’ve got to warn you.

In September, we focus our McHenry County Magazine on fashion, and accordingly, I’ve recently visited many women’s boutiques and clothing stores to oversee photo shoots for our stories.

And when all of the camera lights had flashed and all of the models had gone … I had to go on a little shopping trip of my own.

After you look through this issue, you may feel compelled to do the same.

Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Even if you don’t think you’re all that caught up on the latest trends, I bet you notice the fashion around you more than you give yourself credit for. You like the outfits some of the girls at the office wear to work, and you make mental notes to look for a similar blouse the next time you’re out shopping. Conversely, you don’t like some of the ties the men choose to don, and you vow never to buy your husband that color shirt again.

Everyone has an eye for fashion of some kind.

This issue is dedicated to helping you find what looks good on you — just in time for fall.

In these pages, we give you a visual representation of just a sampling of what you can find at some of the stores at the Algonquin Commons (page 32). Hopefully, our photo spread sparks your imagination and helps you find outfits you feel good in.

Ah, it’s a lovely image, except for one gaping hole in the picture — your grungy fireplace, or lack thereof.

When the air turns from bracingly crisp to downright chilly, a fireplace can be the heart of the home keeping you warm and peaceful with every crackle and pop.

Now is the time to finally build the fireplace of your dreams — or correct that cavity in the family room.

Like shopping for a new car or a bridal gown, many people know their fantasy fireplace when they see it, but they also realize what they can afford.

A fireplace specialist can help narrow down a family’s options, which include wood, gas, direct vent, vent-free and inserts.

Even though a gas fireplace has a host of advantages — there’s no need to cut, buy and store logs; it’s easier to start and clean up;

and a gas fireplace can be installed practically anywhere in a house — Hammerl says most people in McHenry County opt for a woodburning fireplace.

“People are into the smell of the wood and ambience of a fire,” the 25-year fireplace veteran says. “We probably do between 50 to 75 fireplaces a year, and there’s a trend from a more formal to a rustic, relaxed environment, which is what a woodburning fireplace is all about.”

Latest trends

What’s really hot in the fireplace universe?

“A 36-inch opening with lots of mantle made out of marble for pictures and heirlooms,” Hammerl says emphatically. “Plus, space for that big TV, so they can sit on the couch and watch the TV AND the flames dance over the wood.”

Mark Bush has seen his share of fireplace trends and technology since his dad, Wayne Bush, brought him into a Bush Masonry job when he was 13 back in the 1970s.

The days of Mom’s art class landscape crowning the fireplace are long over.

“Ninety percent of fireplaces are still in the family room, and the biggest trend right now is to have a TV installed above the fireplace mantle instead of a picture,” Mark Bush says.

“Units that have small fans and actually pump heat into the room are also stylish, and most fireplaces have log lighters to make starting the fire easy. They use natural gas, a key and a match. Once the firewood has caught, you shut

off the gas.”

What are luxury fireplaces that are on homeowners' dream lists?

Bush says that limestone surrounds are not in demand.

“Homeowners dream of solid or all masonry fireplaces with arches and stone, a real fireplace with a brick chimney and ambiance — something that creates the awe factor when you walk into a room,” he says.

However, the construction company owner offers a warning for homeowners who may think they’re getting the real deal.

“Unfortunately, the most common fireplaces are pre-fabricated metal units made in a factory,” Bush says. “They are engineered to burn wood and have chimney flues that are metal and can have exterior surfaces constructed with wood and covered with siding.

“Builders discovered about 15 years ago during the housing boom that they could save a lot of money installing these types and still charge the same as if they were installing a real fireplace,” he continues. “These fireplaces do not require a foundation, and that is one of the most expensive parts of a real fireplace. Once the unit is installed, lightweight stone that is manufactured to look very real is then usually installed over drywall or a formal type mantel and tile surround are used to give the finishing touches.”

Proving that a fireplace is the heartbeat of the home, Hammerl, who has built hundreds of units over decades, has a vision of his ideal fireplace.

“The ultimate fireplace has a large, raised hearth that you can sit on and gaze at the fire, raised up about 12 inches with a big firebox and mantle and a 40- or 50-inch flatscreen TV above it,” he says.

Judging by the décor, you might not guess this place is a pancake house.

If anything, you might think you’re in an upscale pub.

That’s because this family restaurant — Richard Walker’s Pancake House in Crystal Lake — seems to go the extra mile in everything they do, and it is much appreciated.

Here are some of the titles off the menu: • Totally Awesome Omelettes • Gourmet Griddle Cakes • Wonderful Waffles And they mean what they say. They even have a burger called “The Chubby Burger — its name says it all.”

The good news is that all these titles are true. The omelettes are huge and fluffy. Any of their homemade batters used for the pancakes, hot cakes, flap jacks, waffles and crepes are delicious.

And that's only the main dishes. The extra care I was talking about is sometimes hidden in the details.

For instance, I hate when I go into a breakfast restaurant and have to open 40 butter packets to butter my pancakes or toast. At Richard Walker’s, they whip their own butter and bring it to the table scooped into balls on butter plates perfectly salted and plentiful.

It’s easy to make me happy.

On my last visit, I had a special called the Chorizo Skillet. In one word, it was awesome. Ground chorizo tossed with eggs and a hint of jalapeño in a skillet topped with hash browns and melted cheese — I mean really, what’s not to like? I had a side of the thickly-sliced bacon

with it, too — now I’m really happy.

Which brings me to my next point.

They have a bar.

For that special Sunday breakfast after church, I love having a Bloody Mary with my brunch. My wife likes Mimosas; Richard Walker’s has those also.

General Manager Ray Ovalle keeps a close eye on you once he has greeted you at the door and shown you to your table. After 18 years with the company, he seems to be the best balance of personable front man and dedicated operator. He is constantly roaming the dining room with a warm smile making sure everything is perfect.

His staff is equally well-trained and attentive.

One last note — save some room for dessert and order the bacon waffle topped with Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream for the table. It’s outrageous!

Happy with gluten-free beverages

G

luten is a protein that is found in many foods that we eat on a regular basis. Foods made with barley, wheat, rye, and triticale are usually heavy

with gluten.

The problem we face as consumers of adult beverages is that most ingredients that contain high levels of gluten are staple ingredients in what we drink.

The good news is that brewers and distillers are taking notice to consumers who suffer from gluten allergies. Drinks like ciders and some hard liquor have always been gluten-free, whereas beer has not been. Brewers like Bard’s, Lakefront and Anheuser Busch really started the gluten-free beer market. In fact, Anheuser Busch’s Red Bridge is probably the most recognized gluten-free beer on the market.

It’s brewed with sorghum — a cereal grass that is used to make porridge — instead of barley and wheat like traditional beer.

Vocalist John Michael Coppola will serenade an audience with sweet 1940s classics beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Raue Center for the Arts, 26 N. Williams St. After gaining success as a cast member in the hit musical “Jersey Boys,” Coppola has branched out on his own, performing his solo show “A Jersey Voice” across the country.

From 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, the Crystal Lake Public Library, 126 Paddock St., will host its Teen Anime Club, complete with delicious snacks like traditional Japanese pocky, to fuel conversations revolving around the colorful animation.

“Usually we view an episode of a couple of different anime and then vote on which one we should watch episode two of,” says Bonnie Jonelis, club creator and young adult librarian. “The teens enjoy getting together and talking with their friends.”

And while you may never have the opportunity to own a lavish estate like some English royal families, you can learn how it fell into their hands during an educational course set for Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Algonquin Public Library. “The real Downton Abbey” class will run from 7 to 8 p.m. and cover the history revolving around landscape designers, land inheritance laws and everything inbetween, shedding a new light on the term “real estate.” The course is free; registration will begin Saturday, Sept.

he sport of shooting has a new place in McHenry County to call home, and its name couldn’t be more appropriate for the type of facility many feel the county has been lacking.

On Target, a shooting range and tactical training center located in Crystal Lake, offers sportsmen and women a place to learn about, train with, shoot and purchase firearms.

For many, the new facility really is “on target.” The range opened in May, but by the end of July, On Target already had developed a large membership base.

However, one does not have to be a member to enjoy all of On Target’s facilities and services, says Bo Strom, CEO. And there are plenty of facilities and services to enjoy, says Tom Dorsch, director of operations.

“Our ranges are supported by one of the most state-of-the-art ventilation systems on the market where our members and customers can practice marksmanship in a clean environment,” Dorsch says. “On Target also offers a courteous sales staff, reasonable prices and a comprehensive array of exciting firearm classes.”

The gun range at On Target is actually two ranges — one for pistols, and a second for rifles, which is a special feature at the facility.

“There is no where else to rent or shoot a rifle in the comfort of an indoor range,” says Judy Claxton, business development manager for On Target.

The 12-lane rifle range is 50 yards long and can handle any caliber firearm, and the 12-lane pistol range is 25 yards.

Shooters are well-protected by either ballistic glass or concrete, and a vigilant Range Safety Officer, or RSO, patrols the ranges in a red vest at all times ensuring the safety of On Target’s customers, Dorsch says, noting that every staff member at On Target has completed a day-long NRA range safety course.

One nice feature is that customers have the option of renting one of 30 popular handguns or 10 long guns — including a WASR AK-47, Kriss Vector, Saiga Shotgun or a Smith and Wesson M&P 15 with three different optic styles — to try out at the range, says Strom. And a shooter can trade out firearms during a session to get a feel for different types of calibers. Eye and ear protection also are available to rent.

Again, safety comes first, and only those 18 and older who have a FOID card can rent rifles and use them at the range, while only those 21 and older with a FOID card can rent and use a pistol. Those younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to use the range.

“However, if a couple is trying to get his or her spouse interested in the sport of shooting, as long as one spouse has a FOID card, the other can use the range with his or her partner,” Dorsch says.

The pro shop does buy used guns and has an appraiser on staff, Claxton says. It also offers a full range of gunsmithing services, which customers can seek for gun repair or personalizing their firearms with special features.

And, of course, customers can purchase firearms at On Target from a selection of popular rifles and pistols at competitive prices.

rOMAntiC? Algonquin retiree finds ‘romance’ as new career

as Barbara weitz knows, life is a journey that leads to unexpected opportunities, even during retirement.

While Weitz was working as an information technology specialist at Sears Holdings Corp. several years ago, she saw Brenda Novak, a New York Times best-selling author, signing copies of a romance novel. She had no interest in reading a romance, but took a copy because it was free.

After reading it, she was determined to write her own romance. Inspired by a dream, she began writing her first manuscript, which featured a policewoman who unraveled a troubled past after finding an abused German shepherd.

“It didn’t turn out like the dream. But it opened this Pandora’s box, and all of this flowed out of me,” the 68-year-old Algonquin resident says. “It taught me that I could finish a book from beginning to end.”

In the last six years, Weitz has completed six books, two of which have been published by The Wild Rose Press. Although her specialty is romance writing, she likes to tie in mystery.

“Teed Up for Love,” published last year, is about a rural beauty who meets her match, a London bachelor. Miranda, the main character, moves to West Dundee after accepting a marketing job in Chicago for an English golf club company. She is just learning the ropes

“I picked West Dundee because it’s just a lovely little river town,” Weitz says.

She also chose South Barrington for other scenes because it exemplifies the high-class area that she needed for the home of Miranda’s friend.

Her new release, “Cutter Mountain Rendezvous,” is about rebuilding life after wrong turns and bad decisions. Kate is a divorced mom and former songwriter who crosses paths with Colton, an injured Chicago ballplayer. Both characters are seeking new direction and meet in the Appalachian Mountains near the inn that Kate is renovating.

The mystery begins when Colton encounters a stranger lurking on the inn property.

Weitz has dabbled in many creative outlets.

While raising three sons, she wrote bedtime stories for them. She also has written poems and composed music for the guitar. But she felt driven to do more until she started writing novels.

“I’d never considered romance writing,” Weitz says. “But once I gave it a shot, I became addicted to the creating process.”

She began emailing Novak, who writes romances and thrillers, to learn about the publishing business. As suggested by Novak, she joined Chicago-North Romance Writers of America, a professional network of published and unpublished writers.

RWA has helped her get a better understanding of the publishing process, such as how to present her work in a query and how McHenryCountyMagazine.com

to write better dialogue. She also has established contacts with publishers through the group.

She describes herself as a “panster” — a writer who starts with a few ideas and little structure.

“I typically write 50 pages before I say, ‘OK, I like this story,’” Weitz says. “And then I’ll draw a rough outline to focus and guide myself.”

To complete a manuscript, she generally needs eight months — three months to prepare a rough draft and several months to polish the story, which is edited eight to 10 times.

In her office, a train of tables serves as a long desk to provide ample space for a computer and pages in progress. A small knight on a horse sits on the desk as a symbol of Miranda’s recurring dream in “Teed Up for Love.”

Weitz uses her experiences from a wide variety of jobs to create stories. Before working as an IT specialist for Sears, she was an executive secretary for a balloon company and took on jobs with odd hours to be a stay-at-home mom.

She has waitressed, sold oil paintings, worked in an animal hospital and helped in an emergency room as a secretary.

“It’s the influences in your life that you draw on when a character develops in your mind,” Weitz says.

For instance, like Kate in “Cutter Mountain Rendezvous,” Weitz has written country music.

She includes lines from one of her songs in the book.

Currently, she is working on finding a publisher for her story about the policewoman — the first of a three-part series — and she is completing two other books.

“I write because I cannot stop myself from writing,” Weitz says. “Once I open that door, I have so many ideas and characters begging to come out onto the page.” mc

Along with those signs of autumn will come the colors and styles of the hottest fall fashion.

Just because the weather is getting cooler doesn’t mean women can’t still be fashionable and chic in a sweater and ankle boots. For fall, there are limitless looks that can keep ladies warm and stylish at the same time.

One local women’s clothing and accessories boutique that has lots of experience getting women stylish for the autumn season is The Clothes Galley, located in downtown Crystal Lake.

Owner Sherree Rothstein bought an existing business in Crystal Lake and renovated it, but kept the same name because the store had been a fixture in the downtown area for a long time.

A pop of color

Rothstein expects color to be in this autumn, especially bright and strong colors like cobalt, red, purple and green, plus warm colors like brown and honey.

Colored coats, tights, skinny jeans and corduroy will be a part of the fall trend as well, and prints and animal prints will make a big fashion statement.

As expected, sweaters will be strong this season.

ideal for the cooler weather.

Rothstein says jeans will not be as essential this fall, as leggings, techno pants and twill pants are becoming quite popular. Techno pants are one of the latest fashions and are a key component for a fall wardrobe, she says.

For example, to plan an outfit for a fun evening that’s still fall appropriate, Rothstein suggests wearing a pair of black techno pants and a top with some sparkle or sleeves with beading.

Or, the “perfect” fall outfit might consist of a pair of brown techno pants that give women a long, straight look, matched with a curry-colored tunic sweater, she says.

Chunky jewelry would finish the look.

As for the perfect shoe, Rothstein has a few tips.

“Tall boots are really happening right now,” she says.

“And the UGG-boots-with-jeans look and riding boots with leggings are really popular, too.”

Rothstein expects leather dresses to be popular this fall, and she’s ordered plenty of them for her shop. Leather dresses, especially halter necks, tube necklines, laced, sweetheart necklines and more have been all the rage among fashion-conscious women.

The right pieces

For those shopping on a budget for the latest trends, experts suggest purchasing one or two key pieces that can work with multiple outfits, or investing in a few fashionable accessories such as over-the-knee boots and colorful scarves, which can help to update an existing fall wardrobe.

Other must-haves for the autumn season include highwaisted skirts in solid colors and a versatile black or gray dress that can be worn over longsleeved tops. Embellished flats also will be a part of the fall fashion trend.

Although women might not always feel fabulous and chic during the cooler months when they have to cover up to keep warm, great accessories can dress up any outfit.

“Accessories are the key to finishing every woman’s look,” Rothstein says, noting that long necklaces and chunkier bracelets and bangles are great finishing touches.

However, it can be difficult for jewelry to stand out when an outfit is composed of several layers. One way to combat that problem is to make a fashion statement with a handbag.

Handbags for autumn could be furry, flat or just plain fun. A large embellished handbag will go with any outfit and jacket combination, and it’s a great way to add style.

Rothstein says fall fashion is very exciting.

“We dress so lightly in the summer,” she says. “But in the fall, fabrics are so much more [rich].” mc

ise about quality, style, spending and community, women who shop at consignment boutiques benefit their wardrobes, neighbors and budgets.

That’s how three area store owners feel about what their women’s apparel shops provide both on and off the racks.

Sandy Conrad, coowner of

Double Exposure Elite Resale in Barrington, says consignment shoppers can find styles that parallel the hottest trends in department and specialty stores, but at a much lower cost. The way it works, consigners sell their pristine-condition items to a store that resells the items, and then the consigner receives a portion of the sale.

“Resale typically follows the trends that are selling in the stores,” Conrad says. “So, we are trying to mirror the fine stores, like Nordstrom.”

One of the benefits of shopping consignment or retail is the reduced prices of designer brands. Conrad says popular brands are already marketed in department stores, but with consignment, shoppers aren’t paying for the advertising dollars that promote those brands.

Coach, Chanel, Prada and Dior are among the labels available at Double Exposure, and premium designer denim is a good seller at the shop, so Conrad and her sister-in-law and co-owner Paula Conrad prioritize their selection of it.

“Really, we try and mimic the trends that the higher-end department stores are promoting,” Sandy Conrad says.

Sometimes, it’s the classics that are the most coveted. For example, St. John’s Bay knits are popular with Double Exposure shoppers,

Conrad says. Classic pieces that aren’t affected by seasonal trends are just good picks.

“Those items can be worn through many seasons,” she says, adding that animal print patterns are another safe bet.

FaLL FasHIoN TRENDS

While Conrad reflects on some of the staples in fashion, Potpourri Resale owner Laurie Nelson says she is happy about a recent shift in fashion. Dresses have made a comeback, she says.

“I think the next generation is just becoming more mature. They’re being more feminine, more mature about how they’re dressing,” says Nelson, who has more than two decades of experience owning Potpourri Resale in McHenry. “We don’t have that ‘crud’ look anymore. We don’t have the darkness [in trends].”

From her perspective, weather influences fashion.

“I firmly believe the weather has a lot to do with the way people dress,” Nelson says. “The sunnier it is, the bolder colors people wear.”

This year’s absence of gloomy, rainy weather has perked up the style scene, she says.

“Now we have the cheerier colors,” she says, noting trends for fall are “a little bit of McHenryCountyMagazine.com

upcoming season.

And handbags are generally not as oversized as last year’s trends, she says.

“Jewelry this year is something that pops,” Nelson adds. “Shoppers want tons of bangles.”

Animal pattern prints and fluorescent colors are also top picks at Plato’s Closet in Algonquin. While a little different than a consignment boutique, the store offers gently used clothing at deep discounts, focusing on current trends, says Larry Keen. His wife Barb Keen owns the store, and managers Katie Hazlik and Kristine Gilbo handle the fashion buying.

“Handbags are less slouchy this year,” Hazlik says. “And floral and tribal prints are popular.”

Adult & Child Therapy Services (ACTS) is a place for all ages. The therapists at ACTS take pride in serving the entire life span of McHenry County’s residents under one roof. From a toddler receiving treatment for toe walking, to a senior citizen being seen for a Fall Risk Screening, the very essence of what ACTS does is reflected in the clients it serves.

2) History and starting of agency?

In 1949, a group of dedicated, communityminded individuals set out to provide services to the physically and developmentally delayed residents of McHenry County. The founding fathers, Dr. Joseph Tambone and Dr. Bernard Neuchiller, were local practicing physicians who saw a need and created a clinic through Easter Seals. Today, that clinic is known as Adult & Child Therapy Services. We are still committed to the same mission that was established 63 years ago–to provide the highest level of services to the physically challenged and developmentally delayed of every age, bringing hope and creating confidence to realize individual maximum levels of independence.

3) What types of programs do you provide?

Located at 708 Washington St. in Woodstock, our trained staff and certified therapists provide occupational, physical and speech therapy. Adult & Child Therapy Services also has free programs such as Birth through Three Developmental Screenings and Fall Risk Screenings. ACTS is Medicaid and Medicare certified and the provider of choice for most insurance companies. We also provide services to McHenry County’s underinsured and uninsured residents.

4) Why are your services so valuable?

Through the services that ACTS provides, people of the community are taught skills to help them function at their best. Physical therapists help a client walk after suffering a stroke. 5) Can you share a success story of ACTS?

In September 2008, Barb Dye was a bright and lively substitute teacher standing in front of a Woodstock class when she suffered a severe brain aneurism. She was flown to the hospital and straight into surgery where she was given a 3 percent chance of living. After 31 days in a coma, Barb awoke a changed woman.

After months of recovery, Barb began physical therapy at Adult & Child Therapy Services.

Sessions began by alleviating some of Barb’s body weight, with the help of the unweighing system, to

improve her mobility and make walking easier.

Today, Barb walks short distances using her own two feet with simple assistance. Through her work with ACTS, Barb has regained some use of her left arm and is able to grip the reins for her favorite hobby, horseback riding. While the severity of Barb’s aneurism has prohibited her from living the retirement she had planned, it has not stopped her from living a full and happy one.

Topping the list of distractions from homework these days is cell phones.

The phones, in all their latest forms, are among several things parents might need to monitor when trying to encourage good study habits at home, say area educators.

“Maybe they need to turn them off when they're doing homework,” says Carol Smith, director of community services for Woodstock School District 200. “Students think they can text and study at the same time. Very often, they’re not paying attention to their studies.”

Along with limiting the gadgets and other distractions such as video games and television, it’s important for students to have a study space.

A quiet area intended specifically as a place to study is ideal, educators say.

And it shouldn’t be in front of the television or a computer.

“They know when they're at that desk, that’s where they're supposed to be doing their schoolwork,” Smith says.

It’s up to parents to figure out where and exactly when their children should work on homework by understanding what works best for them, says Lauri Tobias, superintendent of Harvard Community Unit School District 50.

“Every child is different as to what helps or hinders them during homework,” she says. “Some work better with music playing, others need peace and quiet.”

Busy work

Even though the academic value of some homework might not be immediately apparent, it serves a purpose in the overall lesson plan, Tobias says.

“Homework is often designed to help students gain familiarity and comfort with the concepts and lessons of the school day,” she says.

At higher levels, teachers sometimes use homework to address topics not addressed in class because of time constraints, she says, so it’s not “busy work.”

Communication with both the child and the child's teacher is important, Tobias says, and parents should talk over with teachers how they prefer parents get involved in homework.

they understand the assignments and let the teacher know if they have concerns with how much or how little homework their child is getting, she says.

“First and foremost, parents can help by making clear to their children the importance of doing homework and completing it on time,” she says.

“Homework is usually best done earlier in the evening, before the child becomes tired.”

If students are anxious or frustrated, parents should provide guidance to help them work through it, but they should not do the homework for their child, Tobias says.

Give ‘em a break

Though television and video games can be distractions, they also can teach important skills when used correctly, Tobias says.

“They are not inherently good or bad for students,” she says. “The key is how television, video games and computer games are used and how frequently they are used.”

At District 200, it’s estimated that students will have 10 minutes of homework for each grade level they're in, though they may have more or less any given night, Smith says.

She suggests allowing students to have a healthy snack and a bit of a break after school.

“It’s a good idea to give them a little bit of down time,” she says.

The most important thing parents can do is encourage and ready their children to learn, she says.

“When we talk about involved parents, that can take on a lot of different meanings,” Smith says.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean parents have to be visiting the school, though we love that. Being an involved parent means you send your child to school ready for the day, with the materials and support they need, a healthy lunch ... all those things help the teachers do their jobs as well.”

Practicing Good Study Habits • Have a set time to settle down. By having the same start-time for homework every day, you avoid having daily battles about when it's time to hit the books.

• Take a breather. Just like schools have recess, children need to have mini-breaks when they're working hard to complete homework or projects or studying for tests. Come up with some five-minute break ideas that will appeal to your child — doing some stretches, playing with a pet, grabbing a glass of juice, etc.

• Create a study space. Every family needs the basic “ingredients” for studying and doing homework: a workspace with good lighting, the tools needed to complete the work, basic reference materials and a library card for special projects.

• Turn off the distractions. Your child’s study area should be distraction-free during study/homework time. That means the TV and computer games should be off or out of view (and earshot).

• Teach them responsibility. Children have to absolutely know that it is their responsibility to know what work has to be done and when it's due.

• Make day-by-day lists. Keep track of what needs to be done by creating a daily check-off list and posting it in a prominent place.

Effective and Appropriate Help With Homework

Guidance is great. Help your children understand assignments by talking with them about concepts. Let’s say your child is having trouble with basic division. Dump out a stack of pennies and paper clips, count the total and, together, divide them into groups of five, six or seven. If your child has writer’s block, instead of suggesting phrases to use, brainstorm together about ideas of things he or she could write about, and ask your child to list some of the things he or she could say. Help your children to learn how to think through the process.

Be encouraging. It can be

frustrating to try to master new concepts and complete school projects. Give your children encouragement and understanding as they work things through.

Expand their brains. One great

way parents can help their children with school projects is by asking them to go beyond their original ideas. If your son, for example, wants to do a shoebox diorama about dinosaurs, tell him that his original idea is good, but ask what other ways he could try. Don’t give him ideas, but help him use his own creativity. Ask him to think out a number of different ways he could approach the assignment. Let him follow his own path.

Know when to call for help. If your child is consistently having trouble with a specific concept, even after you’ve helped explain it to him or her, it’s time to let the teacher know. Chances are yours isn’t the only child in the class who's confused.

• Get in the “flash card” habit. From the earliest grades, students can benefit hugely from using homemade flash cards to learn facts, spelling and math.

• Keep a watchful eye. Although you don’t need to sit with your children while they do their homework, it helps to be nearby. They see that you’re keeping track of whether they’re daydreaming or working, they know you'll be available if they are stumped and they learn that you care about what they're doing. mc

How to Buy a Car

Since

the 1950s, when Dodge rolled out its La Femme sedan with rosebud upholstery and an option package that included a matching purse, rain bonnet and lipstick case, the auto industry has recognized the importance of female buyers … even if it doesn’t always understand them.

According to research by Road and Travel Magazine, women purchase 65 percent of all new cars, 53 percent of all used cars and influence 95 percent of all auto purchases.

Yet, the buying process still can be intimidating.

Road and Travel’s research reveals that more than a third of women car buyers would rather deal with a woman in the auto showroom, but the percentage of woman automotive sales people, for new and used vehicles, is less than 5 percent.

Many baby-boomer women can tell stories of being condescended to, or simply ignored, when car shopping with their husband or father, even if they were the primary driver.

However, the process is changing, and the industry is responding, largely due to the Internet.

“There’s been a change in the industry’s mind-set about women buyers, and the industry is more conscious of meeting their needs,” says Cassandra Thibodeau, Internet sales advisor with Anderson Motors of Crystal Lake.

Online research has become a crucial part of car shopping, and it should begin at least a month before the purchase.

“Most people come in with all the information printed out,” Thibodeau says.

The search for a new or used car often begins at manufacturers’ websites to search out specific models and features. It then moves on to the Kelly Blue Book website, www.kbb.com, for car value and pricing information and Edmunds, www.edmunds. com, for reviews, pricing and local inventory.

Once a customer settles on the model and features she wants, visiting local dealers’ sites can help her

find the best price.

“What’s great about the Internet is that it’s like going onto a sales lot without actually setting foot there, so it takes away a lot of the stress,” Thibodeau says.

Though buyers are usually price-focused, customer service is equally important. Once again, the Internet can help. Local review sites such as Yelp.com offer customer ratings and reviews.

Thibodeau says that customers often will have contact with her, either by phone or online, prior to or sometimes instead of visiting a showroom.

“Women prefer email to talking on the phone because it takes some of the pressure off,” she says.

“When they’re considering an offer, it lets them think it through on their own time.”

MOney talk

When it comes to financing, Jody DeVere, CEO and founder of www.askpatty.com — an automotive information website aimed at women — says many women prefer nohaggle pricing.

They also need to be aware of their credit score before visiting a showroom.

“If you know your credit rating qualifies you for 4.5 percent financing and someone offers you 8 percent, then you’ll know not to take it,” she says.

Thibodeau agrees.

“The manufacturers put a lot of information

about financing specials on their websites, but you must know your credit score to know if you qualify,” she says.

Also, be upfront about bankruptcy.

“If you’ve had a bankruptcy, we aren’t faulting you, but we do ask for extra information,” Thibodeau says.

“It saves time and makes things easier if you can bring everything with you.”

DeVere grew up immersed in Southern California’s car culture, and learned automotive know-how from her dad.

“I was the girl holding the flashlight when he was under the hood,” she says. “I knew how to take care of my car before women did that. My dad did me a big favor.”

But as a consultant to the automotive industry, DeVere saw “a big black hole” between women and how the industry responded to them.

“Women felt lots of anxiety in approaching dealerships and repair shops, primarily because of a lack of knowledge,” she says, noting that black hole led her to launch www.askpatty.com.

Not only does her site provide information on a variety of car topics, it also certifies auto businesses as female friendly.

KnOWLedGe is power

Knowledge is important when buying a used car.

In addition to Kelly Blue Book, DeVere recommends using www.edmunds.com and www.lemonfree.com to search for vehicles and comparison shop. She also recommends using a car’s vehicle information number, or VIN, to research accidents and service reports through sites such as www.autocheck.com and www.carfax.com.

“It’s a matter of knowing how a vehicle was maintained,” says Rick Modrich, manager of Ron’s Service in Crystal Lake. “You want to make sure everything is up to date.”

Have the car inspected by a “Master Technician” certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence before making a purchase.

“If the seller won’t let you have the car inspected, don’t buy it,” DeVere says.

Understanding the difference between minor and major repairs can help buyers make better choices as well.

“Many cars have been in accidents with minor collisions, but what you want to watch out for is major damage to the frame,” Modrich says.

While some repairs are reasonable, like brakes or tires, “you want to avoid system failures such as engines or transmissions,” DeVere says.

Also beware of the service engine light.

“I wouldn’t buy a car with a service engine light on without having it checked out first to know how serious the problem is,” Modrich says.

o you long to wear a little strapless dress with the confidence your arms aren’t flapping in the wind as you wave to a friend?

Do you envy those sporting toned arms with that cool, V-shaped muscle near the top of their shoulder?

Well, you are not alone. And there is hope.

It is possible to achieve pretty, toned arms with a few simple regular exercises, says Steve Schwab, personal trainer and owner of CrossFit North Wall in Crystal Lake.

The main concern he hears from women trying to achieve shapely arms is the muscle on the back of the upper arm.

“Usually it’s the flabby triceps [that women] are trying to fix,” Schwab says. “They want to have the really defined arms like the runners have or the people that tend to work out a lot.”

The ideal look women desire is “really good definition on shoulders and upper arms,” he says.

Schwab does not recommend using machines to tone up arms. Instead, he opts for a few good body weight and floor exercises that work out multiple, complimentary muscles at the same time. The following are some of those exdrcises:

pusH-Ups

Kneel on the floor and place your hands on the floor, keeping your arms close to your body equal distance away so that each hand is just under each armpit, with your fingers pointing straight forward away from your body. Then, as far as it is comfortable, move your hands slightly away from your body. Push yourself up and down, emphasizing a full range of motion — all the way down

until you feel your chest, tummy or thighs touch the ground, and all the way up until your arms are straight or fully extended. Keep your back straight.

For a little more difficulty while doing a push-up, place one hand on a stack of books, a step or a ball — anything that is stable and about two inches or more off the ground, Schwab says. Be sure to work out each arm, taking turns being elevated. As you get stronger, the object can get taller and you can move it further away from your body to increase the difficulty and intensity of the motion, he says. The goal is to get up to 10 to 12 reps a set, and three to four sets a workout.

puLL-Ups

These are great for the back, shoulders and biceps, Schwab says. Place your hands on a strong bar above your head, with your palms facing away from you. Pull yourself up until your chin reaches over the bar, then slowly lower your body back down. This exercise uses more back muscles and the back of your shoulders.

CHin-Ups

These are great for the biceps and back. Hanging from a strong bar with your palms facing toward you, pull yourself up until your chin reaches over the bar, then slowly lower your body back down. This exercise uses your biceps more.

Support your body between two stable chairs by standing between the chairs and placing a hand on each chair. With your feet dangling off the ground, or with your heels slightly touching the ground in front of you, slowly lower yourself as close to the ground as you can, and then slowly lift yourself back up to your starting position.

pusH-Up On An Incline

This is another good arm exercise that can be done anywhere by leaning on a table or countertop, Schwab says. Follow the same motions as a regular push-up. Keep your body straight, pushing against the table/countertop. This exercise will focus more on the arms and less on the lower body.

triCeps Extension

If available, use a kettlebell or dumbbells rather than a bar bell. The instability makes for a better arm workout. While standing or sitting, hold the bells straight above your head. Bend your elbows to lower the bells behind your shoulders. Repeatedly straighten and bend the arms.

duMBBeLL Bench Press

Lying on the floor or on a stable platform on your back, hold a weight in each hand. Press the weights toward the sky. Using one arm at a time will add difficulty to the exercise.

For each exercise, Schwab recommends 12 to 15 repetitions, with a goal of reaching three to four sets at each workout session. This will help develop a good base strength and help firm up the flabby parts. He recommends exercising five days a week, with a day of rest after the third day, and after the second day of exercise.

“You will see some benefits in a couple of weeks,” Schwab says.

One point to remember, he notes, is that in order to see nicely toned and shaped arms, one must also do regular cardio exercises to rid the body of excess fat.

OTHeR HelPFul tips: • Schwab says the weight that should be used depends on your own individual strength. He recommends visiting a local sporting goods store and trying out different weights to see what is most challenging.

• Protect your shoulders from injury when doing arm exercises, he warns. “The shoulders are the biggest thing to be careful with, [especially] with the movements where a weight is going behind the head like triceps extensions,” he says. “If there is any pain, stop doing it. You are doing something wrong.”

Beauty sleep is not a myth.

Without enough sleep, people compromise their health and appearance.

“In our society, it’s very common for people to be relatively sleep-deprived,” says Dr. Daniel Nepomuceno, a pulmonary and sleep doctor based in McHenry, Barrington and Elgin.

Lack of sleep can cause auto accidents, workplace accidents and problems with work performance, Nepomuceno says.

“We often get referred patients because they are having problems with their job performance,” he says.

But how much sleep does a person really need?

The National Sleep Foundation suggests that school-age children 5 to 10 years old receive 10 to 11 hours of sleep a night; those ages 10 to 17 receive eight to nine hours of sleep; and adults get seven to nine hours.

Unfortunately, based on a national survey, 30 percent of workers consistently get less than six hours of sleep, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Insufficient sleep can lead to serious health problems or even death. CDC reports that people lacking sleep are more likely to have hypertension, diabetes, depression, obesity, cancer and other chronic diseases.

Local doctors agree that lack of sleep stresses the body and is associated with medical problems, ranging from depression to heart conditions.

Social and family conflicts also arise because people can become irritable and act out of character, Nepomuceno says.

And without enough sleep, people probably won’t look their best either.

A recent Swedish study showed that people look healthier and more attractive after eight hours of sleep. The results were based on observers rating photos of healthy men and women after a normal night of sleep and after sleep deprivation.

Insomnia is the most common sleep problem.

However, it is often a symptom of another problem, such as stress, anxiety, depression or a health condition.

More women than men suffer from insomnia, Nepomuceno says. Older people also tend to have insomnia and other sleep disorders because of age-related health issues.

Doctors refer to sleep hygiene — creating good sleep habits — as an integral part of a health regimen.

“One of the biggest problems that people have with their sleep is that they don’t have a regular sleep time,” Nepomuceno says.

Have consistent bedtime and awake times, exercise early in the day, avoid caffeinated beverages and fall asleep in a quiet, dark environment, he advises.

Sleep medication with melatonin is an option if someone is having trouble falling asleep, he says, adding that sleeping pills should typically be used for only a

short while.

Other common sleep problems are snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, when breathing temporarily stops because the tongue and soft tissue collapse and block the airway.

Snoring and high blood pressure are signs of apnea, which is more common in men. However, some people are just snorers, and others have apnea without snoring or high blood pressure.

Sleep-disordered breathing can be risky because many people don’t even know they have a problem and walk around untreated. That can be dangerous because besides snoring and high blood pressure, other medical problems associated with apnea are congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, strokes and diabetes, local doctors say.

About 70 percent of people with obstructive sleep apnea are overweight or obese, according to the American Sleep Apnea Association.

“Overweightness or obesity is one of the main contributors to this condition,” says Dr. Gene Sherman, a certified sleep dentist and owner of Dental Care of Algonquin.

Changing a diet is usually the first suggestion to help someone with apnea or snoring, says Sherman, who also fits patients with oral appliances for both problems.

In fact, some people with mild apnea may be cured if they lose a significant amount of weight, Nepomuceno says.

people sleep on their back, so doctors also suggest they sleep on their side to see if that helps.

Like Nepomuceno, Sherman recommends going to bed at a consistent time.

Additionally, he suggests people avoid alcohol, eating and heavy exercise a few hours before bedtime.

If someone has indications of apnea or another sleep problem, Nepomuceno says to start with a primary care physician or a sleep doctor to arrange an overnight sleep study for a diagnosis.

“For treatment of sleep apnea, CPAP is the standard of care,” he says.

A machine called a CPAP — short for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure — provides oxygen through a mask.

Oral appliances, also called mandibular advancement devices, are legitimate for the treatment of apnea, Nepomuceno says, but they are best for patients with mild to moderate apnea. Patients typically consider using an oral appliance if they are uncomfortable wearing a CPAP mask.

An oral appliance, which looks like a double retainer, is fitted on a patient to move the lower jaw forward so the airway stays open, Sherman says.

CPAP machines and oral appliances for sleep-disordered breathing fall under medical insurance. All health insurance companies cover CPAP machines, Nepomuceno says. He advises his patients to check with their insurance company to see whether oral appliances are covered.

An oral device can cost between $2,000 and $3,000, Nepomuceno says, whereas a CPAP generally ranges from $500 to $2,000.

For those having a hard time falling asleep, a change of lifestyle may help. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine offers these tips: • If you’re not sleepy, do something relaxing, such as read a book or listen to music.

• If you’re still awake after 20 minutes, get out of bed and do something relaxing in another room until you’re sleepy. Your bedroom should not be associated with restlessness or boredom.

• Get up at the same time and keep a regular schedule.

• Avoid naps. But if you need one, don’t nap after 3 p.m.

• Don’t have caffeine after lunch.

• Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol within six hours of bedtime.

• Don’t go to bed hungry. However, eating a big meal just before bedtime also causes insomnia.

• Avoid sleeping pills or only use them for a short period. Most doctors do not prescribe sleeping pills for more than three weeks. mc

F

or the past 12 years, Diana Kenney has been the executive director of Downtown Crystal Lake/Main Street, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the historic downtown district as the heart of Crystal Lake.

Of the 52 Illinois Main Street programs in the state, Kenney is the longest standing manager, and she’s enjoyed her job immensely.

Today, the downtown features a nice mixture of restaurants and retailers that keep residents, visitors and businesses flowing through the city, she says.

But it wasn’t always that way.

In the 1980s, downtown Crystal Lake was a blighted area, Kenney says, with many buildings standing empty and devoid of foot traffic. Local government finally decided to create a tax increment financing – or TIF – district, to help redevelop the sad shape of downtown and attract new businesses.

In the middle of that 23-year TIF district cycle, Kenney came aboard to Downtown Crystal Lake/Main Street and continued the work that had begun.

“When I started, we had started to transform some of the streets and streetscapes,” Kenney says. “Main Street was under construction. A couple of years later, Woodstock Street went through that [process]. [It’s] been an evolution getting those streets to look the same and coordinate with each other.”

Kiosks and signage, street lamps, flower baskets and finally the gazebo at Depot Park at Williams and Woodstock streets have all been added to enhance the downtown’s visual appeal, Kenney says. New and old businesses are thriving, and the entire area feels a bit more upscale.

Most recently, Depot Park has become the host site to numerous new events, including a farmers market, lunch and dinner in the park events and the one-day Johnny Appleseed

festival that Kenney created, which now boasts a crowd of 5,000 to 7,000 for its “good oldfashioned fun,” Kenney says, noting it is one of her favorite events to coordinate for the city.

“We’ve been able to create a vibrant downtown,” she says.

And residents agree.

“It’s fun to come downtown,” says Eunice Fuhler of Crystal Lake, who recently attended a Dinner in the Park event at Depot Park with friends, including Ardelle Legel, who has lived in Crystal Lake for 64 years.

“They re-did the depot, which is very nice,” Legel adds. “I think these [events] in the park [are] lovely.”

For helping to restore and revitalize the downtown Crystal Lake area, Kenney recently was chosen as the recipient of one of seven inaugural McHenry County Magazine Women of Distinction Awards. She was awarded with her fellow winners at a luncheon May 15 at McHenry Country Club, where more than 200 people supported their fellow community leaders.

Of her award, Kenney says she appreciates the recognition, but she values the team of people that have worked with her to make downtown Crystal Lake what it is today.

“It wasn’t just me,” she’s quick to note.

“There’s a whole community of people interested in downtown – business owners, property owners, individuals in the community who realize your downtown is the center of your community, your nucleus.

“A lot of people were involved in the process of the TIF, creating the Main Street program – it was really a community effort. We [received] great support from the city.”

Kenney also is the president of the Crystal Lake Historical Society, and she has spent countless hours educating area residents about their heritage through fun activities such as trolley tours of the city, candlelight tours of the Colonel Palmer House and the “Dearly Departed” series, which this October will feature “The Mystery of the Body in the Lake” – an evening spent chronicling a major event in the 1920s that gave local townspeople much to speculate about.

She even published a vintage postcard book with postcards from the historical society’s collection and donated all of the proceeds to the society.

Her extensive knowledge of the city’s past also has played a direct role in the city’s decision to find ways to refurbish historical buildings instead of tearing them down.

It’s a quality of her leadership that has not gone unnoticed by residents.

“She keeps the memories alive,” says Sandy Young, who has lived in Crystal Lake for more than 50 years. “She doesn’t just do new things and ignore what was before. She didn’t just come and change things, and I think people appreciate that.” mc

A look back at starline

How Starline first started The Starline Factory in Harvard — a 270,000-square-foot building that has roots stemming into the 1800s — today houses many local businesses, Starline Gallery and Studios and weddings and events. The building itself has a long and intriguing history, and so does its future. Orrin Kinney, current owner of the Starline building, recently sat down with McHenry County Magazine Editor Stephanie N. Grimoldby to talk about Starline.

MC: you bought this entire building, which today you call starline Factory Inc., in the early 1990s.

How did the original starline company get started? kinney: It was the late 1800s when [Starline] started.

It was actually Hunt, Helm and Ferris [who] were the original founders, and they actually started in a little building downtown. It was kind of a hardware store. One of the guys was an inventor, and they teamed up. He did the inventing, and the other two marketed through the hardware store, and it grew. This [building] is part of the results through the years … . They hired more employees and they grew. The railroads were a big contributing factor because they could load everything on rail, and everything was rural, most of the applications, so it was shipped out to the farmers … . One of their product [lines] was toys. They actually did small coaster wagons and scooters.

MC: How did that original company become what this building is today? kinney: The Starline name came from a product line. The “Star” line was mainly the dairy products, and the toy line was called CannonBall. And then later the CannonBall name became door trac and hardware, so they had kind of two groups … they decided to just go with the Star line name, and it became Starline. And then it was sold to Chromalloy [American Corporation], which was a big conglomerate …

[Starline was] a thriving company. They had branches in Albany, N.Y., and Pennsylvania, even out in California.

And the dairy was big back then. They made the roof ventilators for barns … and they made stalls and stanchions and water bowls — everything dairy related kind of fell under the Starline name.

MC: Now you worked at starline, correct? kinney: I hired in to work here in 1981 when I came to town. I actually worked for another company, and that was when Chromalloy owned it … they were looking for

someone to manage the plant, so I hired in and I was here probably four or five years before I went off on my own.

MC: How did you enter back into the story? kinney: I went on my own with similar products and started a company called A-OK/Harvard Products making sliding door trac hardware and then got into walk doors and windows and things like that …

[Starline] was sold in the meantime … that was the period of time with the high interest rates and we were in the recession, and Chromalloy ended up with a lot of factories with like products, so they had excess capacity as far as manufacturing. Then, the founder died … and they started selling off businesses for having excess capacity. So, then Starline was actually put up for sale in [the mid-80s], and it was sold and it was some independent guys that bought it [and they renamed the company CannonBall Industries]. Then it was sold to another company because they had taken bankruptcy, and so they moved that up to Beloit — well that left this facility empty … .

MC: When you bought this property, did you buy it for your company? Or did you buy it to turn it into an art gallery? kinney: Well, it kind of evolved. Actually, I didn’t intend to buy this. I wanted [a portion of] the building on the other end, and I couldn’t make a deal with the guy, and I said, well, what if I bought some of your problems? … and the problem was the multi-story, because it was so run down and caved in. But I could identify with the building [because] a company that I first started to work for in Kankakee was a multi-story building just like it, and I was always fascinated with the way it was built.

And then the art shows … my son, he was in Chicago … he mentioned that if this building was in Chicago, the arts would really be in demand … so we tried out a couple art shows and one thing kind of led to another, and we thought wow, that seemed to be working pretty good.

MC: How many businesses are in the starline building now? kinney: On the north end is the newer building, that’s where we have [my] door business — A-OK/Harvard Products. Then the next building was the old foundry building for here … But I’ve got probably four or five small

businesses in there that we set up and made space and put them in various areas.

MC: How big was starline to the city of Harvard? kinney: The town built around the Starline. It really did. You look at some of the old pictures, and none of the houses you see over here [near Starline today] were here … and it seemed like everyone in town worked here at one time or another.

MC: How old are parts of this building? kinney: Well, 1898, [is] when they started … but then they added [on to the original building] and went both directions. In fact, one section, you can see where they added on, built up over the top, come back and put a third story on. That’s why when you look at the outside, the architecture of the brick and everything is kind of unusual, because it kind of goes up and then there’s something over it, and you wonder, “Why’d they do that?” But it was all about adding on through the years.

Yeah, if the building could talk, it would be really interesting.

Editor’s note: Today, Starline Factory Inc. is used for many functions. The Starline Gallery and Studios is home to many independent artist studios, as well as the popular Fourth Fridays art exhibits, which take place the fourth Friday of every month. In one of the largest rooms — the 13,000-square-foot Ferris Room — Kinney has approximately 14 weddings scheduled through 2013. And renovations continue at Starline Factory.

More design studios are being built for artists, including live-in work spaces, and a nonprofit radio station, Harvard Community Radio, currently is being built in a portion of the first floor. Kinney’s visions also include adding a bistro/restaurant, a separate coffee shop with free WiFi and more.
