kept the trailer in the backyard for storage. He dreamed of repairing it so one of his grandsons could use it for his lawn service business, Betty said.

But that was not to be. Jim retired in 1999. His chronic obstructive pulmonary disease had worsened. He could no longer bend down and lift the horses’ feet.

“After that, he tinkered in his shop with metal,” Betty said. “It got to the point where he had to be on oxygen fulltime. Any exertion was a real effort for him with his breathing.”

Watching Westerns on television helped pass the time, she said. So did sitting at the desk and planning projects.

Some days, Betty felt as if Jim had moved half his shop into the house. But he never turned down a friend that needed his help.

Jim was 79 when he died May 31, 2014.

“He’d repair guns for his friends, little things like springs or triggers that were broken or missing. This much he could do,” Betty said. “He appreciated when the guys would come over and ask if he could do something for them.”

OPINION Quinn’s last days show he isn’t a class act REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder SPRINGFIELD – A familiar voice came booming across my phone line the other day.

“Scott, it’s George Ryan.”

I hadn’t talked to the former governor since he was released from prison. Now that he has paid his debt to society, he wanted to weigh in on a matter of political protocol: Whether Pat Quinn should have shown up for Bruce Rauner’s inauguration.

With the exception of the day Rod Blagojevich was impeached, the outgoing governor – for at least the last 50 years – has always been there to hand the reins over to his successor.

It’s a gracious thing to do.

In a democracy power is handed over peacefully.

In Washington, on inauguration day the outgoing and incoming presidents and their spouses have tea together before the swearing in.

It brings a certain civility to the process.

Ryan said when his successor, Blagojevich, was sworn in he sat through it.

“It was hard. He took hits at me. But I sat there and took it,” he said.

Good for George Ryan.

Former Gov. Dan Walker beat former Gov. Richard Ogilvie. But Ogilvie sat through the inauguration and listened to Walker say, “The free ride is over.”

Ogilvie, a tough former World War II tank commander, sat there and took it.

But on Jan. 12, Pat Quinn was nowhere to be seen.

He stayed home in Chicago and pouted.

OK, maybe he didn’t pout.

But his conduct since Election Day has been pretty bad.

First, he refused to concede the night of the election when it was readily apparent he had lost.

Then he declined to make the traditional congratulatory call to the winner.

And, finally, he blew off the inauguration.

That’s not being a class act – at all.

And yes, I’m aware we had a brutal gubernatorial race.

All elections for governor are brutal.

Mud is slung. Egos are bruised. Candidates cry foul!

“Elections kind of bring out the worst of us and afterward we get back together,” former Gov. Jim Edgar told Illinois News Network. “Inaugurations have a tendency to bring people together.”

Edgar is right.

Unless one of those people doesn’t bother to show up.

This reminded me of a similar story I read in the Gospel of John (8:3-11). The scribes and the Pharisees brought Jesus a woman taken in adultery.

“Master, this woman was taken in adultery,” they said to Jesus, “now the law of Moses commanded us to see that she should be stoned.”

Jesus answered these self-righteous law keepers: “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” Being convicted by their own conscience, went away one by one.

no man accused you?” She said, “No man, Lord?” Jesus said, “Neither do I, go and sin no more.”

Well, Mary Calllahan is being accused of something thought even more wicked and vile. What was it? Failing to staple her 1∏ pages of petitions to the City Clerk’s Office, having only a vinyl-coated paper clip attached and neglecting to number the pages 1 and 2.

Doug Hayse presented 16 pages, more than 400 names, had them the pages numbered, but was accused of not properly fastening them. He used a strong black metal clip. With this testimony, Doug Hayse was accused of not telling the truth.

Many of us have been taught since childhood that we lived in a Christian nation, and I personally

believe we should live by Christian ideals, even in our accusations.

After sitting through these sessions, and not saying one word, I began to wonder: If Jesus sat in their seat, I wonder what he would say to the accusers? I wonder if he would repeat what he said to the religious leaders of the day: “You that are without sin of having not made mistakes in keeping the devout law, cast the first stone.”

What I say may not amount to much. I’m certainly not educated like a lawyer or the Pharisees.

I’m inviting everyone in the Second Ward to write in Doug Hayse.

He will make a fine alderman for you. The spelling must be exact or your vote will be destroyed.

Pirates nip Redskins in overtime

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In a game that was nip-and-tuck all the way, the Ottawa girls basketball team scored a 52-51 overtime win over Morris on Monday night.

Leona Burton led the Redskins (13-6) with 20 points, while Julie Jurasits scored 12, Jessica Ponce had 10 and Mya Shannon nine.

Morris took a 33-31 lead into the fourth quarter, but Ottawa scored the first four points of the period to go ahead 3533. Jurasits answered with a 3-pointer for Morris, and then Burton followed with a basket and a pair of free throws to put the Redskins ahead 40-35. A 3-point play by Jessica Wignes pulled Ottawa to within 40-38 with 4:00 to play.

Wignes hit a 3-pointer to put the Pirates up, 41-40, but Burton countered with one of her own with 1:51 to play, giving the Redskins a 43-41 lead. Jill Wignes then scored for Ottawa to tie the score with just less than 1:30 to go, but neither team scored again in regulation.

In overtime, Ottawa got a three-point play by Jessica Wignes to begin the period and never trailed again. Morris got to within a point at 46-45, 48-47, 50-49 and 52-51 as Ottawa went 5 for 7 from the free throw line in the overtime after shooting 7 of 19 in regulation.

“This was one of those games where a bounce or two goes the other way, and it’s a win for us,” Morris coach Kate Carey said. “We played very well tonight. There have been a few games this year that we won when I have said it wasn’t pretty. If we would have won this one, it would have been pretty.

“Ottawa is a very good team, and for our girls to be right there in it with them the whole way says a lot about them.”

Ponce had four points and Burton two as Ottawa led 7-6 after the first quarter. Both offenses picked things up a big in the second quarter, with Morris just a bit ahead of Ottawa. The Redskins got a pair of 3-pointers by Shannon, the second with just seven seconds

This one is pretty simple.

Over the past four seasons working for the 49ers, Vic Fangio has been the best defensive coordinator in the NFL, and now, he’ll do that job for the Bears.

Obviously, it has helped that the 49ers have had the best defensive players in the NFL the past four seasons – Justin Smith, Patrick Willis, Navorro Bowman, Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks are all Pro Bowlers and Smith, Willis and Bowman perennial defensive MVP candidates.

But Fangio’s skills have gone far beyond talent.

Fangio has run a 3-4 in San Francisco the majority of the time, but no team in the NFL has morphed in and out of 30 and 40 fronts more effectively and more seamlessly than the 49ers.

Again, four All-Pro linebackers and two in Smith and Brooks who can put a hand on the ground and come off the edge at any time made that doable, but it still required great coaching to make it all work.

There is nowhere to connect the dots between Fangio and John Fox other than mutual acquaintances, but it is interesting Fangio was the defensive coordinator in Carolina from 1995 to ’98 well before Fox arrived in 2002.

In today’s deal, look at only the North and South hands. West leads the heart jack against three no-trump.

How should declarer tackle the spade suit?

South starts with six top tricks: one spade, three hearts and two clubs. It is logical to try to rake in four spade winners, losing only one trick in the suit.

The obvious-looking line is to cash the ace, the honor from the shorter side first, then to lead toward dummy.

If West plays an honor, declarer’s problems are over. And if West plays low for a second time, South should call for dummy’s queen. If the suit is 3-3, it is a straight guess, whether West has king-third or jack-third. But playing the queen wins when East started with jack-doubleton. (At this point, there is no winning play if East has king-doubleton; declarer will lose always two spade tricks.)

However, there is a better play.

South should win the first trick on the board and lead the spade queen. If East covers with the king, South wins and his mission is accomplished. If East plays low, so does South. This loses only when West has king-third or king-jack-third.

Swinging parents undermine values taught to their kids Dear Abby: A short time ago, I discovered my parents are “swingers.” I had picked up my mother’s phone to take a picture and an incoming text caught my attention. When I read it and investigated further, I learned the truth.

I don’t mind what they do with their marriage, and I respect their choices. However, my siblings and I were raised in a strict Christian home. My parents taught us the opposite of what they are doing. Now I feel they are hypocrites.

How can they tell me to act a certain way when they don’t practice what they preach? I’m not sure if I

We also try to leave our seats only during halftime or between innings and always apologize for disturbing anyone.

However, I am bothered that we are forced to climb over certain individuals who don’t stand up to let us by.

Sometimes I feel I’m almost bumping into the folks in the row ahead of us.

Is there a rule of etiquette that states that people should stand to allow others to get by? I don’t want to step on toes or spill drinks on anyone. What should I do in
