SCHIMMER AUTOMOTIVE FAMILY HAS EIGHT DECADES OF EXPERIENCE

From manual transmission to vehicles that can self-park, in the past 80 years, the evolution of vehicles has been incredible. Just as remarkable is the story of a small business that has grown into a legacy in the Illinois Valley as Schimmer Automotive Family celebrates its 80th anniversary.

At the heart of the story is family. Those who launched the business and those who are dedicated to seeing it thrive for another 80 years, said Director of Operations Dan Winterrose.

Winterrose leads operations along with his father-in-law, President and Dealer Principal Jeff Schimmer, a third generation of Schimmer owners who has served at the helm of the business for more than 41 years.

“We are a family business,” Winterrose said.

Dan and Tori (Schimmer) Winterrose joined the Schimmer Automotive Family in 2024, bringing their fresh approach and commitment in supporting the long-time business operations in the Illinois Valley.

Whether it’s helping a customer purchase their first or final vehicle, handling routine maintenance or unexpected repairs, the Schimmer Automotive Family’s sales, finance, service, and administrative staff

represent decades of experience spread across its locations, Schimmer Chevrolet in Mendota, Mendota Ford, Spring Valley Ford, Schimmer Ford of Peru and Schimmer Hyundai in Peru. In 2020, the Schimmer family launched the Schimmer Truck Center, providing sales and support of Medium Duty trucks, flatbeds, low cab forward, and more.

Auto buying looks far different than when the first dealership opened in 1945. The business started with Harry Schimmer, who operated a garage and service station in West Brooklyn, Illinois. He moved to the corner of Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue in Mendota to launch an auto dealership selling Pontiacs.

While styles and features under the hood continue to change, the one constant in eight decades is the dedication to service from the family owned-and-operated automotive Family. Through the years, the Schimmer Automotive Family has added more makes and models, locations, and services, while always maintaining a commitment to service.

“These deep roots are something we want to keep,” Dan Winterrose said. “We want to keep the individual, small feel. We are a professional

business that treats our customers the way we would want to be treated. Providing a great experience.”

Car shopping has moved from wandering the car lot to scrolling on a phone to view styles and features. Today, customers can even create a customized vehicle down to the seat color and features using a kiosk inside the dealerships, Dan Winterrose said.

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the Schimmer Automotive Family continues to provide outstanding service for customers.

“Our service and parts staff are essential to the success of the business, and they’re often staff members who get overlooked,” Tori (Schimmer) Winterrose said. “Everyone knows that dealing with car problems can be a stressful

and unpleasant experience, but at Schimmer’s, it’s important to us that this process is as straightforward, timely, and stress-free as possible.”

For the Schimmer Automotive Family, it’s about the generations of customers and generations of its team members, too. This year, Tori and Dan welcomed their daughter, the next generation in the family’s community legacy.

The Best of the Illinois Valley. Now in its second year, is a yearround celebration that recognizes the very best businesses, people, and places in the Illinois Valley. The people have spoken, and it’s time once again to celebrate the 2025 Best of the Illinois Valley Awards!

CAR WASH (AUTOMATED)

Mr. Sparkle Auto Spa

MR. SPARKLE’S EXCITING FIRST FIVE YEARS

Charlie Trovero knew he had a solid business model and industry-leading services when he opened Mr. Sparkle Auto Spa in 2020.

With the five-year anniversary of the 1040 16th St. Peru location in November, Trovero weighed in on the half-a-decade journey and the Illinois Valley’s support.

“It has been spectacular. I couldn’t be happier with how far we’ve come in the last five years,” said Trovero, who began to dream of opening an auto spa in 2018. “The fifth year has been the best year for us. Hopefully, we can continue to build on it year after year.”

Mr. Sparkle allows its customers to choose either a quick wash, which takes less than three minutes, or they can choose to spend more time utilizing the 27 free vacuums and mat cleaner.

When asked what he thinks earns Mr. Sparkle votes in the Best of the Illinois Valley competition, Trovero doesn’t hesitate with his answer.

“I think our staff makes a huge difference. We try to make sure we greet every single guest who comes to the pay stations,” Trovero said. “We try to explain the difference between the washes to make sure we can not only set expectations but make sure we’re putting them in the best wash for them.

“We make sure we say please and thank you because they go a long way. I think that’s what sets us apart, along with having, in my opinion, the best facility in the area,” Trovero added.

Trovero is always advocating for the next new thing at Mr. Sparkle.

“We’re constantly tweaking things.

Throughout the year chemical wise, you always have to make changes depending on what you expect on the roadways,” Trovero said. “Also, the way you treat bugs and the way you treat winter road grime are different. We’re always cognizant of those things. We’re always making sure the wash is being maintained properly and that it’s being cleaned.

“One of the biggest upgrades this year is we added towel valets. We added free microfiber towels as well as free glass cleaner. It has been a huge hit,” Trovero said.

A beautiful evening at Mr. Sparkle Auto Spa!

MAZE LUMBER HAS THRIVED FOR 177 YEARS

Building professionals and homeowners know where to go for quality when they are working on a project in the Illinois Valley –Maze Lumber Company in Peru.

It’s no surprise that readers voted for Maze Lumber in the Best of the Illinois Valley competition. It has been helping generations of families with their home needs.

Maze Lumber has been a part of the community for 177 years, providing top-quality building materials and construction services for generations.

“Thank you to all of our wonderful customers for voting for Maze Lumber,” said Maze Operations Manager Andrew Kreofsky. “We wouldn’t be here without you, and we look forward to continuing to be your favorite local building materials supplier.”

Beyond the lumber yard, customers can shop inside the modern showroom boasting 15,000 square feet of beautiful displays of the latest products to inspire home designs and renovations.

Each member of the Maze Lumber team, from the helpful professional sales associates to its designers, understands the importance of great customer service through every step of a project. From a modest lumber yard to a modern, full-service provider of building materials, the fifth and sixth generations of the Maze family continue the tradition of their ancestors.

Financial Plus Credit Union

FINANCIAL PLUS CREDIT UNION VALUES ITS HARD-WORKING STAFF

Since 1951, Financial Plus Credit Union has served the Illinois Valley and surrounding communities with financial services. It was an honor to have readers choose Financial Plus Credit Union as the Best Credit Union, Financial Institution, and Mortgage Lender, said Chief Marketing Officer Lee Wilkins. As a credit union, the team at Financial Plus makes service a top priority, whether through in-person banking at one of its five locations or online banking any time, day or night.

Having a trusted voice to answer member questions is a priority, Wilkins explained. When Financial Plus opened a call center to fill that need, it made the decision to staff the call center with existing credit employees to provide the most helpful call response possible.

“We chose to use a pool of existing employees who already know our services and understand our members’ needs,” Wilkins said.

At Financial Plus Credit Union, it’s not unusual for staff to spend most of their career with the institution. Wilkins said several team members can boast of having worked for the credit union for multiple decades, even a few with 30 or more years. The current CEO Peter Fauth started with the credit union as a teller, working his way through the ranks of the credit union leadership.

Having a familiar face at the credit union locations is important to the members. Financial Plus Credit Union has served multiple generations of families, providing financial services for every stage of life.

“We believe in personal service to help members with every aspect possible for their financial well-being,” Wilkins said.

Financial Plus Credit Union opened its first institution in 1951, serving union employees of Libbey Owens Ford Glass Company as the Glass Workers Credit Union. In 1988, it became Financial Plus Credit Union, as it changed to a community charter.

Today, it has more than 45,000 members. Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in their 10-county field of membership with locations in Ottawa, Peru, Mendota, Morris, and Diamond.

Financial Plus offers financial services for all ages and needs, including programs for the youngest members with their Wiley Wabbit Club for newborns through age 9, as well as the TNT Club for ages 10 through 19. Financial Plus Credit Union also offers financial literacy education for all ages, including classroom presentations for schools to provide financial literacy to students.

The staff at Financial Plus Credit Union is committed to giving back. In 2025, they will participate in over 90 events, dedicating nearly 1,500 volunteer hours to support the local community through hands-on help at events and meaningful assistance to organizations in need.

“Giving back to our communities and members is an important part of what we do to see our communities succeed,” Wilkins said.

BEST PET BOARDING

Loch Countryside Kennel

LOCH COUNTRYSIDE KENNEL, A KENNEL FILLED WITH LOVE

With its latest Best of the Illinois Valley award, Loch Countryside Kennel is an 11time award-winning kennel.

“I have been in business for 14 years with the most loyal customers from the Illinois Valley. I can honestly say that they 100 percent trust me with their fur babies, and that means everything to me,” Laura Loch, owner of Loch Countryside Kennel, said.

Loch thinks her customers love her kennel because they can see how much their pets mean to her.

“I have taken care of dogs as young as 4 months old with my required vaccines and as old as 18. I have boarded dogs through the years with cancer, heart disease, liver/ kidney issues, and dogs that need antibiotics. The only thing that I’m unable to do at my facility would be to give shots for anything such as diabetes,” she said. “I don’t discriminate when it comes to age or illness. I have a heart of gold, and I treat my customers’ fur babies as if they were my own.”

As Loch Countryside Kennel’s reputation has spread, so has its customer base.

“I do get customers from Peoria, Chicago, and out of state, but nothing beats the loyalty from my customers in the Illinois Valley. I truly put my heart and soul into my kennel, which is why I schedule far out in advance because my customers want to make sure that I’m the only person taking care of their dogs,” Loch said.

Loch’s success is especially remarkable considering that when she first moved to the Illinois Valley, she didn’t have any experience running a kennel, and she had no ties to the area. She had to rely on her people skills, hard work, and pure passion for dogs to build a successful business from the ground up.

As a pet lover, Loch takes great joy in making a difference in her clients’ lives. She knows that leaving their beloved pets behind can make her customers anxious, and she works hard to ease their minds and give pets top-notch care when they can’t be with their loved ones.

Part of caring for people’s pets includes safeguarding them from other potentially aggressive dogs. Loch is selective about the dogs she accepts, and if there is any sign of aggression, she won’t allow a dog to stay at her kennel because she won’t endanger the pets she watches.

She appreciates the support her customers have shown her business over the years.

“I would like to thank each and every customer for their amazing loyalty to me and my kennel. That means everything to me. I am always here to take care of your sweet dogs, whether it’s for an exciting vacation, a time to spend with family, or for medical issues,” Loch said.

Town & Country Services

Town & Country Services opened in 1919 and has long been a fixture in the Illinois Valley. It’s family-owned and operated, and Town & Country’s president, Bob Goskusky, was the fourth generation of the family to take over and his son, Joe Goskusky, is the fifth generation currently involved.

“We’re very grateful for how long we’ve been here and how long we’ve been successful. I took over for my folks years ago,” Bob Goskusky said. “I’m lucky to have my son taking the torch and carrying it forward. He’s been with us since he was in high school. He started off sweeping floors, then he was a plumber, and now he’s in the office 50 hours a week.

“This wasn’t my original plan.

I went to college and got a degree in biology. I was looking in a different direction. As things worked out, I came back to help my dad for a short time. It just worked out that I took on the challenge of working for him. He semi-retired shortly after, and that’s when I really stepped in,” he said.

The staff is a key reason for the success of Town & Country Services.

“It’s all about our people, our staff. They are the faces people recognize as Town & Country Services,” Bob Goskusky said. “They are who keep the customers calling and grow the business. They keep the customers happy. Our motto is, ‘Doing whatever it takes,’ and they truly, each and every one

of them, follow the motto.

“It’s in our name, Town & Country, so we serve all of the local cities and villages in LaSalle, Bureau, and Putnam counties. We do venture out a little further in all directions

occasionally. The country part, we specialize in country services such as well work and septic systems,” he said.

Town & Country Services provides plumbing, heating, cooling, and electric services.

Grasser’s Plumbing and Heating

GRASSER’S PLUMBING AND HEATING, A TRUSTED NAME FOR HOMEOWNERS

For generations, Grasser’s Plumbing and Heating has been the company that homeowners facing emergencies have called. Grasser’s has plumbers and HVAC technicians who can perform emergency repairs at any time of the day or night. Grasser’s is also well known for their knowledge as bathroom and kitchen specialists.

Holly Lynch, who works on a team with six family members, said the whole staff at Grasser’s were happy to hear their customers had honored them with awards.

“We all feel incredibly honored and blessed to receive Best Of in two areas and One of the Best in four areas,” Lynch said.  Lynch said people appreciate doing business with a familyowned business that puts its customers first.

“Grasser’s is and has always been a local family-owned business. Grasser’s began with my grandfather, and his legacy has continued with my father (Gary Grasser) and my uncle (Jack Grasser). Gary and Jack have always worked extremely hard to provide reliable, efficient, and affordable services to their customers. They truly care about each and every customer, as well as all of their employees,” Lynch said.

“Gary and Jack are two of the most humble men you will meet, and they know Grasser’s has grown because of their skilled, hardworking employees and loyal customers, and this is not something that they take for granted. Often, when one of our customers has a problem, it is an emergency. And the most important concern is getting that problem resolved in a timely manner. And our customers know they can count on Grasser’s to get to them quickly, and resolve that emergency promptly,” she added.

Grasser’s is always happy to help its customers, and the company is thankful for all the support they’ve received throughout the years.

“We want to thank you for your continued loyalty and trusting our Grasser team with your work. At Grasser’s, we are constantly working to improve our products and services to meet the changing market and needs of our customers. We recently remodeled our showrooms so that you have a local place to go to where you can touch and feel your fixtures before making a purchase. We also go through regular training and quality control meetings to stay on top of the latest products and technology, as well as improving our service work/installation,” Lynch said.  Lynch shared a message to Grasser’s customers on behalf of all the Grasser’s family members who work at the company: Gary, Jack, Mike, Brad, Holly, Heather, and Chris.

“We value you. We appreciate you. And most of all, we thank you,” she said.

I went back thinking I needed to have Beth increase the volume but she replaced the microscopic filters that were dirty due to working outside and gave me the supplies necessary to do it on my own as needed. She explains everything in detail and showed me how. I can’t imagine life without the hearing aids and her professional expertise.”

Wallace Center for Hearing offers an extensive range of services, such as diagnostic hearing testing, newborn hearing testing, wax removal, tinnitus evaluations, hearing aids, and hearing protection.

Since the Wallace Center for Hearing employees work hard to help their patients, they were thrilled to learn their patients acknowledged and appreciated their efforts enough to honor them with an award.

“We are honored to be named the Best of the Illinois Valley area Audiologist/Hearing Care Clinic. We work hard every day to be the best of the best and to provide exceptional hearing healthcare. We couldn’t be happier knowing that the community appreciates us and what we do. We love what we do and are so glad it shows,” Wallace said.

Wallace thanked her patients for showing their continued support.

“We thank them for allowing us the opportunity to assist them with their hearing healthcare. It is our pleasure to be able to help them hear better and live better. We look forward to providing our patients and future patients with exceptional hearing healthcare for many years to come,” she said.

Cody Burroughs State Farm

LAID-BACK ENVIRONMENT BOOSTS CODY BURROUGHS STATE FARM OFFICES TO SUCCESS

It didn’t take Cody Burroughs long to find his second career after finishing his tour as a sergeant in the United States Army in 2009. By September of the same year, he was selling insurance for State Farm.

By April 2012, he had opened his own office, Cody Burroughs – State Farm Insurance Agent, at 313 S. Spalding St. in Spring Valley. His second office was opened 10 years later in June 2022, at 362 3rd St. in LaSalle.

When asked what has made him successful, Burroughs can answer in one word – relationships.

“The world is moving so quickly toward A.I., technology, and a hands-off approach toward everything, including insurance,” said Burroughs, who attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale before enlisting in the service. “I don’t think the Illinois Valley is ready to make the jump as quickly as big cities. I personally think it takes the personal relationships away from my customers and I.

I handle more claims personally out of our office than any other insurance agent in the area. If a customer has a problem with a vehicle, we take pictures and upload them into our system. If we have customers

that have roof damage, we get on the roof,” he said. “I think this has reduced the number of cancellations that go out of my offices because people know we’re doing everything we can to make sure they’re being taken care of.”

Not only do positive relations affect the customer base, but also his team of agents. Actually, Burroughs may say it starts with the team because they can pass positive or negative vibes to the clientele.

“Let’s be honest, insurance isn’t exactly fun. No one wants to do it. The last thing anyone wants to do is deal with insurance,” Burroughs said. Every day is a struggle to keep your team happy because insurance is stressful and it isn’t exactly fun. We create an environment at work where both offices are laid back.

“I think you have to have a laid-back,

easy-going mentality in insurance. When it’s time to get down to business, it’s time to get down to business, and there are things you have to do every day,” he said. “But, on a team aspect, the customers pick up on how happy the employees are, and it has carried over to both of our offices.”

Both offices offer the same services, such as free quotes on auto, home, health, and life insurance, assistance with state-to-state transfers, and creation of a personal price plan.

“We appreciate all of the business, we have or have had, equally, and we’re always trying to get business back and keep business. I appreciate winning the Best of Illinois Valley competition, and I don’t take it lightly,” Burroughs said.

BEST ORTHODONTIST Premier Orthodontics

INDIVIDUALIZED CARE AT PREMIER ORTHODONTICS

Care that’s tailored to each patient’s need is at the heart of Premier Orthodontics. Going above and beyond for patients earned the practice with offices in Peru and Ottawa the Best of the Illinois Valley Best Orthodontics award.

“We really appreciate it,” said Amy Twardowski, a member of the Premier Orthodontics team. “It’s so nice to have people appreciate the care you give. We work really hard to give the best care to our community.”

For more than 40 years, Premier Orthodontics has provided orthodontic care for the residents of the Illinois Valley. Dr. Curtis Imel started the practice in 1982 in Ottawa. At the small office where he started to grow the practice and when moving to a larger space and adding a second office, Dr. Imel always maintained providing the best care for individuals, whether they were tweens, teens, or adults seeking orthodontic care.

High-quality orthodontic treatment can have a positive effect on one’s life, improving one’s appearance and quality of life. Dr. Imel continues to stay educated on the latest aspects of orthodontics.

Dr. Imel started his career with orthodontic specialty training at Loyola University. While in the Army and stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri, he served as the general dentist. He completed his doctorate in dental surgery at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry.

Today, Dr. Imel shares the practice with Dr. Noor Alshaikh, who, in addition to earning the highest score in her class on the American Board Exam, has extensive experience in treatments including conventional braces and clear aligners. Dr. Alshaikh cares for patients of all ages and said her favorite aspect of her work is the relationships she builds with her patients throughout treatments.

“The doctors really love what they do,” Twardowski said.

Premier Orthodontics has offices in Ottawa and Peru, with the doctors traveling between the two offices to care for patients. The doctors and staff make it a priority to take time with each patient, building trust and confidence. At the same time, they work efficiently, minimizing patient wait times. The team at Premier Orthodontics understands patient care and comfort are a top priority.

The field of orthodontics has a main focus on improving the alignment of one’s teeth and correcting the bite. At Premier Orthodontics, the team takes time with each patient to understand each case and treatment goal. Orthodontic care isn’t just for tweens and teens; today’s practice provides care to a wide range of ages, including many adults, Twardowski said.

The team at Premier Orthodontics understands this care is an investment in one’s health and takes the time to help patients understand the treatment process and all the available options, from the first consultation and throughout the treatment.

BEST Auditorium Ballroom

Event Venue

AUDITORIUM BALLROOM OFFERS A UNIQUE VENUE

Auditorium Ballroom clearly has found supportive customers – it has once again been selected as Best Event Venue during the Best of the Illinois Valley voting.

Auditorium Ballroom isn’t the first of owner and developer Mike Bird’s projects to be successful. He is a licensed contractor who has worked on many buildings throughout the Illinois Valley. However, in terms of how much people love it, it may be his most popular.

“When I took over the building, a venue for weddings and special occasions seemed like the right idea because of the high ceilings, the history, the artistry, the space, and the downtown location,” Bird said. “I didn’t know how popular or successful it would be until I opened the doors, and the bookings haven’t slowed down from year to year. It’s a testament to the building, the staff, the clients, and the importance of having just the right atmosphere for a special day or night.”

The Auditorium Ballroom, located at 109 Wright St. in LaSalle, has a long and varied history – it used to be a car dealership, a stage for performers such as Louis Armstrong, and a place where military uniforms were sewn during World War II. It features an eloquent lobby with a magnificent bar, offering a wow factor from the moment guests step in.

After walking up the showcase staircase, used for many homecoming, prom, and other special occasion photo opportunities, visitors will see 10,000 square feet on the second floor. There is an upstairs bar in the north side corner of the space, which can furnish a 300-person event.

With four years of business, the Auditorium Ballroom is more popular than ever, hosting more than 280 events a year. As of now, 2025 is booked, most of 2026, and opportunities to rent the venue are limited in 2027.

An intimate wedding ceremony held at the Auditorium Ballroom, where the couple exchanged vows in front of their guests in a setting that blends historic elegance with modern sophistication. The warm lighting and grand architecture create a memorable and romantic atmosphere for this special moment.

Although the venue is known for its amazing wedding packages, including use of the entire location, a bridal suite (with its own staircase on the north side of the second floor), a stretch H2 Hummer limousine, and a tuxedo return, other events of life’s favorite moments take place at the ballroom.

The Auditorium Ballroom has hosted St. Bede Academy’s prom, business dinners and conferences, training sessions, and more.

One of Bird’s favorite aspects of his endeavor is the community involvement.

“It’s definitely been great to bring people to downtown LaSalle and to the Illinois Valley,” Bird said. “The Auditorium Ballroom’s success has been able to help surrounding businesses because of people coming to the location, and we also have partnerships with them. We want to help everyone. We want to see our community succeed in any way it can.”

A joyful moment as the bride and groom cut their wedding cake at the Auditorium Ballroom, a venue that adds a touch of historic charm and elegance to their celebration. The warmly lit, grand ballroom lled with guests provides a perfect backdrop for this special occasion.

A heartfelt moment during the wedding ceremony at the Auditorium Ballroom, where the couple stands before exposed brick walls and arched windows that enhance the venue's historic charm and romantic ambiance. The natural light streaming in adds to the warmth and elegance of this special day.

This showcases a beautifully arranged table at a wedding held in the historic Auditorium Ballroom, featuring an elegant centerpiece with tall white feathers and luxurious gold accents that perfectly complement the venue's timeless charm.

City of La Salle

CITY OF LA SALLE, UNITING THE COMMUNITY

Providing paths that bring the community together is the theme for the City of La Salle, which won multiple Best of the Illinois Valley awards.

For Deputy City Clerk Brent Bader, the honors demonstrate the appreciation the community has for the opportunities to come together in all seasons in La Salle.

The La Salle Veterans Memorial Pool is where the community gathers to splash and cool off on hot summer days. With swimming lessons and lap swims, it also has a splash pad, pool slide, and diving board. The concession area is stocked, and a window on the park side serves those at the sports fields. The pool hosts birthday parties for all ages and can be rented out for larger events, Bader said.

Rotary Park encompasses 250 acres with areas for active play and quiet reflection. As the park has developed, the city leaders have asked the community for feedback on the amenities

in the park. Community interest spurred city leaders to add six lighted pickleball courts, which opened this spring.

Near the pickleball courts is the new outdoor exercise facility, funded in part through a grant from the National Fitness Campaign, as well as funding from the state and a grant from insurance company Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. Visitors can scan a QR code on the signs near the facility to learn how to use the seven pieces of equipment and enjoy an outdoor fitness routine.

In 2024, an 18 hole disc golf course opened in Rotary Park and it has become a top destination in the park. The course, named The Quarry, was designed by avid disc golfers Wes Black, Dan Nagle and Professional Dana Vicich.

“It’s a very challenging course and we’re very proud to have put it in,” Bader said. “People travel from all over to play the course.”

Along with an accessible playground, a dog park, and sports fields, Rotary Park also offers a chance to step into nature with its walking

path to Prairie Lake.

“You can feel disconnected from the rest of the world, and it has some of the best views, especially at sunrise and sunset,” Bader said. The park offers something for all seasons, but takes on a special feel with the annual Celebration of Lights each November and December. This year, the display will open Nov. 9, the day after the Run Run Rudolph 5K Fun Run/Walk.

What started as a small, drive-through holiday lights display 13 years ago has grown into one of the largest lights displays in the region.

Bader said that, through local business sponsorships, the lights display has grown, along with donations from the community and visitors. Volunteers welcome guests to the lights display and collect donations. The Facebook page LaSalleLights includes all the details for the display.

“It’s pretty impressive to see how much we can accomplish when the community comes together to work collectively,” Bader said.

BEST DENTIST A Lifetime of Smiles

IMPROVING LIVES WITH A LIFETIME OF SMILES

The mission statement of A Lifetime of Smiles is simple, and it’s something every single patient who comes to the office, located at 2424 Chartres St. in LaSalle, can expect.

“It’s fulfilling our vision, which is improving people’s lives through dentistry. That’s what we’re all about,” said office manager Chauntel Hauter. “We’re not about pushing treatment and focusing on the dollar. It’s all about improving people’s lives through dentistry. If patients are calling with pain and discomfort, we’re seeing them the same day. We’re not telling them it’s going to be six weeks out.”

A Lifetime of Smiles is a full service dental office. Whether

it’s an emergency or during a regular checkup, procedures such as cleanings, root canals, crowns, veneers, extractions, implants, teeth whitening, wisdom teeth removal, and orthodontia (including Invisalign and traditional braces) are performed at the office every day.

Through her time with A Lifetime of Smiles, Hauter has seen services expand, as well as the staff to do them.

“When I started five years ago, we had two doctors, two hygienists. We were coming off of COVID-19, so I’d say our team had eight or nine,” Hauter said. “Now, I have a team of 25 with four onsite doctors and hygienists. We have extended

hours, so we’re able to help patients after work.

“We just want to continue to expand and to continue to have opportunities to help out the community. We partner with different organizations and volunteer at different community events. We want to make sure we’re as involved in the community as we can,” Hauter said.

The four doctors are Dr. Ed Monroe, Dr. Pat Wendling, Dr. Kenn Li, and Dr. Jay Lee.

Dr. Ed is skilled in implants and overdenture placement.

One of his favorite parts of the job is celebrating a patient’s forever smile with a champagne toast and a dance party.

Patients love to see the

team dressed up for a theme day. Team members come to work early for yoga classes on Wellness Wednesday. Plus, there’s always plenty of fun to have on Bingo Tuesday.

A Lifetime of Smiles, which has welcomed new patients during each of its 26 years of operation, features eight patient suites, state-of-theart equipment, and the latest procedures in the industry.

ONE OF THE BEST SECOND HAND/RESALE STORE

Habitat ReStore

HABITAT RESTORE HELPS SHOPPERS AND THE COMMUNITY

Readers voted for the store Habitat ReStore in the Best of the Illinois Valley competition, but retail is only part of its story.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Peru sells gently used and new items donated from local corporations and residents. Shoppers can snag great deals while the proceeds from the sales help to support Habitat ReStore’s mission to build new homes in the community.

The 19th home is under construction in Princeton, said Jessica Brayfield, manager of the Habitat ReStore and procurement. The home is for a Princeton family, with four young children, who are eager to move into a home of their own.

While the store helps finance a portion of the home-building costs, it takes teams of volunteers to help construct the new home.

At a recent build day, Brayfield chatted with a volunteer from Sysco, and learned that years ago, he moved into a home built through Habitat for Humanity. Today, he makes time to volunteer and give back.

“It was a full-circle moment at the build site that day,” Brayfield said. “What we do for families is truly a hand-up. We are investing

in people in the community who re-invest right back.”

In each home project, there is a construction manager overseeing and helping the volunteers. Brayfield said there is an urgent need for more volunteers, who can register online or call the store to learn more.

“Our volunteers are priceless,” Brayfield said.

In addition to donations, the store’s volunteers help collect items directly from donor homes. A couch, dining room set, and even large kitchen appliances can be picked up directly from a home and brought to the store. The store’s DeConstruction Team volunteers can help take down sinks, vanities, and kitchen cabinets and bring them to the store.

“It gives the cabinets a new lease on life and keeps it out of the landfill,” Brayfield said. “For the shoppers, they can find items at a fraction of the price and have a kitchen that’s new to them.”

Thanks to generous donations, Habitat ReStore, serving LaSalle, Bureau, and Putnam counties, is able to donate items in the community and in the past year has supported 36 nonprofits, Brayfield said.

“We’re blessed that we’re able to do that,” she said.

BEST Leone’s Polaris

MOTORCYCLE/ ATV DEALER

EMBRACE ADVENTURE AT LEONE’S POLARIS

Leone’s Polaris in Peru takes pride in helping its customers find the right vehicle for every season of life’s adventures. Whether those adventures are out on the trails or cruising the back roads of the Illinois Valley while scouting crops, Leone’s has been helping generations of their customers and their families since 1969.

General manager Brian Leone and his cousin Jason Leone represent the fourth generation of the Leone family at the helm of the Polaris dealership in Peru. They are proud to manage the largest Polaris dealership in the Midwest.

Leone’s Polaris dealership offers new and used ATV, UTV, and snowmobiles, and also provides a full-service department to help maintain and repair powersports vehicles. Customers can find everything they need to enjoy their vehicles with accessories and even trailers.

Managing the largest dealership means going beyond inventory, Brian Leone said. He understands customers travel from miles away to his shop, and he wants it to be an experience.

“We want to create a reason for customers to visit our store,” Brian Leone said.

Inside the showroom, Leone’s customers will find a large display of memorabilia, including some of the first Polaris snowmobiles the shop sold. Those entering the store will see a 1969 Homelite, old Polaris snowmobiles and memorabilia, and even vintage suits from the early 1970s.

The team at Leone’s Polaris understands that customers seek ATVs and UTVs for fun as well as work, and they can help their customers find the right fit – whether it’s heading up north to spend time off-roading or utilizing an all-terrain vehicle to travel around the farm.

Today’s ATV and UTV feature far more options to make the ride comfortable, with models that offer heating and cooling, radios, and navigation systems.

“When you are cruising the north woods in Wisconsin, you can do it in comfort,” Brian Leone said.

Vehicle capabilities have also obviously increased since 1969. Today’s Polaris vehicles can travel on average between 40 to 60 miles per hour – and some (Polaris RZRs) can even reach 80.

Snowmobiles are what helped Leone’s business transition into a dealership. In 1969, when H.J. “Bud” Leone was running the grain elevator and feed mill, a Homelite salesman visited the shop. The story goes that Bud eyed the snowmobile in the salesman’s truck and inquired about purchasing it. When the salesman said he could get a dealer discount if he bought four, Bud said “yes” and sold the extra three to the mailman and two farmers, making them the first Leone’s powersports customers.

Brian Leone said that “when it comes to snowmobiling, it’s

more than a hobby. Those who snowmobile are very passionate about it.”

While the region may be seeing fewer large snowfalls, Brian Leone said many of his customers are willing to travel to enjoy the sport and often take their snowmobiles north to Wisconsin and beyond to enjoy the deep snowfalls and trails. Leone’s customers can be found from the north woods of Wisconsin and Michigan to the mountains of Montana and Wyoming to the beautiful trails of upstate New York, Vermont, and even Maine.

Customers keep tabs on the shop throughout the year on its social media pages. Brian Leone said one of the fan favorites in the winter months is Linda’s Trail Report delivered by his mother, Linda, as she offers trail updates from the locations where she and husband, Jim, are visiting now that they’ve retired from the shop. Brian said the highlight of Jim and Linda’s trips are seeing Leone’s customers out on the trails.

“They love to go snowmobiling almost every day,” he said. “My dad, Jim, has been snowmobiling since 1969, and he won’t be stopping any time soon.”

SALAD BAR STEAKS Prime Quarter

PRIME QUARTER IS THERE FOR EVERY MILESTONE

At Prime Quarter Steak House, guests gather around the charcoal grills, preparing their steaks and sharing stories.

For more than 34 years, guests have enjoyed their weekly dinners and annual celebrations at Prime Quarter Steak House in Princeton. The restaurant invites its guests to take a hands-on approach to select and grill their pick of USDA Choice steak, each hand-cut, or fresh seafood. Diners can also select the salad and baked potato bars to customize their sides, including Texas Toast.

Owner Al Sanger launched his first Prime Quarter restaurant in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1986. He knew of other restaurants offering the same concept, but Sanger said he made it his own.

“I took the concept and ran a little harder,” Sanger said.

Prime Quarter creates a unique dining experience, where conversations flow and new friends are made. Even guests who opt to leave the grilling to the professional chefs will join the fireside activities, said Abbie Mattingly, general manager at the Princeton location.

“When someone walks in for the first time, their eyes go right to the middle of the room at the grills,” Mattingly said. “At the grill, there are great conversations and there’s a sense of community.”

Mattingly has been with the restaurant for 16 years, and she’s performed nearly every role there. In 2021, she was named manager.

“Much of what makes our establishment so successful is our dedicated employees,” Sanger said. “We are very fortunate to have Abbie leading our Prime Quarter team in

Princeton. Her attention to detail, willingness to lend a hand wherever needed, and commitment to customer satisfaction and her Prime Quarter team is exemplary.”

During the peak December nights, the restaurant can welcome more than 400 guests in a single evening, Mattingly said.

“It’s all hands on deck,” she said.

For some guests, Prime Quarter is a restaurant for special occasions, birthdays, anniversaries, and job promotions. For some, it’s part of their weekly routine or date night.

“We love to see our regulars, and we get to know them,” Mattingly said.

The salad bar is a big draw, too, with some guests skipping the entree and heading straight to the salad bar.

“Our salad bar is the best. It’s one of the things we’re known for,” Mattingly said.

Brides travel from across the country to shop at Marien Mae Boutique in downtown LaSalle, finding their perfect dress for their dream day.

“There are so many with ties to the Illinois Valley, even if the bride has moved across the country, they’ll come back to the Illinois Valley to be with their family and find their wedding dress. We’ve had brides from Alaska, California, and Arizona, too,” said Holly Hoover, owner of Marien Mae Boutique.

Outfitting brides from across the country, and having wedding styles that range from backyard celebrations to elegant black-tie affairs, requires carrying a large selection of styles. The team at Marien Mae Boutique works directly with its designers to select a range of styles and prices to fit every wedding budget.

“We carry off-the-rack gowns, or you can customize the dress as you like,” Hoover said. “We carry the world’s leading designers.”

Marien Mae Boutique opened in downtown LaSalle in 2011 with founder Amanda Andreoni. Hoover joined the staff a year later and fell in love with the bridal shop and the opportunity to be a part of her customers’ most special day. In 2017, Hoover said yes to the dress shop and the opportunity to take ownership.

“We want to make our customers’ shopping experience really special because it is one of the most important days of their lives,” Hoover said.

Marien Mae Boutique can dress the entire wedding party, including brides, grooms, mother-of-the-bride, and the bridal party.

“We can help brides with their vision for the wedding party,” Hoover said.

At Marien Mae, the staff can outfit the groom’s party, whether they’re looking to purchase or rent their formal wear, with options for suits and tuxedoes.

“Black tie weddings are on the rise, and we’re seeing more requests for the classic black tuxedo and bowtie look for men,” Hoover said.

“In this area, we have so many venues and they all have a different look, so we want to make sure we have the looks to match the vibe you want for your wedding,” she added.

Wedding dress shopping should start about a year before the wedding, and at least eight months before the big day to allow time to shop, order, and complete necessary alterations, Hoover said.

Beyond the brides, customers seek out Marien Mae Boutique’s special occasion gowns, too, including a selection of ready-towear gowns.

“We have customers attending a gala in the city or traveling for a wedding, and they come in and shop our designer dresses,” Hoover said.

And starting around December, the boutique opens its prom shop, helping customers find the perfect dress or tuxedo for their celebrations.

When a space became available nearby, the team took the opportunity to launch the venue Marien Mae Events, hosting wedding showers, baby showers, birthdays, and anniversary celebrations. The space can also serve as a bridal suite on a wedding day, with private dressing areas, comfortable couches, and plenty of space to gather on the big day.

From the simple online form to book appointments to the inviting and fun shopping experience, the team at Marien Mae Boutique sees their customers as their friends.

“We have such a fun time here,” Hoover said. “We love what we do, and we want to make sure our customers are our friends. We want them to look around at their wedding, seeing everyone looking great. We build relationships. We want our customers to come back with their sisters and friends.”

BEST MAP Quality Fencing & Decks

Deck/Porch; Fencing Local Contracting Company

MAP QUALITY FENCING & DECKS PUTS CUSTOMERS FIRST

For the team at MAP Quality Fencing & Decks, it isn’t a job. It’s about providing clients with a quality solution that will last when it comes to installing decks, fencing, pergolas, and three-season rooms.

“One thing that really separates MAP from other companies is the high level of compassion for our clients,” said co-owner Marty Persich. “We really care about our clients. We really care about them and go above and beyond to make sure they’re 100 percent satisfied with our services.”

It’s the philosophy of putting the customer first and providing a top-rated experience from start to finish that has customers leaving positive reviews and earning the company the awards of Best Local Contracting Company, Best Deck/Porch, and Best Fencing Company.

“We go above and beyond. It’s what we do,” said co-owner Matthew Munson. “We are here to educate and offer the best solution.”

Munson and Persich are Illinois Valley natives who launched their business together six years ago and have earned a reputation for their craftsmanship and their emphasis on communication with the customer throughout the project.

“Our brand and our legacy is on the line,” Munson said.

From fence and deck installation to building a threeseason room, every project is completed to the highest standard. Persich said as a creative person, he enjoys designing projects for clients.

“Making an idea come to life is the best feeling ever, along with the customer’s reactions to them,” Persich said.

For Munson, it’s about the

relationships and being able to educate homeowners about the varying materials and styles.

His goal is to help clients get it right the first time, and that’s why he’s in favor of using vinyl and composite, which offer a beautiful look and durability.

Munson said wood may seem less expensive, but over time, there are costs with staining and replacing pieces that may rot, splinter, and break down.

“It’s not about the price, because what may be cheaper initially can end up costing more over the life of the product,” Munson said.

From providing designs to obtaining permits, the team at MAP Quality Fencing and Decks assists customers at each step. When a client needs a service outside of the team’s expertise, they have referrals to provide reputable services

for items such as tree removals and survey professionals. For Munson, to share a referral is to share someone they would choose for their own home.

“We roll out the red carpet for our customers and make them feel special. We truly appreciate their business,” Munson said.

Munson and Persich met on the football field where their sons played together on the Ottawa Eagles. Munson was coaching, and Persich was a parent helping and supporting the team. Friendship and teamwork are central to the business, as they continue to support the community through athletics and other avenues.

“Community is everything for us,” Munson said.

Munson said the business partners and longtime friends will find themselves at opposite

sides of the football field this season, when their sons compete for two different football teams. This fall, Munson’s son is playing quarterback for the Ottawa Township High School Pirates, and Persich’s son will be the quarterback for LaSalle-Peru Township High School.
