LA GRANGE – Following an appointment from the village board July 13, Renee Strasser was named chief of police for La Grange. Strasser effectively has filled the role of interim police chief since the retirement of Mike Holub in December 2014. Chief Strasser recently took some time to talk with Suburban Life reporter David Lanzafame about her new role. Lanzafame: As the first woman to serve as police chief for La Grange, what are your thoughts on being part of a historic moment for the village? Strasser: I am proud to be a member of the burgeoning ranks of female police chiefs. I anticipate a time, [in the] not so distant future, when gender will no longer be an issue. I look at it more from the perspective of being the next chief entrusted with the development of the next generation of La Grange’s finest. Lanzafame: You’ve served as acting police chief since January. What’s changed now that the village has dropped the word ‘acting?’

La Grange begins trial run Plan Commission discusses allowing microbreweries for free downtown valet By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE – Weekend patrons of downtown La Grange will receive a little extra convenience when shopping and dining this summer by taking advantage of free valet parking. On July 17, the village of La Grange began a trial run to offer free valet parking in La Grange’s downtown shopping district. According to a letter sent from the village of La Grange to local businesses owners, part of the proceeds from a voter-approved non-home rule sales tax increase are being used to fund the free valet service. In the letter, Village Manager Robert Pilipiszyn said the village would hire Accurate Valet to perform the valet parking on the village’s behalf. The free valet service will be available from 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Village Finance Director Lou Cipparrone said the valet service would cost $40,000 to run on weekends all year and draws from the $50,000 allocated

“As a restaurant owner in a busy town on a weekend, you want to make sure your seats are occupied. We just tell [our customers] to use the free valet. It’s probably one of the best things the village has done at peak times.” Vikram Singh Kama Bistro owner

from the sales tax revenue toward economic development. However, until voted on by the village board, the trial run for the free valet service is expected to run until the end of the summer. “[There’s] no hard stop on it,” Cipparrone said. “I think the trial is going to go through the remainder of the

By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE – At the July 14 La Grange Plan Commission workshop meeting, commissioners signaled their support for allowing a greater variety of businesses that sell alcohol to open and operate in the village. Among the commission’s discussed changes to the village’s liquor ordinances would be an allowance for microbreweries and distilleries in La Grange’s industrial districts and brew pubs and specialty wine and beer stores in the village’s commercial districts. The recommendations are not without their limits. A microbrewery or distillery would be allowed to operate only in La Grange’s light industrial district, not the village’s downtown. A microbrewery, as discussed by the commission, primarily would manufacture spirits or beer but also would be allowed to operate a tasting room to sell its products to the public if it got a liquor license from the village.

“They are manufacturing facilities,” Village Attorney Mark Burkland said. “But they do have tasting rooms. They are manufacturers, not a retail store.” The areas in which they could operate would be limited. The opening of a microbrewery or distillery would be restricted to Shawmut Avenue behind Gordon Park and along the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad on La Grange’s east side. According to Burkland, the village has received inquiries into craft alcohol production and sales, but no official offers have been made. A brew pub would be allowed to open in the village’s commercial districts, such as downtown La Grange. As discussed by the plan commission, a brew pub would be a full-service restaurant that sells its own brand of beer, which could be created at the restaurant’s location. Currently, a business in La Grange that sells alcohol for on-site consumption is required to make 60 percent

National Night Out set Aug. 4 Anderson’s Bookshop By DAVID LANZAFAME dlanzafame@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE PARK – In honor of the annual National Night Out event for 2015, the La Grange Park Police Department, along with the La Grange Park Fire Department, will host a festival at Memorial Park. The festival will begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 4. The free event will include food, entertainment and child

safety seat inspections. “It’s a meet and greet between police, fire and the community,” Police Sgt. Felix Hernandez said. “We feel that if the residents know each other, they’ll help each other out more.” The National Night Out is a nationwide campaign established in 1984 to help bring attention to the community outreach programs offered by local police departments, such as drug prevention

and town and neighborhood watches. The National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, a nonprofit crime prevention organization that operates in the United States and Canada. In recognition of the crime prevention programs, the National Association of Town Watch traditionally asks that residents turn their porch lights on from 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 4.

Dear Pet Talk: I'm pretty sure my dog has allergies. How do I know for sure? Allergies in pets can be very frustrating for pet owners and very uncomfortable for pets. Besides the obvious discomfort from itching, allergies lead to other problems such as hair loss, skin infections and hot spots, ear infections, vomiting, and soft stools. While medications may be helpful in controlling or minimizing allergy issues, often they are not enough, leading to repeat visits to the vet to treat secondary problems, like skin infections, especially during the worst times of the allergy season. Allergies can be caused by a variety of sources, just as in people. Foods, pollens, dust, mites, fleas, and molds can all contribute to allergies. Identifying the cause by trial and error can be frustrating. Prescription diets are costly and you may not know if they are helping for 2 to 3 months. Environmental allergies are even more frustrating, since there is no way to avoid them without moving out of state! And it only takes a few unseen fleas to make your pet miserable. however, can help owners get a handle on their pet's allergies. A blood sample is taken and submitted for testing. By measuring antibodies to food ingredients, trees, grasses, pollens, molds, weeds, insects, fleas, and house mites, we can discover exactly what things your pet is allergic to. In the case of foods, the testing laboratory runs the ingredients the pet is sensitive to through a database to produce a list of foods (dry and canned), treats, and even medications that are "safe" for the pet to eat. For environmental allergies, allergy vaccines (either as an oral treatment or as a shot) can be used to desensitize the pet and offer relief from the itching, discomfort, and help prevent secondary medical problems long term. If you have a pet that is suffering from allergies, please call to set up an appointment and see if allergy testing can help your pet. already have with the members of our community is paramount in my role as police chief. I hope to empower police personnel to find new and innovative ways to collaborate with community members in order to resolve qualityof-life issues. Just as important are my responsibilities in assuring that the next generation of La Grange’s finest are consummate professionals by focusing on organizational development at both the patrol officer and supervisory level. Lanzafame: What do you like about working in law enforcement? Strasser: I believe most officers will tell you they were drawn to the law enforcement profession because it is exciting and challenging. Although that is all true, for me it simply comes down to taking pleasure in helping others. Lanzafame: Do you ever miss being in a cruiser on patrol? Strasser: I have fond memories of my days serving as a police officer and miss the day-to-day contact with the community. I understand what the department’s young officers are going through and I am better able to provide them with the necessary support and encouragement from having performed the same tasks.

Circulation is all about customer service The word “circulation” is defined in library science as “the processes connected with providing for the use of library materials, including reserve operations, recall, and record-keeping.” I must admit that by definition circulation sounds boring! But I can positively assure you that the circulation desk at the Westchester Library is anything but that. We prefer COMMUNITY to think of ourselves as the VOICE heart of the library, and Sophie circulation keeps that heart pumping. Hough Our primary function is, of course, customer service. We are the first people you see when entering and the last when you leave. We check your materials in and out, we add money to your printing accounts, we sign you up for a new library card, or renew your current one. We help you find materials, and if we don’t have what you need, we can get it for you. We solve your problems at the dreaded copy machine, and hopefully we do it all and then some with a smile. For me personally, the best part of working in circulation is not about what we can do for you, but rather what you as patrons do for us. In a small community such as ours, there are very few library strangers. We actually see many of you on a daily basis. You have allowed us to watch your children grow from story hour toddlers to active social young adults who congregate in the teen room. You share stories of your vacations and take us on journeys to faraway places enhanced by the knowledge you gained from books you borrowed to research your destination. You are the senior citizen who is excited to learn new technology and proudly show us the pictures of grandchildren you have saved on your smartphone. You are the resident “Roger Ebert” who gives us your critique on the DVDs you have rented. You invite us to share your joy when celebrating weddings and births, while also trusting us with seeing your vulnerable side when you are experiencing illness or loss. You are the lifelong learner who loves to read and could easily be on our side of the desk giving suggestions. (At the risk of jeopardizing my job security, some of my favorite reads have been patron recommended.). So if you haven’t been to see us for a while, we encourage you to stop in and we will be happy to bring you up to date on the changes happening every day. We know you won’t be disappointed and we would love to have you become part of the fuel that keeps the heart pumping!

Sophie Hough is circulation clerk of the Westchester Public Library.

SOUND OFF School system levies

Lovely tax season is upon us again. Just look at your property tax bill and see how huge the levies for the various school systems are in comparison to the rest of your bill. The school system levies outright dwarf the other assessments by a gigantic margin. Don’t anyone tell me that the teachers and school administrators aren’t living large, now and in retirement.

No money for bike paths

To the person who put in about extending the side of the road to make a bike path and asking “is it so hard to extend that road where able?” Yes, it’s hard, because there is no revenue for that. Your bicycle is not licensed, you are not paying any road taxes by purchasing gasoline. ... It all takes money.

About people walking their dogs without leashes. I’ve been seeing it more and more, and I’ve just got to ask, what gives with this? Not only is it illegal, but it’s also dangerous. It’s dangerous to the community and it’s dangerous to other dogs. It’s got to stop.

WWC Winner Chalupny Scores in Chicago’s 1-1 Tie with Boston

Visiting Breakers with strong performance against NWSL-leading Red Stars Lisle, Il. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars drew 1-1 with visiting Boston Breakers in the club’s official “Welcome Home, World Cup Stars” match on Saturday night. U.S. defender-midfielder and Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny scored the go-ahead goal in her first NWSL match since winning soccer’s most prestigious trophy, followed by an equalizer from Breakers forward Stephanie McCaffrey, both tallies coming after the break. Chicago honored all eight of their World Cup stars in front of a capacity crowd and saw four of them take the field for the first time since rejoining the team, Chalupny and Canada veteran Karina LeBlanc both registering starts while American legend Shannon Boxx and Canucks forward Adriana Leon entered in the second half. New Zealand captain Abby Erceg put in another strong performance anchoring the backline for the Red Stars. In a relatively uneventful opening half, Chicago forward Jen Hoy had the first dangerous look in the 9th minute of play, her low drive from the left side of the box whistling wide of the right post. Strike partner Sofia Huerta came even closer to finding the net twelve minutes later, as she aimed for the same post from a similar position, cutting to her right and producing a powerful drive that whizzed just over the frame guarded by World Cup winner Alyssa Naeher. The visiting Breakers had a chance to score in the 42nd minute. LeBlanc came far off her line to punch out a long ball into the attack, which subsequently fell to the feet of Katie Schoepfer, whose long-distance effort forced the Red Stars netminder to leave

her feet for a quality parry to her right. The home side got on the board nine minutes after the break, defender Taryn Hemmings earning the assist against her former team by getting past an opposition player on the right and taking the ball to the byline before centering to Chalupny for a simple finish into the open net. The lead would be short-lived, as McCaffrey equalized just after the hour-mark. The striker, who was drafted by Chicago in the 2015 NWSL College Draft and subsequently traded to Boston, latched on to a through ball from the left sideline and calmly slotted past the onrushing LeBlanc and inside the right post to make it 1-1. McCaffrey nearly had another in the 65th minute, as she cut to her right inside the area and sent a curling effort toward the right post that was tipped wide by a diving LeBlanc. The Red Stars were unable to find a winner during the remainder of the match, as their opponents from Massachusetts displayed impressive tactical discipline to prevent any dangerous opportunities. The Chicago Red Stars look to return to their winning ways when they travel to take on Boston once again this coming Wednesday, July 22. The club’s next home match is a blockbuster clash with defending NWSL champions FC Kansas City that could feature a combined total of eight World Cup winners. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by calling 773-698-6001 or by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com.

of its revenue from food sales, which restricts bars from operating in the village. The meeting was only for discussion. Recommendations made will be drafted into an ordinance and presented to the plan commission for approval at a later meeting. If approved by the commission, the changes to the village’s ordinance would be sent to the village board for final consideration. John Janowski, a La Grange resident who recently organized a petition for La Grange to loosen its liquor laws to allow microbreweries, said he considered the discussion by the plan commission a victory.

13 NEWS |

Continued from page 4

As of July 15, Janowski’s petition had more than 380 signatures on the website www.change.org. “I’m excited,” Janowski said. “I’m very happy with what’s happened. I’ll celebrate with a beer tonight.” Janowski said he considers the commission’s discussion a step in the right direction. “It’s a start,” he said. “We made some progress. We’ve raised a lot of awareness in La Grange, so people might think about starting a brewery.” Janowski said he believes opening the village to microbreweries is important to keeping La Grange’s downtown competitive. Janowski said he also would like to see the village allow the opening of a business such as a wine or martini bar. Neither was discussed by the plan commission at the workshop meeting.

“This is a service we’ve offered in the past and we see as a need in the central business district,” Mesaros said. “It helps by freeing parking spaces on La Grange Road for customers. Customers coming into town know that they don’t have to look for parking.” Vikram Singh, owner and chef of Kama Bistro, 9 S. La Grange Road, welcomes the free valet parking. “I’m excited about it,” Singh said. “I think everyone knows that the parking situation in La Grange is a little tight. If parking is stopping you from coming here it might stop you [from shopping].

That doubt is not good for business, and if something removes that doubt it’s great.” For Singh, who used to pay for his own valet service, easy parking can mean filling more seats in his restaurant. “As a restaurant owner in a busy town on a weekend you want to make sure your seats are occupied,” Singh said. “We just tell [our customers] to use the free valet. It’s probably one of the best things the village has done at peak times. We’re contacting all our reservations and telling them about this.”

Nazareth battles despite squad’s depleted ranks By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com

“We had a lot of positives out of the summer and we’ll work toward next year.” Mark Busch - mbusch@shawmedia.com

Nazareth Academy’s John Zalewski delivers a pitch July 14 during a game against Addison Trail. The Roadrunners made it to a regional championship during the summer season.

RIVER FOREST – Next year, Nazareth baseball will play in Class 4A for the postseason, but the Roadrunners didn’t have to wait that long to get an early taste of what that competition will be like. During the Phil Lawler Classic summer postseason tournament, the Roadrunners took on three Class 4A teams before falling in the final of the Fenwick regional. Nazareth beat 4A schools Addison Trail and Glenbard East, along with 3A school St. Joseph, before losing against 4A spring semifinalist Oak Park-River Forest in the Fenwick regional final July 16. The Huskies topped Nazareth 7-1 a year after the Roadrunners made it all the way to the final of the summer tournament. “I give the guys credit that were here that we competed,” Nazareth coach Lee Milano said. “You throw basically four guys who have combined varsity experience of probably two innings and you’re playing against one of the top programs in the state [OPRF]. Our guys battled. They weren’t intimidated. They took their cuts.” The loss ended Nazareth’s summer. Despite being shorthanded because of travel ball and other sports competing for the players’ time, the Roadrunners still made a run.

“It’s always good to get some momentum toward the spring,” senior Kyle Kane said. “It was really tough going from highs then to lows and then going into the summer and starting all over again. We had a lot of positives out of the summer and we’ll work toward next year.” Milano is confident about next spring’s team. The Roadrunners were runners-up in Class 3A this spring and are expected to return seven starters from that team. Even with the move to 4A, Nazareth should remain among the favorites to get to state. “We play a tough schedule during the year, so whoever we face in the playoffs we will not be intimidated to play,” Milano said. “We have seven starters coming back and five of them were missing [against OPRF] so we have a good team coming back. I have high expectations for that team.” Nazareth’s summer also included play in the Suburban Chicago Connie Mack Baseball League, which the Roadrunners have been a part of since 2012. Milano said the team got off to a slow summer start, possibly because of an understandable lull after losing in the Class 3A final to end the spring, but the Roadrunners ended on a good run by making the final 16 of the Lawler Classic. Senior Chris Campagna, who pitched six scoreless innings in the 8-3 regional semifinal win against Glenbard East on July 15, said the summer is about improving more than winning. “It’s more laid-back really,” Campagna said. “There’s not as much pressure to get going. You can work on stuff. It’s learning time.”

Golden goal

Red Stars look to maintain momentum of World Cup win

By MATT LE CREN

Red Stars at home

editorial@mysuburbanlife.com LISLE – The United States returned to the pinnacle of women’s soccer by winning the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Vancouver earlier in July. It was a record third world title for the U.S. and first since 1999, and the response from the general public is an indication of how much the sport has grown in popularity and talent over the past 16 years. Four members of the Chicago Red Stars – forward Christen Press, midfielders Lori Chalupny and Shannon Boxx, and defender Julie Johnston – were on the U.S. team and all were amazed at the support. “Being my first World Cup it was absolutely unbelievable, and to win it, definitely I don’t think you can top that,” Johnston said. “I didn’t know what to expect in the sense of the fans. “In every single game it was absolutely remarkable to see how many U.S. fans were there, and when we came back to the States it was even greater.” The team was feted with a ticker-tape parade down the “Canyon of Heroes” in New York and won Team of the Year honors at ESPN’S ESPY awards. The fanfare stunned even the veteran Boxx, 38, who will retire at the end of the year. “I think the ticker-tape parade was pretty amazing,” Boxx said. “Not everybody is given the honor to do that. I’ve been around a long time and I think that’s one of the coolest events that I’ve ever been part of.” Boxx was a member of four World Cup teams and has seen the popularity rise over the years. “It has gotten so much better,” Boxx said. “You go back to 1991 [the first World Cup which the U.S. won in China]. Nobody was waiting for them at the airport. Then in 2011 we didn’t win but we got an amazing reception when we came back to the U.S. I think that’s when it started.” But will it continue? Boxx, Chalupny, Johnston and Press returned to Chicago on July 18 and a crowd of 3,560 – the first sellout in franchise

Chicago Red Stars player Vanessa DiBernardo kicks the ball downfield July 18 in a National Women’s Soccer League game against Boston. The Red Stars are hoping the momentum of the United States’ Women’s World Cup win this summer will lead to more recognition for the team and league. history – saw the Red Stars tie Boston 1-1 at Benedictine University to remain in sole possession of first place in the NWSL. “I think the challenge is to keep it going,” said Chalupny, 31, the captain who scored Chicago’s only goal against Boston. “World Cups only happen every four years and winning it definitely gave us a little bump in viewership and the amount of attention that has been given to the sport, but the great

thing is we have this league and we play every year and it’s in people’s hometowns. People can watch us play and that will continue the momentum.” Such bumps have happened before. The U.S. victory in the 1999 World Cup led to the establishment of the first domestic professional league. But three such leagues all folded after three seasons and the NWSL is now in its third season. Will this time be different?

“We’ve got to keep winning,” Red Stars owner Arnim Whisler said. “In a town like this with nine or 10 other pro sports teams, if we don’t win, we’re off the radar. “We’ve got the brand, we’ve got the talent and we’ve got people coming in the stadium who have never seen us before. We just have to thrill them when they come and they’ll usually come back. “That’s on us. That’s on ... marketing through the people

who have been in the stadium, better relations with the press in Chicago. We can convert that.” The Red Stars have plenty of marketable young stars in the 26-year-old Press and 2014 NWSL Rookie of the Year Johnston, 23, plus Under-23 National Team members Vanessa DiBernardo and Danielle Colaprico and 22-year-old leading scorer Sofia Huerta. “I think that it is an incredibly important moment for women’s soccer,” Press said. “The important thing is for the fans who have been so great for us and for the national team to continue to support us and come out to the NWSL games and see that there’s hundreds of women in this country that play great soccer. “It is something worth watching and I think if the fans continue to support us in our leagues, that is going to push women’s soccer in America forward at every level.” There is no doubt the Red Stars have high expectations. Chicago head coach Rory Dames called the atmosphere of the July 18 game “fantastic” but said the team didn’t play up to its caliber. “Regardless of why people are here, I would like us to play the way we’re capable of playing,” Dames said. “I think we have a lot of exciting players on the team outside of the national team players. Hopefully we can get some more fans in because they want to see some players and buy into the team and really start to enjoy what they see.”
