Rebecca Lynn Fuller, 59, Mazon, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2015, at Morris Hospital.

Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at Hager Memorial Home, Dwight. There will be a private family service following visitation. Rebecca was born on October 8, 1955, to James Oelschlager and L. Jean Bunting.

Becky is survived by her children, Robby Carver, Mazon; Tammy Fuller, Pontiac and Cathy Carver, Woodlawn, TX; her grandchildren, Autumn, Mythys, Nixie, Austin, Blossom, Chason, Braidyn, Tamela and Ryland.

She is also survived by her sisters, Debbie (Jay) Walsh, Kinsman, Beth Wilson, Mazon; her brother, Ken Oelschlager, Fairbury; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, James Oelschlager and L. Jean Bunting.

Becky worked at Caterpillar in Joliet for 21 years. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, her cats and butterflies. She enjoyed reading and watching movies with her grandkids.

Born: April 8, 1923; in Mazon Township, IL Died: Jan. 16, 2015; in Joliet, IL Marjory “Marge” J. Lowery, 91, of Morris, passed away peacefully at Provena-St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet on Friday, January 16, 2015.

Born April 8, 1923, in Mazon Township, IL Marge was the daughter of the late Verl and Elsie (Misener) Wilkinson. She was raised and educated in Mazon Township, attending the Hamilton Country School and the Mazon High School, graduating with the Class of 1941. Marge was valedictorian of Grundy County Schools in 1937 and again of the Mazon High School in 1941.

After graduating from high school, she worked at the Federal Land Bank (now known as Farm Credit) office until her marriage to Clifford A. Lowery on December 23, 1942, in Reno, Nevada. At that time, she moved to Fresno, California to live with her husband who was stationed in Camp Pinedale. While there, she worked as a bookkeeper for J. J. Newberry stores until Cliff was deployed overseas.

In 1957, she was employed by the Grundy County ASCS office in Morris until 1972 when she and her husband moved to Albia, Iowa. While there, she was a real estate broker and certified farm appraiser as a partnership owner of Bluegrass Realty in Chariton, Iowa.

Marge and Clifford retired in 1995

and moved back to Morris, where they built a new home on their son’s farm south of Morris. Her greatest enjoyment was time spent with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, having lunch and playing cards once a month with dear friends, working in her yard, and flowers. Marge was an avid Chicago Bulls fan.

She is survived by one daughter, Jean E. (Larry) Johnson of Dwight; three sons, Robert C. (Diane) Lowery of Knoxville, IA, William W. Lowery of Valley Spring, CA, and Donald V. (Vickie) Lowery of Morris; seven grandchildren, Eric (Jessica) Lowery, Tracy (Jeremy) Hughes, Amy (Joey) Kern, Kimberly (Brandon) Smith, Keith (Jill) Lowery, Greg (Richelle) Lowery and James (Gina) Lowery; nine grandchildren, Cody Kern, Madison and Mylie Hughes, Grace, Luke, Olivia, Harrison, Sydney, and Samantha Lowery, and another great grandchild on the way; a sister-in-law, Doris Lowery; and several nieces and nephews.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2010; two sisters, Virginia (Phillips) and Ruth Margaret; two brothers, Kenneth and Berl “Buster” Wilkinson.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 19, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris. A Celebration of Marjory’s Life will be Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Tyler Carrell of Park Street Congregational Church of Mazon. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

be made to the Betty Sterritt Scholarship Fund.

Area businesses and churches help fundraise to help feed residents

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – As football season comes to a close and fans gear up for Super Bowl parties, We Care of Grundy County asks people to participate in their party– the Souper Bowl of Caring.

“I like the event because it brings awareness,” said Denise Gaska, executive director of We Care. “We indulge so much and have more food than we can eat at our Super Bowl parties, and this reminds people there are others who don’t have that luxury.”

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a national movement that started more than 20 years ago with a prayer from a single youth group, according to Souper Bowl of Caring literature.

They prayed, “Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat.”

Peace Lutheran Church picked up the activity 10 years later as a way to show the youth how to serve others.

“Our youth director Todd Enger started the event at Peace Lutheran,” said Judy Stemen with the church. “This year, the parents and youth group have

Enger has some medical issues and is unable to run the program this year, but that isn’t stopping the youth of the church from doing what they can to help.

“Todd Enger has had such a big role in this,” Gaska said.

“He and the members of Peace Lutheran Church do so much for We Care, he has a heart for those in need.”

We Care has placed containers for the Souper Bowl of Caring event around the county at businesses where they will collect monetary donations to help

fill We Care’s food pantry At Peace Lutheran Church, the youth group will take brown paper bags provided by Ace Hardware to the church’s neighbors where they can be filled with food. The youth group will go back out on Jan. 31, the day before the Super Bowl game, and pick up the bags of food.

They also will be on hand at Peace Lutheran Church to take donations from the public who want to help.

The food drive at the church will be from noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 31 at Peace Lutheran Church, 101 Candlelight Lane in Morris.

They also will host a trivia night Jan. 31 with the proceeds also going to We Care’s Souper Bowl event.

Last year, We Care collected $4,500 from 50 businesses who participated.

No game is official without a trophy however, so the business that raises the most funds will receive the Souper Bowl of Caring trophy for one year.

Gaska encourages people to make sure their favorite business wins by donating early and often.

Serena will be on April ballot for Gardner mayor

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com GARDNER – There will be three candidates for Garnder mayor in April after a ruling favoring mayoral hopeful Michael Serena.

The Gardner Electoral Board ruled Friday in favor of Serena, dismissing an objection made by another candidate for the village’s top spot, Gary Cox. “I’m happy with the decision,” Serena said Friday. “I think I’m the best candidate for the people of Gardner and I won’t disappoint them.”

Cox said Monday he did not want to comment on the matter.

Serena is a sitting Village Board commissioner. Cox is a former commissioner. Donald

Reed also is running for mayor April 7.

The objection filed in December states Serena’s Statement of Economic Interests was not filed with the Grundy County Clerk’s office as required by the end of the filing period.

Because the statement was not filed at the county clerk’s office, the objection states Serena failed to comply with filing requirements and therefore was ineligible to be a mayoral candidate.

The Electoral Board, comprised of Village Board Commissioner Dick Hileman (in place of Mayor Tom Wise, who is ill), City Clerk Becky Pasternak and Commissioner Rob Wolf, did not agree with the complaint.

Serena filed a motion to dismiss the objection because he

already had a Statement of Economic Interests on file for the village of Gardner in the same calendar year as is required, according to the Electoral Board’s written decision.

In Cox’s response to the motion to dismiss, he argued that Serena did not file a receipt proving he filed the statement with the clerk’s office when he filed his petitions. But the board could not consider this, because it was a new argument not raised in the original objection, according to its written decision.

The board granted Serena’s motion for dismissal and his name will appear on the ballot.

“I’m ready to move along,” Serena said. “When the weather gets nicer out, I will go out and talk to the people door-to-door.”

Darren C. Meyjes, also known as Darren C. Durando, 46, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police in Febru-

ary 2014 on a charge of theft.

Three counts of forgery were later added.

Businesses are fighting back, including Grundy Bank, based in Morris. “Customers’ trust is the banking industry’s most valuable asset. Banks will continue to protect customer privacy because our future

depends on it. That’s why the banking industry is committed to continuing its tradition of safeguarding confidential financial information,” explains Vice President Julie Cardot, Grundy Bank.

For example, Grundy Bank established a system to continuously monitor accounts for suspicious activity, notify customers of problems, re-issue replacement credit cards, and train employees to strictly safeguard account information.

Cardot shares how all banking customers may improve their security: “Check your account statements often, enroll in text and mobile alerts warning you of suspicious activity, and notify your bank immediately if you receive an email requesting personal and financial information. Banks would never request sensitive information by email, telephone, or fax.”

The FTC advises customers who suspect fraud to access its website (www.consumer. gov/idtheft) or call 1-877-4384338 to launch an “initial fraud alert.” The website details the steps for documentation to minimize damage.”

Nearly 30 years later, Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes is working toward recognizing Allen by having a portion of Route 47 through Morris named in his honor.

The section of highway that goes over the CSX railway between Benton and High streets will be named after Allen.

“I brought it up to his parents last May and said something needs to be done, but I wasn’t going to do it without the blessing of his mom and dad,” Steffes said. “It’s the right thing to do, no ifs, ands or buts about it.”

Allen is the son of Ken Allen of Coal City and Judy Steffes of Sheldon. He was married to his wife Donna and had a son, Kenneth James Allen, when he was killed in the fire.

Steffes approached state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, with the memorial idea and Anthony jumped on board to help.

Steffes said there is a statue in Allen’s honor at Chapin Park, but he believes renaming this particular section of Route 47 the Firefighter James Allen Memorial Highway will help close a chapter and properly memorialize him.

fice for assistance, he was in a room with a We Care employee who was called out of the office, briefly leaving Meyjes alone.

When the employee returned, it was noticed the checks were missing from The Salvation Army booklet, Gaska has previously said. The Salvation Army was immediately notified, but because of the format of the checks, The Salvation Army did not believe the checks could be used.

It later called We Care when it was discovered the checks had been deposited.

Through a police investigation, it was discovered about $3,000 in checks were deposited into an account of Meyjes’s at Morris Community Credit Union, according to court documents.

ROCHELLE – The Morris boys basketball team came out hot, and didn’t cool down much in a 67-55 Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover win over Rochelle on Saturday night.

In fact, the hot shooting is nothing new for the Redskins, who shot 50 percent or higher from 3-point range for the fourth straight game. Morris was 9 of 16 against Geneseo, 14 of 22 against Pontiac, 11 of 21 against DeKalb and 9 of 18 against Rochelle.

Austin Patterson led Morris (12-5, 3-2) with 23 points, while Evan Bjelland had 14 points and six assists, Jake Walker scored 12 points and Griffin Sobol collected eight points and eight rebounds.

“We finished a grinding week, with three games, two on the road and one against a very tough DeKalb team at home,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “To come out of it 2-1, and one shot from 3-0, is acceptable. Obviously, the buzzer loss to DeKalb still stings, but we handled business on the road.

“And now, we have to do it again – with games against LaSalle-Peru on Tuesday, at Sycamore on Friday and home against Sterling on Saturday.

It doesn’t get easier. Every game remaining on our regular-season schedule is a conference game, and only four of them are at home. It’s a bit odd that we are 2-0 in road conference games and 1-2 at home. We normally play well at home. Hopefully the road conference record is reflective of some toughness on our part, and that continues.”

In girls action Saturday, the Redskins raced to a 20-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and coasted to a 62-23 win.

If you like Da Bears, you’ll like Fox BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush LAKE FOREST – The best thing about John Fox being the new coach of the Bears is 10 seconds into his introductory news conference Monday, it was clear that he is the kind of guy you’d love to hang out with at the corner tavern and knock a few back, gals and guys invited.

Not once in nine years with Lovie Smith or two seasons with Marc Trestman did I ever get the impression that we might enjoy hanging out.

Lovie wasn’t a bad guy, but he was never truly at ease with the media or fans, and things got progressively worse as his coaching tenure wore on.

Personally, I really like Trestman and former general manager Phil Emery, probably in part because of their awkwardness, and awkward is the only way one can objectively describe their public personas.

Why does this matter?

They aren’t a playoff team that was general managed and coached to a 5-11 record. They are a 5-11 team with overrated talent in several areas, and GM Ryan Pace and Fox now have to set about the difficult task of fixing that.

There will be potholes, molehills and possibly even a mountain or two to climb along the way.

Over the past decade when things got tough, Bears fans got angry, and Smith and Trestman usually just made things worse.

Most of the time Smith and Trestman spent at the podium, you couldn’t escape the feeling they would have much rather been at the dentist.

Everything about Fox made sense – on paper – to be the 15th head coach in franchise history, but he needed to connect with the new – and young – GM, and the two hit it off, thanks in part to Fox’s “youthful” attitude. You could even tell from the handshake-hug the two shared when Pace introduced Fox to the Chicago media.

“I look at John Fox as being my age,” Pace said Monday.

Pace first wanted to point out that Fox was a winner when discussing his traits, but then focused on the way their personalities meshed, the start of what the Bears hope will be a budding friendship – or as the youth say, “bromance” – to lead the franchise.

“He’s intelligent, guys want to play hard for him, discipline,” Pace said. “But then there’s specific things with our personalties. Hey, I want to have high energy, let’s have fun, let’s win games, let’s be positive. Hey, I love that about John Fox.”

It’s the team that can keep its lows from being too low that are come out on top.

Count Joliet West’s girls squad as that team Saturday, as the Tigers won the 14-team Morris Charles Butterfield Memorial Invitational with a six-game total of 6,096. West Aurora (6,073) finished second, followed by Oswego East (6,005), Oswego (5,940), Minooka (5,824), Morris (5,729), Plainfield South (5,456), LaSalle-Peru (5,440), Lincoln-Way West (5,301), Richelle (5,210), Plainfield East (4,974), Streator (4,951), Romeoville (4,876) and Joliet Central (4,039).

West’s Gracie Plese was the individual champion, finishing with a six-game total of 1,356, an average of 226 a game. Her best game was 285, but that was good for second on the day’s high game list.

Minooka’s Lexi Jones, who finished second overall, had the day’s highest game with 289. She rolled 1,322 for six games.

Joliet West’s Taylor Bailey finished fourth overall with a 1,301, while teammate Sarah Heffron rolled 1,206. Kayla Kurowski rolled 1,121 for the Tigers, while Melissa March rolled 1,112.

OPINION Most think common ground will be hard to find in Springfield A solid majority of Illinoisans wants newly inaugurated Gov. Bruce Rauner to find common ground with the Democratic legislative majority rather than be confrontational, a new poll finds. However, most aren’t confident that the state’s leaders can avoid gridlock and a majority believes the Democrats will be to blame.

“Do you think Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner should try to solve the state’s problems by working to find common ground with the Democratic-controlled Legislature, or should he take a more confrontational approach with the Democrats in trying to solve this state’s many problems?”

1,026 registered voters were asked Jan. 15 by We Ask America.

Considering Illinois’ sorry history and the gridlock caused by divided government in our nation’s capital, just 31 percent of Illinoisans were confident that gridlock cold be avoided, while 54 percent said they were not confident. The most “confident” group was Republicans, but even they were outnumbered 46-39 by Republicans who said they weren’t confident.

I think you might get a higher confidence level for compromise at the Statehouse, particularly among folks who have experienced progress under divided government in the past.

Divided government rarely accomplishes sweeping changes, mainly because the parties are at odds on some issues, particularly social issues. But, so far at least, Springfield has a much better track record than Washington, D.C., which has a structural bias toward do-nothingness.

More specifically, 30 percent said they thought House Speaker Michael Madigan would be to blame, 3 percent said Senate President John Cullerton would likely be the problem and 19 percent said it would be Madigan and Cullerton together.

The Democratic legislative leaders spent down their reserves during last year’s campaign, and ended 2014 with a combined total of $2.8 million in their respective campaign bank accounts.

And for the first time in memory, the Illinois Republican Party ended a year with more than twice as much cash on hand than Madigan’s Democratic Party of Illinois: $566K for the ILGOP and $215K for DPI. That advantage is mostly because of contributions from Rauner himself.

If you were wondering why people like me believe Madigan will hold his fire for a while, all you have to do is look at the results from the above two polls and that cash disadvantage. Madigan knows he and his party will be the fall guy in any war.

Rauner will have to take the first shot – and maybe the second and third.

And Madigan had better go out there and raise some more money.

Dental checkups necessary even for faithful flossers Dear Doctor K: I take good care of my teeth, brushing and flossing regularly. Do I still need to have regular dental checkups?

Dear Reader: Even if you brush your teeth three times a day and floss daily, regular checkups with a dental professional are a must. For most people, two checkups a year are enough. That’s what I have. Routine visits usually include a professional cleaning, an exam and possibly X-rays.

Professional cleaning rids your teeth of tartar. This thick stuff can build up in places that are hard to reach with a toothbrush. Or in places that are easy to reach with a toothbrush – if you don’t

If tartar is not removed, it can lead to cavities and tooth decay. During the cleaning, the dentist or hygienist might use a small metal instrument with a bladelike end to scrape off tartar above and below the gum line. He or she may also use an ultrasonic vibrating device to shake loose plaque and tartar. The dentist or hygienist will polish your teeth with a lightly abrasive paste and finish up with a flossing.

After your teeth are clean, your dentist will examine

them, looking for early signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer or other dental problems and take appropriate action. He or she will look for signs of decay, using a metal probe and a small mirror with an angled handle. The dentist will check for gum disease by examining your gums for swelling and redness and by measuring the spaces between the teeth and the gums.

Your dentist will test how your upper and lower teeth come together. He or she will look for evidence of tooth grinding, or problems with the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. The dentist will also check for signs of infection and oral cancer. Finally, your dentist

will look for clues as to whether problems in your mouth are actually symptoms of other diseases in the body.

Virtually everyone who visits the dentist will have X-rays taken at some point.

Teeth, bones, fillings and restorations appear lighter because they block more of the X-rays than soft tissue.

Decayed or swollen, pus-filled areas around teeth appear darker than healthy teeth.

X-rays are valuable for uncovering problems in places that can’t easily be seen – cavities inside and between the teeth, for example. They can also show wisdom teeth that have failed to come through the gum and bone deterioration below the gum line.

For me, regular cleaning of the teeth has almost always been a pleasant experience – with one notable exception.

The dental hygienist had escaped from Communist Czechoslovakia. She liked to talk, and, given the circumstances, I couldn’t say much in reply.

That day, she was talking about all of the reasons she hated the Communists. With each new reason, she cleaned the teeth by the gum line a little harder. I blame the Czech Communists for making my mouth sore.
