Basketball brings Lithuanian families from Lemont to their homeland

Lituanica Coach Stepes Zilys said Lithuanians sometimes refer to basketball as the second religion.

Zilys remembers growing up when the Baltic Sea nation was part of the Soviet Union. He said people were excited when the best Lithuanian basketball team played the top Russian team each year.

“There was nobody on the streets at that time,” he said. “Everybody’s watching it. That was huge.”

Zilys said Lithuanian immigrants will tell their children stories about the great Lithuanian basketball players to help them relate to their culture.

He said it was different playing on a team representing the U.S. “It was weird,” he said.

“I didn’t feel like it was the American team. Most of the

kids were Lithuanian. But [opponents] looked at us different.”

Zilys said Lituanica tries to use basketball as a way to preserve Lithuanian culture in the U.S. “We try to run our practice in Lithuanian strictly,” he said. “It’s not all the time possible because we have some non-Lithuanian kids and Lithuanian kids who don’t speak Lithuanian.”

Zilys said his players take pride in wearing the Lituanica uniform and representing their common heritage. It’s the same feeling for the coaches and parents who remember living in Lithuania.

“It’s huge when you are from the foreign country and you’re missing it all the time, your parents and your friends,” he said.

LEMONT – A team from the Lituanica Basketball Academy in Lemont for children age 14 and younger visited Lithuania this summer to participate in the World Lithuanian Sports Games.

Lituanica, which practices at the Lithuanian World Center in Lemont, is mostly made up of local Lithuanian-American children and teens.

Coach Stepes Zilys organized the two-week trip, which he said he tries to do every second year with the players.

“Our goal is not just strictly basketball,” he said. “Some of the kids, they’ve never seen it before, Lithuania, and even the parents who were born here, they haven’t seen it.”

According to the Lithuanian Union of Sports Federations website, the games included about 2,600 athletes from 21 countries participating in a variety of sports.

The event lasts four days, but Zilys scheduled several other friendly games through connections he has with coaches in Lithuania.

Eleven Lituanica players and 10 families made the trip and only one family – the Paulius family – hadn’t been to Lithuania before, Zilys said.

“It’s fun going overseas,” said Chris Paulius, a Lemont High School freshman. “[Lithuania’s] actually a lot like Michigan.”

The system also includes foreign language options, though Gricus said the translations are sometimes overly literal.

Gricus said the district will look at the viability of using other features that send out individualized notifications about behavior issues and library and cafeteria fees.

“We may not use those features initially but we want those options open to us,” she said.

Board President Cindy Kelly was excited about the new system and how it fit into the district’s goal for increased communication with parents.

“It just covers everything,” she said. “It’s comprehensive.”

The cost of the new system is an increase from the current system provided by Easy Link/Xpedite, which is a minimum of $1,200 each year, with an additional charge each time it is used.

But Gricus said the current system is basic and is not user-friendly.

She said the district is limited to one phone number and one email address per family for communications because it would have to pay for additional numbers.

Also, because the current system’s charges are based on per use fees, the district limits use primarily to emergencies and communications regarding significant events, she said.

The cost of the new system is a flat rate based on the number of students in the district, which allows for unlimited phone calls, texts and emails.

Gricus said the district will be able to use the new system to send out more messages on less urgent matters, such as school events and tests.

She said the district has gotten feedback from parents about receiving too many emails and it will be up to the district to determine how to most effectively use the new system, which could lead to an increase in phone messages.

Fall-themed festival to take place Saturday

LEMONT – A truck damaged a brick pillar on Oct. 11 holding up the overhang at Hauptman Jewelers, 1052 State St., Lemont, according to Lemont police.

Lemont Police Commander Greg Smith said the truck was pulling through the alley by the store and came too close to the overhang.

Smith said no one was hurt during the incident and no charges were filed by police.

Store owner Dave Hauptman, who was not in the store at the time of the incident, said no damage was done to the interior of the store and that the incident was not affecting business.

LEMONT – The Lemont Park District will hold its free Fall Fest from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, at Centennial Park, 16028 127th St. The event will feature a scarecrow building contest, children’s games, a jumpee, a kiddie straw maze, a costume contest, bonfires with hot dogs and s’mores, hayrides and a Lions Club chili tasting.

New attractions this year include a dog costume contest, a pumpkin shot-put competition, a Halloween makeup demo and a community official pie eating contest. Peace Freak will perform live music.

Giving spirit shines during Lemont High homecoming week Lemont High School is blessed to have a mix of wonderful students who accomplish great things in the classroom, on the stage and on the playing field. Of course, Lemont Suburban Life readers know this because they’re your kids and your neighbors.

Sometimes, however, great things cannot be measured by a score on a standardized test, a grade point average or a COMMUNITY win on the field. Our recent VOICE Homecoming Week was proof Mary of that. As always, our students demonstrated a great Ticknor deal of school spirit, building to the big game against Tinley Park on Friday night and Saturday’s Homecoming dance.

However, our student leaders took things a step further and set a precedent for future years.

A mid-week “Homecoming Bowl” featured a flag football game between the juniors and seniors, special cheerleading guests, a photo booth and other fun activities. Proceeds were contributed to “Walk with Andrew,” an organization benefiting junior Andy Podczerwinski, who continues his recovery from an accident in summer 2012, as well as to the family of Assistant Football Coach Greg Banner, whose two-year-old daughter Stefanie is battling nephroblastoma. The Lemont Food Pantry received hundreds of items that were collected through a school-wide food drive.

The senior class designed and sold its own t-shirt, which was worn on Thursday’s “Class Color Day.” With the proceeds from t-shirt sales, the Class of 2014 surprised Andy Podczerwinski with a check for approximately $1,400 to benefit “Walk with Andrew.”

Finally, this year’s Homecoming court proved to be memorable, as members of the court for each class included at least one student with special needs. Each of our students has a vote for the Homecoming Court, and the honorees with special needs genuinely have endeared themselves to their peers and were the most popular picks to represent their respective classes.

The presentation of the 2013 Homecoming Court – which included “princes” Sam Valone, Isaac Ziebell and Andy Podczerwinski, “princesses” Michaela Tauer, Annie Ernst and Autumn Rita, Homecoming King Alex Keating and Homecoming Queen Becka Konicki – made it a day to remember for all of our students, faculty and staff.

Hi, I would like to sound off about the future planning and hopefully some re-routing of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade [in Elmhurst]. Those of us that live on Spring Road, some of us don’t appreciate the candy and the torn-up lawns after the parade. Sometimes garbage [is] left behind. Since that treaty was recently signed by the U.S. Secretary of State under direction of our president, and since that treaty’s duration is specified in the treaty itself as being “forever,” the current U.S. Senate, or another U.S. Senate 20 or even 50 years from now, that eventually ratifies this treaty with a two-thirds vote, puts its provisions above anything written in the U.S. Constitution.

Let’s vote on money for parks Hello, I read where the park district would like to have more money.

As it is, I drive by the Washington Park [in Downers Grove] hundreds of times. There’s no one there. There’s a huge fancy fountain there pumping constantly, and no one’s there. I think if they need more money or want more money, I think we need a public referendum and let us vote on it. Many of the people I know have expressed the same feelings. We did not need all of the fanciness over there. It’s just costing us more and more. Please, let’s vote on it.

Support the volunteer firefighters As a local Glen Ellyn resident, I’ve donated annually to the volunteer fire department. I noticed a recent article that in 2012, donation requests were mailed to 11,400 residents and 600 business locations. Returns totaled 2,780 residents and only 67 business locations. Consider, folks, if support does not improve, they will tax us to support a paid workforce, requiring not only salaries and pensions for three, eight-hour shifts, plus funds for equipment. The current Glen Ellyn [Suburban Life] issue has an article on the needs of the fire department, including donation mailing location: Glen Ellyn volunteer fire company, P.O. box 460, Glen Ellyn, IL 60138, or drop off at the fire station. It’s my understanding that 3,500 fire department responses will occur in 2013. Thanks to the volunteers, they will be there for you and the 600 business locations. OBITUARIES ARTHUR H. DOMINICK Arthur “Art” (a.k.a Carl) H. Dominick, age 75, lifelong resident of Lemont, passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospital.

He was born May 22, 1938 in Chicago, IL, the son of Joseph and Hilda Dominick.

Art was known and loved by many people. He was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Everyone who knew him loved his quirky sense of humor, his laughter, and all those nicknames he used to come up with. His outgoing personality has gotten him many adopted “grandchildren” along the way, too. Art loved spending time with his family, being the captain of his pontoon boat, watching his grandchildren play sports and perform, fishing with his grandkids and his friends, golfing every week and his morning coffee buddies. He was the owner of Carl's Septic Service, Inc. for the past 52 years and has made a positive impact in both the industry and in his community. The hole left by his passing is immense and will be felt by many.

Art is survived by his loving wife, Patricia, his children, Kevin (MaryJean), Jean (Ken) Wright, Tim (Laura), Bridget and Patrick (Elizabeth); his grandchildren Shannon, Sean, Michael (Jenna), Katy, Melissa, Patrick, Amanda, Megan, Teresa, Rebecca, Timmy, Mary Rose, Joey, Grace, Anthony and Matthew, his brother Joe, his brothers and sisters-in law as well as many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Hilda, his brother, Rich and his granddaughter, Stephanie.

Successful student carries on family name

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Alexandra Albrecht was recently named Lemont High School’s only National Merit semifinalist for this year, continuing a generations-old tradition of successful Albrechts at the school.

Her great grandmother graduated second in her class in 1929. Her father, Chris, was valedictorian in 1983.

Her grandfather, Al, may be the most well known at the school, where he was an athletic director and teacher for a number of years.

Alexandra said that because her grandmother also worked at Central School and Old Quarry Middle School, she is used to people knowing her family.

that recognition, but it doesn’t really affect my school life,” she said.

Alexandra has found her own niche at Lemont High School, most notably playing flute in the band.

The marching band has been going to competitions this fall, and she can be seen playing a solo in the show.

“It was really scary at first because it was ‘Oh geeze, I have to play in front of all these people,’” she said.

Though her family is rooted in Lemont, Alexandra hopes to see the world.

She said she plans to study international relations and government in college. She is looking at a couple East Coast

Three lakes in DuPage County will be stocked for the beginning of rainbow trout season on Oct. 19, according to a news release from the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.

Starting at 6 a.m., Pickeral Lake at Pratt’s Wayne Woods in Wayne, Grove Lake at Wood Dale Grove in Wood Dale and Silver Lake at Blackwell in Warrenville will be stocked with between 500 and 3,100 rainbow trout per lake.

All anglers 16 and older who are not legally disabled are required to carry valid state fishing licenses with inland trout stamps to fish these lakes, according to the news release.

Three years after a series of accounting errors lead to a $40 million gap in presumed reserves and subsequent overspending, the DuPage Water Commission is one step closer to paying back its debts.

In 2011, the commission had an outstanding debt of $142 million after the accounting debacle, according to a news release from the county.

That total has been reduced to $54 million, with an additional $14 million in payment expected by the end of the fiscal year.

The commission has also reduced its operating budget by $6 million since 2011, a decrease of about 28 percent.

County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, who appointed board member Jim Zay as water commissioner, said in a statement that Zay’s leadership has “helped this crucial agency make a remarkable turn-around from the crisis it was in three years ago.”

Part of a presentation given

to the County Board at its Oct. 8 meeting touched on the elimination of a quarter-cent sales tax that pulls funding from 25 area communities to partially fund the commission. The tax is set to expire in 2016.

That expiration, which Cronin helped spearhead when he was a state senator, will help transition the commission to a water utility system instead of operating as a tax-funded body.

“Lowering the sales tax in the county will force greater financial independence and accountability at the commission, as well as help our residents and businesses,” Cronin said.

Zay said that despite hiring new leadership staff and strengthening accounting practices to increase responsibility and organization, the commission’s work is not done.

“The Water Commission has come a long way in a short amount of time, but we are still in the process of ensuring a successful future,” he said.

Part of the school’s culinary center, the stunning space is used by students Mondays and Tuesdays, but morphs into a professional operation Wednesday through Sunday.

Upon venturing inside, we received a warm greeting from the manager, who offered us a table along the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water. As we contemplated a beverage, we noticed the glassed wine cellar off the dining room holding the in-depth wine list’s international selection.

We enjoyed the sweet finish to our meal, and look forward to a return to Waterleaf for a special night out.

It’s worth noting the restaurant is near the school’s McAninch Arts Center, where touring acts and local talents show off their chops. When its $35 million renovation is completed, dinner and a show sound like a tempting combination.

Lemont comeback falls short against TF North

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CALUMET CITY – There were positives for Lemont’s football team to take away from Friday’s 41-40 loss to Thornton Fractional North, including nearly overcoming a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit.

But when each game is vital in trying to reach the postseason for a 10th consecutive season, moral victories don’t go very far. “ T h e k i d s w e r e r e s i lient and they never gave up,” Lemont coach Eric Michaelsen said. “But we didn’t play well at the beginning.

Slow starts have plagued the Indians throughout 2013, and this time around the visitors faced a 21-0 deficit after the opening six minutes.

The margin remained the same, 41-20, heading into the final 12 minutes, where Lemont rattled off three straight scores, the last of which pulled the Indians to within one point with 13 seconds remaining.

The visitors decided to go for the win with a 2-point conversion, but a pass from quarterback Ryan Dawson, who took over under center in the fourth quarter, fell incomplete. Dawson had scored the final touchdown moments earlier on a quarterback sneak.

“We had the momentum,” Michaelsen said. “I thought we would make it.”

The loss put a damper on some impressive individual performances. Julio Aleman rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns while Michael Larkins added three rushing scores. Wideout Jimmy Kepouros hauled in seven passes for 107 yards.

Now the Indians must have a short memory as they travel to take on Bremen tonight.

The Braves are currently leading the South Suburban Blue conference with a perfect 5-0 mark.

“Right now they are the class of the conference,” Michaelsen said.

“They are athletic, fast,

physical and well coached.

They run a spread offense with a good quarterback, good runners and good wide receivers. And defensively, they are very fast and aggressive.

“We will show up and hopefully play to our capability. If we play to our capability, we have a chance.”

At this point, Michaelsen is looking for an all-around complete game from his team.

“We will continue to work hard and get after it,” he said.

“We have to improve. It’s Week 8 and we should be there.”

Lynn set to hit links at state tournament Lemont senior Bridget Lynn punched a return ticket to the Class AA girls golf state tournament at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur this weekend after competing in Monday’s Homewood-Flossmoor sectional.

Lynn carded a 75, which was six strokes behind medalist Frankie Saban of Sandburg.

She easily made the qualifying cut for individuals (an 84 grabbed the final spot).

A year ago, Lynn finished in a tie for 50th place at state, which was cut down to one round because of bad weather.

Oprzedek captured the 200 freestyle (2:20.27) and the 500 freestyle (6:12.32), Lesnicki won the 200 individual medley (2:25.28) and 100 freestyle (1:00.83), and Bendle placed first in the 50 freestyle (27.72). Doherty added a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:12.22) and 100 backstroke (1:14.70).

Finishing second were Anna Ignarski (200 freestyle), Decesare (50 and 500 freestyles), Pawell (100 butterfly and 100 backstroke), Annie Callaghan (100 freestyle) and Bendle (100 breaststroke).

Lindsey Mazur placed ninth and Bridget Kunkel rounded out the scoring quintet in 13th.

But, first things first, Lemont must find a way to get by a Bremen team that is having one of its best seasons in recent memory.

The Braves have won six straight since a 54-23 loss to Andrew, including a 35-7 win over Hillcrest last week, and currently find themselves at the top of the standings in the South Suburban Blue conference.

Their defense has been stingy, allowing a combined 46 points over the past four weeks.

On the flipside, Lemont’s offense has come to life, scoring 81 points over the past two weeks.

Boys soccer teams throughout the state will begin their postseason quests this weekend and early next week, all with the goal of eventually hoisting the state championship trophy.

Lemont’s squad is surging at the right time as it hopes to start along postseason run all the way to Lincoln-Way North, home to the Class 2A state finals Nov. 8 and 9.

A year ago, the Indians lost 2-1 to Washington in a regional semifinal.

he thought of going gray can be scary formany reasons, including the difficult transition to letting your natural color emerge.

Some women wonder if they’ll still look attractive and feel sexy with gray hair. Plus, there seems to be an almost societal push for women going gray to dye their hair.

A 2010 study in Aging and Society found that while people admire gray hair on others — have you seen Helen Mirren, Emmylou Harris or Jamie Lee Curtis lately? —we’re often averse to trying out the look ourselves. A poll at prevention.com found that 71 percent of respondents said women with gray hair can be sexy, while 78 percent say the same for men.

Going gray is an art that reflects a woman’s confidence whether she’s in her 30s, 40s or 50s, said style expert Rita Hazan of the eponymous New York City salon.Women can absolutely look fabulous with gray hair, but they may have to work a bit for it, Hazan said.

“Some women look stunning and chic with gray hair, but oftentimes, gray hair needs a boost of shine,” she added.

Why do we gray?

As we age, hair starts turning gray as the hair follicles produce less color, and hair loses its pigment, Hazan said: “The lack of pigment increases the tendency to absorb chemicals and trace minerals that are often found in water,” leading to dull hair.

Genetics and environmental factors can play a role in when your hair starts to go gray.

“Studies show that smoking is known to increase the rate of graying, as is poor nutrition,” Hazan said.

People who are under a lot

of stress tend to shed more hair, according to trichologist Sandra Gilman, educational director for the Elan Center for Trichology, which studies the health of the hair and scalp.When your hair grows back, it may grow in gray.

Care for any hair To get back your hair’s shiny gloss, some women may want to use a color-corrective product that will also eliminate yellow from gray hair, Hazan said.

“To keep the shine, condition hair often,” Hazan said. “I recommend washing hair with a formula geared for gray once a week to counteract yellowing caused by the environment (sun, pollutants, hard water).

But beware because many of these products contain a blue tint that can cause a purplish cast. Avoid products with dyes, such as colored stylers, which can tarnish gray hair.”

No matter what color hair is, it should be protected with a hat fromthe sun, she added.

“Environmental damage is never good, so we have to do whatever we can to protect hair and skin.”

Dealing with feedback The decision to go gray will elicit reaction from friends, family and co-workers who may comment on the change, which can take months from start to finish.

“It is likely grays will start showing up slowly for most people,” Hazan said. To smooth the transition, a professional stylist can artfully place lowlights as the gray grows in. Or, you can wait it out, trimming off the old color until all that’s left is pure silver.

The haircut you chose “depends on an individual’s lifestyle, facial features and personal style,” Hazan said. “For gray to look chic, the cut should be modern and contemporary,” she said.

Women Are Afected Most By his Disease...

J FEE ADVICE how to avoid paying the many bank fees

ust like any other company, banks are in the business of making money. They do it by charging you fees for all sorts of things, such as overdrawing an account, going lower than a minimum balance and using another bank’s ATM. Consider this: The average checking account has the potential for 30 fees attached to it, and some have upwards of 50, according to a study from WalletHub.com. Banks provide a service and make the rules; you pay if you don’t follow them.

If you’re not an informed and proactive consumer, bank fees have a way of adding up, said Kathleen Burns Kingsbury, founder of KBK Wealth Connection and author of “How to Give Financial Advice to Couples.”

“I think it is important to note that banksmake their money on the difference between interest earned and interest paid.With the low rates, banks have had to get creative to stay profitable, and raising fees is howmost of themare doing it,” Kingsbury said.

But just because banks are charging fees doesn’t mean you have to pay. You can “reduce or eliminate bank fees by being proactive,” Kingsbury said. “Always ask for the best deal with the lowest fees, and know that when your balances are higher or you have most if not all of your accounts at one institution, often you will get a break in the fees paid.”

Here’s some advice from Kingsbury and the American Banking Association on how to avoid bank fees: 1. Know the rules. Read the notices sent to you by the bank and know what potential fees are. If you don’t understand the fine print, ask for help.

2. Make sure your account fits. Taking the time upfront to find the best account for you is time well-invested.

Reevaluate the fit of accounts annually as life circumstances change and bank offers do as well.

3.Befriend your banker. A good relationship with your local banker can help as she will alert you to savings when they become available. Customer service representatives can examine your banking patterns and suggest the best one for you.

4. Avoid overdrafts. Overdraft fees and other charges related to insufficient funds made up 61 percent of all service charges on consumer deposit accounts, according to a report by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Purchase overdraft protection or add a “cushion” amount. If the minimum balance is $500, put in $1,000, but record available funds as $500. Online services from places likeMint.com can alert you by email when the account is approaching a danger level.

5. Try online banking. Often fewer fees are associated with online banking. The overhead the bank experiences is much less when you are not there in person, so they don’t need to charge a fee.

6. Consider a credit union or community bank. These smaller institutions offer the relationship banking that is often not a priority in larger commercial banks.

7. Bundle your banking. Sometimes signing up for services like online banking, paperless statements and direct deposit can lead to free checking and savings accounts.

8. Use direct deposit. Many checking accounts are free when your paycheck or benefits check is automatically deposited each month.

9. Keep multiple accounts at your bank. Many are looking at the entire customer relationship and may offer free services if you maintain checking and savings accounts with them, for example.

10. Use your bank’s ATMs. If you must use an ATMnot affiliated with your bank, take out larger withdrawals to avoid having to go back multiple times.

11. Sign up for email or text alerts. Ask for an automatic alert when your balance falls below a certain level.

12. Ask for mercy. If you’re a first-time offender, ask the bank nicely to waive the fee, then learn from your mistake.

13. Mix and match. An astute customer will find the best deal at each bank using a larger bank for commercial loans and a community bank or credit union for personal banking.

However, don’t spread yourself so thin that you have trouble keeping track of all your accounts.

Brain trust Does age make people more susceptible to scams?

With a lifetime of experience backed up by solid values, older Americans nevertheless fall victim to an excessive amount of fraud and scams. Are you too trusting?

The prevalence of crime against older Americans has reached epidemic proportions, said Sandy Markwood, chief executive officer of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

From telemarketing scams to identity theft, home repair fraud to bogus lottery wins, the financial exploitation of boomers and seniors costs an estimated $3 billion yearly, a 12 percent increase from 2008.

“Seniors are absolutely too trusting,” said Tasha Carter, Florida’s director of consumer services. “One out of five adults over the age of 65 has been the victim of a financial scam. Eighty percent of people over age 50 have been fraud victims,” Carter said.

Seniors grew up in a more innocent time.

“They were raised to be polite and trusting. A handshake agreement sealed a deal, and you took a person at their word. Today, the world is a different place,” said Carter, who runs Operation SAFE (Stop Adult Financial Exploitation) workshops in her state.

Seniors are targeted by scammers because they are more likely to have a considerable savings account and good credit, Carter said.

“Seniors control 70 percent of the nation’s wealth, which is the reason they are targeted,” she said.

It’s not just a matter of trust, though. Science is involved, too.

A study from the University of California Los Angeles suggests that agerelated changes in the brain may increase seniors’ vulnerability to fraud.

The study found that older people have a harder time than younger people detecting what is commonly perceived as suspicious or untrustworthy facial expressions and body language. The study found that the part of the brain that assesses trust, the anterior insula, may dissipate with age.

In the study, older adults (average age 68) and younger adults (average age 23) looked at 30 photographs of faces and rated them on how trustworthy and approachable they seemed. The faces were intentionally selected to look trustworthy, neutral or untrustworthy.

Both groups reacted similarly to the trustworthy and neutral faces. But, younger adults reacted strongly to the untrustworthy faces, while the older adults did not. The older adults saw these faces as more trustworthy and more approachable than the younger adults.

Never make an insurance premium check payable to an agent; checks should always be made out to the insurance company.

Shred your documents; don’t just throw away/recycle credit card offers, bills or blank checks sent by credit card companies. ! If banking online, use a secure website (it should have “https” in the address). ! Be creative with your password. Never use your birthday or name. ! Be proactive and review

statements each month for charges or withdrawals you didn’t make. ! Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are each required by law to provide one free credit report each year.

Spread them out every four months to examine your credit. Do not Google “free credit report” or you may end up tricked into paying for the report. (Visit equifax.com, experian.com and transunion.com.) ! Add your number to the national Do Not Call list (donotcall.gov or 888-3821222). ! Be wary of unsolicited calls from your bank. Hang up and call your bank back. ! Never give any financial information over the phone.

And by curving your action line, you can make it more interesting and dynamic.

ct. 16 is National Dictionary Day, a day to celebrate the written word and Noah Webster, the creator of America’s irst dictionary.

Webster was born in Hartford, Conn., in 1758. The irst dictionary he wrote, which was published in 1806, was called “A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language” and was the irst dictionary to focus speciically on American language. America was

Learn to read a dictionary The first thing you need to know when looking up the definition of a word is the correct spelling. Words in dictionaries are listed in alphabetical order and are separated by chapters for each letter. If you aren’t sure how to spell something, knowing the first letter of a word is a good start.

But once you find the word, how do you know what it means and how to use it?

Here are common elements you’ll see described in a dictionary entry: 1. spelling: The main word is usually bolded. This will have the most common spelling of the word.

2. part of speech: Is it a noun, an adjective, pronoun, adverb or other part of speech? Knowing the part of speech will let you know how to use the word correctly.

Going vegan You wouldn’t know Austin Aries is a vegan by looking at him. One of the top stars of TNA Impact Wrestling, Aries has been a vegan for a year and a vegetarian for 12 years before that.

Aries made the switch for health reasons and animal rights, and wants to help spread the word that one can be fit, muscular, eat right — and be a vegan, if they choose.

He offers tips on how to limit or eliminate animal products: Educate yourself: “I never stop learning and seeking out the newest information on how to make improvements to my diet and fitness routines,” Aries says.

But where do you start if you’re the organizer?

“When it comes to selling, people want to know what it is,” said Anne Hofferkamp of Springfield, Ill., who has helped run numerous bake sales through her involvement in community organizations. Don’t “disguise” simple treats with mounds of colored icing, drizzle or bling.

Fruit pies, cookies, brownies and seasonal-themed goodies sell especially well at bake sales, said Hofferkamp. Cakes? Not as popular. If you do bake a cake, stick with the traditional yellow, white or devil’s food that most people are familiar with.

Other advice from Hofferkamp: n Make it pretty. If a cake has sticky frosting, for example, place toothpicks in the top of the cake to prevent plastic wrap from touching the frosting. n Mix it up. Package some items individually and some as a group (such as a dozen cake pops or cupcakes). Sell some pies whole, and others by the slice. n Make sure everything is homemade. Selling store-bought products conflicts with the idea of a bake sale. n Keep it safe. Check with your county or local health departments on where baking can be done, if you need a permit and what products may pose a safety hazard.

Mix flour, baking soda and salt in medium bowl. Set aside.

Beat butter and sugars in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add egg and 2 teaspoons of the vanilla; mix well. Gradually beat in flour mixture on low speed until well mixed. Stir in chocolate chips. Set aside.

Prepare brownie mix as directed on package, adding remaining 1 teaspoon vanilla and peppermint extract. Spread in greased 13-by-9inch baking pan.

Bake 15 minutes. Drop cookie dough by tablespoonfuls on brownie, covering the top evenly.

(Batter will spread during baking) .

Bake 20 to 25 minutes longer or until cookie top is golden brown.

Cool in pan on wire rack. Cut into bars.
