dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Local organizations plan to highlight all the activities and services available to Lemont youth during the (not)INVINCIBLE Hall of Info from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. April 16 at the Lemont High School Performing Arts Center, 800 Porter St. Terri O’Neill-Borders, founder of the Hope and Friendship Foundation and chaplain for the Lemont Police Department, said she felt compelled to organize such an event after a series of drug and alcohol-related deaths involving Lemont teens and young adults last fall.

She said she held a meeting with leaders from community groups that included local schools and churches in December.

“I just said to the community leaders, ‘Let’s gather and see if there is something we can do,’” she said.

O’Neill-Borders said the name [not]INVINCIBLE was chosen because some teens and young adults have the attitude that they can live a reckless lifestyle without consequences.

“Unfortunately, we saw they are

not invincible,” she said.

The event will include conversations with speakers such as John Roberts with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization.

However, O’Neill-Borders said she wants the event to be about more than drug and alcohol abuse awareness.

“I wanted the Hall of Info,” she said. “I wanted them not just to come and hear a speaker and go home.”

She said the Hall of Info will be a onestop event for teens and adults looking for either activities to be involved in or organization offering help.

“The only thing I hope is that when we walk out at 9 o’clock at night, people feel they gained something,” she said.

Raffle prizes will offered, including hair, nail and restaurant gift certificates.

O’Neill-Borders said she has been inundated by people asking to be part of the event.

Groups wishing to participate need to register by April 13 by emailing info@hopeandfriendshipfoundation.com.

O’Neill-Borders said she is planning another event in the fall that is different than the spring event.

LEMONT – Lemont residents can learn how to use iPads during a series of seminars starting Monday at the Lemont Public Library, 50 E. Wend St. Classes run from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Mondays, April 6 to 20 and May 4 to 18.

Topics include using Safari, apps, eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines.

The class is for Lemont Library cardholders only. Registration is required by visiting www.lemontlibrary.org.

Trout fishing season starts Saturday at Sag Quarry East LEMONT – The Forest Preserve District of Cook County stocked Sag Quarry East in Lemont with 500 pounds of rainbow trout for the start of inland trout fishing season Saturday, according to a forest preserve news release.

The forest preserve closed the lake to fishing Monday to allow the trout time to disperse in the water.

There is a five trout per day creel limit with no size restrictions. No more than two lines per person are allowed, and no more than two hooks per line may be used. A valid Illinois sport fishing license with an Inland Trout Stamp is required for anglers 16 and older.

Sag Quarry East is located east of Route 83 between Cal-Sag trail and Main Street.

‘All American Boy’

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Almost two years after he gained national attention for his music video “All-American Boy,” Lemont musician Steve Grand has released his first studio album, also called “All American Boy.” The album was released March 24 and includes 13 tracks.

It will debut on Billboards’ Top 200 Albums at 47th, as well as third on the indie album charts.

“It feels like such a relief,” Grand said. “This album has ... really been my lifelong dream.”

When Grand debuted with the video for “All-American Boy,” he was called the first openly gay country musician and it received widespread media attention. The video currently has more than 3.9 million views on YouTube.

Looking to continue with his growing musical career, Grand reached out to potential producers for his first studio album.

In December 2013, he started working with Aaron Johnson, who produced albums for the bands The Fray and Eve 6 previously.

To fund the album, he began a Kickstarter campaign Feb. 26, 2014.

Last fall, I joined with District 113A Superintendent Dr. Courtney Orzel to alert you of legislation being considered in Springfield that had the potential to remove nearly $2 million annually from Lemont schools and affect the students we serve.

Fortunately, the School Funding Reform Act of 2014 (i.e., Senate Bill 16), was not called for a vote in the Illinois House of Representatives despite approval from the Illinois State Senate.

Unfortunately, under the COMMUNITY newly proposed Senate Bill 1 – the School Funding Reform Act VOICE of 2015 – the schools that serve Mary the Lemont community, once Ticknor again, could be facing a tremendous loss in state funding.

The intent of both last year’s SB 16 and this year’s SB 1 is to improve the state’s school funding formula. This is, of course, an admirable goal.

SB 16 failed to be called for a vote by the Illinois House last year because it created too much of an atmosphere of “winners vs. losers” across the state. Under last year’s proposal, Lemont High School District 210 was predicted to lose nearly $655,000 in state funding on an annual basis, while District 113A was projected to lose more than $1.2 million.

State Sen. Andy Manar, the sponsor of both bills, set out to improve last year’s legislation and reduce the negative impact on some school districts. Unfortunately, the improvement for our districts is negligible.

Under SB 1, District 210 is projected to lose nearly $614,000 annually. This represents a slight improvement from the initial proposal but still would be a blow to our budget and almost certainly would result in the loss of both curricular and extra-curricular programs. District 113A’s situation also improves only slightly, as it is projected to lose more than $1.1 million annually.

Despite going back to the drawing board with this legislation, our community still could come up short by more than $1.7 million annually if SB 1 is implemented. From the perspective of SB 1’s authors, local taxpayers should take on more of the burden of funding their schools.

The state already prorates its annual General State Aid contributions to school districts. However, budgetary holes left

by SB 1 would not be filled easily. SB 1 still creates a winners vs. losers scenario, and there is no doubt on which side of the fence Lemont would fall.

This is not the way to fix how schools are funded in Illinois.

College of DuPage serves about 28,000 students a semester, making it the second-largest undergraduate institution in Illinois.

It has more than 90 certificate and degree programs. It’s a jewel of the western suburbs, extending beyond its namesake county to serve students from Lemont to Naperville, from La Grange to Elmhurst to West Chicago, all from its campus in Glen Ellyn.

That litany of good things makes the ongoing torrent of bad news from and about COD leadership all the more outrageous for those of us who live and pay taxes in the school’s district.

The recent hiring of a $250-an-hour public relations firm, for instance, fits the textbook definition of irony perfectly. Spending taxpayer money to convince those same taxpayers that you didn’t waste their money is so ludicrous on its face that one wonders if the board members piled out of a clown car when they arrived at the meeting where this decision took place.

“I think it’s clear that there is need for a PR firm to help the public understand what the true facts are,” board Chairwoman Erin Birt said.

It seems that “true facts” about the college are emerging on an almost daily basis, and the public doesn’t seem to be having any trouble understanding them: • Carla Burkhart, a member of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors, has received more than $630,000 in no-bid contracts. Her graphic design firm, Herricane Graphics, was given contracts in 2012 and 2014 for designing signage worth a total

of more than $186,000. Change orders on the contracts have hiked the total payments, according to board documents.

• The Chicago Tribune, citing law enforcement and other sources, reported Monday that the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office has issued grand jury subpoenas for records relating to expenses for school administrators at Waterleaf, the restaurant on campus. The Tribune has reported COD President Robert Breuder and other administrators expensed more than $190,000 on food and drinks in the past three years at Waterleaf.

• Dan Bailey, a candidate in the upcoming election for COD Board of Trustees, claimed more than $2 million was handed out to College of DuPage Foundation board members without having to submit a competitive bid.

Bailey’s allegations prompted Birt to launch a “review” of the practice.

This is all on top of alleged fraud at the college’s radio station, Breuder’s sweetheart deal to step down as president with an extra $762,000 in his pocket after an embarrassing email leaked, and the board’s continued dithering on whether to allow an audit of its finances.

Students at the school pay $140 per credit hour. That, and taxpayers across the suburbs, in multiple counties, are paying for all of this.

This was in violation of a 2002 federal law that directed all government-related email on government servers. Later, many of her emails were subpoenaed. Defending state champion Lemont begins season Despite losing strong class of seniors, Indians look to pick up where they left off

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Trying to follow up a storybook season that resulted in a program’s first state championship isn’t an easy task.

Nor is trying to do so after losing a senior class that featured four Division-I players.

But the 2015 Lemont baseball team isn’t going to shy away from that challenge as this group looks to leave its own mark.

“We’ve talked about it,” Lemont coach Brian Storako said. “What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?

The seniors from last year left theirs.

What does this year’s team want to be remembered for?”

Obviously, there are big holes to fill as departed pitchers Jake Latz and Charlie Wright combined for 18 wins on the mound last spring and the trio of Mike Papierski, Mike Wisz and Jake Terrazas nearly drove in 100 runs.

But the cupboard is far from dry, beginning with a pitching staff that returns four contributors from last year. Leading the way is Garrett Acton, who was 5-2 last season with an ERA of 2.30 in 51 2/3 innings of work.

ing staff should be a strong suit and our defense will be a strong point. We lost a lot of innings [on the mound] but we still have some innings back for as young as we are.

“And I think we will have the ability to score runs. Our team speed will go up and we will be able to move runners around and steal some bases.”

The Indians return a big bat in junior Nick Wisz, who hit .300 with 31 RBIs as a sophomore. Mike Gralla also eclipsed the .300 mark.

“We will need timely hitting,” Storako said. “We aren’t necessarily looking to play small ball but we will have the ability to do so. It’s going to be different, we aren’t going to be able to just sit back and hit doubles all along.”

Lemont began the season with a 10-0 loss to Sandburg on March 23 and a 5-4 defeat to Lockport on March 29.

The squad will begin South Suburban conference play on April 6 against TF North and Storako expects the league to be strong this season.

“I think it is going to be better as a whole,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting into it, I feel like the entire conference is going to be real solid.”

Mayor’s Message The required BASSET training law for Cook County alcohol servers takes efect July 1, 2015. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) will now require all on-premises alcohol servers and “bouncers,” identiied as anyone whose job description entails checking identiication for entry into a liquor establishment, in Cook County to complete a four-hour Beverage Alcohol Sellers/ Servers Education & Training (BASSET) class by July 1, 2015 or within 120 days of the date of employment if employed after July 1, 2015. Additional information has been mailed to all Village liquor license holders. For further information and class locations, please refer to the Illinois Liquor Control Commission website, www.ILCC.illinois.gov.

The consequence of serving alcohol to minors does not only apply to licensed establishments. According to the ILCC, when underage kids drink alcohol, 65% of the time it is consumed at home or at a friend’s house. The Illinois Social Host Law of January 2013 holds adults accountable for underage drinking that occurs in the home, regardless if you are the one who provides the alcohol and regardless if you are home or not.

With prom and graduation right around the corner, parents and adults should know that if you allow or host a party in your house and provide alcohol to people under age 21 (or know or should know that they are drinking alcohol), you are guilty of a Class A misdemeanor with a maximum of $2,500 ine and up to one year in jail. In addition, according to the ILCC, if a minor who is drinking at your house injures or kills someone, you are guilty of a Class 4 felony which could result in both a ine and/or jail time of up to three years in prison and ines up to $25,000. The ILCC provides tips for parents about holding conversations with your kids and awareness information. As responsible parents, you need to not only prevent access to alcohol in your home, but let your kids know where you stand on underage drinking through conversations about consequences and provided them the tools to make good decisions about drinking in the scenarios they may encounter. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, deaths from drug overdose have been rising steadily over the past two decades and have become the leading cause of injury death in the United States. Every day in the U.S., 120 people die as a result of drug overdose, and another 6,748 are treated in emergency departments for the misuse or abuse of drugs. Lemont is no exception when it comes to prescription drug, heroin, and other drug overdose resulting in death.

To this end, to bring awareness to young adults, teens and parents, the (not)INVINCIBLE, multi-organization event was created. On April 16, from 6:30-9:00 p.m., at the Lemont High School Performing Arts Center, attendees will listen to informational presentations that will encourage proactive and wise life choices. In addition, the “Hall of Info” includes organizations providing information on what they have available in town to ofer young adults from music, youth groups, arts, sports, clubs, outreach, support, counseling, and the list goes on. Some fantastic rale prizes will be ofered as well, including reserved graduation tickets at Old Quarry. Also, LHS students will receive extra credit for attending. This is a very valuable event to bring more awareness to the community of what our young adults are faced with, what opportunities are available to them, and a great opportunity for parents to get the conversation of positive life choices lowing. Channel 6 Volunteers Needed Our community cable Channel 6 station is in need of volunteers to tape the live Village Board meetings which normally occur the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. In addition, taping of occasional events on an as needed basis will be required.
