LOOKING FOR BETTER RELIABLITY AND SPEED?
What you can expect:
The s’more the merrier!

The Lake Carroll Campground Social Club thinks so. The group is dedicat ed to making its campground community even more fun for the whole family. How much more fun? Plenty. Let’s start with a bouncehouse, breakfast and “big ol’ bonfire.” Still not enough? How about some tasty treats, a parade, hay wagon rides, a golf outing, and a Halloween trunk-or-treat?
here’s nothing quite like camping. Enjoying a mobile home away from home, pulling out the lawn chairs and relaxing by a campfire under a starry sky, roast ing a hot dog and topping things off with a s’more. Life doesn’t just get any better. Or does it?
4 Lake Lifestyle | September 2022

The group of around 100 dues-paying members manage and help out with social activities and special events within the area’s five pods of sites, and there’s been a lot more buzz among the campers since the club formed just 2 years ago. Be ing one of the newer clubs in Lake Carroll, its establishment coincided with a boom of folks flocking to the community to get away from urban areas and the challenges of dealing with
Ellis Fitzgerald, who’s called Lake Carroll a second home for nearly 20 years, not only serves as the campground’s host, but as leader of the club — and a busy one at that.

the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yes indeed, life does get better — especially with the Camp ground Social Club around.
“We wanted to do something to make things more fun out here for the kids, and also for the adults,” Fitzgerald said. “We have something every weekend, and have things like a bouncy house that we set up. The purpose of the club was to raise money so that we could do those things.

The goal of the club is to provide fun activities for campers of all ages. The club is separate from Lake Carroll’s Camp ground Committee, which had been responsible for raising money for its wants and needs before Association rules were changed to prohibit that 2 years ago. The club formed in July 2020 to take the place of the committee’s fundraising efforts, and to have more members bring ideas to the table to enhance the quality of life at the campground.

“We’re a club that can establish recreational activi ties, and there are a lot of recreational activities out here already, but we have kids that sometimes want different things to do.”

The club’s activities and events are open to all of Lake Car roll’s members and their guests. The group also is very active on its private Facebook page (accessible to Lake Carroll mem bers only), promoting its many events. Children can enjoy jumping around the bounce house on weekends when it’s up, and on weekends the campground’s top popper is popping plenty popcorn for folks to enjoy.
“One of the things about private communities like Lake Car roll is that people, particularly younger people, they want more than just your golf course or your lake; they want programs that are healthy and provide exercise,” Fitzgerald said. “We want to help develop that.”
“The primary benefit is that if you want to participate in the planning, if you’re a dues-paying member you can do that,” Fitzgerald said. “Paying dues and supporting the club lets us do what we want to do — and it ben efits members in many ways; particularly the children, because they get a lot of fun out of it.”
Fitzgerald and his fellow club members are proud of the event and the work that goes into making it a day to remember.

bit of good old-fashioned fun offered to campers: rides on a hay wagon, pulled by Fitzgerald’s Allis-Chalmers tractor.

The treats and activities come courtesy of the club’s members and their dedication. Want to pitch in? Dues are just $20 a year for a family.
The long-running annual Labor Day bonfire and parade is the largest event at the campground, and getting ready for it keeps organizers plenty busy, setting up events, organizing parade lineups, manning a concession stand, overseeing the fire, cleaning up afterwards. About 1,000 attend the festivities on the Sunday before Labor Day, and the club has enhanced it in recent years, adding food trucks and music to the fun. ATVs and UTVs decked out for the day, golf carts and wagons, along with the occasional antique car or truck take part in the parade.

Cold treats are available on select weekends, either snow cones, courtesy of a snow cone maker on site, or or ice cream made by Fitzgerald himself with a hand-cranked ice cream maker.
“We build a big ‘ol bonfire that you’ll be able to see from the space station,” Fitzgerald joked. “People enjoy it.”

The Campground So cial Club keeps busy planning activities for campers of all ages. They keep things hopping for the kids, with a bounce house (far right); a soccer pitch (right) was added to the campground this year; guests can have their pancakes and eat them too, during one of the club’s bi-weekly pancake breakfasts (top); and an an nual bonfire always draws a crowd. “We wanted to do something to make things more fun out here for the kids, and also for the adults,” campground host and club leader Ellis Fitzgerald said.

Lake Carroll's Campground Social Club membership dues are $20 per family.

The club also sets aside a portion of its funds to donate to the Shannon-Lanark Food Pantry, as well as organizing a food drive in the fall. Last year’s drive in late October saw a couple of truckloads of food and sundries donated, as well as about $1,000 in dona tions. The need for a helping hand from the pantry has increased recently, and the club is asking for more help for this year’s drive, which will be 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in the Clubhouse parking lot.

“This year the need is greater than ever,” Fitzgerald said. “There’s more people that need food, and there’s less food to get. It’s a worthwhile project.”

Lake Carroll’s campground has become a destination within the community itself, with treats, breakfasts and a whole lot of fun, and as long as the club is around, things should just keep getting better.
Other campground events overseen by the club include the a Memorial Day kickoff event to begin the summer season, an annual Independence Day celebration on the Sunday before July 4, an annual golf outing, and a “trunk or treat” event close to Halloween for the kids.

“We’ve become a lot more social here,” Fitzgerald said, “and that’s one of the things we’re shooting for.”
“We get a lot of attendance for it,” Fitzgerald said. “There’s no charge for it, but we do appreciate a donation.”

“We create fun,” Fitzgerald said, “and we’re constantly looking at more ways to do that.”

Another popular event at the campground is the bi-weekly pancake breakfasts, where people wake up and line up to enjoy flapjacks and sau sage and a choice of coffee or orange juice. The dates are announced in advance and breakfast is served from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Club members man the skillets and make sure there’s plenty of food, fun and fellowship for all who attend. The breakfasts run from May to October, and can draw as many as 100 people, though the one on July 31, coinciding with the 3-day Lake Carroll Fest, doubled that number — the largest pancake breakfast yet, Fitzgerald said.

he story of the region that would one day become Northwest Illinois began millions of years ago, but it’s only in the past few centuries that museums have told the tales of towns and village and counties and com munities, and the settlers who formed them as they struck out to tame the land and build a Thesenation.nearby communities have histo ries that go back to the days when Chief Black Hawk’s Sauk Indian tribe ruled the land, when natives enjoyed a prairie untouched by the march of progress and where animals had roamed the land for millennia. That was up until the 1820s and 1830s, when the first White settlers moved in and displaced the natives, building towns along rivers that, along with stagecoaches and rail lines, helped towns prosper and grow. Communities rich in industry and rooted in agriculture developed hardworking lifestyles in their people, and a desire to tell their stories.

As more people spilled across the land and made their own history, preserving those stories became increasingly important. Research that took place 100 to 150 years ago documented what life was like for both man and beast up until mod ern times, providing a foundation on which today’s gatekeepers of history can stand as they continue to refine stories of the past and preserve stories of the present at muse ums in communities throughout the region.

So, why not take a look at our list and make a day of learning more about days past with a trip to an area museum? While there may be oth er, more specific museums in some of these towns — such as the Fulton Telephone Museum or the Reagan Boyhood Home in Dixon — the following list encompasses museums that cover the overall history of their communities.

This small Rock River town briefly was the county seat for Whiteside Countyin the 1840s, from the time it moved from Sterling to when it went to Morrison. The museum is housed in the former Lyndon Congregational Church, built in 1883 and used as a church until 1986, with the chapel and stained glass windows both intact. A few blocks south, along the Rock River, is the historic Lyndon Bridge, which car ried traffic over the river for 90 years, and now is open to pedestrians.

Named for Leonard and Maxine Martin, this 1855 Italianate home displays history from the Mississippi River town and preserves what life was like living in the home in the 1800s.

As part of a year-long celebration of Lake Carroll’s 50th anniversary, organizers pulled out all the stops and put together a 3-day celebration of the lakeside community, its history, and the people who call it home. Lake Carroll Fest was held July 29-31 and kicked off Friday with music, a movie, and more, and ran through Sunday, with pancakes, a petting zoo, parade and other activities. In between, there was music, an ice cream social, a golf scramble and more — including a lot of smil ing
It was an event that only comes along once every 50 years, and the folks at Lake Carroll made sure they enjoyed every minute of it.

Music lovers got a treat during the festivities with five different acts performing over the 3-day stretch at the Clubhouse. Bobbi White and Com pany from Sterling-Rock Falls played a wide range of popular songs and Blue Steel 815 of Rockford hammered out their country-rock blend of tunes on the 29th. The Sauk Valley-based band Slick Trigger doled out some high-energy country and Chicagoland’s own Infinity Band belted out a variety of 1970s and 1980s rock and roll “ultimate tribute” songs on the 30th. Chase Sieting of Peoria closed out the musical lineup with an acoustic rock performance on the 31st. Want to hear more from the bands? All five acts are on Facebook, and both Blue Steel (bluesteel815.com) and Infinity Band (infinity2k.com) have websites.

The Leroy Hinkle Dam got a workout Aug. 8 after a deluge drenched much of northwest Illinois, following heavy rains that morning and the prior weekend. According to the National Weather Service, Stephenson County, to Lake Carroll’s north, had between 5 and 10 inches of rain in a 48-hour span from Aug. 7-8, and between 5 and 7 inches were measured in northeast Carroll County. The dam did its job after the lake rose about a foot higher than normal for this time of summer.

People of all ages have come in to try a healthy drink, including, of course, the students whose school mascot inspired the business’ name. Like clockwork, when she opens at 7 a.m. on four of the five school days — she’s closed Wednesday — a fair number of Polo Mar cos are already there, waiting to get their fix of her nutritional mix on their way to school.
Lake Lifestyle | September 2022
Marco Nutrition’s Rene LeFevre likes to think of her role as more than just a business owner. She looks at it as a way to do her part to encour age healthier lifestyles, too. “I enjoy helping people when they come in and want to be healthier, or do better things with their health,” she said.

ou say Marco, you hear Polo.
In a time when maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be a challenge — with carbonation and corn syrup and mega-sized fountain drinks all around — Lefevre is doing her part at Marco Nutrition to help people find healthy alter natives to all the unhealthy ingredients out there, and she’s doing it with boosted teas, shakes and iced coffees.
“I’ve met a lot of people that I wouldn’t have known otherwise,” she said.

When Renee Lefevre says Marco, she hears Nutrition.Lefevre is the mixmaster behind the healthy drinks and hometown pride at her Polo business, Marco Nutrition.
“I enjoy helping people when they come in and want to be healthier, or do better things with their health,” she said, and in her first year of busi ness, she’s met a lot of like-minded people.
LeFevre mixes up a drink at Marco Nutrition. With so many choices on the menu to choose from, it’s hard to pick just one — but some customers do. LeFevre said about half her customers find a favorite and stick with it, while the rest like to explore what’s on the menu.

Seeing younger customers opt for something other than mass produced energy drinks or soda makes Lefevre happy.
ALEX T. PASCHAL/APASCHAL@SAUKVALLEY.COM

“I hope they’re cutting back on energy drinks,” Lefevre said. “Ours has vitamins and minerals in it, and it doesn’t have a lot of sugar. It’s healthyLefevrecaffeine.”mixesup lots of flavors to savor, with ingredients that come from the Herbalife brand of dietary supplements. What you won’t find, though, is a lot of calories, despite what the names of some flavors might lead you to Chocolatebelieve.andcheesecakes may not sound like part of a balanced diet, but the drinks at Marco Nutri tion won’t have you tipping the scales. They clock in at only 250 calories or less. There’s practically no limit to what can be created, and Lefevre invites you to stop by and take a look at the menu. It’s right by the front door so you can decide what you want before you step up to the counter — and it might take a few minutes to make up your mind.

increase energy and improve digestion. There’s even a caffeine-free boosted tea for the younger kids. Another type, a “hangover tea,” has 15 grams of protein, vita min C and energy-supporting B vitamins.“When they come in for some thing that’s really hy drating, they’ll get a hang over tea,” Lefevre said.
Lefevre’s regulars are about a 50-50 mix: some stick with their favorites, while others explore the menu to find new favorites.
“When I first opened, there were a couple of people who looked at the menu and decided they wanted to try every shake and every tea, but then they run across one that they really like and they’ll stick with it,” Lefevre said. “I’ve had people that order the same thing in the last year, maybe they only come in three times a week. Some of them get in their habit and have the one thing they like and never try anything else, and some of them try something different every time they come in.”
In all, Marco Nutrition’s menu includes almost 60 different types of shakes, each with no more than 250 calories and no more than 9 grams of sugar; 40 differ ent sugar-free, boosted teas with plenty of vitamins and only 25 calories; and 20 different types of iced coffee, each with only 100 calories, 15 grams of protein and just 2 grams of sugar. The teas and shakes can be ordered cold or hot — the hot shakes proved to be popular in the winter months.

There’s an art to mixing just the right drink, and LeFevre has quite a colorful palette to choose from. Marco Nutrition’s menu includes almost 60 different types of shakes, 40 different boosted teas, and 20 different types of iced coffee. Here, LeFevre mixes up a Marco Power tea, which features the high school colors of blue and yellow. Inset at left: The Fried Oreo Shake and the Marco Power tea.

Some come for the “flavors of the day,” to try a different tea, shake or iced coffee. Specials are posted on Marco Nutrition’s Facebook page before the store opens. In a hurry, and don’t want to wait in line? You can order ahead via Facebook Messenger. Sometimes Lefevre will take suggestions to help name newer creations. Some names come from a healthy helping of hometown pride. There’s a Marco Power tea, with orange, pomegranate and Herbalife’s “blue blast;” and a Marco Mayhem shake with cook ies and cream, vanilla cheesecake, white chocolate, blueberry and lemon. Both concoctions feature the high school colors of blue and yellow.

Lefevre used to work at Blackhawk Nutrition in Oregon before she decided to open her own place close to home. She took part in a DrumFIT exercise class in Oregon and found herself visit ing Blackhawk Nutrition for something healthy to quench her thirst. After a little while, she wound up working there, and in the process she learned firsthand about nutritional science.
Marco Nutrition is one of several similar business es throughout north central Illinois that use Herbalife products, and even have similar menus, but Lefevre’s operation is the closest one to Lake Carroll.

Lefevre’s proud to do her part to pro mote healthier lifestyles, and she hopes more people will hear her message and say: “I’ll drink to that!”
“I love what I do,” she said. “I re ally do.”
1984

“I got better, actually,” Lefevre said. “My blood sugar had been close to where they would have to watch it. I went there later and he said, ‘I don’t know what you’re doing, but your blood sugar is right back where it should be.’ I felt better, and I made my husband [Mark] start drinking them — he absolute ly wasn’t going to do it, but now he drinks a shake every night.”
B
“The younger kids will come in here and point their friends out to the ice ma chine, and tell them, ‘Wait until she opens that, there’s a light in there,’” Lefevre said.

PASCHAL/APASCHAL@SAUKVALLEY.COMT.ALEX

Even the ice in the drinks gets a little boost. It comes from a Vevor ice machine that bathes it in blue light. The light is supposed to prevent bacteria from grow ing inside, but Lefevre has seen another benefit of it: younger customers think the blue light looks pretty cool.

ike all business owners, Fred Paschke wants to generate customer traffic — but in order to do that, he has to give it a place to stop first. He’s in a good place to do it, at a busy four-way intersection where his Do It Best Mount Carroll Home Center sits. That’s where Paschke’s latest project can help: Fred’s Man Caves and Deb’s She Sheds — and before you ask how all those things could fit in a man cave or she shed, we’re not talking about those cozy and compact backyard retreats that have become increasingly popular in recent years. Paschke’s man caves and she sheds are more like a storage unit, and he’s building them in his own backyard.Theowner of the Do It Best Mount Carroll Home Center, at the intersec tion of U.S. Route 52/state Route 64 and state Route 78, also owns swaths of land south of the busy four-way stop, where he’s building his own take on man caves and she sheds. He’s already put up one unit, with more to come.

CODY CUTTER/CCUTTER@SAUKVALLEY.COM

As for the she sheds? Well, Paschke doesn’t want to miss out on being able to market to moms and misses — after all, they can use some extra space, too. The Deb in Deb’s She Shed is his wife of 54 Paschkeyears. is building the units along West Commercial Street, just around a corner from his hardware store. One unit is up already: it’s a two-bay building with one half already being rented out, and the other half awaiting a ten ant. It was built this past winter and completed in March.
“A man cave is a place where a guy can store his motor home, or his boat, or whatever,” Paschke said. “In the met ropolitan areas, these things are very popular. A guy either lives in a town house or has no room for his toys.”

If you need some space, he’s got the Havingplace.been part of this rural community for 40 years, Paschke knows it’s important for people to have a safe place to store their toys and transporta tion when they’re not on the move.
Paschke’s storage units come with a something a little extra: a restroom with a toilet and sink, electrical hook-ups, and heating. There’s also a hose and a utility sink.

“You can put a motor home here with an air conditioner on top, and it’ll fit,” Paschke said. Unlike traditional storage units, each has its own restroom, with a toilet and sink, elec trical hook-ups, and is heated. There’s also a hose and a utility sink, if renters need to wash something more than their hands. The finished concrete floor is slightly sloped for water
Paschke, originally from Minnesota, came to Mount Carroll 40 years ago and bought a former gas station and restaurant to turn into his hardware store and lumber yard. His op eration has grown since then and today it in cludes a 70-bay traditional storage facility east of town and a “bargain barn” across the road from the hardware store where customers can find discounted items. If you’re looking for storage sheds, he’s got those, too.

“It’s a niche that I try to fulfill,” Paschke said. “It’s people that have a lot of toys to put in there, or it can be a start for a person starting a new business. It doesn’t have to be a full-time business, it can be part-time. Woodworking,

Each unit measures 48 feet long, 24 feet wide and 16 feet high; the garage door is 16 feet wide by 14 feet high. The units are large enough for an RV or a small fleet of golf carts.

In the decades Paschke has been in town, he’s come to know many people from Lake Carroll, including one couple he knew from his days in Minnesota, and he thinks his new stor age units could offer something for the lakeside community’s residents. He knows the kind of units he’s building are too tall to build in Lake Carroll, and that was another reason why he wanted to go forward with his endeavor.
he hopes people will see the potential the units have to offer. Sure, they could just be a place to store stuff — or maybe they can be more of a man cave or she shed. A place where a group of buddies can hang out and work on a car, or group of hobbyists can whittle away at their projects. Or maybe a bud ding business needs a place to get a start.
“I thought with the tourism in this area, and with Lake Carroll, I thought this would be a perfect fit,” Paschke said. “We’ve been in Car roll County for 40 years, and it’s a wonderful place to raise a family. It’s a nice com munity.”
