Born: Sept. 2, 1918; in Orient, IL Died: Jan. 8, 2015; in Morris, IL Angela Scerine, age 96, of Coal City, passed away Thursday morning, January 8, 2015, at Park Pointe in Morris.

Born September 2, 1918, in Orient, Illinois, Angelena Margaret was a daughter of the late John W. and Jessie (Morgan) Boggio. She was raised and educated in the West Frankfort, Illinois area and on June 22, 1936, Angela married Richard Thomas Scerine. Together they owned and operated Curley’s Cleaner’s in Coal City for many years. Angela was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Coal City.

Survivors include her children, Richard Scerine of Coal City, William (Lynda) Scerine of Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, Sharon Nicoletti of Fort Myers, Florida and Terry (Celine) Scerine of Brillion, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Angela was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard on January 13, 1979; one sister, Elsie;

and two brothers, Chuck and Jack.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2015, between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block north of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Funeral services will follow Monday morning January 12th at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Reverend Robert Noesen from Assumption Catholic Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Braidwood, where Angela will be laid to rest with her late husband Richard.

Preferred memorials in lieu of flowers may be made as gifts in Angela’s memory to Joliet Area Community Hospice, 250 Water Stone Circle, Joliet, Illinois 60431.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is encouraging women ages 21 and older to speak with their physician about cervical cancer screening and prevention this month – “Cervical Health Awareness Month.”

Cervical cancer forms in the tissues of the cervix. Cervical cancer is almost always caused by human papillomavirus infection. Fortunately, with regular screenings and follow-up, this form of cancer is easily preventable and highly treatable when detected in its early stage, according to a news release.

“We recommend women have their first routine cervical screening at age 21,” said IDPH Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck. “I also encourage women, along with young girls (ages 11 to 13) and their

parents, to ask their health care provider about HPV vaccines, which are highly effective at preventing certain forms of HPV.” There are often no noticeable symptoms of cervical cancer in its early stage, which is why it is important for women to be screened regularly. Symptoms usually develop when the cancer has become invasive and attacks nearby tissue. The most common symptom is abnormal vaginal bleeding. Although cervical cancer usually grows slowly, it can be detected with regular Ppap tests.

The Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program provides free cervical cancer screenings to uninsured and underinsured Illinois women between the ages of 35 and 64, regardless of income. For information, call the health line at 1-888-522-1282.

COAL CITY – The Office of Congressman Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, will hold traveling office hours this month throughout the 16th District, including in Coal City.

Staffers will be available to assist and provide guidance for constituents on issues ranging from veterans and Social Security benefits to Medicare and immigration issues. Constituents are welcome to come to share their questions and concerns. No appointments are necessary.

The staff will be in Coal City from 9 to 10 a.m. Jan. 21 at the Coal City Village Hall, 515 S. Broadway St., Coal City.

Those who cannot attend the traveling office hours, but have questions can call the Ottawa District Office at 815-431-9271.

MORRIS – A special display of dolls collected over the past 20 years by Rosalie Jostes will be on exhibit at the Grundy County Historical Society Museum through the end of February.

The dolls now on display at the Grundy County Historical Society Museum represent about a quarter of Jostes’ collection.

They range from the Civil War period to the 1950s.

The display will run through the end of February at the Grundy County Historical Society Museum at the Canal Port Community Center, 510 W. Illinois Ave., Morris. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Annual meeting held Thursday in Dwight

By JEAN TYRELL Shaw Media Correspondent DWIGHT – At the meeting celebrating its 100th year, the Grundy County Farm Bureau looked to the future and to the past.

Its annual meeting was held Thursday at the Country Mansion in Dwight where Farm Bureau members commended the programs, youth scholars and honored members for their contributions; the group also looked back at the history of farming in Grundy County.

President Steve Kodat said the organization aims to have “everyone coming together to promote agriculture.”

At the program, attended by about 85 people, the group heard reports on the past year’s activities, which included an August celebration at the Terry and Carol Seggebruch farm in Morris, Ag in the Classroom activities and a legislative update. A special report was given on how agriculture has changed in the past 100 years.

“If we could transport a farmer from 1900 through time to a large farm today, that farmer would not recognize much of what he saw,” said guest speaker Donna Sroczynski, president of the Grundy County Historical Society.

One of the differences, she said, was the number of people involved in agriculture. In 1900, she said, 41 percent of the workforce was employed on farms.

By 2000, only about 2 percent of the national workforce was employed in agriculture.

Sroczynski read from a 1914 edition of the Morris Daily Herald and noted hoof and mouth disease was having a damaging effect on cattle and pigs populations at that time. She said farmers were ordered to destroy their herds to prevent the spread of the disease.

As a result of mechanization, farms today are much larger, Sroczynski said. A typical farm 100 years ago may

Today, farm holdings of 500-plus acres are much more common.

One of the problems with having fewer people involved in agriculture, according to Kodat, is that less of the country’s population knows about farming and fewer farmers means less members for organizations like the farm bureau.

He said farm groups need to educate the public through programs like Ag in the Classroom and by bringing nonfarm families to see farm operations.

The district director for the Illinois Farm Bureau, Scott Halpin, echoed Kodat’s sentiment.

The group honored Terry and Carol Seggebruch of Morris as Outstanding Farm Bureau members. Besides hosting the summer celebration, the Seggebruchs have a mini museum of agricultural history at their farm.

Zelko was named Friend of the Farm Bureau. Zelko has volunteered her time with Ag Jeopardy, the Woman’s Committee, the cookbook project and the Ladies Garden, among others.

Perry Harlow, who interned with the Grundy Farm Bureau, was issued a commendation.

Foundation scholarship recipients, currently in college or higher education settings, also were acknowledged.

They include Austin Granby, Mackinzie Granby, Cory Kodat, Kaitlyn Harlow, Perry Harlow, Trevor Lines, Luke Severson, Seth Severson and Trent Zelko.

At the meeting, Howard Huntley, Brent Baker, Sara Mitchell and Tammy Halterman were elected to the Grundy Farm Bureau Board of Directors for three-year terms.

Life skills house on county property discussed further Attorneys will discuss proposals

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Officials continued this week to discuss whether a life skills house for special education students should be built on county property.

The Grundy County Law & Justice/Facilities Committee heard a presentation Thursday by the Grundy County Special Education Cooperative during its regular meeting.

It proposes construction of a life skills house for special education students next to the Grundy County Administration building on county property.

The committee asked the cooperative to have its lawyers get in touch with the state’s attorney’s office to

work on proposed plans so the board could move forward.

Neil Sanburg, the cooperative’s executive director; Pat Halloran, Grundy Area Vocational Center board chairman; and Lance Copes, GAVC director, presented a video along with drawings for the life skills house.

Sanburg told the committee that while it is referenced as a “home,” it is really a school. Consideration has been given to what the building would be used for if the cooperative no longer has a use for it.

“In the future, if it is not a school, it can be utilized as office space,” he said. “It could easily be converted down the road.”

If the house is built, it would be used as a nontraditional, community-based classroom and allow special education students to learn skills such as cooking, cleaning and paying bills.

21 who are involved in the cooperative’s REACH transition program would use the building during school hours.

There are typically between 15 and 20 students in the program.

The cooperative and GAVC have partnered for the project, so students who attend GAVC’s building and trade class can build the home, as they have historically done with homes in Morris.

Copes said the center needs to know soon if the county will approve the class building the site on county property so preparations can be made for the foundation to be poured over the summer. That way, when school starts, students can begin building.

viously discussed using a grassy area directly south of the county administration building as a location for the house after Chris Mehochko, regional superintendent, introduced the idea in November.

He made the suggestion after a proposal for a house in the Fields of Saratoga subdivision was withdrawn after community objections.

State’s Attorney Jason Helland said his main concern is what the county had originally planned for the property, including once discussing the treasurer and clerk offices moving to the property.

County Board Chairman David Welter said he originally had the same concerns, but the county owns property at

the administration building, the 911 center and near the courthouse, so the space is no longer a concern for him.

Sanburg said they would be interested in doing a longterm lease with the county for the property, much like GAVC has with Morris Community High School and the Special Education Cooperative has with the Morris Elementary School District.

Committee Member Debra Jo Kinsella said there is no doubt the proposal is a good idea for the kids, but the board needs time, which GAVC doesn’t have a lot of.

Halloran said Friday that GAVC and the cooperative would need to know about the property by mid-April for construction purposes.

Grundy County lawmakers taking wait-and-see approach on Rauner

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com With a Democrat-controlled Legislature in Springfield and a Republican governor taking over Monday, local lawmakers hope for anything but a four-year standoff.

State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, said Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner has “set a tone” of bipartisanship.

“He really wants to work with all parties involved,” Anthony said.

But several Democrats are waiting to see how many campaign promises Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner will be able to keep – such as increased spending for education paired with lowered taxes.

“I’m looking forward, and I say this sincerely, to see how he is going to do this. If he’s moving in the right direction to help our state, I’m more than willing to support his budget,” Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Plainfield, said. “But he’s been very vague.

We haven’t seen anything.”

Last month, Rauner said he found the state’s budget is “worse” than previously pub-

licized the more he delves into the details. He argued Democrats covered up what he called “broken and dishonest” money management when they passed a budget last year that relied on borrowing and high spending.

Bertino-Tarrant said she thinks Democrats “made it very clear” in passing the budget last year that the income tax needed to be maintained at the higher rate to continue paying down bills and pension obligations.

But there was not enough support – from either side of the aisle – to prevent it from sunsetting as scheduled Jan. 1.

Anthony said Rauner hasn’t given him any indication on how he plans to move forward with the budget or the income tax.

“I don’t want to speculate,” Anthony said. “He hasn’t given us a head nod as to which way he’s going to go. We’ll find out a lot when he gives his budget address. ... What I do know is we don’t have a revenue problem.

We have a spending problem.”

Others don’t see it that way.

Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said he’s concerned about the shape the state’s finances will be in next year. The income tax –

which rolled back as scheduled Jan. 1 – is expected to blow a $4 billion hole in next year’s budget.

“At the end of the day, it’s going to be the governor and it’s his party that’s going to be writing the proposals,” Walsh Jr. said. “It’s no longer a one-party government in Illinois. [Republicans] liked blaming [Democrats] for everything. [Republicans] liked to vote no, but now anything that passes will have to be on a bipartisan basis.”

Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said he’s equally concerned, noting his priorities next year will be “pensions and taxes.”

Rauner is expected to push forward changes to the state’s tax policies, some of which he discussed during the campaign.

Both McGuire and Walsh Jr. said they are “open to” broadening the tax base and updating the tax code, but that it would all depend on the details.

Walsh Jr. said he’d also like to push for a long-debated graduated income tax, where higher incomes are subject to higher tax rates, but such a change would take time and require amending the state’s constitution.

Objections filed against candidates for 9 Gardner Fire Protection District Board

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com GARDNER – A Gardner Fire Protection District Board candidate has filed an objection against two opponents in the April 7 election.

There are two positions available on the board: one for a four-year term and the other for a six-year term.

Barbara Baker, running for the six-year term, has filed objections to the petitions of Todd Perkins and Michael Pasternak, who also are running for the six-year term.

Incumbent John Hollmeyer is running for the four-year term.

Baker filed objections against her competitors, alleging their nomination petitions are “insufficient in law and in fact,” according to the documents.

The Grundy County Electoral Board is scheduled to meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Grundy County Courthouse’s law library on the objections.

The board is made up of Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson, State’s Attorney Jason Helland and Circuit Clerk Karen Slattery.

The objection claims the petition paperwork failed to follow election code in numerous ways, including that Perkins did not securely fasten his sheets, and listed the wrong office that he is running for.

According to the documents, Baker claims Perkins indicated he was running for Gardner village trustee, not the Gardner Fire Protection District. The objection also claims that Pasternak failed to file a Statement of Economic Interests with the Grundy County clerk.

Baker has asked for Perkins and Pasternak’s names not to be printed on the April 7 ballot.

Ottawa resident wins $1M in lotto MORRIS DAILY HERALD OTTAWA – On Christmas Day, Ottawa resident Bonnie Gama got the best Christmas gift she has ever received – a winning lottery ticket.

Gama scratched a $10 Million Cash Bonanza lottery ticket and instantly won $1 million.

“This is the most exciting Christmas I’ve ever had!,” Gama said in a news release, when she presented her winning ticket at the Illinois Lottery Prize Center in Rockford.

This week Lottery officials presented her a $1 million ceremonial check.

Gama, 67, has two children, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She celebrated Christmas at her daughter’s house in Grand Ridge.

On her way home, she stopped for gas and decided to treat herself to a $10 Million Cash Bonanza ticket, a $30 instant ticket with three top prizes of $10 million and 15 $1 million prizes. Gama was in her car when she scratched the ticket and realized she had won.

“I rushed right back to my daughter’s house to show everyone my ticket and we even took pictures of it. None of us could believe I won $1 million!,” she said in the news release.

When asked about her plans for the windfall she said she will pay bills, invest and maybe take a vacation.

Rauner must overhaul state Bruce Rauner has said he plans to live in Illinois’ 160-year-old executive mansion during the first legislative session of his tenure as governor, even though the historic building is in need of major renovations.

Much like the historic building Rauner plans to occupy, the government he will lead starting Monday when he becomes the state’s 42nd governor also is in dire need of renovations.

Rauner, a Republican, will not be able to do it alone.

Democrats are firmly in control of both houses of the Legislature. Rauner’s challenge will be in making legislative leaders understand that Illinois must become more business friendly. That they must make hard choices to set our financial house in order. That they must give Illinois the government it can afford, not the government they think people want.

Voters agreed with Rauner when he said he wanted the temporary income tax increase of 2011 to roll back as scheduled this year.

Illinoisans are now keeping more of their money. There should be no backtracking on that.

However, the state needs a budget that is truly balanced. This year’s budget plan, which lasts through June, counted on the income tax increase being made permanent, and analysts have pegged the estimated shortfall at somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 billion.

Next year’s budget could be $5 billion short.

Meanwhile, more than 10 percent of state employees had salaries greater than

Rauner shouldn’t be expected to fix this overnight, but we would like to see a long-term plan to align state spending with revenue.

It will require sacrifice, as well as streamlining, and the onus is on Rauner to ensure it is done in an equitably.

Rauner also must provide leadership on the issue of Illinois’ troubled public employee pension funds, with unfunded obligations to employees that now top $110 billion. Rauner’s predecessor, Pat Quinn, provided no leadership on this issue, which demands a new approach.

Leadership need not mean going it alone – it’s important to include stakeholder voices in the planning.

Unions, whose members rely on these pension funds for their security, should be invited to participate, or any future proposal will end up in court, too.

There are many other issues, too. Cronyism is alive and well in state hiring.

Though they’ve fallen, the state’s workers compensation rates remained seventh-highest in the nation in 2014, highest of any state in the Midwest. The state continues to prorate its financial aid to public schools and universities, leading to budget deficits and high property taxes.

Unlike his predecessors Pat Quinn and Rod Blagojevich, we hope Rauner makes Springfield his home while he serves as governor.

There are plenty of issues there to keep him busy.

Why the attacks on Scalise misfired Democrats have tried to rev up the outrage machine over news that Rep. Steve Scalise, the No. 3 ranking House Republican, may or may not have given a speech to a white supremacist group in Louisiana 12 years ago.

Not only has the Democratic Party attacked Scalise himself, it also has gone after the House GOP leadership and, now, the 2016 Republican presidential field.

The sin of Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, et al, according to the Democratic National Committee, is that they have not been quick enough to denounce behavior that – it’s worth repeating – may or may not have happened more than a decade ago.

“Do you really think it’s appropriate to have Rep. Scalise remain a part of Republican leadership, or will you let your silence speak volumes?” the DNC said to the Republican 2016 field on New Year’s Eve. “Just like last year with Cliven Bundy, and the Duck Dynasty crew just months before,

can get pretty harsh, as Bill Clinton and George W. Bush will attest. But when Obama has been on the receiving end of harsh criticism, some of his supporters have not hesitated to interpret the situation in racial terms, accusing Republicans of attacking Obama because he is black. The sheer frequency of this has made Republicans wary of Democrats playing the race card. And that is the background of the Scalise controversy; the same instinct behind the portrayal of Republicans as racist for criticizing Obama is now behind attacks on the GOP over Scalise. Republicans are tired of it.

The facts always matter.

If new, previously unknown facts appear that cast Scalise’s actions in a different light, then the GOP calculation will change. But unless that happens, don’t expect Republicans to surrender this time.

Pace discussed the salary cap situation in New Orleans, and keeping up with the theme of a “group effort,” explained how he’ll rely on Phillips and (Vice President of Football Administration) Cliff Stein for some of the team’s business-football decisions.

“The salary cap? That’s not my background. I wanted these guys to know who I am. I come from an evaluation background. That’s my strength,” he said. “I think being a good GM is knowing your strengths and weaknesses, right? So I know Cliff Stein is here. I know Ted is here. And again, I’m going to lean on them to help me with that. And I’ll learn. Hey, my work ethic, that’s one thing that’s never been questioned. So if I need to improve in the salary-cap end of the business, I’m all on board with it. I know Cliff and Ted will help me.”

LAKE FOREST – Not even a minute into Ryan Pace’s introductory news conference Friday as the Bears’ general manager did social media revolt against the franchise.

“Ryan is going to oversee the entire football operation,” team president Ted Phillips said as he introduced Pace.

OK, that was fine, but Phillips then added, “He is going to report directly to me, the head coach will report directly to Ryan.”

Anyone who had pipe dreams of Phillips’ role reducing didn’t take kindly to the introduction, but the focus should be on what Phillips said first, Ryan not second, and Pace something that was emphasized throughout Friday’s media session – the Bears are Pace’s team now, with some front-office collaborating.

“The 53-man roster, to answer your question, yes,” Pace said when asked about control. “But my experience in New Orleans, the relationship between the head coach and general manager, that’s critical. So is the head coach and the quarterback. Those are the two most important relationships in the building.

“In my 15 years in New Orleans, I’ve never seen Mickey (Loomis) and Sean (Payton) come to a major argument on something like that. And what’s the reason for that?

Because they have a great relationship. They talk every single day. All those decisions, those are all hashed out because we’re communicating in the relationship we have.

That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

Coalers use fast start to get past Irish

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – Coal City’s first Interstate Eight Conference girls basketball game of 2015 produced the same result as the last four it played in 2014 – a Coal City victory.

After building a 26-4 lead late in the second quarter, the Coalers coasted to a 46-37 I-8 victory over host Seneca on Friday in the matinee of a girls-boys varsity doubleheader.

The Coalers are 6-5 in nonconference play after losing Tuesday to Providence, 53-27, but Coal City is now 5-0 this season in conference games.

“Right now our focus is winning conference, so we try not to look at our out-of-conference record and just focus on what’s here in front of us,” Coal City guard Mady Bunton said. “This week of practice we’ve been working really hard because coming off a few losses,] we knew what we had to work on. That was our main focus coming into this game – to really hit it hard the first few minutes, so that worked out – the first part of the game, anyway.”

A Bunton jumper 19 seconds in elevated the Coalers into the lead for good, and that lead grew rapidly throughout the first half. Senior Nicole Borgetti made five 3-pointers before Seneca scored its second basket.

“It’s kind of what we’ve been trying to tell our kids for years past – you gotta try to start fast,” Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. “Especially on the road. It’s tough to get the road wins. We came out, we ran some nice sets. Nicole was actually on fire the first half, and we just kept trying to feed her the ball.”

Summer finally showed up and I pushed the scars of last winter to the back of my

Back to this month. I dreaded going to bed and waking up to the fresh snow Tuesday morning.

The weather expert’s predictions hovered anywhere from three to a possibility of six inches of accumulation, with more locally. Great.

Every few minutes I checked the window. Nothing. Nothing. Uh-oh. A flurry. Wonderful, it’s starting.

Just before I hit the sack for the night I figured I better take the dog out one last time. I pulled on the boots, zipped up the Carhartt and opened the door.

The white stuff dropped from the sky. I felt a

scrooge-like scowl occupy my face. I stepped into the flakes of furry and the dog followed. As I waited for her to go, something struck me.

Or more exact, the lack of something struck me.

The world sat suspended in absolute silence. A giant muffle made of cotton apparently covered everything and created a fascinating environment to be standing in. In fact, the only noise that could be heard was the snow falling and resting on the ground. The cold temperatures created dry flakes that shimmered in the moonlight as they descended from the heavens. In fact, my oldest son commented that it looked like silver glitter falling from the sky.

He nailed it. It did.

The dog completed her task and pulled back toward the house. I stayed still. My curiosity wasn’t ready to go back inside.

I’m not sure how long I stood out there and enjoyed the snow coming down. Five minutes? 10? Time became irrelevant.

For this brief moment, everything in the world rearranged itself into an order that made sense. I enjoyed this calm immensely.

I laughed at myself when the time finally came to crawl back to the warmth of the house.

For several days I dreaded this snowfall and let it fill my mind with nightmares.

Up until this week, this winter hasn’t amounted to a whole lot. Sure, we had one cold snap early on, but December came and went without the ordeal we went through last year.

Then the weather reports started to proclaim the first real arctic blast of the season. On Sunday before bed I noticed snow forecast for Monday evening and bitter temperatures by Wednesday. Could the repeat of last winter finally be upon us?

I have to be completely honest, winter really has never bothered me that much. That is until last year. When I finally emerged in the spring after months of agonizing temperatures, I was done.

More than one time the thought occurred to me to start perusing real estate ads somewhere south. Like maybe in the Bahamas. One horrible morning I even contemplated leaving the house keys on the mailbox for

When the dummy comes down, declarer’s first thought is probably that he can win 12 tricks via one spade, six hearts, three diamonds and two clubs. But that requires finding the diamond queen. If he takes the diamond finesse the wrong way, he will go down. Is there something preferable?

No doubt you are unsurprised to learn that there is a better situation.

South should first try to establish a third club winner. However, to do that, he needs to find clubs splitting 4-3 and to have three dummy entries: two for club ruffs and one to cash the 13th club. What are those dummy doors?

They have to be one club and two diamonds. But how can declarer get those two diamond doors if East has the queen?

After drawing trumps, declarer plays a club to dummy’s king, cashes the club ace and ruffs a club in his hand. If the clubs break 5-2 or worse, South must guess who holds the diamond queen, presumably playing the opponent short in clubs for that card.

However, when clubs divide 4-3, declarer next runs his diamond 10.

Here, East wins the trick, but now South has his necessary dummy doors: the diamond ace and jack.

Maintain healthy eating habits during menopause Dear Doctor K: Does menopause cause weight gain?

Dear Reader: In the United States, women typically go through menopause between 47 and 59 years of age. And the average woman gains about one pound per year around the time of menopause. Not surprisingly, we tend to assume that menopause causes weight gain.

Research suggests that there is no direct link between menopause and weight gain. But menopause may play an indirect role.

For example, poor sleep can lead to weight gain. And many menopausal women have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Lack of sleep may alter the hormones that regulate hunger. If you’re not

Stress can also play a role in weight gain. At menopause, the body stops making the hormone estrogen. This reduces the body’s ability to regulate the hormone cortisol, which helps to manage stress. Higher cortisol levels may trigger an increase in appetite.

Other changes that occur around the same time as menopause may also contribute to weight gain. As women age, muscle mass decreases

and fat mass increases. This slows metabolism. As a result, the body burns off fewer calories than it did previously.

Many women’s eating patterns change around menopause, due to other changes in their lives. When children move out of the house, some women may no longer cook or eat dinner regularly. Eating infrequently or skipping meals can slow metabolism, further interfering with your body’s ability to burn calories.

There’s another reason that eating patterns start to change around menopause, when kids move out of the house. I’ve had several patients who told me that they always prepared healthy meals when they had kids at

home. They knew that what kids ate as children could affect their health in later years. But when the kids left, and they were cooking only for themselves and their spouses, they started preparing higher-calorie meals, with less healthy foods.

Many women also change how they carry their weight around menopause. Fat tends to move from the hips to the abdomen (belly). Even if this shift in fat stores does not cause an increase in weight, increased abdominal fat does increase the risk of many serious health conditions. These include heart disease, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.

If you find yourself gaining weight at midlife, refocus on

the basics: • Eat a healthful diet.

• Practice portion control.

• Eat at regular intervals and avoid skipping meals.

• Be physically active.

• Find ways to manage your stress.

• Get enough sleep.

These tips may help you to maintain your weight. Even better, they may help you lose weight before, during and after menopause. Avoiding excess weight gain will lower your risks of diabetes and heart disease. It also will help you to live a more healthful life.
