Bicycling for a cause An employee volunteer team from the Citgo Lemont Refinery cycled between 35 and 200 miles to raise more than $28,000 in the Bike MS: Tour De Farms event hosted by the Greater Chicagoland Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Carey said in December the organization decided it could no longer afford to hold the festival after seeing the amount of money last year’s Keepataw Days yielded.

“It wasn’t a decision that we wanted to make,” he said.

“None of us in the organization are happy about it.”

Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves said in December that the Village of Lemont, Lemont Park

District and Lemont Township would meet to discuss the future of Keepataw Days.

“It’s an opportunity to evaluate what the festival brought to town and determine whether or not to enhance it depending on if the budget allows,” he said.

The village already has its own summer festival, Heritage Fest, held on a Saturday in the middle of July.

The park district also puts on several events, such as its Sunset Soiree concert series and a several days of Fourth of July celebrations.

What the library can do is educate the public about the project itself.

“We will be providing as much information as possible about why the renovation is needed and what it means for the library users,” said library director Sandra Pointon.

Besides updating equipment, the renovation project includes the addition of a new meeting room near the front of the library and reorganizing the existing space to allow for more quiet reading areas.

The question now must be approved by Cook County before it is officially added to the ballot.

LEMONT – The Lemont Public Library District Board of Trustees voted to submit a referendum question on the November election ballot asking voters to help fund a $2.8 million renovation project.

A public hearing on the renovation project will take place during the Oct. 9 library board meeting. The board will also determine the financing for the project during the meeting.

Library board president Vytenis Kirvelaitis said the financing would likely be similar to what the board has presented at recent public meetings about the project.

The board has proposed a 15year amortization schedule at a projected interest rate of 3.6 percent.

Village Board approves final plan for new subdivision

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Work on the proposed Kettering housing subdivision is expected to start before the end of the year after the Lemont Village Board passed the final proposed unit development plan during its Monday meeting.

The development will feature 241 homes built on 131 acres of vacant agricultural land at the southwest corner of 131st Street and Parker Road.

Trustees and members of the village staff said they were happy to be able to move forward with the development, which has been in discussion for seven years.

“It’s a substantial development,” Village Administrator George Schafer said. “We haven’t approved a subdivision of 240 homes in several years, not since the economic downturn.”

The village annexed the property in August 2007. The development originally was to be called Glen Oaks Estates

and was owned by Montalbano Homes Inc. Glen Oaks Estates LLC later purchased the property.

In December 2009, the village determined the engineering plans were based on erroneous topographical data and the entire site had to be re-engineered. The board approved an amended annexation agreement and preliminary planned unit development in December 2012.

The final PUD was submitted by the developer M/I Homes on May 2.

Schafer said the village and the developers had most recently been finalizing architecture and landscaping plans. He described the homes as high-end, single family detached houses.

Planning and Economic Development Director Charity Jones said the subdivision will be unique in that it allows for a large open space corridor and tree preserve areas.

The open space corridor will be dedicated to the Lemont Park District, which will

have the option of building a park in the area, she said.

Also Monday, the board approved a $25,000 grant from Citgo to help pay for a new vehicle for the Lemont Emergency Management Agency.

LEMA Director Tom Ballard said the department has not purchased a new vehicle since 2007.

Pete Colarelli spoke on behalf of Citgo at the meeting.

“We just wanted to show our appreciation through this grant for all that you do for us,” he said.

One change that will affect the entire district is an influx of new computers. Between computers dedicated to each classroom and several carts of computers available, the district will have more one-to-one computer opportunities than before. The district also invested in increasing its wireless bandwidth to accommodate the increased computer activity.

LEMONT – School starts again in Lemont next week, but students may realize it is not the same school they left a couple of months ago.

A new school year also means some new faces, old faces in new places and some new features.

Local principals broke down some of the changes students may see at their schools for the 2014-15 school year:

There also is a new tile art display in the front foyer decorated by students.

River Valley will have an assistant principal for the first time, Maggi Burkhardt, to help with the fifth grade moving there. The influx of students to the school also means a new traffic pattern. The school is sending a letter to parents with more details.

Old Quarry students will see brighter and more colorful hallways. Principal Bill Caron said the hallways have been painted different colors, partially for safety purposes.

During emergency situations, police would be able to identify where they are in the building by the color of the hallway, he said. The custodians also used a new waxing method that makes the floors cleaner and brighter, he said.

Sekulich: Everest Academy’s role is to really help bring the community together in a spirit of charity, and the Christmas service project is an outstanding way to do that. The Lemont community is a very caring and active community. Everest and the Lemont community will work

Sekulich: My focus will be to continue to have high academic standards and to continue to work to enhance student spiritual development, academic development, character development and service … I will be very eager to work with the staff and the families and the students.

Farnham: Have you had the opportunity to meet with families?

Sekulich: I have had the opportunity to meet with families. They have been most gracious and welcoming. Many parents have come in to meet with me. Then on Sunday, we had a farewell Mass and reception for Ms. [Christine] Gamache, the principal who will be leaving Everest. Again, they were so welcoming, and it is a blessing and a pleasure to be a part of the Everest family.

Farnham: What brought you to work at a private school for the first time?

Sekulich: I’m Catholic. I graduated from a Catholic elementary school, a Catholic high school, a Catholic college.

I am very excited to be a part of the Everest family. Everest is a new school. Everest in this location has been open for five years. I’m very much looking forward to building upon the accomplishments and helping Everest move forward.

Farnham: Was there anything in particular about Everest that attracted you?

Sekulich: The emphasis on academic excellence is extremely important. Providing personalized and rigorous learning experiences for students is something that I am such a strong advocate of. LEMONT – Kim Sekulich has decades of experience in education, but her new job as principal of Everest Academy in Lemont is her first time at a private school.

She started July 15 after most recently Kim Sekulich serving as principal for eight years at Taft School in Lockport.

Everest Academy will have 265 students this year from more than 20 towns in prekindergarten through eighth grade.

Sekulich talked with Lemont Suburban Life’s Dan Farnham about what she expects as a new leader of the private school.

Farnham: What is the difference between being the principal at a private school as opposed to a public school?

Sekulich: In both public schools and private schools, funding is always a challenge.

In public schools, the biggest sources of funding come from property taxes and general state aide. In a private school, for Everest, the sources of funding come from tuition and fundraising.

State Fair shouldn’t be doomed to lose money SPRINGFIELD – Twenty years ago, the state implemented reforms designed to make the Illinois State Fair break even.

They failed. Big time. The fair has been as surefire a loser as a kid playing a carnival game. Well, maybe that’s not fair – every once and awhile, a youngster actually wins. Not so with the fair. It’s a carnie’s dream: A loser that won’t quit.

It and its southern cousin, VIEWS the DuQuoin State Fair, havScott en’t broken even once in the past two decades.

Reeder State Fair Manager Amy Bliefnick told me she doesn’t know if it’s possible for the State Fair to operate in the black.

Leave it to a government bureaucrat to think losing money is always an option.

During the past 20 years, the state fairs have lost $71.2 million. And Illinois taxpayers have paid those deficits. That’s money the state could have used to pay for something really important.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the fairs. As a teenager, I showed cattle and hogs. As a parent, I’ve carried each of my three daughters on my shoulders through every nook and cranny of the State Fairgrounds. Recently, my 83-year-old father was regaling me with stories of how he and his best friend from high school showed Duroc hogs at the State Fair in 1950. He tells me the fair’s hog barn looks just the same as it did 64 years ago.

And, folks, it smells just the same, too.

But what really stinks are these deficits.

Hosting fairs and festivals is not a core government function. The money would be much better spent educating our kids, keeping our roads safe, incarcerating the worst in our society or lowering taxes. Instead we are spending it to bring Tilt-A-Whirls and deep-fried Snickers bars to Springfield.

Sorry, fairs are nice but not something in which government should be involved.

They have known that for quite some time in the Lone Star State. The State Fair of Texas is operated by a nonprofit corporation that manages to take in about $8 million more than it spends each year. That money gets spent on improving the Dallas city park where the fair is held.

So state fairs can break even. They can even turn a profit.

At a time when Illinois state government has the worst credit rating in the nation and is paying its bills months late, it’s time to take a serious look at making the fairs self-sufficient.

It’s democracy at its finest: Residents in the Lemont Public Library District will decide whether they want to fund a $2.8 million library renovation project. It’s unfortunate that the 65-year-old Keepataw Days festival will be no more. It has disbanded, with organizers citing low turnout in recent years that’s resulted in inadequate funding for the fest, carnival and parade. There’s still hope the parade can return on its own in 2015, and we hope that is the case.

Lombard post office needs automatic door I’m a senior in Lombard. Can someone please explain to me why the Lombard Post Office does not have an automatic door for handicapped people?

Villa Park, Elmhurst, Wheaton and Glen Ellyn all have automatic doors. I tried to get in the other day, I dropped my packages – it’s very disconcerting. I was told the building is too old, and they don’t have to have it. I thought all federal offices had to have an automatic door for the handicapped. Can someone please explain why Lombard doesn’t?

I totally agree with the writer who was responding to the La Grange writer complaining about dogs peeing in their yard and how gross it is. People walk dogs. It’s a fact of life.

Responsible dog owners do not just dump their dogs in their backyards, they walk them. It’s a form of exercise for both walker and dog and [it] socializes the dog to the world around them. Dogs who are socialized are less likely to be aggressive. Responsible dog owners also pick up after their dog, but peeing is a different ball of wax. You can’t prevent that and most people in our neighborhood try to steer the dogs to a tree or something in the parkway.

But even if they pee on your flowers, it isn’t going to ruin them. Get a life, or a dome, as the reader suggested!

I live in the village of Stickney. Taxpayers’ dollars are being wasted by people in office who are putting their political agendas before the taxpayers. We voted out a tax cheat from office and had a trustee who had to resign because he was collecting a disability from the police department and collecting as a trustee. Now, we have a bigheaded softball president who is a trustee in our village and votes against the mayor of Stickney out of spite. We have a trustee who can’t make a decision on her own to save her life. We also have a trustee who owns a business in town and has voted against our budget. These three trustees are wasting our tax dollars. They should put the citizens of Stickney ahead of their own personal gain. What a shame.

DMK Burger Bar delivers pure temptation LOMBARD – I’m the kind of person who receives a whole wheel of cheese for Christmas, and it’s gone before the new year. The kind of person you can’t leave unsupervised in a gourmet cheese section for longer than five minutes without having to go back for the full-sized cart.

So while the gourmet burgers at DMK Burger Bar are the main attraction, I couldn’t help but note the excellence of the cheese and everything else sitting on top of the beef or bison patties.

I met a friend at the Lombard location of the Chicago favorite after work last week, settled onto a bar stool, and immediately wanted pretty much every burger offered.

DMK’s menu is deceptively simple at first glance: 14 numbered burgers on the left – no names, just ingredients – and a list of sides and appetizers on the right. Among the 14 are five that don’t use red meat, and are based on fish, turkey or vegetables.

The simple concept belies the fact that once you start reading the fine print, the experience turns into abundant choices. Any of the patties, all made from grass-fed beef, can be substituted with bison for $2 extra. Ravenous customers can add a second patty for $3, or an egg to any burger for $1.

It was my first visit to DMK, so I didn’t go crazy with the add-ons. The bartender was quick to bring us our beverages – the third word in DMK Burger Bar is taken seriously. The entire back of the menu is full of craft beer drafts and bottles, and a wall chalkboard lists craft cocktails.

After considering one of the day’s two specials, a Cajun burger with fried okra, I made an executive decision to put all my stock in the second burger on the menu: beef patty topped with chili-rubbed onion strings, Amish blue cheese and spicy chipotle ketchup.

Programs on the move Local schools part of new conference alignments

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com Conference realignment has been a buzz topic in college athletics over the past few years, and the Chicago-area high school scene is going through similar changes.

The shift is taking place for both public and private schools. Some are moving from long-standing conferences to new territory, both competitively and geographically.

Changing to a new conference entails more than just making new schedules and resetting GPS bus routes. Craig Etheridge, boys basketball head coach at Westmont, led the Sentinels from the old Southwest Suburban Conference to the Suburban Prairie Conference to their current place in the Interstate Eight Conference.

“It certainly is an adjustment,” Etheridge said. “For me, one of the hardest things was leaving behind all the coaches from the first conference and the working relationships and friendships that go along with competing against each other.

The next season, working with a new group of guys, it was different and there definitely was an adjustment period.”

With several schools making changes, the conference landscape is going to look much different in the near future.

DVC upheaval One of the leagues that has seen a major alteration is the DuPage Valley Conference, which has been around since 1975. Lake Park came in from the Upstate Eight Conference while West Chicago moved from the DVC to the UEC beginning with the 2013-14 school year. This fall Glenbard East and West Aurora also move from the DVC to the UEC, leaving the league with just six teams.

Glenbard East football coach John Walters downplayed any major adjustment in entering a new league.

“There’s really no secrets going into Friday night,” Walters said.

“We have an idea of what they’re going to do and we have an idea of what we’re going to do.”

It’s a bit clunky, but it’s only temporary since Neuqua Valley, Metea Valley and Waubonsie Valley are set to join the DVC for the 2015-16 school year to add more power to an already strong conference.

Metro Suburban mixes it up Another league undergoing an overhaul is the Metro Suburban Conference. Seven schools – IC Catholic, Wheaton Academy, Aurora Central Catholic, St. Edward, Chicago Christian, Walther Christian and Guerin – joined the MSC from the now disbanded Suburban Christian Conference.

The MSC, which will have two divisions, becomes the only football conference with both public

This is the first time during that period that RB won’t be in the same conference as Elmwood Park. n If Glenbard East had stayed in the DVC, which now consists of Glenbard North, Lake Park, Naperville Central, Naperville North, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South, the Rams would have had to fight history on the football field. The Rams haven’t won a football game against any of those schools since 2003. n This is the second straight year West Chicago will have a new look to its schedule in most sports. The Wildcats joined the Upstate Eight Valley last school year and shift over to the Upstate Eight River starting this fall, where they will face seven new conference foes.

Mixed conferences exist around the state with Boylan Catholic (Rockford), Althoff Catholic (Belleville) and Sacred-Heart Griffin (Springfield) competing against public schools.

“I don’t think it changes much,” IC Catholic athletic director Tom Schergen said of switching. “It just changes our schedule and teams we’re playing. From a geography standpoint it changes our schedule. We’re in the West division where everyone is right around us.”

In the MSC West, IC will play against former SCC foes ACC and Wheaton Academy along with public schools Riverside Brookfield, Glenbard South and Fenton. This is the first time IC will be in a confer-

ence with public schools, but Schergen noted that IC previously played most of the teams in the MSC in non-conference games so a working relationship already existed.

“Maybe it’s possibly the first time we play RB in things, but we’ve played Ridgewood and Elmwood Park before,” Schergen said.

“Even the private schools, Illiana and Timothy, we’ve played in things, so it’s not all new to us.”

The Knights also get a more extended pairing with Timothy Christian. The two Elmhurst schools already scheduled each other in non-conference games in numerous sports along with being paired together for just about every IHSA postseason regional.

RB boys basketball coach Tom McCloskey, who tries to schedule the Bulldogs against top competition regularly, welcomed the new competition.

“I think the new conference will be tougher,” McCloskey said.

“Some tougher schools with great basketball traditions. It’s just a new situation.”

He doesn’t believe playing with more private schools will change the dynamic of the league.

“I didn’t think that was a much of a factor at all,” McCloskey said.

“Some of the schools, Wheaton Academy and the others, have strong basketball traditions and it’s a priority at their school.”

New-look Catholic league The remaining SCC schools, including Montini and St. Francis, were left looking for a new home.

Marian Central Catholic joined the East Suburban Catholic Conference and the rest joined the Chicago Catholic League for just football and boys soccer this year.

In 2015, all of the boys sports will be members of the CCL while the girls sports will be joining the GCAC. “To me personally, it is absolute excitement,” St. Francis athletic director Dan Hardwick said about the conference changes over the next two years. “Both of these leagues have been bending over backwards for us, that is the best way to put it. They’ve been so accommodating and they’ve been so excited to get us in their leagues.

“It’s going to be a challenge but we are relishing the challenge.

That is all part of the excitement.”

we’re doing. My approach has almost been the exact same. It’s basketball. It’s getting kids to love playing and getting a program together. It’s not really much different.

“But I do see both sides of it, obviously private schools have an advantage as far as getting kids outside of certain boundaries.”

If the split were to occur, it would drastically change the playoff landscape for local small schools like Lisle and Westmont. Those two schools typically mix with private schools like IC Catholic, Timothy Christian, Aurora Christian, Walther Christian and St. Edward in the postseason.

“I’m torn because I get along with all those guys and they have good teams and good programs,” Westmont boys basketball coach Craig Etheridge said of his private school brethren. “Part of me is loyal to the concept of playing the same teams, but I’ve also lost kids to Timothy Christian, Nazareth and Montini. I’m curious to see how it plays out on both sides.”

something to be said about playing everybody and challenging yourself and playing programs that are strong. It forces you to raise your level of play a little bit.”

His biggest concern is what might happen to the Metro Suburban Conference, of which the Raiders are a member, if such a proposal passes. The league is expanding to 14 schools this year and includes both public and private institutions.

“From the Metro Suburban Conference perspective, we have a private and public mix,” Carlson said. “Talking with John Treiber (former Glenbard South AD) and talking to some other ADs, what makes the MSC work is we’ve been able to work through issues and do it collaboratively.

“If something like this happens, what would it mean for the Metro Suburban? Does it do damage to the conference? It’s a tough sell. We are in a unique position and so much work has been put in by these ADs, certainly not by me, I’m new, but especially John Treiber. I’d hate to see that crumble.”

A few other conferences in the state – such as the Central State Eight (with Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin), the Northern Illinois Conference (with Rockford Boylan), the Western Big Six (with Rock Island Alleman) and the South Seven Conference (with Belleville Althoff) – also mix public and nonboundary schools but not to the extent of the MSC. Benet and Nazareth are two area schools that compete in East Suburban Catholic Conference, which is comprised entirely of private schools. Benet AD Gary Goforth believes the latest proposal stems from the success factor issue. Already competing in the larger classes in the playoffs (7A for football, 4A for softball, basketball and volleyball), the Redwings wouldn’t be greatly affected by the success factor.

Goforth didn’t want to talk specifics until reading the proposal, but he believes a complete separation isn’t necessarily the best solution.

“If it would force the private and nonboundary schools out of the IHSA, I think that would be a detriment to high school athletics,” he said. “We en-

TIME AND PLACE OF OPENING OF BIDS: Sealed Proposals for the improvement described herein will be received at the office of the Village Clerk of the Village of Lemont, 418 Main Street, Lemont, Illinois 60439 until 10:15 a.m, August 29, 2014, and publicly opened and read at that time.

II.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The proposed work is officially known as 2014 SANITARY SEWER & STORM SEWER CLEANING AND TELEVISING and includes the cleaning and televising of sanitary sewers and storm sewers, in the Village of Lemont, having a total length of 33,334 feet.

III. INSTRUCTIONS TO BIDDERS: A.

All work will be in conformance with the "Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction", dated January 1, 2012.

B. Plans and Proposal forms may be obtained from the Project Engineer, FRANK NOVOTNY & ASSOCIATES, INC., 825 Midway Drive, Willowbrook, Illinois, 60527, (630) 887-8640, for a non-refundable fee of $75.00.

Proposal forms are non-transferable. Only those Proposals that have been obtained from, and with the approval of, Frank Novotny & Associates will be accepted at the bid opening.

C. Only qualified Contractors who can furnish satisfactory proof that they have performed work of similar nature as Contractors will be entitled to receive Plans and submit Proposals. In order to meet this requirement, at the request of the Engineer, bidders will be required to submit a "Statement of Experience" consisting of a list of previous projects of similar nature in order to receive Plans. The Owner reserves the right to issue Bid Documents only to those Contractors deemed qualified.

D. All Proposals must be accompanied by a Bank Cashier's Check, Bank Draft, Certified Check, or Bid Bond for not less than five percent (5%) of the total amount of the Bid, or as provided in the applicable sections of the "Standard Specifications".

E. No Bid may be withdrawn after opening of Proposals without the consent of the Owner for a period of forty-five (45) days after the scheduled time of opening of Bids.

F. The Contractor will be required to furnish a labor and material "Performance Bond" in the full amount of the Contract.

G. The Contractor will be required to pay Prevailing Wages in accordance with all applicable laws.

IV. AWARD CRITERIA AND REJECTION OF BIDS: The Owner reserves the right to determine responsibility at the time of award, to reject any and all Proposals, to re-advertise the proposed improvements, and to waive technicalities.

Message from the Mayor The current Village electric aggregation plan with FirstEnergy Solutions will expire in October. Through our inclusion with the Will County Aggregation Group, which I serve as Chairman, a bidding process was done to select our new energy supplier. Homefield Energy was chosen, and a 36-month contract was agreed upon with a rate of $0.06996/ kWh for the first 24 months, and $.06850/kWh months 2436. This represents a 6.5% savings over the Commonwealth Edison rate of $.0742/kWh. Additionally, there is no early termination fee associated with this program.

During this month, eligible residents and small businesses will receive a notice from the Village and Homefield Energy with this information. This is an opt-out program; therefore, if you want to be included in the Village’s plan with Homefield Energy, you need not do anything. If you do not want to be included in the plan, you must return the included opt-out card by the indicated timeframe. If you do not return the card, you will automatically be included in the Village’s plan with Homefield Energy.

Residents that are currently with a different supplier other than the Village’s program with FirstEnergy or ComEd will receive an informational letter informing them that Homefield Energy was chosen. If you wish to participate in the Village program, you should first contact your current energy supply company to find out if you have a contract termination fee. If you then decide to participate in the Village’s program, please contact Homefield Energy directly at 866-694-1262 and they will assist you.

No Keepataw Days The Village continues to receive questions regarding Keepataw Days and the parade. Keepataw Days was organized by a committee unrelated to the Village. Due to unfortunate circumstances, this committee has decided they can no long sustain the event. Therefore, Keepataw Days, as well as the parade, will not take place this year. It is unforeseen at this time whether any portion of the event will occur in the future.

The Village hosts many events throughout the year as does the Park District, schools and other organizations. If you’re looking for something to do around town, check out the Lemont Community Calendar on the Village website and start some new traditions.

Watering Regulations As a reminder to residents, odd-even watering restrictions in the Village remain in effect through October 1. Properties with an odd number address may water on odd numbered calendar days. Properties with an even numbered address may water on even numbered calendar days. In addition, no lawn sprinkling is allowed from the Village water system between the hours of 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. On the day new sod is laid, residents may water freely (no permit required). Thereafter, the odd-even regulations apply.

Sunset Soirée On August 21, the final Sunset Soirée “Back to School Bash” will be held at Covington North Park, 1257 Covington Drive.

Musical entertainment will be provided by The Janglers beginning at 6 p.m. Bring your picnic basket and lawn chairs and enjoy this free event sponsored by the Lemont Park District and the Village of Lemont.
