Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka died in the early morning hours Dec. 10 of complications from a stroke less than 24 hours before, according to Brad Hahn, spokesman for the comptroller. She was 70 years old. Topinka, of Riverside, served as state comptroller for four years and was re-elected in November for a second fouryear term. Topinka went to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn the morn-
ing of Dec. 9 after feeling discomfort, according to Hahn. She underwent testing for a possible stroke and was under observation when she lost consciousness. She was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and trusted elected official Judy Baar Topinka,” said Mike Dropka, spokesman for the Riverside Township Republican Organization. “She has affected countless lives and

“Michelle and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Illinois State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka. Judy was an institution in Illinois politics. Her public service spanned more than 30 years, including her tenure in the state legislature and as chair of the Illinois Republican Party. Judy was a fierce advocate for her constituents, which I got to see firsthand when she was state treasurer
– the first woman to hold that office. She was blunt, pragmatic, unfailingly cheerful and energetic, and always willing to put politics aside to find commonsense solutions that made a difference for the people of Illinois. She will be greatly missed. Michelle and I extend our deepest sympathies to Judy’s family, friends and constituents today.” President Barack Obama

Sweet-tempered Jena is a young Beagle/Boston Terrier who will make an excellent canine companion for the right person or family. This little lady weighs 22 pounds, and although she is only two years old, has already been a mom. She is a quiet, friendly dog and much more interested in interacting with people and being petted than playing with toys. A previous leg injury does not interfere with her mobility or walking; however running is not in her best interest. Jena will be a wonderful addition to anyone looking for a gentle, loving animal. She is available for adoption by an individual or family with children at least 8 years old. If you can give Jena the loving home she deserves, please visit her and the other dogs and cats available for adoption at Hinsdale Humane Society.

Officials react to passing of Judy Baar Topinka Local and state officials shared their thoughts and feelings Dec. 10 upon hearing of the passing of Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka: “Today is a sad day in the state of Illinois. I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of my friend, Judy Baar Topinka. As the first female Treasurer of Illinois and a longtime public servant, Judy was a trailblazer in every sense of the word. Never without her signature sense of humor, Judy was a force of nature. She left her mark on the state she has called home her entire life. Her leadership improved Illinois and paved the way for countless women in politics. My deepest sympathies go out to Judy’s son, Joe, daughterin-law, Christina, granddaughter, Alexandra, her family, friends and devoted staff. Today the entire state mourns the loss of one of the greats. Judy Baar Topinka will be incredibly missed.” Gov. Pat Quinn

“Early this morning, Illinois lost one of its all-time greats. Comptroller Topinka’s magnetic, oneof-a-kind personality brought a smile to everyone she met, and she had a servant’s heart, always only caring about what was best for the people of our state. Judy was a tremendous friend, and Diana and I will miss her deeply. We offer our heartfelt condolences and prayers to her family, including son Joseph, as well as her talented and loyal team in the comptroller’s office.” Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner v “I am deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Judy Baar Topinka. She was a great public servant with unlimited fight in her, not only for issues but for people she believed in. Judy knew how to get things done and was willing to do what it takes to get them done.
She was one of a kind and will be dearly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends, of whom she had many.”
– U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs
“Judy Baar Topinka was one of the first politicians I ever became aware of – she was my state Senator before I came into politics. She was beautiful, funny and an independent thinker. I was always in awe of her. She had the qualities we admire in our friends and public officials. She was articulate, sincere and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was smart, practical, tolerant and honest. She wasn’t afraid to take strong positions and stand to defend them. Judy will long be remembered by the people of Illinois. My family and I extend our condolences to her family and many friends.” State Sen. Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, Illinois Senate Republican Leader “I am deeply saddened by the loss of my good friend, Judy Baar Topinka. Judy was supportive of me from the time I ran for school board in the western suburbs in the early 1990s to now as House Republican Leader. She was a mentor and a tireless campaigner for so many of us. Whenever she entered a room all attention shifted to her because she was larger than life and could always make us laugh. When it came to governing, Judy was a straight shooter who called it like it was. You knew where she stood on any issue and could always take her at her word. She loved public service and wanted only the best for Illinois. She will be greatly missed.” State Rep. Jim Durkin, R-Burr Ridge, House Republican Leader

n LAST WEEK’S WEB POLL QUESTION: What’s your favorite holiday entertainment?
Working to make the county even better On Dec. 1, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, my fellow Cook County commissioners and I were sworn in for the 2014-18 term. We welcomed two new members to the board, Commissioner Luis Arroyo Jr., representing the north side of Chicago, and Commissioner Richard Boykin, representing Chicago’s west side and near western suburbs. As I look forward to my COMMUNITY second term on the Cook VOICE County Board, I have a treJeffrey mendous sense of gratitude Tobolski to the residents of the 16th District who sent me to the board in 2010 and re-elected me last month. Without the efforts of so many of my family, friends and volunteers giving tirelessly to our campaign, I would not have been elected. During my first term in office, I focused on increasing county services to our district; holding the line on taxes and fees and improving efficiency at the county. Every year we have approved balanced budgets, reduced the county subsidy to the health and hospital system, reduced the jail population, cut staff and recruited some of the best government professionals across county government. None of these reforms would have been possible without the leadership of President Preckwinkle and my colleagues on the board. In the past four years, we were able to secure tax incentives for several businesses that are redeveloping industrial sites around the district and adding hundreds of jobs. We successfully lobbied for funding for affordable housing, flood remediation and road improvements. We supported legislation to reduce greenhouse gases, to make our County Lobbying Ordinance more transparent and to streamline our revenue collection procedures to help more people to pay their fines and fees. We are expanding the offerings at the Cook County Forest Preserve and are now connecting several bike paths near the Brookfield Zoo. My second term focus will be to continue moving forward on our agenda of investing in the 16th District and making county government more efficient. With our looming pension challenges and turmoil in Springfield, there will be difficult decisions to make and undoubtedly a lot of pain. My efforts will be to reduce the impact on the hard-working families of Cook County, but to work with President Preckwinkle to make those tough decisions to keep Cook County moving in the right direction toward progress and prosperity. It won’t be easy, but with your support we will continue to look for new ways to make the 16th District an even better place to live, work and invest. Have a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Topinka was devoted to public service in Illinois Before she was a politician, Judy Baar Topinka was an award-winning journalist. Topinka, 70, died early Dec. 10, less than a day after she suffered a stroke. She was the first woman in Illinois to serve in two state constitutional offices. She had just won re-election in November as state comptroller. Topinka served the public as a journalist before devoting her life to public service as an elected official. She attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and graduated with a degree in 1966. After graduation she worked part time for the Berwyn, Cicero and Stickney-Forest View Life Newspapers before being hired full time in 1971. In her journalism career, Topinka was a reporter, education editor, feature writer, feature editor and photographer. She won awards from the Illinois Women’s Press Association, the Illinois Press Association and the Illinois State Medical Society. Topinka, a Republican, morphed into one of the most outspoken politicians in Illinois and was a trailblazer for women in politics. “She was a great public servant with unlimited fight in her, not only for issues, but for people she believed in,” said U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs. “Judy

She was one-of-a-kind and will be dearly missed.” Topinka, a lifelong Riverside resident, won election to the Illinois House in 1980. She moved to the state Senate in 1984. Ten years later, she was elected to the first of her three terms as state treasurer. In 2006, she unsuccessfully ran against Rod Blagojevich for Illinois governor. She returned to public office in 2010, when she was elected state comptroller. During her gubernatorial bid in 2006, Topinka described Illinois as “a mirac-
ulously wonderful place to live.” But she also believed it was being hurt and abused by those in office, which is why she decided to run for governor. “If I don’t stop it, I’d be complicit in watching it go down the tubes, and I don’t want to do that,” Topinka said. In every stop along the way, Topinka had one thing in mind: Making Illinois a great place to live. Her style might have been considered unorthodox. Her personality might have been off-putting to some. But her dedication to Illinois and public service can’t be questioned.

It’s Your Money
Commuter tax in Chicago?
By Linda Sokol Francis, E.A. DID YOU MAKE THESE IRA MISTAKES? Did you put in enough? The more you put in, the more you can deduct – up to $5,500 this year and as much as $6,500 if you were born before 1961. Missed a deadline? You actually have until tax-filing deadline – usually April 15 – to make a contribution. Don’t put it off. What kind of rollover? If you’ve changed jobs and want to roll over your employer’s retirement plan to your IRA, be sure it’s a direct rollover. If you touch the money, there’s a 60-day rollover deadline and a 20-percent mandatory withholding tax. If you have a 401K or pension sitting someplace that you no longer work at, don’t leave your money there. Roll it over tax deferred. Take the money out too soon? Keep the account intact until you are 59 1/2, or you’ll pay a 10-percent penalty on top of the usual taxes on the withdrawal. (At age 70 1/2, of course, you will HAVE to start taking a required minimum distribution.) Happy Holidays!

In response to whomever said the police officer should have been charged was completely wrong. The grand jury saw all the evidence and made sure all bases were covered. They took their time. It’s shameful that it was turned into a riot situation. Too many people nowadays are just looking to start trouble. The people that really suffered were the people who lived in the community. The lost property, stores in their own backyards. The police officer’s life is ruined because of the incident and will live with this tragedy the rest of his life. Now more than ever police have to be very careful on what they do, especially when race is involved. If the shoe was on the other foot, you think there would have been riots? We all know the answer to that. This country is really going downhill.

Here we go again, yet another politician in Chicago calling for a tax on commuters whom work in Chicago? Why don’t the mayors in the surrounding suburbs offer the same tax to Chicagoans who commute to our towns? That way we could generate tax revenue to hold down our own town’s taxes or increase spending where it’s needed. Suburban mayors shouldn’t be intimidated by
Chicago and should stand up for the citizens in their communities. The number of people living in Chicago and working in the ssuburbs could be a great new source of income, too. Sad that this country is coming to such methods to raise money.
On Ferguson, Mo., protests
After watching protest marches throughout the U.S., I’ve not yet seen the one sign that would stop the behavior leading to the marches. The sign would read, “Avoid confrontations with police; don’t engage in crime.”
What is torture?
The cry baby liberals are at it again. Imagine those poor babies – those terrorists – who killed thousands of Americans. Some got water boarded, were deprived of sleep or confined to small spaces. That’s not torture. If you want to see torture, go to a torture museum or get captured by ISIS. The CIA got information to stop future attacks. The liberals crippled the CIA a few decades ago and we got 9/11. Why do the liberals hate America?
Country needs to unite
I want to compliment the people who wrote in last week’s Sound Off responding to the black on white nonsense that’s dividing this country in half. We lost more people in the war to free the blacks than all other wars combined. Why can we not act like a United States of America? If you look at the stats, more blacks are killing blacks than whites killing blacks.

ne of the best ways to kick off the holiday season is to decorate. And while it’s easy to load your cart with beautiful decor from your favorite store, Christmas is more personal when decorations are homemade. No time you say? Between planning dinners for the family and throwing cocktail parties for friends, it can be overwhelming. But it is possible to survive it (and enjoy it) by keeping everything simple. This season, let your creative instincts shine through as you watch your mantels, stairwells, and tables come to holiday life, with ideas like these:
Create a magical mantle
Trim a tree like a pro
The Christmas tree is another major focal point in your living room during the holidays. If you’re tired of the same old display year after year, give the tree a fresh look by changing up the ornaments and adding a theme. Start by choosing a specific color scheme, such as red and gold. Don’t have enough decorations to match your new theme? It’s easy and affordable to create your own by using items already around the house. For example, use bulbs from an old string of lights to create a whimsical decoration. Remove bulbs from the strand and spritz the inside of the bulb with Krylon ColorMaster Paint + Primer spray paint in cherry red, emerald green and global blue. Roll the bulb around to distribute the paint for a beautiful translucent look. Add a little glitz with Krylon Glitter Spray in resplendent red, glamorous green and magical multicolor to the outside of the bulb for a festive look, and top off with your favorite embellishments like ribbon or bells. You can even spray paint old ornaments so they fit into your new color scheme. Once your new decor is complete, hang ornaments and lights on your tree before displaying it for the whole family to enjoy.
Add elegant table toppers
If you are hosting get-togethers for family and friends, add a sparkle to your table. Not sure where to start? First, choose two or three colors. Select a table cloth, table runner or placemats in your color palette and consider the arrangement for the middle of the table. Try replacing the traditional red and green with gold and silver accessories - candles, napkin rings, small figures in the plates and other decorative accents. Include candles so the flickering flames can create a warm atmosphere. Even casually scattered pine cones, fir branches, red roses or poinsettias will add a special touch on the table. It’s easy to make your fine china the highlight of the dinner; but this year, try making your placemats the conversation starter by utilizing antique sheet music - which can be found at old book stores or simply printed at home. These sheets will make for a chic and unconventional base for any place setting. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a stressful time of year, with a little effort and creativity you can turn take your holiday decor from ho-hum to homey in no time. For most families, the living room is where gifts are exchanged, holiday movies are enjoyed and stories are shared gathered by the fireplace - a major focal point in the room. Give this cozy centerpiece a warm new look by creating a decorative display for your mantel. Draping a festive garland is one way to achieve a distinctive display. Do-it-yourself banners and garland have become increasingly popular as a great way to personalize your decor. To make your own, start with a heavy fabric, like burlap or the kind used for upholstery, and cut enough pennants for your favorite holiday saying, like “Let it Snow.” Then using a snowflake stencil, spray paint the pattern with a silver color. Krylon Metallic Brilliant Silver, for example, works very well on fabric. Spray paint chipboard letters in a bright white. Once everything dries, spell out your message, one letter per pennant, and adhere the letters. Adorn the banner with plastic snowflakes and holly sprigs to finalize the festive look.

ift-giving doesn’t come naturally to everyone. If you’re struggling to find the perfect present, or if you just need some inspiration, Los Angeles-based celebrity stylist Lawrence VonRompf has tips to help you please all the women on your holiday shopping list. What makes a great gift? - A little pampering goes a long way. Put together a sampling of her favorite bath and body products and fragrances and personalize it to show you put thought into the gift. For example, include a monogrammed item like a scented candle or put all the products in a monogrammed gift box. For the fashionista who has everything - Don’t waste time and money trying to find the latest and greatest in style - she probably already has it. Instead, VonRumpf suggests enhancing her collection with nail polish or lipstick in the season’s hottest colors and shades. “Nail polishes make great gifts because the unique colors add a personal touch,” he says. “I love the colors in the Limited-Edition Mary Kay At Play Hail to the Nails Mini Nail Trio for this season. On the New York Fashion Week runways, navy blue was clearly the new black and Mary Kay’s nail lacquer in Inky Blue aligns perfectly with this trend!” Match her personality - It’s easier to find the right gift if you know her tastes in fashion, style, music or even favorite colors, VonRumpf says. Also consider her interests - would she prefer a spa day or a camping trip? A good rule of thumb is to choose a gift she wouldn’t expect - or purchase herself. For the woman who does everything - Moms are the epitome of hardworking women and deserve a little “me” time. Surprise her - or another under appreciated woman in your life- with a pampering gift to make her feel special and loved. “I’d like to give my mom two things: a chance to unwind and time we can spend together. My favorite product for her is the Limited-Edition Mary Kay Pomegranate Satin Hands Pampering Set,” VonRumpf says. “For a personal touch, pair the set with a gift card or a trip to her favorite nail salon and get a manicure together.” Under the mistletoe - Whether it’s a budding romance or a longterm relationship, surprise her with something thoughtful and personal. A scented gift works perfectly, as it offers a touch of personality and will also remind her of you every time she smells it. “Mary Kay’s Limited-Edition Winter Wishes Fragrance Wand has citrus, jasmine and snow apple notes, so it is festive for the season but also smells great on anyone,” says VonRumpf. “The fragrance wand is easy to travel with, so for a truly memorable gift, I suggest pairing it with a little weekend getaway for you and that special someone.” With these tips, finding the perfect gift for the lucky ladies on your list will be a cinch this holiday season. So get your shopping done early, relax and wait to see the look of joy on her face when she opens your present!
B
argain hunting is practically a sport, especially during the holiday shopping season. Deloitte’s 2014 annual holiday survey predicts the average American will drop nearly $1,300 this holiday season. With that level of spending in mind, planning to save real money elsewhere is crucial to managing a household’s bottom line. Promotions such as standard Black Friday deals or free holiday shipping are nice but often don’t add up very quickly. Huge value can be found on big-ticket items since their need can be anticipated months ahead. Purchasing them seasonally or via yearend clearance sales can provide savvy consumers with hundreds or thousands of dollars in savings.
Here are a few examples of products that fall into each category:
Year-end closeouts
* Cars. With the next year’s models already on lots for a number of months, dealers are anxious to move cars from the previous year. Moreover, December is their last chance to improve year-end sales numbers - whether at the dealer or individual salesperson level. * Flooring. The end of the year is a great time to buy new hardwood flooring. Suppliers and mills often assess their inventory at this time and clear out product lines before the end of the year. Stores such as Lumber Liquidators purchase these products at discounted rates and pass the options and savings directly to consumers, resulting in a great deal that can also increase the value of a home.

Seasonal purchases
* Gas grills and air conditioners. Stores may offer deep discounts on off-season products such as air conditioners and gas grills. This rule of thumb is particularly valuable for people who live in cold weather climates, where summer goods become especially obsolete during the long winter months.
* Furniture. The holiday season brings sales and promotions at many furniture stores on living and dining room items as people are preparing for holiday entertaining. In addition, outdoor furniture is generally at its best price due to it being out of season. * Boats. Boat dealers are often trying to move inventory during the winter season, which gives the buyer an upper hand in negotiating prices. The off-season is also a popular time for boat shows, where dealers often offer their best prices of the year. No matter a consumer’s methodology, a little planning goes a long way in finding bargains. There are very helpful websites - such as www.dealnews.com - that do a great job staying on top of deals both large and small. Online forums and traditional word of mouth can also assist in the hunt.

Last-minute shopping tips to check everyone off your holiday list
T
he days are flying quickly past, and the holiday season will be over before you know it. If you haven’t completed - or even started - your holiday gift shopping yet, don’t worry; there’s still plenty of time to get everything accomplished. First, be sure to find an idea for everyone on your list before you even think about shopping. With your ideas written down on a piece of paper, you’ll be efficient in checking each and every name off your list. If the ideas are causing you the most problems, try an Internet search. Keywords to use can include “gifts for mom” or “musical gifts for a teenage boy.” And if your list includes people with hobbies, be sure to try an Internet search using those keywords as well. Since you’re already at the computer looking for ideas, you might as well continue using it to make your purchase. There’s a good chance you can find the same item for sale on several different vendor sites. A quick online search will help you find the item for the best price, and you might also discover you can get the present gift wrapped as well. When comparing prices, be sure to confirm that the vendor can ship your gift on time, what the cost is for shipping, and whether the company has a return policy. You also can go online to find excellent discounts and coupons for the items on your list. For example, Ebates. com provides discounts and coupons for vendors, and also rewards you with cash back on your purchases once you’ve finished your shopping. So not only are you able to find the item you wish to purchase with a free shipping offer or at a discounted price, but you’ll also receive a percentage of your purchase as cash back to be used however you want. Before you finalize your purchase, make certain it will arrive before the holiday. Online retailers will provide you with last-minute shipping information so you will know when it’s too late. You’ll also know if you need to pay more for a faster shipping service. Websites like Ebates often have discounts on expedited shipping. The good news is, if you ship the present online while sitting at your computer at home or at the office, you can avoid the long holiday lines at the post office. If you haven’t started your holiday shopping yet, your secret is safe. With these tips, you can check every name off your list with minimal effort and know that every gift will be delivered in time for Christmas day.

Our final plate was the chicken-fried chicken. It was, by far, the largest item we ordered, and could be considered a full-sized meal. A chicken breast – flattened, breaded and fried – lay atop mashed potatoes and was topped with a fried egg and white country gravy. My companion devoured nearly the entire
plate without speaking, only smiling between bites. While we were a little fry heavy in our order, there were plenty of selections to satisfy any appetite, including the pan-seared scallops, Gulf shrimp brochette, grilled romaine salad, shrimp and grits, and a grilled portobello, zucchini and squash salad.
The website notes the kitchen uses grass-fed beef and wildcaught seafood. My companion was a little worried that small plates would mean certain hunger after the meal was finished, but that was not the case. Another visit to Union House American Kitchen is certainly on the horizon.

WINFIELD – It was a sunny and chilly December day when my companion and I decided to head to Union House American Kitchen in Winfield for lunch. The space was inviting as soon as we stepped inside, where the high, white-painted wood ceilings and decor felt reminiscent of historic Americana. The lighting fixtures over the tables were styled after old-fashioned bulbs, and behind a long, wooden bar that could easily seat 15, was a chalkboard with a plethora of craft beers and drink specials. The restaurant is a smallplate gastropub that our waiter explained focuses on locally harvested and seasonal ingredients. Since we were first-timers at the restaurant and newbies to the small-plate scene, our waiter suggested we order several selections to share. Menu items range from salads to seafood and steak, so after much discussion, my companion and I selected four plates to split between us. I couldn’t resist ordering the fried pickles as an appetizer. Silver-dollar-sized slices of dill pickle were coated in American Patriot beer batter and then fried. A creamy avocado and buttermilk sauce accompanied the half-dozen slices for dipping. Not greasy, they were absolutely delicious, with the sauce offering a cool complement. Crab hush puppies called out to my seafood-aficionado companion. They were made with dried corn and crabmeat shaped into ping-pong-ballsized portions and fried. The four hush puppies resting on a sweet and spicy honey pepper sauce were very tasty, and the crabmeat was fully present, not hidden behind the corn. A bourbon pork skewer was next. The tender pork was glazed in garlic and brown sugar and had a side of sriracha cream for dipping. Again, the pairing of the sauce with the entree proved to be perfect.

LT girls work together for undefeated start By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE – Superstars are great, but depth and team chemistry can go a long way towards creating team success. That’s what the Lyons Township girls basketball team is experiencing this season. The Lions are 8-0 despite the lack of a dominant leading scorer or star player. “The girls have bought in,” coach Paul Krick said. “We got great senior leadership. We have five seniors doing an amazing job and girls are accepting their roles. We don’t have any superstars on our team. We have one of those teams that any coach would love to coach.” The Lions broke out last week with three crucial wins in the West Suburban Silver. First was a 45-35 win at Proviso West Dec. 9. Two days later, LT beat defending conference champ Downers Grove North 45-40. The Lions capped it off with a 58-43 win at York on Saturday. LT is now 4-0 in the Silver and the last team undefeated in the conference. Balanced scoring has been one of the keys to success. Eight different players scored against both the Trojans and the Dukes. “It’s the first time in a while we’ve been undefeated this far into the season, so I think it’s really motivating us to keep playing well,” senior guard Gaby Galassini said. “I think we’ve definitely become more of a team. I think we work together a lot better this year than we did last year. Overall, everyone is passing the ball better, sharing the ball better and I think that’s really helping.” Galassini and senior center Hope Miller led the Lions with 13 points each against York. Vicki Swift scored 11 against the Trojans and 10 against the Dukes. The win against Downers Grove North proved LT is a contender in the conference this year, but the win at York showed this team has some

Our schedule is only going to get tougher and our goal has always been to play our best basketball at the end of the season.” The Lions return to play Monday in Wheaton North’s holiday tournament. LT’s next conference game is Jan. 3 against Oak Park-River Forest. “Our goal this year was to win conference,” Galassini said. “That’s something we haven’t done at LT in quite a few years. “Every team in this conference is real tough so we have to come out and play every game, Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com but I definitely think we have a good shot if we keep playing Lyons Township’s Nina Scaramella drives to the basket Thursday in a home game against Downers Grove North.
