“The minute my veins showed up again, I knew I was pregnant�

A

s only a mother can understand, pregnancy can ask a lot of your body. While there may be a few things that seem important to have done medically after child birth, it’s not uncommon for the needs of most mothers to be last on their “to do listâ€?. Usually, by the time most get around to it, their children are off to college, and some of the beneďŹ ts of treating yourself while younger have lost its luster. Although having a few more hours of sleep or missing a workout may seem trivial, one thing shouldn’t be overlooked- your health- particularly when it involves proper blood ow to your heart.

Besides more obvious symptoms associated with pregnancy (weight gain, lack of energy), it’s important to know that if you have given birth you may also have underlying issues of vein disease. Additionally, if you have other risk factors that may contribute to developing varicose veins (e.g. heredity, standing all day) there is a signiďŹ cant chance that your varicose veins will not go away after childbirth.

Pregnancy and Vein Disease

One of the most prevalent risk factors in developing varicose veins results from the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy, and the increases in estrogen, progesterone, and relaxin. These hormones breakdown the interior lining of the veins making them weaker and causing them to expand, eventually prohibiting their proper function of pumping blood back to the heart. In addition, the body works overtime to produce enough blood to grow the newly developing fetus, increasing the pressure on the veins.

When the veins become damaged in this manner, the increased pressure causes the blood to pool in the legs and ankles creating swelling and pain. Furthermore, research has shown that the more pregnancies a woman has the more likely she is to develop varicose veins.

Myth: Finish Having Children Before Treating Your Varicose Veins

While it may be common to hear your doctor say that you should wait until you are done having children before treating your veins, the truth is you may be getting the wrong advice.Historically, this proved true as a result methods nof w hinadequate e r a l d . c o mand /m apainful g a z i n treatment e

like ‘vein stripping’ which frequently led to recurrence. However, modern advancements have not only led to safer procedures, but have signiďŹ cantly reduced the recurrence rate to less than 2% by treating varicose veins at their source.

Unfortunately, most of these mothers were told the same thing by their doctor and shared very similar stories. Some didn’t actually notice any symptoms during their ďŹ rst pregnancy, but during the second they were very noticeable, suffering from tired achy legs that woke them at night, in addition to large bulging varicose and spider veins. Denise mentions, “Looking back I didn’t realize how tired I always felt, I just thought it was a natural part of getting older‌I originally had vein stripping, but that didn’t resolve the problem, and my veins got worse with each pregnancy, lots of protruding veins, pain, and swelling.â€?

While you may incur similar symptoms if you have more children, the misconception is that treating your veins along the way doesn’t necessarily help the process. When your veins become damaged as the result of venous disease they cannot be ďŹ xed, only removed.

That’s why if you don’t treat them before your next pregnancy the pain and suffering will only increase as will your vein disease. In actuality, your Obstetrician should recommend you seek evaluation from a board certiďŹ ed Phlebologist before becoming pregnant, which would actually help prevent a lot of the unnecessary symptoms of vein disease. Alternatively, if a woman anticipates becoming pregnant in the future and has suffered signiďŹ cantly from vein problems in a previous pregnancy, that she schedule a consultation to reduce the pain and swelling during the next pregnancy.

Kristin, was treated after her second child, and her third, but noticed that while the pain and swelling came back she at least reduced the pain in-between her pregnancies and decreased pressure in her third pregnancy. In fact, when asked if she would have waited until she was done having children before getting the procedure, she stated, “I wouldn’t wait, the pressure from my second one was so painful, I

Stay Active. Using your muscles helps the veins pump blood to the heart thereby reducing pressure, pain, and swelling. Jill agreed saying, “I felt like my legs were not as painful during the second pregnancy as I ran often.� Kristin stated, “I felt that this really helped my circulation, my legs didn’t seem swollen after a run.�

Compression Stockings. Compression is a great way to help increase circulation and alleviate swelling and pain. Heather being a huge advocate stated, “I used to roll out of bed and put on my support hose every day, I probably couldn’t function without them.�

Kristin agreed, “My legs would be in so much pain if I forgot to wear them when I was pregnant.�

Keep a Healthy Weight. It’s often impossible during pregnancy to maintain your current size, but keeping a healthy weight will signiďŹ cantly reduce the pressure on your legs and ankles.

As Jill recalls, “I gained a little too much weight during my ďŹ rst pregnancy, and I can remember having to put my feet up a lot, but I kept a better weight and stayed active during the second one and it really makes a difference.â€?

Stay Informed. It is important to know that vein disease is a real disease, and requires medical intervention whether or not you have pain.

Tracey, did not notice her veins as they weren’t visible. However, reading how pregnancy can result in varicose veins she decided to get a consult and was informed by Dr. Rivard that one leg was in fact a 1/2 inch bigger in her ankle and 3/4 inch bigger in her thigh due to the swelling of her veins. In addition, for breastfeeding mothers, the great news is that both the treatment of varicose and spider veins are FDA approved, and the solution used during sclerotherapy is non-toxic, and can simply be pumped out after treatment, allowing breast feeding within 6 hours.

Crisp: Delivering flowers is one of my favorite parts of this job. Studies out of Harvard and Rutgers University show the health benefits of flowers — lifting depression, helping with seasonal affective disorder, helping speed healing in the sick — people who wake up with flowers on their nightstand are more likely to wake up happy and have a better day. Green plants are shown to increase productivity in the workplace by cleaning the air and promoting wellbeing.

I couldn’t ask for a better industry to work in, the support from my colleagues and even competitors is just fantastic. It’s an industry that brings beauty and joy to people. Who doesn’t love that?

Woodstock floral designer Elizabeth Crisp has been making the community more beautiful and more colorful for nearly a decade. She took a few moments with us to talk about her business, Apple Creek Flowers, and why she loves what she does.

MCM: What’s your favorite flower?

MCM: How long has your business been open?

Did you work in the industry prior to venturing out on your own?

Elizabeth Crisp: Apple Creek Flowers has been serving McHenry County for 30 years, although I just recently celebrated nine years of ownership. I have a strong background in retail, so it was a logical choice given my passion as a gardener. Apple Creek Weddings is my newest project. We have always designed wedding flowers, but I felt it was important to emphasize that part of the business, to showcase that we can design custom wedding flowers, from bouquets, to reception and ceremony décor. I was fortunate to attend a master bridal class in London, opening a whole new world on design styles and trends in the bridal industry. It was fascinating.

Crisp: If I had to pick one flower it would be a double peony. The variety called ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ is perfection.

MCM: Why Woodstock?

Crisp: Location, location, location! I worked for the previous owner while I was attending McHenry County College earning my floral design certification. I love the small town charm of Woodstock, the feeling of community is unmatched. It’s truly a special town.

MCM: What is the best part of owning your own business?

Crisp: Realizing my vision and achieving a level of service through dedication and hard work with the help of my team. To watch Apple Creek’s growth is the ultimate in fulfillment and job satisfaction. I am blessed with a team of talented designers who express their style with WOMEN & CAREER

flowers and understand the extraordinary level of service we’ve become known for.

MCM: What would you most like our readers to know about you and your business?

Crisp: I was certified as a Master Gardener in New Jersey through Rutgers University Extension Program. I love being able to pass my knowledge on to my curious customers.

MCM: In your role, you have the unique opportunity to be a part of people’s lives at some of the highest, and lowest moments. Does that emotional connection play a role in how you operate your business?

Crisp: Being a florist is a special occupation.

I don’t sell flowers. I help people express their emotions. I’ve cried with grieving families, hugged new grandparents and helped brides select flowers to transform their special day.

Being there to help my customers with their tragedy or triumph is what makes it so special.

I had the pleasure of “conspiring” with six grandchildren of a Woodstock resident who was turning 95. They all wanted to send flowers, a total of 95 stems, in six different colors. I spoke to each one and we came up with six designs to mark the day. I delivered the flowers at intervals, all day. She was delighted and I took a picture of her at the end of the day, to send to all of the grandchildren, surrounded by all of her flowers.

It was so much fun!

It’s a unique opportunity to connect on a more personal level with my customers. It’s not work if you love what you do!

‘Blowing out’ the hair industry Pepper Annex is bringing L.A. to Crystal Lake with trendy blowouts and earth-friendly practices

rystal Lake may not be L.A. or New York City, but that doesn’t mean a little bit of L.A. and New York City can’t be in Crystal Lake.

At least, that’s the thought behind Pepper Annex, a hip new business that, for the last year, has hoisted the local hair industry to the next level.

It also touts itself as an environmentallyfriendly blow-dry bar, meaning it provides customers with earth-friendly products and one of the latest trends in the industry: professional blowouts.

“[We’re here] to make people feel special,” Hall says.

Bringing L.A. to C.L.

The short explanation of a blowout is this: clients receive a massaging shampoo and have their hair blown into style without the extra costs of a cut or color, Hall says.

Hall always had wanted her own salon, but the idea to open a dual salon/blow-dry bar actually came from the 27-year-old’s father, Bill Hall.

Neither stylist wanted to fully give up coloring and cutting hair, so their business model of blending a traditional salon with a blow-dry bar has worked well, they say. Clients can get a cut or color whenever they choose, and when they want a blowout for a special event, their same stylist can help them enjoy a few quiet moments of pampered bliss.

“[Our clients] love the whole family atmosphere and how everybody is so friendly and how they can completely escape reality in a way and just relax,” says stylist Anna Golebiewska, 27, of Lake “He owns a business, and he is fortunate in the Hills. “All of us enough that he gets to travel all over the love what we do, and I think that shows in place,” Hall says, noting those travels include our work and in our personalities. “The salon that I had was very small and very intimate ... this is probably three or four times the size of the salon that I had …

[Pepper Annex] was a lot of responsibility, and a complete change of lifestyle … [but] it’s just a very exciting atmosphere … and I was at a place in my life where I needed a challenge and a change.”

“Marie and I are very health conscious, and we care about our employees and our guests who come in,” Hall says. “We want to protect our environment, and it’s better for us because we work in [a traditionally chemicalbased industry] all day.”

Pepper Annex uses products free of many of the additives found in traditional salon lines, and the business supports companies that share similar environmental and social values, Hatfield-Logan says.

The Australian-based line Kevin Murphy, for example, is an ambassador for climate change, and the company only uses containers that are 100 percent recyclable. Unite’s Professional Hair Care Products, meanwhile, contain no monoethanolamine (MEA) or diethanolamine (DEA), chemicals linked to cancer.

Both lines use premium-grade products and are PETA-certified, Hatfield-Logan says. They contain no parabens (preservatives) or sulfates (chemicals also linked to cancer), healthier choices for stylists and clients.

Though following an environmentallyconscious business platform is important to both Hall and Hatfield-Logan, the initial fire behind such a movement stems from a much more personal matter.

Hall has lupus, an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks normal, healthy tissue.

“That started my health kick,” Hall says.

“I’m gluten free. I eat organic. I’m soy free.

I’m very aware of every single thing I’m putting into my body. Even lotion is something I think about. Your skin is the largest organ of your body, so much of what you apply topically will be absorbed into your blood stream.”

Her life change has spilled over into her business for precisely that reason — shampoos, hair dyes and other products she and her fellow stylists use on a daily basis are being absorbed not only into their clients’ skin, but theirs, as well.

n 2012, McHenry County Magazine began a tradition of honoring women who have given their time and talents to the community. They have created nonprofit organizations, commanded local advisory boards, volunteered at activities and businesses outside their own workplaces and, most of all, continue to lead by example.

Each spring, we solicit nominations from community leaders, local business professionals and our own readership. And through this process, we discover our communities full of inspiring women; teachers and nurses, entrepreneurs and advisors, artists and volunteers.

This month, we continue the tradition with the 2015 class of McHenry County Magazine’s Women of Distinction.

We introduce our honorees here, pay tribute to them at an annual event, and in each month that follows, we will tell the complete story of one of these outstanding local residents.

No Mountain Too High Mother of autistic child overcomes challenges, starts school from scratch

hen Kelly Weaver adopted her daughter, Gillian, in 1998, she had no idea she eventually would co-found a school for children with autism

“We outgrew it very quickly,” Weaver said.

Today, she is the executive director of the Alexander Leigh Center for Autism in Crystal Lake.

At first, Gillian was hitting all her milestones, Weaver said. However, at 15 months, Weaver noticed Gillian was falling behind other children in her playgroups. It wasn’t until 2000 that Gillian, who now is 16, was diagnosed with regressive autism.

In 2008, the Illinois State Board of Education approved it as a school. “It was kind of like writing your thesis … and then defending it,” Weaver said of the process.

After the center doubled in size, even more growth prompted a move to Crystal Lake, where the center has been for the past 3½ years.

The nonprofit center first opened as a clinic in Weaver’s home and moved in 2007 to a 2,500-square-foot space in Lake in the Hills.

“This summer we maxed out, and so we moved our administrative office,” Weaver said of the center that employs 74 and serves 37 children ages 3 to 18.

Weaver had become acquainted with another mother, Dorie Hoevel, with an autistic son who was in Gillian’s playgroup.

“By the time she was 2, we had a formal diagnosis,” said Weaver. She and her husband, Kevin, then researched and created a support system for their daughter. “We developed a program in our home and did some homeschooling.”

They shared a one-to-one instructor, who recognized that the mothers shared similar frustrations about the education system.

Unexpected challenges arose. Weaver was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2001. About two years later, Kevin was diagnosed with brain cancer.

The women met for Chinese food and talked about how they might better serve their autistic children.

“On top of that, my mom, who was my rock, had a massive stroke in March 2004,” Weaver said.

Four months later, Kevin died.

“[The instructor] said, ‘Why don’t you two sit down and talk this out because you both keep saying the same thing,” Weaver said.

“At the end of dinner we said, ‘Want to open a school?’ ” Weaver said.

They spent the next year researching schools.

They formed an advisory board. They created a mock building to get an idea of the costs.

“There were some really crazy, taxing times,” she “The school was really born out of two moms said. that wwanted more for their kids and figured out how to do it,” Weaver said.

“We would like to see autism rates dissipate,” Weaver said. “But [they’re] not, so the next best thing is to create an environment where we can help kids and their parents.”

These days, Gillian is thriving.

“She’s getting fiercely independent, which is very cool,” Weaver said.

With that comes Weaver’s desire to expand the center’s focus.

“My long-term plan is to continue the school of excellence that we have and continue to develop programs, but really work on the job market for our kids and their housing,” she said.

No doubt that goal will be reached, just as the others have.

“I’m just a person … continuing to work on my goals,” Weaver said. “I’m just a mom. I don’t have a teaching degree. I was given this child and along with her came autism and along with that came a school.”

She has been involved with WINGs for nearly 10 years, and previously belonged to a DPWN referral group — Dynamic Professional Women’s Networking — and found this to be a great way to meet other women professionals.

Vicki Nielsen makes a difference in the community

T

he list of organizations to which Vicki Nielsen offers her time is lengthy enough to have you believe she volunteers full time — the McHenry Chamber’s WINGs Board (Women’s Interactive Network Group), the Rotary Club of McHenry Sunrise, the PTO for Alden-Hebron School District No.19, and Board of the Alden-Hebron Softball/ Baseball League.

“I love the support I’ve been shown by other professional women both by those not in my field and those within my field,” she says.

“Through different organizations, I have learned much about our community and services available to women.”

But Nielsen also is an investment advisor and co-operator of McHenry Financial. The Hebron resident has spent more than 30 years working to help individuals, families and businesses face challenges and opportunities with regard to their financial future.

“I have always worked in industries, often within the financial services scope, as well as in healthcare, where many facets are complex, make a direct difference in people’s lives, and need people who really care about the clients they serve, the community they serve and beyond,” she says. “I love when I meet with a client or prospective client to understand them, their work and personal lives, their goals and ambitions.” She then structures a pathway and strategy to help them get to their goals.

“Talking with a client, for example, who is enjoying retirement because of our strategies and ongoing relationship is a check of the heart I can’t even begin to describe,” she says.

While at Centegra Health System, where she has volunteered her time and expertise as a lifetime member and former president of the Hospital Auxiliary, she saw firsthand the extensive analysis and guidance needed to prepare for both anticipated and unanticipated events. She also served on the board of the McHenry County Task Force on Aging, and as a member of its educational task force.

Nielsen is a recipient of the McHenry Chamber of Commerce’s Red Carpet Award for community service and ethics, and is a member of the 2015 class of Leadership Greater McHenry County, an organization that selects McHenry County leaders from all sectors of the community for a 10-month program dedicated to educating and inspiring them to engage in community leadership.

“In keeping with my goal of becoming a better leader and community member, LGMC has been tremendous in fostering understanding and lessons to help in this regard, and provides tremendous opportunities to give back to our community,” she says.

She remains committed as Den Leader to her son’s Cub Scout Den in Hebron, where she serves as a continual role model to young boys as they grow and mature.

“We want these boys to understand and respect our gender, and they’re seeing how our differences are to be celebrated. That when we work together, our communities become the best they can be,” Nielsen says.

Catherine Williams fills cupboards, hearts of needy residents

The Crystal Lake Food Pantry was founded in the Spring of 1982 by the Church Women United. Eight churches became the founding members of the Crystal Lake Food Pantry.

Williams estimates the pantry sees about 800 families each month, and with a family averaging three people, Williams saiys they feed about 2,400 people every 30 days.

C

atherine “Cate” Williams is a well-known volunteer in the community, a tireless supporter for those who are hungry and in need. Past president of the Crystal Lake Food Pantry, Williams led the effort to serve the area’s families in need for five years, offering food assistance to Crystal Lake residents who live within the School District 47/155 boundary.

She has been part of a team of volunteers from about two dozen local churches, and an initiative that has been serving the needs of the community since 1982. Those in need of food assistance know they can always depend on the Crystal Lake Food Pantry.

A dedicated local resident, Williams has helped organize the food pantry’s annual Community Harvest, a food and fundraising drive held each Thanksgiving.

Under Williams’ leadership, the annual Harvest collects more than 60,000 pounds of food for hungry residents and raises more than $20,000 in support each year. Accumulated into what can only be described as a small mountain, the food comes from individual donations and

organizational food drives throughout the month of November. After being weighed, checked for quality, and stored, the food is sent either directly to the Crystal Lake Food Pantry or to the pantry’s offsite storage center.

The incoming food and money is absolutely crucial, Williams says. But the effort is three-fold, and the third fold is key.

“I think the most important part is it raises awareness about what hunger is in Crystal Lake,” Williams says. “I tell people, every day you drive up and down a street in Crystal Lake, you’re probably driving by somebody

his mother-daughter duo is known for bringing energy and enthusiasm to their work in the community, especially when it comes to supporting the Gavers Community Cancer Foundation. At fundraisers they often are the first to arrive and the last to leave, setting up, coordinating along the way and cleaning up at the end. Two years ago, Dougherty joined the foundation’s board and took on a greater role.

In addition to their work with the foundation they work together at Studio 2015 Jewelry, their family owned business. Young also leads a spousal caregiver support group and worked many years at McHenry and Johnsburg high schools.

n her legal career, Susan F. Hutchinson has made a mark in the community. In 1981, she was the first woman judge appointed in the 19th judicial circuit, which at the time included Lake and McHenry counties. In 1994, she was the first woman elected as an appellate judge in the 2nd appellate district.

Through her appointments and elections, she has presided over numerous legal cases. She has also served on the education committee, directing legal education of all judges in state courts and teaching other judges for more than 20 years.

y title, Rebecca Saffert’s job is vice principal at Cary Grove High School, but her compassion and care extend well beyond that of a school administrator. In 2008, she laid the groundwork for Parent University, a program implemented districtwide that helps adults navigate the challenging teen and high school years. Now seven years later the program continues to grow and evolve, bringing in more experts and community leaders as well as provide more sessions for parents. Sessions have included topics on technology in the classroom and at home, financial aid for college-bound students, and coping with teens and anxiety to name a few. Saffert works behind the scenes of Parent University, arranging speakers, scheduling events and publicizing the program.

or the last 12 years Denise Wasserman has served as village clerk. After years of volunteering on the Summer Sunset Festival Committee, she took the reins as chairwoman in 2013.

Wasserman manages the community festival and under her leadership it has continued to grow and include more activities.

Sunday, March 18, 2001, was the scariest day of my life.

I had IV needles in my arms, electrodes stuck all over my body and people in lab coats scrambling all around me. I was alone, confused and scared.

told me that my heart was healthy, and that a convergence of physiological, genetic and stress-related events caused my condition.

While there were certainly medical reasons for my condition, I also knew that my heart was broken and empty in a spiritual sense.

I had lost my purpose, passion and most importantly, my love of life.

My body was responding to my inner voice’s message, one that I had ignored for so long.

In hindsight, I clearly saw and heard all of

That morning, I woke up with my heart racing and feeling so dizzy and nauseated that I had to crawl to the bathroom to throw up.

I said to myself, “This cannot be happening to me! I can’t be having a heart attack. It’s just not possible. I’m young and healthy. I’m a marathon runner, for heaven’s sake!”

At the hospital, they thought otherwise.

Once I reached the emergency room, the staff wasted no time medically slowing my heart rate back to a normal rhythm. All the while, I was in mental and emotional shock about being in the hospital. I was 39 years old and never had any cardiac problems or any other medical issues. This certainly was not the script I had written for my life.

The journey to that pivotal day was one I’d taken slowly. It came about from of a series of small daily decisions about my health, career, love and family. I had a successful career in the technology industry. And by all appearances, I had the world on a string.

I lived in a beautiful apartment overlooking Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, had the sports car in the valet garage and the mink coat in the closet. Everything looked great on the outside. But on the inside, I was empty and lost. I said my family was the most important thing to me, but I hadn’t seen my family in ages. I was just too busy and overcommitted.

For many months I had heard the whisper in my head and heart, “slow down,” but I ignored it and kept moving along.

Meanwhile, the whisper grew louder and louder.

Up until that day, everyone else’s priorities came first on my list. My career and the business deals always came before my health and well being. I knew that had to change immediately. I realized that connecting with

the warning signs, but either chose to ignore them or simply failed to act. I can now see that the two days that I spent in the hospital were a call to action. This medical emergency was a gift for me to seriously reevaluate my priorities and take action.

A week after leaving the hospital, I hired an executive coach and mentor to help me create a plan on how I could use my gifts and knowledge in a new career. This plan gave me the confidence and certainty that I was working toward something bigger in my life.

During this time, I felt my heart and health getting stronger each day.

Soon after, I was taken off the heart medications and resumed my normal physical fitness routine.

Through this process, my life became meaningful again. Over the next couple of years, my coaching and consulting business prospered and I was back in the business of my life.

When I share my story, many people ask me, “Do you have any regrets?” I respond with one — that I did not see the signs and take action sooner. It took a medical emergency for me to finally know the truth and take action.

Through this journey back to love, I learned to listen and trust the wisdom of my inner voice and my body, and take better care of myself. Now, before I make a personal or professional decision, I stop and listen to my head and my heart. I ask myself, “Why am I doing this?” “Is this action in my highest good?”

Because of this practice, my intuition and confidence are now stronger than ever. I now operate from my “why” in life — to help people find the love in their work, their bodies and their lives. I ask myself every day, “How can my experiences be an inspiration and catalyst for people to examine and change their lives?” This is my guiding principle and underlying motivation in my work and life.

ounded in 1960, Crystal Lake Travel is one of, if not the oldest, travel agencies in McHenry County.

Owner Susan Marie Swett started working at the agency in 1975, and purchased the business in 1981, when she was twenty-four. Co-owner Patty DeRoo joined Crystal Lake Travel in 2003 and became a partner in October, 2014.

Today, the agency employs four full-time travel agents, five part-time agents and a bookkeeper. All of the agents love to travel and between them, they’ve visited every continent except Antarctica. “Going to the destinations, seeing the resorts and experiencing the culture helps us do our jobs better,” said Swett.

or Carmen Boyer, designer and owner of White Oak Interiors in Algonquin, creating a new room often means transforming something old.

“Repurposing is utilizing an item or space in a new way from what was originally intended,” Boyer explained.

A recent project brought rustic character to a contemporary marble fireplace by adding a mantel of reclaimed timber. Cabinets can be transformed with paint, different hardware, or by removing doors. “It’s a good way to use furniture people have grown tired of. A dresser can become a media center, or an old headboard can become the back of a bench,” she said.

he Crystal Lake-based business was established in 2005 and offers faux finishing, murals and cabinetry and furniture finishes. Faux the Love of It goes right into their clients’ homes for an initial consult, provides samples and examines the work that needs to be done to provide an estimate.

“The beautiful part of our jobs is because we go into different homes, our jobs change regularly,” Engel said.

“Every job has a change of scenery and change of pace.”

This is a second career for both women, as both were teachers prior to becoming stay-at-home moms and then business owners. Both have enjoyed art since they were children. While stay-at-home moms, the two rediscovered their passion for art. Engel began woodworking and crafts, selling her items at craft fairs. Sutherland began focusing on interior design, first in her own home, then her friends’ homes. Both also took painting classes.

The women met in 2004 when they volunteered on a charity home renovation and house walk in Oak Park. The meeting led to collaboration on a big project Sutherland had agreed to. Before long, they realized how much fun they had working as a team and continued to take on projects together.

The two balance each other well, with Engel working with textures and large areas and Sutherland focusing on the refined, up close work. Sutherland also serves as the n w h e r a l d . c research o m /m a g a zand i n e development person and Engel company’s

handles the bookkeeping, ordering and scheduling.

“When you see the end product of what you do, that gives you personal satisfaction,” Sutherland said.

Going forward, the focus of their business will be to continue to provide quality work and show clients what can be done to easily update their cabinetry and furniture. One thing for sure is that as their business grows and they require additional help the two will still oversee all projects, be on the job sites and complete the artwork themselves.

ate Weber, publisher of the Northwest Herald and McHenry County Magazine, loves the newspaper industry.

“I enjoy the fast pace, and that newspapers touch so many people on a regular basis, in digital and in print. Additionally, through my work, I learn so much about the community I live in,” she said.

Since her days as a reporter on her high school paper, through college at the University of Pittsburgh, and into a career that has taken her from Colorado to Pennsylvania, to Illinois, Weber has worked in different facets of the business. Now as a publisher, she is responsible for all of them.

“If there’s an issue with circulation, an article or an advertisement, the buck stops with me and I like that. I’m finally putting all of the different pieces together, and seeing how they promote and build the community,” Weber said.

llison McCaleb, newly appointed managing editor of McHenry County Magazine, loves words. Written words, spoken words, illustrated words. And it shows.

Allison has been involved with newspapers for nearly 20 years, working in many capacities including reporter, editor and graphic designer. What most excites her about the industry is “its inherent fluidity. No task is the same each day, and no day contains the same task.”

A part of the early development phases of McHenry County Magazine, Allison says “I look forward to being integrally involved in the ‘guts’ of the operation — its editorial heart. I believe there are unique stories in our market that should be told. I am eager to discover and present them in a way that is both reader-friendly and eyecatching. It’s what I love doing most.”

Allison is originally from Texas and has lived in upstate New York, Louisiana and Indiana prior to settling down in Crystal Lake with her husband Dan, and two children, Aleah and Matthew.

She’s enjoying her transition to the Midwest as well. Weber arrived last May and has found McHenry County to be warm and welcoming. She also likes the unique character of our local communities.

First known chiropractic adjustment On September 18, 1895, Palmer performed the first-ever chiropractic adjustment on Harvey Lillard, a deaf janitor, in Davenport, Iowa.

Palmer described the incident in his 1910 article “The Science, Art and Philosophy of Chiropractic: The Chiropractor’s Adjuster.”

“Harvey Lillard, a janitor in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made inquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give in his back and immediately became deaf. An examination showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man’s hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half-hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before.

There was nothing ‘accidental’ about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained.”

e’ve all heard of autoimmune diseases but many of us have little idea what they really are. They are one of the top five medical conditions of great concern to women, along with heart disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and depression.

Understanding these diseases is crucial to knowing how to protect against them.

Here are the basics.

It could be passed down from an aunt to a niece or from cousin to cousin, he said. “It’s not usually passed from a parent to a child but it can be.” He adds that the relatives usually do not share the same autoimmune disease so the aunt could have lupus and the niece could have juvenile diabetes.

Dr. Kazlowski explained that this could be an infection, vaccination or food product like gluten. Other triggers are exposure to chemicals or consumer products made from plastics, artificial fibers and synthetic dyes.

According to the Environmental Working Group, the average person is exposed to more than 126 chemicals before even leaving the bathroom in the morning, considering the shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, soap, deodorant and sunscreen that people use.

Mercury is a chemical that has long been suspected of causing autoimmunity by increasing the production of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell in the immune system. In addition, the NIH is researching whether a protein in cow’s milk may help trigger type 1 diabetes in genetically susceptible children.

A leaky gut

A gut that is in bad shape due to stress and junk food can create Zonulin. This opens up

the spaces between the cells of the intestinal lining. That normally occurs in order for nutrients and other molecules to get in and out of the intestine. However, when leaky gut is present, the spaces between the cells open up too much allowing larger protein molecules to get into the bloodstream where an immunologic reaction can take place.

Once that happens, the body is primed to react to those proteins each and every time they appear.

Autoimmune disorders share common symptoms.

While each of the more than 90 disorders are unique, they do share some of the same symptoms, such as extreme fatigue and joint and muscle pain, according to Dr. Kazlowski.

The classic sign of an autoimmune disease is inflammation, which can cause redness, heat, pain and swelling.

To prevent autoimmune diseases and to feel your best once you already have one, the steps are the same, according to the USOWH. Eat healthy, well-balanced meals. Dr. Kazlowski stresses eating vegetables, dark fruit, fish twice a week and limiting animal fat.

Get regular physical activity, but don’t overdo it. A gentle exercise program, such as yoga or tai chi, is a wise choice.

Get enough rest. Rest allows your body tissues and joints the time they need to repair.

Reduce stress. Try meditation and guided imagery to lower your stress levels.

The Daycare Dilemma

t’s a dilemma most parents face, whether they work outside the home or not. Who cares for their children when they can’t, and what’s the best fit for their family?

McHenry County families have a wealth of options available. To help parents navigate the often overwhelming array of choices, we’ll highlight a few local programs and businesses, committed to the care and development of your child.

Child Care/Day Care For families in need of all-day care, McHenry County has centers that open early and stay open to 6 p.m., or later. “Child care centers are 48 | MAY 2015 | MCHENRY COUNTY MAGAZINE

Centers offer meals and snacks, and may provide infant and after-school care. The centers also have educational components to their programs.

“While there are academic and social components, child care centers are also meeting needs such as potty training, and helping children give up pacifiers,” Linder said.

FAMILY IN FOCUS

When choosing a program, Linder says to make sure that the program is licensed by the Department of Children and Family Services.

Many programs also are pursuing accreditation, which has standards beyond those required for licensing. “ExceleRate Illinois is one that a lot of centers are working toward,” says Linder.

Parents should be welcome to drop in and observe what is going on in the classroom.

“Communication also is huge. Find out if the center has a newsletter, and if the teacher responds to questions right away,” Linder says.

MCC’s Children’s Learning Center has total enrollment of about 80 students, and daily capacity of about 55. MCC students and employees have enrollment priority, but the center is open to the public as space allows.

Preschool Preschools differ from day care in that they’re of limited length, usually 90 minutes to a couple of hours, depending upon the age of the child, and may only meet two or three days a week.

Cathy Kuntz, director of Barlina House preschool, affiliated with the Crystal Lake Park District, says her program is a great option for kids who are cared for at home by a parent or a sitter. “We’re a small portion of their day.”

Preschools can be independent, or affiliated with churches, private schools, public school districts, or park districts.

When evaluating programs, Kuntz encourages parents to visit the preschool while class is in session and bring your child. “Stay and observe how the teacher and children interact, and how the children interact with each other. Ask about what the routine is, discipline policies, security and cleanliness,” she says.

Kuntz also advises parents to request a parent handbook from each program they visit. “That way, you can sit down with them at home and make comparisons,” she says.

“For many, it’s the first time away from their parents, so we’re helping them get into routines, and trying to extend their attention spans,” Kuntz says.

The program encourages physical development through activities that work on children’s large and small motor skills. Exposure to letters, numbers and colors encourage intellectual growth and helps kids prepare for kindergarten.

“We’re proud to offer children an opportunity to participate in activities that promote their development of physical, social, emotional and intellectual skills,” said Kuntz.

In-home Care Parents who travel frequently, work long hours, or families with children ranging from infants to school age, may want to consider hiring a come-and-go or live-in nanny.

“A family that might benefit from a live-in nanny is one where both parents are doctors, and they don’t have a set schedule, or they are business owners and have to travel frequently,” says Januskyte.

Screening and hiring a nanny can be a daunting process, which is where agencies like Monicare come in. Families pay a placement fee to an agency, and work together through the hiring process, which typically takes about a month, Januskyte says.

Summer day camps offer options for that ‘in-between’ age group

Local summer camps are a viable option for working parents this summer. With no video games, lazy days or down time during the day, parents can rest assured their children are getting valued supervision partnered with the most fun-filled summer they can possibly enjoy.

“The connection they make with other children is great,” Sage YMCA youth and family summer day camp director Sue Owsiany says. “Camp also helps children stay healthy and active throughout the summer instead of sitting behind electronic devices.”

One of the unique aspects that the Sage Day Summer Camp offers is a 30-minute daily reading program in addition to all the active activities.

“In addition to getting those benefits of staying healthy throughout the summer, you also get that summer reading to help continue to challenge children to learn new skills,” Owsiany says.

The daily Summer Camp at Sage also features a weekly field trip on Fridays, which range from bowling and laser tag to roller skating and even other YMCAs for various challenges.

Explore All That Nature Offers While the Sage YMCA offers a typical day camp for kids, the McHenry County Conservation District (MCCD) offers something a little different for children this summer.

“Our whole mission is to help kids understand their natural environment,” says Deb Chapman, education services manager at the MCCD. “The big thing is that we are always outdoors and exploring nature.”

The Conservation District offers three main all-day summer camps, including the Outdoor Adventure Camp, Conservation Day Camp and the Time Travelers Camp.

From the Native Americans to pioneer and farm life, kids get a crack at everything during the Time Travelers, including running into fur traders during a creek canoeing adventure.

OPTIONS FOR TEENAGERS For teenagers who aren’t quite ready to give up summer camp, many camps in McHenry County offer a counselor-in-training option.

“Teen leaders are responsible for helping guide children during camp hours, but are never left alone,” Owsiany says.

The program allows teens to work side-by-side with camp counselors to help learn leadership skills and do weekly service projects and handson activities with campers. Because of the close contact with campers, all teen leaders must have graduated high school and be looking to go into the education field. adno=0315408

For those who still get satisfaction from going to camp, the MCCD’s Wild Things Camp offers something a little more intense for ages 12 to 15. The camp is more rigorous than others, and includes an overnight campout.

“It’s definitely a psychically challenging camp, but it’s fun,” Chapman says.

Over the course of 24 hours, all campers will participate in a borderline triathlon, which will include a 13-mile bike ride, two-mile hike and a seven-mile kayaking extravaganza before spending the night overnight in a tent.

The ‘Sort Of’ Single Mom?

N

o, my husband and I are not getting divorced nor did he suffer an untimely death. He started traveling more for work, leaving me alone with the kids on a fairly regular basis.

Now, I have two disclaimers before I go on.

Before you get any ideas about coming and breaking into my house knowing my husband may or may not be home, you should know we have turned our home into a virtual Fort Knox with an elaborate ADT security system complete with motion sensors and video surveillance. As if our dog — who threatens every passerby with her ferocious bark — wasn’t enough. The system also allows my husband to watch our every move while he’s gone, making sure I lock the front door and messing with me by turning lights on and off.

I love my husband. He is a good man who loves our children and me very much. He provides a good life for us and I appreciate how hard he works despite his shortfalls in the areas of laundry and putting the kids to bed.

Now that I have that clear, let’s talk about how our life has shifted over the last several months. My husband used to work downtown, which meant about three hours a day commuting. He also traveled out-of-town occasionally, so I’m no stranger to holding down the homestead on my own.

Recently he took on a new role where he now works from home, but has to travel out-of-town slightly more — a trade-off for sure. When he’s home, he’s home. This helps me a great deal as we are getting the kids on and off the bus, doing homework, driving to after school activities, and it allows us to have

dinner as a family more often. It also gives him some perspective on the chaos of our daily “routine.”

Of course, having him around more often was a bit of an adjustment for me. I was used to a nice quiet house once the kids got on the bus. I was able to clean up the kitchen and have it stay clean for at least six hours. I was able to do my freelance writing in peace and quiet. I also was able to sneak in a nap before the kids got home.

I learned quickly that my sink never will be empty again as long as he is here [working from home].

I have since traded that for the man with The. Loudest. Voice. In. The. Universe. I had to put headphones on and listen to spa music to cancel out the sound of him all day long. To top it off, he has a wireless headset for his phone so he walks around the house and participates in conference calls making it hard for me to escape his real-life Glenngarry Glenn Ross speeches. I found myself coming up with errands, like taking all our change buckets to the bank, just to get out of the house.

I learned quickly that my sink never will be empty again as long as he is here. I suppose the fact that he simply leaves his dishes for me to clean is better than the month’s supply of dirty Tupperware he would collect before bringing home, leaving me to FAMILY IN FOCUS

gag over the ungodly stench when I opened them.

And just when I’ve gotten used to the volume of his voice and dishes, he’s gone on a four-day trip. At first I kind of enjoy the time and space and the fact that I have one less child to take care of. But that is quickly replaced with the fact that I miss having him around.

I miss talking to him and hanging out at night after the kids go to bed, having dinner as a family and the extra set of hands.

Of course, in no time, he arrives home. Most times he calls me on the way with a request for dinner. He returns with plenty of laundry, spreads his briefcase on the island in my kitchen and I quickly remember that having “an extra set of hands” can have two meanings.

Best of all, he makes up for being gone all week by taking the kids to Toys R Us to buy Nerf guns and triggering a gun fight that riles the kids up right before bed.

My prodigal son has arrived home and just like the story goes, all is forgiven. I am just happy to have him back.

And The Women Of McHenry County

ounds like a strange combination. What do all of these varying subjects have in common? All were processed within McHenry County thanks to the women of the community. Through the history of the area many women have played progressive roles in multiple industries.

One name appearing in many headlines last year during the 100th anniversary of Wrigley Field was Margaret Donahue. This Huntley native, enticed away from her job at a laundry supply company, became secretary for the Chicago Cubs in 1919. In her nearly 40 years with the organization, she coordinated Women’s Day programs, instituted season tickets in 1929, and by the 1950s, became the first female vice president for a major league baseball team. Margaret Donahue retired in 1958 as a well-revered and respected figure in professional baseball.

the largest landowner in Huntley at the turn of the last century, owning large swaths of farmland as well as businesses downtown. Though he was known for his success, it also was widely understood that his success came largely due to his wife, Margaret. In the Huntley Centennial book, it was written that Margaret was “one of the most intelligent women in McHenry County,” and that it was because of her insight into business that her husband was able to thrive.

From individual efforts to family affairs, area women also played important roles in the service to the United States. During WWII, Wm. Fencil Co., a producer of gaskets for products such as refrigerators and automobiles, constructed and operated a fuze plant for munitions southeast of Huntley. The complex was constructed of multiple shacks, where different steps in the process of making the fuzes were carried out. Though many women worked at the facility, one shack, called the pellet house, was staffed entirely by women and nicknamed “the hen house.” This part of the production involved loading the fuze with a charge of powder as well as inserting a fine piece of wire into the chamber for tripping the firing mechanism. These were important tasks requiring fine motor skills, which women performed best. This production line factored into the public recognition Fencil received for efficiency and success in manufacturing for the war effort.

Important female figures in the area were not a phenomenon when Margaret Donahue made history. One early example was Mrs. T. M. Cook, vice-president

of the Farmers Exchange Bank in Huntley during the Jake Marino has been 1890s. Gemstone Folklore — With Karly Bulinski, Steffans Jewelers

ver since the discovery of the first gemstone, people have been creating stories about how they came to exist in our world. Some make sense, while others are really wacky! Here are some of my favorite gemstone folklore and legends.

AMETHYST One day Dionysus — god of wine, celebration and intoxication — became enraged with the mortals and vowed to release his two ferocious tigers on the next mortal who crossed his path. That poor soul happened to be the sweet young maiden, Amethysta who was on her way to pay homage to the goddess Diana.

Before she could make it to the temple, Dionysus unleashed his vicious tigers on Amethysta, but not before Diana turned her into a statue of gleaming clear quartz.

Dionysus, realizing the error of his way, starting weeping tears of wine over the statue, which stained the quartz purple, thus creating the gemstone amethyst (which also happens

TOURMALINE To explain why tourmaline is found in almost every color, it is believed that tourmaline traveled from the heart of the Earth up to the sun and along the way it traveled through a rainbow collecting all of its colors.

JADE A legend says that a Chinese emperor once offered 15 cities in exchange for a jade carving that he could hold in one hand.

CLEAR QUARTZ Up until the 16th century, it was believed that clear quartz, or rock crystal, was water from the heavens that the gods had frozen into ice crystals, even the scientists prescribed to this speculation!

GOLDEN TOPAZ Golden topaz, or imperial topaz, once was believed to change color when it was in the presence of poisoned food or drink, making it the stone of choice for royal families.

Here are some great tips for easy, time-saving makeup updates:

Foundation adjustment Re-evaluate your foundation to make sure it is keeping your skintone even and looking natural. If you choose a foundation that not only matches your skin color, but fits your skin type (dry, normal, oily, etc), your foundation will be more likely to stay on and look even all day long.

Camouflage

Try using a concealer to hide imperfections that foundation can’t cover. Blot concealer onto the area after foundation is applied, then blend with fingers or foundation brush. Add a light dusting of finishing powder to set.

Eyes

Choose natural matte shades that are a good fit with your skin tone and hair color (do not try to match your clothing).

Use two complimentary shades (one medium depth and the other a bit lighter). Blend the medium shade on the lid and the lighter shade in the crease.

This can be done on all eye shapes, and always looks professional.

Eyeliner

Use a blackened shade instead of pure black (blackened blue, green or purple are best). Apply to top of lid only. Then apply similar eye shadow shade under eye with thin angle brush. This will open and lighten up the eyes. Adding the similar shadow shade over the liner will also help keep the liner from “bleeding.”

Mascara

Choose a medium matte shade. Apply to the apple of the cheek. Clean off blush brush and brush over cheek to blend (gives an “airbrush” effect).

Lips

Step away from gloss and try a lipstick!

Choose a deep peach or pink matte.

Apply, blot, dust powder over, apply again, and blot. Should stay on all day!

Powder

Apply a finishing powder one shade darker than your skin tone. Dust lightly over face to set makeup. The deeper shade will give a natural bronzing effect to skin without looking too dark. This will keep the skin from looking too pale by adding a healthly-looking tone.

HOG HEAVEN Bahama BBQ, Kentucky and Tennessee

Paradise covered with glimmering waters, the smell of coconut oil in the air and bikinis ver spring break, I headed down to the Bahamas with my everywhere. I mention this because my middle son thought he was in heaven and my younger wife and two of my boys to get a little rest and sunshine. son thought they all had cooties. In between swimming with the dolphins, I think you could best describe this place as having tropical drinks with lunch and getting Disneyland on the beach. The resort had a restaurant for whatever struck your fancy — steak, Italian, all-you-can-eat buffets, French and seafood.

I could visit the kitchen? Delon left to make arrangements and returned several minutes later and introduced me to Chef Elton Bowleg.

Elton is an extremely likable guy with a big smile. He took the boys and me on a tour of the kitchen which eventually got us to his smoker.

Turns out he smokes on the same smoker I do, Ole Hickory Pits. We traded stories and both agreed how much we love our Ole Hickory Pits smokers.

I was so impressed with the family-style concept I now offer it at the Rib House every Sunday. Family Supper Sunday has become a very popular way for families to enjoy some down time together over some great barbecue.

I never really thought about it, but most I noticed in a flier that they also had a historians say the islands are where barbecue barbecue restaurant named Virgil’s, which was down below street level. first got its start.

Turn The Corner Center helps domestic abuse victims achieve independence

wenty-four people per minute in the United States are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner, according to information from the National Domestic Violence Hotline. That is more than 12 million women and men over the course of one year. Agencies like Turning Point of McHenry County are working to change this statistic.

Founded in 1980, Turning Point is a domestic abuse center which began as a few women choosing to take action against intolerable abuse in the homes of their friends and neighbors at a time in our history when the issue often was viewed as a “family matter” rather than a criminal one.

In the face of what the women viewed as an unacceptable level of disregard, they took initiative and started an emergency help line for victims in the community. As word spread about their work, other concerned volunteers came forward to address the issue of violence against women. As

a result, Turning Point was incorporated in May of 1981. Last year, Turning Point responded to more than 3,000 emergency calls for support, says Hans Mach, development director at Turning Point.

“Of those calls, both adult men and women, and children as young as 5, were provided support from our programs and service nights in the emergency shelter,” says Mach. Sometimes the biggest challenge is getting a victim to seek support.

“On average, it takes a victim seven attempts before leaving an abuser,” says Mach. The rationale behind remaining in such a relationship is varied — fear of increase in the danger by leaving, the fear of losing their children, or the fear that no one will believe the abuse is actually occurring. Language barriers, isolation and apprehension about potential treatment by law enforcement and court officials also can play a part.

“Whatever the barrier, it has to be the client’s choice to flee that relationship, and making that decision is always hard for them,” says Mach.

When the client finally chooses to leave and seek help, those at Turning Point are ready and willing to handle their case with the utmost care and confidentiality. n w h e r a l d . c o m /m a g a z i n e

“When a client contacts the McHenry County Crisis Line, they are patched over to Turning Point’s offices where they speak directly with a domestic violence advocate,” says Mach.

An average call lasts approximately 30 minutes, during which an advocate will listen to the client and present options based on each unique situation. Once a client and their advocate decide on a course of action, that action begins immediately. Whether it is providing a room for the client and their children at the Emergency Shelter, providing counseling, or simply encouraging them to attend group therapy sessions. Alternatively, the advocate can assist clients in securing an Order of Protection document, should the client choose, a legal action calling for the abuser to be removed from the home.

Turning Point also accepts donations, which support the services offered to clients.

Turning Point always is looking for volunteers to support the mission.

“Turning Point cannot charge clients for victim services in accordance with the Illinois Domestic Violence Act. Therefore, we heavily rely on contributions from organizations, corporations, and individuals in the community,” says Mach.

Donations are used for such things as a night in the shelter for an adult client, paying for a taxi ride to the courthouse for an order of protection, counseling sessions for survivors, or shelter for a mother and child.

“Anything and everything can help get a client and or their family back on track to a new and safer life,” says Mach.

It’s impossible to love someone who abuses you.

FACT: The victim often can still see a glimpse of the person they once fell in love with, and though the victim feels so much shame and embarrassment over the fact that they love someone who is abusive to them, it’s difficult to let them go.

Domestic violence happens when someone flies out of control.

FACT: Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior in which one exerts extreme power and control over another individual.

Domestic violence is always physical.

FACT: Intimate partner violence exists on a continuum of behaviors. Abuse can be emotional, psychological, verbal, and/or sexual, and often escalates.

If someone abuses you, it is an obvious decision to leave the relationship.

FACT: An abusive partner is likely not abusive at every moment of the day. It is a very complex situation, and the abuse is not necessarily what defines the relationship.

There’s no good reason for a victim not to call the police.

FACT: Calling the police is a lifesaver for many

women. But many hesitate because they don’t want their partner to go to jail, or because they fear that calling may make the violence worse. Some worry that the police also may act violently. Police are first responders and can save your life. They can also be a connection to necessary resources — including Turning Point.

Women abuse men just as often as men abuse women.

FACT: The truth is relationship violence does happen to men. The numbers are significantly higher among women, but men experience it too from both female and male abusers. Most men, though, are less likely to report their abuse. But, for every 1 man hospitalized by domestic violence, there are 46 women who go to the hospital because of domestic violence (based on national statistics).

Domestic violence only happens to women who are poor, dependent, or uneducated.

FACT: Domestic violence does not discriminate.

It transcends all socio and economic levels of society. Of the 22,000 calls a month received by the National Domestic Violence Hotline, victims range from every socioeconomic class, every race, every education level, every geographic region.

Drugs and alcohol cause domestic violence.

FACT: Drug and alcohol use can be exacerbating factors for violent individuals, but they don’t cause violence — rather, they can lower the inhibitions of already violent people.

Tough love is the best way to help a victim of violence.

FACT: Pushing victims to leave is the worst thing to do. They have to make the choice to leave the abusive relationship themselves. What we tell friends and family is don’t give up on them. The best thing is to listen, to understand, to say that it’s very complicated but that you’re worried about their safety and are they willing to sit and speak with someone.

Turning Point relies on the victim to contact the agency directly and does not accept referrals from friends and family who may be aware of or suspect abuse.

SleepOut Success Community Foundation to help Pioneer Center fund programs for the homeless

McHenry County’s largest social service agency is partnering with the McHenry County Community Foundation to help fund local programs for the homeless.

The Community Foundation agreed recently to a two-to-one match of every dollar raised through SleepOut for Shelter, up to $100,000. SleepOut

is the largest fundraising event put on annually

by PADS, a division of Pioneer Center for Human Services. This year, SleepOut is scheduled for May 9 at The Church of the Holy Apostles in McHenry.

Participants pay a small entry fee or seek pledges, and then spend the night outside, sleeping under the stars in tents, boxes or cars. At the event, participants enjoy a bonfire, food and drink, live music, storytelling, games and more.

But area residents don’t have to spend the night outside to participate.

Anyone can sponsor an individual or family who plans to sleep out. Visit SleepOutForShelter.org for more information.

Last year, Pioneer/PADS served 394 local residents through its homeless program. Of those, 174 stayed in overnight shelters hosted by county churches.

PADS’ 2015 operating budget is $714,051. Of that, only $65,000 comes from the state of Illinois. An additional $95,000 comes from the United Way of McHenry County, and about $24,000 is generated through fees for service. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban

Development had contributed $105,000 annually, but that funding was cut this year.

Pioneer/PADS is left with a deficit of more than $530,000. That gap has to be filled through community donations.

With the HUD funding cut, Pioneer/PADS approached McHenry County Community Foundation Executive Director Robin Doeden about a potential partnership.

“We are so excited about it,” Doeden said.

The Foundation found a donor who was willing to contribute the two-to-one match, she said. The donor wished to remain anonymous.

Last year, the MCCF donated more than $1 million to 75 local organizations. All of its funding comes from community donors. No taxpayer dollars are used.

Pioneer/PADS needs to raise $50,000 through SleepOut to receive the full $100,000 match. Last year’s event raised $71,000 and more than 500 people participated.

DOUGLAS VISONA Crystal Lake “AQUA BEAUTY” Collage Represents a tropical coral scene.

Douglas Visona is a collagist (one who makes collage). To his friends, he is called the “Collage Master.” Having a theme in mind, Visona starts by taking the colored parts out of magazines and begins gluing them to a pressed boardtype backing. Upon looking into a scene, the viewer begins seeing the various squares and free form pieces of magazine that completes the piece. He then covers the piece with a polymer liquid hardener that hardens to a glass-like finish. Framing is the last step to completion.
