Sheriff’s office advises Halloween safety SHAW MEDIA The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it will have deputies visible throughout the county from patrol, the bicycle unit, community policing and auxiliary for Halloween on Monday, Oct. 31.

As part of providing a safe environment, the sheriff’s office said in a statement they want the public to be educated about the communities they will be in for trick-or-treating.

The sheriff’s office currently has 38 sex offenders registered.

Clerk: Early voting consistent with 2012

County Clerk and Recorder Debbie Gillette told the County Board at its Oct. 18 meeting that there were 300 voters on the first day early voting was available at Oswego Village Hall.

“So that’s a lot,” she said.

Early voting began at the county’s Voter Registration Office at the County Office Building in Yorkville on Sept.

29, started Oct. 14 in Oswego at Village Hall and started Oct. 17 in Plano at Plano City Hall.

County Board Chairman John Shaw said he’s noticed quite a bit of traffic going in and out of the Voter Registration Office.

ures were as follows at the various locations: County Office Building, 1,550; Oswego Village Hall, 1,891, and Plano City Hall, 98.

Gillette said the numbers appear to be consistent with those seen in the last presidential election in 2012.

That year, there were 4,037 early votes cast at Oswego Village Hall and 3,434 cast at the County Office Building.

Record Newspaper staffers earn NINA awards SHAW MEDIA Record Newspaper staff members won awards in the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association’s 2016 Newspaper Contest.

Competing in the non-daily newspaper contest category, John Etheredge, Ledger/Record editor, won a first place award for Best Editorial for an editorial he wrote last April under the head-

line, “Judge correct to press Hastert on extent of crimes.”

The editorial was published after a federal judge sentenced former U.S. Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert to 15 months in prison for illegally structuring bank transactions in an attempt to cover up his sexual abuse of members of the Yorkville High School wrestling team when he was a teacher and coach at the school from 1965 to

1980.

The contest judges described Etheredge’s editorial as “A clearly written stand on the heinous criminal behavior by a once-leading public servant finally come to judgment.”

Officials updated on strategic plan

By ERIKA WURST news@kendallcountynow.com With the help of an updated strategic plan, and some serious brainstorming sessions, the Oswego Village Board is hoping to keep the village’s priorities moving forward, much like they’ve done over the last year and a half.

At an Oct. 18 Committee of the Whole meeting, Assistant Village Administrator Christina Burns detailed how far the village has come, and where it needs to go.

“The goal is to put into context the things we’ve accomplished, what we’re working on now, and the priorities of the new fiscal year,” Burns said.

In June 2015, the board met to outline a set of major initiatives it would like to see progress over the next few years. The compiled list included Wolf’s Crossing Road widening, a future marketing plan, a new police facility, a TIF district, and an administrator search.

Slowly yet surely, each item has been checked off that list as completed or underway.

The design for the new police station is coming to fruition. An environmental study is underway regarding Wolf’s Crossing, and marketing materials have been updated. A new economic development director and village administrator have been chosen, a TIF district has been passed for the downtown area, and new projects continue to move forward.

That said, there’s plenty of work to be done and places

to go from here, Burns said. So, it was time to gauge the board’s newest priorities and help put them into place.

New staff priorities include updated websites, pushing forward with the Metra study, talk of a new water treatment plant, downtown and village-wide economic development, conservation initiatives, ethics workshops for board members, and more. The new police facility and the Wolf’s Crossing construction projects were also highlighted as initiatives to keep moving forward.

The final project list will be incorporated into the strategic planning process and brought into the fiscal 2018 budget discussion so that resources can be allocated appropriately.

At the Oct. 18 Village Board meeting, the board also entered into an agreement with the Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University to create an updated strategic plan for Oswego. The cost is $11,750.

The village most recently adopted a strategic plan in 2012. The plan has served as a resource for the village in establishing priorities and budgeting. The plan was intended to run through 2017.

According to the village, $25,000 has been budgeted for strategic planning for fiscal year 2017. Board members voted to enter into an agreement with CGS to update that strategic plan, which will help the board and staff focus resources on the top priorities for the community, both in terms of funds and staff time.

CGS’s proposal includes three sessions with the board and the senior management team. The first two sessions will identify priorities and establish desired outcomes and performance targets. The third session will lay out action plans to achieve the priorities previously established.

The School District 308 Boundary Advisory Committee will host two public forums next week on plans to redraw enrollment attendance boundaries for the district’s schools.

The forums will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Bednarick Junior High School in Aurora and at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Traughber Junior High School in Oswego.

The 37 member committee is chaired by two school board members – Lauri Doyle and Dr. Michael McDowell – 10 administrators, and 25 community members.

Earlier this year the school district board voted on its top criteria for determining the new boundaries moving forward. The top four criteria were projected enrollment, building utilization, fiscal considerations related to operations, and duration of boundaries.

BRIEF Montgomery’s next Mayor on the Move gathering Nov. 5

Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley will host a “Mayor on the Move” gathering on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Lakewood Creek Clubhouse at 2799 Oakmont Drive in Montgomery.

Coffee and light refreshments for this event will be provided by the Lakewood Creek Homeowners Association. Residents are invited to drop by to meet the village president on an informal basis and discuss items of concern with him. Everyone is encouraged to bring their comments, questions and ideas to the session.

“As village president, I enjoy visiting with residents and hearing what issues are important to them,” Brolley explained.

“I also hope to tap into some of the great ideas people have on how to improve life in Montgomery.”

Supervisor salary cut, but not nearly enough Oswego Village President Gail Johnson earns an annual salary of $8,400 while Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley is paid $10,800 annually. Both positions are considered part-time jobs and do not come with health or dental insurance or other benefits.

Meanwhile, this year, Jim Detzler will earn $39,515 to serve as Oswego Township supervisor, also a part-time job. In addition to his generous salary, Detzler can receive taxpayer-funded health insurance offered through the township and participate in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.

We have never understood the disparity in salaries and benefits between the township supervisor and village president positions. Given the workload, size of their respective agency’s budgets, amount of public scrutiny and, at times, grief that village presidents must endure we’ve long believed that they should be paid more than the township supervisor.

Township government is often referred to as the “invisible government” because so few people understand its role or function. Whenever or wherever there is talk about downsizing and streamlining gov-

ernment in Illinois, the possibility of eliminating township government is usually and rightly at or near the top of the discussion agenda. Certainly the part-time leader of such a low-profile agency shouldn’t be compensated far in excess of a village president or mayor who serves as the public face of his or her community.

To their credit, the Oswego Township Board voted earlier this month to significantly reduce the salary for the person elected supervisor next year.

Effective after the April election, the annual salary will be cut from $39,515 to $22,000. But, unfortunately, they

also maintained the taxpayer-paid health insurance and IMRF benefits for the position. They also agreed to grant the next township supervisor annual raises of 3 percent over the course of his or her four-year term in office.

We believe township taxpayers would have been far better served if the board had voted to save them even more by approving an annual salary that is commensurate with the workload and responsibilities that come with the job and that is less than the current salaries for Oswego and Montgomery’s village presidents.

Where did Kendall County’s Native People go?

It’s Indian Summer, but where are all the Indians?

Years ago, the Chicago Tribune used to run John T. McCutcheon’s classic illustrated feature, “Injun Summer” every autumn.

A lot of us looked forward to each year’s rerun of the piece, which was first published in the Trib on Sept. 30, 1907. But then, some Native Americans explained they felt McCutcheon’s piece was racist, and to accommodate their feelings, the Trib quit running it, although you can still download a copy of it or even order framed copies from the Trib website.

Like the late film critic Roger Ebert, I have never really felt the piece was racist, but rather was a sort of folkway to explain what happened to all the Native Americans who once lived here in Northern Illinois.

Not to say that there aren’t plenty Native Americans still living around the region, of course. But what really did happen to the thousands of Native People who were living here when the first American pioneers arrived here in northern Illinois in the 1820s and 1830s?

In historic times, the Fox and Illinois River valleys were the home of the member tribes of the Illinois Confederacy. Calling themselves the Illiniwek (which meant “the men”) and called “Illinois” by the French, the related Kaskaskia, Cahokia, Michigamea, Peoria, Moingwena and Tamaroa primarily made their summer homes along the Illinois River, using Kendall County and other areas along the Illinois’ tributaries as hunting grounds and winter quarters.

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile By 1683, constant warfare waged by the Iroquois, who were attempting to control the trade in furs, led French adventurer, entrepreneur and explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle to fortify Starved Rock and gather several thousand Indians to the area – including the Fox Valley – for mutual protection.

After the region’s resources were exhausted some years later, La Salle’s principal lieutenant, Henri de Tonti, abandoned Starved Rock, relocating the entire fur trading and security operation south to first Lake Peoria and then to Kaskaskia and Cahokia along the Mississippi in southern Illinois.

That created a strategic vacuum in the Fox Valley.

The culturally related Fox, Mascouten and Kickapoo tribes unsuccessfully attempted to occupy the region following the French war of extermination waged against the Fox in the 1720s and 1730s, and the Fox Valley was again said to be part of the Illiniweks’ domain. However, in 1746, interrelated bands of the Potawatomi, Ottawa and Chippewa tribes calling themselves the Three Fires Confederacy moved into northern Illinois from their homes in Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Since the last Illiniwek bands had been eliminated from the Fox Valley years previously, the Three Fires claimed the area as their own.

During the French and Indian War of the early 1760s, the Three

Chief Waubonsie, principal war chief of the Prairie Potawatomi, as he looked during an 1835 visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with President Andrew Jackson. Although the Three Fires Confederacy, at the urging of Chiefs Waubonsie and Shabbona, helped U.S. forces during the Black Hawk War of 1832, they were nevertheless forced west of the Mississippi River in the late 1830s. Chief Waubonsie died in Iowa about 1848 and is buried on his former land along the Missouri River west of Tabor, Iowa.

Fires supported the French. After the British won the war, the Potawatomi remained loyal to their French friends.

By the time of the Revolutionary War, however, the Three Fires had transferred their loyalty to the British, and fought against the Americans.

Three Fires villages located up and down the Fox River also supported

the British during the War of 1812, with many of them taking part in the destruction of Fort Dearborn at Chicago in 1812. That year, according to U.S. Indian Agent Thomas Forsythe, the Three Fires could muster some 600 warriors. Forsythe reported that war parties from the Fox River villages of Chiefs Waubonsie and Main Poche participated in raids and battles against the Americans.

After the War of 1812 solidified the United States’ hold on the Illinois Country, the Three Fires tried to protect through diplomacy what they had failed to protect through military action. They were, however, unsuccessful, and were forced into several key land cessions during the next two decades.

President Thomas Jefferson had established a policy in 1803 for the removal of Indians west of the Mississippi River to open land for settlement, and in 1830 the policy became law with passage of the Indian Removal Act. In the aftermath of the brief Winnebago War of 1829 and the much more serious Black Hawk War of 1832, Illinois’ white residents demanded all Indians’ removal from the state. In spite of the Three Fires’ general support for the U.S. during both upheavals, the government officials readily agreed.

Most remaining Three Fires claims to northern Illinois land were relinquished in the Treaty of Chicago in 1833. Also that year, the first group of Illinois Potawatomi moved west to what was known as the Platte Purchase in the extreme northwestern

Last month, I had the opportunity to join a small delegation to the UK province of Northern Ireland. The trip was funded and organized by the nonprofit American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) out of Washington, D.C. The ACYPL has been sending such delegations all over the world since its inception in 1966, their purpose being to connect the next generation of leaders from various countries.

Our delegation of seven was a broad cross section of American politics. We had Democrats, Republicans and independents that covered state, local, judicial, union, energy and business sectors. We were plucked from throughout the United States from Austin, Louisville, Raleigh, New York and Washington, D.C., in addition to Montgomery. As you might expect, we had wide-ranging political views that we certainly explored in our spare time.

Northern Ireland today is a far cry from the hunger strikes and violence

VIEWS Matthew T. Brolley of the 1980s that grabbed the world headlines over the long-standing conflict between the Protestant Unionists and the Catholic Nationalists. Today they can boast 17 years of peace and a functional government. It seems to be a stable situation of fragile relationships.

The 17 years doesn’t come easy.

It requires constant communication between the two sides that each take full share of this responsibility.

Q: What can we learn from Northern Ireland?

A: I found the tale of Northern Ire-

land to be inspirational with important principles that can be applied to our country and our community. In this election year we need to remember that no matter what happens on Nov. 8, we can and must work together

for the common good. On Nov. 9, the government will open for business and the government will continue to function. But we must constantly bridge our ideological divides to inch this state and nation down a successful path based on mutual understanding and a win-win mindset.

In Northern Ireland their two sides work together because their existence as a nation depends on it. There is definitely something to be admired there that we can all learn from. Our ability to move forward as one nation despite our differences is based on our democratic process and the commitment to working together according to the will of the majority, while continuing to respect and protect the rights of all citizens.

Drawing my comparison (or contrast) between the politics of Northern Ireland and the U.S., no matter what happens after our election (federal, state and locally) the country will live on. It’s bigger and more important than any one person. More so, those

elected leaders will almost always be governing with colleagues from two (or more) different political parties. How well the two sides can collaborate when possible will determine their success.

I don’t claim this to be an easy task, or a task that can be successful in all situations. I’m sure that there are issues on which the two sides have irreconcilable differences and thus are virtually unsolvable. But I believe those true conflicts to be relatively few. There are likely many more issues where a good solution could be favorable to both sides.

In these times of extreme partisanship, perhaps our leaders can focus on these “winnable” tasks.

The continued conversation and resulting trust building could inspire and surprise us all, and lead to breakthroughs on even the most polarizing issues.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Take issues to the polls

To the Editor: I would like to remind those individuals that have continued to trespass, destroy private property and steal, that these are criminal acts, punishable by law.

Stealing political signs and damaging property in our subdivision, whether in broad daylight or at night, has never been an issue the 17 years we have lived in The Heritage of Oswego subdivision until this year.

Many of these criminal acts have been reported and we thank the Oswego police for extra patrol in our area.

People in vehicles and teenagers have been seen taking political signs off yards, even up close to houses during the daytime hours. Most recently our family has been targeted by individuals that drove by our house yelling, “’N’ Hater” and pointing at us. We felt helpless as we were not sure if they were pointing a gun. If they truly knew us, they would learn that we have a wide diversity of friendships and this “name calling” is very offensive and threatening to us and our friends.

Please note, we will not be retaliating by trespassing, destroying private property or stealing from others, however, we will still be supporting and voting

for Trump and others of our choice this election year to help in the effort to make America safe and great again.

Please take your issues to the polls and not to innocent people as this solves nothing and only causes divisions in communities.

To the Editor: Keep the balance of power in our federal government as intended by our Founders by having a Supreme Court that will rule based on the Constitution.

Donald Trump has provided a list of candidates that he will nominate if elected that will make decisions based strictly on the Constitution and not on any other law.

Continued from page 4 c­ orner of modern Missouri. In the fall of 1835, another large group of the Three Fires from near Chicago removed to Platte Purchase land. But that land, too, was coveted by white settlers, so the Potawatomi were forced to pack up and move to Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The rest of the Fox Valley’s Three Fires bands were sent west in October 1837. Traveling through near continual rain and mud, and suffering from lack of food due to poor government organization, they crossed the Mississippi at Quincy. The sick, hungry remnants arrived in the Platte Country in mid-November, when they were immediately forced farther west to the Council Bluffs reservation, a place hated by the tribe due to its lack of timber and the accelerating arrival of white settlers.

In 1838, the tribe split politically between full-blooded Indians and their mixed-blood American relations on the one hand, and full-blooded Indians and those of French (Metis) extraction on the other. The Metis faction was forced out and moved west to Kansas. Yet another treaty in 1847 forced the Council Bluffs Potawatomi west to Kansas as well, their land separated from the Metis Potawatomi by the Kansas River.

Some Three Fires families had refused to move and others, after one look at their Iowa lands, drifted back to Illinois, so the last of the Fox Valley’s Indian residents weren’t forced west until 1838. That finally brought the Native American presence in the area to a close after 120 centuries of continuous habitation along the banks of the Fox River.

Help dedicate Civil War gravemarkers Saturday OSWEGO LEDGER The Philip H. Sheridan Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) in conjunction with the Montgomery Historic Preservation Commission and Riverside Cemetery will dedicate 17 new headstones on the previously unmarked graves of Civil War veterans buried in historic Riverside Cemetery in Montgomery.

The ceremony will be held this Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. at the cemetery at 414 N. River St. Parking is available in the cemetery. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs for their comfort.

The dedication ceremony is the capstone of a project undertaken jointly by the SUVCW, the Montgomery Historic Preservation Commission and Riverside Cemetery. The project was designed to rigorously identify and document all Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery, procure and install new grave markers on those graves needing them and straighten and clean the markers on other Civil War veterans’ graves in the cemetery.

A total of 54 Civil War veterans are buried in Riverside Cemetery. Many of those soldiers served in units that were raised in part in Kane County, including the 7th, 13th, 36th, 42nd, 58th, 89th, 105th, 124th, 141st and 156th Illinois Infantries and the 13th Illinois Cavalry. In addition, men who served in regiments from Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and the United States Colored Troops are also buried in the cemetery. Many of them were active members of Aurora’s GAR Post #20.

Materially aiding in the successful completion of the project were Alan Morrow from Boy Scout Troop 41 in Sugar Grove and Cole Butler and Justin Huberty from Aurora’s Troop 11.

The Montgomery Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), the Greater Montgomery Chamber of Commerce (GMACC) and the village of Montgomery announced this week a grand opening ceremony has been scheduled for the United Sugars Corporation facility

on Aucutt Road from 4 to 7 p.m. next Wednesday, Nov. 2.

The 20-acre, $40 million facility with its distinctive white dome is the first of its kind in the nation. It was built and financed by the American Crystal Sugar Company and will be operated by the United Sugars Corporation.

Police said a man attempted to steal a tip jar that was located on the counter at the business. The man, however, was thwarted in his efforts to take the jar because it was anchored to the counter. Police said the business reported no loss in the incident.

The man was described as an African-American in his 20s, about 5-foot-10 and weighing about 190 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue baseball hat, red hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes.

WWII hero dog topic 11 for free library talk OSWEGO LEDGER A free program on one of World War II’s most unlikely heroes – Smoky the dog – will be presented by Adrian Brigham next Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Oswego Public Library District’s downtown Oswego Campus. Everyone is invited to attend.

During the program, Brigham will tell the story of Smoky, who was rescued from a foxhole in Papau New Guinea and went on to become the top mascot of U.S. forces in the South Pacific and a Medal of Honor winner for her bravery.

Smoky’s exploits included saving the lives of U.S. Servicemen and she helped inspire the creation of today’s therapy dog programs.

The Montgomery Rotary Club recently participated in the annual Montgomery Economic Development Corp golf outing. The club sponsored the longest drive hole for both men and women. Members collected donations in exchange for a goodie bag and shared information about Rotary with the golfers.

Club President Theresa Sperling presented a check to Dr. Neil Schlupp, chairman of the MEDC Board, at the agency’s recent board meeting.

“We appreciate the continued support of the MEDC and it’s a pleasure to present this check,” Sperling said.

The Montgomery Rotary Club meets on the first and third Thursday mornings of every month from 7 to 8 a.m. The group also meets for an evening social and networking hour on the fourth Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The morning and evening meetings are held at the Montgomery Village Hall.

Do you support a tax hike or hikes to balance Illinois’ budget? Explain.

KIFOWIT: I believe the State needs to re-evaluate its current revenue sources and compare our revenue structure in IL with our neighboring states. I do not think there is an easy answer to this question. One avenue I have been working on is the reimbursement rates IL receives from the Federal Government. We have some of the lowest reimbursement rates compared to our neighboring states, from Medicaid to disaster funds. In addition, I think internal processes should continue to be reviewed in order to capture new revenue.

A recent example of this is DCFS Director Greg Shelton who, by properly classifying cases, realized additional revenue of $21.5 million dollars in new reimbursements for FY16. There certainly needs to be a comprehensive discussion about all aspects of revenue and efficiency to bring about a responsible and balanced budget that properly meets the needs of the residents of the state of Illinois.

STRICK: I do not support any tax hikes. Illinois is one of the most taxed states. That is why so many people and companies are leaving.

We need to see meaningful cuts that will reduce our spending. Illinois has a spending problem. The budget proposed by Michael Madigan was $8 billion out of balance. How could Governor Rauner sign such a bill?

When Madigan and Quinn came up with the temporary income tax which cost each residents approximately $1,000 extra from their paychecks those funds went to other accounts. Once again a spending problem not a revenue problem. We are being taxed out of our homes and Kifowit has no solutions or answers.

How can the state cut spending to help reduce the deficit?

KIFOWIT: The state must continue to be diligent on

reducing redundancy and waste. Included in the initial budget proposal, was significant reductions in spending along with alternative avenues to save money. At this point in time, the deficit is projected to be too high to be able to rely on reductions in spending.

STRICK: The biggest area for cuts are unfunded mandates. An example is the same day registration and voting which was found unconstitutional. Will County, for example, spent $1.6 million to implement the program. It was unfunded but required by law. Will County went ahead with the program. $1.6 million was lost in this mandate. Illinois is saddled with many unfunded mandates which costs the state millions. We need to run the state like a business and we are the customers.

Do you support any part of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda? Explain.

KIFOWIT: I believe that we need to address the rates of workman’s compensation, because they are too high. I think this can be achieved through an open process. I am open to considering proposals for term limits.

However, I believe that any proposal for term limits must ensure that the people of Illinois are fairly represented and the elected officials are able to represent constituents to the fullest of their abilities. In the current roster of the General Assembly, only 17% of the Illinois House of Representatives has 12 years in office or more (13D and 8R by my calculation). As a newer member of the General Assembly, given the complex nature of legislative initiatives, I have found advice from more experienced members of the General Assembly, from both sides of the aisle, beneficial to passing legislation important to my district.

STRICK: I support Governor Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda. Illinois is losing so many good paying manufacturing jobs. Tort reform needs to happen. Workers compensation reform needs to happen. Worker compensation reform needs to happen. Burdensome regulations

KIFOWIT: Yes. All school districts in my district need a fair and equitable funding formula for schools, which does not result in the loss of revenue for our school districts, in addition to the payment of past due school construction grants, that have not been fully funded for about a decade. There needs to be a comprehensive analysis of school funding in Illinois, along with a comparison of what other states are doing with regards to school funding. Due to financial constraints, school funding has relied on property taxes as its primary funding source for schools. While property taxes are the most stable form of revenue for schools, it is also the most burdensome on the average homeowner.

This is why I have repeatedly voted to freeze property taxes. Senator Manar is working closely with members of the General Assembly, including myself, on finding the best possible formula for funding our schools and providing the proper resources without raising property taxes or taking monies from other school districts. Any proposal must hold harmless school districts who have been utilizing resources properly, in addition to assisting school districts with lower socio-economic demographics which need more services. I look forward to continuing to work with Senator Manar to pass a comprehensive school funding reform package that is beneficial to all school districts. The budget cannot be balanced without looking at sources of revenue.

Win for Wolves in regional

Oswego East’s two-game sweep over Glenbard North wasn’t picture perfect, but the Wolves got the job done to advance in the Class 4A West Aurora Regional.

The No. 13 Wolves (19-11) survived a Set 2 rally by No. 20 Panthers to win 2512, 25-23 on Monday. The victory sent Oswego East into Tuesday’s match against No. 4 St. Charles East on Tuesday where the Wolves’ season ended with a 25-18, 25-19 loss.

“Glenbard North, from what we scouted them, did exactly what we thought they would,” Oswego East coach Adam Thurlwell said Tuesday.

“In the first game we were able to use that, and in the second game we struggled to use it. For a little bit there it clicked, but we have to find another level for the next opponent.”

Oswego East took command of the match early, building a 4-1 lead behind a pair of kills from Meghan Delaney (nine kills) before three points from

Alison Jennings (five kills) pushed extended that lead, 11-6. Behind the strong serving of Makayla Chevalier, the Wolves went on an 8-0 run from Jennings’ last attack, and Sarah Schultz (four kills) put in a late point for a 23-10 lead. Glenbard North committed a serving error to clinch the set win.

Set 2 was a different story, with the game tied nine times before a pair of Glenbard North errors put Oswego East ahead, 19-17. During that stretch, the Wolves committed five serving errors, but Delaney continued to be effective on the outside adding three more kills to her night.

“I think we had nine missed serves and out of 30 points, so we’re giving them 30 percent of their points on missed serves,” Thurlwell said. “We weren’t even being that aggressive with our serving zones.”

Gabby Campbell finished with three kills, Jennings had two blocks and Schultz made nine digs. Hannah Bornemann finished with 13 assists and Katie Ayers made sever assists for the win.

The Panthers (16-19), seeded No. 17, held a 22-21 lead over No. 18 West Chicago in the opening game, but the Wildcats pushed ahead to lead 24-23.

Oswego trailed 26-27, but scored the final two points and eventually won the match 28-27, 25-21.

“West Chicago is a strong defensive team, led by Laura Katarzynski, with a lot of options at the net,” Oswego coach Matt Slechta said. “Tonight was a good

battle between the two teams and the game was more or less dictated by first contact skills. Both teams missed a lot of serves, but the defensive play on both sides was outstanding. It was a good lead in to the defense that we have to play against Geneva.”

Against West Chicago, Holly Behrends finished with 18 kills, 10 digs and two blocks while Lexi Miller made five kills and Cara Ferchen had 25 assists and seven digs. Desiree Walters had 12 digs.

With the win, Oswego moved into Tuesday’s regional semifinal game against No. 1 Geneva where the Panthers’ season ended with a 25-9, 25-6 loss to the Vikings.

OSWEGO LEDGER School District 308 has announced the launch of its mobile app. The free app is available on both Apple and Android mobile devices (including cell phones and tablets) by searching for “SD 308” in the app store.

The mobile app, developed by Blackboard/Parentlink – the district’s parent notification system – in coordination, pulls information from the district’s web site and other data systems into a more mobile-friendly, easyto-view application on cell phones and tablets. Students, staff, parents, and

community members can now download the app to gain instant access to school announcements and news, school calendar and athletic schedules, HomeAccess, and contact information.

Parents and students can access a calendar of district events, lunch menus, and contact information for schools. Parents can also check students’ grades or prepay for lunches.

“We’ve worked very hard on the SD308 app and are very excited about its development and launch,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Sparlin said. “The app gives us the opportunity and ability to communicate more effec-

tively, efficiently, and timely with the public.”

The app also allows users to tailor information, so they receive updates from specific schools they have chosen.

The app allows parents to receive “push notifications” from the District, meaning they’ll receive instant alerts on their mobile devices about important information regarding their child’s grades, attendance, and even lunch menu balances. Emergency notifications about school – such as a closure, a delay due to inclement weather, or a lockdown – are other examples of what can be shared through the app.

Refreshed Panther Credit Union reopens OSWEGO LEDGER Tim Taviani’s Banking and Finance class at Oswego High School (OHS) held a Grand Re-Opening for the refreshed Panther Credit Union (PCU), a student-run branch of Earthmover Credit Union. The students designed, planned, and marketed the event during the school’s three lunch periods Oct. 14.

“We want the students to feel like they are running a business,” said Libby Calderone, CEO and president of Earthmover Credit Union. “They had to figure out how they were going to market the event and stay within their $500 budget.”

During the event, OHS students were able to spin a prize wheel for Redbox movies, ring pops, hoodies, and 500 PCU backpacks, donated by Earthmover. The branch is also offering specials throughout the month, including a $10 credit for opening an account. Additionally, Banking and Finance students are holding a school-wide contest to rebrand the branch’s logo. Later this year, students and staff will choose the winner.

This past summer, Earthmover updated the look of its 20-year-old, in-school branch and invested in new technology. Instead of sitting behind a traditional teller line, student employees of PCU now use iPads and work from collaborative, counter-height tables.

PCU was the brainchild of School District 308 administration and Earthmover management who wanted to integrate financial literacy into the school in some way.

When PCU opened in 1996, it operated out of a converted boys’ lavatory. OHS and Earthmover gutted the space and rebuilt it into a small branch of the credit union.

Each year, 20 students are accepted into Taviani’s senior-only, year-long elective course. Students who apply typically want to pursue a career in business.

“It is a capstone course,” Taviani said. “I interview incoming students and give preference to those who have taken one of three courses: Marketing, Accounting, or Business Law.” In the first semester, students learn about the U.S. economy and the work skills they will need in their future careers. The second semester focuses on their rights and responsibilities as consumers, their role in the global economy, and financial budgeting.

Half of Taviani’s students work in PCU during first semester and the other half do so during second semester.

September’s PRIDE winners announced at board meeting OSWEGO LEDGER School District 308 announced the September 2016 winners of its PRIDE (Proudly Recognizing Individuals Demonstrating Excellence) Recognition Program at the Board of Education meeting held Oct. 11.

September teachers of the month are Michael Linden, eighth grade math teacher at Bednarcik Junior High School, and Michelle Brucher, pre-kindergarten teacher at Brokaw Early Learning Center.

Employees of the month are Rosa Cruz, school secretary at Oswego East High School, and Andrea Wiaduch, district administrative grant coordinator.

Stacy Kim, a volunteer at Tiger Depot and Thompson Junior High, and Heather Horne, the new fundraising chair for Oswego East High School, were named volunteers of the month.

The PRIDE program allows the Board of Education to formally recognize the efforts of teachers, employees, and volunteers who are engaged in exceptional work across School District 308.

Each month, the program recognizes two individuals from three separate categories: teachers, employees, and volunteers. A committee made up of various district groups and organizations selects the winners, and committee members serve six-month terms.

The Tigers dropped its regular season finale, 47-7 to Plainfield North, but Tulloch is expected to return against Oswego.

Joliet West sophomore quarterback Jaxon Aubry leads the Joliet area in passing yards, completing 59 percent of his passes through nine weeks.

“Our offense isn’t the dynamic type that is going to throw up 40, 50, 60 points a game, especially into the playoffs. We’re going to have to play a complete game offensively, defensively and special teams, time of possession, field position – things of that nature – and hopefully grind them down,” Cooney said.

Oswego completed an undefeated regular season for the first time since 1995 with a 43-6 win over Plainfield Central (0-9) last Friday. The Class 8A playoffs will include six other 9-0 programs: Loyola Academy, Homewood-Flossmoor, Hinsdale Central, Palatine, St. Charles East and West Aurora.

The winner of Friday’s first-round game will advance to play the winner of the first-round game between No. 12 Edwardsville (8-1) and No. 21 Oak Park-River Forest (7-2). Those two teams meet on Friday at 6 p.m. in Edwardsville.

With nine undefeated teams in Class 8A, Oswego’s 9-0 finish to the regular season was the only guarantee for a home bid in the first round of the postseason.

Oswego received the No. 5 seed in the bracket and will host Southwest Prairie Conference foe Joliet West (63) on Friday at 7 p.m. The teams met in the Week 3, and Oswego won 7-3 in Joliet. Now, Joliet West will make the trip to Ken Pickerill Stadium for the rematch.

“That bracket is stacked. We’re fortunate where we’re at, but that’s a lot of hard work by the kids and the coaching staff to put ourselves in this position – especially when there’s so many questions over our head of what kind of team we have and who are these kids on the field,” Oswego coach Brian Cooney said. “They quickly made their name known. They are one of four unbeaten Oswego teams, and that’s going back to about 1955.

They should be proud of themselves, but the journey isn’t over yet.”

Although the rematch between Oswego and Joliet West has the potential to be another low-scoring affair, don’t expect another single digit output from Oswego.

The Panthers scored just 15 points through the first three weeks of the season, but scored 127 in their final three games for an average of 27 points per game through nine weeks.

Oswego’s defense led the SPC, allowing just 71 points with two shutouts.

“In a span of six weeks, a lot can change,” Cooney said. “Neither team has really changed their true colors.

They still play good, fast, physical defense and try and spread you out.

It looks like they’re running the ball more effectively or taking some advantages of opportunities they’re seeing from other teams. Both teams are the same, but at the same time more fine tuned going into Week 10. It’s going to be a good one. I’m sure our guys will be ready to go.”

Oswego freshman football ends season with a win

The Oswego freshman A football team wrapped up the season with a 35-7 win over Plainfield Central on OCt. 20 to finish with a 4-5 overall record.

A strong defensive effort was seen throughout the entire game, with interceptions by Cade Mang and Domanick Pickler. The Wildcats’ offense was limited to just three first downs all game. Offensively, the Panthers were led by Gio Carig on the ground, and Aiden Avalos passing.

Matthew Cook had a touchdown reception and Troy Warner added a late score rushing as well.

The Panther coaches would like to thank the parents, trainers, athletic department, and everyone involved in the program for a great season.

Freshman B: Behind a strong running attack, the Panthers finished their season with a convincing 16-6 victory over Plainfield Central. Touchdowns were scored by Jake Chivari and Jason Cintron. On the defensive side of the ball, the Panthers were stout as a team. A safety was forced late in the match to cap things off. The Panthers will look to take this positive momentum into next year’s sophomore campaign.

By JEFF DEGRAW sports@kendallcountynow.com It went to overtime, but Oswego East came up short in the Class 3A Lockport Regional boys soccer final, as the Wolves lost 3-1 to Waubonsie Valley on a cold Friday afternoon.

Only 14 minutes had elapsed on the clock when Waubonsie’s Stephen Spano headed in a goal to make it 1-0.

It was a back and forth affair, with really no opportunities the remainder of the half until the Wolves had multiple scoring opportunities in the last four minutes, that included two consecutive corner kicks.

“They first half belonged to Waubonsie,” Oswego East coach Steve Szymanski said. “But I thought we really came out and owned the second half, we had opportunities to win it.”

Waubonsie sat back to start the second half, protecting the 1-0 lead, trying to stop the attack of the Wolves (14-72), but with 21:48 left in the game that changed.

Oswego East’s Dawson Johnson, a junior, unleashed a long shot from the

left side as it hit the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1.

“I don’t think Dawson thought he had a chance when he took that shot,” Szymanski said. “He looked at the bench with a big smile when it went in. He has not a big offensive threat for us, but that was big at the time.”

That goal seemed to spark the Oswego East attack, as they spent much of the time controlling the ball. The Wolves had three point- blank shots at the goal in a frantic 15 second combination, all within six feet in front of the goal with just six minutes remaining, but could find the one score they needed.

Then with three minutes left, goalie Nathan Nuerter made an incredible save for the Wolves, the last real threat that the Warriors had and to overtime the game went.

Oswego East’s Michael Waclaw had another opportunity to start the first 10 minute overtime, but just missed his shot. Then with 7:32 left in the second 10 minute overtime, Waubonsie’s Rogelio Grimaldo scored the game winner. Giacomo Parrino added

the third goal with just 53 seconds left to make it a 3-1 final.

“We fought and I’m not disappointed in the effort,” Szymanski said. “We fell short of our goal, but we have a lot to build upon for the future. Most of our offense is back next year. But our seniors have provided such great leadership this year. To be were we are now after the season we had last year is a tribute to those seniors. They were not going to let it happen again.

We tied for the most wins in school history and I’m proud of the seniors and this team.”

Oswego East 1, Lockport 0: On Oct. 19, Oswego East made the most of an opportunity that came its way in the 46th minute and that goal turned out to be the only one of the day as it claimed a 1-0 victory over Lockport in the regional semifinal.

Ford Frazer sent a pass to Manuel Magana, who got past a defender and then fired in a liner that helped the Wolves equal their school record for wins in a season while handing the Porters (11-5-3) their first home setback this year.

Local runners one race from Peoria

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com All four area cross country teams successfully navigated the course at Kress Creek Farm to advance out of the Class 3A Batavia Regional last Saturday.

The Oswego girls team placed fourth behind individual regional race champion Isabelle Christiansen, while Oswego East finished sixth to become the last team to qualify for the upcoming West Aurora Sectional, which will take place Saturday at Stuart Sports Complex.

The Oswego East boys team finished fourth while Oswego took sixth to also advance.

In the girls’ race, Christiansen found support from teammate Grace Pagone through most of the race before Christiansen pulled ahead to finish with a winning time of 17:36. Pagone took a runner-up finish in 17:51, edging out the third place finisher by two seconds at the chute.

“We had a plan in place for Grace and Isabelle to work together and they did that through two miles,” Oswego coach Eric Simon said. “Grace held

on nice and had a good kick at the end and held on for second, so it worked out well for both of them.”

Caitlin Guist (18:30), Megan Berg (18:51) and Ava Weyrich (19:10) rounded out the top five for Oswego for a total of 75 points.

Metea Valley won the regional with 53 points, Neuqua Valley (53) was second, Batavia (66) third, Waubonsie Valley (151) fifth and Oswego East (155) sixth.

“It’s a good regional in terms of the quality and depth of field; it’s really, really strong. We knew it was going ot be close, and 22 points from first to fourth isn’t a lot,” Simon said. “We feel really good about the meet and where we’re at. We feel like we ran better than conference and that we’re headed in the right direction.”

Oswego East’s Kendra Standish led the Wolves with a 23rd-place finish in 18:47, while Amanda Bonczkowski (19:00), Alexis Henz (19:03), Abby Flammersfeld (19:24) and Isabella Gyori (19:41) completed the top five.

In the boys race, Oswego East’s Dylan Zangri was the regional runner-up, clocking in at 14:51 to trail Neuqua Valley’s Matt Milostan by just

1 second. Luke Wentz (15:52), William Roeder (15:53) and Matt Blanco (15:57) packed together with Chris Smith (16:02) completing the top five.

Oswego was led by Bennett Peterson’s eighth-place finish in 15:17.

Mitch Bradford clocked in at 15:33, followed by Joe Fioresi (16:02), Erik Kivela (16:08) and Brendan Pope (16:16).

No. 1-ranked Neuqua Valley easily clinched the regional title with five runners in the top nine to score 24 points. Marmion (72), Waubonsie Valley (112), Oswego East (122), Batavia (130) and Oswego (145) represent the six sectional qualifiers.

Heading into sectionals, the top five teams will advance to state on Nov. 5 in Peoria, in addition to the top seven finishers not members of a state-bound team.

The Oswego girls were a 2015 state qualifier, and the Panthers hope to repeat a trip to Detweiller Park this weekend.

“We felt really good about the regional race and we’ve really been progressing through the back half of our races,” Simon said. “We’re hoping to put our best race together on Saturday and see where that puts us.”

Although the Oswego-Oswego East swimming and diving team got the edge on Plainfield co-op last weekend, it’s going to be another fight to the finish when the teams meet again for the Independent Conference championship in Riverside-Brookfield on Saturday.

Neuqua Valley won the Metea Valley Mustang Invite last Saturday with 480.5 points, but Oswego won five individual events and three relays to finish 3.5 points ahead of Plainfield, 401-397.5 in the 13-team field.

“Our top swimmers did their job and our second swimmers swam well, but the depth of the other teams was just too much for us to overcome,” Oswego coach Deryl Leubner said. “It’s nice to swim fast; that’s the most important thing.”

Oswego’s 200-yard medley relay team of Emily Giles, Alyssa Shugarman, Riley Evans and Grace Cooper raced to a top finish in 1:50.95.

The 200-yard free relay team of Cooper, Mari Kraus, Georgia White and Shugarman got the edge on Neuqua Valley with a winning time of 1:38.87, and the 400-yard free relay team capped the day with a first-place time of 3:36.97 behind the efforts of White, Cooper, Kraus and Giles.

Individually, White won the 200yard freestyle event in 1:56.97, and later won the 100 free in 53.85 seconds. Kraus won the 200 IM in 2:08.30 and also took a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (58.65 seconds). Cooper was the top finisher in the 50-yard free with a time of 24.39 seconds, and Shugarman was first in the 500 free, clocking in at 5:13.61.

Oswego has eight consecutive conference titles.

“It’s going to look a lot like the meet we just swam. We should win our share of events,” Leubner said. “We know where they are and what they have, and our kids know their kids, so we know exactly what we have to do and what they’re capable of doing. I think the meet is going to be manageable. Our top swimmers are capable of swimming away from their swimmers, and we’re deeper than the rest of our conference. It should all work out. Plus, we’ve got the advantage on the relays.”

CURIE CONDORS UP NEXT Wolves set school record with 8-1 finish to regular season

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com As the final week of the regular season approached, former Chicago Curie football coach Tyson LeBlanc saw the potential for a Class 8A first-round playoff game against the Condors.

LeBlanc, now in his fifth season at Oswego East, will see some familiar faces on the opposite sideline when the No. 16 Wolves (8-1) will host No. 17 Curie (8-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

LeBlanc took Curie to the IHSA state playoffs in all five seasons he coached there, from 2007-2011, and tied a state record with a 15-game season in 2010 after a long run in the CPS postseason bowl.

“With the 1-32 seed, we had an idea that we were looking at possibly three teams, and it was something that was always in the back of my mind to have the opportunity to play Curie,” LeBlanc said. “And there it is.”

Curie won its first CPS Illini Red Bird Conference championship since 2000 with a notable 28-21 win over Simeon – one of two playoff teams on the Condors’ schedule. Morgan Park, seeded No. 3 in Class 6A, defeated Curie 3634 earlier.

Curie is led by junior quarterback Ja’Ki McNeil, who threw two touchdown passes in the win over Simeon, but that was due to the loss of running back Anthony Watson, who missed the last three games with an ankle injury.

The Curie senior had 783 yards rushing through five games.

Curie has looked to freshman Steven Cheek and sophomore AJ Sanya out of the backfield in Watson’s absence. Curie averaged 45.7 points per game and allowed just 10.6 this season.

“Our running back is out, so we’re going to have hands full. We’re a young team and we’re up against a big test so hopefully we can meet that test,” Curie coach Jay McDonagh said. “Their conference is good and they have a strong program. The coach has done a nice job building it up and it’ll be a big challenge for us, and one that we’re excited to play.”

But LeBlanc isn’t convinced the Wolves won’t see Watson on the field.

“I’m expecting Anthony Watson to play,” LeBlanc said. “I think that’s one of the reasons they held him out, and I don’t know the extent of his injury,

but I expect him to be on the field on Saturday. They are very young, but for them to do the things they’ve done with a young team is a great credit to their coaching staff.

“With the connection I have, I’m

sure I’m more familiar with them then they are with us. I’m sure they don’t pay much attention to what we’re doing our here, but for me when I’m checking scores and stats, I like to keep up with what they’re doing. I had a good five

years there.”

Oswego East finished its best regular season in school history, improving to 8-1 with Friday’s 46-9 win over Plainfield East (2-7). The Wolves have two previous postseason appearances in Class 7A. Oswego East led the Southwest Prairie with 380 points scored (42.2 points per game) and finished second overall.

“When you put those type of points on the board, people automatically assume you’re an offense team, but I don’t know if that was ever the case with us,” LeBlanc said. “For us as a program, our offense has caught up with what our defense has been doing.”

The winner of Saturday’s firstround game will advance to play the winner of the first-round game between No. 1 Loyola Academy (9-0) and no. 32 O’Fallon (5-4).

Those two teams meet on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Wilmette.
