LEMONT – Next month, Lemont High School graduate Allison Jasinski will carry a baton the distance of a marathon in a relay run across the country to combat cancer. Currently a Denver resident, Jasinski is scheduled to run July 9 from Denver to east Colorado. “I know that I can run a marathon, but this is different,” Jasinski said. “It’ll just be me on the Denver roads.” Jasinski will take part in the first Million Dollar Marathon, in which 160 athletes participate in a 4,000-mile relay run that begins in Washington and continues east to Delaware, Jasinski said, spanning 15 states and 500 communities. Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson will show support for the cause by running the Des Moines leg of the relay. Each runner is responsible for raising $7,500 for cancer research and awareness efforts. Funds will be donated to the American Cancer Society, Above + Beyond Cancer, Livestrong and other organizations, according to marathon Program Director Steve Cannon. This is the first marathon relay across the U.S., Cannon said, and the majority of the runners are cancer survivors. Organizers hope the marathon will become an annual

event dedicated to promoting good health and fighting cancer. In preparation for the relay, Jasinski runs five days each week, including a 10- to 20-mile run Sundays. She began running two years ago and has previously completed two marathons. Although she is not a cancer survivor, Jasinski’s life has been touched by the disease. She has seen extended family members and students in her work as a school psychologist affected by the illness. An interest in cancer prevention runs in the Jasinski family. Mary Jasinski, Allison’s mother and a Lemont resident, has participated in several fundraising efforts, including marathons, walks and Relay For Life events. Her family will fly to Denver to cheer her on during the run. “We’re very proud of Allison,” Mary Jasinski said. “It’s very exciting to see her pick up that torch.”

The board unanimously voted down a motion Wednesday to buy 19 laptops for district office administration at an estimated cost of $35,000 in the final month of the fiscal year. The board instead decided to include the purchase in fiscal 2014. “I have no problem approving technology,” board member Brian Bushnell said. “But I’d like to know more.” Board Secretary Patrick Kerrigan questioned the estimated price of the devices, at $1,800 a computer. “It seems a little out of line,” he said. District administrators said $35,000 is an estimate and the final price is expected to be lower. The administration recommended approving the purchase in 2013 because expenditures are less than anticipated and, after the board voted to amend the budget last month, the district is seeing a net revenue increase of $60,000 for the fiscal year. The administrative computers are part of a larger five year, $1.5 million technology plan that includes establishing a device replacement cycle and buying network servers.
The average district student computer is a decade old, administrators said last month. The district estimated spending an average of $333,000 a year on technology during the next five years. The board approved the plan last month, but it is under review. Administration is considering using Heartland Business Systems – a technology support services and equipment company that offers competitive government pricing – to provide the majority of services in the plan. The district has a pre-existing relationship with Heartland and does not intend to take the majority of technology services out to bid, although administrators will seek quotes from other service providers. During public comment, district parents Jenny and Nick Stricker voiced concern about the absence of bids to compete with Heartland. The Strickers said board policy requires competing bids for contracts of more than $25,000, and Heartland’s charges are too high. Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier said the technology plan is among school code exemptions not required for bid.

This is true in my field, which is strategic issues affecting the energy and power industries, because big changes that will affect us all are happening right now. For example: s 7IND AND SOLAR ENERGY ARE THE nation’s fastest-growing energy sources. s -ILLIONS OF SMART METERS and smart grid components are giving us more choices in how we consume electricity. s 7E ARE SAVING MORE GASOLINE every day by driving more hybrid and all-electric vehicles. s .ATURAL GAS IS DRAMATICALLY more inexpensive and in greater supply than just a few years ago. These all are positive developments, but they come with big challenges, because the grid has so many moving parts that it is hard to coordinate them efficiently. 7E HAVE POWER SOURCES from small diesel generators to huge nuclear plants, that send ELECTRICITY OVER MILES OF high-voltage transmission lines TO SUBSTATIONS WHICH SEND it again over 3 million miles of distribution lines to millions of homes, offices and industries. .OW THROW IN THIS COMPLICATION 7E CAN T STORE ELECTRICITY on this scale and release it on demand, but production still has to EQUAL DEMAND 7HEN MILLIONS of us turn on our air conditioners, the extra electricity has to be there right now, and when we turn them off, some power plants have to ramp down. These challenges only will grow as we add more wind and solar energy sources into the mix, because their day-to-day production is

LEMONT – The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Lemont/Homer Glen is a little more than a month away, but publicity and logistic chair Janine Davidson says it is not too late to get involved. Event organizers still are looking for teams, volunteers and cancer survivors to participate in the annual event July 12, at the Lemont High School Sports Complex, 12900 131st St. “Even though we’ve been [organizing the event] since before Christmas, we find the bulk of the teams and the bulk of the participants join the last two months,” Davidson said. For the fundraiser, teams collect donations leading up to the event, when members take turns walking around the track for a 12-hour period. Seventeen teams had registered as of Wednesday. Some teams will hold events during June to raise money from the community. “It gets hard to every year go back to the same person [to ask for donations],” Davidson said.

Autre Monde hits all the right notes with flavor, service BERWYN – Much like the food it serves, Autre Monde Cafe & Spirits is simple, elegant and more than meets the eye. The much-lauded fine dining establishment almost seems out of place in Berwyn. For a meal like this, about your only other option is to head into the city. Still, like everything in Berwyn, Autre Monde feels like a neighborhood joint. My dining companion and I arrived for our evening reservation on a recent Saturday night and were seated right away. We were given glasses of water and just enough time to consider the restaurant’s cocktail menu before our server arrived to see what we were in the mood for. She began by asking if this was our first time at Autre Monde, and since it was, she described the food as Mediterranean-inspired and focused on small plates ideal for sharing. We began by ordering cocktails: I requested a Sazerac, and my companion ordered a blood orange gimlet. Both arrived promptly and were as carefully constructed as the meal to follow. When you are in for a special dinner for two, it’s nice not to be rushed as you enjoy the experience. At no time did we feel such pressure. In fact, one of the most enjoyable parts of our evening was the service. Aside from clearing our plates after each course and our server checking in to see what we would like to order next, we were largely undisturbed. The water bottle was left at the table for us to serve ourselves, which I personally enjoy, because you won’t be interrupted each time your water glass dips below the half-full mark. We began our meal with the Bar Board: deviled eggs, charcuterie and pickled asparagus, which was fantastic. Although it featured simple items, the flavor was there in full. We also ordered the crispy shrimp fritters a la planxa, which was good. Our second course was a gnocchi with housemade duck sausage, oven-dried cherry tomatoes, Parmigiano and crispy

Without being heavy, the entree was packed with a subtle yet rich flavor, and the duck sausage was some of the best I’ve had the pleasure of tasting. Feeling filled but not quite full, we ordered the night’s
special, which consisted of rockfish a la planxa set upon a bed of fava beans, peas and house-cured bacon, then topped with a dollop of lemon parsley butter. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the plating was beautiful. The fish and bacon
were delightful together, and soon, the peas were glazed with the buttery topping too. It was a wonderful final selection, and I again would order whatever is on special in the future based on this dish. Servers typically know what the best items in any restaurant are. This being
our mantra, we asked ours to bring out whatever she would recommend as our dessert. What arrived was not quite custard and not quite pudding, but chocolate hazelnut pot de creme. Rich, velvety smooth and utterly decadent are the only ways to describe the dessert. We enjoyed a cup of Bridgeport coffee with ours and stayed as the restaurant slowed to close. This Berwyn gem gets high marks in all areas, and I can’t wait to return for its much-discussed brunch. In fact, I’m hungry again just thinking about it.

NAPERVILLE – There’s a curse haunting Kim Jerantowski and the Lemont girls soccer team. The bright lights and big stage of the IHSA state tournament last weekend proved to be a daunting challenge for a young Lemont squad. But after bringing home a fourthplace trophy from the Class 2A event, the state tourney-tested Indians – who featured just three seniors this spring – already have big plans for what they could do a year from now. However, despite emerging as a state power in recent years, Lemont has found that making back-toback state appearances is easier said than done. The team finished runner-up in 2009 but lost in the sectional semifinals the next spring. The Indians then took third in 2011 only to lose in the regional final last season. “I feel pretty confident that we can get back there next year,” said Jerantowski, a junior midfielder. “But based on the past with Lemont soccer, we don’t do a lot the next year. We are going to try to break that curse for sure.” Lemont coach Rick Prangen said the biggest thing to guard against is complacency. He will rely on his two all-state players, Jerantowski and goalie Kelly Fritz, to ward off. “Eight of our 11 starters will be back,” the coach said. “They will have a year of experience and be physically stronger and we can be more complex in what we do.

“The risk is complacency. But the job of Kim and Kelly will be to make sure we have the team chemistry and team unity to make another good playoff run.” Jerantowski, who scored Lemont’s only goal at last weekend’s state tournament, knows there’s no free ride back to Naperville. “We definitely need to make sure we know that it won’t be handed to us,” she said. “We have to work just as hard as when we went to state. We can’t be arrogant, and we have to take advantage of only graduating three seniors.” Prangen was starting six underclassmen, along with three seniors and two juniors, by the end of the season. “For as young as we were, it was a really good run for us,” Prangen said. “That’s a testament to our kids. ... Now if you can get [to state] two years in a row, that gives you experience and a confidence level being back there.”

Taking a one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning in the Nazareth Class 3A sectional final, the Indians had defending state champion Glenbard South on the brink of elimination. But the Raiders were able to push across a pair of runs in their final at-bat to pull out a 6-5 win and bring the curtain down on an outstanding 2013 season for the Indians. “It was a great game allaround,” said Lemont coach Chris Traina. “I couldn’t be more proud of my kids. We came here to give them a game. They worked very hard all season.” Being in the same position a year from now isn’t out of the question because the squad loses just three seniors to graduation. But trying to fill the shoes of Jaworski, the team’s No. 1 pitcher and third hitter, will be tough. “Carly has been with me for a long time,” Traina said. “She does it all. She’s not just a great pitcher but also a hitter and she knows the game very well. Alyssa Molaro (.333 batting average, 22 RBIs) and Jordan Fiedler also played their final game for Lemont. Headlining a strong crop of returners in 2014 will be shortstop Rylie Jay, who hit .584 with 10 homers and 51 RBIs this spring. After starting strong for the first 15 minutes, the Indians eventually faded in a 3-1 loss. Kim Jerantowski scored the team’s lone goal off a corner kick by Aleksandra Mihailovic. The Indians went on to lose, 1-0, to Fenwick in the third-place match Saturday at North Central College. “I thought a lot of our players were pretty nervous, as was I,” Jerantowski said of the semifinal game. “Going to the state tournament, you want to play your best. You want to go out and play your hardest and not mess up. Back in 2011, they were more so role players but in 2013, they were expected to be the leaders of the team. “They gave us great leadership. Having a lot of freshmen and sophomores on the team, there is something to be said about creating good chemistry with such youngsters.”

The recent Hinsdale Central graduate is smart, speedy and a talented soccer player. “She’s a soccer player,” Central coach Michael Smith said. “There are some girls who play soccer on the weekends because that’s a thing to do, but she is someone who is a student of the game.” May got even more inside the game this season. Headed to Miami (Ohio) to continue her soccer career next season, May will play along the back line for the RedHawks. This season with the Red Devils, she switched from defender to forward and helped the Red Devils to their first state finals appearance since 2009. “It’s definitely a change in mindset,” May said. “When you’re a back, you’re more defensive minded and the ball comes to you a lot. As an attacking player, you need to have momentum to create opportunities. It definitely helps with versatility knowing both aspects of the game.” In Central’s 3-0 sectional semifinal win against Benet, May scored the first and third goals and assisted on the other score. She found the back of the net 38 seconds into the game when the Red Devils topped Lyons Township, 3-1, for the sectional title, and she added another goal later in the game. And when Central topped Sandburg for the supersectional crown and the berth in the state finals, May scored the game’s opening goal just over five minutes into the game. May’s penchant for scoring during the postseason was even more impressive considering her position switch, but it was something she was building toward since she scored her first goal of the season March 28 against Elk Grove. “It wasn’t just some goal where I shot it and it was a lucky goal,” she said. “It was one that was created off of something I did as a forward and that’s really when I felt like, OK, I can really play this position. That was like my aha moment.” Just as important as May’s ability to put the ball in the back of the net was her role as a leader for on a team that was nearly evenly split between seniors (nine on the team) and underclassmen (six freshmen and sophomores). “She’s a team player. She’s a player who I could ask to play any position, and there’s no moaning or complaining. She just wants to play,” Smith said. “She’s a leader with her poise and her humility. She’ll speak and direct and organize the girls, but she lets her play speak volumes.”

Heritage Fest
The Lemont Farmers Market officially opened for the season on Tuesday, June 4th. Lemont’s Farmers Market will continue every Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through Tuesday, October 29th. We will have vegetables, fruits, plants, flowers and shrubs of all sorts, a bounty of baked goods (9 different flavors of breakfast breads, cookies and brownies, turnovers, cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, and pies), Labriola breads, fresh tomato salsa in varieties from mild to extra hot, jams and jellies, beef and pork and more! In addition, the Master Gardeners will be visiting our market on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month to offer their expertise on any and all gardening issues you may have. This is a rain or shine event! At this time, we are seeking a coffee/tea/smoothie vendor and a cheese vendor for the market season to complete our core round-up of vendors. The 2013 Mayor’s Drive for Charity was a huge success with over $37,000 being raised which will be donated to about 40 Lemont charitable and service organizations. I can’t thank our sponsors, players and raffle donators enough for making this outing one of the largest amounts raised yet. I also want to thank the many volunteers that worked the event to help make everything run seamlessly. Thanks also goes to Tap House Grill for hosting an additional fundraising evening and to all of you who showed up, enjoyed a great meal, and help increase the proceeds for these charities. Lemont is truly an amazing Village with so many dedicated people volunteering their time and contributing to these organizations that help make Lemont a better place. Village Vehicle Stickers
Vehicle stickers went on sale June 3rd. Rates are as follows: $48-passenger vehicle, $60-truck “B” plates and RV’s, $105-truck “D” or “F” plates, $123-truck “H” - “Z” plates, $39-motorcycle and $6-antique vehicle. Rates for senior citizens age 65 and over are $16-first vehicle, $32-second vehicle, $20-truck and $40-second truck. The due date to purchase stickers at these rates is July 31, 2013. Thereafter, rates will increase to double the initial sale amount. You may purchase your sticker through the mail, at the Village Hall, Lemont Police Department or at MB Financial Bank Lemont Branch. Also, please be sure to display your current vehicle sticker by August 1, 2013. Stickers not properly displayed in the instructed location can result in a $50 citation from the Lemont Police Department.
Lemont Legends Cruise Nights The Lemont Chamber of Commerce will again host the weekly Lemont Legends Cruise Nights every Wednesday (except July 3rd) through August 28th. Lemont Quarrymen Vintage Baseball Games Pack up the family, a blanket and some chairs! The Lemont Quarrymen Vintage Baseball clubs season is back in full swing.
