Greetings from the Village of Homer Glen I invite you to explore all that our vibrant Village has to offer. The information in this Community Guide will help you fully enjoy Homer Glen, from its convenient shopping to our fantastic special events and recreational opportunities. From our helpful service businesses to our beautiful countryside and local farm markets, Homer Glen has something for everyone! 2021 is a special year for Homer Glen as it marks the Village’s 20th anniversary of incorporation. Our community came together to celebrate this milestone with a number of events including our Kite Fest & Anniversary Picnic in early May and a fly over show by the Lima Lima flight team during HomerFest. This year also marks an essential step for our growing Village. From the very start, Village leaders envisioned a plan for the community to ultimately become an autonomous municipality. In late spring, the Village successfully assumed responsibility of its own roads with the transfer of stewardship from the Homer Township Road District. As part of this process, the Village created its own public works department directly accountable to the residents of Homer Glen. Watch as the Village continues to rollout our new marketing brand timed with our anniversary year celebration. A new gateway sign at our western border on 159th Street and Gougar Road showcases the new brand reflecting our unique community character. Enjoy the return of annual special events and the many additions of new events, including Market in the Glen, taking place at Heritage Park. The new 103-acre park located behind Village Hall is proving to be the community’s gathering place we wanted. I encourage you to shop and dine locally! The local sales tax revenue generated by your purchases are reinvested directly into maintaining and improving your community’s infrastructure and services. HOMER GLEN OVERVIEW Incorporated on April 17, 2001, the Village of Homer Glen is strategically positioned in northeastern Will County, 25 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. The I-355 Veteran’s Memorial Tollway links I-55 south to I-80 on the western edge of the community. Homer Glen is an upscale suburban gem offering a unique blend of open space, beautiful residential developments and vibrant commercial corridors with significant commercial growth potential. Homer Glen is a community of 24,543 residents with an average household income of $126,626. Residents have a high educational attainment with 37.6% holding a Bachelor’s or higher degree. Homer Glen is one of Will County’s largest municipalities, currently encompassing approximately 22 square miles with the opportunity to ultimately grow to about 25 square miles. The Forest Preserve District of Will County has over 1,300 acres of land within the Village, providing a unique lifestyle amenity. Homer Glen is home to a variety of local businesses and nationally recognized brands. Economic development activity is occurring in the Village’s primary commercial corridors of 143rd Street, 159th Street and Bell Road. The State of Illinois and Will County are investing over $200 million in road improvements to widen all three primary commercial corridors to four lanes over the coming years. These roadway improvements, needed to accommodate projected traffic increases, will further enhance Homer Glen’s attractiveness for new development. IDOT’s widening and improvement project for 159th Street (IL Route 7) opened for four lanes of traffic in November 2019.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Attractive demographics, quality school districts, easy transportation access, existing retailers and traffic counts make Homer Glen an excellent choice for new businesses. Two access points with the Veteran’s Memorial Tollway I-355, Illinois State and Will County road improvements and prime land development opportunities will help drive interest in Homer Glen for future business expansion and growth.

The Village’s strategic initiatives for economic development create the foundation for balanced growth. The strategy envisions new quality residential and commercial development that will build on the community’s unique character and quality of life while expanding the tax base to deliver support services and amenities. The plan allows the Village to embrace growth along the high traffic corridors while elsewhere preserving the open space, natural resources and semi-rural character that make Homer Glen so desirable. The Village has streamlined and implemented business-friendly Code and process improvements to support residential and commercial growth opportunities. POLICE DEPARTMENT The Lemont Police Department consists of men and women committed to the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors. It is the mission of the Lemont Police Department to safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence of fear and crime and to enhance the public safety while partnering with our residents to improve their quality of life. The Lemont Police Department offers numerous programs to residents including: Prescription and OTC Drug Disposal, Vacation Watch, Neighborhood Watch program, Police Explorer Program (Cadets), Senior and Law Enforcement (SALT), Child Safety Seat Inspections and community events, such as Kops N Kidz/Emergency Vehicle Night. This event allows the residents to interact with the Police Department in a fun and positive way. Each of these programs affirms our commitment to the concept of community policing. Today, the district encompasses 40 square miles in Cook, DuPage, and Will Counties while providing service to the communities of Lemont, Woodridge, Darien, and Palos Park. We employ 54 sworn full time Firefighter/ Paramedics and 14 support staff. The district works from 4 Fire Stations and utilizes 4 Fire Engines, 1 Aerial Ladder, 4 ALS Ambulances, 1 Tender, 1 Hazardous Materials Truck, 1 Dive Vehicle, and 1 UTV. We respond to approximately 4100 emergency calls per year and provide services for Fire, EMS, Specialty Rescue, Fire Prevention and Inspection, Fire Investigation, and Public Education. hether you are searching for a good book to read, a new cookbook of recipes or perhaps the tools to try canning fruits and vegetables, the Lemont Public Library has the inventory to nourish your interests.
The past year hasn’t diminished the community’s interest in library materials and circulation numbers continue to grow, said Executive Director Heather Shlah. Rather, libraries continue to evolve from the lessons of the past few years and develop new ways to engage with the community. In response to the increased interest in using outdoor space, the library staff is enhancing its garden area to provide a place to relax, take in a story time and participate in a class like outdoor yoga. Additionally, the library boosted its Internet accessibility to ensure patrons can access the web outdoors just as well as if they were sitting inside the building, Shlah said. Library staff continues to provide the latest items in the collection of materials housed in the building as well as access to online
materials. Patrons can turn the pages of their favorite cooking magazine from the library building or on their tablet or smart phone.

Among the newest additions to the collection is the Library of Things, a collection of items people may borrow from the library including garden tools, baking supplies and kitchen gadgets. The aim is helping patrons save money by sharing equipment or perhaps trying a tool before deciding to purchase their own.
The library staff maintains outreach visits to local senior communities, from bringing books to fill their small libraries to programming such as read to the dog and helping seniors navigate technology to be use video calls to connect with distant family members.
The library will continue to offer inperson and virtual classes for education and entertainment of all ages, providing opportunities to learn a new craft, discuss books or discover faraway lands. “A lot of our patrons have adapted to virtual so we plan to continue to offer a Zoom component,” Shlah said. The library’s reach extends beyond the facility and thanks to a gift from the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club that includes a new set of wheels known as the Book Bike, which looks like an ice cream push cart. he Homer Township Public Library District is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2022. Executive Director Sheree Kozel La-Ha said it will be a year-long celebration with special activities each month. The anniversary events will be another great reason to visit and enjoy the library which, like its community, has continued to grow through the years from the numerous materials circulating from traditional books and movies to an entire collection of online materials that can be downloaded to a tablet or smart phone. “I think libraries have evolved and now we are much more than books,” Kozel La-Ha said. And she has witnessed how the building is more than a place to pick out materials. Increasingly through the years the library has become a central meeting area for the community that seeks space to gather for a meeting, class or to socialize. To better serve the growing need for
space to gather, plans are underway to expand the atrium area to provide more seating for those seeking a spot near the large windows and there will be a small addition to the youth services area. These projects are self-funded through the library’s current budget and will not require a tax increase, Kozel La-Ha said. “I think having a strong library improves the quality of life for all ages,” Kozel LaHa said. “I have lived in this community more than 40 years. I built my home here. I’m so proud of our library.” Long gone are the days of a quiet library, she added, as the library is bustling with activity from a busy event calendar that offers patrons a chance to take up a new hobby, discuss literature or take in stories and games. Prior to 2020, the library welcomed an average of 500 people per day and Kozel La-Ha said it’s wonderful to see the community returning to select materials, take classes, use the computers and find space to study and relax.

The highlight of Heritage Park is the Active Core, located in the center of the park along Heritage Circle. The seven acres of the Active Core provide recreation opportunities for all ages, including a nature-themed play area, a pavilion, bocce ball courts, tennis courts, pickleball courts, sand volleyball courts, outdoor fitness

The Heritage Park Disc Golf Course is open to the public. Disc Golf is a fast-growing sport that is friendly for all ages. The fun course takes players throughout the park, with 18 holes (baskets) of challenging obstacles, distances and angles. Settled in 1836 and incorporated in 1873, Lemont is one of the oldest and charming communities in northeastern Illinois. With rolling hills, three waterways, and its historic downtown, Lemont offers a setting and atmosphere unique to the Chicagoland region. The village is one of the key communities within the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor. Lemont’s colorful early history began in the late 1830’s with the construction of the I&M Canal, and with the influx of immigrant workers who settled and remained. By the mid-1800’s, limestone quarrying became the big business in Lemont and was the main cause of the town’s growth. Many fine local examples of buildings constructed with Lemont limestone still exist, including the Historic Chicago Water Tower landmark on Michigan Avenue. Local government and community volunteers have forged strong partnerships to rejuvenate both the I&M Canal and the old limestone quarries, with the goal of utilizing them for recreational and commercial use. Our proximity to 1-355, I-55 and I-80, makes Lemont a prime destination for business development. Metra’s Heritage Corridor commuter line provides a convenient transportation link to the City of Chicago. To further preserve its historic heritage and to stimulate economic growth, Lemont has prioritized the revitalization of its historic downtown area, which
offers charm, beauty and plenty of atmosphere. Downtown Lemont attracts the local community, tourists and the filming industry with its intact historic architecture, a great variety of specialty shops & restaurants, and adjoining recreational areas. The CITGO Lemont Refinery is proud to be a contributor to Will County’s progress. Our more than 800 local full-time and contract refinery employees produce high-quality fuels for a network of nearly 4,700 locally-owned CITGO stations across the country, and they also make a major positive impact on the community.
