Merchant Marine pen pal remembered

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – When Carol Walker was an eighth-grader at Mazon Grade School, her world was small. She lived in town, close enough to walk to school, was an only child, and her family didn’t take many vacations.

But on Nov. 28, 1958, her world abruptly grew. Beginning one fall day and lasting for 12 years, she reached out to Venice, Guam, Casablanca, Barcelona – even AntarctiCarol Walker ca. It was the beginning of a friendship with a Merchant Marine – a married Texas father of two – who became Walker’s pen pal and shared his adventures with a curious young girl.

“It was an important relationship to me,” said Walker, who now lives in Morris. “It opened the world from Mazon, Illinois, because we didn’t travel much. It was intriguing to me to learn about other parts of

couldn’t wait to get home. It was always a big day when I got a letter from him.”

Sometimes, there were several letters a week. Other times, there would be gifts.

Among them were little Venetian glass animals, a handstitched linen tablecloth from Spain, an eight-piece Noritake china set, an ebony coffee table from Vietnam and a liter bottle of Chanel Number 5 perfume.

Walker would respond to Thawley’s letters the same day.

She would share what her life was like and ask about his. She was fascinated about what it was like to travel the world.

Although Thawley never mentioned he was involved in any wartime activity, Walker said he often was in ports around Vietnam and Korea during times of conflicts.

County’s HR director has ‘hit the ground running’

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After just 10 days on the job, Grundy County’s new Human Resources Director Deborah Jankiewicz is hard at work.

She officially started Jan. 5 as human resource director.

Jankiewicz has 15 years of human resources experience and has worked for Marshall Fields, Schneider Logistics, University of Chicago Hospitals and the village of Alsip.

“I hit the ground running the first week,” she said Wednesday. “I’ve been working on things that need to be

done and spending time getting to know people.”

Personnel Committee Chairwoman Vicki Geiger said the board is excited to have Jankiewicz on staff.

“The Personnel Committee is excited that it was a unanimous vote by the entire board to hire her not only as HR, but as a full-time HR,” Geiger said.

Jankiewicz said she looks forward to her career with Grundy County, and plans to be here long term.

She wants to balance the need of associates – a term she prefers over employees – and the county. She said she likes

to function as an unbiased third party.

“I want to make sure taxpayers are spending their money well,” she said.

Geiger said it will be an asset to staff and to the community to have someone in position to work with the county’s more than 200 employees.

“It’s important to have someone available to all the employees,” Geiger said. “She also will handle insurance, job descriptions, or if they need time off for medical reasons, she’s the go-to person to talk to.”

Some of her time will be spent looking at past practices

and seeing how she can improve them going forward.

Jankiewicz holds a Senior Professional Human Resources certification, bachelor’s degree in human resources management, and is nearly done pursuing her master’s in human resource management.

Grundy County Electoral Board rules in favor of Perkins

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com GARDNER – The Grundy County Electoral Board has overruled one of the objections filed against the petitions of two Gardner Fire Protection District Board candidates.

Last week objections were filed against the petitions of two board candidates by a third candidate. There are two positions available on the board: one for a four-year term and the other for a six-year term.

In addition to Olson, the electoral board also is made up of State’s Attorney Jason Helland and Circuit Clerk Karen Slattery.

Gardner fire district incumbent John Hollmeyer is running for the four-year term.

Area pitches in to ‘Bring Katelynn Home’

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – No one knows exactly what happened at 10:46 a.m. Aug. 29 on a rural road near Seneca.

The roads were fine, as were the weather conditions, and no texting teens were involved in the head-on collision between a semitrailer and a vehicle driven by Seneca High School junior Katelynn Ortiz.

Katelynn’s rescuers and

doctors said they don’t know what kept her alive.

She was airlifted to a major trauma center.

Life-threatening injuries – a brain bleed, lacerated kidneys and more Katelynn – were attended Ortiz to during a fourhour surgery.

Katelynn also had two broken arms, a broken pelvis, com-

pound fractures of her left femur and tibia, and a shattered kneecap.

“At the hospital, they didn’t think she would survive,” said her aunt, Tricia Murray. “She had so many injuries that they couldn’t fix everything. They had to concentrate on the most serious injuries. We do have a strong faith, and we knew God was on our side.”

Since that day, Katelynn has gone through 13 surgeries, including three brain sur-

geries, a two-week coma and more. She’s at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and is showing slight improvements.

Katelynn still can’t move much or talk, but Murray said as the medication dosages are lowered, she is expected to become more responsive.

“We’ve been told by the doctors that she will never live an independent life,” Murray said, “but the brain is a very mysterious organ. ... She’s awake now, and she’s starting

Another good sign occurred when her speech therapist was teaching Katelynn to hum, the start of relearning to speak. People were asking her to say, “mom,” and she hummed a couple of times, then yelled out, “mom.”

Hopes were that Katelynn could come home by early February, but doctors have told the family that’s unlikely.

Her mother, Taryn, and her father, Rico, take shifts staying with her.

Her family misses their vivacious Katelynn, whom her mother describes as “a happy, fun-loving child.” She loved to hang out with her friends and go shopping, Taryn Ortiz said, and was excited about her new job at the Morris Dairy Queen.

A group of friends and family called “Katelynn’s Angels” have organized a GoFundMe account website for financial support. Donations can be

made at www.gofundme.com/ bringkatelynnhome.

Much work needs to be done on the family’s Seneca home to make it accessible.

There are also the expenses of traveling back and forth to Chicago several times a week for therapy and doctors’ appointments, and the medical bills are enormous, according to Katelynn’s aunt. A handicapped-accessible van also is needed.

Katelynn’s friends and teachers at Seneca High School are selling T-shirts to raise money for the family and a benefit is planned for May 30.

A special account also has been set up at the Twin Oaks Saving Banks in Morris and Marseilles called “Katelynn Ortiz’s Benefit.” Donation boxes have been placed at businesses throughout Morris, Seneca, Marseilles and Ottawa.

“We want to ask the community to continue to pray for our family and for Katelynn’s return,” Murray said. “We are overwhelmed by the support that has been given so far.”

How do I get whiter teeth?

Most of us want that Hollywood white smile, or at least something whiter than what we have currently, but achieving those results can be difficult. Before discussing how to get teeth whiter, let’s start with what makes teeth darker. Smoking, red wine, dark soda, coffee, and tea are just some examples of substances that tend to stain teeth making them look darker. At the same time, certain medications can stain teeth as well. And the only way to remove those stains is by a dental professional cleaning. No amount of brushing will remove stain. Teeth that are stained will also not bleach well. There are different options for bleaching teeth. Any whitening toothpaste will give marginal results.The over the counter whitening strips work relatively well, but often do not stick well on the teeth. The most important factor in any whitening is how much hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide is in the product.

The higher the percentage, the more teeth will bleach. But at the same time, the higher the percentage, the more likely that you will be sensitive. A dental professional typically has two methods of bleaching. The first way is through bleaching trays. Custom trays are fabricated that fit to your teeth and you are given strong bleach material to use in the trays. Typical results occur after two weeks.

The other method is in-office bleaching, where teeth are bleached in an hour. Patients go home with whiter teeth. Sensitivity is highest with the in-office bleaching. For the best results, a combination of the in-office bleaching and bleaching trays is the way to go.

The Morris housing market was very good in 2014. Although we saw a decrease in the number of homes sold from 221 homes in 2013 to 199 homes in 2014, the difference was mostly attributed to the fewer number of foreclosures sold in 2014. We also saw a 12.5% increase in the median home price in Morris from 2013 to 2014, so home owners are gaining back some of the equity in their homes that they lost during the recent housing downturn. I expect the Morris housing market to continue to see improvements in 2015.

poetic. She was surprised to learn later that her pen pal had only a fourth-grade education.

“His writing was beautiful,” she said, “and he was so eager to write. I just think it’s amazing that a man would go to that effort. I think it was a need we both had to express to each other. He was a sweet man.”

Thawley even called Walker on her 16th birthday. She fondly remembers the unexpected call she took on her pink princess phone. When she began dating Dick, Thawley told her to ask if he minded their continued correspondence.

“At some point, he became ‘Uncle Bert’ in the family,” Walker said. “This man meant just so much to me. How can someone mean that much to you when you never met him?

It was like this private little story in my life.”

Walker received the last letter from Thawley in 1970. He was retired by that time and home in Texas.

“I wish to say that at this time that I have enjoyed corresponding with you through the years,” he wrote. “But don’t be surprised to hear at any time that I have passed away.”

His wife, Lillie, wrote her in 1973 telling her he had died.

Walker saved all of the letters and gifts until a couple of years ago, when she passed them along to his sons.

Carol Walker Morris resident For the next two years, Thawley’s son Stan compiled the letters and postcards and maps into a coffee table-type book called, “Bert and Carol, A Collection of Letters.” He presented her with a copy for Christmas, 56 years after the first letters were exchanged.

“It was such a surprise when I got those letters,” Stan Thawley said. “I felt they needed to be preserved and felt I wanted to share them with my son and my nephew and with Carol. It was just such a treasure chest out of the blue.”

“I love the book,” Walker said. “I am not a crier at all, but then I opened the book and saw that big postcard to me at the school and his picture and mine next to each other, and it was overwhelming to me. After giving them all those letters, I now have them back again.”

MORRIS – Much has changed since the last time Patti Olson of Morris was selected Fire Starter of the Month at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.

For starters, she has four more grandchildren, and has assumed a new role at the hospital having switched about a year ago from ICU Unit Secretary to an Application Specialist/Physician Liaison in the Information Technology department, according to a news release.

What has stayed the same, however, is Olson’s love for computer work, her love for working with doctors, and her dedication to Morris Hospital and desire to make things better by sharing her knowledge with others. For all of those reasons, Olson was selected as Morris Hospital’s November 2014 Fire Starter of the Month.

Olson first joined the team at Morris Hospital in 1977 as a med/surg unit secretary. In 1998, she transferred to ICU

and made her mark there as unit secretary, as evident by being selected Fire Starter of the Month in Patti Olson November 2010.

Olson always has had a way of contributing beyond her role and as a result has been part of the Meditech core team since its inception in 2000. She was a natural resource when Morris Hospital began making the transition to computerized physician order entry in 2010, and thus a perfect fit for the new IT role last year.

“While patients are always our main focus, it’s very important to me that I am right alongside physicians and staff when they are working through new processes,” Olson said in the release. “We’re about four years into our CPOE journey, and the physicians have made great progress with entering their own orders and documenting their progress notes online. Quinn’s manner of departure no surprise We used this space last week to describe the disappointing tenure of Pat Quinn’s time as Illinois governor.

We pointed out Quinn’s failed leadership on issues such as pension reform and state spending. Too often, he stood on the sidelines and, therefore, nothing got done in a timely manner.

We also pointed out how Quinn had devolved from a political reformer to typical Springfield lawmaker, finding jobs for friends and failing to change how things work in state government.

So it shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise that as Quinn left office to make way for Gov. Bruce Rauner he exhibited one last time all the characteristics that made his time in office a disappointment.

Quinn left behind “booby traps,” as one Republican lawmaker called them.

Quinn signed an executive order requiring governors to release income tax details, he signed another requiring state contractors pay employees at least $10 an hour instead of the state minimum of $8.25 an hour, he appointed friends to various state government posts – including the spouses of House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton – and he failed to issue licenses to medical marijuana cultivation centers, leaving that for Rauner to deal with.

Unfortunately, that’s business as usual for Quinn, who showed Illinois voters one last time why they got it right when they voted him out of office in November.

Rauner on Tuesday reversed the nearly 200 appointments Quinn made on his way out. He has yet to decide what he will do regarding the income tax details and state contractor executive orders.

Frankly, we hope he keeps in place the executive order regarding governors having to release tax returns.

With medical marijuana, Rauner’s camp said he wants to better understand how the state’s program is being run. He has criticized the existing selection process as secretive and subject to cronyism, which is par for the course in Springfield.

But the fact Quinn left these behind speaks to how Quinn’s entire tenure in Springfield played out. When Illinois voters needed leadership, solid decisions and bipartisan solutions, Quinn gave them the opposite.

VIEWS Rob Oesterle At the Morris Community High School board meeting Monday, a proposal was presented to improve the school’s football stadium, entitled the Morris Community High School Stadium Legacy Project.

Whether or not this project gets off the ground, I have to applaud the sentiment. It’s well beyond time that the MCHS facilities were updated.

First off, I will dispense with saying whether or not I think it should be named after any significant person or people in the school’s history. That brings nothing but drama and arguments, and we should stay focused on the positive aspects of the upgrade. Let’s just call it Redskin Stadium. That’s controversial enough, anyway.

The main focus will be the installation of artificial turf.

The advances that have been made in that technology are unbelievable, and over the years, the cost has gone down.

Long-term, the costs are far less than having to maintain or re-sod the grass surface that covers the field today.

With the rainy fall season we just went through, by the end of the year, that current field was toast. With both the football and soccer programs using it for their games, the grass had no chance to survive, especially under wet, rainy conditions. More than one visiting soccer coach voiced displeasure at the condition of the field, and there were certain portions of it that the football team did its best to avoid. Sometimes, a unique field is a home field advantage, but slipping and falling in the mud doesn’t make it much of an edge.

A modern artificial turf field eliminates those pitfalls.

And the benefits aren’t just for the high school or the football team. The soccer teams will benefit by having a more consistent playing surface.

will be able to be used as a practice field for both teams.

There was a football game this year, in which the field was too muddy to allow the marching band and pom squad to perform. No more. Those kids’ hard work and dedication will get to be put on display during every home game, not just the dry ones.

It can become the center of

community athletic activity.

The Morris Soccer Association can hold their championship games there. The Morris Chiefs and Warriors can play there.

After the surface is taken care of, the next order of business will be upgrading the seating. According to the Legacy Project’s plan, the bleachers will have handi-

with a screen that can be used to generate revenue for the school. The track around the field will be converted to four lanes, and will be able to accommodate gym class and track practice. Another part of the project is to create an agreement with Shabbona School to use their track for home meets. That involves making some improvements to Shabbona’s track as well.

In the plan as well is a VIP parking lot behind the south end zone, whose fees will create another revenue stream for the school. There are plans to upgrade the outdated concession stand and restroom facilities, as well as a legacy/ donor wall and plaza leading up to the stadium.

The saying around the high school is that “Redskin Pride Never Dies.” Well, it’s time to give Morris – and the Redskins – a facility to take pride in.

Bjelland went 4 for 4 from 3-point land in the third quarter and scored 16 points in that quarter alone. By that time, the student section didn’t have much to say.

“I don’t let the crowd bother me,” Bjelland said. “But I knew

we wanted to beat this team [Pontiac] because they were the ones that ended our season in the regional last year.”

With Bjelland dialed in from deep, the Pontiac defense had to pay close attention to him. That left things open for fellow guards Austin Patterson

“They called and asked if we could switch so they could have a little extra rest before that. That was fine with me, since now we don’t have to play back-to-back either.”

Minooka boys rebound with win over Plainfield Central CHANNAHON – Sometimes a loss can be helpful.

“Why did we go all the way to Park Ridge [on Monday night] to play Maine South?” Minooka boys basketball coach Scott Tanaka said. “We went to see what we have to do to become a good program like they have.”

The Indians fell, 40-26, but Tanaka said they played very well. And, he added, there was a carryover effect Tuesday night against Plainfield Central – when Minooka jumped to an 11-0 lead and never trailed by fewer than 10 points en route to a 55-41 Southwest Prairie victory.

The Indians (9-8, 3-3) were strong defensively all night, but especially early. They limited the Wildcats to 26 percent shooting in the first half (6 of 23) in grabbing a 28-13 lead.

“It was a good start defensively and a good first half,” Tanaka said. “The disappoint-

ing thing was the third quarter.

We stressed we had to keep it up in the third quarter, and we didn’t.

“But overall, I have to give the kids the benefit of the doubt.

We went to Park Ridge to get better, and the kids worked just as hard tonight as they did there.”

Central began the second half hitting four of its first five shots and narrowed the deficit to 10 points three times in that quarter. But with Minooka’s Joe Butler having a monster game, the Indians never seriously were threatened. Butler finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. He hit 6 of 8 shots and all six free throw attempts.

Blake Parzych was Butler’s inside support, finishing with six rebounds and four points to go with strong defense. Guard Jon Butler scored 11 points, including 5 of 6 free throws.

“Joe is amazing with what he gets done,” Tanaka said. “He played well defensively, and our

PONTIAC – In the first quarter of Tuesday night’s win over Pontiac, Morris guard Evan Bjelland lined up a shot from beyond the 3-point line. He was a little farther from the basket than he thought, and the ball fell short of the hoop without touching anything.

Of course, the inevitable chants of “Air Ball! Air Ball!” came from the Pontiac student section, as they would from any self-respecting student section.

It was one of the few shots Bjelland missed all night, as he poured in a career-high 33 points in leading the Redskins (11-4) to a 74-69 nonconference win. Other than the one that missed everything, he was 7 of 9 from 3-point range. As a team, Morris shot 14 of 22 from beyond the arc, 15 of 23 if you include superintendent Pat Halloran’s half-court shot at

Fox seems like the best fit for the Bears

By MARK POTASH mpotash@suntimes.com So John Fox never has won a Super Bowl. Are the Bears in any position to be that picky?

In the past four years – Jerry Angelo’s final season as general manager and Phil Emery’s three seasons as GM – the Bears have gone from one step from the Super Bowl to the ground floor. They need help on multiple levels – more talent, real leadership, better locker room chemistry, better player development, stability at quarterback, an identity on defense and better game-day coaching, just for starters.

More than anything, the Bears have to get back on their feet before they start to take the steps necessary to catch the

Lions and the leaps and bounds necessary to catch the Packers.

Fox seems like he’s well suited for what the Bears need at this time. What are the odds that 37-year-old Ryan Pace is going to hit a home run and find his Sean Payton in his first at-bat? He could – we don’t know that much about him.

But maybe his best bet is to take the solid double and go for the fences after he’s developed real power.

Pace doesn’t need someone to hold his hand – if he does, the Bears hired the wrong guy. But a veteran coach, such as Fox – who has been a head coach in the NFL for 13 seasons – figures to make his difficult job a little bit easier. Not that Fox is the only guy for the job. But the Bears could do a lot worse.

That’s not an admirable standard, but this is the Bears we’re talking about. First things first.

There’s something to be said for the timing. Broncos GM John Elway referred to it repeatedly when lauding Fox’s contributions in his opening remarks to reporters at a news conference Tuesday in Denver.

“When I first got the (GM) job four years ago, the first thing I had to do was hire a coach,” Elway said. “John was a perfect guy for the job at that time. His energy the type of guy he [is] and for what we needed four years ago, John was that perfect guy.

“The tenaciousness; his exuberance; his energy – at that time, it was perfect. And he never lost that. It was perfect at the time.”

When Fox arrived in Denver after being fired in Carolina, the Broncos had lost 20 of their previous 26 games. They went 8-8 in Fox’s first season and won a playoff game with Tim Tebow at quarterback. They went 4-0 in overtime games, including a playoff victory over the Steelers.

At that time, Fox was just what the Broncos needed.

“I think the key thing was getting John Fox hired – that was a tremendous help for us to change the culture in the building,” Elway said after that season. “Many times when you go through a streak that we went through, the hardest thing to change is the culture and trying to get the winning mentality back in the players’ minds.

“I think that’s what John did a tremendous job with. We won a lot of close gams. A lot of times when you go through losing streaks, that’s the hardest thing to do. I give credit to John and the whole coaching staff for changing that culture to when we have close games, the mindset wasn’t, ‘What is going to happen for us to lose this game?’ Rather it turned around to, ‘Let’s make a play and figure out a way to win.’ ” Maybe Adam Gase or Teryl Austin or Dan Quinn can do that for the Bears. Is that a chance a first-time GM wants to take? That’s the big decision for Pace. Fox has been described as no better than Lovie Smith.

The way things are going around here, that’s not a bad place to start.

Hawks’ Toews named all-star game captain

By HERB GOULD hgould@suntimes.com Even though they are considered among the cream of the NHL crop, the Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane did not see their All-Star elite status coming.

“We got called into [coach Joel Quenneville’s] office this morning,” Kane said Wednesday. “We kind of looked at each other like, ‘What did we

do over the past couple of days that got us in trouble?’ He gave us the news. We just kind of looked at each and laughed. I thought we were in trouble.”

Far from being in trouble, Toews was named captain of one NHL All-Star team, to be known as Team Toews.

And Kane was named an assistant captain of the other, Team Foligno, to be led by Nick Foligno of Columbus, where the All-Star Game will

be played Jan. 25.

The captains and their assistants will select the remainder of their teams Jan. 23.

“It’s pretty cool,” Toews said. “It’s not something I expected. It’s definitely an honor, so it’s going to be fun sitting across (the draft table) from Kaner.”

The Fantasy Draft format will create some talking points for Toews and Kane.

When a cast takes its bow, I always think that the playwright ought to be there, too. But if the actors are bad, the play will not work.

However, the key word in Richardson’s observation for today’s deal is “others.” Bridge is full of “normal” plays, which work most of the time.

But when an “other” play is needed, that sorts out the experts from the less capable.

This deal occurred in a private game. North-South were using the weak no-trump, in which an opening bid of one no-trump shows 12-14 points. So South’s rebid indicated a strong no-trump, 15-17 points. This had an effect on the opening lead of West, who preferred the spade four, an unbid suit, to a heart, dummy’s bid suit. (Note that if South had opened one strong no-trump, North would have used Stayman, South would have denied a four-card major and North would have jumped to three no-trump. Then West surely would have led a heart.)

East took the first trick with his spade king and stuck to the standard script when he returned his second spade. But South won in his hand, played a diamond to dummy’s king, returned to his hand with a spade and played three more rounds of diamonds. He had nine tricks: three spades, one heart, four diamonds and one club.

Could East have found the fatal heart shift at trick two? It was tough.

Drunk driver can’t forgive himself for taking a life Dear Abby: I am 42 years old and a divorced father of two.

Earlier this year, I caused a fatal drunk driving accident.

Once I came to and realized what I had done, I accepted responsibility and pled guilty to my crime. I have never before been in trouble with the authorities.

I believe God has forgiven me. I know my extremely supportive family and friends have also forgiven me. But how do I forgive myself? I think about it and cry daily for my victim and that family. I pray they will find some comfort that I am behind bars.

I plan to volunteer and use my time to help others as I have done in the past, once I
