Moving into my second year of serving this great community, I have been excited to be a part of watching and growing with this Village as we move into a world of “new normal” after facing the many challenges the pandemic brought us.

With many events such as the Lilac Parade, the Lilac Ball, the Lilac Times Arts and Craft Fair, the yearly crowning of the Lilac Princesses by the Lombard Jr. Women’s Club, and the exciting addition of a Farmers Market on St. Charles Road in 2022, we will continue to celebrate Lilac Time for many years to come.

This past year, I have come to admire the strong sense of community that makes Lombard unique. Neighbor helping neighbor helping neighbor is at the core of American society. I have seen this quality in Lombard reflected by residents who shop small businesses, support local events, and commit time to organizations and groups. In 2022, the residents continue to “talk the talk” and “walk the walk” together.

As President & CEO of the Chamber, I continue to be committed to growth, community, advocacy, and facing the challenges and opportunities that lie in front of us. We continue to be a strong, vital organization made up of businesses, professionals, community and civic organizations, and individuals who are working together to support and cultivate Lombard and its surrounding area’s economic development.

As we move to put the pandemic behind us, we look at 2022 at the year of “Bigger. Better. History

id you know that the first woman to vote in the state of Illinois was from Lombard? Or that the creator of the Little Orphan Annie comic was also a Lombard resident? Lombard is rich in history, and the Lombard Historical Society (LHS) was created to preserve that history as well as educate those interested in the village’s roots.

LHS operates out of a Victorian cottage at 23 W. Maple St., the first property of the historical society. In 1981, an 1887 Carriage House was moved to the site and renovated in order to house the many activities hosted

by LHS. For the past the year, the LHS has been working with the Village of Lombard on a 2,000-squarefoot addition to the Carriage House. The project includes updating the archive and providing more storage for new collections along with modifications for ADA accessibility and new offices for staff and volunteers. Note the Carriage House is closed while under construction. Check the LHS website at www.lombardhistory.org for the latest updates.

LHS also operates the Sheldon Peck Homestead, located at 355 E. Parkside. The house, which was deeded to the society in 1996, has been renovated to its original 1839 configuration.

“The house is a verified Underground Railroad site,” said Alison Costanzo, LHS’s executive director, noting that the society’s website offers extensive information on the village’s various locations and history.

In addition, LHS helps maintain the original 1851 Lombard Cemetery.

Programming and events at LHS help bring history to life for participants. A new exhibit

opening this spring is Porcelain Utopia: MidCentury Lustron Homes in Illinois and beyond, featuring photographs by Dirk Fletcher.

Recognizing a housing shortage at the end of the 1940s with GIs coming home from World War II, industrialist and entrepreneur Carl Strandlund recognized this opportunity and retooled his fledgling porcelain-enameled stainless steel gas station and hamburger stand business into a promise for these GIs. This free exhibit runs April 14 to Aug. 27, 2022.

Other events this year include a Civil War Living History in May and concerts.

After being postponed due to the pandemic, the Lilac Heritage Tour returns this year.

This 45-minute tour of Lilacia Park explores Lombard’s rich history and horticulture.

Tickets are available for purchase online in advance. Tours will be held April 29 through May 14. Tours aren’t held May 1, 2 or 9.

While in-person programming resumes this year, LHS continues to offer some virtual events, including Behind the Beautiful Dress: Making Cloth And Clothing In The 19th Century. This virtual event will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24. This presentation will explore cloth and clothing production in the 19th century and textiles’ impact on preCivil War life in Illinois, such as how the cotton economy involved the entire United States and how the ready-made clothing industry grew out of the American textile industry.

After spending time indoors during the colder winter months, people are ready to emerge outdoors and enjoy the longer days and warmer temperatures. And the Lombard Park District offers plenty of opportunities for people to enjoy some fun in the sun. Here’s a look at some of the activity options that were in store as of press time.

GO TO THE PARK

From Babcock’s Grove Memorial Garden to Westmore Woods –that’s almost A to Z – the Lombard Park District offers 18 parks, each with unique attributes.

Swimmers can sign up for a variety of classes including swimming lessons, water fitness classes, and Lombard Waves Swim and Dive Team. The facility also hosts special events throughout the summer.

If you aren’t pressed for time, take advantage of the course’s midday special, which features $11 green fees from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Don’t have time to play a full nine? Play the first six holes for $12 and add a golf rental for $8.

Ready to beat the summer swelter?

Paradise Bay Water Park offers several ways to do just that. The award-winning aquatic facility at 437 E. St. Charles Road features a leisure pool, spouts, fountains, water sprays, whirlpool, water walk, four water slides, tot pool, dive well, lap pool and more. Stop by the full-service concession stand for a snack after swimming.

A crown jewel of the Park District is Lilacia Park. Located at 150 S.Park Ave., this 8.5-acre park provides visitors not only with walking paths and spacious benches, but peaceful views to boot.

The park each year sees over 700 lilacs and 35,000 tulips in bloom. The park is best known as being the home to the annual Lombard Lilac Time festival, held during the first two weeks of May.

Paradise Bay offers private facility rentals as well as options for birthday parties and camp outings. Note facility private rental times and fees are subject to change based on current state guidelines.

Challenge friends to a round or play a more leisurely game with a buddy while also playing catch-up. Lombard Golf Course, a nine-hole facility at 2400 W. Butterfield Road, can accommodate foursomes and has rates for both residents and non-residents.

“We have such a delightful variety of options,” said Melissa Infusino, President and CEO of the Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce. “It is wonderful because we have an amazing downtown area with Cruise Nights, Lilac Times Arts and Craft Fair, Wine Walk, along with several other events, and we are excited to be introducing a Farmers Market in 2022 which will enhance the shopping and dining in the downtown area.”

Lombard offers so much that the village can basically be divided into two areas of outstanding options.

“When you come to Lombard you can head to the downtown area, or the Butterfield Road corridor,” Infusino said.

“Downtown has a great mix of shopping, retail, services, and restaurants, or you can head over to Butterfield Road which hosts a variety of shopping and dining choices, including Yorktown Mall. Yorktown Mall also houses everything you need for shopping and dining under one roof for your convenience.”
