reetings! It is my privilege to welcome you to the 2022 Lockport Chamber of Commerce Community Resource Guide. The Lockport Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and I are proud to represent more than 230 area businesses. Our community guide is the perfect way to introduce you to our members and the Lockport community. I am honored to represent such a dynamic group of dedicated businesses and individuals.

Now more than ever, the Chamber’s role of support, advocacy, promotion, education and service is pivotal to our business community. Our mission of providing valuable opportunities and resources to our members and community remains at the heart of our organization.

Needless to say the COVID-19 pandemic significantly changed the way business has been conducted and forced the Chamber to modify our events. Through it all, the Lockport Chamber and business community worked together and created opportunities for members to continue to connect and support each other during unprecedented times. Throughout the pandemic, we have appreciated the chance to work with so many of you on a variety of items like access to federal assistance, the development of a safe reopening plan and pivoting to take advantage of new opportunities. We coordinated with our health care providers, federal, state, county and city governments and partner agencies to provide information and to ensure the voice of the business community was heard.

Although past events and regular day to day business may have looked a little different, we were fortunate enough to be able to proceed with Old Canal Days this past June giving the businesses and community the opportunity to come together and celebrate a Lockport tradition. As we prepare for the new year, the Lockport Chamber of Commerce have several great events on the calendar including Business Before Hours, Business After Hours, Chamber workshops and luncheons, Lockport Old Canal Days, Job Fair, and Market at the Square to name a few.

The Lockport Chamber of Commerce recognizes the importance of small businesses and believes it is the foundation for a strong community. Helping businesses increase their exposure and navigate the everchanging marketplace all while maintaining and building their customer base continues to be our focus. The Lockport Chamber of Commerce strives to connect its members with the residents to help them flourish and succeed.

HISTORY OF LOCKPORT

ESTABLISHED AS THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE ILLINOIS & MICHIGAN CANAL in 1836, Lockport lies nestled in the Des Plaines River Valley. The I&M Canal fueled the growth of the City of Chicago, the Midwest region, and the nation.

Working to complete the I&M Canal, Chief Engineer William Gooding realized that the site of present-day Lockport, which is 40 feet higher than Joliet, had great water-power potential. In its early days, Lockport thrived as the canal’s headquarters and as an agricultural processing center. Lockport saw the construction of dozens of flour mills, grain warehouses, and boatyards.

As the first navigable link between the Great Lakes region and the Mississippi River, the canal played an enormous role in theeconomic growth of Illinois and the Midwest. The arrival of the Chicago and Alton Railroad in 1858 was the catalyst for evenmore growth.

Today, you can tour this historic area by foot, bicycle, or car. Through the extensive efforts of the community, its government, and various associations, you will see everything from simple cottages of the past canal workers to the cream-colored limestonearchitectural works such as the Gaylord and Norton buildings, appearing just as they did in the 1800s.

The importance of the Illinois & Michigan Canal and Lockport to the economic vitality of Illinois cannot be overstated. As a directwaterway link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River, the canal cemented Chicago’s domination over St. Louis as the centerof Midwestern trade and thereby, Lockport’s legacy as the “City that made Chicago famous.”

Since the days of shipping on the canal, Lockport has progressed to become a city of the future while still embracing its rich past.

A combination of retail stores and restaurants, light and medium industry, and an abundance of activities, events and celebrations are new attractions in the dynamic community. Lockport truly is a City of Historic Pride with goals that will create an even brighter future.

Community ties unite local businesses in Lockport

W

hen Paul and Chrissy Ivnik began searching for the right location for their new brewery they considered several suburbs but Paul said there was only one right location.

He wanted to come home to Lockport, where he grew up and where past generations of his family called home.

To live and work in Lockport is to know a community that truly cares for each other as seen in the support for its schools and sports teams to the dedication to its businesses.

For the Ivnik family, it wasn’t just a great location to open a business, Nik & Ivy Brewing Company, but a place where the family could plant their roots to become a part of the community. They moved their family, opened a business during the challenges of 2020 and invited the community to celebrate its one year anniversary in 2021.

“We love living here,” Paul Ivnik said. “I feel more connected to the community now that we have a business here.”

Opening a business during the uncertainties of 2020 isn’t for the faint of heart, but Paul Ivnik said he had great support from the city and fellow business community from allowing outside space to be used for customers and tables to customers coming out to try the new business.

Lockport is a place where businesses help each other. Paul Ivnik collaborated with local Lockport businesses to provide food service to his brewery, so customers hungry for wings, barbeque or pasta can order and have food delivered hot and ready to their table at the brewery.

While locals know and love their city, Lockport

is also a destination that draws visitors each day, whether it’s to see the historic sites, shop and visit the local businesses and of course it’s dining scene too. Each day Marguerite Ruminski welcomes guests from near and far to dine at Vegan Café. The café has been a part of Lockport for 11 years and the last eight years under Ruminski’s management when she went from dedicated customer to owner.

“I feel in love with the place. I thought the food was great,” Ruminski said.

In addition to being a completely vegan café, which means no meats or dairy, the temperature of the fruits and vegetables never rises beyond 110 degrees, allowing for the maximum use of the foods vitamins and nutrition, Ruminski said.

Like many of her customers, she came to the café not sure what to expect and with the first bites discovered a delicious meal that incorporates flavors from around the world. Try the Thai spring rolls, a pizza made without cheese and one of the top picks, nachos. There are fresh juices made daily and satisfying salads, desserts so good, you won’t want to share when you order her loved nocheese cheesecake.

“People are blown away then they take that first bite,” she said.

And then there are the customers that seek out the café specifically for its vegan practices.

Ruminski said she loves when visitors come from a far and she can help them find other places to visit while they enjoy an afternoon in Lockport.

The first time Tim Gaba came to Lockport, it wasn’t his idea of fun. His mom had moved them to the community to try and steer him

out of trouble and he wasn’t thrilled with the idea. A football coach at Lockport Township High School saw the potential in him.

“He took me under his wings and helped lift me up,” Gaba said.

Playing with one of the best high school football teams in the state changed Gaba and helped cement his dedication to the community. When he decided he wanted to open his own business, he knew there was only one place.

“I knew I wanted to come back to Lockport,” Gaba said.

In 2015 he launched Perfect Shape Fitness, where he utilizes personal and group training programs, fitness classes and weight training to help his customers feel healthy, strong. He offers programs for adults as well as classes for youth and teens.

For his customers, it’s more than a place to exercise and work up a sweat.

“So many friendships have been built in this gym,” Gaba said. “They share recipes, talk about their families, their work and they look forward to seeing each other.”

And for Gaba, it’s more than just a business that grounds him in the community. He is involved in the community from serving a term as the Lockport Chamber of Commerce President to serving as a coach since 2012 for the high school’s lacrosse team.

“It’s something about the traditions built in this community,” Gaba said. “People stick together and there is a sense of belonging.

This is a town that really cares, that really comes together and that’s what I really love about it.”

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP EMERGENCY SERVICES

P

lease allow me to briefly introduce myself. My name is Rich Harang, I was appointed Chief of the Lockport Police Department on August 16, 2021. I have been employed with this great city for the past 23 years and have worked just about every aspect of the police department moving up within the department through numerous ranks and assignments. I have 25 total years of experience in law enforcement and have attended both the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command and the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy (Class #273) in Quantico, Virginia. It truly is an honor and a privilege to serve the Lockport Community and work alongside the great men and women of the Lockport Police Department.

Currently, the Lockport Police Department consists of 39 sworn officers and is made up of the following: 25 officers assigned to the Patrol Division, 2 officers assigned to the Community

Outreach Unit, 3 detectives assigned to the Investigations Division, 4 Patrol Sergeants, 1 Administrative Sergeant, 1 Investigations Commander, 1 Patrol Commander, 1 Deputy Chief and myself as the Chief of Police. We also have two officers assigned to specialized units detached from the agency, as well as many officers who have specialized training and/or are assigned (on a part-time basis) to specialty teams here in Will County. We are also part of the Will/ Grundy Major Crimes Task Force and ILEAS (Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System) teams.

The Lockport Police Department serves the City of Lockport, which covers a geographical area consisting of 11.56 square miles with a current population of 26,094. During 2021, our police personnel responded to 21,837 calls for police service.

Our agency also has the ability to offer further assistance in several areas outside of the everyday police service that we provide 24/7. One service in particular we provide is CRASE (Civilian

Response to Active Shooter Events) training.

Our department is fortunate enough to have instructors who are certified to teach this course, so please feel free to reach out to the Lockport Police Department should you have questions or are interested in this training. We can also assist in other areas, such as: • Drug dependency and/or addiction.

• Elderly services assistance.

• Domestic violence victim assistance.

• Emergency Tracking Program (CARE TRAK) Alzheimer’s, Autism, Dementia.

T

he Lockport Township Fire Protection District covers an area of 46 square miles, protecting 85,000 residents within the Cities of Lockport, Crest Hill, Romeoville, New Lenox and unincorporated Will County. The Fire District has (6) strategically located stations, with a daily minimum staffing of 26 professional firefighter/paramedics operating (5) ALS Engines, (1) ALS Ladder Truck, (6) ALS Ambulances and (1) Command vehicle as frontline apparatus. LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP PARK DISTRICT

A

new addition to the Lockport Township Park District this past year is three new indoor golf simulators at Prairie Bluff Public Golf Club located at 19433 Renwick Rd. in Crest Hill. The golf simulators calculate the metrics of both ball and club data to improve one’s game and overall performance. It is one of the best ways to improve your game throughout the winter months. The simulators are available seven days per week through March 2022.

As you may or may not know, Dellwood Park is one of the largest parks in the Lockport Township Park District and serves the communities of Lockport, Crest Hill, Romeoville, Joliet and Homer Glen. Beyond the residents it serves, Dellwood Park is a regional draw to neighboring communities.

The population density of Lockport Township is 1,941 persons per square mile according to the 2017 census.

Dellwood Park spans over 150 acres and includes stunning natural features. It is

teeming with visitors and the Park District wanted to redevelop and improve the amenities available while adding new elements to expand and enhance the potential for recreation. Because of this, the Lockport Township Park District was able to secure an “Open Space Lands Acquisition & Development Grant” (OSLAD Grant) from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The Park District’s goals included the following: adding a picnic shelter and multi-use plaza for special events and community use, replacing the central 24 year-old playground, and adding a garden to display the beauty of native plants and include play pods and interpretive signage. Improvements also included replacing the 30 year old, two miles of pathway, parking lot renovations, drinking fountain replacement, installing new outdoor fitness equipment, and adding the district’s first gaga ball pit.

These improvements to Dellwood Park aimed to enhance park-goers’ experiences, draw

more residents into the park for recreation and special events, and expand opportunities for physical activity and community gathering.

The new recreation element like a gaga ball pit encourages residents to use the park and improves the experience of residents who already use it for recreation. The new shelter and multi-use plaza will improve community events, welcome new events and encourage residents to enjoy the park for a longer stay.

Safety is also an important consideration for play equipment and replacing the 24 year old playground improves safety for the younger community members who play on it. A new native garden complements existing gardens while highlighting the ornamental features of native perennials and grasses.

The Park District received a $400,000 grant to fund these improvements at Dellwood Park.

These new amenities at Prairie Bluff and Dellwood Park will draw more residents and enhance their visits as they stay active and enjoy nature.

GALLERY SEVEN is located in the historic Gaylord Building in Lockport, Illinois. Established in 2007 by its cooperative partners, the goal of the gallery is to provide a venue and foundation for local artists to display, sell, and promote art in the community. Quality two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks by local artisans are offered to the Illinois and Michigan Heritage Corridor community and beyond.

Eight cooperative partners curate and display visual art works on the second and third oors of the National Historically Registered Gaylord Building. Additional items are created by many local area artists in a variety of styles, subject matter, and media, including oils, watercolors, photography, textiles, ceramics, works in wood and glass, mixed-media creations, and jewelry. Changing exhibitions by local artists are displayed each month.

GALLERY SEVEN hosts two annual juried art exhibitions. Open Lens (June) is an exhibition open to all international photographers, and IlliArt (October) displays the talents of artists working in all mediums from Illinois.

Historic Pride Illinois is the nation's most populous inland state. Its successful growth is due in large part to the Illinois and Michigan Canal, a revolutionary development that linked the Great Lakes to the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. The I&M Canal was vital to the development of the great City of Chicago and to the economic development of the Midwest; the Canal also fostered the growth of the small settlement that became the City of Lockport. The beautiful Des Plaines River Valley was a portage site for the Des Plaines River for the Miami and Potawatomi, and famed explorers Joliet and Marquette traversed the region on their journeys.

 GAYLORD BUILDING • 200 W. 8th Street More than 170 years ago, the Gaylord Building played a major role in the creation of the I&M Canal. Today the building serves as a gateway to the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor.

Explore the building’s canal exhibits, and enjoy a meal at the Public Landing Restaurant.  HERITAGE VILLAGE • 249 W. 2nd Street Maintained by the Will County Historical Society, this open-air museum features a historic schoolhouse built in 1856, the Wabash Railroad Depot (Symerton) built in 1881 and a smokehouse which was operational for more than a century.  ILLINOIS STATE MUSEUM • 201 W. 10th Street One of only four state museums in Illinois featuring rotating exhibits highlighting the art and visual culture of Illinois. The Illinois State Museum is housed in the historic Norton Building along the I&M Canal.  LINCOLN LANDING • 309 Dell Park Avenue Spectacular open air park and museum. Sharing the I&M Canal lines with a statue of Lincoln contemplating the canal. Bronze medallions are placed with historical information.  WILL COUNTY HISTORIC SOCIETY 803 State Street In 1972, the building was recognized by the National Park Service with a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This building is part of the I&M Canal National Heritage Area.
