Vein Disease Does Not Just Occur Among Older Patients

Sean Devine’s experience was a little different.

He became a patient of IVS at age 18. “I knew I had vein disease; I had big, ropey varicose veins and I had sclerotherapy done by another doctor.

The problem was I never got better until I saw Dr. Rivard.”

Dr. Rivard notes: “Both these young patients had serious vein disease, actually among the more advanced cases I’ve seen. In Sean’s instance it was obvious, but he had previously received the wrong treatment, which actually complicated his case management. Megan’s situation was that the disease was not visible and neither her family nor doctor, plausibly, thought vein disease was likely in one so young.”

VEIN DISEASE DOES NOT JUST OCCUR AMONG OLDER PATIENTS That vein disease is just a disease of the elderly is a harmful myth. The facts are that vein disease will occur in about a quarter of the population.

The primary cause is heredity, which accounts for about 80% of incidence, not aging. However, vein disease is less likely to be visible in young patients because the disease has not had as long nto w hproduce e r a l d . c onoticeable m /m a g a zeffects i n e in veins near the

skin’s surface. So close attention must be paid to other symptoms like pain, swelling, skin discoloration or poor wound healing. A definitive diagnosis needs to be made via Doppler sonography skillfully employed by a Certified Sonographer.

Board Certified Phlebologists, like those at Illinois Vein Specialists, know this, but the general public and even many physicians, whose primary medical education predates 2008, the first year that the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease became its own medical specialty, do not.

VEIN DISEASE IS NOT ALWAYS ACCOMPANIED BY PAIN A related and equally harmful myth is that there is no need to worry about vein disease if there is no pain. This is as foolish as saying high blood pressure is not a problem because there is no pain. (In fact vein disease is actually high blood pressure within the venous system.) Rivard notes: “I’ve had more than one patient come to me for consultations after their doctor had essentially said: ‘If it doesn’t hurt, don’t worry about it.’ Vein disease is real disease and compromised venous circulation must be repaired or it will become more severe and may impact a host of other medical issues.”

A SPECIAL NOTE FOR MEN The incidence of vein disease is more common among women because gestational hormones and a gravid uterus are also causes of the disease. However, as was noted above, vein disease is real disease; it is not simply about cosmetics.

Too many men think varicose veins don’t need repair because they aren’t really concerned about how their legs look. This attitude is likely causing them needless pain and may complicate other medical issues from wound healing, neuropathy and even congestive heart disease.

Local artist recalls path leading to her artistic career

With Kim Vorel I grew up in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, and moved to the Chicago area in 1984. In the mid ’90s, after a successful career as an Information Center Analyst and Operational Planning Administrator, I decided to go back to school to study my first love — art.

As an undergraduate, my focus was drawing and watercolor painting when I wasn’t busy making sculpture. When I transferred to Northern Illinois University I rediscovered a love of metals that

was born when I was in high school. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2002, and continued on to complete a Masters of Fine Arts in 3-D Studio with an emphasis in Metal and Jewelry in December 2005.

In January of 2004 I introduced the Jewelry/Metals program to the McHenry County College art department in Crystal Lake. The program has grown considerably in the past 10 years — the studio size has expanded and additional equipment and processes have been added. The schedule now includes two levels of curriculum — Jewelry I and Jewelry II, as well as advanced techniques and an expanded schedule of classes.

I also have been teaching at the College of Lake County in Grayslake since 2006, covering Beginning Jewelry, Art Appreciation, and Art History. I recently joined the staff as jeweler at Old World Gem and Jewelry in McHenry. I maintain a private studio where I create art, commissioned art jewelry, and continue to develop and offer workshops and lectures.

I have been a member of the Chicago Metal Arts Guild (CMAG) and the Society of North American Goldsmiths, (SNAG) since 2003. I have served on the CMAG Events Committee, hosting and conducting

I couldn’t find a willing participant, I was busy making things. I “created” with all the usual childhood crafts — potholders, bead looms, burnt matches, gum wrappers, and crochet. I graduated to handmade holiday gifts, birthday cakes, and Halloween costumes. When I went back to school there wasn’t a question as to what my heart wanted — it was art. I haven’t looked back. I am fortunate to earn a living making art and sharing that knowledge and experience with others.

Desire.” Written for the stage by Tennesee Williams, southern belle Blanche is reduced to living with her sister Stella and Stella’s blue-collar husband, Stanley. But Blanche is harboring a dark secret that threatens to unravel her genteel facade, hurtling them all toward an epic battle of wills.

Kuranda. “This is a chance for audiences to see a great work of art come to life.” But how does this on-stage perfection come to life by opening night?

Kuranda believes the key to producing such a great work starts with the script, then you add the director and the creative team of designers, and then layer on the actors. “It’s like musical alchemy,” says Kuranda. “It’s wonderful and rare. You always hope for magic.” However, magic sometimes comes with a price.

“Cast dynamics of collaboration are a tricky thing. A cast can be talented and never really come together, but every so often you luck out and it all clicks on the stage,” says Kuranda.

For most of the actors at Williams Street Repertory, getting prepared for a part — transforming into a character — depends on the individual.

Some transform from the outside in, others form an emotional core first. “In ‘Streetcar,’ the actors are physically fit and sexually attractive. However, so much of acting is about behavior and n w h e r a l d . c o m /m a g a z i n e

psychology and in ‘Streetcar’ a lot of this play is about conflict, how the characters come to terms with changes in their world,” says Kuranda.

“It is an amazing way to spend two hours that will change your life in a great way, right here in McHenry County,” adds Kuranda.

Tickets for the show, which will run for three weekends Friday through Sunday, starting April 24, are $35.50 for general admission.

“It’s the publicity and the energy to support the show that infects all aspects of life with our community, sponsors, advertisers, grantees and especially audience members,” says Kuranda.

“But we can’t keep doing what we do without [the public] and [its] continued support through donations and ticket sales.”

“But when I was a kid it was very intimidating for me to think about getting on a stage in front of people.”

Kay started off her performance career singing acoustically alongside her husband and Bob Brady at local venues under the moniker Aunt Janet, when David Kerr and Pete Gil approached her with interest in starting a five-piece rock band.

“The rest is history,” Kay adds.

“We’ve gone through everything you can imagine as a band — we’re like a family,” Kay says.

But life in the band isn’t just all fame and glory — most of the members are juggling full-time jobs, families and everything that comes along with that.

Skating Into Fiction Crystal Lake writer publishes first e-book

W

hen writing fiction, a key piece of advice often offered to hopeful authors is to “write what you know.” Contemporary romance author Elizabeth Harmon has done just that with the publication of her first book, “Pairing Off,” set in the world of competitive figure skating.

“I ice-skated as a child, never competitively, but it was something that I enjoyed,” Harmon said. “You take your experiences and memories and they translate into your characters.”

“Pairing Off” is an e-book published

by Carina Press, the digital branch of Harlequin. The novel, published February 2015, is the first in Harmon’s “Red Hot Russians” series. It pairs the characters of American figure skater Carrie Parker and

Russian skating champion Anton Belikov as they heat up the ice rink to go for gold.

Her second book, “Turning it On,” will be published at the end of June, while the third book is set for publication in March 2016.

The Crystal Lake resident and writer said that she has had an interest in writing all her life.

“Whenever we had a creative writing assignment in English class, I got into it,” Harmon said. “It was my favorite thing to do. I read a lot as a kid and it gave me good instincts for telling stories.”

Harmon said that her writing didn’t take a serious turn until she worked in advertising and sales in the Chicago area and would commute by train to the city every day in the early 1990s.

“I needed something to do on the train,” she said.

Harmon became a stay-at-home mom in 1997 and started freelance writing, but her desire to write novels never subsided. She wrote a historical romance in 2009 and joined Romance Writers of America, an association that supports romance authors, in 2010.

She began working with an agent in 2013 when she finished “Pairing it Off.” The timing could not have been better for Harmon when the book was pitched to publishers — the 2014 Winter Olympics were taking place in Sochi, Russia.

Harmon was in touch with a Russian blogger living in Moscow who was a vital source of information and added authenticity to her book, she said.

Acting Out! Youth take center stage at Sage Studio

T

he Sage Studio for Youth at the Raue Center for Performing Arts offers a variety of theater classes and experiences for kids ages 7 through 18. Kate Wilford, general manager for Raue Center For The Arts, and Amanda Flahive, Sage Studio program manager, took some time to talk with feature writer Elizabeth Harmon about what makes their program unique, and the benefit of youth arts programs: “Study after study has shown that arts involvement helps students in a variety of ways, from developing public speaking and problem solving skills, and learning to work together. The benefits extend far beyond the stage,” said Flahive.

Tell us a little about what the Sage Studio for Youth offers.

2007, with the dream of several of our founding board members to offer theater classes. With the help of Kimberly Berg Sanders, daughter of founding board member Susen Berg and a teacher at New Trier and Cary-Grove High School, we started the program. Since then, it has evolved and changed to the multi-faceted program we have now.

Flahive: Our initial program covered theater in a general way, now we focus on specific areas. It’s more of a studio approach to training, that prepares students to work in the world of professional theater. In 2012, we started a Musical Theater Workshop for students age 14-18 and it went so well that we’ve expanded it into a whole slate of classes.

Flahive: Our Sage Studio Junior program is for ages 7 through 14, and our Sage Studio program is for 14 through 18 year olds. Some of our studio classes are open to 14 year olds, others are for 15 and up.

What role does Raue Center’s Williams Street Repertory play in the program?

Flahive: At the time that we were revamping the Sage Studio program, we were also starting Williams Street Repertory. I came in 2011 to be part of Williams Street Repertory, and because I’d worked as an actor and instructor, I was asked to be part of creating the studio-focused program.

Many of our instructors come from Williams Street Repertory, and one of our musical theater students was cast in “Hands On A Hardbody,” which WSR performed in November and December. This was a nice perk we didn’t expect but hoped might happen, so we’re thrilled that it’s come to pass.

Flahive: The Sage Studio for Youth is a suite of classes covering all aspects of theater, including musical theater, acting, improv, and technical theater, for kids ages 7 through 18.

Our classes are taught by working theater professionals, which makes our program unique.

How many students are enrolled?

Flahive: All together we have about 50 to 75 kids enrolled, however, we like to cap each class with a maximum of 16 students. We like to offer a hands-on approach, which is especially important in the creative arts. It also encourages students to get to know their instructors, because making connections is so important in professional theater.

Do you have any special programs planned for summer?

Flahive: Summer is our busiest season. Our signature class is the Musical Theater Workshop, which is a three week intensive, comprehensive look at auditions, acting, singing and dance. We bring in guest instructors from Chicago, from Broadway and locally. We’ll offer our high school program sessions in both June and July. Our Junior Musical Theater Workshop will be held in June, with one week for students ages 7 to 10, and another for ages 11 to 14.

The workshops conclude with a showcase performance that’s open to the public. The high school program culminates in an audition with a professional director.

Our July high school program will also offer No Holes Bard, which covers Shakespeare and stage combat. Students will take a passage from Shakespeare, examine the text and what it means, then perform it, incorporating stage combat techniques. The class is taught by two WSR ensemble members who are trained in Shakespeare and stage combat so the students will learn fencing and hand to hand combat in a safe environment.

One of the characteristics that Vohs-Demann stresses for those searching for a voice teacher is that the teachers themselves perform regularly.

“They know what it’s like to be in front of an audience and they know how to help their students overcome the feats and obstacles that get in the way,” she says. “Also if a teacher is continually growing, their students continually grow. If they stop pushing the envelope in their own lives, at some point, the students will hit a wall.”

From beginners to experienced singers, A Place to Shine Music has a class that will cater to everyone.

“There are a lot of singers out there,” Vohs-Demann says. “If you want to sing, find a way to do it. Keep practicing and don’t give up.”

Got A Getaway?

I

n most instances, a simple trip to Target — alone — with a Starbucks in my hand is all the vacation I need. However, desperate times call for desperate measures and only a tropical location with an adult beverage in hand will do.

As I write this, my husband and I are preparing for a trip to the Dominican Republic, sans kids. This is not the first time we have been away without the kids, but it will be the longest. We are traveling with some friends of ours who have never been away from their kids for more than a weekend.

While our usual pre-trip stress is setting in, theirs’ is at a fever pitch.

Our first real trip away from the kids was a few years’ back. My husband had won a trip to Jamaica through work and we were desperate to get away. We hadn’t had a real vacation since our honeymoon. Life in the Midwest with two small children had me feeling like the walls were closing in on me, since I was home with them all day with only brief respites while they were at preschool. I needed a break from the day-to-day. Even the simple tasks like making dinner and lunches became daunting.

Besides getting my husband and I ready with passports, bathing suits, flip-flops and suntan lotion, I had to prepare the kids and my mother-in-

law for the hectic schedule ahead. My in-laws asked if we could have picked a weekend that wasn’t so jam-packed to leave to which we responded, “This is every weekend.”

The kids were two and four years old, and pick-up and drop-off between two different preschools had to be coordinated. Skating lessons, birthday parties, karate and various other demands which I perform as second nature needed to be carefully detailed and laid out in a five-page report. I’m pretty sure I even drew up a flowchart in case my mother-in-law proved to be more of a visual learner.

A great deal of my stress laid in the fact that, as I have admitted before, I am a control freak. I like things done a certain way and was worried that all my efforts to keep my troops in line would be thwarted by missed nap times and one too many trips to McDonald’s.

By the time I got to Jamaica, I had myself in such a tizzy over preparing to be gone it took me a full day to decompress. I cried myself to sleep the first night as guilt set in that I had “up and left” my babies. That trip came to a screeching halt after only two days of fun-inthe-sun, because my husband’s insulin pump, which he depends on for his Type 1 Diabetes, stopped working.

Since then, we have been fortunate to take several more trips both through his work and on our own, and each time it gets easier

and easier to leave the kids. Despite the effort and stress it takes to prepare in order to hit the pause button on our day-to day lives, it serves as a great time for my husband and me to reconnect. It is time for us to strengthen our relationship, let loose and have some fun … and a chance for our kids to miss us and for my husband and me to miss our kids. In the end, we all win (especially when we come back with souvenirs).

While we have the whole tropical getaway down to a science, our friends are struggling with the minute details of how many sundresses and bathing suits to pack, along with how they will communicate with their children.

Meanwhile, I’ve taken to stocking the fridge with Lunchables® (something that is saved only for special occasions) and the instant macaroni and cheese that I stopped buying awhile back because that white powder scares me. It is all to set my mind at ease, that my kids will be happy, comfortable and not missing me when grandma doesn’t make the mac and cheese the way I do. I also know that no matter how many nights they stay up past their bedtimes and how much my mother-in-law spoils them, I can always re-program them when I get back.

This is not to say I don’t still get the tug in my heart and pang of anxiety through me when I hug and kiss the kids goodbye before we depart. Of course, that first umbrella drink by the pool is usually all I need to let my worries melt away.

Recognizing Sensory Processing Disorder With Anthony J. Ebel, DC, CACCP

S

ensory processing disorder goes by many names — sensory integration dysfunction, neurosensory dysfunction, etc. — but no matter what you call it, the underlying causes don’t change.

What’s more, we strongly feel that sensory issues are one of the most commonly missed diagnoses out there.

A properly trained health care provider understands that many common conditions such as ADD/ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and many learning and behavioral issues have sensory-based challenges, and therefore proper care of these challenges must address the sensory processing aspect.

In most cases, once these sensory challenges are finally realized, therapy is the first option. If done properly this care is usually given by specifically trained occupational and/or physical therapists in a “sensory gym” or similar setting. While we support this form of therapy whole-heartedly, the option of pediatric chiropractic care offers a different approach — one that looks to address the root cause of the challenges and imbalances.

So, what causes it?

Our sensory system is a “read and react” system.

What this means is that our body is programmed to respond appropriately to environmental stimuli.

This programming occurs throughout life and can be thought of as “sensory learning” or processing.

The clearest example of this is a child placing their hand upon a hot stove. Once it is done, it is rarely done again. This is because the burning and painful sensation of the hot stove becomes ingrained in our sensory memory, and helps prevent us from making this mistake again. All sensory patterns in the body work in this way.

But kids who suffer from SPD have an inability to properly perceive their environment, whether that be from problems in vision, hearing, balance and coordination, or touch and tactile sense.

The best way to understand this is to think of the nervous system as the “air traffic control system” for the body. It’s constantly perceiving the environment through its millions of sensory receptors and nerve endings, and then “reading and responding” accordingly.

The brainstem and upper neck regions essentially act as the “air traffic control tower,” largely responsible for the processing, integrating, organization, and “filtering” of sensory information from all over the body. In other words, it is in charge of letting certain sensory information “in” and moves it up the ladder to higher brain regions filtering out sensory information not deemed important enough to retain.

Kids who suffer from things like SPD, ADD/ADHD, and ASD have an inability to properly process, integrate, coordinate, and adapt to their sensory environments. All of these issues are really neurological input and coordination problems, not output and behavior problems.

Put frankly, it’s not an environmental issue, it’s an adaptation issue. To best help these kids we certainly want to help improve their environment wherever possible, but the main thing they need is a better ability to process and adapt to it.

This can be caused by a variety of different things. What is CrossFit? With Javier Babin

C

rossFit is an exercise program designed to measure fitness and obtain quantifiable results. It provides a community of support which serves as a means of accountability and positive reinforcement. Friendships are formed, and the individuals in class become a family. It’s not just a program for the most skilled, but an inclusive regimine designed for all levels.

A few important CrossFit terms: WOD — Workout Of the Day. This is the combination of exercises, prescribed weights, and time or reps allowed for each exercise.

RX — Doing the WOD exactly as prescribed. If one “RXs” the workout, then she has done the weight, reps, and exercises exactly how they were prescribed.

Box — CrossFit centers are not called gyms, they are called “boxes.” They resemble a simple “box” containing bars, weights, and ropes. No TVs, no mirrors, and no cute posters.

When you begin CrossFit, you need to understand that we are all at different points on a fitness journey together. Some may be further ahead, and others a bit behind. Some individuals may have found themselves in a rut in their regular fitness training.

Others are overcoming self-imposed obstacles.

Whether we are in great shape or are looking to improve our health, we all can benefit from a program that is more than lifting weights. CrossFit is a lifestyle.

As fitness coaches, we are more concerned with your safety than we are about how much weight you can lift or how fast you can get a workout done.

Our goal is to help you develop the correct habits to perform the WOD unharmed and injury free.

Everyone goes through the beginning phase where it is a learning process. Once safety is a habit, we can move forward to be more effective at the WOD. Although following the RX is vitally important to the effectiveness of the program, we don’t want you to be afraid to scale down if necessary. We highly recommend that if you need assistance or lighter weights to get through the entire WOD, then choose a lighter weight that is still challenging.

All CrossFitters wish they could RX each workout from day one. In reality, it takes time to develop the correct form and technique to accomplish this goal. CrossFit includes a variety of workouts derived n w h e r a l d . c o m /m a g a z i n e

from gymnastics, weightlifting, metabolic conditioning (cardio), and even bodyweight exercises. It is nearly impossible for someone to be great at all of them from the beginning. Sharing Space As boomers age, families turn to in-law suites

T

he combined factors of aging baby boomers, longer life expectancies and seniors increasingly wanting to maintain their independence, along with the downturn in the economy, inspired home builder Gerstad Builders in McHenry to introduce its multi-generational Prestwick plan model home, which features an in-law suite.

“We thought we’d offer a unique product to families trying to consolidate their households,” said Roger Gerstad, the company’s president.

“Seniors often would prefer to stay in their own home, but sometimes aren’t able to handle the maintenance and chores associated with the house,” said Gerstad.

“Through this in-law suite, they can still have their independence without the burden.”

Gerstad said the in-law suite is not just a basic guest room. The independent entryway allows residents to come in and go out without disturbing the family. “It’s important that seniors can feel freedom and independence so they don’t feel like a burden to the rest of the household. Seniors still want to have their independence,” said Gerstad.

The model, Gerstad said, is an affordable way to merge two families, including as many as three generations, into one household.

This is done while maintaining privacy for both families. While there’s a shared kitchen and common area, the in-law suite has its own bedroom, bathroom, social area, single-stall garage and outside entry.

The Prestwick model is a ranch-style home so that everything is on one level.

The in-law suite costs approximately $60,000-$65,000 and typically adds to the home’s resale value.

“We don’t have the programs that a senior retirement community offers, but this still provides some benefits. Seniors often fear moving into what they perceive as an institutional setting. We like that this arrangement wouldn’t make them feel like that,” said Gerstad. “The kids can feel like they can watch over mom and dad and have them close by, while they can simply close a door and have their private lives and go their own separate ways.”

Faux The Love Of Art & Friendship Two local women build successful design business on heart, and art

ina Engel and Heidi Sutherland, co-owners of Faux The Love Of It in Crystal Lake, have a lot in common.

As children, both loved art

and considered careers in the field, but later chose to become teachers instead. Both have families and rediscovered their passion for art during their years as stay-at-home moms.

Yet it’s their differences that have made them successful business partners.

“We’re very much opposites, which is probably one of the things that helps us work so well together. I have her husband’s personality, and she has my husband’s personality,” Engel says.

“She’s easy going and relaxed, while I’m a little more type-A,” Sutherland says.

Since establishing their business in 2005, Engel and Sutherland have become known for their faux finishing, murals, cabinetry and furniture finishes. They use a variety of materials including glazes, textures and plasters for faux finishing and a variety of paints and lacquers for cabinetry and furniture painting.

Engel’s love of art began early. “Even in elementary school, I really had a passion to be creative in that way,” Engel says. “I took classes from a neighbor who was an artist, and in junior high and high school I took classes and knew that in college I wanted to study art.”

At Northern Illinois University, she studied graphic design, but found the digital focus limiting. “I enjoyed working in different areas, such as photography and jewelrymaking, and also loved working with kids. I thought it would be great to teach, helping them learn to be creative, and then working on my own projects during my free time,” she says.

Sutherland also had an early passion for art and design, but also for health and fitness. In college at

The University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, she considered two widely different career paths, interior design or health education. “My parents encouraged me to go into health education because I would be better able to find a job,” she says.

6 This kitchen boasted cherry cabinets in an orange hue. They were overstained to richen the color, while perimeter cabinets were painted white and glazed.

Both women entered the classroom, Engel in Wheeling Elementary District 21, Sutherland at Cary Junior High School, and despite their hopes, neither were able to pursue art on their own, until they left teaching to become stay-at-home mothers.

Engel got into woodworking and crafts, and began to create wall-hangings and plaques, which she sold at craft fairs. Sutherland put her interior design talents to work in her home, then in the homes of friends and, like Engel, took painting classes to enhance her skills. As friendly referrals led to paying work, Sutherland began to realize she had a burgeoning business on her hands. “I knew I didn’t want to go back into the classroom so I thought this might be a good direction,” she says.

The women met in 2004, while volunteering on a charity home renovation and housewalk in Oak Park. “We realized we were both from the same area, we started talking and hit it off. Sutherland had a big job coming up, and needed some help, and then I needed help on a job, so we collaborated and realized it was much more fun to work as a team,” Engel says.

Their collaboration enabled both women to take on larger projects, as well as balance the demands of their families. “We scheduled our jobs around school schedules,” Sutherland says.

They also realized that their different skill sets complemented one another. Engel loves working with textures and large areas, while the detail-oriented Sutherland enjoys the refined, close work. Sutherland loves working one on one with clients to choose colors and design elements, and is also Faux The Love Of Its research and development person, experimenting with new products and techniques. Engel keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes, handling bookkeeping, ordering and scheduling jobs.

“The work seems easy, because we like doing different things and each of us can take the lead on a project, depending on what is needed. We know we can count on each other, and we don’t worry about dividing the work evenly, because we’re both willing to do what needs to be done. We don’t miss out on family obligations because the other person

hen Heather Krempasky moved into her home in Cary, her kitchen was filled with solid, well constructed maple kitchen cabinets.

“We liked the cabinets,” she explains. “We didn’t want to toss them. We just didn’t like the color.”

Enter Tina Engel and Heidi Sutherland from Faux The Love Of It in Crystal Lake.

Together, they visited her kitchen, weighing the options of painting vs. staining, and came up with a plan that would transform the room from basic to brilliant.

According to Engel, the painting process used at Faux The Love Of It provides a factory-smooth finish, leaving existing cabinets looking brand new. The island

was painted a matte black, and the cabinets were given an off-white color and a brown glaze, for an elegant aged look.

“Everyone thinks we completely redid the cabinets,” Krempasky says. But the cost, and the time commitment, were nothing compared to the re-facing of the cabinets she had envisioned. The kitchen remained functional except for a single week, and within three, the whole project was complete.

Krempasky couldn’t be happier.

“It was amazing how transformative it has been to our kitchen,” she says. “I absolutely love it and recommend it to everyone with a similar project. It was a fantastic experience.”

can pick up the slack,” Engel says.

Projects begin with an in-home consultation to discuss finish and design options, and to measure the space. After a bid is sent to the client, and accepted, samples are created and the project is scheduled.

Communicating with clients throughout the process is crucial, the women say. “We try to help people be timeless and avoid things that will be out of style quickly,” Sutherland says.

They say that metallics and metallic plasters currently are among the most popular faux finish choices. With kitchen renovations, any color of white is popular right now.

“Our job is to make sure the new faux finish or cabinetry project complements existing elements in the home,” Sutherland says.

One of their most memorable jobs, applying a faux finish to a domed ceiling above a spiral staircase, not only tested their design and painting skills, but also their physical stamina. “They had to build a platform for us to set up our scaffold on so we could reach the dome 23 feet in the air,” Engel says.

Sutherland laughs, remembering. “There were places we really had to stretch to reach the edges of the dome. The technique was challenging too, because the temperature in the house wasn’t regulated and there was a concern areas would dry too fast creating an uneven finish. We had to work quickly to get a consistent finish. It really came out beautiful.”

The women have plenty of fun working together. They enjoy the variety and creativity of what they do. “We have fun, we get along, I know I can count on her. It’s a nice partnership and a nice friendship,” Engel says.

Not Your Everyday Farm Girl Woodstock woman uses farming role as steward, educator

She is an active member of the U.S. Dairy Sustainability Council which aims to reduce carbon emissions throughout the dairy supply chain. At the farm, Kooistra, her husband and staff incorporate measures to decrease the farm’s carbon footprint and reduce waste.

“Farmers were the original environmentalists,” Kooistra said. “We need to think about the next generation and the land and making sure we leave things better for the next generation.”

G

ot milk? Linnea Kooistra does.

Kooistra is a third generation dairy farmer.

Today she and husband, Joel, run the dairy farm that has been in his family for generations. There are more than 250 dairy cows on the farm, along with about 200 young animals, mostly calves, making it one of the largest dairy farms in McHenry County.

“We love what we do. It is a part of who we are,” Kooistra said. “We are the stewards of the earth, taking care of the animals.”

The farm produces milk and grain in a yearround operation.

“For 365 days of a year the cows need to be milked, fed, cared for and there are times when the cows have to come before family, birthdays and other occasions,” Kooistra said. “We try to make sure we keep the cows comfortable and healthy and they’ll give a higher quality of milk and more milk too.”

For Kooistra, milk isn’t just a part of the business. It is a passion, from the care and collection of milk to making sure school children and families in need have access to it. As part of the National Dairy Council, she supports initiatives to provide milk to families using food pantries as well as providing milk to schools.

Kooistra makes time for national work, such as the council, as well as serving her local community. In 2011 Kooistra was the first woman in Illinois honored with the Prairie Farmer Magazine Master Farmer award for her work in the community.

For this Woodstock woman, dairy farming is more than a business. It is an opportunity to be a steward of the land and an educator to those willing to take the time to stop, listen and learn.

“We want every family to have the nutrition provided by milk,” she said.

Kooistra also is a proponent of education, both in the local schools of Harvard District 50, as well as the greater population. Each year, hundreds of local school children visit her farm and Kooistra provides continuing education programs for teachers to learn more about agriculture. Local families to farmers and business executives from around the world have visited the Kooistra Dairy Farm to learn about milk as well as farm management.

“I like to explain to people and teach,” she said. “When it comes to milk, I tell people to buy the cheapest out there because they are all the same in nutrition. Make sure your kids get their milk because it is so important to building strong bones.”

Growing up in the dairy farming traditions, Kooistra and her husband knew what it would take to manage and keep a successful farm. Yet, today’s farm looks far different than the operation their grandparents managed.

Longtime broadcaster on agribusiness for WGN Radio, Orion Samuelson nominated Kooistra for the McHenry County Magazine Women of Distinction award, citing her dedication to the community and the farming business.

“Linnea is passionate as she serves on boards or committees, be it education, church or community,” Samuelson wrote.

Kooistra is involved with the United Methodist Foundation of Northern Illinois, an active member with the Harvard School District 50 Foundation and she serves on the Zoning Board of Appeals for McHenry County. She became involved with the county’s planning and zoning committees starting in the early 90s when new home construction was booming.

“I thought the farmers needed a voice on the decisions that were being made,” she said.

Summer is a special time for Kooistra as she enjoys spending extra time with her two grandchildren, Joely and Owen.

“I want them to understand my love of the land and how important the care of the land is,” she said.

Tasty To-Go Benedict’s La Strata opens grab and go location

reakfast lovers in McHenry County can rejoice with the opening of Taste of Benedict’s, a grab and go specialty shop that also will house a gift shop. Born from Benedict’s La Strata, restaurant owner John Pilafas says the grab and go location is scheduled to be up and running come April. It is directly across the street from Benedict’s La Strata at 39 N. Williams St. in downtown Crystal Lake.

“We started working on it about four or five months ago,” Pilafas says. “I’m excited about the products we are bringing in.”

While Benedict’s La Strata is known as an upscale breakfast and lunch restaurant, customers can expect the same quality food items, and much more, at Taste of Benedict’s, according to Pilafas.

All the food items will be freshly prepared in the kitchen at Benedict’s La Strata and then shuttled across the street to Taste of Benedict’s. Customers can now have the convenience of making a quick stop to pick up a tasty meal or unique gift item.

“I look forward to having a lot of fun with good products,” Pilafas says. “I can’t wait.”

it’s time to fire up the grill, get wood in the smoker, pop a can of beer and take up residence in the backyard for a great summer of barbecue. There are no foods as satisfying and primal as barbecue.

So as we approach the season, what better time to answer some questions from my weekend warrior BBQ’ers (or as I affectionately refer to them and myself …“Q” heads or Pit Crew)?
