ing the same pill, but Brady is a part of the remaining 10 percent without a timeline, according to Matt O’Connell. “[The funds] we get go towards research to hopefully accelerate that timeline,” he said.

Organizing the St. Patrick’s Day-themed event began last July, according to Kellene O’Connell. Kellene and a group of 20 close friends work on the committee together.

After a mini winter break, the group resumed work in January and is now about two weeks away from the event – which would not be possible without family, friends and the community, said Kellene O’Connell.

While raising money for the foundation is important, Kellene O’Connell said they just want to tell their story and create awareness of the disease.

“There’s hope and that’s what is so exciting about it,” Kellene O’Connell said. “We have to wait the longest, but we just want everyone to know we’re not going to stop until every kid is cured. That’s our motivation.”

LA GRANGE – What started out as a post 5k family and friends get-together at a bar, has evolved into a fundraising event benefiting a local 4-yearold and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“It all grew very organically in the beginning,” said Matt O’Connell, who organizes and runs the event with wife, Kellene.

He said that even as the March fundraiser has grown in recent years, it still has the “grass roots” feeling.

“We’re just focused on getting as many people in the room, telling our story and showcasing all the great things the organization does,” he said.

Shamrockin’ For A Cure will be an evening event highlighting the couple’s son, Brady, and cystic fibrosis research.

Until this past month, Brady went a year and a half without being hospitalized or on any antibiotics, according to Matt O’Connell. But he said since returning home from a five-day hospital stay in February, Brady has six IV treatments a day along with four vest treatments, where a vibrating vest helps remove fluid in Brady’s lungs.

“We’re looking forward to getting on another stretch [without hospital visits],” the La Grange resident said, adding that even without having to be in the hospital, Brady still will be on about three vest treatments a day.

Along with sharing their story, Shamrockin’ For A Cure also is about representing the CF Foundation’s work.

In 2012, a drug called Kalydeco was approved and is now being used to alleviate symptoms of CF for 4 percent of CF patients in the United States. By 2020, about 90 percent of CF patients will be us-

‘iDig’ premieres at La Grange Theatre Learn more

LA GRANGE – The men behind the La Grange-based video marketing firm, Motion Source, best known around town as the studio that created a Chevrolet commercial that aired during the 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star game and prominently featured Harder’s Service Station, premiered their new short film, “iDig,” at the La Grange Theatre Feb. 19.

The 25-minute short follows a down-on-his-luck man named Doug who hatches a plan to dig up a time capsule buried in 1976 and contains the first Apple computer, the Apple 1, which has sold at auction for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Doug enlists a former school friend to help, who in turn recruits a former class bully, and the three head to a fictional Pleasantdale Middle School to dig the computer

Written by Motion Source owner and Brookfield resident Jon Scaletta, the film was conceived on a flight home from a job in Finland as Scaletta read

Steve Job’s autobiography and learned an Apple 1 had sold at auction for $375,000.

Aided by his business partner, Craig Bass, and the Motion Source crew, the film began shooting in December 2012.

The film will be submitted to numerous film festivals this year, according to the creators.

“This was a huge learning project too,” Scaletta said.

The two hope to take that education – which included how difficult it is to actually dig a 6-foot-deep hole – and apply it to more short films down the road, perhaps eventually leading to a full-length feature at some point.

While the film is not available for the public, those interested will hopefully get a chance to screen it at film festivals in Naperville and Elgin this year.

While both Scaletta and Bass have plans for more movies down the line, both

are focused on “iDig” for now, as well as moving their business to a new home on Grand Avenue in Brookfield.

Motion Source’s new location will feature a massive studio space connected to their office, only increasing the potential for interesting work down the line.

Like the firm’s Chevy commercial, which featured a local cast and location, “iDig” similarly drew on area talent and locations like Now Serving and the Jackson Street Antique Mall. According to Scaletta and Bass, they’re always on the hunt for talented locals and those who have a location or prop they can use.

“If people want to support the arts, let us shoot in their home,” Bass said.

Legacy Guild to have spring fundraiser SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

LeaderShop hosts Pirate Party SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LA GRANGE – A La Grangebased organization that serves the Lyons Township community is planning to spread the wealth with other charities after its annual fundraiser in March.

The LeaderShop, which has been in town for more than 35 years, will donate 25 percent of the money raised by volunteers at its 2014 Pirate Party to other local and national charities – chosen by participating community and school leaders.

Some of the benefiting charities include Aging Care Connections, Heritage Middle School, Highlands Middle School, Illinois Chapter Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Willow Springs School, Autism Society of Illinois, Interfaith Community Partners and BEDS Plus.

The 2014 Pirate Party – a two-part event – will be held March 7 at the Brookfield Zoo’s Discovery Center. Buccaneer Blast at the Brig, a free community and family event, will kick off the fundraiser at 3 p.m. with face painting, games, a magician and a live swordplay demonstration by the Chicago Swordplay Guild.

Following the family event, guests who are at least 21 are invited to the Swashbuckler Soiree from 6 to 10 p.m. Along with auctions, raffles, cocktails and h’dourves, the fundraiser’s second portion will also include a presentation of the Community Impact Award.

This year’s award will recognize the First National Bank of La Grange for its continuous service in the community.

Tickets for the Swashbuckler Soiree are $75 per person.

LA GRANGE – The Legacy Guild, a La Grange-based nonprofit that supplies college scholarships to students in Lyons Township who have lost a parent, will host its spring event in March in Berwyn.

The night will kick off at 6:30 p.m. March 8 at FitzGerald’s Nightclub, 6615 Roosevelt Road, and will feature Libido Funk Circus, a well known Chicago dance band.

La Grange Highlands Middle School hosts 17 students and two adults Feb. 11 from the Collège Honoré de BALZAC, a middle school located in Neuilly-sur-Marne, France, just east of Paris. The French students were in Chicago as part of an artist-in-residence project. Highlands students who are studying French initially made contact with the students at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year to start an email exchange. The French students decided to make a trip to the school to visit their email pen pals at Highlands while in Chicago. The French students toured the school, had the opportunity to experience an American school classroom, were entertained by the Highlands show choir and were treated to a lunch of traditional American food including hot dogs, pizza, macaroni and cheese, Jello and popcorn.

An end in sight for the O’Laughlin case?

The wait isn’t over, but the end might be in sight.

Kelli O’Laughlin, a 14-year-old from Indian Head Park, was killed in the fall of 2011, stabbed multiple times. The brutal killing shocked the entire Chicago area and took a young girl from her family far too soon.

Nothing can put that right, but justice is the only solace remaining after such an act. Now, the man accused of her killing has a Kelli O’Laughlin date for trial: May 19.

Officials have described a number of pieces of evidence that they say tie John L. Wilson Jr. of Chicago to the crime.

They say Wilson was found with items stolen from the home when he was arrested.

They say DNA evidence was recovered from a knit cap used to break a window at the O’Laughlin family home on Keokuck Avenue.

And they say they have cellphone location data from both O’Laughlin and Wilson’s phones that track his whereabouts.

Every defendant is innocent until proven guilty, of course. No matter how much is known already, we can’t say we know the truth until both sides have had their say in court.

A Suburban Life story from Nov. 3, 2011, described the scene outside Kelli O’Laughlin’s visitation in Countryside: “Students dressed in all-black linked arms and huddled under umbrellas as they Photo provided walked the rain-drenched streets to say their goodbyes to their former classmate. The memorials and remembrances of Kelli haven’t stopped since then. Her family and friends are no doubt eager for a resolution to this story that can have no happy ending.

Here’s hoping that regardless of the result of the trial, they don’t have to wait too much longer for that resolution.

Tobolski celebrates ban on e-cigarettes to minors

Cook County Commissioner Jeff Tobolski, D-McCook, said he was proud of a vote today that unanimously passed an ordinance amendment prohibiting the sale of electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, from being sold to minors in

suburban Cook County.

“These e-cigarettes come in all sorts of flavors – bubblegum, cherry ... and they’re being placed near the candy,” Tobolski said after the vote.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat nicotine, additives and water into vapor, which are then inhaled by the user, similar to ciga-

rettes. The smokeless devices are marketed as smoking secession products, for the user’s ability to smoke indoors and as a healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes.

Tobolski said he became aware of a “loophole” that allowed the products to be sold to customers under the age of 18 by a friend in the Cook

County Department of Public Health. The amendment will pull e-cigarettes behind the counter with tobacco products and will require retailers to verify the age of a customer before allowing them to purchase the product.

The amendment will not change rules in unincorporated Cook County, according to Tobolski’s spokesman Kevin Fanning.

Tobolski, who has a middle school-age daughter, said he proposed the amendment out of concern that kids would begin smoking earlier because of perceptions that e-cigarettes are safer than cigarettes. A Los Angeles Times story published in January that examined the health effects of e-cigarettes largely found the products were still too new to the market to reveal definitive results. Most studies have found that impact of e-cigarette vapor on a person’s health is minimal, especially when compared to cigarettes.

Cook County commissioner said the amendment could be used as a starting place for further regulation of e-cigarettes, such as a ban on using them indoors, as the Chicago City Council recently passed.

“It’s all a low-level nicotine delivery system,” Tobolski said. “[The amendment] let’s us establish this as a place we can work from.”

Tobolski added that, regardless of the health effects and marketing, his main concern was that use of the products could lead kids to smoking regular cigarettes.

“Regardless of their marketing, this is a way to continue the addiction,” Tobolski said.

usy adults need to make the most of their time. Work and family commitments keep down time to a minimum, so taking on the additional load of a college student is a big decision. They need a program that makes the most of their time. Courses that are directly applicable to the career, and partnerships with students who take their college experience seriously, and have similar goals.

With that in mind, Northwood University’s DuPage campus in Glen Ellyn location offers an Adult Degree Program, which gives students the opportunity to pursue their education while maintaining the flexibility they need to balance family, work and school.

“Northwood offers evening, weekend or online formats, as well as innovative options like our ‘3+1’ degree program, which allows students the opportunity to complete three years of coursework at partnership institutions

like College of DuPage and Harper College, before completing their final year at Northwood University,” said Ann Marie Rosen, regional development manager.

The Northwood University student generally arrives with prior college credits from another university or community college. Many have been out of college for a while or took a break to focus on their career and family. They also have some students who are just beginning their university education.

The Glen Ellyn Adult Degree Program Center offers a variety of degrees in both hybrid (a blend of face-to-face and online) and completely online formats. Classes are designed in partnership with industry specialists and advisory boards and are taught by experts who are active in the business world.

Along with its Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management and Marketing, the Glen Ellyn campus also offers

seven fully online degree programs including aftermarket management, automotive marketing management, health care management, marketing, entrepreneurship, management and finance as well as an online Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership. Northwood students work with one advisor from application all the way to graduation, assisting them with registration, academic advising, financial aid and ordering books.

“With classes in eight-week and weekend formats, students can complete two or more courses in the same 16-weeks it takes traditional students to complete one class,” she says. Students also have the opportunity to earn credit for work and military experience.

One student earned 27 credits for her prior work experience, Rosen said. “This made a tremendous impact on the quality of her life by enabling her to complete her degree faster and with substantial savings on top of it.”

Shaw Media is the parent company of Suburban Life Media.

Bricker, who also serves as vice president of Shaw Media’s Suburban Group Publishing, will be based in The Herald-News office in Joliet.

Shaw Media recently purchased The Herald-News from Sun-Times Media. The Herald-News joins other Shaw Media publications including the St. Charles-based Kane County Chronicle, The Daily Chronicle in DeKalb, the Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake and Sauk Valley Media in Dixon/Sterling, as well as other weekly newspapers, magazines, niche products and websites.

Area pianist Lydia Sterba dies at 91

kpedicini@shawmedia.com After a lifetime of teaching piano and inspiring a love of music in her students, Lydia Smutny Sterba, 91, died Feb. 16.

The concert pianist originally moved to La Grange Park in 1948 with her husband, Edwin. She began teaching piano in the late 1930s and continued teaching through November 2013, according to her daughter Doreen Dezur.

While sharing her passion for the instrument, Sterba performed for many platforms as well, including Carnegie Hall, WTTW radio and WGN TV. She also played with multiple groups around the area, such as the West Suburban Symphony Orchestra, the Grant Park Symphony and the Chicago Chamber Orchestra.

Sterba, born and raised in Berwyn, attended the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago and studied under Earl Blair and Rudolph Ganz.

She leaves behind a son, Ronald Sterba, daughter Doreen Dezur, and nephews, Dan and Cory.

Get a homestyle meal at Bulldog Ale House CAROL STREAM – Sometimes you just want a homestyle meal, a plethora of beer options, and a classy atmosphere to possibly take in a game.

Bulldog Ale House takes the concept of a neighborhood sports pub and combines it with a full-service dining room. The bar area is partitioned off from the diners, meaning you can feel free to bring your family for dinner and not have to fret about any sports fans’ exuberance spoiling your meal.

On a recent visit, I opted for one of the few seats not in direct view of a TV, primarily because it was a slow night in the sporting world. That was a good thing, because it allowed me to focus on the food. My companion, not much of a sports fan, was indifferent to the televised display, but had a great time regardless.

Located in the Fountains at Town Center subdivision just off Lies Road in Carol Stream, Bulldog Ale House could, at first glance, be mistaken for a local version of an Applebee’s, but that’s not true at all.

There’s nothing kitschy about Bulldog, just a clean, nicely decorated and well-maintained eatery with a focus on food and beer.

Wanting to get a sense of what’s offered, we started out with the “super grande platter” of mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, chicken tenders and warm pretzels.

As mozzarella sticks were apparently in short supply that night, my dining companion was delighted at the chance to substitute mini corn dogs instead. Served with a variety of dipping sauces, it could easily serve as a meal for two all on its own.

We ordered entrees nonetheless, knowing we’d end up taking most of the meal home for leftovers – you can’t very well review a restaurant off a single appetizer. I selected the beef Stroganoff, a childhood favorite of mine that can be excellent when made well and terrible when not. In this case,

If I hadn’t been so full from the appetizer, I easily could have polished it off; instead, it made for a terrific lunch the next day.

My companion was similarly stuffed from the appetizer, and selected the pot

roast over the pot pie, reasoning that the pot pie likely wouldn’t reheat as well. The pot roast is cooked in a red ale gravy with carrots, red onions and celery, and served with garlic mashed potatoes. Not usually a fan of cooked carrots, my companion enjoyed every morsel, proclaiming the various flavors complemented each other perfectly.

the standard varieties you’d expect at any bar, and some more esoteric brands, such as Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, Half Acre Daisy Cutter and Shock Top Belgian White. If you enjoy a draft brew, there’s probably something here for you.

As you might’ve guessed, we didn’t have room for dessert, but would’ve been interested in the giant chocolate chip cookie (topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup) or

whipped cream and chocolate syrup). But then, who’s going to make it as far as dessert when the appetizer and meal portions are so tasty and generous? Maybe if we just split an entree …

“I just remember coming here and watching my sister compete and thinking how much I wanted to be on that podium one day, so it was kind of surreal to me,” Carling said. “It kind of was a surprise [to be second in the allaround]. I wasn’t focused at all on that on Friday. I just wanted to do what I knew how to do in the gym. It was a great feeling getting second.”

Michelle Cozza won a state title on bars, tying for first with a 9.5. Cozza, a senior, was also second on vault and coach Kari Karubas said it was the meet of her life. Cozza didn’t qualify for state all-around after a disappointing sectional meet. While competing in all four events for LT as part of the team competition, Cozza

totaled a 37.925 all-around, which would have won state.

“I was really calm before I competed and that doesn’t usually happen for me,” Cozza said.

“I just knew I needed to hit today and be clean, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Olivia McGann tied for third on bars. Jackie Fuller, Mackenzie Stotz, Kelly Ryser and Cat Mossing also earned championship medals with the team.

The 11 individual medals are an improvement over last year’s eight. Cozza and Carling each finished their careers with five medals.

Kurfirst is up to nine individual medals, but was disappointed she was unable to take first in the all-around. She was less than three-tenths of a point behind champion Claire Rose Ginsberg of Geneva. Her undoing was her bars routine, which is typically her specialty. She scored an 8.85 on bars, which is well below her season average.

“Of course there’s more that I want to accomplish, but I was proud of myself, especially ending on floor like that,” Kurfirst said. “Next year, I’d like to make my bar routine. It kind of leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, but I’m glad that I came back and proved it to myself that I can do more.”

Lyons Township’s girls gymnastics team repeated as state champions Saturday at Palatine High School and did so comfortably.

After last year’s comeback during the event finals, the Lions had the title locked up entering Saturday and then added some individual awards on top. LT finished with a team score of 151.275, the highest state score since 2007, and won 11 individual medals.

“It’s so exciting,” junior Kelsy Kurfirst said. “I’m happy we came here again and did what we needed to do. It all just came together.”

Katie Carling and Kurfirst each picked up four medals.

Carling, a senior, was second in the all-around, balance beam and floor exercise, and tied for fifth on uneven bars. Kurfirst, a junior, defended her state title on floor exercise and was third in the allaround, vault and balance beam.

Carling, who will be competing for Winona State University in Minnesota beginning next year, said her inspiration was her older sister, Kristi, who was a senior on the 2010 LT team that

LT girls achieve trio of goals set early in season

dsantaromita@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Lyons Township’s girls basketball team saw its season end Friday, but the Lions met the goals they set at the beginning of the year.

LT knocked off Hinsdale Central in the regional semifinal 57-44 to advance to the regional championship, where they lost to host and top sectional seed Whitney Young 7142.

“As I look back over the season, one of the things that I was really happy with was that we were able to develop a strong team bond,” coach Paul Krick said. “Our team chemistry was strong, and we were able to accomplish some team goals.”

Three goals that the team set before the season were realized. Two were to improve during the season and put a winning stretch together toward the end of the season.

The Lions finished with an 18-9 record, having won seven of eight games entering the regional final.

“Winning seven out of eight down the stretch and beating Hinsdale Central was big,” Krick said. “We also had an opportunity to play some teams with some good records and beat Riverside Brookfield, Maine West and Naz.” Finally, the girls wanted to win a playoff game since the program hadn’t won one since the 2009-10 season, which is before any of them were at the school. They did that, and got the added bonus of knocking out rival Hinsdale Central, which was a rubber match for the season series after the teams split two regular-season meetings.

Ultimately, the game against Whitney Young, which is one of the top teams in the state, gave the Lions a glimpse at a high level opponent.

“I was happy with the opportunity because it shows our

girls what it takes to challenge for sectional, supersectional and state appearances,” Krick said.

Senior Kayla Morrissey was the team’s only senior starter and an all-conference player. She was a leader for the team in more ways than just stats.

“She did such a great job this year leading by example,” Krick said. “It was good for our girls to see her work ethic.”

Junior guard Victoria Swift also was an all-conference player. Both Morrissey and Swift advanced in the 3-point shootout that took place at the regional final.

Morrissey and fellow seniors Carly Oboikovitz and Stacy Demes were academic all-conference. The rest of the Lions will be expected to lead a more veteran squad.
