Heartland Bank names recipient of Heart of our Community Award MORRIS DAILY HERALD MINOOKA – Heartland Bank and Trust Company in Minooka presented their 2014 Heart of our Community award to Fred Ban at the November Chamber Business After Hours.

This award was established to recognize local Minooka residents who have stood out with their time and talent, according to a news release from the bank.

The Heart of Our Community award was presented by Terri Turney, retail manager for Heartland Bank in Minooka.

Heartland Bank recognizes its responsibility extends beyond providing financial services to the communities it serves.

“We strongly believe the ongoing success of a community involves good corporate citizenship and making a difference in the lives of others,” Turney said in the release. This award was designed to recognize local residents who have done something extraordinary, touched someone by lending a helping hand or going above and beyond.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Three area bowlers took home gold medals in December for their performance in the Illinois Special Olympics bowling competition.

“It felt pretty awesome,” Aaron Eucker of Morris said of his win in the doubles competition held in Peoria, where he competed with girlfriend Becky Shark of Morris.

He said the pair practice with the Special Connections of Grundy County team every other week, but he and Shark go to Echo Lanes in Morris and practice together more often.

This is the second time Shark has brought home a gold medal in the couples division. The first time was two years ago, when she competed with a friend.

“It felt awesome to win a gold medal with my boyfriend,” she said.

Shark said the hardest part about competing is getting to a tournament and seeing others

who are better than you and being intimidated by them.

Special Connections Executive Director Kelly Thompson said the competitions are divided into different categories, including singles, doubles or teams, both with and without

ramps.

Special Connections is a local organization providing social activities and other support services for people with disabilities and their families in and around Grundy County.

Christina Kluzek of Seneca has bowled for four years and has received both bronze and silver medals previously. This year, she brought home the gold.

Kluzek competed in the singles ramp bowling competition, where she uses a ramp as an assisting device to get her ball down the lane.

Her mother, Sue Kluzek, said her daughter’s teachers and classmates at Seneca Grade School gave her a send off she won’t soon forget.

They arranged a pep assembly where students showed off their posters encouraging her,

and cheerleaders created a special bowling cheer for Christina.

“It was the coolest thing,” Sue Kluzek said. “Her teacher said they do pep assemblies for every other kid who goes to state, so they wanted to do one for her.”

Christina Kluzek has a disability that affects her vision and she is unable to see the bowling pins at the end of the alley. So she bowls with an assistant, who places her ramp where Christina Kluzek tells her to.

“The assistant will tell her there are two pins on the right and she has to tell her where she wants the assistant to point the ramp,” Sue Kluzek said.

All three champions are excited to go back again next year and try their hand at winning another gold medal.

‘Dueling Tonys’ show returns to Morris

DeBlois sings in 11 languages, plays 23 instruments and knows more than 8,000 songs.

“Tony DeBlois is a man who is blind and autistic who plays a musical instrument like nothing you’ve ever seen before,” said Jennifer Price, president of Special Connections in Grundy County and director of Trinity Services of North Central Illinois.

This year marks the fourth year that DeBlois, an international performer, has come to the area to put on the fundraising show.

Last year, there were two shows offered, one with Tony DeBlois as a soloist and one with Tony Kidonakis, a local musician.

Kidonakis said the event is a fun, family-oriented performance where all ages can en-

“The entire evening, people can write down song titles, artist names, and special dedications,” Kidonakis said in an email. “Tony DeBlois can play just about anything imaginable, and his gifts are truly a miracle to witness.”

Operation St. Nick program helps veteran families

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Kevin Akre spent four years in the United States Army before leaving the military and moving to Morris with his wife and children.

This Christmas his family received a Christmas wish through Operation St. Nick’s 12 Days of Christmas Giving.

“It’s a slow time of year for me at work,” Akre said. “They made sure my kids got a good Christmas.”

Akre works as a truck technician, and his wife went from a full-time job to a part-time job, due to medical issues with her back. She recently has resumed working full-time, but not in time to create the magical Christmas morning they wanted for their children.

Akre’s son, who was 3 months old when he left for Iraq, is now 5 years old and was treated to a morning of opening all the Lego’s he wanted thanks to the Operation St. Nick program.

His 3-year-old daughter received Barbies, coloring books and “Frozen” toys much to her delight.

“Santa was very good to them,” Akre said.

He doesn’t like to ask for help, but when his wife saw that Operation St. Nick was asking for applications from veterans, she decided to apply.

In addition to presents for the children, some of their bills were paid and their January rent was taken care of as well.

“I don’t like to ask for help,” Akre said. “But it was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders, and it will help me get on track for next Christmas.”

This was Operation St. Nick’s fourth year of assisting military families and veterans who have been honorably discharged with a dream Christmas wish, spending up to $2,500 on each of the 12 families it helped. The program is sponsored in part by the Morris Daily Herald.

This year’s program helped families from Morris, Minooka, Coal City and Gardner, some of whom are still deployed and others who are veterans.

Joe Schmitz, president of Operation St. Nick said all but one of the 12 families had children. One family helped had eight children and another seven. The one thing they had in common was wanting to have a good Christmas for their kids.

The one person with no children is a disabled military veteran who is unable to work due to injuries he sustained while in the service.

Schmitz said the family with seven children was a former Marine who was recently on short term disability, and when he was released to return to work he was laid off.

“This family’s rent for January was paid, the children all received gifts totaling $1,400, a computer and food to carry them over the Christmas holidays and into the new year,” Schmitz said.

He said the program is a way to say “thank you” for their service to the country.

“It is indeed a pleasure for all of us at St. Nick to make these families Christmas dreams come true,” Schmitz said. “None of these military families dreamed of having a Christmas like this. It was a wonderful feeling thanking them for their service to our country and asking them how

we could make their Christmas special for them.”

This year, St. Nick had $30,000 available for the 12 grants at $2,500 each. Money for the program is set aside throughout the year and is raised through community auctions, fundraisers and individual donations.

Minooka projects for 2015 will improve traffic, attract growth

There also are ravines on both sides of the road, making it hard for residents to walk to area subdivisions, he said.

The plan is to connect the McEvilly Road bike path from Lions Park to the south side of the DuPage River, where it will meet the existing path in Channahon. It’s about a half-mile walking path that will enable residents from nearby subdivisions to access schools and the downtown area through a safe walking path, Duffy said.

Estimated project cost is $900,000, Duffy said. The village obtained more than $600,000 in Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program funds. Both Grundy and Will counties committed $100,000 for the project, too.

Duffy anticipates the project beginning spring 2015.

“This is really going to help us out, this bike path.

It’s nice the two counties [Grundy and Will] has a partnership that’s going to help in the future all around,” Brennan said.

MINOOKA – Village officials in Minooka plan to tackle several projects this year that they say will improve traffic and make residents safer.

Village Administrator Dan Duffy said the village will expand the Ridge Road rail overpass and create a multi-use bike path on McEvilly Road. While both will aid residents navigating certain areas of Minooka, residents also can look forward to a new hotel coming to the village.

Duffy said the village will work with Canadian National and Grundy County to take down and replace the Ridge Road rail overpass with a new, wider span overpass that will allow for the road’s expansion.

“What it does is, that will alleviate the bottleneck on Ridge Road, because currently it’s just a two-lane road going underneath the overpass,” he said.

The project costs about $7 million, Duffy said. It is expected to take off next spring.

Grundy County received a $4 million grant from the Illinois Commerce Commission for the project, Duffy said. Minooka also received a roughly $2 million grant from the Will County Governmental League toward the work.

interchange, Duffy said. Construction began last fall. Duffy hopes final construction will spur commercial growth not seen since before the Great Recession.

Brennan said the hotel should provide more tax dollars and bring in more businesses.

“I think what’s going to happen there is they’re going to fill those lots [by the hotel] and it’s going to really help us out,” he said.

More warehouses – including one from IKEA – are expected to come to the village next year as well, Brennan said. He said that should prove good for taxes.

Another mayoral candidate, Gary Cox, filed the objection. Tuesday was the last day to file objections against petitions.

Serena is a Gardner commissioner.

The objection filed states Serena’s Statement of Economic Interests was not filed with the county clerk’s office as required by the end of the filing period, according to the objection.

Because it was not filed at

the Grundy County Clerk’s office, the objection states Serena failed to comply with requirements and is ineligible to be a candidate for mayor in the April 7 election, according to the objection.

In the objection, Cox asks the Electoral Board to not print Serena’s name on the ballot.

Serena, Cox and Donald Reed all filed petitions to run for mayor in Gardner, according to the village. There also are four commissioner seats up for election.

Incumbents Rob Wolf, Dick Hileman and Terry Jensen have all turned in petitions to keep seats. Four others have also petitioned for the board: former mayor Gerry Vonqualen, James Riley, Ed Fellows and Patty Parks.

BEARS rode with Fran in the limo to the cemetery that New Year’s Eve day.

I always knew Joel was well-connected, but I had no idea how well-connected until I got out of that limo.

We were somewhere off the beaten path in Jersey, and the ride had taken forever.

It was a graveside funeral and there were maybe a dozen to 15 or 16 friends and relatives there. As I walked with Fran to the grave I noticed four men standing together about 30 feet or so back from the gravesite and the rest of the mourners.

As I focused on them, I realized it was Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli from the New England Patriots, Joel Bussert, director of player personnel for the NFL, and Accorsi.

Until that moment they had all been voices on the phone, so I made my way over to

I could give you five or six hours on what that meeting and the next half hour or so were like, but the point here is Accorsi and the Bears.

The Giants were a playoff team that year, Accorsi their GM, and the following weekend they’d lose a legendary wild-card game, 39-38, to the 49ers in Candlestick Park. But there was Accorsi at a Jewish cemetery out in the middle of nowhere to pay his respects to a man no one realized he knew.

We never became close, but we did stay in touch for several years after that discussing appropriate memorials for

Joel, talking a little football mainly because Accorsi wanted to do what he could for Pro Football Weekly because it had meant so much to Joel.

Accorsi served two year as general manager of the Baltimore Colts (1982 to ’83), eight years as executive vice president and GM of the Cleveland Browns (1985 to ’92) and 10 years as GM of the Giants (1998 to 2007).

He led the Browns to five playoff appearances and three AFC title games, and in 1991 Accorsi hired the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, Bill Belichick, as his next head coach.

With the Giants, Accorsi led the team to four playoffs and one Super Bowl that they lost to the Ravens. They hired Tom Coughlin, and the team he built won the Super Bowl the year after he retired.

Not only is he uniquely

qualified to find an excellent GM and head coach for the Bears, he is a special individual who treats everyone with respect and is as loyal and honorable as anyone you will ever meet.

All of his GM jobs were with family ownership groups – the Irsays, Modells and Maras – so he is perfectly suited to understand the McCaskey family dynamic and work with it effectively.

The only way this relationship is likely to fail is if George McCaskey allows Ted Phillips to make the final recommendations and decisions, or if he insists on doing it himself.

The Bears will succeed with these hires if Accorsi is allowed to make it happen.

After the chaos of this season, next Bears GM will have hands full

By ADAM L. JAHNS ajahns@suntimes.com Phil Emery tried to rebuild, while winning right now. It was an arduous position from the beginning after Jerry Angelo’s run as Bears general manager.

After Emery traded offensive lineman Gabe Carimi, the Bears were without one firstround pick from the Angelo era. Emery relied on free agency and big deals to strengthen the Bears’ weak spots.

So what does the next Bears GM have to work on after Emery? “[Our talent is] not where we want to be,” president Ted Phillips said when asked about the Bears’ talent gap in the NFC North. “It’s not where we want to be or we wouldn’t be here [firing Emery and coach Marc Trestman].

“So we’re expecting that gap, however large it is – it’s hard to define that – to close and close rapidly.”

The New York Jets and the

Bears are the only two teams looking for GMs, and candidates will evaluate the Bears’ situation as much as the Bears’ evaluate them. The cupboard at Halas Hall isn’t empty, but tough decisions loom.

Figuring what do to with quarterback Jay Cutler and receiver Brandon Marshall, the leaders of the Emery/Trestman era, should be No. 1.

Cutler has some support in the locker room, but the best decision may be trying to move him and what’s left of

his hefty contract (he’s already guaranteed $15.5 for 2015) out.

Marshall’s production declined because of injuries, but he also generated negative attention for the Bears for the first time this season. Cutting Marshall would cost the Bears more than $13 million.

The Bears’ next GM will have to work through two major contract situations with receiver Alshon Jeffery and running back Matt Forte entering the final years of their deals.

Jeffery wasn’t the high-

light-reel machine this season he was in 2013, but he still made 85 catches for 1,113 yards and 10 touchdowns. He’s due a big payday after his rookie contract, but questions remain whether he can be a true No. 1.

Forte has a cap hit of $9.2 million in 2015, the final year of a four-year, $30.4 million contract. He’s a fitness freak and just became the second running back in NFL history to have 1,000 yards rushing and 100 receptions in one season.

We had spoken a few times on the telephone, but I first met Ernie Accorsi in person in a cemetery somewhere in Saddlebrook, New Jersey.

It was New Year’s Eve, 2002, two days after the death of Joel Buchsbaum on the morning of the final Sunday of the NFL regular season.

Joel is a legend in the industry, the greatest independent talent evaluator ever, and was a trusted resource to scores of NFL executives until his untimely passing.

Joel did all of his work over 24 years at Pro Football Weekly. He was an only child, a true eccentric and a bit of a recluse who left only his mother, Fran, behind.

In addition to a valued co-worker, Joel was like a brother to me, and Fran had almost no one else, a cousin or three, so I flew to the Buchsbaum home in Brooklyn and

After losing by 13-points to Mendota on Monday in the Plano Christmas Classic semifinals, the seniors on the Morris boys basketball team took charge Tuesday night and led the Redskins to a 68-61 win over Aurora Christian in the third-place game.

Jake Walker had the hot hand early, scoring Morris’ first 10 points. He finished the quarter with 13, and fellow senior Evan Bjelland came off the bench to score the other five as the Redskins and Eagles were tied at 18 after the first eight minutes.

“Without Jake in the first quarter, we might have been looking at a pretty big deficit and had that ‘Here we go again’ mindset,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “But our three senior guards (Walker, Bjelland and Austin Patterson) all did a real good job tonight.”

Walker finished with a game-high 23 points, while Patterson, held scoreless in the first quarter, finished with 19. Bjelland chipped in with 15.

The Redskins (8-4) led 33-32 at halftime, and scored the fist five points of the second half on a steal and layup by senior Griffin Sobol and a 3-pointer

by Bjelland. After a Walker 3-pointer gave Morris a 41-34 lead, Aurora Christian (8-3)

went on a 7-0 run to tie the score. Morris countered with a 7-0 spurt of its own as Walker and Bjelland each scored from the lane and Patterson drained a 3-pointer. Aurora Christian battled back, however, and the Redskins eventually led 52-51 at the end of the third.

Morris then scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter and held a 60-51 lead with 3:24 to play. Aurora Christian got no closer than five points

the rest of the way. Down the stretch, Patterson, Bjelland and Walker each made clutch free throws to keep the Eagles at bay.

“After as poorly as we played against Mendota, our guys came back less than 24 hours later and responded well,” Blumberg said. “We did a good job on the boards and only gave them one shot most of the night.”

Patterson finished with a team-high nine rebounds, while Walker had five. Bjelland led the Redskins, who play Tuesday at home against Coal City, with four assists.

“Sometimes I think we fo-

cus on the mental aspect too much, but I think it was good that we hit some shots early,” Blumberg said. “That kept us from getting down, and it’s not easy to play from behind against a team like Aurora Christian.

“I really thought Evan Bjelland responded well off the bench. He sparked us a bit when he came in.

“On the last day of a tournament like this, our kids showed great effort and toughness. We rebounded well, we took charges and were on the floor after loose balls. This was a good tournament for us.”

They led the Indians 11-4 after a Sean Baker 3-pointer with just more than two minutes to play in the period. Over the course of the next 17 minutes, the Irish hit exactly one field goal, as Sandwich cruised. It was a difficult loss to stomach for Seneca coach Russ Witte.

Looking forward to a new year There’s something about seeing Jan. 1 on the calendar.

It’s a new year, a chance for a fresh start. And there’s a sense of hope that the next 360-plus days will be filled with promise of only good things to come.

It’s natural, then, to have resolutions for the new year. Personal goals often revolve around getting physically fit, managing debt or going back to school.

With that in mind, here are some suggested larger, community-wide resolutions we have for 2015.

We hope people will make time in the coming year to volunteer. There are many local nonprofits and organizations that could use assistance and could not survive without volunteer help. It doesn’t take much time to make a difference.

We hope people pay attention to their health. From eating better to exercising regularly, everyone benefits from staying healthy. This wish extends to healthy habits such as driving safe – put down your phones when you get behind the wheel.

We’ve seen enough crashes this past year to last us a while.

With local offices on the April ballot, we hope our readers educate themselves about who is running and what they stand for. We hope candidates make themselves available to talk about what they want to accomplish if elected. And we hope all registered voters head to the ballot box in April.

With a new governor coming into office, we hope state lawmakers use the opportunity to make changes that actually will lift the state out of its dire financial mess. It won’t be easy, but the changes needed to fix the state’s fiscal quagmire are going to require some pain.

And most of all, we hope everyone – whether it be parents and children, spouses or citizens and those they elect to office – makes a commitment to listen to each other. All that seems to go on anymore, both in politics and regular social circles, is people yelling at one another, convinced they’re right and anyone who doesn’t see things the exact same way is wrong.

Life shouldn’t be about winning or being right, but about understanding and living with one another.

Happy new year, and best wishes for a wonderful 2015.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Christmas a call to action It’s not cheery, but among the most jarring things I read in the run-up to Christmas comes from historian Stanley Weintraub, who has written about Christmas during wartime more than once.

His recounting of the Christmas Truce of 1914 is a testament to the goodness in the heart of man, even when seeped in a culture of evil.

Weintraub’s latest is “A Christmas Far from Home: An Epic Tale of Courage and Survival during the Korean War.” Gen. Douglas MacArthur had told troops they would be home for Christmas. That wouldn’t happen. And in the book, about a war he himself served in, Weintraub writes about American soldiers who spent their holiday in a prisoner of war camp.

On Christmas Eve, the soldiers’ captors decorated the camp as an indoctrination technique. Brainwashing was well underway by the time they were greeted with a “Merry Christmas” sign and a placard underneath that read, “If it were not for the Wall Street Imperialists, you would be home with your families on this Christmas night.” Soldiers were forced to denigrate their home country and swear allegiance to their captors.

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez faith in the face of death, remind us that martyrdom is not the stuff of history. An elderly woman with breast cancer named Ghazala comes to mind. Last year, she and a group of fellow sick and disabled Iraqi Christians defied their tormenters and told them they’d rather die than surrender their faith.

And although most choices we are faced with in our lives are not life-and-death, so many of them are about integrity and whether we really are who we claim to be. You can’t celebrate Christmas authentically without keeping this in mind.

Johnnie Moore, who wrote “Dirty God: Jesus in the Trenches,” went to Iraq this year and recently wrote about the mass killing of Christians that is happening there. “I am amazed, inspired, and convicted by the commitment to Jesus Christ shared by all these displaced Christians,” he tells me. He was most struck there by the prevalence of the cross.

“Christians had crosses tattooed on their arms, placed at the entrance to their tents, adorned in lights on top of their buildings. One Christian fam-

ily even snuck back into their village – which had been ransacked by ISIS – to put the cross back on their church. ... They are willing to die for what most Christians are barely willing to live for.”

Moore works for TV producer Mark Burnett, the creator of “Survivor,” among other things. Burnett and his wife, Roma Downey, wellknown for her role in “Touched by an Angel,” launched an effort to raise $25 million to help some of the estimated 10,000 Iraqi Christians who fled their homes and remain displaced.

Stanley Weintraub wrote a previous book about what George Washington thought was his farewell to public life, when he retired as commander of the Revolutionary Army in 1783. In his address at the time, Washington impressed upon his victorious countrymen that their work needed to continue in lives of virtue and civil service to a new republic. We need that same spirit of service today. And it’s what the Christ child celebrated at Christmas calls his people to.

The winner of the Richard Freeman Junior Deal of the Year award from the International Bridge Press Association last October was Bob Donkersloot, a 19-year-old from the Netherlands.

Donkersloot (South) was in four spades. After West led the diamond nine, what did declarer do?

In the auction, North’s four-club rebid showed four-card spade support, at least game-going values and some sort of club control.

Donkersloot realized that he needed the trump finesse to work and that the opening lead had to be a singleton.

(West would have led the jack or ace if he held a doubleton.) So there was a risk that East would take dummy’s diamond queen with his ace and give his partner a diamond ruff. Then a heart shift through dummy’s king, with East holding the ace, would give the defenders the first four tricks. Was there any way to divert the apparent destiny of the contract?

Donkersloot found a fantastic play at trick one -- he called for a low diamond from the dummy.

East automatically won with his jack and cashed the diamond ace.

West, not smelling a rodent, did not ruff and shift to a heart. And then the contract could not be defeated. South won East’s club switch in the dummy, discarded a heart on the second high club and conceded a heart. A moment later, declarer ruffed a heart in his hand, took the trump finesse, drew trumps and claimed.

Now to come clean. This clever play proved unnecessary at the table because West held the heart ace. The contract was unbeatable. But that does not detract from Donkersloot’s imaginative play.

Depression may be caused by several medical conditions Dear Doctor K: I’ve been feeling down and moody lately, but nothing out of the ordinary has happened in my life.

And I’ve always been a happy and positive person. Could something other than depression be affecting my mood?

Dear Reader: Depression is a common problem, and it often is not recognized by either the person suffering from it or that person’s doctor. In fact, I think undiagnosed and untreated depression is one of the most important health problems in the developed nations. It generates enormous emotional suffering – on the part of the depressed person, and that person’s family, friends and co-workers. It also leads to lost productivity.

But while under-diagnosed depression is a big problem,

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff “over-diagnosed” depression also is a problem. Mood disturbances can be caused by a variety of medical conditions or medications. Indeed, this may be true in up to 15 percent of all cases of depressed mood.

When the medical condition is treated, or the medication stopped, the mood disturbance goes away. Yet doctors sometimes misdiagnose such cases as “depression.”

Among the best-known medical conditions that can cause a depressed mood is a thyroid hormone imbalance.

Too little thyroid hormone, called hypothyroidism, often

leads to depression-like symptoms. Nutritional deficiencies, such as a lack of vitamin B12, can mimic depression. Heart disease has also been linked to depression.

The following medical conditions also are associated with mood disorders: • multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease; • stroke; • certain hormone deficiencies, such as Addison’s disease; • certain immune system diseases, such as lupus; • some viruses and other infections, such as mononucleosis, hepatitis and HIV; • cancer.

Sometimes, it’s hard to tell which came first, the medical condition or the

mood changes. Each of the above conditions can cause a depressed mood, and the stress of a serious illness can trigger depression.

A doctor can help tease out whether mood changes occurred on their own, were caused by a medical illness or were the result of the medical illness. To do so, he or she will consider your medical history and the results of a physical exam and other tests.

If depression springs from an underlying medical problem, the mood changes should disappear after the medical condition is treated.

But in many cases, though the episode may be triggered by the medical illness, the depression becomes an independent problem. Therefore, treatment must also address the depres-

sion directly.

Medications can also cause a depressed mood by directly impacting brain circuits that regulate mood. On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a detailed list of the medicines that most often affect a person’s mood.

Your doctor can help sort out whether a new medication, a change in dose or drug interactions might be causing your problems. Or whether, like millions of other people, you are suffering from depression.
