Grundy County • Jason R. Casillas, 33, of Minooka, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Tuesday on a warrant charge of obstructing justice. He was given a Feb. 12 court date.

• Nikolas A. Parrish, 19, of Coal City, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Tuesday on a failure-to-appear warrant on a charge of consumption of alcohol by a minor. He was given a Feb. 2 court date.

• Edward Nuttall, 19, of Chicago, was arrested by Grundy

County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Wednesday on a Grundy County warrant charge of forgery.

• Shanetria S. Brand, 31, of Joliet, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies Wednesday on a Grundy County failure-to-appear warrant on a charge of driving under the influence. She was given a March 24 court date.

• Tyler S. Ness, 23, of Marseilles, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Wednesday on a warrant and a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He also was cited for possession of cannabis, less than 2.5 grams, and drug equipment.

State police • Victor M. Velasquez, 28, was arrested by Illinois State Police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Tuesday on a charge of cannabis trafficking.

Morris • Kevin R. Thomas, 32, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Tuesday on charges of domestic battery and interfering with a report of domestic violence.

• Richard W. Walker, 24, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police on Tuesday on a charge of criminal damage to property. He posted bond and was released with a Feb. 23 court date.

James William Hall, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife, sister Jane and close friends at the VA hospital in Salisbury, NC on January 2, 2015.

Jim is survived by his wife, Lucy E. Hall; sisters, Jane West, Jacquelyn Barnett, Beverly Severson; sons, Jason Hall, Jeff Nussbaum, Joe Nussbaum, John Nussbaum, Rosemary Parkinson.

Jim was full of adventure and felt closest to God in the outdoors. He joined the University Seventh Day Adventist Church in 2006 and was an active member. He was loved by many and we will miss him forever.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Coal City community has come together to cheer on Megan Bugg, the daughter of local superintendent Kent Bugg, as she fights an advanced stage of cancer.

Bugg, superintendent of Coal City Community School District Unit 1, noticed a bump on his 13-year-old daughter’s arm Christmas Day. After talking with her further, he discovered it had been there for a few weeks.

He and his wife Deb made an appointment the next day to see her pediatrician. They were informed Megan likely had cancer.

They took her to Lurie Children’s Hospital within Central DuPage Hospital, discovering she had Stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma cancer, which starts in the body’s soft tissues.

“A lot of emotions happen when you hear your child has Stage 4 cancer,” Bugg said.

The family received a lot of calls from friends and family who wanted to check on how Megan and her family were doing, so he created a blog, “Megan Bugg’s Journey,” to update everyone at once.

“Sometimes being a superintendent can be a lonely job,” Bugg said. “In a quiet moment at the hospital, I told my wife this is going to be a long, lonely process.”

But Bugg was shocked to find out that wasn’t the case.

The community responded to his blog as it was shared

around social media sites. He said he can’t believe the support the family has gotten.

“So many people on social media jumped on board,” Bugg said. “The messages of support and stories from others have really affected Megan.”

On Jan. 4, Bugg chronicled the first day of treatment for Megan at the hospital: “Day one of Megan’s recovery is over. It sounds strange, but I take comfort in knowing there will never be another day one.”

After her initial round of chemo, the family returned to Coal City, where Megan could rest in the comfort of her own home.

When the family pulled off Interstate 55 onto Illinois 113 that day, Bugg said they were greeted by electronic signs that flashed the words “Team Megan,” and he said the family felt the love of the community supporting their brave youngest daughter.

The community has embraced “Team Megan” and the idea that no one fights cancer alone.

Her eighth-grade volleyball team had practice shirts made in bright pink with Team Megan and the girls’ numbers on the back, and the words “No one fights alone” on the front.

“It’s to tell her we like her and we love her,” teammate Sydney Wren said.

Another teammate, Paityn Smith, said she knows Megan will need a lot of support to make it through, and her team wants to be there for her.

“This is where she goes to school, even people she didn’t know are here for her,” teammate Lauren Phillips said.

Even the city has gotten behind the Bugg family.

Village President Neal Nelson had a banner created that reads “Team Megan,” and the village took a photo with it at their last board meeting.

The sign was passed on to the Grundy County Board, which also took a photo to show support.

New attorney still being debated in Grundy

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County State’s Attorney’s office is no closer to hiring a new attorney after the Grundy County Personnel Committee met Thursday night.

State’s Attorney Jason Helland has presented a proposal to add a new position to his office so that assistant attorney Chris Dearth can be cross trained to handle more civil cases and prepare to take over the type of cases currently being handled by assistant attorney Perry Rudman when he retires.

“I’m a realist,” Helland said. “He [Rudman] loves working for the County Board,

he’s a great guy, but we need to cross train a successor.

Just for succession alone it’s a must. It would be the wise thing to do.”

The resolution received recommendation from the Law and Justice Committee, and when the resolution went before the board Tuesday it was sent to the Personnel Committee.

Helland said the state’s attorney’s office has the money to pay the first year and half of salary and benefits from the state’s attorney’s fee fund and the drug asset forfeiture fund for fiscal 2015, so he is not asking the county to budget for the new position. However, legally, the board must create the position.

The additional attorney would be assigned to handle drug court, half of the misdemeanor cases including all drug cases, juvenile abuse and neglect, juvenile delinquency and felony drug cases, Helland said.

Board member John Galloway voiced concerns about why the position is warranted.

“Two finance meetings ago you came to us and told us people were being laid off at the Kankakee State’s Attorney office and you thought it would be a good idea to pick them up,” Galloway said. “Prior to this, I’ve never heard you say that you are understaffed or that you need someone.”

Grundy health department warns residents to check houses for radon MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Grundy County Health Department encourages everyone to test their home for Radon as part of National Radon Action Month this month.

Many people are unaware of the risks associated with radon for themselves and their children, according to a news release. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas released in rock, soil and water that can build up to dangerous levels inside any home. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without a basement.

Radon gas is odorless and invisible and the only way to know if your home has a radon problem is to test for it.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency reports that if a home or building tests at 4 picocuries per liter or higher, action should be taken to reduce the level of radon. At least 38 percent of the buildings tested in Grundy County have been found to exceed the 4 pCi/L standard.

Help is available to fix a radon problem. You can call the state radon office at 217-7821325 to find qualified radon mitigators in your area. Also local companies with radon mitigators are in the phone

book or online. The cost to reduce radon depends on how your home was built and how you use it. Most homes can be fixed for about the same cost as other common home repairs.

Test kits can be bought at many local hardware stores and from the American Lung Association for $12 by calling 800-LUNG USA, according to the release.

But Galloway said he remains neutral on the idea.

Personnel chairwoman Vicki Geiger asked if Helland feels his caseload is heavier than it has been.

Helland said that in the past, under other state’s attorneys, many land use issues were farmed out, and now the office has brought these services in house to save the county money.

“I hate to farm out the cases, call an attorney and start paying for a 15 minute phone call,” Helland said. “My thought is by bringing an attorney on board may cost something ini-

tially, but it will save the county on professional services.”

Helland said that in the past Electoral Board proceedings were farmed out as well to other attorneys who bill for the services. He gave an example of the current proceedings regarding the Gardner Fire Protection District objections.

He personally handled the objections and will issue a finding, saving the county between $7,500 and $10,000 in fees.

He said his office is saving money hand over fist, but the bottom line remains that Dearth needs to be cross trained.

No action was taken and the committee asked to have it on next month’s agenda when they can discuss it further.

Community Foundation moving to former We Care home

With We Care of Grundy County moving out of its 520 W. Illinois Ave., Morris location, the foundation will be moving in.

“We’ve rented for the last 15 years and thought if ever a time we could find a place, particularly with the CanalPort Community Center for nonprofits, it was a natural move for us,” foundation president Ralph Wolter said.

The foundation is buying the We Care condo in the center for $100,000. The condo is 3,670 square feet, so it is paying about $27 a square foot, said Julie Buck, executive director of the foundation.

The foundation board is paying for half of the purchase with a match from Jim and Carol Baum. Jim Baum is a trustee of the board, but also

is founder and past president.

The foundation expects to close on the building March 1. After some remodeling work, which is being drafted

by Gregory Lyons of Narvick Brothers, the hope is to move in May or June, Buck said.

The foundation has been working on the purchase since We Care first decided it was looking for a new location, Buck said. We Care recently purchased a building at 534 Bedford Road in Morris, which is 18,000 square feet, for $200,000. We Care is fixing the building that has been vacant for some time and expects to move in by the end of February.

With some remodeling, the new location for the foundation will give it three offices for its staff, plus room for three satellite offices the organization plans to offer to local nonprofits that do not have office space in Grundy County.

It also will have a small meeting room, copy room and kitchenette. It will take over

the current community conference room provided at the CanalPort Community Center. The conference room still will be offered to the public; the foundation will just take over organizing its use, Buck said.

The plan also is to do some cosmetic work to the outside of the condo.

“Everybody enjoys ownership and through the generosity of the board, we are not going to have a mortgage or rent, so there is a financial benefit,” Buck said.

“It’s a little bit off the beaten path, but Jim and Carol imagined it as a nonprofit hub; and if we get the satellite offices, it will be more of a nonprofit hub,” she continued. “And if the nonprofits are providing more services in Grundy County, that’s better for the residents of Grundy County.”

clude making sure power plants in the 38th District continue to thrive, fully securing a buyer and developer for the Hennepin steel site, protecting landowners from a controversial high-voltage overhead transmission line called Rock Island Clean Line, creating a better business climate for business owners, expanding internship opportunities for local students, fully funding schools and securing more resources to help communities fight flooding.

On Thursday, Rezin spoke about another local initiative she, other officials and energy industry leaders are working

on – a new curriculum at Joliet Junior College to train local students for the nuclear industry.

Students leave the state for such training and the energy industry recruits from there.

By providing the program locally, where this industry is located, she said jobs can stay with local families who already know how this industry works.

“We are a district who understands and welcomes this industry. We just need to have the curriculum local so the industry can hire local,” she said.

The program is in the works and is expected to roll out in the next year.

“I want to work with Governor [Bruce] Rauner and colleagues on both sides of the aisle to bring about change that will impact quality of life including education, health care, transportation and veteran services,” Anthony said.

As he settles in to this term, he’s also settling in to a new office, as he has moved his Morris office from south of the river into town.

“We’ve started the process of getting moved and will be having a soft opening,” Anthony said. “Once we are completely moved and open, we will have an open house where constituents can come and ask questions.”

Anthony said he will use the open house time to answer any questions residents have and that if he doesn’t have an answer, he will work toward finding the answer.

“I want people to get to know who John Anthony is,” he said.

Jessica Barr, Anthony’s chief of staff, said the office needed more space than what was available at the old place, and felt if they were going to move they wanted to find a location that was more convenient and accessible to the residents of the 75th District.

“The office was so far from Interstate 80 and many people’s GPS application took them to the wrong location,” Barr said.

The new location at Illinois 47 and Maple Street is closer to the interstate and is surrounded by a lot of businesses, Anthony said.

“I want to be where people can find me, to be accessible to everyone,” he said.

Much as Bugg didn’t expect such an overwhelming show of support, he also didn’t expect the strength that he has witnessed in Megan.

“Megan is the more shy daughter, the one that needs protection,” Bugg said. “Her attitude has been wonderful.

She has never once said, ‘Why has this happened to me?’ She doesn’t like it, but she wants to know the next step and is ready to go to the next treatment.”

He said the doctors have told them the tumors already are getting smaller.

“It’s 54 weeks of treatment no matter what,” Bugg said.

“But we are really excited the tumors are already getting smaller.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For the first half of the first quarter Thursday night, the Morris boys basketball team couldn’t score against DeKalb. The Barbs jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Jake Walker hit a 3-pointer for Morris to make it, 9-3, with 4:03 to play in the quarter.

After that, however, the Redskins had little trouble finding the basket, especially Austin Patterson. Patterson made the first seven 3-point shots he attempted and finished 9 of 12 from 3-point range as Morris rallied, but eventually lost a 51-49 Northern Illinois Big 12 East decision.

After the 9-0 deficit, Morris began chipping away, closing to within 15-8 by the end of the first quarter. Patterson drained four 3-pointers in the second quarter and Walker hit one just before the buzzer to tie the score at 29 at half.

Morris (11-5, 2-2) then used a pair of 3-pointers by Patterson and a driving basket by Walker to take a 37-33 lead in the third quarter, which it maintained and held a 42-38 edge entering the fourth.

Then it got interesting.

After a pair of free throws

by DeKalb’s Luke Davis, Patterson hit a 3-pointer to make it, 45-40. After a DeKalb technical foul, Patterson missed both free throws, and the Redskins turned it over on the resultant possession.

The teams traded single free throws after that before a 3-pointer by DeKalb’s Michael Pollack made it 47-46 Morris with 55 seconds left.

Evan Bjelland then made both ends of a one-and-one with 32.1 seconds left before Davis scored to make it 49-48 with 18.5 remaining.

With 16.1 seconds left, Walker missed the front end of a one-and-one and Pollack gathered the rebound for the Barbs. Rudy Lopez then drained a 3-pointer from the right corner with 3.3 seconds left to give DeKalb a 51-49 lead. It was the only shot Lopez took all game.

“DeKalb executed in the last four minutes of the game, and got the baskets they needed,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “We didn’t do that.

We had too many empty possessions in the second half.

We only had one field goal in the fourth quarter.

“At times, it seemed like it was like pulling teeth to get our guys to talk on the floor.

And, our body language was poor. That’s part of the mental side of the game that we really need to work on. Now, we have a day to work on it before going up to Rochelle on Saturday.”

Patterson led all scorers with 27 points, while Walker scored 10 for the Redskins.

Indians alum excited to pitch for Braves

I’ll have a good chance to show them what I can do.”

Foltynewicz said he is excited to be with an organization with a history of success.

“A lot of guys have a lot of success out of Atlanta through the years,” he said. “I’m excited to be able to put on that jersey. I’ve heard good things about the organization from guys who played there, and I’m glad to be part of the rebuilding they are doing right now.”

Foltynewicz was drafted by Houston 19th overall out of Minooka in 2010. Coincidentally, he was selected 685 picks ahead of Gattis, who was a 23rd-round pick that year.

In Foltynewicz’s first taste of the big leagues, he had a 5.30 ERA for the Astros last September. In 16 relief appearances, he worked 182⁄3 innings, struck out 14 and walked seven.

Foltynewicz largely has been a starting pitcher in his minor league career. He started in 2014 for Houston’s Triple-A team at Oklahoma City.

However, he also has pitched in relief.

Before the trade, it was

widely assumed he would compete for a spot in the Astros’ starting rotation in spring training. Now, it will be the Braves’ brain trust – particularly manager Fredi Gonzalez and pitching coach Roger McDowell – that will decide how best to use him.

“I’ve kind of been molded to start, and that’s what I would like to do,” he said.

Something that will be different in Foltynewicz’s life – besides the uniform – is that he will be in the National League and swinging the bat again. He was quite a hitter at Minooka, “but it’s been five-six years,” he noted.

“A lot of friends have been saying, ‘Hey, you’ll be hitting now.’ I have to work on that.

I don’t want to embarrass myself trying to hit against major league pitching.”

Minooka has scheduled a ceremony to retire Foltynewicz’s high school jersey number Jan. 30, when the Indians’ boys basketball team entertains Plainfield East.

Foltynewicz said he plans to attend. It will be a good opportunity for his former teammates, classmates and coaches to wish him well as he begins Minooka graduate Mike Foltynewicz gets ready to deliver a pitch his career with the Atlanta during his major league debut in Toronto. He will be pitching for the Braves.

Mike Foltynewicz made his major league debut in September with the Houston Astros.

He likely will make his mark as a big-league pitcher with the Atlanta Braves.

The Astros and Braves completed a five-player trade late Wednesday night. Foltynewicz, armed with his electric, 100-mph fastball, is considered the centerpiece of the three-player package Atlanta received.

Of course, with the rave reviews Foltynewicz had been receiving all along from the Astros’ brass after he became their first-round draft pick in 2010, he did not expect a trade.

“I got up and saw a text from [local sports journalist and longtime friend] Tommy Stokke,” Foltynewicz said. “He asked me what that was about me being traded to Atlanta. I said, ‘No, I don’t know anything about that.’

“Then I started seeing my name on social media, and one of the big guys, Ken Rosenthal, was reporting it. I thought then it had been confirmed. But I still waited 12 or 13 hours, wondering, before the Astros called and said they had traded me. It was a shock at first, but this is a business. It’s an honor to be traded for a player like Evan Gattis.”

The Braves’ focus this off-season has been to get younger and rebuild. Foltynewicz fits that directive. Houston acquired power-hitting Gattis and relief pitcher James Hoyt in exchange for Foltynewicz and two other prospects, fellow right-hander Andrew Thurman and third baseman Rio Ruiz.

Foltynewicz said he has received calls from a couple members of the Braves’ front office, and they said they have big plans for him.

“I was a big part of the trade, and I think they will have me go into spring training as one

Be careful about getting hopes too high We love John Fox! Love, love, love.

Like that old Beatles song, this refrain swells up from Bears fans and armchair rebuilders of Chicago’s lousy NFL team.

If recent Broncos coach Fox is named the Bears’ coach soon, the love-fest is won because he’s the darling of the day. After a 5-11 season, a second pitiful year of no defense and the firing of just about every coach who helped stir the pot of toad eyes and frog warts, the Bears are ready to cook. Or so it seems.

Lots of teams have gone from underachieving to deep in the NFL playoffs from one season to the next after making some critical changes and acquisitions. We’ll mention the New England Patriots here. They went from 5-11 in 2000 to Super Bowl champs in 2001.

Sure, you can bring up the fact that a quarterback named Tom Brady threw only three passes for the Patriots as a rookie in 2000 and 413 in 2001.

Let’s remember the way we fall in love with coaches, players and managers, then forget they existed. Whatever happened to Mike Shanahan, the former coach who was everyone’s darling a month ago?

Hmmm?

Todd Bowles, the Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator? Quietly gone to the New York Jets. Jim Harbaugh?

Took millions to join the “amateur game” at Michigan.

Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn?

Nowhere yet, but he reportedly is the Atlanta Falcons’ top candidate.

These were all hot Bears prospects. But now it’s Fox, and he might be worthy of all the love. He knows the game.

He has been around. He has taken two teams to the Super Bowl. He became available suddenly and unexpectedly when he and the Broncos parted ways Monday.

But is he the savior?

We have flavors du jour in Chicago, many of whom are duds or never show up (thankfully). Remember the coveting of NBA star Carmelo Anthony? Of Japanese pitching sensation Masahiro Tanaka?

Or NHL goalie Ryan Miller?

Of manager Ryne Sandberg?

Dusty Baker, for God’s sake!

The guy who never has lost a game for your team is the one who is most coveted. So it goes. And dream fellows actually work out occasionally. I’d

put pre-injury Derrick Rose in that category. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Tom Thibodeau. (We were in love with him, weren’t we?)

But here’s what Fox will confront if he signs with the Bears and comes down from the pedestal upon which he has been placed, the throne that drove the doomed John Keats to write: Still, to hear [his] tender-taken breath, And so live ever – or else swoon to death.

First, Fox must deal with a quarterback who is either a leech on the program or a misunderstood skill player. Jay Cutler sits in the middle of this franchise like an Easter Island dummy. Who the heck is he?

Nobody knows, even after six seasons.

Cut him and wacky but greatly skilled receiver Brandon Marshall, and the Bears will have to pay out many millions of dollars to them – along with the millions they owe fired coach Mark Trestman and fired general manager

Phil Emery.

Keep Cutler and Marshall, and Fox will have his hands full trying to create a new air of winning. Moreover, if Cutler is sent packing, the search for a new quarterback might take years.

Then there’s the vague Bears culture that permeates everything. It comes from being a family-owned operation, one that never has let an outsider fully wrest operational control from the McCaskey clan, with Ted Phillips there as some sort of Godfather-style consigliere. What Phillips knows, we’ll never know. So be it.

Then-Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt was the hottest thing going in early 1993. The Bears “won” him, and he went 40-56 in six seasons with them.

Be careful whom you love, folks. And how far you dream.

Wilderness signage: Purple is the new ‘No Trespassing’ On last Sunday, I drove to town through the countryside.

As I zipped by one property, something caught my eye. The image recalled a memory from long ago, deep in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.

Purple, painted, dots decorated the sides of trees along the edge of a fence line.

The first time I trekked to the Natural State to go hunting, I noticed purple dots all over the place. Naturally, I asked the guys I traveled with and they informed me of the local custom. They said that purple dots painted on the side of the trees means that the property has been posted and that people should be forewarned there is no trespassing allowed. Interesting.

After that particular trip, I did a little further investigating and realized why the state government of Arkansas instituted that idea. They had decided that No Trespassing signs were too easily removed

or destroyed. The purple dots are much harder to remove and therefore broadcast their warning to trespassers in a more successful manner. This movement in Arkansas originally came from agricultural groups, the lumber industry, and sporting organizations.

The whole idea of needing a sign to tell someone that the property is private is profound to me. Never would I consider just rambling across a fence and into someone’s land that I didn’t know. Apparently, that type of consideration is not enough because there are plenty of people who will just amble about someone else’s land. Therefore most state governments, including Illinois, require that landowners either give a verbal or written warning to people to let them know the land is private and they need to stay off. The traditional No Trespassing sign counts as a written warning. Having such

In 2011, the State of Illinois also adopted the purple paint idea from Arkansas and Missouri. The purpose of the bill is to allow landowners a more permanent solution to making sure that their property is posted. You may think that just slopping some purple paint on a tree will suffice; not quite.

There are specific rules and regulation regarding how the paint is to be used. If you look up Illinois Senate bill 1914 you will find the guidelines. I will touch on just a few of them.

The paint marking must be a vertical line at least eight inches in length. The bottom of

the marking must be 3 to 5 feet above the ground, and there must be no more than one hundred feet between marks.

If you are going to mark fence post caps the regulations are as follows: A capped post with purple paint must be marked on at least the top two inches. The bottom of the cap or mark must be between 3, and 5 feet, 6 inches, above the ground.

Marked posts must be no more than 36 feet apart. Basically, the lavender law needs to be plainly visible, just like when posting a regular sign.

Honestly, when I first saw those purple splotches all over the pristine Ozarks, I felt somewhat disgusted. I first viewed it as vandalism-like.

It stands out from the natural surroundings and brings attention to itself. Which is exactly what it is supposed to do, still I didn’t like it.

Then I started to notice all the No Trespassing signs

posted back here in Illinois.

There are hundreds of them down just about any country road you travel. I finally came to the realization that the purple paint stood out to me because I was not used to it.

The metal signs, which are just as jarring, had become invisible to me.

The only place it cannot be used, according to Illinois law, is in municipalities with a population of 2,000,000 people or more. For us, Chicago is the only place where the purple postings cannot be used.

I hope I have answered any questions you may have about the purple paint on the sides of trees. In the past 12 months, I have had more than one person ask me about it. We are starting to see more property owners around here use this method of posting.

In Congress, it’s still party all the time First impressions suggest the Republicans in control of Congress aren’t ready to put aside partisanship and govern if it means making peace with President Barack Obama, who is scheduled to meet with congressional leaders at the White House this week. In a resounding rebuke of House Speaker John Boehner’s past willingness to compromise with the president, 24 Republicans voted against his re-election last week.

Because of a number of absences, Boehner (R., Ohio) didn’t need their votes. Still, it marked only the fourth time since 1913 that a speaker was elected without a majority of the full House.

In another signal that Congress and the president are likely to keep fighting, House Republicans announced their first goal would be to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which Obama promised to veto.

Congress’ persistence on the issue ignores gas prices, which have been plummeting even without the additional access to Canadian tar-sands oil that the pipeline would provide.

The southern leg of the pipeline was finished last year and is providing U.S. oil producers improved access to Gulf Coast refineries. Finishing the northern end of the pipeline, which Republican House members have made a cause celebre, would help Canadian oil companies more than American ones.

But the state of politics is such that members of Congress care more about symbolic victories than common ground on issues, such as rebuilding the country’s deteriorating infrastructure, which would create many more jobs than building the pipeline.

Despite the unsuccessful revolt against him, or maybe because of it, Boehner stayed on message in supporting Keystone XL. The Senate, now also under Republican control for the first time since 2006, might remain the best hope for bipartisanship. It helps that the new majority leader, Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), said he wants to prove that Republicans can govern.

Congress welcomed 58 new House members and 13 new senators last week. It may not take long to tell whether they will become part of another “do-nothing” Congress. With Obama threatening vetoes, GOP House members are already counting override votes.

If Americans see more of the same from Congress, members of both parties can expect to pay for it at the polls. That’s less likely to happen if McConnell and Boehner refuse to be pushed around by the latest wave of hardline conservatives.

The sobering sermon of a Maryland bishop The bishop was candid with the small flock at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, just outside of Baltimore: She had a sobering sermon for them.

“We can’t go back. We can’t do it over. In real life, there are no instant replays.”

This sermon was delivered weeks before the accident – two days after Christmas – in which police report that Cook’s car veered into a wide bike lane and hit a 41-year-old father of two, sending the cyclist crashing onto

Infectious urethritis improves with antibiotics Dear Doctor K: The doctor says I have urethritis. How did I get it?

Dear Reader: Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. Urethritis is quite common, both in men and women.

It is more common in younger adults, because they are more likely to be sexually active with multiple partners.

Urethritis is usually caused by one of two types of sexually transmitted infections: Gonococcal urethritis is caused by the bacteria that cause gonorrhea. Gonorrhea is sometimes called clap. Gonorrhea infections are passed from person to person during sexual activity. This includes vaginal, oral and anal intercourse.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Non-gonococcal urethritis is caused by all sexually transmitted bacteria other than gonorrhea. The most frequent cause is a particular type of bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis.

You can prevent both of these infections by: • not having sex; • having sex with only one uninfected partner; • consistently using male latex condoms during sexual activity.

Much less often, urethritis results from a physical injury from something like a urinary catheter. Or it may

occur because of exposure to a chemical in an antiseptic or a spermicide that causes irritation of the lining of the urethra.

Urethritis usually causes pain or burning during urination and an urge to urinate more frequently. Another symptom is redness around the opening of the urethra.

Men with infectious urethritis may have a yellow discharge from the urethra. Women are less likely than men to have symptoms from gonorrhea and chlamydia.

If you have infectious urethritis, you will be treated with antibiotics. Do not have sex until your antibiotic treatment is complete. Otherwise, you could spread the infection to your partner. (Your sexual partner or partners should

be treated with antibiotics as well.)

Many people have gonorrhea and chlamydia at the same time. So if you are treated for gonorrhea, your doctor will probably also treat you for chlamydia. That means you may need to take two types of antibiotics.

Once you start taking antibiotics, infectious urethritis improves rapidly. Even without treatment, symptoms usually go away within three months. However, people continue to remain infectious and spread the bacteria to others, even when they have no symptoms.

Urethritis caused by injury or chemical irritation is rare.

You do not need any specific treatment for this type of urethritis. The symptoms will go

away if you avoid whatever it was that caused the problem.

In the meantime, your doctor may prescribe medication to ease your symptoms.

The bacteria that cause both gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis can spread if they are not diagnosed and treated – from a woman’s cervix to her fallopian tubes, for example. There, they can cause permanent scarring and infertility. They also can spread through the blood to other parts of the body, including the heart, liver and joints.

So if you have symptoms of urethritis, take them seriously and contact your doctor.
