By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Five bands will take the stage for the Giving Back to Lemont concert from 4 to 9 p.m. July 25 outside of Front Street Cantina, 319 Front St. It is the third year for the concert, which collects money and food for the two Lemont food pantries.

Bands scheduled to play are Timing’s Everything from 4 to 4:45 p.m.; Lost in Time from 5 to 5:45 p.m.; Phive from 6 to 6:45 p.m.; The Fourth Band from 7 to 7:45 p.m.; and Gringo Starr from 8:10 to 9 p.m.

Admission is free, but a donation of money or a nonperishable food item is requested.

“It’s a fun time,” said Lemont resident John Quinn, who is helping organize the event. “You get out with your family and listen to some music.”

Mark Oikle of Lemont once again was responsible for booking the bands for the concert.

As a member of the local band Phive, he said he reached out to musicians he knew – most from Lemont – who were willing to perform for free.

LEMONT – The rock cover band Rendition will perform as part of Lemont’s Sunset Soiree Concert Series at 7 p.m.

July 30 in downtown Lemont.

The outdoor concert area will open to the public at 6 p.m.

It will be the second-to-last performance of the series, with Retro Active performing the final concert Aug. 6.

The previous Sunset Soiree concert scheduled July 16 was canceled because of thunderstorms.

In particular, Quinn and Oikle said they are thankful for donations from former Lemont mayor John Piazza.

Piazza, who works for Country Insurance and First Advantage Mortgage in Lemont, is sponsoring the stage and public address system.

Besides entertaining the crowd, Oikle said he hopes the concert will encourage other musicians to participate next year.

He especially wants to attract younger musicians who will get a chance to perform in front of an audience and draw more young people to the event.

Outdoor classroom adds to nature education

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Lemont Township and the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club are working together to highlight the township’s Heritage Woodland Sanctuary, located behind the community center, 16300 Alba St. Most recently, the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club raised money to create an outdoor meeting space behind the building, which opened in June.

The township has not settled on a name for the space, but it consists of

a 9-foot tall fireplace and limestone benches that can seat about 30 people.

Township Facilities Director Kathy Henrikson said the space primarily will be used as an outdoor classroom but also will be available for other events.

“It’s a nice area for instruction and special events,” she said. “We’ve had people get married there already.”

She said she has always wanted to add features to the community center that draw attention to the sanctuary.

“Quite often people will come to the center from the front entrance and they have no idea what is behind the

building,” she said.

The sanctuary is comprised of 59 acres of prairie, savanna, wetlands and woodlands, with trails running through it.

However, the township has limited money to add to these features, which is why the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club stepped up to help.

Kim Manning, head of community outreach with the club, said they took up the cause of the sanctuary after hosting a fundraiser at the community center.

She said the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club had worked for years on the Safety Village in downtown Lemont and members wanted a new project they could build from the ground up.

She said it was important for the project to have an educational aspect so children could benefit.

Henrikson said local schools visit the sanctuary as part of their environmental curriculum and she wanted to give them more educational opportunities.

4 Lemont resident spends 10 months working on service projects

LEMONT – Katie Wallace of Lemont has finished 1,700 hours of getting her hands dirty after serving with the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps.

Having worked on various projects in California, Nevada and Washington, she officially graduated from the program July 23.

The National Civilian Community Corps is a federal program that engages students ages 18 to 24 in 10 months of community service projects in exchange for a higher education grant.

Wallace is a 2014 graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, where she focused on environmental studies.

She said she learned about the National Civilian Community Corps while doing volunteer work in college.

“I decided that was something I wanted to do after I graduated college,” she said.

“When I went to Vegas, I was shocked that there were no trees,” she said. “Nothing’s green.”

She said she would like to do her future environmental work in areas with more vegetation.

Although Wallace men-

tioned natural areas available to explore around Lemont, she said it was not until she went to college that she discovered her passion for the environment.

“It took me until probably my junior year of college to realize the courses I was taking were that style [environmental science],” she said. “I kind of realized that the environment is where I wanted to be.”

With her grant of more than $5,000, she plans to go to graduate school to get her master’s in environmental science.

She said she is not sure she has what it takes to be a ranger at a national park but would like to work in an educational aspect.

Reflecting on her experience with the National Civilian Community Corps, Wallace said the most important thing she has learned is a can-do attitude.

“I came away with it realizing you can do pretty much everything you’re imagining to do if you are willing to learn it,” she said. “You don’t have to be an expert to make something happen.”

Members of the 17th Cook County Board District Committee selected Palos Township committeeman Sean Morrison as the district’s new Cook County commissioner during a July 22 meeting.

Morrison replaces Elizabeth Doody Gorman, who announced her resignation from the Cook County Board of Commissioners during a special board meeting July 15.

I made that phone call about 15 years ago after covering a session of the Illinois Prisoner Review Board and watching the board members vote to release a long-serving inmate.

The elated grandmother dropped the phone receiver and screamed, “Thank you, Jesus!

And then there was silence. The grandmother came back on the phone and whispered, “Which one of my grandsons is getting out?”

Our society has created a culture of incarceration that permeates impoverished neighborhoods throughout Illinois and the country. No nation incarcerates more people, or a higher percentage of its citizenry, than the United States of America.

Not China. Not Russia. Not Iran.

The Land of the Free has become the Home of the Incarcerated.

Growing up on a farm in downstate Galesburg, I would look out my bedroom window at night and see the eerie glow of prison lights just down the road. I wondered why folks there were locked up. They seemed to come from a world different than my own.

Many were there for drug crimes and other nonviolent offenses. When it comes to drugs, wealthy and middle-class folks end up in rehab and low-income ones end up doing time.

Middle-class people have “youthful indiscretions,” while those from poor families have felonies.

It’s part of that pernicious concoction of race, class and hopelessness that perverts our justice system.

The Brookings Institute found that blacks are far more likely to be arrested for selling or possessing drugs than whites, even though whites use drugs at the same rate. And whites are actually more likely to sell drugs.

This mass incarceration for nonviolent offenses doesn’t serve our society well. It perpetuates the cycle of poverty.

The Illinois Department of Corrections reports that 62 percent of inmates are parents. Seldom is a family better off when a nonviolent mom or dad is behind bars.

Alternatives to prison must be deployed.

Prisons are taking a devastating toll on our state’s inner cities and escalating the financial burden on taxpayers who are forced to support a system that breeds poverty and destroys families.

“Hopefully they’ll be able to fit more trips in,” she said. “We definitely want the children to come in and take advantage of this within our backyard.”

Manning said the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club has more plans to add amenities to the sanctuary.

“The lobby of the township [community center] right now is kind of a blank slate,” she said. “We want to be able to use that lobby as an interactive story wall that explains what is out there in the sanctuary.”

She said they also want to add more signage to the sanctuary, including maps and markers identifying species of plants.

To pay for these features, the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club and Lemont Township will host an Oktoberfest fundraiser later this year.

The township hosted an Oktoberfest event last year, which included drinks and a polka band, but this year’s event will occur earlier in the month and include more family activities.

There also are plans for a scarecrow decorating contest leading up to Oktoberfest.

Red Stars look to maintain momentum of World Cup win

editorial@mysuburbanlife.com LISLE – The United States returned to the pinnacle of women’s soccer by winning the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Vancouver earlier in July.

It was a record third world title for the U.S. and first since 1999, and the response from the general public is an indication of how much the sport has grown in popularity and talent over the past 16 years.

Four members of the Chicago Red Stars – forward Christen Press, midfielders Lori Chalupny and Shannon Boxx, and defender Julie Johnston – were on the U.S. team and all were amazed at the support.

“Being my first World Cup it was absolutely unbelievable, and to win it, definitely I don’t think you can top that,” Johnston said. “I didn’t know what to expect in the sense of the fans.

“In every single game it was absolutely remarkable to see how many U.S. fans were there, and when we came back to the States it was even greater.”

The team was feted with a ticker-tape parade down the “Canyon of Heroes” in New York and won Team of the Year honors at ESPN’S ESPY awards.

The fanfare stunned even the veteran Boxx, 38, who will retire at the end of the year.

“I think the ticker-tape parade was pretty amazing,” Boxx said. “Not everybody is given the honor to do that.

I’ve been around a long time and I think that’s one of the coolest events that I’ve ever been part of.”

Boxx was a member of four World Cup teams and has seen the popularity rise over the years.

“It has gotten so much better,” Boxx said. “You go back to 1991 [the first World Cup which the U.S. won in China]. Nobody was waiting for them at the airport. Then in 2011 we didn’t win but we got an amazing reception when we came back to the U.S. I think that’s when it started.”

But will it continue?

The U.S. victory in the 1999 World Cup led to the establishment of the first domestic professional league.

But three such leagues all folded after three seasons and the NWSL is now in its third season. Will this time be different?

“We’ve got to keep winning,” Red Stars owner Arnim Whisler said. “In a town like this with nine or 10 other pro sports teams, if we don’t win, we’re off the radar.

“We’ve got the brand, we’ve got the talent and we’ve got people coming

in the stadium who have never seen us before. We just have to thrill them when they come and they’ll usually come back.

“That’s on us. That’s on ... marketing through the people who have been in the stadium, better relations with the press in Chicago. We can convert that.”

The Red Stars have plenty of marketable young stars in the 26-year-old Press and 2014 NWSL Rookie of the Year Johnston, 23, plus Under-23 National Team members Vanessa DiBernardo and Danielle Colaprico and 22-year-old leading scorer Sofia Huerta.

“I think that it is an incredibly important moment for women’s soccer,” Press said. “The important thing is for the fans who have been so great for us and for the national team to continue to support us and come out to the NWSL games and see that there’s hundreds of women in this country that play great soccer.

“It is something worth watching and I think if the fans continue to support us in our leagues, that is going to push women’s soccer in America forward at every level.”

There is no doubt the Red Stars have high expectations. Chicago head coach Rory Dames called the atmosphere of the July 18 game “fantastic” but said the team didn’t play up to its caliber.

“Regardless of why people are here, I would like us to play the way we’re capable of playing,” Dames said. “I think we have a lot of exciting players on the team outside of the national team players. Hopefully we can get some more fans in because they want to see some players and buy into the team and really start to enjoy what they see.”

LISLE – A whirlwind for four members of the U.S. Soccer Women’s National Team continued July 18.

The U.S. won the Women’s World Cup on July 5 and the team was celebrated as heroes upon its return to home soil. The quartet of Shannon Boxx, Lori Chalupny, Julie Johnston and Christen Press got a big welcome home July 18 when they suited up for the Chicago Red Stars for their first home match since winning the World Cup.

In front of a sellout crowd at Benedictine University, Boxx, Chalupny, Johnston and Press received the royal treatment from the Red Stars and the fans who cheered on the World Cup players in a National Women’s Soccer League game against the Boston Breakers.

Boxx and Chalupny each played in one World Cup game, Press played in four games and tallied a goal against Australia, and Johnston started all seven games and notched an assist.

Visiting Breakers with strong performance against NWSL-leading Red Stars Lisle, Il. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars drew 1-1 with visiting Boston Breakers in the club’s official “Welcome Home, World Cup Stars” match on Saturday night.

U.S. defender-midfielder and Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny scored the go-ahead goal in her first NWSL match since winning soccer’s most prestigious trophy, followed by an equalizer from Breakers forward Stephanie McCaffrey, both tallies coming after the break.

Chicago honored all eight of their World Cup stars in front of a capacity crowd and saw four of them take the field for the first time since rejoining the team, Chalupny and Canada veteran Karina LeBlanc both registering starts while American legend Shannon Boxx and Canucks forward Adriana Leon entered in the second half. New Zealand captain Abby Erceg put in another strong performance anchoring the backline for the Red Stars.

In a relatively uneventful opening half, Chicago forward Jen Hoy had the first dangerous look in the 9th minute of play, her low drive from the left side of the box whistling wide of the right post. Strike partner Sofia Huerta came even closer to finding the net twelve minutes later, as she aimed for the same post from a similar position, cutting to her right and producing a powerful drive that whizzed just over the frame guarded

by World Cup winner Alyssa Naeher.

The visiting Breakers had a chance to score in the 42nd minute. LeBlanc came far off her line to punch out a long ball into the attack, which subsequently fell to the feet of Katie Schoepfer, whose long-distance effort forced the Red Stars netminder to leave

her feet for a quality parry to her right.

The home side got on the board nine minutes after the break, defender Taryn Hemmings earning the assist against her former team by getting past an opposition player on the right and taking the ball to the byline before centering to Chalupny for a simple finish into the open net.

The lead would be short-lived, as McCaffrey equalized just after the hour-mark.

The striker, who was drafted by Chicago in the 2015 NWSL College Draft and subsequently traded to Boston, latched on to a through ball from the left sideline and calmly slotted past the onrushing LeBlanc and inside the right post to make it 1-1.

McCaffrey nearly had another in the 65th minute, as she cut to her right inside the area and sent a curling effort toward the right post that was tipped wide by a diving LeBlanc.

The Red Stars were unable to find a winner during the remainder of the match, as their opponents from Massachusetts displayed impressive tactical discipline to prevent any dangerous opportunities.

The Chicago Red Stars look to return to their winning ways when they travel to take on Boston once again this coming Wednesday, July 22. The club’s next home match is a blockbuster clash with defending NWSL champions FC Kansas City that could feature a combined total of eight World Cup winners.
