LEMONT – Historian Jim Gibbons will mark the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s death with a presentation on the similarities between presidents Lincoln and John F. Kennedy at 8:30 p.m.

Tuesday at the Lemont Public Library, 50 E. Wend St. Gibbons will discuss similarities that go beyond the fact both presidents were assassinated while in office.

LEMONT – The Citizens Utility Board will analyze utility bills at a free clinic for Lemont-area residents from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Lemont Township Municipal Building, 1115 Warner Ave. Residents should bring their gas, electric and phone bills with them to the event for a one-on-one consultation on ways to lower their utility costs.

Burr Ridge man dies after being caught in burning vehicle

BURR RIDGE – A 51-year old Burr Ridge man died in a vehicle fire April 3, according to a news release from the Illinois State Police.

According to the release, the man, who was not identified, was northbound on Interstate 55 just south of County Line Road when he swerved off the road. The man swerved into a semitrailer that was pulled over to the side of the road.

The vehicle became engulfed in flames, and the man was trapped inside.

A portion of I-55 was closed while crews handled the crash scene.

The village of Lemont tapes its board meetings at 7 p.m. every second and fourth Monday of the month.

Fremont Street is one of the roads the village of Lemont has scheduled for resurfacing this year, pending municipal funding from the state.

Schafer said it is because none of the roads are at level one and in need of immediate repair the village feels it can delay its decisions on the road projects.

He said the village typically bids out its road resurfacing projects in May, but it is not uncommon to bid in July.

While the 2016 state budget is uncertain, Schafer said the village does know the state took back funds from Motor Fuel Tax to balance the 2015 budget.

He said the reduction in those funds, which is between $30,000 and $40,000, will not have much impact on the village’s 2015 budget.

LEMONT – Like many municipalities in the state, the village of Lemont is waiting to see how much funding it will receive from the state for the upcoming fiscal year.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has proposed reductions in shared municipal funding from the state, but municipalities do not expect to know what that funding will look like until the state passes a fiscal year 2016 budget this summer.

With its own 2016 budget due to be ratified before the state’s budget, the village has chosen to suspend some of its road resurfacing projects and major departmental expenditures, such as capital equipment.

Lemont Village Manager George Schafer said the village will re-evaluate in July which road projects it will pay for this year after the state passes its budget.

“It really gives us an opportunity to see what cuts will be made [before making budget decisions],” he said.

The village is scheduled to do resurfacing this year on Julia, Grant, Holmes, Fremont and Porter streets, which an initial 2016 capital improvements budget projected could cost $445,000.

The village will still budget to resurface streets where it is replacing water mains: Ledochowski Street, from McCarthy Road to Schultz Street; and Crestview Drive, from Keepataw Drive to Hillview Drive.

Schafer said the public works department evaluates the conditions of roads and classifies them by level to determine how immediately they need to be resurfaced.

He said all the roads scheduled to be resurfaced this year are at level two, which are roads that should be resurfaced in the near future.

Public Works Director Ralph Pukula said level two is described as “streets with pavement settlement along the curbline with many base failures, deteriorating at an accelerated rate due to drainage.”

Teachers invent books tailored to special needs kids

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Kate Ryan and Heather McCarthy know how difficult it can be for children with special needs to fit in with other children.

So, the two Oak Lawn teachers have come up with a customizable book that highlights what makes a child with special needs the same as their peers, while acknowledging his or her differences.

The project is called Someone Special Uniquely Personalized Books, which Ryan and McCarthy hope to have running by the summer. “[The book is] a great talking point for teachers or parents about why you should be nice to people, even if they look or act differently than you,” said Ryan, a Lemont resident.

The idea for the book came from McCarthy, whose daughter, Maya, has propionic acidemia, a rare condition that prevents the body from processing certain proteins.

When Maya was starting school, McCarthy did not want her to be treated differently from the other students, but wanted people at the school to be aware of her condition.

Her solution was to create an illus-

With all the different special needs children can have, Ryan and McCarthy want to allow parents to be as specific about their child’s condition as they need, as well as use the terminology they want.

They also eventually want the stories to cover more social situations than going to school.

Renee Koehler is replacing Mark McMahon, who chose not to run for re-election this year.

Koehler took the time to answer quesRenee tions by email from Koehler Suburban Life Reporter Dan Farnham about why she is joining the board and what she hopes to accomplish.

Dan Farnham: Why did you decide to run for school board?

Koehler: I feel that I now have a good balance of my personal and professional life so that I can devote the time needed to give back to my community

and serve on the high school board. I feel that my skills will complement the skills of the current board and I look forward to working with the current board and our superintendent, Dr. [Mary] Ticknor. I have volunteered at the high school over the last 18 months as a member of the curriculum committee, and I have served as the secretary of the Lemont High School Educational Foundation in the last year. These experiences have given me the privilege to work with and get to know the members of the school board, faculty/staff and Dr. Ticknor.

I look forward to taking part in the decision making process to continue the positive accomplishments of the current level and assist in enhancing the level of education at LHS. Farnham: What are the biggest issues facing Lemont High School?

LEMONT – Lemont had a predictably low voter turnout for Tuesday’s election, which had no contested races in the village.

Less than 5 percent of registered voters in Lemont participated in the election.

The Lemont Village Board of Trustees race was supposed to include challengers Kevin Cliff and Rick Ligthart, but they were removed from the ballot in January because of errors made in their candidate filing papers.

The election results include: • Debby Blatzer, Rick Sniegowski and Ron Stapleton were all re-elected on four-year terms to their positions on the Lemont Village Board of Trustees.

• In Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A, newcomer Damon Ascolani joined incumbents Cindy Kelly, Al Malley and Dave Molitor in winning four-year terms on the Board of Education. Ascolani replaces board member Mike Aurelio.

SB 1 is a catastrophe OUR VIEW for Lemont schools State senators seeing signs Last fall, I issued a joint correspondence with Lemont High School District 210 Superintendent Dr. Mary Ticknor regarding Senate Bill 16, which recently was reintroduced as Senate Bill 1. We again want to warn you about the catastrophic impact of SB 1, which could result in a loss of nearly $2 million from our schools.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has COMMUNITY spoken at length about the VOICE concept of “sacrifice” – Courtney something your local school Orzel districts know well. We have held ourselves accountable to our taxpayers and community and learned to do more with less, while remaining high achieving districts.

District 113A made significant sacrifices as a result of its financial crisis in 2009, including eliminating 25 percent of our teaching staff, cutting all extra-curricular programs and increasing our class sizes. It took significant effort to overcome these obstacles, but District 113A was taken off of financial watch last May, and recently received a perfect score on the state’s financial profile.

District 113A spends significantly less than the state average, both instructionally (almost $2,200 less per pupil) and operationally (almost $2,500 less per pupil). Our average instructional expenditure per pupil is less than $5,000; many districts spend more than twice that amount.

According to SB 1’s latest models, in the best case scenario, District 113A stands to lose $1,088,879 annually in state funding; District 210 will lose $614,000. As it is, we already receive only a prorated amount of General State Aid. Both school districts are heavily reliant on property taxes, but the state aid we receive is just as vital in our budgets.

Such significant cuts in state financial aid will result in negative effects on the students we serve. District 113A would like to restore band and choir into the school day, bring back an elementary art teacher, and continue to reduce our class sizes. In most school districts, these are basic, fundamental programs for students.

Losing more than $1 million in state aid will effectively shut the door on any chance of being able to bring back these basics to our district, let alone give us the opportunity to explore other fundamental programs such as full-day kindergarten and STEM enhancements. Lemont High School’s programming and opportunities for students also would be impacted significantly by such a decrease in state funding.

We support the notion that all Illinois school districts should be adequately and equitably funded. However, SB 1 in its current form will have a catastrophic impact on our students in Lemont.

To hear state Sens. Michael Connelly and Chris Nybo describe it, there’s a new mood in Springfield.

Connelly and Nybo, who between them represent most of DuPage County in the Illinois Legislature, stopped by the Suburban Life newsroom the other day to chat about what’s going on in Springfield and their priorities for the immediate future.

One of the things that stood out during the discussion was their assertion that there’s an entirely new atmosphere at the state capitol. To some degree that’s to be expected whenever there’s a change in the governor’s office – was anyone sorry to see Rod Blagojevich depart, regardless of who replaced him? – but what Connelly and Nybo described was an environment where true bipartisanship has a chance to thrive.

Imagine that, in Springfield of all places.

Connelly and Nybo described how Gov. Bruce Rauner has made it a habit to share meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – with legislators of both parties, on a regular basis. Connelly mentioned he has access to the governor via text message (one imagines that’s a privilege that would be quickly revoked if it was abused) and said that’s common now, and a far cry from his previous lack of access.

You don’t have to think back very far to remember dissension not only between

the parties, but within the parties in Springfield. Conflict between then-Gov. Pat Quinn and House Speaker Michael Madigan led to the watered-down pension reform law that seems likely to meet its demise in the courts. With Republicans reduced to a superminority and needing only Democratic votes to pass legislation and a Democratic governor in office, it was still excruciatingly difficult for meaningful bills to get passed.

A cynic might see Rauner’s overtures and dismiss it as mere window-dressing designed to elicit responses like this very editorial. But that would be a great length to go to just to fool some newspaper editors. Plus, the recent bipartisan effort to close a $1.6 billion gap in the 2015 budget, keeping state services and programs from shutting down, certainly showed a willingness of the two parties to work together, no matter how you feel about the deal itself.

It’s no surprise Connelly and Nybo, both Republicans, feel a sense of optimism now that their party controls one of the branches of state government. But the available evidence, so far, seems to support their assertion that there really is a difference in the way things are being done now. We can only hope this will continue, with the 2016 budget on the horizon and a likely need for another stab at pension reform. From here, the issues only get more difficult to tackle.

What’s all this talk of late about full-day kindergarten all over the place? Kindergarten was never meant to be a full day.

It was supposed to be an introduction to schooling for the young child. A full day is too long for the young child. What’s going to happen is the children are going to learn to hate school because they’re there too long. It seems to be that the backers of full-day kindergarten are the parents who want to work instead of being home with their children. My theory is that if you cannot afford to spend time at home with your children and just have one parent working, then maybe you shouldn’t be having children.

Francesca’s Amici in downtown Elmhurst, a destination for rustic Italian favorites, has sister restaurants in the suburbs such as La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville.

My dining companion couldn’t resist the fish either, and helped polish off the generous serving. With thoughts still lured by dessert, half the pizza became takeout for lunch the next day.

And then the dessert list arrived. We were torn between such choices as flourless chocolate cake and gelato, but went with the server’s recommendation: mascarpone

cheesecake with passion-fruit glaze, perched on a polenta shortbread cookie. Pretty as a picture, it arrived on a plate drizzled with creme anglaise and topped with a raspberry nestled in a mint leaf. It paired well with a frothy cappuccino.

It was a sweet finish to our night out. And the romantic setting, complete with a great musical soundtrack, remained conducive to conversation, no mean feat in a popular restaurant.

ELMHURST – In the mood to let seasoned pros do the cooking, we decided to make our first visit to Francesca’s Amici. It inhabits a warm, sophisticated space in downtown Elmhurst near the York Theatre.

The spot is part of the regional collection of Francesca’s Italian restaurants, each with its own name. Among other suburban locations are La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville.

Guiding us in from the dark, a glowing sign reading Amici (Italian for friends) crowns the inviting bar area off the entrance.

The dining room is stylish with sleek booths and banquettes, and an artistic array of sepia photographs of people and places in Italy, capped with an undulating ceiling of curving beams set off by rolled copper mesh giving off a subtle sheen.

Our server made us feel instantly welcome, and we soon had a small plate of freshly grated Parmesan to accompany a carafe of herbed olive oil for dipping our bread.

An appetizer of scallops (capesante) in a bed of tomato risotto hit spicy notes to complement the creamy texture of the shellfish.

Vowing to leave room for dessert, my dining companion selected a pizza with sausage, mushroom and his go-to spinach. He’d never been satisfied with the standard portion of spinach, until this pizza arrived, transformed from 2-D to 3-D by a tower of wonderfully prepared greens atop the pie.

“I’m in awe,” he said at first sight.

The fresh spinach tasted lightly sauteed with garlic, and he kindly shared a portion with me as an added side dish for my seafood plate.

I ordered the tilapia paesana, expecting the thin fish I’ve encountered at the market. Instead, a plump, wonderfully moist fillet appeared, delicately breaded and smothered with a colorful melange of shredded

LEMONT – The Lemont softball program has experienced a lot of success on the diamond in recent years, and this spring should be no different.

Coming off a 23-win campaign in 2014, this year’s Indians squad has a wealth of talent at its disposal and has charged out of the gate with five quality victories.

Leading the offense is a pair of Division-I recruits in senior shortstop Rylie Jay and junior second baseman Maddy Vermejan. Jay, a Western Illinois recruit, batted .491 with 12 doubles, seven home runs and 48 RBIs as a junior while Vermejan, who has committed to Southern Illinois, hit .477 with 13 doubles, eight homers, 40 RBIs and 54 runs scored last season.

Also back is senior catcher Lauren May, senior center fielder Elaina Latz, senior outfielder Lisa Jaworski, senior first baseman Rachel Uher and junior third baseman Anna Smagacz.

“We are excited about this year,” Lemont coach Chris Traina said.

“We’ve got a lot of returning players and we are confident with our pitchers on the mound. The kids are working hard and they all get along. That helps make the team jell.”

Although the Indians lack experience within the pitching circle, as two new faces in junior Dana Threet and sophomore Jade Mardjetko will handle most of the innings, the head coach believes the girls will rally around the newcomers.

“They just need to get out there and give us what they can,” Traina said.

“Everyone on the team believes in them 100 percent and they are doing a nice job for us.

Indians baseball racks up 43 runs en route to doubleheader sweep SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The Lemont girls soccer team improved to 4-1-1 on the young season and 2-0 in the South Suburban conference after defeating Eisenhower 3-0 April 6.

Joy Drassler scored a pair of goals and Mairead Ruane had an assist. Michelle Jerantowski made two saves in goal to record the shutout, her fourth on the spring.

On April 1, the Indians wrapped up the York tournament with a 0-0 draw against the host Dukes. Jerantowski had six saves.

Lemont will hit the road next week for matches against Shepard on April 14 and Oak Lawn on April 16.

BASEBALL Lemont brought out the bats in a doubleheader sweep of TF North on April 6, scoring a combined 43 runs in the two games.

The Indians opened with a 20-0 win in five innings. Jake Caballero was 4 for 4 with a triple, three runs and two RBIs while Nick Wisz was 4 for 5 with three runs scored.

Garrett Acton was perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs and Dom Connolly was 2 for 5 with a double and two runs driven in.

On the mound, pitchers Mike Connolly and Ben Sabourin combined to strike out nine while allowing just three hits.

In the nightcap, Lemont posted a 23-1 victory behind the pitching of Nate Madej, who struck out 12 while yielding one hit in four innings.

The Indians had picked up their first win of the season April 4 when they knocked off Stagg 5-2.

After returning from their spring break trip to Louisville today, Lemont is set to take on Wheaton North in a nonconference road matchup Saturday.

The team resumes conference play April 13 and 14 against TF South.

BOYS TENNIS The Lemont boys tennis team posted a perfect 5-0 shutout against Chicago Christian Monday in the Indians first home meet of the spring.

Faraz Longi was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles and Juan Diaz-Sanin picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.

Nick Urban and Nathaniel Burner cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, Will Totura and Matt Loris won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles and Aldo Pizzoferrato and Matt Uthupan notched a forfeit win at No. 2 doubles.

On April 4, the Indians began the 2015 season by going 2-1 at the Lincoln-Way East quad, defeating Reavis 3-2 and Minooka 4-1 before falling 4-1 to the host school.

Against Reavis, Totura and Peter Rogers won in singles action, while Urban and Burner emerged with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles.
