Everyone enjoys chiming in with the “Ooh, Ahh” chorus during a Fourth of July firework show, but it’s not always easy knowing where the shows will be or how to choose which to attend.

The Combined Veterans of Berwyn, including the Italian American War Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 256 and the Cicero-Berwyn Viet Now chapter, will perform flag raising ceremonies at a total of 13 locations throughout Berwyn beginning about 6 a.m. Fourth of July.

The group will begin at Morton West High School about 6 a.m. where they will perform a “Call to Colors” accompanied by the bugle and raise flags. A nine-gun rifle salute also will be given.

The ceremony will then be repeated at the Berwyn Public Library, Proksa Park, The Berwyn Recreation Department facility, the Berwyn Police Department, the Liberty Center, the Berwyn Health Department, Berwyn City Hall, Serenity Park, Mraz Park, Proksa Park, Berwyn Firehouse No. 2, the North Berwyn Park District facility, VFW Post 2378 and Commodore Barry American Legion Post, where the playing of “Taps” will conclude the event about 7:45 a.m.

Adventist La Grange La Grange bids farewell to fire chief Memorial Hospital nurses create book

LA GRANGE – For the 2014 Nurse Appreciation week this past May, nurses at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital turned their everyday patient encounters into a nearly 100-page-long book.

“Into the Heart of Healing” shares a collection of stories told by the hospital’s nursing staff, which are separated into eight chapters.

In creating the book, the idea was to convey how nursing impacts patient care and relates to nurse’s mission, according to Chief Nursing Officer Mary Murphy.

“Everybody is just so touched,” Murphy said. “[The book] really connects to our mission and reminds everybody of why we’re here, and how we make a difference to our patients.”

Murphy said the process of publishing the book took about three months, thanks to Pastoral Care Manager Aleksandra Tanurdzic, who’s responsible for the idea of creating such a book.

“I believe in stories, and until you share stories, it’s not personal,” Tanurdzic said. “Here, there are many stories and we tried to make

Once published, about 400 copies were passed out to nurses during nurse appreciation week, which ran May 5 through May 9. Now, the book is being sold online on Amazon and in the hospital’s book store.

John Rapp, regional vice president of ministry admissions at the hospital, said the book is not medically graphic but rather emotionally graphic.

“They’re all people stories,” Rapp said. “They’re just about moms and dads and human beings.

“It shows at the core that [health care] is about human compassion and how it can impact somebody’s experience in a hospital,” Murphy said.

Budds also received the Blue Brick Award, which is optional for participants. Recipients of the Blue Brick Award must swim a total of 34 miles throughout the program. The distance represents the distance it would take to swim from Quantico to Washington, D.C., via the Potomac River.

Budds described the experience as “world class” and said he will bring back the leadership skills he learned to his department.

“It’s definitely a life changer,” Budds said.

LA GRANGE – As the village honored Fire Chief Bill Bryzgalski on the recent announcement of his upcoming retirement, President Livingston described the chief as “one of the most beloved and respected members” of the village’s management team.

“He’s been solid, he’s been honest, he’s been responsive and he’s been the epitome of service,” Livingston said.

Chief Bryzgalski’s retirement – announced at Monday’s board meeting – will be effective as of July 11.

“I walked in the door July 2, 1984, and never regretted a day,” Bryzgalski said. “It’s the greatest job you can ever ask for.”

During the board meeting, trustee Bill Holder described Chief Bryzgalski as not only a professional but also the epitome of a leader.

LA GRANGE – Throughout the past year, housing sales in the La Grange area have decreased about 15.8 percent, according to data provided by the Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS. This percentage comes from the 16 homes sold in May 2014, compared to the 19 sold in May 2013 in a month to month comparison.

Realtor Catherine Dugan LaBelle with Baird and Warner said the low numbers are simply a result of mother nature, which hindered many businesses this year, not just the housing market.

“I don’t think the drop in sales is an indication of the market,” LaBelle said.

“I think it has to do with the weather.”

Of the 16 sold homes in May 2014, the average buyer paid about $493,031 versus the May 2013 buyers who paid on aver-

age $509,407, according to the Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS. With the statistics in mind, LaBelle said she doesn’t expect any further decreases.

“Our inventory is down and demand is still high,” LaBelle said. “I think the market will continue to be steady or improve as we go on this year, I don’t think it will drop off.”

Aside from La Grange, nearby neighborhoods are experiencing similar numbers or even standstills as well.

La Grange Park with 18 sold homes, Countryside with four and Hillside with 11 all sold the same number of homes in May 2014 as in May 2013.

With 23 homes sold in May 2014 – at an average of $218,802 per home – Westchester’s housing market is down 23.3 percent. In May 2013, 30 homes were sold in Westchester.

Village in search of new youth commissioners

The village of La Grange Park is in search of four new members for the 2014-2015 Youth Commission.

After four of the current commissioners graduated this year, the village is hoping to fill those open seats. The commission consists of 10 students between seventh and 12th grade. While serving a one or two year term – beginning in September of each year – the commissioners make recommendations to the village board at least once a month.

Local libraries begin streaming Hoopla Digital

LA GRANGE – Two area libraries are plunging into the digital era with Hoopla Digital; a new Netflix-styled program.

At the La Grange and Riverside libraries, library card holders will have free online and mobile access to movies, music, TV shows, eBooks and more through the program.

Hoopla Digital owner and founder Jeff Jankowski said the program eliminates late fees along with waiting times.

“It really empowers the library users to find the content they want,” Jankowski said.

Although the system runs similarly to a Netflix program, 80 percent of its content is not available on Netflix, according to Jankowski. He said, along with it’s unique content, Hoopla also is appealing because it can be downloaded and used in different locations. “[It] gives libraries a tool to stay relevant in the digital age,” Jankowski said. “It’s a very simple concept, but it’s revolutionary.”

The La Grange Public Library, 10 W. Cossitt Ave., launched Hoopla for its patrons in March. Since introducing the program, the library has had about 68 movies viewed per month, according to Library Director Jeannie Dilger.

Hoopla allows the library to set the limits, so each TV show or movie can be viewed for three days, Dilger said.

“It’s no different than offering DVDs, but people can watch them on any type of device 24-7.” Dilger said. “And there’s not a wait time, so it just offers them a wider range than the physical copies that we buy.”

In the past three months, Dilger said the response to Hoopla has been great and the system is easy to use.

Echoing Dilger, Riverside Public Library Director Janice Foley said the program has had a good turnout with more than 120 patrons registered for the program.

The Riverside library, which started the program in May, also will offer information sessions to show patrons how Hoopla works later this summer.

The decision to implement Hoopla at the library came about after seeing a preview of how easy it is to use, according to Foley. She said some patrons are hesitant about the program, but she’s hopeful they’ll give it a try.

“Once they try it, they’re going to love it,” Foley said. “I think they don’t realize it’s as simple as we say it is.”

At 11:49 a.m. June 24, the Countryside Police Department responded to a roll over crash at 55th Street and East Avenue in the southbound lane, according to a news release. A semitrailer dump truck carrying clay was headed west on 55th Street when it attempted to make a left turn onto East Avenue and rolled over onto its side. As the truck rolled, a large amount of its content was dumped onto the parkway, police said. The driver of the truck was injured and transported to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. The extent of the driver’s injuries were unknown, but did not appear to be life threatening, police said.

With assistance from public works and McCook police officers, the street was opened within an hour and a half of the crash.

In presidentially declared disaster areas, the rules are more liberal. Current losses can be deducted immediately against past returns, as amended, for earlier refunds.

The very first library in the United States As we draw closer to the 238th birthday of the United States, I started wondering about the very first library in our great nation. Quite often, towns and cities across the land have pictures and documents declaring their own first library was in Jane Doe’s basement and slowly flourished into a beautiful, state-ofthe-art, 50,000-square-foot facility. But what about the very first library in our new nation? Well, my research tells us there is no simple and definitive answer to my question. According to the Boston Public Library’s website, everything seems to have begun with them.

“In addition to being the COMMUNITY first publicly supported free VOICE municipal library in the Dan world, the Boston Public Powers Library [established in 1848] has many other distinctions, such as the first public library to lend a book, the first to have a branch library and the first to have a children’s room.”

Oh, well, I guess that solves our riddle. But wait, the plot thickens. The Library Company of Philadelphia (LCP) came about by way of a discussion group in colonial Philadelphia gravitating around Benjamin Franklin. On July 1, 1731, Franklin and his group drew up articles of agreement to found a library because they had discovered their conversations on intellectual and political themes became argumentative at times on points of interest which might be easily resolved with books found in a decent library. In colonial Pennsylvania, at the time, there were not many books, and books from London booksellers were expensive to purchase and slow to arrive. Franklin and his friends were mostly of moderate means, and none alone could have afforded his own personal library. By pooling their resources, they could. The articles of association specified each member sign the articles and pay a subscription fee.

So, the Library Company of Philadelphia may have been an earlier established library than the Boston Public library, but the LCP was for members only, and fees were charged, as well.

But what about this: British-born Charlestown, Mass., resident and clergyman, John Harvard, upon his death in 1638, donated his entire 400-book library and half his estate to a new university, which eventually honored him by adopting his name. This, then, was an even earlier established library; however, it came from a private collection, and its use was limited to members of a college.

While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact first library in the New World, this research defines how important and meaningful libraries have always been and always will be to Americans.

CHARLES B. BRUGGEN Charles B, Bruggen, age 89, formerly of Riverside, passed away in Fairfax, Virginia on June 20, 2014 following a long struggle with Alzheimer's and heart disease.

He lived the majority of his life in the Chicago area, and enjoyed spending his summers on Big Sand Lake in Park Rapids, Minnesota.

Chuck proudly served as a US Marine Corps officer and combat engineer during the Korean War. A graduate of the University of Illinois, he earned a masters degree in civil engineering from Purdue University, and spent his professional career working for Anning-Johnson company in Chicago, involved in many major construction projects, including the John Hancock building and the Sears Tower. He retired as the Senior Vice President of AnningJohnson after 38 years. He was committed to the Riverside community, as he served on the local school boards for many years.

Chuck was a devoted family man, a loving brother, husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending his summers in Minnesota on Big Sand Lake, cheering on the Chicago Cubs, watching golf, and enjoying time with his family and his brothers' families.

He is preceded in death by Shirley, his wife of 58 years; and his daughter, Lynne.

He is survived by his daughter, Adrienne, her husband, Robert and his two grandchildren, Kevin and Hillary.

STEPHEN M. TUREK Stephen Michael Turek, age 28, of Saline, Michigan, passed away suddenly June 24, 2014 at the University of Michigan Hospital.

He was born and raised in LaGrange, then moved with his parents to Ann Arbor in 2006 for post high school education.

Stephen enjoyed playing “yellow C” in the Common Chords hand chime choir, attending the friendship group at Christian Reformed Church, and bowling with the Saturday morning Challengers.

He was a confirmed and devoted member of Saint Thomas Catholic Church in Ann Arbor. He loved to carry the crucifix into mass and stay until the last note of music was played. Stephen's love of music was wide ranging. He enjoyed attending live music events including Easy Street jazz, U of M marching band practice, the RFD Boys and Handel's Messiah at the Hill. He loved playing his own instruments; Tuba, electric Bass and Didgeridoo. He was unashamed of his joy of living and showed his infectious broad smile and two thumbs up at Church, Concerts, school meetings and grocery shopping. He shared his love with everyone he met.

He is survived by his parents, James and Diane (Eagelston) Turek; his two sisters and their spouses, Victoria Turek and Clayton Beach, and Karen (Turek) and Matt Marvich; his four brothers and their spouses, Paul Turek and Jennifer Ulman, Mark (Turek) and Alice Tsujihara, Daniel Turek and John Turek; and seven nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his grandfather Anton Turek, his uncle John (Rosa) Turek, Aunt Mary (Michael) Silver, Aunt Karen (Oliver) Younggren, and Uncle Robert Eagelston, and many cousins.

Cooper’s Corner stakes claim on big flavor WINFIELD – When friends recommended Cooper’s Corner, we decided to pay a visit to the restaurant that opened earlier this year in the spot that once housed the venerable Viking.

We walked in on a Friday night to the sound of live music and were offered a choice of seating in the expansive lounge near the band or one of the dining rooms. We opted for the dining room closest to the bar for a happy medium.

The space is updated, yet preserves classic old-school steakhouse charm with large booths, banquettes, tables with comfy chairs and lots of elbow room.

And while the chef puts plenty of emphasis on roast beef, steak and other red meat dishes, there’s a healthy accent on seafood, pastas, freshly prepared crab cakes, sandwiches and other options that make the decision of what to order pleasurably conflicted.

We opted to try the stuffed sesame portabella appetizer, which complemented the meaty mushroom with goat cheese, caramelized onion, and roasted red pepper that popped.

“It’s an interesting blend of flavors and textures,” raved my date.

We each chose soup over salad: a creamy clam chowder and a baked onion. The latter was good, but a tad salty.

My selection of an entree became easy when I spotted the slow-roasted prime rib featured at the top of the menu, and chose the smallest of the three portion choices. It arrived rare per my request, and was sublimely tender and juicy. Its side dish was a superb mix of sauteed zucchini, broccoli, carrot, squash and onion cooked al dente.

My companion chose one of the evening’s specials: the baked berry Florentine stuffed pork loin. The fruit topping made it a memorable dish. A massive portion, we enjoyed it for lunch the next day.

Among many temptations, I look forward to trying the other dish I’d considered: pork short ribs with barbecue sauce, and a smoky hint of chipotle peppers.

The restaurant, open for lunch and dinner, features daily early-bird enticements, and highlights salads prepared with locally sourced produce.

We did not leave enough room for one of the homemade desserts suggested by a friend, whose comment about the grilled shrimp entree she enjoyed on a previous visit was an enthusiastic “Yummy.”

Cooper’s Corner, with its large parking lot, is easy to find on Roosevelt Road on the border between Winfield and

Wheaton, and well worth a trip for a relaxing experience, deliciously fresh ingredients, friendly service and the added option of hitting the dance floor Fridays and Saturdays.

The weekend acts range from blues and R&B to jazz and Rat Pack favorites.

Focus on football

As teams enter into summer practices and 7-on-7 tournaments, players like Reggie Terrell Jr. get to show their talents against varsity athletes for the first time.

The Lyons Township sophomore moved up to the varsity team when the Lions went to Notre Dame for a 7-on-7 tournament in June and already is impressing LT’s coaching staff.

“They took me to check me out and I did pretty good there, so after that 7-on-7 they told me I would be on varsity,” Terrell

While LT has been competing in 7-on-7 competitions, Riverside Brookfield has been hosting summer practices on its own four days a week and will compete July 12 at the Willowbrook 7-on-7.

The Bulldogs aren’t traveling around the area as much to find external competition, but the biggest news out of RB this summer is offensive lineman Louis Grigoletti committed to

As for other area teams, Morton started summer camp June 11 and has practices scheduled through July 24.

Nazareth started its summer camp schedule June 21 and will host its own 7-on-7 event in mid-July.

Terrell and the Lions also competed in the 32-team Red Grange Classic hosted by Wheaton Warrenville South.

LT got off to a rocky start in pool play Thursday, dropping all five of the 21-minute games against quality opposition before dropping both games in Friday’s double elimination bracket.

However, wins and losses isn’t the point of summer foot-

ball. Coaches are just trying to discover what kind of personnel they have.

“We got two weeks under our belt, so the [Red Grange Classic] is kind of our second big 7-on-7,” LT coach Kurt Weinberg said. “We’re just trying to build our team like everybody else. We’re trying to compete and win.”

While the skill players are competing in the 7-on-7, the linemen are having their own competitions. The Red Grange Classic provided a linemen challenge to get everyone on the team involved, perhaps other than kickers and punters.

Further ahead on LT’s schedule is the West Suburban Conference 7-on-7 tournament, which will be July 10.

The Lions have quarterback Tommy Fiedler and run-

ning back Leonard Ross back, although running plays aren’t allowed in 7-on-7. Terrell, a defensive back, played on the freshmen team this past year and is hoping to be another talented contributor.

“It’s very tough because I’m used to sophomore speed,” Terrell said. “Varsity is sped up. I got to push and it’s kind of hard, but I think I can get there.”

Getting used to the speed of varsity athletes isn’t the only adjustment. The difference in style of 7-on-7 games is another thing Terrell is getting used to this summer.

“I think it’s way faster than a real game because there’s not that many guys, everyone is moving fast,” Terrell said.

“It’s right off the bat plays, no huddles, it moves very fast.”

Retirement life ‘is perfect’ for former Bull

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen endure as all-time great players for the Chicago Bulls.

However, Toni Kukoc earned his own spot in Bulls’ lore in 1994 when he hit a buzzer-beater to defeat the New York Knicks in a playoff game.

That was near the end of the his rookie season, after which he went on to play in Chicago until the 1999-2000 season.

Kukoc officially retired from professional basketball in 2006, but he was back on the court this past week hosting and coaching a camp at the Bulls/Sox Academy in Lisle.

He took time from working with camp participants to speak with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about the camp, his retirement, his native Croatia’s involvement in the World Cup, and his famous last-second shot.

little golf and watching basketball. That’s pretty much it.

Life is perfect. I became like a golf addict, so as long as the weather is nice I can go and golf.

Rossi: What are your thoughts on the camp?

Kukoc: It’s a fun time for the kids. We’re trying to work on fundamentals of the game and teaching them to play the right way and have fun while doing it.

Rossi: What’s the biggest fundamental you try and get across to the kids?

Kukoc: There’s a theme [to

the camp] and it’s listening.

Just listening to the coaches and trying to put all that we say back onto the court.

It’s easy to forget after five minutes what the coach said and just do it the easy way or do it your own way, but we’re trying to get them to listen to the little details we put in their ears and get them to put it back on the court.

Rossi: What was it like playing for the Bulls when they were at their peak?

Kukoc: I don’t want to say it was easy; it was hard, but at the same time it was a lot of fun just for the fact that the expectations were high and the ultimate goal of winning a championship was the only goal. Everything else was a failure. It was a high standard, but it wasn’t something where the goal was put so high that it wasn’t reachable.

So we came to the first day of camp with the idea that if we played together and put our minds in the same place that our goal was achievable,

and it was, three times.

Rossi: What do you miss most about playing?

Kukoc: The competitive nature of it that we all had.

In golf, the U.S. Open or the World Cup in soccer, you see how much the guys want it, how much they grind for it, how much the fans are into it and that’s when that competitive spirit of mine shows up and boils inside of me again.

Then reality hits you, and when I try to overdo it, the body says “No, I don’t really think so.” It brings you back to Earth, but that’s the part you miss the most. The games you won by 20 or 30 you don’t remember, but those last-second shots or the last-second defensive stops, those are the ones you remember and the ones people remind you about.

Rossi: Is that last-second shot against the Knicks your career highlight? Or is there something else you think back on?

Kukoc: I hit more than a couple [shots like that], but

I’d say championships are more the measurement of your success as a basketball player. So all the championships, with all the stuff I did in Europe at first and then in the United States, are kind of the highlights.

The individual stuff is always there, but it doesn’t mean as much if nothing happens team-wise. The shots you hit are great, but championships are what measures somebody’s success.

Rossi: Have you been watching much of the World Cup? Kukoc: I’ve watched a lot of it. I watched Croatia, that’s my team. I watched the United States because that’s my team, too. Obviously I’m happy the States advanced and a little disappointed Croatia didn’t.

Rossi: Do you ever get together with your former teammates and play some basketball?

Kukoc: No, but every once in a while we play golf and we enjoy the competitive nature that way.
