By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Police continue to investigate a shooting that left Matthew D. Lyons, 24, of the 2400 block of Oakland Circle, dead over the weekend.

Lyons was declared dead Sunday morning at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, according to Police Chief Brent Dite. He was shot in the head Friday night in a home on Oakland Circle.

“Anytime there is a discharge of a fire arm, which results in a death, there is a death investigation,” Dite said Monday. “There are so many moving parts to this investigation, which is being done by multiple agencies, that it takes time to have answers.”

Robin R. Hexdall, 49, of the 200 block of North Center Street, was arrested and booked into the Will County jail on charges of drug possession, obstructing justice, driving with a suspended license and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.

According to jail records, Hexdall was arrested in 2010 on charges of drug possession and driving with a suspended license. She also was charged with attempting to defraud a drug screening test the following year.

Travis Thompson leaves the cubicle to serve food in his hometown of Morris

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When Travis Thompson graduated in 1994 from Morris Community High School, the only thing he knew for sure about his future is he would play football at Eastern Illinois University.

Fast forward 22 years and he is the owner of Country Glaze Donut Shoppe and Country Backyard BBQ and Burgers. The two establishments sit next to one another at 1514 and 1518 Creek Drive in Morris.

“I got my bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. I’ve worked as a engineer and on the Chicago Board of Trade,” he said. “I was burned out and done with the 60-hour workweek, so I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do next.”

He struggled going to work each day and said he was done with sitting in a cubicle, so he thought about what he enjoyed doing.

A self-described “foodie,” he thought it might be nice to get into the food industry.

He signed up for a baking class at College of DuPage and before he could finish it, the opportunity arose to buy the Country Glaze Donut Shoppe.

“I asked myself if I should finish school or jump in with both feet,” he said. “I decided to jump in.”

After owning the doughnut shop, the next opportunity to present itself was to purchase the barbecue restaurant next door. Thompson figured, “Why not?”

The two restaurants employ several Morris natives whom Thompson has known for years. Tiffany Hall manages the doughnut shop and his sister-in-law, Krissy Neikirk, is the lead baker. Hall’s mother, Johna Countryman, manages the barbecue restaurant, and local chef Eric Olsen is the head pit master.

“We’re very homey here,” Hall said. “We are open to feedback, and we all know it’s easy for Morris people to be honest with other Morris people.”

Hall said it took customers some time to get used to the doughnut shop, which she points out is not a bakery.

“People think we are a bakery. We’re not; we’re just a doughnut shop,” she said. “We offer trendy doughnuts that are fun.”

On the shelf behind the counter, customers can find a maple long john with a strip of bacon down the center, or a doughnut with Fruity Pebbles on top.

District 101 board approves fiscal items Moody’s rating slips by one grade

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The District 101 Board voted, 7-0, Monday night, to approve a couple financial items from its first meeting agenda of 2016.

The board approved adoption of a parameters resolution on the $1.7 million-worth of bonds it intends to issue to increase the district’s working cash fund.

The district has issued bonds to maintain sufficient

funds to handle all operational costs in the second half of the school year, Superintendent Pat Halloran said, since the Collins Power Station closed in 2005.

The board then approved an amendment of the district’s health life safety plan.

The budgeted cost went up from about $39,000 to close to $46,000, Halloran said.

Halloran added that the amendment was accounted for in the district’s 2016 tax levy, which was approved in

December.

According to the health life safety plan, it’s time the district upgrade Morris Community High School’s obsolete building optimization system, which is 20 years old and runs on Windows 95. The operating system controls all of the school’s heating and cooling.

“It’s just time,” Halloran said. “The system has to be updated. We’ve been looking at this for four or five years.”

Halloran said the district is required every 10 years to do a health life safety plan, and an amendment was needed in order to tap onto the 2003 facility upgrade project that included

heating, cooling, ceiling and window upgrades.

The 2003 project cost about $6 million, he said.

“We’re updating the software that runs the big installations in the 2003 project,” Halloran said. “This allows use to use life safety funds for the cost.”

In other news, the district’s Moody Investment Service rating was downgraded from A1 to A2 for the first time in several years.

The purpose of Moody’s ratings is to provide investors with a simple system of gradation by which future relative creditworthiness of securities

may be gauged.

Grades A1-A3 are all considered by Moody to be a upper-medium grades and a low credit risk, according to moodys.com.

Halloran suspects the slight drop in grade is due partially to the lack of a state budget.

“The downside is a potential for a little higher interest costs when we issue this year’s bonds,” Halloran said. “We’ll know more information soon, but an improved Equalized Assessed Value could help us with that grade.”

The district does expect to see a boost in EAV this year.

Grant considered to purchase, demolish flooded homes Grundy County Finance Committee to send resolution to full board

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Finance Committee forwarded Monday night a resolution to the full board with a positive recommendation that would allow Grundy County chairman David Welter to apply for a grant from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency to purchase and tear down three residences affected by the 2013 flooding.

IEMA determined 5975 and 6005 E. Minooka Road, along with 11455 N. Tabler Road, would be eligible to be acquired from property owners who voluntarily participate in the buyout project. The structures would then be demol-

ished.

“The county has been working for two years with IEMA,” County Administrator Doug Pryor said. “This is the first step.”

He said the state originally looked at 13 properties but has redirected its focus on just three of the properties.

Pryor told the committee that the county would still need to meet with homeowners and have appraisals done, but applying for the grant would be a step in the right direction.

The grant would require a 25 percent local match.

Board member John Roth said he is not in favor of the county taking on an added expense but motioned the resolution to go to the full board.

The motion passed, 4-0, with Vicki Geiger, Dick Joyce and Eric Rasmussen also voting to send it to the full board Tuesday night.

Roth said with the financial position the county is in he doesn’t know how high a priority purchasing and demolishing the properties will be for those serving on the Finance Committee and the board when the project gets to that point. Geiger said she has the same concerns. Pryor said he is optimistic the county won’t bear the burden alone.

“I just don’t want to give false hope,” Roth said. “It’s not 100 percent go if we say yes now to this resolution.”

Pryor said the county won’t have a dollar amount to consider without moving forward with the grant application, and the resolution is just to allow the chairman to apply for the grant.

“The county has been working for two years with IEMA. This is the first step.”

This is the first in a twopart series about prescription drug medicines. The second installment about antibiotic resistance is scheduled to run Jan. 19.

JOLIET – Timothy Baran wasn’t sure what was happening last December when he woke up with a sore mouth. It was particularly painful underneath his tongue, but his tongue itself, his cheeks and his palate also hurt.

The 25-year-old from Joliet previously experienced something similar – some mouth soreness and what he thought was a canker sore – but not as severe. He had thought at the time it was from a new toothbrush.

This time, however, things went to a different level. At first, it was soreness and a dry mouth. It progressed quickly throughout the day.

“It was like canker sores,” Baran said, “but at the same time, it was like I had burned myself and my skin was peeling away. ... I could hardly open my mouth.”

He had an odd rash on his torso that was a purplish color. By the end of the day, Baran was in the emergency room.

He had been taking the commonly prescribed medication Bactrim, which is a combination of the antibiotics sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim.

After going to the hospital, Baran was taken off the drug, prescribed antihistamines, steroids and a liquid numbing agent for his mouth.

And he was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which was confirmed two days later by his primary physician.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or toxic epidermal necrolysis, is a severe, life-threatening skin reaction most often triggered by medications.

The resulting skin damage can lead to a dangerous loss of fluids, overwhelming bacterial infections, shock and multiple organ failures.

About 10 percent of people who have it die as a result.

“I feel very blessed,” Baran said. “I had a very, very mild case of it.”

Morris Hospital pharmacist Rebecca Capshaw said many people take prescription side effects with a grain of salt – but they shouldn’t.

“It’s very easy for us to make excuses for what’s going on,” Capshaw said.

“Rashes could be absolutely nothing, but it takes the trained eye of a physician to know that. ... I’m shocked to see how often people wait to call their physician.”

Doctors and pharmacists normally warn patients of common side effects that new medications might cause, she said, but patients also should read the more comprehensive inserts pharmacists include with their prescriptions.

David Thompson, secretary for the fire district’s Board of Trustees, said the fire district has received state approval and secured authorization from Morris Hospital to offer Advanced Life Support service on its ambulances on calls when a certified paramedic is on one of the district’s ambulances.

The district has offered the ALS service since early last month, Thompson said.

He added that the fire district has sought since March the state’s approval for the service upgrade.

The fire district serves a population of about 4,500 residents in a 64-square-mile rural area that includes portions of southern Kendall and northern Grundy counties.

Thompson said the fire district operates out of a single station in Newark and is staffed by volunteers, including about nine certified paramedics who work full time for other area fire districts.

Thompson said when the paramedics are available to respond to an ambulance call, the district now has the ability to offer the ALS service when the paramedics determine it is necessary.

“Previously under our [Basic Life Support] license all we could do for a patient was to give them oxygen and go fast [to the hospital], or

Thompson emphasized that fire district personnel will only upgrade their response to ALS service when it is necessary.

“The paramedics will make the decision on the scene,” he said.

Thompson said that as of Thursday, paramedics had upgraded two calls during the past four weeks to ALS level.

In both calls paramedics kept the patients alive in the ambulance en route to the hospital. One of the patients lived, while the other died at the hospital, he said.

Thompson acknowledged it will cost the fire district some additional money to offer the ALS service. However, he noted the state’s Property

Tax Extension Limitation – also known as the tax cap – limits the amount the district can increase its property tax levy each year to the rate of inflation or up to 5 percent, whichever is lower.

This past year, the fire district’s property tax rate was 0.3515 cents for every $100 of equalized assessed valuation.

Under that rate, the owner of a home valued at $180,000 in the fire district that did not claim any available exemptions paid $210.90 in property taxes to the fire district.

Thompson said he expects the fire district’s tax rate will increase “1 or 2 cents” this year.

The fire district has offered BLS emergency ambulance services since 1976, according to the agency’s website.

Special Connections prepares thank-yous Participants to team up for thanks kits

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Special Connections of Grundy County wants to say ‘thank-you’ to all its supporters.

On Saturday, participants in the nonprofit that serves individuals with disabilities in Grundy County and surrounding areas will do just that as they gather to make thank-you kits for their biggest contributors.

“We don’t want to say much [about the kits] yet,” Special Connections Executive Director Kelly Thompson said.

“It’s kind of a surprise. But we want to thank those who have given time and support to Special Connections.”

The mission of Special Connections of Grundy County is to connect people with disabilities to their community through social interactions, education, recreational opportunities and shared information. It promotes an environment of inclusion, self-determination and knowledge, according to the website.

Through a growing list of events each year, such as The Dueling Tonys, golf outings and charity basketball games,

various people and agencies have raised money and awareness to help advance Special Connections’ mission.

Thompson said Special Connections feels these supporters have given so much to the cause, and that’s why he said it’s time to flip the script.

“We planned the give-back activity because the community has been so incredibly supportive,” Thompson said.

“We wanted to find a way to give back.”

“Give Back Saturday” is open to those who participate in Special Connections’ programs. They are invited to register for the event at specialconnections.org.

Olsen, who taught a class on the etymology of barbecue, said he’s excited to bring the southern Illinois BBQ influence to Morris.

“We use a cherry and hickory wood combo and cook low and slow,” he said. “I use a rub that I created from the southern Illinois barbecue influences that I think people are going to enjoy.”

OBITUARIES CLARA J. HAUGE Born: March 12, 1920 Died: Jan. 9, 2016

Clara J. Hauge, 95, of Seneca, Illinois passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at Morris Hospital.

Funeral service will be held at 11 am Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, at Stavanger Lutheran Church with Rev. Philip Peterson officiating.

Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m.

Wednesday prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Stavanger Cemetery. Osborne-Nelson Funeral Home has been entrusted with her arrangements.

Clara was born March 12, 1920, in rural Grundy County, Illinois to Peter and Astrid (Anderson) Hausken. She married Mark Hauge Sept. 18, 1938; he passed away in 1989. She worked at Linda Myre Interiors taking apart furniture to be refinished. She was a member of Stavanger Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, and the church choir.

She also helped prepare and served many church dinners. She is known for making her egg coffee, kringla, and her embroidery work. Clara loved to travel and always had her suitcase ready to go somewhere. She loved the Cubs and was disappointed when the Cubs didn’t make it into the World Series.

She is survived by her three children, Mary Ann (Richard) Ewing, Ronald (Miriam) Hauge, Wayne (Janet) Hauge; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey (Vera) Ewing, Gregory (Brenda) Ewing, Kristyn Gilman, Jon (Shalene) Hauge, Sarah Hauge, Paul Hauge, Christopher (Jennifer) Hauge, Jennifer (Justin) Swank and David (Christine) Hauge; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Evelyn Swenhaugen, Shirley Seidler and Helen Baker.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mark; one grandson in infancy, Stephen Hauge; four brothers, Russell, Orville, Earl “Butch” and Norman Hausken; two sisters, Lois Anderson and Doris Olson. Memorials may be directed to Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery or the Seneca Food Pantry.

Legendary musician, songwriter David Bowie dies of cancer at 69

By MESFIN FEKADU The Associated Press NEW YORK – David Bowie, the chameleon-like star who transformed the sound – and the look – of rock with his audacious creativity and his sexually ambiguous makeup and costumes, died of cancer Sunday.

Bowie, whose hits included “Space Oddity,” “Fame,” “Heroes” and “Let’s Dance,” died surrounded by family, representative Steve Martin said early Monday. The singer, who was 69, had fought cancer for 18 months.

Long before alter egos and wild outfits became commonplace in pop, Bowie turned the music world upside down with the release of the 1972 album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” which introduced one of music’s most famous personas. “Ziggy Stardust” was a concept album that imagined a rock star from outer space trying to make his way in the music world.

The persona – the red-headed, eyeliner wearing Stardust – would become an enduring part of Bowie’s legacy, and a touchstone for the way entertainers packaged themselves for years to come.

Bowie’s birthday was Friday, the same day as he released his new album, “Blackstar.”

A statement on social media asked fan’s to respect the family’s privacy. No more details were provided.

Born David Jones in London, the singer came of age in the early 1970s glam rock era.

He had a striking androgynous look in his early days and was known for changing his appearance and sounds. After “Ziggy Stardust,” the stuttering rock sound of “Changes” gave way to the disco soul of “Fame,” co-written with John Lennon, to a droning collaboration with Brian Eno in Berlin that produced “Heroes.”

1996, but he didn’t attend the ceremony. Madonna accepted for him and recounted how a Bowie concert changed her life when she attended it as a teenager. David Byrne, of the art rockers Talking Heads, inducted Bowie and said he gave rock music a necessary shot in the arm.

“Like all rock ‘n’ roll, it was visionary, it was tasteless, it was glamorous, it was perverse, it was fun, it was crass, it was sexy and it was confusing,” Byrne said.

Bowie kept a low profile in recent years after a reported heart attack in the 2000s. He made a moody album three years ago called “The Next Day” – his first recording in a decade. “Blackstar,” which earned positive reviews from critics, represented yet another stylistic shift, as he gathered jazz players to join him.

“David always did it his way and his way was the least obvious way,” said Tony Visconti, Bowie’s longtime producer. “He was a true genius who proved it over and over again through groundbreaking albums.”

Bowie released a music video on Friday for the new song “Lazarus,” which shows a frail Bowie lying in bed and singing the track’s lyrics. The song begins with the line: “Look up here, I’m in heaven.”

On the U.S. iTunes albums chart, which updates frequently throughout the day to reflect digital purchases from users, Bowie’s “Blackstar” peaked at No. 1 on Monday.

“Best of Bowie” was No. 2, and two other Bowie albums reached the Top 10.

His music also has been electrifying audiences this winter in New York in the sold-out new off-Broadway musical “Lazarus,” led by Michael C. Hall of “Dexter” fame and inspired by the 1963 science-fiction novel “The Man Who Fell to Earth.”

A story of death, taxes and breakfast

The group had been having breakfast this way for years. Sometimes there would be more of them, sometimes less; the size of the group at any one day depended on both family and business obligations.

Sometimes they got along, sometimes they didn’t.

But all shared similar values regarding their families and their communities.

“I’m not sure what to do with that property I picked up 25 years ago. I got it dirt cheap. No one wanted it

back then. No one saw what I saw with it,” one said.

“So what’s the problem?

We’d all like that kind of problem,” was the retort.

“The problem is I don’t really feel like paying a boatload of taxes if I sell it.

My kids are pretty successful. And when I die, I still pay a ton of taxes on it,” he said, taking another sip of coffee and unintentionally sharply stabbing at the eggs.

Each stab was unintentionally coordinated every time the word “taxes” was said.

“You’re going to be dead.

Who cares? Besides, we all know that you’re too much of a pain in the backside to die. God would find you annoying. The devil would be concerned you’d take him for all he’s worth,” the other said in response, speaking

with the kind of grin associated with good-natured needling. “You’re destined to wander the earth as a ghost making the rest of us miserable, figuring out more ways to make money.”

In addition to the fork stabbing harder at the eggs, this time the knife was used to cut into the eggs.

As the eggs were scrambled, it wasn’t really necessary.

“You know, there’s a reason your spouse encourages you to get out of the house more often. Anyway, you know how I feel about death and taxes. One I can’t avoid, the other, well, let’s just say, if it’s legal, and there’s a way, I’m all for paying as little as possible.”

While the two continued to entertain the rest of the group, a third chimed in.

Although thoroughly enjoying the exchange, and not averse to stirring things up by throwing a little gas on the fire, this time the person decided to pass along a little bit of information, even though it may put an end to the group’s entertainment.

“I got three words for you. And they aren’t, ‘You’re a yutz,’ ” proving that Yiddish has an appropriate word for every occasion.

“Try these three words: Charitable remainder trust.

It allows you to give something to that one charity that still tolerates you, give something back to this community which despite your Grinch-like nature I know you still care about, and most importantly, get an income for the rest of your life and pay less taxes.”

The fork stopped stabbing at the eggs.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City’s girls basketball team didn’t have any secrets or gimmicks to show off in its 46-19 Interstate Eight Conference win over Wilmington on Monday night.

The Coalers (8-9, 4-2) confronted the Wildcats with a tight defense and a patient and efficient offense to ride to an easy victory.

“What you see is what you get,” Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said after the game.

“We don’t do a whole lot different. We are going to play man-to-man defense in the half court, and we have been doing a much better job with it lately.”

Coal City stifled the Wilmington offense from the start, limiting the Wildcats to only four points in the first quarter and six in the first half en route to a 21-6 halftime lead.

Coal City was able to force the Wildcats into 10 turnovers in the first half and held them to 2-of-11 shooting from the field.

Meanwhile, Coal City’s offensive attack was balanced, as Mackenna Emerson led the way with 13 points and Taylor Meents and Mackenzie Bugg each scored nine. Bridget Kauzlaric added five points, with four each coming from Cali Caruso and Maddie Halliday.

Wilmington had an early lead, with Chloe Lombardi scoring the game’s first basket. Coal City then went on an 8-0 run, getting a bucket by Kauzlaric, a 3-pointer by Emerson and a three-point play

by Bugg. After Lombardi hit a pair of free throws for Wilmington, Coal City’s Kenady Clayburn scored on a putback basket to end the first-quarter scoring.

Coal City’s defense took over from there, nearly holding Wilmington scoreless in the second quarter. Only a basket by Miranda Southall prevented the shutout in the quarter, with :35 to go until halftime. By then, it was 19-6 behind Coal City baskets from Emerson (a 3-pointer), two baskets by Meents and one by Bugg. Bugg scored again just before the halftime buzzer to

Minooka beats Maine South, 6-11 center

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Minooka junior guard Jon Butler admitted, “I’m not going to lie, it was a little boring. But we got the win.”

Butler and Nick Clemmons did the heavy damage in the third quarter, sparking a 9-0 run that gave the Indians a 2719 lead they would not relinquish Monday night en route to a 44-37 victory over Maine South in an off-site opening-round game in the Galesburg MLK Tournament.

The Hawks (12-4) sat in their 2-3 zone, anchored by 6-foot-11-inch, 270-pound center Brad Perry. Minooka (11-5), which is adept at playing good defense and with working the ball on offense until a good shot arrives, was up to the challenge.

“It was a lot slower than most of our games, but it was still fun,” Indians senior forward Joe Butler said.

Butler had the assignment of guarding Perry as much as anyone in the home white,

and he did a credible job. Perry missed his first five shots before hitting his last two and finished with seven points to go with eight rebounds.

“I had to use all my muscle down there against a guy his size,” Joe Butler said. “We tried to put a lot of pressure on him. I’d like to say it was because of us that he struggled to get the ball in the basket.”

“Our defense was outstanding the whole game,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “Keegan Graebner knocked down big shots in fourth quarter and we made our free throws late.

Our kids went with the game plan and stayed with it.”

Tanaka noted that Maine South is a perennial 20-win team, so this qualifies as a huge win.

“We had one day of practice to prepare for them, to go against a defense we aren’t used to seeing,” he said. “Our bench got us ready, and they deserve a lot of credit for this victory. They were huge.”

Minooka led, 9-8, after one quarter and 18-17 at half. After Maine South scored the first

two points of the third quarter, the Indians went on the decisive 9-0 run as the Hawks went more than six minutes without scoring.

Clemmons began the run with a 3-pointer. Jon Butler hit a free throw, Joe Butler tipped home a rebound and Jon Butler hit a layup and free throw after an assist from Joe Butler that followed a Maine South turnover.

The Hawks got back within five points four times in the fourth quarter but never got closer thanks to Graebner’s 3-pointers, Jon Butler setting up Clemmons twice for layups and the Indians’ foul shooting.

Joe Butler finished with 14 points. Clemmons had nine, all in the second half. Larry Roberts chipped in eight, Jon Butler seven and Graebner six. Joe Butler also had six rebounds.

Minooka shot 53.8 percent from the field on 14 of 26. The Indians also were 7 of 11 from 3-point range, with Roberts, Joe Butler, Clemmons and Graebner all joining in the 3-point fest.

Families of Faith rallies for late boys basketball win STAFF REPORT ROMEOVILLE – A big fourth-quarter rally led the Families of Faith Christian Academy boys basketball team to a 41-38 win over Romeoville Christian on Friday night.

The Screaming Eagles (13-6, 7-3) trailed 15-10 at the end of the first quarter, but rebounded to hold a 19-18 lead heading into halftime.

Romeoville Christian, though, came out strong in the third quarter and led 30-24 after three quarters.

That’s when Families of Faith turned it on and outscored Romeoville Christian

17-8 in the fourth quarter to claim the Illinois Christian Conference win.

Cameron Latour led Families of Faith with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while teammates Jordan Welsh (5 rebounds) and Jaylin Barnes (4 steals) each scored nine points and Caleb Blan had six points to go with his four steals.

An aneurysm is an abnormal swelling and weakening in an artery. An aneurysm that occurs in the aorta as it passes through the middle of the body is called an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

Like other blood vessels, the

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff aorta can develop atherosclerosis. Harmful cholesterol-filled plaques form, damaging and weakening the artery wall.

The constant pressure of blood flowing through the aorta – which is worse in people with high blood pressure – can cause the artery’s wall to bulge where there is a weak spot. (I’ve put an illustration on my website, askdoctork.com.)

The majority of AAAs grow very slowly and don’t cause any symptoms. Most AAAs are found by chance during an imaging test performed for

another reason, as yours was.

Rarely, AAAs cause symptoms such as a deep pain or a throbbing sensation in the back or the side of the abdomen. An imaging test – an ultrasound, CT or MRI scan – then is ordered, which reveals the AAA. Because AAAs are quite unusual except in high-risk groups, routine imaging studies are not recommended.

However, in high-risk groups, screening with ultrasound is recommended. People at high risk for an AAA are men ages 65 to 75 who have ever smoked, or who have a first-degree (parent or sibling) relative who has had an AAA repair (or died from a ruptured AAA).

Smaller AAAs are monitored with regular ultrasound

tests. The larger the AAA is, and the faster it grows, the greater the risk that it will rupture. When an AAA ruptures, it causes massive bleeding inside the abdomen. The odds of survival are pretty low. So when an AAA reaches a size that is likely to rupture, it should be repaired.

Until recent years, repair of an AAA involved major surgery. Surgeons opened the abdomen, cut out the diseased section of the aorta, and replaced it with a synthetic tube (typically made of polyester). Today, most AAAs are treated with a minimally invasive procedure known as endovascular repair.

The surgeon passes a catheter through a small incision in the leg and threads it into the aorta

to reach the AAA. A fabric-coated stent is then put in place to reinforce the bulging aorta, which seals around it.

To avoid an AAA, the same advice for preventing heart disease applies: • Don’t smoke; • Eat a healthy diet; • Exercise regularly; • Keep your blood pressure and cholesterol in a healthy range.

These habits are also vital if you already have an AAA, because you’ll want to be as healthy as possible if you end up needing surgery.
