The Archdiocese of Chicago is asking the village of Lemont to demolish the former St. Patrick School, adjacent to St. Patrick Parish on Illinois Street. as the first school in Lemont to offer secondary education.

The village of Lemont Planning and Economic Development department cited the building’s place as part of the Lemont skyline in its recommendation to deny the demolition application.

The report noted that while the building has deteriorated, particularly the roof, there are no safety concerns that would require demolition

It also said the high cost of repairs are because the archdiocese has failed to make needed repairs for at least 10 years.

Barbara Buschman, who heads the commission, said the archdiocese representatives at the meeting were brief in their explanation of why they wanted to demolish the building.

“I was kind of disappointed,” she said. “I thought that they would make a presentation.”

O’Malley said the archdiocese is “in the process of evaluating available options acceptable to the church and community at large.” He said he could not elaborate on what those options would be other than demolishing the school.

Buschman said a couple of developers expressed interest in looking at the building to see if it is worth renovating, but the archdiocese has said it will not sell the building.

The building is adjacent to the St. Patrick Church, and the archdiocese has said it is against its policy to sell property that close to a church building.

O’Malley also said the archdiocese is hesitant to sell property that could be utilized in the future.

LEMONT – The village of Lemont’s Historic Preservation Commission unanimously voted Feb. 12 to deny a petition by the Archdiocese of Chicago to demolish the former St. Patrick School on Illinois Street.

Archdiocese director of facilities Kevin O’Malley said the archdiocese will appeal the decision to the Lemont Village Board.

The archdiocese has said the 1880s building has deteriorated to the point that it is unusable and repairs would be too costly.

The building was closed 12 years ago after it was determined to be unsafe. The archdiocese estimates it would cost $1.25 million just to make the building safe.

However, because the building is in a historic district, the archdiocese needs approval from the village to tear it down.

Proponents of saving the building, many of whom attended the meeting, said it is historically significant as one of the buildings constructed with limestone from the Lemont quarries and

LEMONT – As members of the United Steelworkers have gone on strike at nine oil refineries across the nation, the USW 7-517 Lemont is negotiating with the Lemont Citgo Refinery on its own contract.

The local union has been working on a 24-hour rolling extension of a contract that expired at midnight Feb. 1.

Though they have their own local issues to work out, local union chapter president Mike Hendry said the labor contract at the local level will not be completed until the USW and Royal Dutch Shell reach an agreement in their national negotiations.

“Even if we have a local agreement signed, it wouldn’t be finished until the national agreement is signed,” he said.

Citgo did not provide a statement regarding the negotiations in time for publication.

Hendry said the dispute between the two sides is not about wages.

“While we’re all in favor of huge raises, our heart is about staffing and health and safety,” he said.

LEMONT – The Lemont Chamber of Commerce will again team up with the Little Mountain Community Theatre for a fundraiser: the Name That Price Community Dinner and Game Show from 6 to 10 p.m. Feb. 27 at Crystal Grand Banquets, 12416 Archer Ave., Lemont.

Little Mountain Community Theatre members will host a “Price is Right”-themed game show, giving attendees chances to win prizes donated by local businesses.

Last year, the newly formed Little Mountain Community Theatre made its community debut by performing a murder-mystery dinner show for a chamber event.

Chamber Executive Director Glenn Pasiewicz said in a chamber news release the LMCT has helped the chamber create an entertaining night out for adults for its annual fundraiser.

“We’re hoping that people throughout the community will get a group of co-workers, neighbors, family mem-

bers, or friends together for a night that includes dinner, drinks, music, and plenty of game show antics,” he said in the release.

“Last year’s murder mystery was well-attended and a lot of fun,” Pasiewicz said. “We’re looking to build on that by offering another unique night out.”

Little Mountain Community Theatre President Sandy Doebert said in the release that she is excited to be working with the chamber again.

“We are thrilled to have been asked by the chamber of commerce to partner with them once again for their annual event,” she said. “We hope that our production experience will add to the evening, creating a fun night for everyone.”

Tickets are $50 each, with tables of 10 selling for $450.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to the Lemont Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund.

He said those prices have more to do with the source from where the oil is being bought.

“It’s a fallacy to say the price at the pump is affected whether we are or aren’t on strike,” he said. [we] were very excited,” Pasiewicz said.

“This year, we’re looking at 53 vendors.”

Pasiewicz said there will be a variety of businesses at the expo, including retail shops, health care professionals, home and beauty professionals, wellness groups and restaurants.

He credits the increased participation to an overall improvement in the economy, as well as a more active role the chamber has taken recruiting businesses for the event.

This is a response to a Feb. 6 Sound Off about “Don’t use church for speed trap.”

I say good for Lemont police for possibly preventing an accident. If that’s where they have to sit and catch the speeders, good for them, and if the person didn’t like it, it’s probably because they’re speeding through there. I wish somebody would sit on the Frontage Road. They use the Frontage Road from Lemont Road to Woodward [Ave.] as an alternate [Interstate] 355. They speed through here; they drop garbage. I’m paying taxes, but there’s no one ever sitting and checking the speeders here.

Where’s the religious tolerance?

Why do people feel compelled to denigrate other religions and then wonder why there are consequences to their actions?

Freedom of speech means you “can,” but does it mean you “should”? Where is the humor in mocking any religion, whether it be through political cartoons comparing Mohammed to a dog, “Saturday Night Live”-type programs making fun of Muslims and Christians, so-called “artistic” displays placing Christ immersed in urine, protesters making a mockery of religious rites for fallen servicemen at cemeteries, etc.?

Wouldn’t the world be a better place if all of us recognized how sacred each individual religion is to the followers of that religion?

Unexpected flood can’t stop learning

You may have heard that we had some unexpected – and certainly, unwanted – excitement a couple of weeks ago.

On Feb. 8, a fire alarm sounded in the building. Eugene Goldsmith, a Buildings and Grounds team member who lives across the street from the school, was COMMUNITY first on the scene and discovered water flooding the buildVOICE ing’s first floor – including the MARY TICKNOR elevator shaft, which caused the alarm. His quick response prevented the situation from becoming worse, but the damage already done was extensive.

A water pipe in the ceiling of the first floor came apart at the elbow joint, which led to several inches of water covering most of the first floor of the building, including seven classrooms, two computer labs and nearly all of our PPS Office.

It was evident quite quickly that our students, faculty and staff would be getting an unexpected day off.

We wasted no time calling in the professionals. ServPro, which specializes in these types of situations, immediately was brought on site. Its employees worked until 2:30 a.m., and then were back on campus all day the following day. Their work made it possible for us to resume classes on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

The classrooms, departmental offices and restroom facilities were usable when we reconvened after being treated with the appropriate anti-microbial and anti-fungal agents.

However, the computer labs were a different story. The power outlets in these labs are in the floor, and the flood obviously posed a major problem. Classes that regularly meet in these labs were temporarily relocated, but the computer labs were back in business when our students returned from the Presidents Day weekend.

Because of damage to the carpet and drywall, we knew it would take several days for the PPS Office to be inhabitable. As a result, those who typically call the PPS Office home were relocated throughout the building. However, these moves went off without a hitch, and during a week-long relocation, our students had the same services available to them as they would any other day.

Insurance will cover an overwhelming majority of the costs associated with the flood, but it could have cost us something that insurance can’t cover – lost instruction time. I’m happy to report Lemont High School is back to its regular state – dry, and free from flooding. Our faculty, staff and students smoothly dealt with any inconveniences. And the days after the flood included the same quality instruction that is the norm at Lemont High School.

She had the most generous, loving heart that touched many lives with her presence. Her family and friends will always be thankful for the gift of her life. Lemont advances to regional final Indians extend streak to seven

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com WESTCHESTER – Despite having three juniors and one senior on its roster, the youthful Lemont girls basketball team is playing well beyond its years.

After wrapping up the South Suburban Blue conference title last week, the Indians extended their winning streak to seven games by knocking off the host school 53-49 in a St. Joseph Class 3A regional semifinal Wednesday.

Not only did 12th-seeded Lemont [17-11] defeat the No. 5 Chargers on their home floor, the Indians did it while overcoming a 20-5 run by St. Joe in the second half which turned an 11-point lead into a four point deficit midway through the fourth quarter.

“That was the best part of the night,” Lemont coach Bill Bozue said. “And that’s what we’ve been doing lately. They never give up and they keep playing hard. We might make some mistakes but they always play hard.”

As has been the case throughout the winter, the visitors received balanced scoring, led by the 16 points of freshman Emma Bozue.

Junior Marissa Dyer had 13 points, sophomore Shannon O’Donnell totaled nine and sophomore Ali Kramer finished with seven.

“That’s the beauty of it,” Bozue said. “I can’t tell you how many different leading scorers we’ve had. Teams have to play all five kids whom are on the floor. All are averaging somewhere between 8.2 and 6.7 points [per game].”

Next up for the Indians is a date with Glenbard South in the regional final tonight at 7 p.m. The Raiders are almost the complete opposite of Lemont with four senior starters, three of whom are four-year

“We played them the first game of the year and now we play them in the regional championship,” the coach said. “It’s a bit of a measuring stick to see how far we’ve come.”

The Indians opened the postseason with a 65-10 win over Chicago Noble/Rauner on Feb. 17. Paige Terrazas scored 10 points to lead the way.

Lemont closed out the regular season with a 39-33 win against Chicago Christian on Feb. 12. Kramer totaled 14 points and Quinn Shereck chipped in with 10.

Two days earlier, the squad wrapped up SSC Blue championship after picking up a 59-41 decision against Tinley Park as Dyer poured in 16 points.

The Indians, who won their first title since 2009, finished with a 10-3 league mark. The sophomore team also won the conference title after posting a record of 12-1 and 24-5 overall.

Six Lemont wrestlers advance to state tournament

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com The Lemont wrestling program has had a lot of success on the mats in recent years, including third- and fourth-place team finishes in 2010 and 2011 and seven individual state qualifiers in 2012.

And the Indians added another chapter to their growing list of accomplishments last Saturday when six wrestlers qualified for the IHSA individual state tournament out of the De La Salle Class 2A sectional.

“I thought the kids wrestled real well over the weekend,” Lemont coach John St. Clair said. “We had to beat some kids that we hadn’t beat during the year and we did that for the most part. We seem to be wrestling real well here at the end.

We seem to be peaking at the right time.”

Leading the charge was Jimmy Brennan, who captured the title at 145 pounds with a pin over Jonathan Szdlo of Riverside-Brookfield in the champi-

onship match.

“He’s a four year varsity kid and this is his third time being a state qualifier,” St. Clair said. “The only year he didn’t qualify is when he had surgery and was out. He’s doing a fantastic job this year, not only with wrestling but also being a leader. He is definitely a motivator. He’s having a lot of success and helping other kids do the same.”

Sophomore Egan Berta was third at 138 and Jake Kirkman finished third at 152. Both Berta and Kirkman were state qualifiers last year as well.

“They also made it down as freshman and they are hoping to take the next step,” the coach said. “The main goal is to make it to the podium. But both are in very competitive brackets so they will have to wrestle their best.”

Junior John Polk came in third at 170 while seniors Dimitri Giatras and Ryan Glynn punched their ticket to the state meet for the first time after finishing fourth at 160 and 126, respectively.

“Dimitri didn’t make it out of the regional last year,” St. Clair said. “So from not making the sectional to making it downstate, he obviously has grown as a wrestler. And Ryan fell one match short last year. He has worked very hard to get to this point.”

After the individual portion of the state series wraps up, Lemont will return to the team portion Tuesday when the Indians go up against De La Salle in a Class 2A sectional at Oak Forest with a state berth on the line.

“This was our first time winning the regional since 2011,” St. Claire said.

“It’s a lot of fun. Our sport is an individual sport but it’s unique, it melds both of them [individual and team] together. It’s a lot of fun to compete for each other and it is an opportunity to make it to the biggest stage as a team.

“De La Salle is tough, they are hardnosed and they are well-coached. Everyone who steps on the mat has to be ready.”

SPORTS BRIEF Lemont pitcher gets preseason third-team All-American nod University of Illinois junior pitcher Tyler Jay received a lot of recognition before the start of the 2014 baseball season.

The Lemont graduate was named a Baseball America and NCBWA preseason third-team All-American and also selected to the Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List and the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List.

As a sophomore, Jay notched 10 saves and a 4-1 record with an ERA of 1.94, striking out 47 in 41.2 innings pitched.

Through the first four games of this season, Jay has recorded a win and a save to go along with a 0.00 ERA and seven strikeouts through six innings so far.
