Editor's Note We all try to find meaning in our day-today lives. We often turn to one another for guidance, self-worth, happiness, hope, reassurance. Grand sweeping questions involving the purpose of our very existence often cause strife and confusion, but there is a way to simplify – even something as farreaching and insurmountable as how to live each day with meaning.

In “The Book of Joy,” two of the world’s most preeminent spiritual leaders shed some light on the subject by saying that living with meaning is simply living each day to serve or help others, or – at the very least – not to harm others.

We are perpetually in motion, constantly affecting one another, and each interaction – no matter how small – can create a ripple.

Just seeing someone doing something nice for someone else oftentimes results in your own good-doing. Even a smile from a stranger has the ability to momentarily brighten your mood. And, of course, the same is true at the other end of the spectrum. Negativity and anger can breed more negativity and anger.

Sometimes not harming someone else is all that we’re capable of on any given day, which – in itself – is actually an act of kindness.

Cover girl Kellee Brewer Stall, playwright and founder of the Inhabit Theater Company, takes her shows on the road, exposing audience members to different businesses across McHenry County, from coffee shops to art studios.

Rounding out the list of locals who contributed their stories to this month’s issue are an Algonquin graphic artist who is undergoing a yearlong project aimed at spreading positivity through art; a former Catholic priest who dedicates his life both to God and his wife – a former nun; a Richmond couple who were named this year’s Philanthropists of the Year by the McHenry County Community Foundation; a woman whose love of horses led her to offer equine therapy on her Woodstock farm; an adventurer whose search for new horizons led to trekking the Himalayas in Nepal; and a Crystal Lake resident who traced her family’s roots to uncover the life story of her trailblazing, resilient great-grandmother.

Woodstock resident’s Himalayan trek an enlightening experience

raduate high school, advance to college, earn a degree, land a steady job, marry and have children.

In one breath, 21-yearold Eli Warriner of Woodstock recounts “kind of the American dream that I was raised to pursue.”

In the next breath, Warriner speaks about how a springtime trek through the Himalayas mountain range in Nepal changed that worldview completely, sending the McHenry County College student’s aspirations moving in another direction.

“Going on this trip really opened my eyes,” Warriner says. “It’s like, ‘Hey, I don’t have to live that way. If I want to go and travel – as long as I have the means to do it – then I can go do that, and I can keep exploring and keep, kind of, pushing my own frontier.’”

friend, Kai Johnson, the son of Warriner’s father’s best friend, who often tried to get Warriner to venture to eastern Asia.

Johnson worked at an organization called Rustic Pathways, which coordinates international adventure and community service programs for students worldwide.

With Johnson’s window in the Far East waning, he extended the opportunity one last time.

“Stay there – stay in your bed – and you get up the next day,” Warriner says. “The next morning, you start walking. We walk the whole day, and you end up at the next tea house, and rinse and repeat.”

Seeing the Himalayas up close provided Warriner with plenty of perspective.

“All in all, it was just the trip of a lifetime,” Warriner says. “I’m really glad I did it.”

Warriner visited with Johnson for a time in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu before No stranger to travel with friends and family, embarking on a trek through the Annapurna Warriner ventured to Nepal, and later India, region of the Himalayas, where he and a for 30 days – from late May to late June. guide climbed to heights of 13,000 feet.

They trekked about 20 miles a day for seven days, stopping at “tea houses” – places with basic shelter and nourishing tea – along the way.

“I learned that I really had no idea of the scope of how big the world is and how different a culture can be,” he says. “I’ve been to France and Germany before, and they have different cultures, but you still get a very Western feel when you’re there.

But this was, I had never been exposed to Eastern culture before. I had read about it and stuff, but living in the West, that’s pretty much all you can do.

The remarkable hospitality he experienced from Nepalese and Indian citizens fueled a passion to keep traveling in the long-term. After a few days of observing people staring at him – likely the novelty of seeing “a 6-foot-3 redhead” in a foreign land – Warriner decided to stop feeling out of place.

“Instead, I would smile and wave at them, and every time they were overjoyed to say hi to me or talk to me, or even just wave,” Warriner says. “And it was really cool just to see the general levels of humanity that exist throughout the world. They’re not just here in the hometown that I’ve grown to know, but you can go anywhere in the world and find the base human love that exists in all of us.”

Warriner says he’s on track to complete an Associate of Arts from McHenry County College in spring 2018. After that, he’ll look to transfer to a school in France or Germany to complete a business degree, likely with an emphasis in online marketing.

Once his schooling is over, Warriner says that he would like to return to the traveling life. He urges others to follow suit, even those fearful of potential snags.

“Just know that you face each problem one step at a time, and you solve each problem one problem at a time, and you get through it one day at a time,” Warriner says. “And it ends up being the experience of a lifetime. And it’s nothing that you will ever regret – traveling.”

Linda Bruce admits her self-described role at Soulful Prairies is a mouthful, if only because she has fused so many of her interests into one endeavor. “I marry counseling, social work and coaching with the equine piece,� Bruce says in assessing her mission at the organic farm, located at 4706 Alden Road in Woodstock.

Moments later, perhaps channeling the advice she gives to couples, families and individuals at any given session, Bruce simplifies things. She says that she helps horses help people, and vice-versa.

Bruce launched Soulful Prairies in 2014 after earlier deliberation about where to steer her life next. She completed degrees in social work and counseling and worked as a clinical social worker early in her career before shifting into stay-at-home mom mode to raise the four children she has with her husband.

Boasting a longstanding affinity for horses and riding from her youth in Arlington Heights, Bruce acted on instinct to bring everything together.

At Soulful Prairies, lessons hinge on the healing power of horses and the peaceful energy they elicit.

“I would say horses bring out in us some characteristics we don’t always see when we’re interacting with a human,” Bruce says. “And because they bring out those characteristics, you’re able to look at them, and then – through experiential processes – really look at it and process it in a different way than you might if you were sitting in a chair talking to someone.”

Such is the lifeblood of the Equine Gestalt Coaching Method, a discipline Bruce mastered and internalized at Soulful Prairies.

“The horses pick up on if you’re tentative, if you’re scared. Any of those things,” Bruce says. “If you’re a person who’s kind of bossy, they pick up on all that, and they kind of give you signals and signs that are really clear, and it’s so much easier to kind of see it in a horse and go, ‘Wow, I guess I am. I do have those characteristics.’ It’s easier than a human being telling you that. So, I just feel like it’s a softer way of them discovering, in themselves, what they probably already know. But, when it comes from a horse, it feels different.”

Bruce also incorporates horses into the “Feed Your Soul” women’s group, which meets for about two hours on the third Thursday night of each month. The horses help participants learn about nonverbal communication. After group members have discussed a topic, the night ends with meditation aided by use of a gong.

Dedicated duo Richmond couple honored as Philanthropists of the Year

For Russ and Sara Foszcz of Richmond, service and giving are an ongoing part of life.

Whether it’s launching a nonprofit, providing a vital service to existing agencies, or simply serving as dedicated volunteers, the couple shares a passion for helping others.

“We often joke that our date nights usually include a fundraising event or going to something that involves another nonprofit or community event,” says Sara Foszcz.

Recently, the McHenry County Community Foundation – which aims to improve the quality of life in the county through philanthropic efforts – selected Russ and Sara Foszcz as Philanthropists of the Year for 2017.

The award recognizes those whose generosity has made a significant impact on McHenry County residents.

“I can think of no one who is more deserving of this recognition,” writes Lisa Haderline, executive director of the Land Conservancy of McHenry County.

“Not only are Russ and Sara financially generous, but they are generous with their time and talent, working hard to support many important nonprofit efforts in the county.”

The award left the couple honored and humbled.

“Sara and I have tried to stay behind the scenes because we want to give attention to the people out there who are doing such good works,” says Russ Foszcz.

Sara Foszcz founded Main Stay Therapeutic Riding Program, which provides equine and animal therapy to children and adults with a variety of developmental, physical and emotional needs.

Russ Foszcz has held leadership roles with a number of McHenry County nonprofit agencies and is the founder of MC NPO Technical Support, which provides technology service and consulting to nonprofit agencies on a sliding scale.

“I’m thrilled that [Russ] is being recognized for his huge dedication to our area. He’s the quiet rock making things work,” says Sara Foszcz.

Sara Foszcz, who was born and raised in McHenry County, and her husband, a native of Fox Lake, both learned the importance of philanthropy from their parents. Russ Foszcz’s family was active in the local Lions Club, Rotary and worked to elect President John F. Kennedy. Sara Foszcz’s family was active as well, having been inspired by the early 1960s Civil Rights movement.

“We had such incredible role models in Dr. Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy,” she says.

The couple wed in 1983, and after launching Main Stay a few years later, their passion to serve grew even stronger. While Russ Foszcz continued in his career as an IT instructor at McHenry County College, he became more aware of the technology challenges nonprofit agencies faced.

After learning about a former Microsoft executive who started a company to provide affordable technology services to nonprofit agencies, Russ Foszcz launched MC NPO Technology Support, Inc. in 2007.

Working on a sliding scale allows the company to provide quality service without the need to fundraise. The company has continuous partnerships with about 25 local agencies, including Family Health Partnership.

Russ Foszcz retired from MC NPO Technology Support in 2016, but he and his wife are still involved with a number of organizations, ranging from the Mental Health Resource League to the Food Shed Co-op program.

‘Role’ model For Inhabit Theater Company founder Kellee Brewer Stall, the world’s a stage

By ELIZABETH HARMON | Photos by RON MCKINNEY Crystal Lake resident Kellee Brewer Stall, founder and director of the Inhabit Theater Company, loves to challenge the notion of what great theater can be.

The Inhabit Company does that by taking every show on the road.

Rather than occupy a permanent home, the company performs in locations that have included a coffee shop, a sober nightclub and, most recently, an art studio.

“It’s been really cool to collaborate with the community, and bring audiences to a new place that they might not know about,” says Stall.

This spring, Inhabit performed “A Vaudeville Fiasco!” at The Other Side, a sober nightclub in Crystal Lake. And, this fall, the company moved into downtown Crystal Lake’s Muse Art for “The Callback,” a unique production performed in two separate rooms simultaneously.

“At intermission, the audiences swap sides. It’s really fun, and the actors get to perform it twice.”

She and co-writer Janelle McHugh created “The Callback” specifically for the Muse Art space, after the studio’s owner Heather Muse had seen “A Vaudeville Fiasco,” and offered to host a show.

In the Northwest Herald’s review of “The Callback,” Regina Belt-Daniels praised Stall’s direction as energetic, emphatic and decisive: “She knows her actors, her community (with subtle thanks worked into the clever script), and her performance space.”

Stall has been involved with local and regional theater for a number of years.

As a student at McHenry County College, she appeared in productions at the Black Box Theater before transferring to Northern Illinois University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting.

After graduation, she taught classes and directed productions for Christian Youth Theater (now Spotlight Youth Theater), before taking time off to raise her family.

She returned to theater six years ago, when she was invited to direct a production for Elgin’s Green Room company. At the Green Room, she worked with experienced local actors from a variety of backgrounds.

“Some had training and were getting their degrees in the arts, others had worked in community theater,” she says.

Since then, helping actors develop their talent has become one of Stall’s passions.

She enjoys working with actors who are eager to learn, and says there is a wide pool of talent here in McHenry County.

Rather than hold auditions for Inhabit’s productions, she attends area community, college and even high school productions and invites actors to be part of Inhabit.

Her future plans for Inhabit include collaborating with other area theater companies, and finding the next great space, possibly a restaurant, for a production.

“Muse was a challenge because we have no curtain to hide behind, and the audience is right there, sitting in the middle,” she says.

Divine intervention

Priest dedicates life to love of God and wife

Father Jim Swarthout never wanted to be a priest.

Though he was raised Catholic, he had little interest in furthering his religious studies and was ready to start a career in recreation administration in Lake Forest.

“Being a priest was not a priority by any means,” says Swarthout. “I ran from it; it’s the last thing I wanted to do. But I think once God gets you, he doesn’t let you go.”

Today, Swarthout is an Episcopal priest and the director of clergy and alumni relationships at Rosecrance Health Network, which has offices in Crystal Lake and McHenry. But he began his religious career in the Catholic Church. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1986 in the Rockford Diocese and also worked within the Chicago Archdiocese.

He served faithfully in the church for more than 14 years, but he also specialized in what he calls “selective rule-breaking.” As a priest, he met and fell in love with Claudia, a Catholic nun. For six years, the pair grappled with how to reconcile their blossoming love and their religion.

“I was struggling with two deep loves: a deep love for God and a deep love for Claudia,” says Swarthout. “If something was not meant to work, the relationship would have died, whether with God or Claudia, and it did not. I believe I was called to merge those relationships.”

So, 19 years ago, the two married and left the Catholic Church.

Swarthout, who already had a master’s degree in theology, began doctoral work and became an 20 | NOVEMBER 2017 | MCHENRY COUNTY MAGAZINE

Episcopal priest. He still maintains strong bonds with his former Catholic colleagues.

Along with introducing him to his wife, his career also helped Swarthout discover another great passion: mental health and addiction services. As a young Catholic priest, he served as a chaplain in the drug and alcohol unit of a Veterans Affairs hospital in California and did clinical work in mental health at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

As someone who had struggled with addiction and depression, he found he had a deep compassion for those struggling with similar issues.

“I don’t believe we surrender to recovery, I believe we’re chosen,” he says. “People who have addiction and mental health issues, PEOPLE

they’ve seen hell on earth and found joy again in recovery.”

In order to better serve this population, Swarthout has crafted a unique role as both a priest and a community collaborator. He is a certified advance addiction counselor and relapse prevention therapist, and the only clergy in the country to be a certified intervention specialist.

In these roles, Swarthout uses a compassionate approach and measured outcome process to address mental health concerns with clergy, bishops, corporations and congregations. Searching for Anna Sheridan Family lore leads local to uncover the story of her trailblazing, resilient great-grandmother

s a child, Sue Dobbe-Leahy knew little about her great-grandmother. DobbeLeahy remembers her family spending holidays with her father’s grandma, Anna Sheridan, who walked with a cane, loved to bake and called her grandchildren “darling.”

Sheridan was raised on a farm in Woodstock.

She was born Anna Louise Lyons in 1872 to Irish immigrants who raised Sheridan and 14 siblings. Sheridan moved to Chicago as an adult and married in 1893. Her first husband died of a heart problem a little over a year later. She would marry twice more and lose both husbands and a young son.

It was only after Sheridan passed away that Dobbe-Leahy uncovered her real story, and – it turns out – it was quite a fascinating story, indeed.

Sheridan was one of the first 12 policewomen in Chicago. A trailblazer and an advocate for women and children, she served on the force for two decades. Her story is one of grit, resilience and rising above devastating circumstances.

Now Dobbe-Leahy has taken it upon herself to share her great-grandmother’s story.

Dobbe-Leahy began to piece together Sheridan’s life when she received a scrapbook full of newspaper clippings from her father. The Anna Sheridan scrapbook contained more than 200 articles that Photo provided spanned decades and all mentioned her greatgrandmother. After her third husband’s death in 1910, Sheridan was left bankrupt while raising two young daughters. She began working at Marshall Fields as a saleswoman. Then she learned that the city had begun hiring women as part of a campaign to purge the city of vice. She applied for the job and was appointed by Mayor Carter N. Harrison on March 8, 1914, becoming just the 12th policewoman in Chicago’s history, says Dobbe-Leahy.

Her main assignment was with the juvenile court and the state’s attorney’s office, where she acted as a guide and support system for women and children within the court system.

Her career took off from there. She became known for her marksmanship and won countless pistol shooting contests. Sheridan continued to compete in and win these competitions into her 60s.

Sheridan also pursued an education. Her experience in the court system had spurred her interest in the law, and she began attending classes as soon as her daughters were old enough to be left alone in the evenings. She graduated with honors from DePaul University with her bachelor’s degree and then returned for her law degree. www.nwherald.com/magazine

Sheridan died at the age of 91 in 1963. She was survived by five grandchildren, including one grandson, Dobbe-Leahy’s father. Dobbe-Leahy hopes

to preserve and share her great-grandmother’s legacy by presented Sheridan’s story through a memoir and several speaking opportunities that are currently in the planning stages, including a presentation at a women’s leadership conference.

“I’m so excited to share the story of Anna’s life,” DobbeLeahy says. “She managed all that adversity in such positive ways. This is a woman whose story could inspire a lot of people.”

Once she retired from the police force, 20 years of service and at the age of 62, she began to practice law. Sheridan ran her practice out of her May Street home for 15 years.

Her specialty was taking on cases for the judicial system’s most vulnerable populations, women and children, using the relationships she had built in her years as a policewoman.

‘IF THERE’S SOMETHING THAT YOU WANT, GO FOR IT’ Algonquin graphic artist’s yearlong project promotes personal growth, perseverance

By KELSEY O’CONNOR Photos by RON MCKINNEY Rebecca Gallagher has always been fascinated with illustration, but something seemed to get in the way each time she tried to pursue the art form. So, this year, she decided to face those obstacles head on.

The Algonquin resident is in the midst of a challenge to create a unique hand-lettered illustration every day for a year. She created an Instagram account to chronicle her journey and share her work with the world. The exercise has helped her craft a distinct point of view as an illustrator.

“The initial purpose was to get more comfortable with putting work out there,” she says. “I wanted to hone my style and see what sort of graphical look was going to come out when I gave myself the space to try that.”

Gallagher has been a self-employed graphic designer for the past 20 years. She was always intrigued by illustration, but decided to focus on graphic design

-Continued from page 27 during her undergraduate studies. She tried to pursue a master’s degree in illustration about 10 years ago, but the recession forced her to change her plans.

At that point, the artist thought her dream of learning to illustrate might be over, but her interest in the craft never faded. So, she decided to start a 30-day challenge to kick-start her foray into illustration while also refining her personal aesthetic. She found the exercise was so constructive that she extended it to a full year.

Each day, Gallagher draws each creation by hand before moving to the computer where she uses design software to experiment with the layout, design and color. All her prints contain a phrase or just a few words inspired by Gallagher’s observations and insights about life as a parent and artist.

“There’s quite a range of topics,” she says. “It’s often something that resonates with and has an element of humor or whimsy. Personal growth and foundational truths are themes that tend to pop up.”

Her Instagram posts have amassed a small, but enthusiastic, following over the past year.

The feedback has been so positive that she started an Etsy shop where she sells prints of her work. Though the response to her work has been encouraging, Gallagher says the most crucial thing the challenge has taught her is the importance of showing up and doing the work.

“You can read tutorials all day long but you’re only going to get better by doing,” she says.

“When I look at the posts I’ve done when I first started compared to now, I can see how I’ve grown and learned so much from working that muscle.”

She encourages others looking to make a career shift or pursue an interest to just get started.

“If there’s something that you want, go for it,” says Gallagher. “Put one foot in front of the other and try. I think about all the time I had been waiting for someone to tell me that it’s OK to try, as opposed to giving myself permission to try something new. Take steps toward that dream because that’s’ the only way you’re going to achieve that.”

‘LEE’ LINKLATER TO THE RESCUE

After thirty years, Assisi Animal Foundation founder shows no signs of slowing down

By MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE | Photo by FROM ME 2 YOU PHOTOGRAPHY Before she established the Assisi Animal Foundation, moved roughly 50 miles from Chicago to Crystal Lake, and even before she helped the first animal find its forever home, there was determination and a dream.

Isabelle “Lee” Linklater and her mother, Isabelle L. Yarosh, relied on their determination to help make the vision of a no-kill shelter for dogs and cats a reality – even in the face of challenges and financial hardships.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Linklater and Yarosh’s founding of Assisi Animal Foundation and what would become McHenry Country’s first no-kill animal shelter. They chose to name the foundation after Saint Francis of Assisi, a 13th century monk who demonstrated care for animals.

Yet, the women didn’t give up. They took out a mortgage on their property, sought help from volunteers and, with Linklater commuting to her teaching position in Chicago during the day and overseeing work on the property in the evening and weekends, they pressed on.

“We already had a commitment to these animals that were being brought to us, so we just had to find a way to go forward. The alternative was unacceptable,” Linklater says.

Today, Linklater, 81, still demonstrates an unstoppable desire to help animals and make a positive impact on those around her.

Wendy Mills, a board member with Assisi Animal Foundation, says that Linklater will do whatever is needed to care for animals.

“It seemed an appropriate choice,” Linklater says.

“Every animal brought here really has the best chance to survive because of the love and care Lee gives to it,” Mills says.

Ever since she could remember, there were rescued pets to care for in her own family’s home in Chicago, she says. Linklater was a teacher in the city and, out of her own love of animals and interest, she pursued studies in humane education and animal welfare, bringing her passion for animals to her work as an elementary and middle school teacher.

The foundation relies on private funding and two large fundraisers to support the animal care.

Every April there is a fashion show fundraiser and, in the fall, a dinner dance. This year’s event will take place Nov. 11 at the Crystal Lake Country Club, with the theme “Celebrate and Salute Our Veterans.”

Eventually, Linklater and Yarosh found a spot in Crystal Lake to build their animal shelter, and hired a contractor who made many promises.

Their leap of faith into the endeavor hit a brick wall when Linklater learned that the contractor had performed inadequate work, taken the equipment and left the two women with a mess of a building and a large financial loss.

“It was a rough struggle,” Linklater says.

In addition to the shelter, the foundation supports a program for animal assisted therapy visits to convalescent and nursing centers.

Linklater says that this program started in 1987, even before the shelter was opened.

While it has been 14 years since her mother died, Linklater, who is beyond the age of retirement, shows no signs of slowing down, continuing to work tirelessly to keep the dream going.

Linklater finds it hard to believe it has been 30 years since the foundation opened its doors, she says.

“Thirty years goes by in a blink,” Linklater says.

“I had always thought this is what I want to do, so I’m going to make it work.”

Through the years, she has helped countless homeless animals find a family. And, while running a no-kill shelter, she also has cared for other animals that ended up living out the remainder of their lives in the shelter.

ust about everyone has some experience with consoling or assisting someone else after a devastating personal loss. For most of us, though, the prospect of making a career out of such efforts sounds a bit daunting.

Their 9,500-square-foot facility in Huntley, opened in 2010, features a crematory, two chapels, a reception area, a kitchenette and a childrens room. That new location allowed them to move out of their original storefront location, which the business had made use of since 2008.

DeFiore said that staying on top of what’s going on in the field of mortuary science is an important part of properly serving the community members who come to them for their services.

They can also help family members with the paperwork required for filing for veterans, Social Security of life insurance benefits. Checklists provided by the funeral home can help to ensure that no key steps are missed at such a difficult time.

These and other features are important to the funeral home’s ongoing prosperity, but to DeFiore, the key to success in any sphere is simple: “Dream big, work hard and love what you do.”

hether you like it or not, the month of November marks the beginning of the holiday season.

It’s a time of indulgences and as the temperature lowers, so does our ability to just say ‘no’ to that taste-bud tantalizing dessert menu that has been taunting us since summer. It’s time to give in.

Don’t fight it any longer. Otherwise, what’s the point of a New Year’s resolution?

Luckily, there is no shortage of local sweet spots to bask in that moment during a night out, when your waiter asks, “Would you like to see a dessert menu?”

And your response: “Yes. Yes I would.”

DA BAFFONE CUCINA ITALIANA The Tiramisu (two layers of mascarpone cheese and fresh cream, between ladyfingers soaked in rum and espresso) might be this Italian eatery’s house specialty, but it also offers cannoli and gelato flights. It’s been more than 86 years since York Furrier first opened its doors in 1931 at the York Street location in Elmhurst.

The third generation family-owned retailer, which is adorned with co-owner Kathy Rezny’s family crest, is known for its dedication to its craft, personalized customer service, and an extensive selection of gorgeous furs, stylish fine outerwear and luxe accessories. Monsters? Mushrooms? Reaping? The titles of my November book recommendations don’t sound like they would be plausible picks for the “People” issue, but the opposite is the case. These reads are all about the people we love, how we are grateful for them and how we show it.  “MY FAVORITE THING IS MONSTERS (BOOK ONE)”

By Emil Ferris You can tell that “My Favorite Thing is Monsters” is a work of genius as soon as you open it to the first page.

This graphic novel, set in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood in the late ’60s, is not only lushly illustrated, it’s also a story as intriguing as the drawings that help tell it.

Karen Reyes, a 10-year-old girl who loves drawing and all-things horror, is distraught when her beautiful neighbor Anka dies under mysterious and likely-murderous circumstances. Determined to find the killer, Karen digs into Anka’s sad history, and finds that many people – Anka’s husband, neighbors and even Karen’s mother and brother – all knew more about Anka’s past than they let on and are potential suspects.

Ferris’s drawings are unique, expressive and just plain stunning – every one of them could be up in an art museum, but – instead – Ferris has used them to tell a story that is partly inspired by her experiences growing up in the city. If you read “My Favorite Thing is Monsters,” chances are you’ll want to immediately pre-order Book Two (with a tentative April 2018 release date).

 “MEN WE REAPED”

By Jesmyn Ward Jesmyn Ward’s memoir, “Men We Reaped,” is her account of 2000 to 2004, a period of her life in which five men she knew and loved died each year. She also puts the deaths in context by sharing the details of the years leading up to them, growing up in a big and torn-apart family in Mississippi, as well as the years of mourning and healing that follow.

Ward doesn’t hide anything, and “Men We Reaped” leaves you raw as she makes herself vulnerable. As you see her personal journey, you are right there with her when she asks the question over and over: “How could this happen?”

 “MYCOLOGY”

By Joan Wilking Mycology is the study of fungi, but Joan Wilking’s novel “Mycology” is only incidentally related to its mushroominspired title.

The up-and-coming artist Charlotte, the modest pianist Martin and the extraordinary escort Luca are all brought together through their mutual affection for Haze, a harsh but passionate dancer who interacts with the three of them in very different ways.

The book goes easy at first, introducing you to the principal players and familiarizing you with the pace and setting (starting in the ’50s and moving through to the ’80s AIDS epidemic).

Like the mycelium of a fungus, however, “Mycology” goes on to weave the stories of the three characters in a natural but intricate way.

The book makes a compelling case that institutional racism and economic inequality was at play in the deaths of all the men she honors in this book, but as much as she writes about the unjust causes of the deaths, she also writes about the effect the tragedies have had on her and the people she loves.

n 2006, right after making her first collection of wood and clay jewelry designs, Patricia Lynn Eagle of Crystal Lake brought the jewelry to show a friend at a coffee shop, where the pieces were noticed by another customer. The encounter with the coffeehouse customer ended up leading to a jewelry and giftware design licensing contract with international company Roman, Inc. Soon after, the artist decided to enroll in the McHenry County College metalworking jewelry class, where she spent “several happy semesters learning how to use a torch and other tools to fabricate metal, set stones and much more,” she says.

When creating jewelry, Eagle says that she rarely sketches or has much of a plan as to how a piece is going to turn out, which allows the artist to “enjoy the process of letting a design unfold.”

Her current Native Prairie collection features gently “aged” textures, patinas and softly glowing natural gemstones in the colors of earth, water and sky, and is inspired by the spirit and beauty of the area’s vast native prairies.

“Prairie colors of windswept grass, azure skies, silvery waters and sun drenched stones are prevalent in my work,” Eagle says, adding that she strives to use uncomplicated processes and materials, and has been told her jewelry conveys a sense of peace, which has always been her intent.

Although her contract to license designs to Roman, Inc., was very rewarding, she learned that the joy is in creating each piece by hand.
