I’m a small town girl. Always have been. And it’s in seasons like this one when I am consistently reminded of why I enjoy living outside the city — there’s so much to do only steps outside our front doors!

Setting The Stage Local venues offer great choices for live entertainment

inding great entertainment doesn’t always mean a trip to Chicago.

McHenry County residents are fortunate to have an array of outstanding local venues, the Raue Center for the Arts in Crystal Lake and the Opera House in Woodstock, which showcase top national talent, as well as great local spots to catch a favorite band and a good time.

At the Raue Center, about a third of the productions are based locally, with the balance coming from outside the area. In September, Tex-Mex roots-rockers Los Lobos performed as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. “We had a full house out on a Thursday night, dancing in their seats,” says Raue’s director, Richard Kuranda.

Since coming to the Raue five years ago, one of Kuranda’s goals has been to expand the core audience with affordable community, and cabaret-style performances. The Williams Street Repertory, launched three years ago, has grown “by leaps and bounds. We are ecstatic with their success,” says Kuranda.

The Lucy’s Comedy Café series features top comedians, many in the area to perform at Chicago’s renowned comedy club, Zanies. Rather than using theater seating, Lucy’s shows create an intimate atmosphere, by putting the performer and 160-member audience together on the stage.

The 1890 Woodstock Opera House was built as a public use facility and remains one today. “We’re doing exactly what we’ve always done, just more of it,” says Executive Director John Scharres.

theater or adjacent Stage Left café. Private parties, meetings, art exhibits and community events take place in the first floor public rooms.

About two-thirds of the Opera House’s presentations are either local talent, or outside talent brought in by a local group. “Someone comes to us and says ‘I’d like to put on X kind of show’ and we walk them through the process,” Scharres says.

The Woodstock Fine Arts Council’s ongoing Creative Living lecture series brings in noted authors, experts and celebrities. Guitarist Leo Kottke’s next performance is presented by Woodstock resident Ed Hall’s William Tell Productions. The Opera House also is home to two local theater companies, and the annual production of “The Nutcracker” by Crystal Lake’s Judith Svalander School of Dance, has become a holiday tradition.

Scharres works with booking agencies who keep him informed about acts appearing in the Chicago area, that could make a side trip to Woodstock, such as Ed Asner’s one-man show portraying FDR, and Loretta Swit’s one-woman performance as Eleanor Roosevelt.

Occasionally, a national performer will have local ties, such as Celtic/American roots music duo Switchback, featuring former Woodstock resident and Opera House volunteer Martin McCormack.

Because of the venue’s small size, some shows are out of the question. “We’ll never have ‘Disney on Ice,’” Scharres says.

Nevertheless, acts such as Motown legends The Temptations have pushed the limit of what Scharres believed the stage could accommodate.

“Between the backing band, and four guys singing and dancing, I kept watching to make sure no one fell off,” he says.

Those looking to enjoy a relaxed evening of music with a cold beer in hand may stop in at Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen in Crystal Lake, an upscalecasual pub featuring craft brews, a local organic menu and live entertainment.

The stage in this local gem of a restaurant features jazz, acoustic rock, modern folk music and even karaoke. Regular acts like the Rick and Jim Jazz Duo and acoustic rockers Sean and Karen bring in a mix of newcomers and diehard fans of the music, as well as Duke’s food and drink.

“Live music is meant to bring people together with a common interest,” says Duke’s general manager Zak Dolezal. “We enjoy offering free entertainment to our guests, and we try and appeal to a wide range of people by offering all kinds of entertainment. We try to be the neighborhood joint that anyone can walk into and have a good time.”

He also says he’s thankful for the opportunity to offer a live show to Duke’s already established local clientele.

“Not many places have a stage or location for live music,” he says. “We are lucky to have that so we utilize it. It makes us, and Crystal Lake that much more unique.” mc mchenrycountymagazine.com

Music brought Sean and Karen Slavin together, and they’re now hoping their music does the same for others.

Promoting a new album, the Woodstock couple and duo perform acoustic rock and country regularly on the stage at Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen in Crystal Lake.

“He embodies all the ideals on how people should live,” Sean Slavin said of Lennon.

The two formed a group in 2005 and played gigs off and on for awhile, including children’s shows. But their music was put on the back-burner as the couple focused on children, jobs and other life changes.

“About a year ago, we started coming at it again full-force,” Sean Slavin said.

Sean Slavin grew up a fan of the Beatles, particularly John Lennon, while Karen listened to Jimmy Hendrix.

It was his love of Beatles music, and a push by his mother, that inspired him to learn guitar.

Sean met Karen while she worked as a waitress as a single mom. Engaged to someone else at the time, he and his family were regular customers where Karen worked. The two learned of their shared interest in music and played an open mic together one night.

Since then, the duo has seen much success, writing their own original songs and performing throughout the Chicago suburbs.

They ranked in the top 10 in the 2013 Suburban Chicago’s Got Talent competition.

They eventually lost touch. But years later, after Sean and his first wife had divorced, Sean and Karen met up again.

Sean saw Karen perform at Uncommon Ground in Chicago, and they began playing music together.

They recently selfreleased the album “Moodswings,” available at reverbnation.com/ seanandkarenslavin.

They’ve been told their music is reminiscent of songs from the 1940s, Sean Slavin said.

The album contains country, rock, a “French cafe type of song,” some pop and folk, he said.

“It has so many elements,” he said.

Its influences come from the Beatles when it comes to the melodies, he said, as the songs have to be “hummable.”

“Our stuff is, for whatever reason, really catchy right away, and the lyrics are positive,” he said.

“We don’t sit down and consciously say, ‘Lets write a song like this or like that.’ It’s just we write a song.”

Reflecting both of their influences, the duo has described their music as a cross between Johnny Cash and June Carter and the Beatles. Comparisons also have been made to Brandi Carlile, Ray

“I just thought, ‘Wow, this girl is amazingly entertaining and really talented,’ ” Sean remembered.

Sean was playing in a metal band at the time, but left the band to work with Karen.

The two were married after two months of dating.

They have three children, ages 3, 5 and 17.

Since performing regularly, they’ve had interest from major record labels. But, Sean said, it can be tough to make a living in the music industry.

“I think if it’s meant to be, and you’re good enough and keep at it long enough, stuff happens,” Sean said.

Even if they can’t always perform, Sean said he’d love to be able to work as a songwriter. For now, he said, they intend to keep plugging along, hoping to at least improve people’s moods with their songs or perhaps touch them in some way.

William Street Repertory fills niche at the Raue The principals behind Raue Center for the Arts in Crystal Lake always wanted a theater company associated with their venue, and Williams Street Repertory represents a realization of that desire.

The in-house theater company, founded by Richard Kuranda, Raue’s executive director, was in part an outgrowth of original Raue programming including Page to Stage (dramatic reading) and Get Lit (a monthly series with short stories).

McMillin says, also was especially popular “with an amazing cast and beautiful set.”

Earlier this year, Williams Street Rep snagged John Michael Coppola, who appeared in the Chicago and Las Vegas casts of “Jersey Boys,” to star in its production of the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical, “Company.”

“This coming summer we’re starting to think about doing our first theater festival — an opportunity to challenge local residents to submit what they have written and to give exposure to new, untestd works.”

Its first production, in October 2010, was “I Am the Machine Gunner,” says Alexandra McMillin, marketing and development manager. Michael Vandercook, director of production, brought the show to the 750-seat Raue.

“The reception has been positive, and we’ve seen a lot of growth,” she notes.

Starting out in an uncertain economy may have seemed counterintuitive, but McMillin says it was a decision that paid off.

“The Rocky Horror Show,” based on a 1975 cult film, staged in 2011, was so successful it was remounted a year later. “Steel Magnolias,”

Productions in the current season include “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (wrapping up Nov. 2) and “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play” (Nov. 29Dec. 9), to be followed “She Loves Me” and “Barefoot in the Park.”

Many cast members are drawn from Crystal Lake and McHenry County. Talented performers from Chicago also regularly audition here. “Being near the Metra helps,” McMillin says.

Meanwhile, Crystal Lake brings in its share of audiences, though theater fans also have begun coming from surrounding suburbs, including Cary, Barrington and Elgin. Admission varies from $25-$30 and student discounts are offered.

TownSquare Players take on social awkwardness “The Nerd”, by Larry Shue, is featured this month at the Woodstock Opera House.

The play takes place in the apartment of Willum Cubbert, an aspiring young architect. Willum owes his life to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met, but who saved his life when they were in Vietnam. Willem is delighted when Rick shows up at his apartment unexpectedly. His delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd” with no social skills, little intelligence and even less tact. Rick stays on and on and his continued presence alongside Willum and his friends leads to one uproarious incident after another.

“This coming summer,” says McMillin,“we’re starting to think about doing our first theater festival — an opportunity to challenge local residents to submit what they have written and to give exposure to new, untested works.”

In addition, Williams Street Rep dreams about starting a new improv company as a training ground for would-be future comedians.

As McMillin explains: “It’s something we would like to see develop. Raue currently runs a program called Lucy’s Comedy Café, a small-stage show in which the audience is seated onstage and entertained by comedians in an intimate setting. It’s been a great hit.

ale Schwartz likes to borrow an observation from Walt Disney when explaining the inspiration behind his entrepreneurial endeavor, Pinstripes. “He said that there’s very little adult in a child but there’s a lot of child in a lot of adults,” said Schwartz. “At the end of the day, every adult has a kid inside of them that likes to have fun. At Pinstripes we compliment that with phenomenal food and a great wine list.”

Pinstripes features bowling, bocce and bistro fare.

“Everything we do is sophisticated fun, offering strikingly good food with the novelty of combining bowling and bocce. No one has combined the two in one venue, and that’s what we do,” Schwartz said. It’s aimed at virtually anyone of any age. “It’s a melting pot of the community. That’s part of the beauty of what we do. “ The vision for launching Pinstripes was to enable people to take a trip “back to the future,” said Schwartz. “We intentionally don’t have arcades or video games and we’re not a sports bar. It’s good old-fashioned fun. Once upon a time when we were

cute little kids, we didn’t waste time with video games. That’s what we have here.”

“There’s a terrific fun element: between bowling, bocce, great food, drinks and live entertainment, Pinstripes speaks to the little kid in all of us that loves to have fun,” said Schwartz.

If competition is your calling, Whirlyball may just be for you. This unique game combines lacrosse, hockey and basketball, all played from bumper cars. And yes, it’s as crazy as it sounds.

Players call it the “great equalizer” as it’s active and team-based like most sports, but requires no actual athletic prowess.

Managers say Sam Elias, who opened the original Whirlyball location in 1993, wanted a place where people could have loads of fun during the cold winter months. His answer was 4,000 square feet to bump cars, cross check, slam dunk balls and have a great time.

Tall or short, male or female, gifted athlete or couch potato, Whirlyball court is open to anyone over 12 years old and 4 and a half feet tall.

To the delight of daredevils and adrenaline junkies, Whirlyball has grown to three area locations, and has added laser tag facilities and climbing walls to its offerings.

Other work also includes a new and larger lobby, a new entrance, two party rooms and a 40-foot curved concession stand.

Since last summer, the booming sounds of renovations and additions have been heard going on over at the historical Woodstock Theatre, revealing a few surprises in the process.

The most outstanding piece of the project, set to be unveiled to the public in December with a special ceremony and free viewing of “White Christmas,” is the renovation of what was the original Miller Theater, which opened on Nov. 8, 1927.

Before the Miller Theater was built, the Princess Theater stood in its spot and is said to have been a Vaudeville stage from the time it was built in 1911, according to Mark Mazrimas, marketing manager with Classic Cinemas, which owns the theater.

Additions have included the two new movie theaters, six new movie screens, stadium seating, and upgrades to the latest in digital and audio enhancements, including two 3-D screens, enhanced 4K Digital Projection and Datasat 7.1 Sound.

Over the years, the oldest part of the cinema, what was The Miller Theater, had been “twinned” or divided, into two smaller theaters.

Local craft beer purveyors answer call of creativity

Beer long has been associated with good times: backyard gatherings, relaxing after work, and (of course) sports! But in a sudden wave of grassroots enthusiasm, the market for brew has been cracked by the unassuming world of craft beer.

Curt Ames, owner of Chain O’Lakes Brewing in McHenry knows a thing or two about these craft beers. He opened his microbrewery on the sight of the historic McHenry 16 | NOVEMBER 2013 | MCHENRY COUNTY MAGAZINE

“We bring fresh, crafted beer to our area that patrons can’t find anywhere else. We give them an appreciation of what beer really is because they can have conversations with brewers,” Ames says. “They can have an understanding of how local craft brewers use ingredients to bring them a fresh, crafted beer.”

Craft beer has become popular because people are demanding something with flavor, taste and freshness.

Zak Dolezal, manager and head chef of Duke’s Alehouse & Kitchen in Crystal Lake, says craft beer can be enjoyed by just about anyone, and often is more approachable than wine. While there are breweries popping up everywhere, the good ones are relatively inexpensive and easy to find as opposed to wines that can be very expensive and not necessarily tasty, Dolezal claims.

“Plus you don’t always have to commit to a large bottle.”

Dolezal says he finds mass produced beer to be pretty tasteless, and enjoys introducing people to the flavors and versatility of the beverage in its craft state. He also cooks with it, and pairs it with specific foods for a complete craft beerdining experience.

“Duke’s is always experimenting and trying new

things. Sometimes we are able to follow the rules while other times we find odd pairings that surprise us,” he says. “Then it becomes more complex as you add courses to a menu.

Beers and food then must progress together as well as pair with each individual dish.”

Ames and Dolezal might have found their specialties but they’re not selfish about it.

In fact, craft brewery is at once the artistry of a creative mind and a social medium.

These brewmasters and enthusiasts instill their love into their beers and food and then want to share it with others and discuss the craftsmanship of it. As Dolezal explains, you don’t need to know anything about craft beer to visit because they will gently guide you to a beer that you adore.

“Every member of our staff can direct a novice or experienced beer drinker to find the right beer for them or at least send them in the right direction, Dolezal says. “By encouraging our customers to drink more varieties of beers it helps to educate their taste buds. [They keep] coming back to try something new or go back and try something they didn’t originally like, but now enjoy. That’s what makes beer so much fun and at Duke’s we celebrate that.” mc

From sweet to savory, Algonquin shop fills a hungry niche Oh, the heavenly scent of fresh, popped corn!

Life is a Cabernet, my friend

F

arming grapes in Napa Valley since the 1940s, Charlie Wagner painstakingly helped develop the credibility behind the current “scene” that is Napa Valley Cabernet.

Acquiring and replanting vineyard sites to optimize their potential, Charlie named his Cabernet project “Caymus” after the Rancho Caymus Land Grant of 1836 that destined the Napa Valley for agricultural greatness.

After convincing their son, Chuck, to take up the family business in the early 1970s, Charlie and his wife Lorna Belle turned the corner from being farmers and landowners to creating a label and a unique winery with a “house style” all its own…

Caymus Cabernet | $70 — One of the pioneers and most recognizable labels in the wine world, Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet has been defining California’s winemaking since its first release in 1972. With fruit from both the valley floor and from mountain-side sources in Napa, the “house style” of the Wagner’s Caymus Cabernet comes alive.

This wine is consistently flavorful across all three fronts — the fruit is fresh and deep and vibrant, the minerality is smooth and clean and expressive, and the oak program adds depth and texture without overwhelming the wine. Caymus Cabs are a benchmark of Napa Valley quality.

Conundrum White | $20 — The story goes that 20 years ago, Chuck would sit around the dinner table after a long day’s work in the vineyards and experiment with the wines that were freshly bottled but not yet labeled and released. He loved the body of Chardonnay, but wanted the aromatics offered by lighter varietals like Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier. He would blend the finished wines in his glass at the table until one day — KAAAPOW! He stumbled upon a blend that was both full in body yet fresh in aromatics and flavor. So Conundrum White was born. To this day, this fruity yet full white wine goes with just about everything.

Conundrum Red | $20 — After a few years of trial and error, the red counterpart was developed.

Forward with red and jammy fruit flavors, this lively wine then takes a turn for the serious with rich tannins and a solid backbone. Fortunately, the soft and savory cocoa and vanilla notes from the oak barrel aging are there to cradle the sensation into a smooth and toasty finish. “So you don’t have to put the leaves under a bed or in a closet,” Nye says.

For instance, the Randers dining room table set includes two hidden leaves stored inside the base, and can seat up to 10. The table and chairs can be custom ordered in a variety of wood finishes, is a long time Dania customer favorite.

Fall Family Fun Options abound to fill your free days

Looking for some nearby family fun? Whether it’s a weekend free of soccer practice and music lessons, or a weekday off from school, the area boasts some great activities, for kids and parents alike.

It’s beautiful in autumn at the Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Road in Ingleside. Take in all the fall colors at this unique nature area, spanning Lake and McHenry counties. The Volo Bog offers lots of free outdoor recreation and exploration from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, says Stacy Iwanicki, the bog’s natural resources coordinator Families can first stop at the visitor’s center and pick up guides to explore miles of hiking trails surrounded by wetlands, marsh, wild flowers and grasses. Then picnic, explore nature, look under logs, seek out animal foot prints, birds’ nests and bird watch or walk out to the center of the bog on a half mile “floating” boardwalk, says Iwanicki.

A few special events are planned at the bog, including a dried prairie flower arranging class, for adults and children 11 and older, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. A bird walk is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, followed by a Chipmunk Woods Family Workday at 10:30 a.m. Families will gather to collect seeds, cut brush, make forts out of

the collected brush and explore the Chipmunk Woods.

thought our “smart phones” were supposed to make us smarter? Lately it has occurred to me that using the turn “smart phone” is quite the oxymoron.

Before I got my iPhone, I swore I wouldn’t be “that person” who stared at their phone and incessantly swiped at it with their finger. I knew I wouldn’t answer questions without looking up from my phone and in a robotic, monotone voice as if some outside force had snatched my mind. I never would look at my phone while walking through a busy parking lot.

Last week, I deleted Candy Crush in an effort to regain control of my life.

Lashing Out Eyelash extensions create dramatic trend I By ALLISON HORNE

I

Every mascara company boasts that it will make your lashes longer, stronger, thicker and more appealing, but there’s only one new trend that can do all of that in one fell swoop—eyelash extensions. And while it’s possible to purchase eyelash extensions and fillers at your local convenience stores that can be applied at home, the result won’t likely be the same as the quality you get in a salon. Generally, store-bought lashes are applied in strips, which differs from the individual application process and professional quality that salons offer.

McHenry County Magazine talked with Josann Rahning, regional manager of beauty retail for Mario Tricoci about the latest in this beauty trend.

At all Mario Tricoci locations stylists use Xtreme lashes for their extensions, which are synthetic and curved to match the arch of natural eyelashes.

Although there might be hesitation about someone working with products in such close proximity to your eyes, Rahning says the process is safe and the lashes are applied only by a certified lash stylist.

“Xtreme Lashes only sells the professional products to individuals that have successfully completed the training program,” Rahning says. “The application is pain-free and will not harm your eyelids or natural lashes.”

Generally while the lashes are being applied, the client will be reclined in a chair with eyes closed throughout the process, which can take from 90-180 minutes. Each individual artificial eyelash is applied directly to a natural lash, emphasizing and adding to what was already in place.

Rahning says the synthetic lashes are designed to fall off naturally after two to four weeks as the natural lashes shed. Most salons offer re-lashing, which takes considerably less time, but has to be maintained and redone every two to three weeks. In many cases, salons offer packages that include your first application as well as discounted rates for your re-applied lashes.

It doesn’t matter if you have thin or short eyelashes, because Xtreme lashes are designed to fill in and accentuate what you already have, she adds. Lash extensions are designed to give your eyes a little bit of extra flare, whether adding color, additional length, or even longer lashes in the corners.

“Each lash application is personalized to your eye shape, wants and needs,” Rahning says. “There are over 600 varieties, including lengths, thickness, curves and colors.”

With so many options to choose from, Rahning says that if you’re interested in getting a new look for the fall, full lashes are currently in style.

The thought of going gray can be scary for many reasons, including the difficult transition to letting your natural color emerge.

Some women wonder if they’ll still look attractive and feel sexy with gray hair. Plus, there seems to be an almost societal push for women going gray to dye their hair.

A 2010 study in Aging and Society found that while people admire gray hair on others - have you seen Helen Mirren, Emmylou Harris or Jamie Lee Curtis lately? - we’re often averse to trying out the look ourselves. A poll at prevention.com found that 71 percent of respondents said women with gray hair can be sexy, while 78 percent say the same for men.

Going gray is an art that reflects a woman’s confidence whether she’s in her 30s, 40s or 50s, said style expert Rita Hazan of the eponymous New York City salon. Women can absolutely look fabulous with gray hair, but they may have to work a bit for it, Hazan said.

“Some women look stunning and chic with gray hair, but oftentimes, gray hair needs a boost of shine,” she added.

Why do we gray?

As we age, hair starts turning gray as the hair follicles produce less color, and hair loses its pigment, Hazan said: “The lack of pigment increases the tendency to absorb chemicals and trace minerals that are often found in water,” leading to dull hair.

Genetics and environmental factors can play a role in when your hair starts to go gray.

To get back your hair’s shiny gloss, some women may want to use a color-corrective product that will also eliminate yellow from gray hair, Hazan said.

“To keep the shine, condition hair often,” Hazan said.

“I recommend washing hair with a formula geared for gray once a week to counteract yellowing caused by the environment (sun, pollutants, hard water). But beware because many of these products contain a blue tint that can cause a purplish cast. Avoid products with dyes, such as colored stylers, which can tarnish gray hair.”

No matter what color hair is, it should be protected with a hat from the sun, she added.

“Environmental damage is never good, so we have to do whatever we can to protect hair and skin.”

Dealing with feedback The decision to go gray will elicit reaction from friends, family and co-workers who may comment on the change, which can take months from start to finish.

“It is likely grays will start showing up slowly for most people,” Hazan said. To smooth the transition, a professional stylist can artfully place lowlights as the gray grows in. Or, you can wait it out, trimming off the old color until all that’s left is pure silver.

Venarella Hinkle is a 28-year resident of Marengo and is currently starting a watercolor pet portrait business in her home based studio.

Hinkle has studied under Anita Gordon, also a local watercolorist, and has been working hard exploring the world of portraiture of dogs, cats and other furry friends.

Her first and biggest inspiration was a rescued pup from American Brittany Rescue named Buddy Boy. The piece, titled “Don’t Move” and pictured below, is a portrait of the dog looking at Hinkle wide-eyed, not wanting her to disturb the squirrel he was about to chase in their small town backyard.
