Another troop also is planning on implementing a butterfly garden in the courtyard as well, according to Glimco.

Glimco, who said he has so much appreciation for the Scouts and Scouting program, added that having the outdoor classroom also will bring a sense of nature and resources into learning for the students.

“Bottom line is it’s nice for kids to see how other students get involved in the community,” Glimco said. “I hope our younger students are inspired by it.”

WILLOW SPRINGS – A Willow Springs resident and senior at Lyons Township High School broke ground Monday during the first day of his Eagle Scout project at Pleasantdale Middle School.

Troop 69 Scout Gabe Thalji will create an outdoor classroom for students in the Burr Ridge school’s courtyard.

Thalji said Monday’s work was just the beginning of the project.

While day one was just enough to lay the stone patio, the outdoor classroom eventually will have 20 log stools and four log benches for students to sit on, according to Thalji. He said the log stools and benches should be ready within a couple of weeks.

Thalji, a former student at Pleasantdale Middle School, said he chose the school because he wanted to thank them while doing something with the school’s courtyard.

“I want to showcase to everyone at Pleasantdale what Boy Scouts is really about,” Thalji said. “It’s giving back to the community and [showing] how someone like me, who’s not an adult yet, can do something like this.”

Thalji, who has two older brothers who are Eagle Scouts, said he decided to go for the title after seeing how it made his brothers become better people. “[The project] means a lot to me because it’s always been something I’ve wanted to do,” Thalji said.

Once the project is complete, Thalji will write a final draft describing the project, have an interview with the Eagle Scout Board, and if he pass-

Along the same lines as her fellow finalists, Bonnie Krozel, of Western Springs, said she wishes whoever wins the very best.

“It was a great honor to be picked and nominated by The Treasure Chest,” Krozel said.

“I do need the new roof, but I hope whoever wins it really deserves it.”

Krozel, who said she’s the luckiest person because of her family, friends and faith, also thanked Licitra Roofing for offering such a contest.

The best part of this contest is it’s a simple thing being offered to deserving families, according to the fourth finalist Sharon Galloway.

She said winning this roof would take a major weight off her and her husband’s shoulders.

“It was a hard decision to put our story out there, but Westchester is a town that pulls together and the response that I’ve gotten … It’s been a really humbling experience,” Galloway said.

BROOKFIELD – After launching its No Roof Left Behind program in January, Licitra Roofing has narrowed down the contestants to just four finalists and now is asking for the public to make the final decision.

1. Public hearing about sidewalks in 700 block of 12th Avenue

During the meeting, the Board of Trustees opened up a public hearing regarding the proposed idea of implementing sidewalks along the 700 block of 12th Avenue.

After Village Manager Robert Pilipiszyn read a few written comments from residents opposing the creation of sidewalks, the floor was opened to residents in attendance who wished to speak about the proposal.

One resident, Betty Guyer, voiced her opinion against the sidewalks by emphasizing safety issues along 12th Avenue.

“There is a distinct safety issue on that block,” Guyer said. “It occurs at any time, but particularly on days when Sedgwick Park is being used for various activities.”

Guyer said she worried about vehicles speeding down the block looking for parking, as well.

Groups to work together for special-needs program

LA GRANGE – The La Grange Area Department of Special Education and the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine have partnered to give special education students an opportunity to work at the university.

Through the program, high school-aged students work at the school from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during the summer.

The students do a variety of office work, including discarding documents, sorting through files and more, according to Donna Karl, director of administration for the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Therapeutics at Loyola.

“It’s a good experience for these students,” Karl said.

First Avenue bike path becoming a reality There has been talk about constructing a path along First Avenue from Riverside-Brookfield High School to 26th Street in North Riverside to provide a safe route for students to walk and bike to school since 1968. However, it has been just that; talk.

For whatever reason, previous local officials and bureaucrats could never agree on how to get the project off the ground, and so it fell by the wayside. Year after year, students continue to walk through the forest preserves on a footpath trail that they have created themselves, and bike along busy First Avenue.

Over the past several months, I have been meeting COMMUNITY regularly with presidents VOICE Hugh Hermanek of North Jeff Riverside, Ben Sells of Tobolski Riverside, Kit Ketchmark of Brookfield. Officials from the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Cook County Forest Preserve, Friends of the Forest Preserve and Riverside-Brookfield High School. For the first time everyone truly is on the same page and ready and willing to work together.

I am happy to report Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle recently committed to providing a $100,000 matching contribution to the funds that Riverside, North Riverside and Riverside Brookfield High School have already committed. With these funds, the plan is to complete the first leg of the path – from the west side of First Avenue from Ridgewood Road to 31st Street – by the end of the year. The second phase of the project would be to continue this trail from 31st Street heading north along Golf View Road to 26th Street. I asked state Sen. Martin Sandoval, D-Cicero, to attend our monthly meeting to see if he could assist us. Sen. Sandoval has committed to helping us find the $600,000 in Springfield to complete this project. We are grateful for his help, and the additional support from the state could be a game changer. It is our goal to begin this phase of construction next year.

The final phase is to connect the Salt Creek Trail. After the 31st Street bridge was rebuilt over Salt Creek, it included a sidewalk but apparently no one followed up to create a path to connect it to the trail, leaving many to dub it the “Bridge to Nowhere.”

Connecting these trails would be a huge benefit to our residents and bicycle enthusiasts. In the span of months we now have project specifications, cost estimates and most importantly, funding commitments. At a time when so little seems to be getting done by our federal government it is refreshing to see local governments and agencies working tirelessly on a long stalled project that will help our residents and students tremendously.

Here’s why pension systems are broken

I recently read where District 58 has approved for teachers a raise this year a shade over 2 percent.

Certainly, that’s in line with where our economy is at and most businesses. At the same time, they approved three principals a 6 percent-plus raise over the next three years. These three individuals, as it was reported, are retiring in three years. So, what does the nearly 20 percent raise mean?

The school board is fattening their

congress outlawed that? I guess those administrators voting for this are banking on the same happening to them when they leave.

Why do the principals get nearly 20 percent over three years when the teachers will be lucky to get 7 percent? I guess this is a perfect example why the pension systems in Illinois are broken.

Use ‘undocumented’ money for homeless The huge increase of [undocumented immigrants] swarming across our border and the administration’s rush to settle them all over our county is presented to us as a coincidence involving children that need our tender-hearted attention.

This is just the latest well-planned attempt to change the U.S.A.’s demographics. The new wrinkle this time is quote: It’s for the children.

The advanced planning to create this crisis is obvious and shameful. The result will be permanent residency followed by amnesty followed by social welfare programs that would make Sweden jealous … how about directing even a fraction of the money and effort being spent on immigrant children to end our own homelessness?

by BNSF freight train WESTCHESTER – A 25-year-old Westchester man died Sunday morning after being struck by a BNSF freight train in Willow Springs.

Matthew Porbeski, of the 11400 block of Enterprise

Chama Gaucha carves out delicious niche DOWNERS GROVE – Never having eaten at a Brazilian steakhouse, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect when I walked into Chama Gaucha, but the entire evening was impressive from beginning to end.

The hostess seated us at a menu-less table in the spacious dining room, and explained we were welcome to enjoy whatever we wanted from the circular salad bar.

Set in the center of the room, its array of offerings was a visual work of art. The design of the Downers Grove restaurant is richly accented with stone and wood, and the room boasts an eye-catching wine cellar.

We each received a small square card – red on one side and green on the other. This worked like a traffic signal, directing the many servers who carry carving knives and skewers of cuts of meats they skillfully slice to order. The men were dressed in elegant incarnations of the South American gaucho – their version of our cowboy. The restaurant’s tables are well spaced so the gauchos can roam freely.

After piling our plates with salad and veggies, my companion and I returned to our table, where a server pulled out my chair as I sat down.

Our tabletop quickly was filled with traditional Brazilian sides, including a warm basket of cheese bread, a plate of garlic mashed potatoes, warm fried bananas and fried polenta.

After making some room on our plates, we flipped our cards to the green side, and the gaucho-attired servers began to stop at our table. One after another, they offered us a slice or two of their carnivorous temptations.

Lamb, pork, chicken and beef. We ate until we couldn’t fit another bite. When we found a favorite, the gauchos offered us extra helpings, and when we spotted a stack of savory sausages across the

Back in the Pampas, gauchos can be found tending large herds of cattle in parts of Brazil and several neighboring countries. At the end of their long day, the gauchos gather around the churrasco or fire pit to eat and share stories. That dining experience inspired the South American steakhouse concept. The local

restaurant takes the name Chama from the Portuguese word for flame.

I doubt real gauchos ate like I did at Chama Gaucha, though. The entire evening, with its five-star service, surpassed any of my typical dining experiences. When my date dropped his napkin, someone handed him one over his shoulder almost instantly.

Chama Gaucha also has an extensive wine menu divided by region, and the restaurant staff was eager to share recommendations.

I would suggest guests save a little room for dessert, because by the time I’d finished clearing the last helping from my plate, I simply couldn’t indulge further.

Because of its all-you-caneat service, Chama Gaucha may be a bit pricier than your average meal out, but it’s an out-of-the-ordinary dining experience, whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself.

WESTERN SPRINGS – After Lyons Township lost its first-round state summer baseball playoff game, coach George Ushela couldn’t remember the last time that happened.

Ushela puts more emphasis on the summer than most coaches and the Lions have paid that back with plenty of success. Last year, the Lions made it to the summer state final and the year before they won the title.

That’s what made the 4-0 loss to Montini on July 15 so shocking. LT entered as the top seed in the 16-team Fenwick regional and had lost just four times in the summer.

While fighting absences from travel ball and showcases, Ushela got to see a number of different players who will make up most of the varsity team next spring. Key contributors from the spring Charlie Harrigan, Thomas Hickey and Jack Oremus will be the core

of next year’s team.

Hickey only pitched once for LT in the summer while also pitching for travel ball.

“We had a lot of guys missing over the summer,” Ushela said. “It was a tough year for evaluating. It’s going to be competitive for spots next year.”

Harrigan went back and forth between wood and metal bats during the summer. The Lions play with metal, but his travel team plays with wood bats frequently.

“The competition is a little bit better in travel,” Harrigan said. “It’s not that big [a differ-

ence]. The biggest difference is wood to metal. At first, it’s frustrating, but then you get the hang of it. It’s pretty much the same. The ball doesn’t go as far obviously, but once you get the hang of it it’s kind of the same.”

The outfielder has some college interest. After a busy summer, Harrigan and the Lions will get a break from the diamond.

“It’s a lot of baseball, so it’s good to get a little break from it,” Harrigan said. “It was a rough summer for our team.

We couldn’t really hit at all.”

Naz baseball builds momentum in summer season

That shows how much success Nazareth has had in the summer state playoffs in recent years. The Roadrunners made another run this year, getting all the way to the state final eight.

Brandon Bossard started in a 4-3 win against Glenbrook North on Monday at North Central College in a summer state quarterfinal. Chris Campagna had the game-winning single in the top of the eighth and Matt Wilson got out of some trouble to shut the door in the bottom half of the final inning.

In the spring, Tim DalPorto, set to play for Kent State, played shortstop but the spot now is open for Bossard.

The junior will be among the most experienced players on what figures to be another talented Nazareth squad next season. During the summer, he has been playing mostly travel ball, but has been playing with the Roadrunners when possible.

“A lot of travel for me,” Bossard said. “My travel team goes to a bunch of different tournaments, but I come to a lot of summer ball games. I just want to do my share for the team and try to get us far as we can.”

Nazareth entered Monday’s game without a handful of play-

ers due to a football camp going on at Illinois Wesleyan University at the same time. The Roadrunners picked up the first win despite the absence of some key starters among that group.

“The fact that our subs came in and did all this is a good sign,” Bossard said. “We take a lot of pride in our summer ball.”

In addition to a schedule that included area teams, Nazareth played in the Suburban Chicago Connie Mack Baseball League, a wood bat league comprised of teams from the north suburbs along with the Roadrunners. New Trier coach Mike Napoleon had a hand in creating the league, which also includes summer state opponent Glenbrook North. Nazareth took third out of eight teams in that league.

LEGAL NOTICE / PUBLIC NOTICE ORDINANCE NO. 2014-2 AN ORDINANCE ADOPTING PREVAILING WAGE RATES TO BE PAID TO LABORERS, MECHANICS AND OTHER WORKERS PERFORMING CONSTRUCTION OF PUBLIC WORKS IN THE BROADVIEW PARK DISTRICT COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS WHEREAS, the State of Illinois has enacted the Prevailing Wage Act, approved June 26, 1941, as amended, being 820 ILCS 130/0.01 through 130/12 (the "Act"); and WHEREAS, the Act requires that during the month of June of each calendar year the Board of Commissioners of the Broadview Park District ("Park District") investigate and ascertain the prevailing rate of wages, as defined in said Act, in the "locality" of the Park District for laborers, mechanics and other workers performing construction of public works for the Park District.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF THE BROADVIEW PARK DISTRICT, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS, as follows: Section 1: To the extent and as required by the Act, the general prevailing rate of wages in this locality for laborers, mechanics and other workers engaged in the construction of public works coming under the jurisdiction of the Park District is hereby ascertained to be the same as the prevailing rate of wages for construction work in Cook County as determined by the Department of Labor of the State of Illinois (the "Department") as of June 1, 2014, a copy of that determination being attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference. As required by said Act, any and all revisions of the prevailing rate of wages by the Department shall supersede the Department's June determination and apply to any and all public works construction undertaken by the Park District. The definition of any terms appearing in this Ordinance which are also used in the Act shall be the same as in the Act. Section 2: Nothing herein contained is intended to apply nor shall be construed to apply said prevailing rate of wages as herein ascertained to any work or employment performed on behalf of this Park District except public works construction to the extent required by the Act. Section 3: If any section, paragraph, clause or provision of this Ordinance shall be held invalid, the invalidity thereof shall not affect any of the other provisions of this Ordinance.

Section 4: All Ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict.

Section 5: The Secretary shall publicly post or keep available for inspection by any interested party in the main office of this Park District this determination of prevailing rate of wages. A copy of this determination or of the current revised determination of prevailing rate of wages then in effect shall be attached to all contract specifications.

Section 6: By July 15th, the Secretary shall file a certified copy of this Ordinance with the Secretary of State of Illinois in Springfield and with the Illinois Department of Labor.

Section 7: Within thirty (30) days after filing a certified copy of this Ordinance with the Secretary of State, the Secretary shall cause to be published in a newspaper of general circulation within the area a notice that this determination is effective and constitutes the determination of this public body.

Section 8: The Secretary shall mail a copy of this Ordinance to any employer, and to any association of employers and to any person or association of employees who have filed their names and addresses, requesting copies of any determination stating the particular rates and the particular class of workers whose wages will be affected by such rates.
