Indian Head Park native Gabrielle Walsh landed her first major film rule as the female lead in “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” which comes out in theaters Friday . Walsh, a 2007 Lyons Township High School grad, acted throughout her childhood and attended a theater school in Moscow. studied under acclaimed acting coach Kathryn Gately at NIU and attended the Moscow Art Theater School, John Walsh wasn’t sure about her decision to move to Los Angeles fresh out of college. “When she first went out there, I was very skeptical about it,” he said. “It’s a shot in the dark. But she’s done very well.” Gabrielle Walsh couldn’t reveal much about the movie, but she did offer an overview: Set in Oxnard, Calif., the film follows a young man named Jesse who becomes possessed by strange, unknown forces after investigating the site where a woman died. Jesse’s friends Hector and Marisol (Walsh’ character) struggle to save their friend as he fights the demonic forces gripping him.

Her mother loved to watch scary movies, so Gabrielle Walsh was introduced to them when she was little. But horror isn’t her dad’s favorite genre. “She hasn’t really been able to tell me too much about the movie,” John Walsh said. “If my daughter wasn’t in it, I don’t think I’d be going to see it.” But she is, so he is hoping to organize a special viewing at a local theater. What does John Walsh think about millions of people seeing his daughter on the big screen? “It’s pretty impressive,” he said. “I’m pretty proud of her. She’s had a dream, and she’s followed her dream.” To watch the trailer for the movie,gotowww.paranormal movie.com.

and scared me … We filmed in some dark places.” Until landing her first role in a movie, Walsh appeared mainly in commercials and short films. She moved to Los Angeles in 2011 shortly after graduating from Northern Illinois University and partnered with an agent, already an accomplishment for such an inexperienced actress. But for several years, she auditioned for part after part – for movies, TV shows, soap operas – and, despite getting plenty of callbacks, never snatched a major role. “It would come down to her and somebody who’s been in the industry a long time who had much more experience,” her father John Walsh said. “And they go with the experience, you know.” Although his daughter

Gabrielle Walsh’s cellphone wasn’t getting any reception in the Hollywood studio where she was auditioning for a TV show, hoping to land her first big role. So, even though her agents had gotten together for a conference call to tell her the good news, they couldn’t deliver it. Later in the day, Walsh exited the bathroom at the studio when she got a call from an unknown number. “I get a call from the hairdresser asking me what’s a good day for me to come in and get my hair done,” Walsh said. “It was a little frustrating because I knew I couldn’t scream in the studio.” She screamed with joy as soon as she got in her car, though. Walsh, a 24-year-old actress from Indian Head Park, landed the lead female role in the new film “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.” The film is the fifth in a series of horror movies that use security cameras and other recording devices to reveal scenes as found footage. The movie hits theaters Friday in the U.S. and Canada and will eventually be shown worldwide. When Walsh watched the movie for the first time, the screaming started again, this time out of scared shock. “You don’t always know what’s going to make it into the film,” said Walsh, a 2007 Lyons Township High School graduate. “Even the things I had seen surprised, shocked

What was eventually ruled a 3.2-magnitude earthquake rattled the Chicago area Nov. 4 and was felt as far as south suburban Milwaukee. The quake was preceded by a scheduled blast seven seconds earlier at McCook’s Federal Quarry, and scientists said the two events were almost positively linked. Northwestern University has since installed a device at the quarry where geologists are monitoring data about seismic activity at the quarry. Hanson Material Service Corporation, the company that conducted the blast, has not resumed blasting operations since the incident.

One of the best parts of our job is meeting residents who do incredible things and have extraordinary stories to tell. Check out some of our favorite uplifting and inspirational stories that we covered in 2013.

1. La Grange resident organizes collection after flooding La Grange resident Ax Torres observed the after effects of a heavy storm April 18 on his way to work – such as cars up to their headlights in water – and decided he wanted to help. Using trucks from DHL, his employer, Torres organized a collection that brought in hundreds of pounds of clothing, canned goods, bottled water and cleaning supplies, which were then distributed to area residents affected by the flooding. Read more coverage online at shawurl.com/17i.

2. Western Springs mothers remember Sandy Hook victims Like parents across the country, Western Springs resident Nicole Chen was heartbroken after 20 children and six staff members were shot dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, 2012. Shortly after the tragedy, Chen joined Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which lobbies for reformed gun safety laws. Chen organized a vigil one year after the shooting, bringing together about 30 people on a cold, snowy morning to honor the victims. Read more coverage online at shawurl.com/wvs.

It’s Your Money By Linda Sokol Francis, E.A.

THE WORST TAX SCAMS Only have a C.P.A. or E.A. prepare your return!!! Each year the IRS lists the worst tax scams. Here are some: • Identity theft tops the list, often used to file fake claims for fraudulent refunds. Get IRS help at 800-908-4490. • Fake charities solicit money after natural disasters. • Phishing attempts to get personal financial information via e-mail purporting to come from the IRS or banks. • Fake tax preparers may promise extra-large refunds. RIVERSIDE – Jeff Lukas wants children to learn how to laugh at themselves, and he plans to teach them exactly how with a new improv class starting in January. The longtime comedian and Riverside resident has watched many children come out of their shells while teaching comedy classes at a summer camp in Wisconsin the past few years and he Jeff Lukas wanted to bring Comedian the fun home. “It’s great to see kids feeling like an idiot going on stage and at the end of it having the most fun they’ve ever had,” said Lukas, 48, who has performed at the Second City Training Center and toured as a stand-up comedian. Lukas’ improv classes are for ages 10 to 16 and will take place on four Wednesdays, starting Jan. 8 and going through Jan. 29. If the initial set of classes go well, Lukas said he’ll consider adding shows and other activities to future classes. “When you’re in front of people and don’t care what you look like, it’s going to help you as a person,” Lukas said. “It really helps kids.” Lukas now runs a pack-

Response to Obama bashing This is for the caller about the [Nelson] Mandela letter who was upset with the newspaper because they print [Barack] Obama bashing. Well, Obama is a liar. If you don’t have anything more as a defense than Bush and Cheney, which was six years ago, then you have no defense at all. Move on. Here is my red line. I am drawing it. Don’t cross it. But never mind, Obama moves his red line all the time anyway.

Water bill out of control The water bills from [Downers Grove] are out of control. The community needs to get together in protest. We are a family of two. The bill is more than $100 for two months. How are people making it? Enough is enough. Come on people, let’s do something about it. Appears everyone has the money and no big deal?

Show of faith I thank Costello Jewelry Co. for blessing us with their Christmas ad in the Dec. 26 edition. It is refreshing to hear business owners who are not afraid to speak up for their faith. Thank you for the reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. God bless you.

Well, you make an interesting argument that teens need a break, but I don’t agree with you. Sure you think I may sound like someone’s parent, but I am not. I am 33 and I was in your shoes at one point. You should appreciate your parents keeping you busy because work builds character and makes you a responsible individual. It also prepares you for the future. Do you really think when you’re in the working world you will get a Christmas vacation? Sure you might if you have paid time off, but some places may not even allow their employees to use that. Do you think when you graduate high school and college, life will give you a break? No way, it’s like a top 40 radio station – the hits just keep coming and by not getting a break now, you will be prepared for life when it won’t give you a break. The biggest positive to any parents keeping their teens busy is that they won’t do anything stupid such as drugs, alcohol or stealing Christmas decorations from people. If you want a break from chores around the house, consider doing some charity work, now is the time people are in need.

Top reasons why you should resolve to spend local this year Most of us will make resolutions this month – to lose weight, stop smoking or to take up yoga – in order to make improvements in our lives. However, there is something else that will have a long-lasting impact on our lives and on our communities. That is the commitment to shift some of our spending from national COMMUNITY chains to independent busiVOICE nesses. Steve It’s estimated that if residents of an average American Jasinski city shifted 10 percent of their spending from national chains to local businesses, $235 million per year would be added to the community’s economy. That’s a big number. Why should you resolve to shift a portion of your spending to neighborhood businesses this year? Here’s what it will do: Keep dollars in your community: For every $100 spent at a chain, only $13 stays and benefits your local community. Conversely, that $100 spent at local businesses keeps $45 in the local economy. Preserve local character: There’s an economic advantage when a community is able to preserve its one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character. Mega-malls offer pretty much the same thing, whether located in Austin, Texas, or Hartford, Conn. Local decision-making: When a business is locally owned and operated, important decisions that have wide-ranging consequences are made by people who live in the community and feel the impact of those decisions. Provide jobs and wages: Independent businesses create more jobs, employ your neighbors and often provide better wages and benefits than their chain competitors. They also buy from local suppliers and service providers, pay local taxes and make donations to community causes. Better for the environment: Local stores help to sustain vibrant, convenient and walkable town centers, which reduce sprawl, save gas and minimize water and air pollution. How will you shift 10 percent of your spending this year?

Restaurant reviews

Spend an evening in South America at Rio’s ADDISON – One of the joys of living in this melting pot of a nation is that everyone comes here, and they bring their delicacies with them. I love American, Italian, Mexican, Thai and Japanese cuisine, along with several other varieties I’ve enjoyed over the years. But every once in a while, it’s fun to branch out by tasting something new. And something new is exactly what I found at Rio’s Fine South American Cuisine in Addison. Billed as a Peruvian restaurant on various websites, Rio’s also has delicacies from Argentina and Brazil that are sure to tempt your taste buds. When you first walk in, you’re greeted by a bar area that’s tasteful and hip, but not particularly ethnic. You could meet business clients for drinks here and they wouldn’t necessarily even recall that it was a South American establishment – unless they look closely at the wine list, which is filled with selections from all over the continent. Enter the dining area, though, and you’ll find yourself in a scene that’s both elegant and evocative of the dishes you’re about to sample. A massive mural across the back wall combines the famous Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. Other small decor touches give hints of South America without overwhelming the room and making it kitschy. I stopped by Rio’s on a recent evening with a dining companion, and I started right off with an authentic drink from south of the equator – a Dona Paula Sauvignon Blanc from Argentina, which the wine list describes as “bright, crisp, tart green apple skin, lime zest, guava, and grapefruit with a touch of minerality.” It proved to be a terrific accompaniment to the dishes that followed. We started with the Peruvian Sampler, wanting to

The sampler includes the ceviche de pescado (a Peruvian specialty), a tamale, anticucho de la pollo (chicken skewer), and papa a la huancaina (a savory sauce over boiled potatoes). I most enjoyed the flavorful

skewer, while my companion was a big fan of the tamale. When selecting an entree, I was immediately taken by the bright pictures of every dish on the menu. One item, the Pollo Enrollado, grabbed my attention right away. It fea-

spinach and cheese. The chicken is rolled in “panko” and topped with Algarrobina sauce. I expected something savory and was pleasantly surprised that it was more complex than that. “It’s got a sweetness to it,” my dining companion

remarked happily after trying a bite. My companion’s dish was even better, the Tallarin Verde con Churrasco. It included a generous helping of perfectly seasoned steak alongside fettucine mixed with Peruvian pesto (spinach, basil, white cheese, walnuts and olive oil). The steak and the pasta both tasted great on their own, but together the flavors were perfectly paired. We both really wanted dessert – interesting items included churros filled with caramel and hot chocolate dipping sauce, and ice cream made with Andean Lucuma fruit – but we were both too stuffed to properly enjoy it. That just means that next time I’ll have to – regretfully – forgo the Peruvian Sampler to save some room to try some exotic ice cream.

Bears’ final loss elicits special kind of hurt By TOM MUSICK tmusick@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Losing hurts. But losing to the Green Bay Packers? In the final minute? To end your season? That’s a whole ’nother level of sports heartbreak. And it happened to the Bears. At the hands of the Packers. Again. No wonder the Soldier Field speakers blared a sad song in the waning moments of the Bears’ 33-28 loss to their oldest rivals. The outcome lifted the Packers into the playoffs as NFC North champions, while the Bears turned to face a painful offseason that could include many difficult personnel changes. The lyrics filled the ears of stunned fans after the Packers’ game-winning score. “You had a bad day,”

echoed the song by Daniel Powter. “The camera don’t lie. You’re coming back down, and you don’t really mind. You had a bad day. You had a bad day.” For the Bears, it’s going to get worse before it gets better. Any football fan will tell you that the line between winning and losing is razor thin. One ill-timed mistake can separate contenders from pretenders in the NFL. That’s why it was tough to see Bears general manager Phil Emery make the rounds in a quiet locker room after the game. One by one, Emery visited with his players, placing an arm on their shoulder and offering some brief words of encouragement. Some Bears players were so upset that they had not yet removed their pads more than 20 minutes after the

final whistle. Others were so distraught that they leaned forward and braced themselves against their lockers, heads down, eyes shut. Bears linebacker Lance Briggs wanted to escape. With his stare fixed on the carpet, he pulled a rolling suitcase and refused to stop and speak with reporters. Other players spoke softly about narrowly losing a winner-take-all game. “This is going to hurt,” cornerback Tim Jennings said. “It’s hard, man” defensive tackle Stephen Paea said. “We do this for each other.” On the opposite side of the stadium, Packers players celebrated like happy children. Some players snapped pictures with their cellphones to capture the moment. What was it like when the

Masterbrand Cabinetry

Packers first entered the locker room after the game? “Oh, my God,” defensive lineman Ryan Pickett said. “[We were] just excited, man. Jumping around. Everybody was happy, man. “It’s our journey. We made it. Now we get to erase our slate, start a new one, and play ball some more in January.” So close were the Bears to enjoying this moment. So close were the Packers to a long, quiet offseason. “You can describe it a lot better with your writing,” Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk said. “You guys are professionals. I’m not smart enough to really put it into words. I wish I was. “But it was nuts. It’s been crazy, this whole run.” As Hawk spoke, the image of Emery visiting with his

players proved hard to shake. Those players will part ways this week and disperse to their hometowns across the country, and dozens soon might learn that they will not be coming back. It’s nothing personal. “This is the NFL,” Paea said. “If you don’t do your job, they make changes.” Surely, the Packers could empathize as NFL brethren. Surely, some part of them could feel badly for the Bears. Right? “No,” Pickett said with a grin. “There’s not one part of me that feels for the Bears.” Then he laughed. It was the deep, belly laugh of a 6-foot-2, 340-pound man. It was a winners’ laugh.

In the end, Cutler is Cutler sports@nwherald.com

He is who he is. In the first half, his offense showed the bad as it stalled on four three-and-outs, although it also showed the good. On his second drive, an eight-play, 80-yard series, Cutler stormed downfield, completing three passes. He topped it off with a 4-yard throw to running back Matt Forte through the cold, misty air, giving his team a 7-0 lead and its only points of the first half. Cutler couldn’t control much of what happened after that, though. He couldn’t control Alshon Jeffery fumbling a precise pass in the second quarter, setting up a Green Bay field goal. He couldn’t control that

the defense allowed 20 second-half points, or that he threw the ball 24 times, the fewest he has attempted in a full game since last December’s Bears-Packers matchup. Those looking for answers won’t find any, as the quarterback quandary may be delayed another year with a franchise tag estimated to be worth more than $16 million. On Sunday, Cutler was neither the demon slayer nor the utter failure. He was, simply, Jay Cutler. Calm-tempered, scruffy-faced, strong-armed, up-and-down Jay Cutler. After the game he stood at the podium, wearing gray and black and a tired gaze. He answered questions about plays and then the postseason. “I’d love to (come back),” he said before changing the topic. “[Green Bay] controlled the clock well. Early in the

“We didn’t make enough plays to win,” he said. “That’s what it boiled down to.” After a question about his hoarse throat – he had a cold – there was silence. No more questions. “All right,” said Cutler. “See you guys.” He hustled from the podium and left the room.

CHICAGO – The tangled web of the Jay Cutler narrative was supposed to be straightened out Sunday. His last game on contract, a 33-28 thriller won by the Packers, was going to make it clear. Play well, Good Jay, forget your 1-7 record against Green Bay, and all is OK. Play poorly, Bad Jay, throw a few picks, and it’s time to go. “The speculation is, ‘Let’s see how he does in this kind of stage,’ ” coach Marc Trestman said after the game. “I thought Jay played well enough for us to win tonight.” But the web twisted even more during the game as fans and media sought the answer to the beaten question: Who is he – Good Jay or Bad Jay? The answer, though, lies in the question itself.

Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com

Lyons Township’s Jim Cullen steals the ball during a Dec. 26 game against Wheaton North at the York holiday tournament. The Lions slipped past the Falcons in the tourney opener and defeated Conant in the second round Friday.

Hester making an impact for LT hoops By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Currently, Chris Hester is a starter on the Lyons Township varsity boys basketball team. Four years ago, he just started playing the sport. The senior forward has taken a big step forward with the team this season. He has been a big contributor for the Lions, even leading the team in scoring with 21 points in the first round of York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Classic on Thursday.

“This year I’m just trying to be more aggressive and get my name out there,” Hester said. “I want to actually go somewhere for this. Last year I was just some kid on varsity.” Hester has received interest mostly from Division III programs, but is hoping to play Division I basketball. While that goal may seem lofty for a raw player like Hester, his progression as a player has been rapid. “He brings a level of athleticism that is hard for teams to

match,” LT coach Tom Sloan said. “He’s really good going to the basket, offensive rebounding and out in transition.” Hester plays forward for the Lions despite being just 6-foot-3. His strength and athletic ability help him make up for the relative lack of height. By his own account, Hester has gotten stronger, which has allowed him to play better on the interior. He also has a perimeter game to stretch defenders, but that’s still an area that has room for improvement.

“I’m trying as hard as I can,” Hester said. “Just work on my shot, that’s something I need to do during a game, start shooting.” While Hester admits he would probably be a better player if he had started when he was younger, basketball wasn’t on his radar initially. Despite the fact that his family all played basketball, another sport had Hester’s interest. “When I was a little kid I wanted to play baseball,” he said. “I always loved baseball, but then my whole family was

a basketball family and I wanted to do it. I ended up loving it. “I don’t even watch baseball anymore.” Once Hester’s attention turned to basketball he got some help from his dad to put the time in. “My dad helped me get better,” Hester said. “We shot a lot every day this summer. That’s how I got to where I am now. “I’m really looking for that D-I [offer]. That’s what I’m trying to work as hard as I can to get.”

YEAR OF THE CHAMPION

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com

CC • Wednesday, January 1, 2014 • mysuburbanlife.com • Suburban Life

As the calendar flips to 2014, what better time than to reflect on some of the best performances put forth by local high school athletes in 2013. Several state champions were crowned, and even more teams and athletes made their marks with top finishes in state competitions.

School: Lyons Township Sport: Girls gymnastics Place: State champs State run: The Lions won the first state title in the program’s history and in a dramatic fashion. LT trailed Prairie Ridge by a quarter of a point after the first day of competition and could only make up the ground in event finals. The Lions pulled off the rare Saturday comeback by adding 0.575 to the team total in the event finals and won the title. Sophomore Kelsy Kurfirst won floor exercise, was second in the all-around and on vault and tied for third with junior teammate Katie Carling on balance beam. Junior Michelle Cozza was second on bars and tied for third on vault. Quote: “When I improved on the bar score it got me motivated and I knew that our team had a potential of winning state so we all carried that to beam,” junior Michelle Cozza said. “It was surreal.”

Name: Stephanie Lin, Lyons Township Sport: Badminton Place: State champ State run: Lin was a surprise winner at the state tournament last spring. She was seeded in the 5-8 range, but dropped just one set all tournament. She upset top seed Ailynna Chen of Hinsdale Central in the quarterfinal round and later defeated Hinsdale South’s Emma Adcock in the final. Quote: “I don’t think I was expecting that at all. One of my coaches says your best weapon is between your ears. I just kept that in mind.” Stephanie Lin said.

Name: Mailin Struck, Riverside Brookfield Sport: Girls cross country Place: Class 2A state champ State run: The German exchange student came to RB with an established running background. From the day she stepped on campus, she became one of the favorites to win state. She was dominant throughout the year and won the Class 2A state title by 29 seconds. the season without the most recent state trophy in its possession for the first time in eight years and made it their mission to win back state. Fenwick knocked off defending champion Lyons Township in a tense sectional final and had just one close match in the three at state to

win the conference, regional or sectional races but were good enough to get to state and earn the program’s second state trophy in a row and ninth overall. Henry Hostettler, Dan Lupano and James Ryan all placed in the top 50 at state. LT was the third of three West Suburban Silver

teams to grab a state trophy.

School: Fenwick Sport: Girls swimming Place: Third in state State run: The Friars have become one of the elite programs in girls swimming and showed that yet again this fall. By taking third at state, Fenwick won its third state trophy and fourth in five years. The individual successes of Mimi Schneider, who won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly,

School: Fenwick Sport: Girls soccer Place: Third in Class 2A State run: Fenwick’s run to state in girls soccer gave the program its third appearance at state and second trophy. The Friars were the only team to come even within a goal of state champ Glenwood, losing to the Titans 2-1 in a semifinal. Seniors Lauren Frank, Bridget Hillsman, Cali Pyzdrowski, Kelly Collins and Elizabeth Cusick were among the key players for the veteran team.

Name: Alex Chatt, Lyons Township Sport: Girls tennis Place: Third in state State run: Chatt was a standout her entire high school career. The Northwestern recruit made the state tournament all four years and placed in the top three the last three years. This fall she took third place to add another state medal to her list.

Name: Chris Rediehs, Lyons Township Sport: Boys gymnastics Place: Third in state on horizontal bar State run: The Lions made state as a team for the first time since 2003 and Rediehs was a big reason why. The sophomore was sixth in the all-around, but his high point came when he tied for third on the horizontal bar with a score of 9.2.

Name: Jameer Thurman, Proviso West Sport: Wrestling Place: Third in Class 3A, 195 pounds State run: Thurman won a regional title, but settled for third at the sectional meet.
