“I knew I had spider veins, but had no idea I had underlying vein disease, too.”

Claudia Linda, well-known North Shore Spanish teacher, came to Illinois Vein Specialists after several years of intending to have her spider veins examined. In her mind it was strictly a cosmetic issue that she’d eventually get around to improving.

She was actually a bit surprised when Dr. Rivard and his team at Illinois Vein Specialists insisted on a thorough exam of both legs including specialized ultrasonography by IVS’ certified technicians.

What she didn’t know is that spider veins in the legs are frequently associated with underlying venous hypertension. Dr. Rivard points out: “High pressure in the veins inside the legs is caused when the vein valves break and the flow of blood falls backwards. This pressure forces its way to the surface veins distending the small capillaries causing the appearance of spider veins. This typically occurs below the knees and especially at the ankles.”

Other factors in the development of spider veins include: Age: The development of spider veins can occur at any time, but usually peaks in late middle age.

Gender: Women are four times more likely to have spider veins than men.

Pregnancy: Hormones are thought to weaken vein walls and this is coupled with increased blood volume during pregnancy that tends to distend veins.

Lifestyle/Occupation: Daily activities requiring pro-longed sitting or standing are also implicated in the development of spider veins.

Claudia, as a middle-aged teacher and mother, was a perfectly typical candidate for spider veins.

BUT HERE’S WHERE THE STORY GETS INTERESTING She actually had symptoms of underlying vein disease for several years, but never recognized them.

They were a bit vague, occurred intermittently and then disappeared, and never really triggered the medical alarm bell we all have in our heads.

For example, every once in a while Claudia’s right leg had a dull ache without a seeming explanation, but then it would go away. And now and then she would suffer from restless leg syndrome in the same right leg for a couple of nights and then it would disappear. And this went off and on for years. There just didn’t seem to be anything to tell a doctor about.

Feeling Excitement

have been waiting to produce this September fall fashion issue for months. Really, I have — just ask our designer, Allison McCaleb. I must have talked up story ideas for this particular issue at least once a week, probably to her annoyance.

Heather Spyra of Spring Grove who know exactly what colors, silhouettes and patterns are going to look great as the months start to get cooler.

But I just couldn’t help it. I always look forward to meeting local store owners and models who help us put together our fashion shoots because they’re genuinely excited to be a part of this issue. It’s the businesses’ chance to showcase their hottest looks for the season, and most owners are in the biz to help you look the best you possibly can. And it’s the models’ chance to have fun in front of a camera and be in a real print product.

I was excited to learn new ways to tie a scarf, and when we found Tru Bleu Boutique in Barrington and they offered 20 different ways to wear a scarf, I got even more excited.

Remarkably Rustic Reuse, Repurpose And Refurnish In Style

If

your idea of rustic décor is limited to hunting lodge furniture and mounted antlers, think again.

Just ask Judie Kunzie, one of the owners of Interiors Anew, 134 Cass St., in Woodstock.

“It’s something that looks like it’s been around for a while,” she says. “It’s lodge styles and cabin looks, but there are many items that fit into it.”

Kunzie and business partner Addie Burns’ shop on the Woodstock Square is full of antiques, 20th-century vintage items and even a few clever reproductions.

But part of the fun is finding imaginative ways to repurpose old items.

A simple mason jar can find second life as a candleholder, vase or as part of a centerpiece. Window and picture frames can hold collections or function as message boards. Stacks of old suitcases can serve as a bedside table and offer hidden storage, too.

Even old dishes can be mixed and matched to add flair to a table.

“Not everything has to match,” says Judy Schmidt, sales associate at Interiors Anew, who also has used quilts and chenille bedspreads as tablecloths.

Defining rustic

Trying to pinpoint what defines rustic décor isn't easy, as it comes with a variety of names and interpretations: cabin, cottage, farmhouse, industrial and shabby chic, a more feminine take on rustic design.

Yet there are a few common elements: natural materials such as wood, metal and glass; raw, loose-woven fabrics such as cotton, linen and even burlap; antiques or vintage items; found items from nature; salvaged and repurposed pieces; and outdoor items used inside.

Great rustic looks are often right under your nose, tucked into dark corners of your closets, attics and basements, even parked at the end of your neighbor’s driveway on garage sale day, wearing a $5 price tag.

Brent Hollenberg, owner of Reclaimed (www.reclaimedcl.com) in Crystal Lake, says he often finds great pieces at garage and estate sales, and he even gets items from customers.

“We also work with local thrift stores who get pieces that are damaged or broken,” he says. “We fix and restore them.”

Hollenberg says the craftsmanship and quality of vintage furniture — even as late as the 1980s — makes many pieces worth saving.

“There were a lot of things still being manufactured here [in the U.S.],” he says.

“They were using real wood and detail like dovetailing in the drawers. Now, the drawers have paper backing.”

While items salvaged from farms have long had a place in home décor, items rescued from closed factories are providing a fresh, urban twist to traditional rustic looks.

Cage lights, drafting tables, benches, metal lockers, cabinets and rolling carts not only are functional and sturdy, they also can be inexpensive compared to traditional antiques.

Such usage is one of the defining looks at Reclaimed.

“I’d call it ‘industrial urban,’ not rustic in the sense of old barns,” Hollenberg says.

But just like its country cousin, rustic’s urban twist combines metal with wood, either painted or stained.

“All of it blends together really easily,” he says.

“People will sometimes ask, ‘If it’s real wood, why paint it?’” Hollenberg says.

“But I’d rather see something painted and reused than end up in a landfill.”

Other repurposed items include oversized light bulbs transformed into vases, old doors remade into a hall tree and metal sign letters reused as wall décor.

Clear glass apothecary jars sold at Interiors Anew function as both decoration and storage.

“You can fill them with buttons or balls of yarn,” Schmidt says.

Old toys can provide a whimsical touch to bedrooms, offices and even the dining room. Wooden letters and trays from old Scrabble games can be used to make desk signs with inspirational messages or

Wooden crates make great coffee tables, and picture frames and even small doors and shutters can hold jewelry or scarves.

Bringing rustic style to your home can be a matter of introducing a few accessories.

“People buy accessories that they can mix and match, because we can’t afford to buy everything new,” Kunzie says. “Just a piece or two can make a big difference.”

Arlene Polster, sales associate at Interiors Anew, recommends looking for a piece of art, an area rug or pillows in a color that’s already in your room to create an interesting, cohesive look.

“When the colors coordinate, you can mix styles,” she says.

Creating juxtapositions, such as blending the straight lines of industrial items with softer elements, such as a curved Victorian bench, is another way to create interest. The key is finding items that have contrast — black/ white, hard/soft, shiny/matte, straight/curved

— but share a common element such as color.

Hollenberg loves the combination of a piece painted in a solid, neutral color on the outside and a bright, lime-green or teal accent inside drawers and cabinets.

“It’s an unexpected pop of color,” he says.

When it comes to furniture, he recommends a few well-chosen, unique pieces over a matched set, and if those pieces are old things given new life, so much the better.

“When you think about all the things that have already been made, it’s great when you can find a way to use them again,” he says.

TRY IT YOURSELF! Judie Kunzie and Judy Schmidt of Interiors Anew in Woodstock offer an idea to store and display jewelry, scarves or handbags.

Begin with a painted or stained cabinet door or a large empty picture frame. If the paint is chipped, check for lead paint with a test kit (available in hardware/ home improvement stores). When your surface is smooth, seal it with a coat of clear polyurethane.

For an empty frame, staple a piece of open wire mesh, such as chicken wire, to the back and seal the edges with tape to protetc the wall.

Attach necklaces and earrings to the mesh using their clasps. Use small hooks to hang bracelets and scarves.

For a shutter or door, attach knob-style drawer pulls in two rows, in an alternating pattern, so that items hung from the top row will fall between those on the bottom row. Use smaller pulls for jewelry or scarves, larger knobs (including doorknobs) for handbags. Always place heavier items on the bottom.

Finish by adding a hanger to the back. mc

Hub Of Handmade Art One of the Woodstock Square’s best kept secrets is just beyond a sidewalk littered with passersby toting shopping bags, past high picture windows dotted with colorful advertisements, and across the hall from a vacant toy store.

There lies a room, empty and quiet. The historic Square is home to the spacious room, dubbed Mixin Mingle by its owner, Nate Grindeland.

The airy space waits patiently for the next business meeting, mixer or social event to crowd its halls and bring people together. Its nondescript walls and open floor plan lend themselves to whatever event should happen to come through its doors.

And almost every month since November 2011, the space has transformed into HoneyCraft Market, a homemade craft and vintage market.

Like Harry Potter’s renowned Room of Requirement, the once-bare walls become lined with market vendors selling their wares to satisfy the needs of the budding creative community in McHenry County. At the end of the day, as many as 23 artists pack up their beauty supplies, jewelry, scarves, mittens, candles, handbags and card stock and vanish … until the next month, that is.

“We’re only here one day a month — if you blink, we’ll be gone!” laughs Amy Furrow, a Woodstock native and co-founder of the market.

‘The heartbeat of DIY’ The idea for the art market took shape in Furrow’s mind after she moved back from the “indie and artsy” Ukrainian neighborhood of Chicago to quiet, more conservative Woodstock.

Though she looked forward to moving back to her hometown, Furrow, a filmmaker and graphic designer by trade, worried that without her daily dose of artistry, her creativity would wither.

“I selfishly wanted to meet people here who were into indie, artsy things, like me,” Furrow says.

A skilled artist in her own right, Furrow frequented art shows in Chicago and sold ceramic pieces on the crafting website Etsy. Her transplantation to Woodstock inspired a work of art on a larger scale. She saw the potential of the town to be a hub of handmade art.

“I wanted to bring the heartbeat of DIY culture in bigger cities to Woodstock, Ill.,” she says.

Furrow found the pulse of her idea in Grindeland, and the two have created a

The relationship between Mixin Mingle and HoneyCraft Market is a symbiotic one, as the event allows Grindeland to welcome more people into Mixin Mingle, and the open space is the perfect size for the market.

Originally located just off the Square on Main Street, the Mixin Mingle space moved to the northwest corner late last year and has since drawn more attention from curious passersby.

Williams’ pieces, which are sold under her own moniker, are both timeless and one-of-akind. A self-proclaimed “old soul,” Williams enjoys melding the antiqued into something new again. She wants her customers to find a piece of jewelry that represents their individual style but also works in a variety of ways.

The time and care Williams puts into each piece is reflected in her genuine excitement at finding lasting homes for them.

She is thrilled to hear of customers heading to The Backdrop, another art-focused business on the Square, seeking “the Jo Williams jewelry” at the storefront.

“I’m most concerned with making good pieces you can enjoy wearing and pass down,” she says.

Many of her pieces found forever homes during the HoneyCraft Market art show in July, which was Williams’ first time at the market. She found the experience so enjoyable and beneficial to her business that she plans to show her jewelry at HoneyCraft Market again in the fall, she says.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea to showcase local artists, and it gave me the opportunity to show people what I do,” Williams says. “Sometimes, right in your own backyard, there are individuals that have such amazing talent.”

The market is the perfect addition to the Woodstock Farmers Market, she says, which takes place on the Square in the spring, summer and fall months and draws visitors from the surrounding areas.

Return Of The Aussies What happened to the Australian wine market?

What once was the hottest growing category in the industry became almost nonexistent in just a few short years.

A number of things caused the decline.

Most obvious was a change in style. What really caught people’s attention and palates were the rich, jammy wines from Australia that were fresh and exciting. The Australians became the darlings of wine reviewers raving about the high quality at prices that just seemed too good to be true.

So, what caused the turnaround?

First, Australian wineries were getting tired of their wines always being described as over-extracted and out of balance. Even though the consumer loved those wines, it was the purist that couldn’t understand them and complained the most, causing wineries to throttle down.

Also contributing was the multiple rough vintages the Australians suffered. What resulted were limp, lifeless wines that even the purist couldn’t admit to liking.

Another reason for the decline was that one of the largest and most aggressive Australian importers — responsible for bringing to market some of the most hedonistic and flamboyant wines — went belly-up.

Thankfully, rebel groups have broken away from the pack and have been unleashing the kind of exciting wines our palates have been starving for since the glory days.

THOMAS GOSS — SHIRAZ $15

This wine comes from one of our favorite Australian winemakers, Ben Riggs, a guy so cool we named our dog after him. Jammed with juicy blackberry fruit, dark chocolate and licorice, it shows hints of vanilla oak on the vibrant finish. It’s an outstanding value.

SHADOW CHASER — GRENACHE $14

Yes, Australia does produce other grapes, and grenache might be the most exciting and versatile one. A little lighter on the palate but big on flavor, think of it as pinot noir on steroids. Juicy and bright, this wine has flavors of red currant, ripe cherries and plum finishing with a kiss of cocoa and clove on the long, silky smooth finish. It’s delicate enough for fish yet bold enough for red meat.

KAESLER — STONEHORSE SGM $20 A delicious blend of shiraz, grenache and mourvedre exposes black cherry, ripe blueberry and kirsch on the plush entry before surrendering to a voluptuous finish sprinkled with mandarin peel and cinnamon stick.

FLEGENHEIMER — RESERVE RED $30

This is the kind of wine that seduced people into Australian wines. Wonderfully plush in the mouth, it has flavors of crème de cassis, warm plums and dried blueberries cascading over the palate before finishing with a touch of cinnamon and chocolate.

THE CHOOK — SPARKLING SHIRAZ $20

Australia is not exactly known as the hot spot for bubbles, but in the capable hands of Mr. Riggs, magic can happen. Deliciously frothy in the mouth, this sparkling wine has refreshing notes of ripe blueberry and zesty strawberry dancing on the tongue. Finishing fruity rather than sweet, it has echos of fresh red berries. And it’s not just for celebrations; this beautiful wine pairs well with food. How about maple syrup-glazed roasted porkbelly or barbecue? Yum yum.

WILD DUCK CREEK ESTATE — SPRINGFLAT SHIRAZ $45

This is a massive wine that coats the palate with captivating flavors of crème de cassis, blackberry preserves, crushed plum and chocolate-covered dates. “It was easier to buy two outfits, each a different color,” she says. “The colors helped others tell them apart when they were together.”

Her own fraternal twin girls, Leah and Molly, 4, have very different personalities.

When pregnant with her twins, some friends hosted a shower for Paulauski.

Since the genders of the babies were known, gifts were chosen with the girls in mind.

“Occasionally, I was asked if I would dress them alike. My response was always, ‘I’m not going to do the matchymatchy thing,’” Paulauski says. “I was asked this again at the shower prior to opening the gifts. My answer was the same, only to find out moments later that every clothing gift was a matching set. At first I was embarrassed by my ‘foot-in-mouth’ comments, but by the end of the afternoon I was in love with the tiny, adorable, matchy-matchy outfits.” mc

Good For Grandparents

t 84 years old, Mary Styer still baby-sits her two great-great grandchildren and, from time to time, drives to each of their homes to watch over the 7 year old and 1 year old.

Being with her family means the world to Styer, and hers is a large one. She and her husband, Edward, had six children, including two sets of twins — twin girls and a twin boy and girl. Her kids blessed her with 10 grandchildren (one of her granddaughters had twin girls, too), seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

National Grandparents Day — celebrated annually the first Sunday after Labor Day — will take place Sunday, Sept. 8 this year. But the bond between grandparents and their grandchildren is a year-round thing.

“They all call me a lot. They always ask me to pray for them,” Styer says of her grandchildren. “I feel God has blessed me with all these years to see them grow up.”

‘It means everything to them’

“I enjoy being with them,” says Styer, who lives at Heritage Woods of McHenry.

“Sometimes, I stay overnight at their homes.

They love me to sing to them, just like my own kids loved me to do. I always had such a big mouth.”

Having a large family makes gettogethers fun for Styer. A recent surprise 50th birthday party for one of her daughters at a nearby country club filled the room with 139 people.

“They came from all over to see me.

My son from Washington and one daughter from California came,” Styer says.

“All my kids are outgoing, and so are my grandchildren.”

Styer’s husband died at age 67 from an aneurysm. Fortunately, she has a daughter living in Crystal Lake and one in Woodstock.

“Between the two of them, they take care of me,” Styer says. “I always go to one of my kids for the holidays.

They fight over me.”

Not every grandparent gets to see family members as often as Styer, however.

Styer has lived at Heritage Woods for four years and says it makes her sad that so many people at Heritage Woods don’t get to see their families or grandchildren.

“With the world we live in, they are busy all the time,” she says.

But a visit from a grandchild can brighten the day so much, says Jenneen Hansen, director of marketing at Heritage Woods.

“It means everything to them when a grandchild stops by, calls or writes,” Hansen says.

grandchildren spent a lot of time with Grandma as they were growing up. Repa’s granddaughter Anna stayed on and off with Repa for two years while Anna’s mother traveled for her job. Anna now is a dress designer for Ralph Lauren.

“I was privileged that my children trusted me with their precious bundles,” Repa says. “They would let me have their children weeks at a time.”

“Sometimes I would take care of all four of them. They loved to call me Nonna,” she continues. “A lot of times, grandchildren won’t tell you their inner-most thoughts. But it is their actions that make you always feel they love you.”

The 89-year-old is a former librarian, so reading was a passion she instilled in her grandchildren. Many of her adventures with

them included visits to the library or a nearby bookstore in Chicago.

“I would purchase books for every one of their Christmas and birthday gifts,” Repa says.

“As they got older, they wanted money. They were all good students.”

Repa’s husband passed away 10 years ago.

She lived with her daughter for a while until her daughter moved to the west coast for her

Now that her grandkids are older — one is a teenager and three are in their 20s — and some of her family lives far away, Repa relies on phone calls, visits and letters to keep in touch.

“I like to write them back,” she says. “I don’t have a computer, so I do it by hand.”

Just recently, her daughter who lives in California stopped by on her way back from Europe to see her. Repa also was able to meet up with her daughter-in-law and two grandsons

for a lunch at Olive Garden.

“It was such a surprise,” Repa says. “I haven’t seen my daughter in three years. It was wonderful.”

One of her grandchildren, Brock, is earning his doctorate degree at the University of Chicago.

He comes and visits Repa on many Sundays and takes her out to lunch.

“They all make me very proud,” Repa says.

“When they were tiny and I held them in my arms, they tugged at my heart. They still do.” mc

n my six years of being a mom, I have already experienced a great number of “fashion trends” among my children.

Colin remains the simple one. My only obstacle with him is making sure I have enough “easy pants” available since he prefers comfort and a quick ability to undress to go potty.

Madelyn has had more ups and downs and fashion idiosyncrasies along the way.

She denounced anything with a snap, wore nothing but dresses for a month and then refused dresses all together.

Now, she has caught on to the mismatched sock phenomenon and can read brand names.

Needless to say, leading up to this point, she has passed through several phases of fashion.

Let’s break it down.

Phase 1: Minnie Mouse 24-7 Madelyn, in her undying love for all things Minnie Mouse, preferred dresses that emulated Minnie’s signature polka dots. Her favorite was a Minnie Mouse nightgown that, even if I could get it off of her for part of the day, she would request to put it right back on again for nap time.

Phase 2: Tutus and Tiaras Falling somewhere amid the Minnie Mouse phase was the tutu phase in which Madelyn would don a tutu — the foofier, the better — for just about any occasion, even with footie pajamas. She also usually paired this with several necklaces, bracelets and sunglasses.

I got so used to her wearing a tutu, I would often let her keep it on when we left the house, and it would take me a while to realize why so many people were smiling and complimenting her.

Phase 3: Lightning McQueen Jammies My little Gemini baby and her duality went right from Minnie Mouse and tutus to a penchant for Lightning McQueen pajamas.

Right around the time Colin was born, she discovered the movie “Cars” and watched it ad nauseam. I think she secretly had a crush on Lightning McQueen, despite the fact that he was an automobile. I was concerned that when we went to Disney World when she was 3, she would be less interested in Cinderella’s Castle and more interested in the one “Cars” display the theme park had. Luckily, she soaked up all the “magic” and traded her Lightning McQueen jammies for a Sleeping Beauty nightgown and sparkly slippers.

Phase 4: Princesses Galore This one lasted the longest and ebbed and flowed throughout her entire toddler and preschool years, even amid her love of boys’ pajamas.

At any given part of the day, she would prance around in her princess dresses, shoes, crowns and wands. She talked to her pretend animal friends, danced with a fake Prince Charming and sang songs about wishing, dreaming and magic.

Her favorite thing to do at preschool was always to play dress up. She was a Disney princess for three consecutive Halloweens and took full advantage of the princess experience at Disney World when she got all done up at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

Soon, however, tiaras and magic wands gave way to peace signs and hearts. Pink was only allowed if it was “hot pink” as opposed to “baby pink.” Her princess sleeping bag was no longer acceptable for slumber parties, and even her lunch box choice for this year’s backto-school shopping had to be stylish and cute, but not babyish.

Now, my 6-year-old has proclaimed she no longer wants her princess dresses, shoes, tiaras and wands, saying I should donate them or give them to her younger cousins. My little princess is growing up right before my eyes, and I can hardly believe it.

People always say that time goes by so fast, but I wasn’t prepared for this one. It snuck up on me, and I forgot to soak up those final magical moments.

Of course, there are plenty of pictures and memories captured, and my baby girl will always be a princess in my eyes. mc

While some may balk at wearing leather or fur for ethical reasons, designers are responding to those concerns.

New products, known as vegan leathers, are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing, as are faux fur trims.

“The sheared look is especially easy to do with faux fur,” Spyra says.

For a great transitional look, Ormsby recommends a vegan leather motorcycle jacket.

Ways To Tie A Scarf

hat if you wanted to freshen up your living room but couldn’t afford new furniture?

You’d buy new couch pillows and maybe a fluffy throw blanket.

The same line of thinking can go far when it comes time to spruce up your wardrobe.

When you want to add a little spice to a simple wardrobe but can’t afford all new clothes, buying accessories can be a good option.

And adding scarves to your attire might be just the trick.

“A scarf is an inexpensive way to expand your basic wardrobe and to keep up with the fashion trends,” says Jennifer McCloskey, owner of Tru Bleu Boutique in Barrington (www.trubleuboutique.com), who notes that scarves are her biggest-selling accessories in the boutique.

There are a variety of scarf sizes, colors, materials, shapes and prices available to shoppers anywhere, and there are countless ways to wear them.

Using a simple black, fitted camisole as the backdrop of an outfit, McCloskey shares 20 ways to wear a scarf.

For many of the examples in this article, the scarf used was a thin, cotton, large rectangular scarf measuring about 42-by-66 inches.

With each example you could always attach a special brooch or a pin to give the look a little pop of personality, McCloskey adds.

1. The Modern Loop — Place the scarf around your neck. One end should sit mid waist; the other end will be longer. Take the longer end and loop it around your neck once. Fluff it out.

2. The European Loop — Fold the scarf in half. Place the scarf around your neck so that you have a loop on one side and loose ends on the other side. Pull the loose ends through the loop.

3. The Shrug — Create sleeves in the scarf by tying together the two outside corners at each end. 4. The Classic Drape — Place the scarf loosely around your neck. This offers some coverage. It’s a romantic look that softens an outfit and adds nice detail, color and texture to a simple outfit.

5. The Bunny Ear — Place the scarf around your neck similar to how you would with the modern loop, with one end at your waist, the other end longer. Loop the longer end higher up on your neck twice. Pull the right side end under the second loop on your neck, then take the two ends and loosely tie them together. The ends will hang like drooping bunny ears. This is a dressier style, warmer around your neck and it shows off the details of a top.

6. The Turtle — Place the scarf around your neck like the modern loop. Wrap the longer end around your neck three times. Wrap the scarf tighter then previous styles to resemble a turtleneck. Tie up the ends like the bunny ears and tuck the ends into the wraps of the scarf around your neck. A very buttoned-up look, this allows you show off a necklace and your favorite scarf at the same time.

7. The Infinity — You can buy an infinity scarf … or you can create one yourself. Place the scarf around your neck like the classic drape. Tie the ends into a knot, making the scarf a circle. Twist the scarf once, making the scarf look like a figure eight. Pull it over your head. The knot should be at the back of your neck.

8. The Infinity with a Hood — Follow the same directions as the infinity. Then, lift up one of the loops and lay it on top of your head like a loose hood. This is nice to do with a scarf made of heavier material to keep warm in colder weather. This also can be done with an already

9. The Wrap — Simply open up the scarf to full size and pull it over your shoulders for a bit of added warmth.

For true warmth, this works best with a heavier material.

10. The Kimono Wrap — Open up the scarf up and place it over your shoulders, letting it drape over your arms.

Crisscross the sides in front of you and wrap it around your waist, bringing the ends to your lower back. Tie up the ends in a knot, leaving the scarf loose on your arms to allow movement. This style works best with a thinner material.

11. The Twist — Place the scarf around your neck like the modern loop. Twist the longer end; it should start to look like a rope if you are doing it right. Wrap the twisted end around your neck twice. Twist the other, shorter end.

Then, tie the sides together in a loose knot. It should look similar to the bunny ears, but with a twist!

12. The Waterfall — Place the scarf around your neck like the modern loop. Loop the longer side around your neck once. Take the inside corner of the long end and pull it up and tuck it in to the loops behind your neck.

13. The X — Drape the scarf around your neck at equal lengths. Cross the scarf once and put it behind your shoulders so the ends are hanging behind you. Cross it again in the back and bring the ends forward. Then, pull each end through the scarf layered around your neck. If done correctly, you will see an X at the scarf layers around your neck.

14. The Braid — Fold the scarf in half. Place the scarf around your neck so that you have a loop on one side and loose ends on the other side, just like the European loop. The loop side should sit just above your waist. Pull the loose ends through the loop. Twist the loop end and pull the loose ends back through the twisted loop. Repeat this step two or three times, depending on your style preference. This is a conservative yet more interesting look.

15. The Men’s Tie — Drape the scarf over your shoulders like the modern loop. Cross the long end behind and over the short end. Take the long end behind and up through the loop around your neck. Tuck the long end through the small front loop. The scarf should look just like a man’s tie. This look would work better with a shorter, rectangular, silk scarf. The ideal length would be about 54-by-18-inches.

16. The Maxi Bag — Begin with an oversized squareshaped scarf, preferably with pretty patterns and made

Tie the opposite corners together. Be sure to tie them tight so that the scarf will be able to hold items securely. A preferred size scarf to really make this Bohemian-style bag work would be at least 42-by-42. 17. The Halter Top — This style works best with an oversized rectangular scarf made of a lighter material. Fold the scarf in half. Tie two ends together and place them around your neck. Take the ends hanging at your waist and tie them together in the back. Fluff out the scarf in front, which should now have a loose, feminine look. This is a great way to cover up a bikini top and go to lunch at a restaurant near the beach or to wear over a camisole to run errands and grab lunch with the girls.

18. A Wrap Skirt — Open up the scarf and center it at your waist. Pull it around to your back, then back to the front and tie it off to the side. You can personalize the look by how you tie it or the length. This works best with an oversized rectangular scarf in a light-weight material such as light cotton or viscose. It’s good to wear as a bathing suit cover-up at the beach or over leggings.

19. Purse Strap — This is a great way to add a handle to a strapless clutch that has a secure snap or clasp. For this look, a smaller silk, rectangular scarf works best. Twist up the scarf, then tie the ends together. Slide the scarf through the clutch flap. If the scarf is long enough, you can add a bow to dress it up. The size of the scarf depends on what length strap you desire.

20. The Head Wrap — This works best with a small silk triangle scarf. If you have a square scarf, first fold it into a triangle. Place the scarf on your head with the top triangle point in the back. Wrap the two end points behind your head, covering the tip of the triangle. Tie off the ends around your head either at the back or to the side. You can be creative with the tie itself by either making it into a bow or a knot. mc

This Year’s Functional, Fashionable Luggage Trends

For some, couture is just as important as durability when it comes to luggage.

Which means that plain black bag might not cut it any more.

“People, especially people who travel a lot, they don’t want your standard black bag, though black still sells well,” says Laura Heuer, a four-year travel buyer for Wilsons Leather (www.wilsonsleather.com), which has a factory shop at the Huntley Outlet Center.

Heuer, who has 10 years of experience overall in the industry, says luggage is now meant to make a statement as much

as it is to get a person from here to there.

“People want to stand out with their luggage,” she says.

Ceal Schroeder, who co-owns Woodstock’s The Thoughtfulness Shop with her husband, Kenneth, agrees that luggage needs to be appealing to the eye, and that’s one reason she carries the popular women’s luggage line, Vera Bradley (www.thoughtfulnessshop.com/ verabradley.htm).

“When I go to the airport, I do a ‘Vera sighting’ and I count the number of people with Vera bags,” Schroeder says. “It’s very popular.”

Color

The entire purpose of Vera Bradley — a company started by two women sewing bags in their garage, Schroeder says — was to create a line of feminine-looking luggage.

And with a lineup of bright patterns and colors, the women succeeded.

“The colors are just happy colors,” Schroeder says. “Some are paisley; right now, Baroque, Indigo Pop, Heather and Cocoa Moss [are popular] colors, [as well as] Jazzy Blooms. There’s such a variety of color and combinations, and everything matches – totes, bags that carry computers … iPad covers, cell phone covers — if you like coordination, [Vera’s] the one.”

At Wilsons Leather, neons have become popular, including neon blue and neon pink, Heuer says, noting that animal prints are fashionable, too.

A trend recently started by Heys Luggage International uses paintings or photographs of artists that are placed on hard-side cases, placing an art influence in the travel industry, Heuer says.

But remember, nothing is too small to use to make a statement, she says.

“If you do have a basic black bag … luggage tags can help you personalize your bag,” Heuer says.

So can monogrammed items.

“We can put initials or a person’s name on [our bags], which is hugely popular,” says Brandon Nagel, director of sales for Island Lakebased Leather Tree (www.leathertree.com). “We are one of the few companies that offer this option. It adds a nice, personal touch to a gift and really looks fantastic.”

Material And Accessibility

One of the biggest trends in the U.S. travel market right now is hard-side luggage made out of ABS plastic or polycarbonate, Heuer says, noting such bags follow a European trend.

“Hard-side cases are popular because, for one, they’re very lightweight,” she says. “They protect what’s in your suitcase very well. They also come in many different bright colors, patterns and textures. Some of the cases that are in a solid color will have surface textures in the material.

And most of them come as a four- or an eightwheel spinner, allowing the consumer to [easily] get down an airplane aisle because you can push it ahead of you.”

One of the biggest complaints with hard cases, however, is that there are no outside pockets for easy accessibility, Heuer says.

Thus, hybrid luggage is another category that has performed very strongly at Wilsons Leather, she says.

Hybrids are either soft on the front and hard on the back, or hard on the bottom and soft on the top. The sporty look allows passengers to easily retrieve a laptop or makeup from an outside pocket when going through customs, Heuer says.

Whether using a soft-side or hard-side case, Heuer says the most popular selections are found as four-wheel or eight-wheel spinners instead of a drag-behind bag.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is Vera Bradley, which carries mostly quilted cotton bags, though some do have wheels for added maneuverability.

The benefit of fabric, is that it starts out lightweight and most items are washable, Schroeder says.

Somewhere in the middle lies distressed leather messenger bags and antique leather luggage, which are big sellers for Leather Tree.

All of the items at Leather Tree are handmade using the finest skins, Nagel says.

“Leather’s going to last you a lifetime,” he says. “It’s really durable. It will scratch a bit here and there, but in my opinion that adds character.”

Size

What size luggage is trending the most?

It’s either really big or really small, Heuer says.

“Customers that are traveling more for business are traveling smaller and tourists are traveling bigger,” she says. “Two of [our] biggest markets are tourist areas: Orlando and Las Vegas. We only sell the biggest bags [there] because people come in to shop and

want the biggest bags to pack and take home … if you’re going to pay for a big bag, you might as well have the biggest bag.”

The next big selling size, however, is a small bag for the weekend traveler looking to breeze through security, she says.

Backpacks have been really strong sellers in this size, especially business backpacks that have room for laptops, cords, chargers and a change of clothes for an overnight stay, Heuer says.

For men, a messenger bag still is important.

“Any bag that has functionality that can carry tech items — a lot of our bags have functionality to carry their smartphone and their iPad and their laptop — those do well for us,” she says.

Leather is the best-selling fabrication in a unisex, day bag silhouette, Heuer says.

Nagel agrees.

“Some go with a nice, large leather tote bag or leather backpack,” he says. “We also sell a lot of leather duffel bags to women who tend to love a lot of different zippered compartments and outside pockets for organization.”

ctress Emma Stone’s skin glows in Revlon spreads, and Taylor Swift’s eyelashes in that CoverGirl ad are just what you’re looking for.

Reality check: Stone is a 24-year-old natural red head, and Swift has not yet seen 24, so how can we possibly think we can duplicate those looks?

Beyond that, they receive a lot of high tech help to look the way they do.

For example, the National Advertising Division banned a CoverGirl campaign featuring spokesperson Taylor Swift for excessive “Photoshopping” (those eyelashes weren’t really that long), and the British Advertising Standards Authority blocked a Lancome foundation ad featuring Julia Roberts for the same reason.

Even if you’ve figured out you’re more of a Nicole Kidman than a Jennifer Lopez when it comes to complexion, Krause advises trying on foundation at a store.

“When choosing a foundation, going into a store and trying it out is the best bet,” the Ringwood resident says. “Always try it out on your jaw line, not the back of your hand, because you want to be matched to your neck, which will make your foundation look very natural. Many stores offer a color matching service in the makeup line of your choice.”

But, that’s not all. Policarpio, a professional makeup artist for two years but one of those gals who has been beautifying friends and family forever, says to keep skin type under consideration as well.

“If you are oily, stick to foundations that are mattifying or have some kind of oil control,” she says. “For dry skin, look for foundations that are moisturizing and hydrating, and if you have combination skin, determine if you are more oily or dry and choose what best suits you.”

Policarpio thinks mineral powder can work on just about everybody, especially those with sensitive skin, and Krause saves it for women looking for light coverage.

“Working with powder, you take the chance of it settling into fine lines, making you look older,” she says. “Women with mature skin should be using foundation and a setting powder or a tinted moisturizer with a setting powder.”

Policarpio likes cream-based foundations for women of a certain age because it will not settle in fine lines.

“A great makeup primer will do wonders on mature skin, and women tend to forget to use them,” she says.

“Traditionally, green-eyed people use purple shades, brown-eyed people use green shades and blue-eyed people use brown shades of eye shadow because this offers a contrast to the colors of their eyes, which gives that ‘pop’ people want,” Krause says.

“But I believe that most people can use any shade of shadow and have it be very complementary. It’s all about finding the right shades and experimenting.”

Specific shadow colors can enhance the color of one’s eyes, according to Policarpio, but makeup IS art.

“There are no rules, and if there were, they are meant to be broken,” she laughs.

“Makeup is supposed to be fun and artistic.”

A couple of Policarpio’s go-to ideas include beige and earthy tones on green-eyed ladies and charcoals and grays for a smoky look.

“For my brown-eyed girls, try shadows that are golden or peachy,” she advises. “Light browns look great and also plums for a sultry look. If you have blue eyes, mauves, bronze, copper and lilac colors will intensify those baby blues. If all else fails, stick to plum.

Plums look amazing on everyone!”

Can all ages pull off hot trends like the smoky eye, glittery shadow and “cat eyeliner?”

Both women give a thumbs up to the smoky eye.

Krause says the key is the way in which you apply the makeup, and Policarpio says to keep the intensity in check.

“The misconception of the smoky look is that you have to use black eye shadow, and that’s why many women get that ‘raccoon eye’ effect because A) the color is way too harsh, and B) the technique of the application is incorrect,” Policarpio says.

She recommends creating a dramatic look with plums and browns, noting to blend the eye shadow to create a seamless look.

And go ahead and wing out that liner for a feline eye.

“Winged liner can look good on most eyes,“ Krause says. “But if you have very hooded or wrinkly lids, you may be limited in the size and shape.”

She prefers leaving the glittery shadow to Taylor Swift and her teenage fans, while Policarpio says that, if used very sparingly, sparkly shadows can work on just about everyone.

Don’t overdo it

The makeup artists observe that the mistake common to all ages is “too much,” with girls packing on the foundation to cover blemishes and their mothers overdoing the eye makeup.

That blue shadow and spidery eyelashes may have rocked in the ’80s, but that was then.

“The biggest mistake mature women make is getting set in their ways,” Krause says. “As our skin changes, the products and techniques we use need to change as well. Products offered today are so much better and innovative than even 10 years ago. Get out there and experiment.”

Krause is keen on the brand Makeup Forever.

How To Minimize The Gluteus Maximus

T

he glute area can lose its shape and strength because of inactivity and/or aging.

Yet, it can become an attractive feature with the proper workout in place.

“Your metabolism truly will start to slow down in your late 30s and, of course, into your 40s,” says Michelle Collen, owner of Elite Warrior Training (ewtrainingwoodstock. com) in Woodstock.

Replacing an office chair with an exercise ball is an easy way to help the glute muscles, promote core balance and encourage good posture, says Collen, who sits on an exercise ball every day at work.

Whether a chair or an exercise ball is used, each side of the glutes can be flexed to gain some strength and circulate blood through the muscles, she says, and posture can be improved by keeping the shoulders back and sitting tall.

She also suggests getting up periodically at work to walk around or use stairs to work on weak glute muscles and tight hip flexors.

While that’s a start, fitness experts say resistance and cardio training need to be incorporated to build strength and reduce flab in the butt and other problem areas.

“For the average person, if you want to lose weight, you need to be working out five to six days a week,” Collen says. “You need to be varying the type of workouts that you’re doing. That’s really important. And recovery days are just as important as the days that you’re exercising.”

Although the time required for daily workouts varies, based on the exercise and someone’s fitness level, she says, the minimum should be 20 minutes a day.

Mike Spagnola, owner of Edge Strength and Conditioning (carygrovebootcamp.com) in Cary, considers resistance training the most important part of a workout. Resistance

training refers to pushing against a source of resistance, such as a weight, to increase strength.

“A common misconception Michelle Collen is that women will get bulky if they lift weights,” Spagnola says. “The reality is that women don’t produce the necessary hormones for gaining tons of muscle. So, resistance training with heavier weights will actually yield the lean, tone, fit look that women are looking for.”

Your knees, hips and shoulders should be aligned. Keep your arms at your side for stability and raise your hips off the floor, extending them as high as you can while squeezing your glutes. Keep your shoulders and head on the floor and focus on the ceiling. Hold for two seconds and release back to the floor. This exercise is great for the glutes and lower back.

Bomber Buns Kneel on the floor with a Swiss ball in front of you. In a prone position (face down), roll yourself onto the ball until it is under your pelvis, keeping your hands and feet on the floor. With your hands shoulder-width apart, bend the elbows and shift your weight slightly forward toward the floor as you lift your legs up in a wide V position. Hold for a count of two. Then bring your legs together and lower them back to the floor. This exercise benefits the glutes and lower back.

Keep your left foot firmly planted with your weight in your heel and slowly start to push your hips back. Take your time as you lower yourself toward the floor, making sure to maintain balance. Once your hands reach the floor, bring yourself slowly up to your starting position. Repeat on the same side five times and then switch to the other side for five repetitions.

Squat Circles Place your feet a little more than shoulder width apart. Lower your hips into the halfway position for a squat and shift your weight to the right. Make sure to keep your toes forward.

Continue a circular motion with your hips, lowering yourself down to a full squat position and then finishing the circle as you continue back to the top position on the left side. Keep your feet firmly planted on the floor by driving your big toe into the floor; this will create the stability you need to hold your position as you circle around. Repeat the exercise going the opposite direction. Move slowly through the motion, keeping your arms in front of you for balance. Do five circles in one direction and five in the opposite direction.

dropping your butt back and down, similar to lowering into a chair. Once your hamstrings and calves touch, drive through the heels and stand up tall. Repeat three to five sets of eight to 15 repetitions.

Too easy? Grab a dumbbell or kettlebell and hold it up against your chest to increase the difficulty.

Too hard? Use a sturdy box that is 12 to 16 inches tall and sit back onto the box until your form is good and you are strong enough to use your body weight.

Feet-Elevated Glute Bridge Grab a chair or something sturdy. Lie on your back with your heels on the chair and create a 90-degree angle with your knees.

Drive your heels hard into the chair and squeeze your glutes. The motion should create a line from your shoulder blades to your knees, and your glutes should be flexing very hard. Do not overarch your back to get higher.

Do two to three sets of 10 to 15 repetitions.

Too easy? Do more repetitions. You can get good results by doing 15 to 20 repetitions. Consider adding weights in the form of a weight plate, dumbbell or sandbag.

Simply lay it across your hips and use your hands to keep it in place.

Too hard? Lose the chair, put your feet on the ground (your knees will create a 45-degree angle). Drive through your heels until your butt is flexed and your back is straight. Reverse and repeat. mc

In May, seven local women were named to the 2013 class of McHenry County Magazine’s Women of Distinction for being representative role models as leaders in their fields and communities. Each month through December, we will feature one Woman of Distinction and share her story.

T

he position that Susan Milford holds at Centegra Health System — senior vice president of strategy and development — is enough to impress

many people.

But it’s the 49-year-old’s commitment to other organizations that really make her stand out as a leader in McHenry County, says Jamie Maravich, market president at BMO Harris Bank, who nominated Milford as a McHenry County Magazine 2013 Woman of Distinction earlier this year.

The two women are on the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County, the McHenry County Economic Development Corporation and Leadership Greater McHenry County.

“She’s a quintessential candidate in my mind because through those interactions, I can see what a strong leader she is and also what a compassionate person she is,” Maravich says. “She’s a great mother, great community contributor, just an all-around successful woman.”

Milford, who moved to Crystal Lake seven years ago to accept the VP position at Centegra, has since become extremely involved in her county in a variety of ways.

Part of the reason she dove into so many different organizations is because her position involves marketing strategy and community outreach, she says.

“It was a way for me to get involved in the community in a quick way by getting involved in some of these boards,” she says. “It was a way to meet community leaders and learn a lot about the county. So, that’s what started it. I wanted to represent Centegra in a positive way and wanted to fulfill that job in the best way, so I needed to be part of the community.”

But that wasn’t the only reason she became so active.

The Roman Catholic, who is a lector at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Crystal Lake, says her strong faith guides her actions as much as anything.

“It’s all about giving back, the golden rule,” Milford says. “I’ve had a lot of blessings in my life, so if I can impact others positively, I think that’s what we need to do is pay it forward.”

One of the ways Milford has tried to give back is through Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County.

“I really wanted to serve on a board that gave back to the community, and I was particularly interested in something that dealt more with children,” says Milford, who, with her husband of 27 years, Mark, has three children, ages 18, 21 and 25. “We have been blessed, and I know there are a lot of children out there who haven’t had the [same] advantages as my children, and I believe in strong mentorship in children’s lives, and Big Brothers Big Sisters does a good job of that.”

Milford also is the current vice chair of the McHenry County Economic Development

Corporation board, which she will chair this fall.

“That was the first board I got involved with in McHenry County,” she says. “The focus really is on making things better throughout the county and having all the businesses work together for the good of McHenry County. In that group, not only are you dealing with all of the employers, but you’re dealing with the 309,000 population … and organizations that are county-wide can really help us progress.”

Her involvement in Leadership Greater McHenry County, also a county-wide organization, is similar in its direction, says Milford, a 2008 alumna.

The group develops community leaders through monthly meetings during a yearlong course in which participants learn about different industries, communities and organizations in the county, she says. Many graduates of LGMC go on to sit on different nonprofit boards.

For her leadership and service to others, Milford was chosen as the recipient of one of seven 2013 McHenry County Magazine Women of Distinction Awards. She was awarded with her fellow winners at a luncheon May 8 at Crystal Lake Country Club, where nearly 200 people supported their fellow community leaders.

“People have respect for her leadership and strategic planning skills,” Maravich says.

“In board meetings, we have to make tough decisions and sometimes share different points of view. Susan always comes from it looking at the big picture, and she always gets people excited about it in the right way. She makes decisions for the right reasons and she always explains those reasons in proper detail.”

Still, it’s more than leadership on a grand scale — it’s the little things that make Milford shine, Maravich says.

“She has a passion for Girls on the Run,” Maravish says. “Both of us being mothers, just to see she had early on embraced this organization that makes girls feel good about themselves and being positive contributors to the community, the way she spoke about that really impressed me and really resonated with me.” mc
