OSWEGO LEDGER The former senior vice president of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has been named as the Village of Oswego’s economic development director.

Village President Gail Johnson announced the appointment of Corinna Cole in a statement issued by the village Thursday Corinna Cole morning.

Cole will succeed Vijay Gadde who resigned from the position in April.

Cole will receive an annual salary of $100,000, according to information provided by village staff.

The village board ratified Johnson’s appointment during a meeting Tuesday evening Oct. 18. Her first day at work for the village was yesterday, Wednesday.

According to the statement, Cole has worked ten years with the NYCEDC. While with the NYCEDC, Cole was responsible for personally negotiating and overseeing in excess of 15 projects valued at $650 million, leading a team of project managers with a portfolio of more than 150 projects valued at $1.3 billion in public funding, and was responsible for preparation of budgets, reports and performance metrics.

Cole has a bachelor of arts in political science and English literature from the Knox College in Galesburg and a certificate in real estate finance and

board that by identifying a joint facility as the village’s preferred option they are not closing the door to other potential options for a sustainable water supply.

“If we start down that path and if the governance (of that facility) with the other communities is not acceptable or if other elements of the process don’t appear to be acceptable to the village, then you can pull back and go to the second alternative which will be your own plant,” he said.

Wallers, however, said he believes it is important that village officials consider a joint facility because of potentials savings to all three municipalities.

Wallers suggested that though the water level in the deep aquifer is falling, the village still has time on its

Montgomery Village Board members unanimously agreed Oct. 11 to finalize a Water Works System Master Plan that recommends the village develop and operate a regional water treatment plant with neighboring Oswego and Yorkville.

Village President Matt Brolley said the board will be asked to vote to adopt the master plan during an upcoming meeting.

Brolley noted the plan recommends a shared regional water treatment plant as the village’s preferred alternative to provide a sustainable source of water for its customers in the village and Boulder Hill.

Currently the village--like many municipalities in the Fox Valley area--pumps its water from a deep underground aquifer. However, water levels in the aquifer have fallen over the past several years, prompting village officials to examine other potential options for a sustainable water source.

The master plan recommends the village consider developing a regional water treatment plant with Oswego and Yorkville which would draw water from the Fox River.

Another potential option suggested in the master plan would be for the village to construct its own water plant that would draw water from the river.

Village President Matt Brolley said he met with the mayors, administrators and public works directors for Yorkville and Oswego this past summer to discuss the possibility of a shared water treatment plant.

Brolley said he is very supportive of working with Yorkville and Oswego on a joint plant and added, “What

He said he would be surprised if work would need to start on the new plant within the next five years. Instead, he said, he expects village officials and representatives from the other municipalities can spend the next several years discussing governance and land acquisition for the facility.

Wallers added that his firm is recommending the village and Oswego and Yorkville continue to monitor their water use. He suggested when water quality and pumping issues arise, the municipalities could then move ahead with the development of the new facility.

“We have the science that tells us that the deep well aquifers are going down and we’ve observed it ourselves with our water levels which we track on a monthly basis. We know that these things are happening,” Wallers said, “So we are not asking today to start work on the plant. We are not asking to start next year. We are asking to start the journey. Let’s decide what is in the best interest of the village, what is the best alternative.

Then we can complete the report and start working together and moving forward to make sure that when the time is right we are in a position to provide a sustainable water supply.

That is what is really important to our residents.”

Board member Denny Lee said village officials are all in agreement “we are going to be short of water sooner or later.”

Lee and board member Steve Jungermann questioned the potential costs to the village for constructing a new treatment plant.

Bravo on new county courthouse mural Bravo! That’s our one word reaction to the large mural that now hangs in the foyer at the entrance to the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville. But we want to share more words of praise here for both the artist, Eulojio “Joe” Ortega of Sandwich, and the Kendall Arts Guild (KAG) who secured donations to pay for the painting and oversaw the project.

Ortega has painted a stirring, uniquely Kendall County scene that features a farmer with a team of horses harvesting a crop in a field overlooking the Fox River. Spanning the river is a steel box truss bridge, the kind that once spanned the river in Oswego and Yorkville more than a century ago. A cupola, much like the one on the coun-

ty’s historic courthouse building in Yorkville, appears across the river on the horizon.

Like any good work of art we believe Ortega’s painting will mean different things to different people. Many will look upon the painting and ponder the county’s history and growth, while others will enjoy the scene and rich colors.

Even if you don’t have any business

at the courthouse, we encourage you to stop by and view Ortega’s work.

And, if you see Chief Judge Timothy McCann or any members of the KAG thank them for having the imagination and vision to use public art to bring some badly needed historic character to the courthouse. The painting serves to convert a largely overlooked space into a focal point for current and many future generations to enjoy.

Correspondent’s 1891 ballot prediction proved wrong Much, I suspect, to the relief of just about everyone in the U.S., not to mention the rest of the entire world, we’ll be heading to the polls in another couple weeks to elect a President, not to mention a host of state and local officials as well.

It’s probably understating the situation to say this has been one of the most unusual Presidential campaigns in the nation’s history as one of the nation’s two major political parties has found itself with a candidate that public opinion polls say most of the country intensely dislikes – and that includes a surprisingly large portion of his own party.

When we get to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8, we’ll find the usual setup of voting booths arranged so we can cast our ballots in private.

We take secret ballots for granted, but that’s not what our great-great-grandparents found when they went to the polls. Not until 1891 were Kendall County residents allowed to cast secret ballots, marking the end of a voting process beginning thousands of years ago.

Although we like to think that democratic tools like voting are relatively modern processes, voting using ballots has a long and honorable history in both the East and the West.

The ancient Greeks pioneered the use of ballots as early as the 5th century B.C., using methods ranging from kernels of grain to colored balls. Farther east, balloting was used in India before 300 B.C. Later, balloting was used during the Roman Republic, but gradually disappeared as government became more and more autocratic, and voting virtually disappeared for

Not until the 13th century was balloting revived by some Italian city states. By the 16th and 17th centuries, balloting had crossed the English Channel to Great Britain.

The first use of voting by ballot in the New World was used by the General Court of Massachusetts, which used the process to select governors after 1634.

Gradually, balloting became widespread. Its existence was assumed by the U.S. Constitution as well as state constitutions after the nation won its freedom in the Revolutionary War. But voting during that era was a lot different from what it means to us today. At that time, ballots were often passed out throughout the community – no polls necessary – and at other times the ballots were pre-marked. When a vote was cast, it was done in the open, often orally – reading and writing skills were sometimes absent – and there were usually separate ballot boxes for each political party. It was as if every election was a partisan caucus.

In the 1870s and 1880s, a parade of financial crises called panics – we’d term them depressions these days – continued to plague the nation.

A general public that was becoming more educated, thanks to the nation’s public schools, and more disenchanted with being told what to do by politicians who were little more than lapdogs of big business, clamored for change.

After some study, it was decided the Australian Ballot system, in which ballots are marked and then cast in secret, was by far the most fair.

Under the new system, ballots were to be printed at public expense and would be distributed only at official polling places. When ballots were marked, voters would place them in locked ballot boxes to secure them until they were counted. After approval by the Illinois General Assembly, the first election by secret ballot was held in Kendall County in the local elections of November 1891.

Not that everyone was looking forward to the new system, of course.

In October of 1891, the Kendall County Record’s Oswego correspondent, Lorenzo Rank, observed: “In a few weeks we shall be called upon to vote by a new system imported from Australia.

No tariff will be was paid on it, perhaps having been admitted under reciprocity.”

During succeeding weeks, the Record included a number of articles explaining how the new voting system would work. In addition, public meetings were held in communities throughout the county to explain the new procedures.

In the Record’s Nov. 4, 1891 edition, Rank wrote: “Today we do as the Australians do. As everyone will want to try the new style of voting, a good turnout may be expected.”

And remember: “everyone” in that era meant strictly men.

In Oswego, a Mr. John Pitt had the honor of casting the first secret ballot under the new system, although not without a few prob-

lems that entertained bystanders.

Rank wrote: “He [Pitt] is a very enthusiastic, quick, and nimble man. When starting for the booths, someone said, ‘Do you know how to fix the ticket, John?’ ‘Yis,’ said he; on entering, instead of lifting up the curtain or drawing it to one side, he dove right down under it, coming up on the inside under the shelf, with which his head came in collision, making the sheet-iron concern tremble and jingle from bow to stern, but no damage resulted to either it or John’s head.”

Presumably, Pitt’s exploit was the highlight of the day, although it was also apparently instructive because no more booth diving was reported.

Not everyone was happy with the new system, of course.

“There was but one man that balked when told that he must go into a booth to prepare his ballot and who declared that if it has become to such a point when an American citizen cannot mark his ticket wherever he pleased, he proposed not to vote at all,” Rank reported. “Upon second thought, however, he concluded to go through the important forms.”

The new voting system proved both successful and popular, although there were still some initial doubts. “While the system was met with general favor, it will be apt to be too cumbersome when it comes to a general election with a full slate,” Rank predicted.

In the end, of course, the Australian Ballot was adopted nationwide, and its direct descendant is still in use today in Kendall County, although sadly not enlivened by the entertainment value provided by Mr. Pitt.

and I have never seen what I would call a real and consistent traffic problem.

The super slab of Route 34 runs right through the same general area as Wolf Crossing and I don’t see an overload of traffic there that needs a relief valve. If you want a needed road project, spend the money widening Route 30 and smoothing the bumps on Route 34. If you really want to improve Wolf Crossing, put in some speed bumps to slow down the people that read the 35 mph signs as 70 mph, install some lighting along the road, and upgrade and adjust the traffic lights at the Route 34/Route 71 intersection.

Wolf Crossing will become a shortcut through a residential area for heavy trucks from Route 30 instead of keeping them over on commercial Route 34. I’m sure everyone that lives along Wolf Crossing would be thrilled to have big diesel engines, Jake brakes, and 80,000 pound trucks going by day and night.

To the Editor: Really? They want to turn Wolf Crossing Road into a five lane horror?

The first thought that hit me when I read this was that, judging by the time it has taken to do that stretch of Route 71 that goes past the high school, the work on Wolf Crossing should take about 10 to 20 years.

I live on Wolf Crossing. I see the traffic situation almost every day, and I don’t see any frantic need for a super slab. Any traffic back-ups at the Route 34/Route 71 intersection on Wolf Crossing don’t seem to last more than a few minutes. I drive along Wolf Crossing at varying times of the day,

Extreme shortcomings

To the Editor: Mayor Johnson seems to be unhappy with the comments made by citizens in the survey regarding the town of Oswego.

First of all, anyone who is delighted

with the status quo thinks that things are just fine. Those folks will not respond to any survey. They’re happy and do not see any room for improvement. Those of us dissatisfied are going to speak up.

Here I go: One, Jackson Street, just south of Hudson Crossing Park, is a disgrace. Mayor Johnson, take that crumbling Depression era street and pave it. Give it curbs and asphalt and make it a real street. That little one block road is obscene.

Two: Two large empty spaces south of Hudson Crossing. What in the heck is going to be done with these two spaces? Those lots hold one of the keys to downtown development. Oswego is not Naperville but you do not see this sort of vast open space in that city. Work on eliminating those two huge spaces. An entertainment zone could be developed. Restaurants, wine cafes, a Starbucks anything would be better than two gravel spaces that wouldn’t attract flies.

What Oswego needs is a director of economic development. Someone with power to showcase the potential.

Someone who has vision, contacts and decision making influence.

We have lived here for over three years. Oswego is awkwardly situated between I-80 and I-88. No logical light or heavy industrial outfit will locate here, it is simply inconvenient. Forget that option.

The railroad spur that passes through town is also a liability. It cannot go anywhere. We’re stuck with it. Ideally it would go away. If you can’t get rid if it, sit down with those folks and see how vital that spur really is. I’m sure it’s important to someone but who and how much. Oswego is stuck. Until those in charge recognize our extreme shortcomings, all will remain the same.

To the Editor: This past week, our Oswego village government held another public forum on the current status of our community and the many future plans that they are working on our behalf. The meeting presented a wide variety of issues that included new economic growth ideas, concerns surrounding our future water supply, overall transparency and the new police station that is very much needed for our police officers that is long overdue. There were many other topics presented and there was time for open questions as well.

I believe this current village board and president are the best we have had in our community since I have lived here since 1976. As a local business owner and lifelong resident since I was five years old, I believe they are doing a great job even under the difficult circumstances our state faces today. I often hear the phrase “we need to run government like a business” so people say. The village has done a great job in finding new people with forward thinking ideas, they have many business plans that will better insure responsible future growth while keep the finances in order as well.

These are the actions of a successful organization no matter what kind they are. I found it refreshing that many of the village staff was on hand for the meeting as was our chief of police who was very approachable and willing to talk and answer questions first hand as I did for the first time. I think he is doing a great job for our community.

I realize there are those who feel we should not be doing some of the forward thinking progressive plans the village is trying hard to do. I respect your opinions and beliefs, yet it is hard to understand when so few people show up to these well published meetings that are after working hours to hear the facts first hand and ask ques-

Township board sets salaries for officials elected in ’17 OSWEGO LEDGER The candidates elected Oswego Township Supervisor and Road Commissioner next April will receive significantly less in pay than the officials currently holding the positions as a result of action taken recently by the township board.

According to information provided

by George Hettrich, township clerk, the board set the following salaries during a reconvened board meeting Oct. 13: Supervisor: $22,000 with Health Insurance and Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) benefit; Township Highway Commissioner: $55,000 with Health Insurance and IMRF; Township Clerk: $8,000 with Health Insurance; and four Township Trustees each: $4,261 with no benefits.

The Township Assessor’s term starts on Jan. 1, 2018 with first year salary of $98,789 with Health Insurance and IMRF. Each salary will increase three percent each year during the officials’ four year terms.

The salaries must be set at least 180 days before the new term begins under state law.

Currently, Township Supervisor Jim Detzler receives an annual sala-

ry of $39,515 and Road Commissioner Gary Grosskopf’s salary totals $98,789.

Detzler has served as township supervisor for the past 20 years, while Grosskopf has served as highway commissioner for 28 years, Hettrich noted.

Grosskopf announced last year that he would not seek another term as Road Commissioner.

According to information provided

by Hettrich, there are essentially three different types of candidates that can be on next April’s ballot for township office, including: (1) independent candidates; (2) new party candidates; and (3) established party candidates. Independent and new party candidates get on the ballot by collecting signatures and submitting nominating papers during the period from Dec. 12 to Dec. 19. Established party candidates (e.g., those running as Republican or Democrat) get on the ballot either by collecting signatures or by getting nominated at a caucus, to determine whether or not established party candidates are nominated by primary or caucus within Oswego Township you should speak with your political party officials.

mum allowed number of signatures for Oswego Township Independent Candidates is 232.

To qualify as a candidate, applicants must be registered voters of Oswego Township and have resided within the township for at least one year.

All candidates for township assessor must file a certificate of qualifications with or prior to their filing of nomination papers pursuant to the provisions of Section 2-45 of the Property Tax Code (35 ILCS 200/2-45).

The Township Code and Election Code are designed to give candidates only one chance to run for office. Accordingly, candidates who participate in a caucus (i.e., sign a affidavit and attend the caucus) and lose a nomination, cannot run as independent candidates, new party candidates, or write in candidates. Similar restrictions apply for those who run in an established party primary.

Hettrich said the petition circulation for Independent Township Candidates began on Sept. 20. The filling period for the Independent petitions is Dec. 12 though Dec. 16 from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Dec. 19 from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Oswego Township Office, 84 Templeton Drive, Oswego. A public

pre-filing notice stating these dates and hours for filing petitions will be issued as a press release and a legal notice to this newspaper in late November.

Kendall County PADS has served 346 individuals over its first six seasons – men, women and children. The shelters have provided 6,957 overnight stays and the food team has served 20,972 meals, according to Engelhardt.

Engelhardt said the organization also helps connect its guests with social service agencies and other organizations that can help them.

“We link really well with our other local agencies – the Food Pantry, the Health Department, the Sheriff’s Office and all the local law enforcement agencies,” she said. “There is always a representative on our board from all three of those, and we work real closely with them. We’re just laypeople, we can’t solve their problems, but we can connect them or direct them to the social service agencies that are available that can help them.”

Registration is now underway for the Oswegoland Park District’s annual Gobbler Hobbler 10K Run and Mashed Potato Mile set for Sunday, Nov. 13, at 8:30 a.m. from Fox Chase Elementary School on Oswego’s west side.

A community tradition since the 1980s, the Gobbler Hobbler course takes in a portion of the Fox River Trail, Boulder Hill and downtown Oswego. At the finish line, participants can enjoy walking pancakes.

Organizers of the Kendall County PADS homeless shelter program say they are in great need for volunteers for the upcoming season, which began Oct. 16.

The PADS program, which stands for Public Action to Deliver Shelter, generally runs fall through spring, with the last night of this season being April 14. It uses local churches in the area that provide shelter for the homeless on a different night each week.

Anne Engelhardt of Yorkville, who serves as the organization’s executive director, said PADS typically needs 600 volunteers each season to run the program, and they are 100 short of that goal.

“We’re a little concerned,” she said.

People retire or have done it for a few years and take a break, she said.

“There are things that happen in people’s lives, which is why we need to have some fresh volunteers,” she said.

Volunteers serve in three shifts in a typical evening – first shift from 6:30

p.m. to 11 p.m., second shift from 10:45 p.m. to 3 a.m., and the third shift from 2:45 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Each shift has a set of duties – for example, first shift sets out mattresses and registers guests as they arrive, second shift prepares boxed lunches for the next day and oversees the guests, third shift cleans up the PADS site and checks out guests.

The program ideally needs four people per shift, two men and two women, for each night, Engelhardt said.

“If we don’t have at least two volunteers in the middle of the night, we can’t open,” she said. “If absolutely necessary, we can go down to two, but we would prefer not to, because we’ve increased our capacity to 20 [guests]. So we want to keep a good ratio between volunteers and guests.”

Engelhardt acknowledged that the second and third shifts are the hardest to fill, but said it’s only a once-a-month shift six times a year.

“It’s hard when people are working, but we remind people that it is just once a month for six times,” she said. “And if

An Oswego resident, Deanatta M. Weaver, 57, of the 300 block of Mustang Drive, was injured in a two vehicle crash on Douglas Road at Wolf’s Crossing Road Oct. 14 at 7:05 p.m. Police said Weaver was transported to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora.

Police said Weaver was a passenger in a vehicle that was struck while stopped in traffic by an oncoming vehicle driven by Tari K. Ello, 53, of the 20th block of Old Post Road, Oswego. Police said Ello was not injured, but charged with driving under the influence and improper lane usage.

Credit card fraud

An Oswego resident filed a credit card fraud report with police Oct. 14. Police said the victim reported an unauthorized purchase of on the card totaling $641.57. The purchase was made in Chicago, police said.

Retail theft arrest

Oswego Police arrested Lauren A. Thomas, 23, of the 1200 block of Second Avenue, Aurora, on charges of retail theft and obstructing identification at a store in the 2300 block of Route 34 in the village Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. Police said the suspect attempted to leave the store without paying for merchandise valued at $138.51.

Oswego police arrested a juvenile on a charge of illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor Oct. 7 at 7:15 p.m. at Oswego East High School.

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The Illinois Constitution establishes a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment.

Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO ADD SECTION 11 TO ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 11. TRANSPORTATION FUNDS (a) No moneys, including bond proceeds, derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to registration, title, or operation or use of vehicles, or related to the use of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or to fuels used for propelling vehicles, or derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to any other transportation infrastructure or transportation operation, shall be expended for purposes other than as provided in subsections (b) and (c). (b) Transportation funds may be expended for the following: the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, including statutory refunds and adjustments provided in those laws; payment of highway obligations; costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation; and other statutory highway purposes. Transportation funds may also be expended for the State or local share of highway funds to match federal aid highway funds, and expenses of grade separation of highways and railroad crossings, including protection of at-grade highways and railroad crossings, and, with respect to local governments, other transportation purposes as authorized by law. (c) The costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation shall be limited to direct program expenses related to the following: the enforcement of traffic, railroad, and motor carrier laws; the safety of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, or airports; and the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, operation, and administration of highways, under any related provisions of law or any purpose related or incident to, including grade separation of highways and railroad crossings. The limitations to the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation under this subsection (c) shall also include direct program expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of employees of the State’s transportation agency; the acquisition of land and the erection of buildings for highway purposes, including the acquisition of highway rights-of-way or for investigations to determine the reasonable anticipated future highway needs; and the making of surveys, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways. The expenses related to the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways under this subsection (c) are for the purpose of providing access to military and naval reservations, defense-industries, defense-industry sites, and sources of raw materials, including the replacement of existing highways and highway connections shut off from general use at military and naval reservations, defense-industries, and defense-industry sites, or the purchase of rights-of-way. (d) None of the revenues described in subsection (a) of this Section shall, by transfer, offset, or otherwise, be diverted to any purpose other than those described in subsections (b) and (c) of this Section. (e) If the General Assembly appropriates funds for a mode of transportation not described in this Section, the General Assembly must provide for a dedicated source of funding. (f) Federal funds may be spent for any purposes authorized by federal law.

EXPLANATION The proposed amendment adds a new Section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that provides revenue generated from transportation related taxes and fees (referred to as “transportation funds”) shall be used exclusively for transportation related purposes. Transportation related taxes and fees include motor fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and other taxes and user fees dedicated to public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit (buses and rail), ports, or airports.

Under the proposed amendment, transportation funds may be used by the State or local governments only for the following purposes: (1) costs related to administering transportation and vehicle laws, including public safety purposes and the payment of obligations such as bonds; (2) the State or local share necessary to secure federal funds or for local government transportation purposes as authorized by law; (3) the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, and operation of highways, mass transit, and railroad crossings; (4) expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of transportation agency employees; and (5) to purchase land for building highways or buildings for to be used for highway purposes.

This new Section is a limitation on the power of the General Assembly or a unit of local government to use, divert, or transfer transportation funds for a purpose other than transportation. It does not, and is not intended to, impact or change the way in which the State and local governments use sales taxes, including the sales and excise tax on motor fuel, or alter home rule powers granted under this Constitution. It does not seek to change the way in which the State funds programs administered by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation, and operations by the Illinois State Police directly dedicated to the safety of roads, or entities or programs funded by units of local government. Further, the Section does not impact the expenditure of federal funds, which may be spent for any purpose authorized by federal law.

Oswego sophomore Omar Carreno took advantage of a failed clear that caromed off a defender’s body and down to his feet with about 26 minutes remaining to pull the Panthers to within 4-2, but they wouldn’t get any closer.

“As a sophomore that was his 10th goal of the year, so that’s something we’re looking forward to seeing,” Falli said. “His motor doesn’t quit and that was another one of those good hustle plays.”

While Falli can look ahead to seeing more from Carreno, he had to say goodbye to his seniors including long-time standouts Ryan Baumann, Mitch Kearby and Nick Kearns, who finished with four saves in goal.

“We’re losing some four-year players and some other guys that have been here a long time,” Falli said. “They’ve been through a lot here and seen the program. We’re not where we want to be, but we’re getting better and understand that we’re mistakes are part of the game and we just have to get better.”

Fighting for your soccer life can’t be easy, especially when you’re a senior.

Knowing the potential end to the season was looking it right in the eyes, Oswego and its 10 seniors took the field at Batavia to face the Bulldogs in a Class 3A Oswego Regional quarterfinal on Saturday morning.

The fact that darkened skies required the field to be illuminated by lights only added to the survival element of the game, but before the Panthers could even get settled in they were down by two goals. Oswego would never overcome that deficit as the Panthers saw their season come to a close with a 4-2 loss.

Oswego finished the season with a 4-14-1 record – although half of their wins came in the last two weeks of the season.

“They picked us apart at the start,” Oswego coach Brian Falli said. “We’ve been good all season defensively, but they exposed us early and we got caught early in that 10-minute span.”

Batavia (4-11-2) has had its own share of problems to deal with this fall,

ahead just five minutes into the action, and less than a minute later, Brandon Knapp connected to make it 2-0.

Suddenly, a Batavia team, which had struggled in putting it into the net all season, had a lead, as well as a bit of insurance.

“It was nice to see (our guys) finally composed in front of the net,” Bulldogs coach Mark Gianfrancesco said. “All year this is what we’ve been looking for and if we had done some of that earlier maybe it would’ve been a different season from what we got, but that was good to see out of the gate.”

Oswego could’ve given up early after such a rough start, but didn’t. The Panthers cut their deficit in half at the 18-minute mark when senior Adrian Veseli scored.

“That made a nice comeback with that first goal and gave us some momentum,” Falli said. “But, then Batavia’s goalie made some nice saves and then they broke us down two more times.”

Batavia senior Erik Faessler did the damage, scoring twice in the final 11:26 of the first half to turn a close 2-1 game into a 4-1 lead for the Bulldogs.

“Those were huge,” Gianfrancesco said. “They really helped us after they

Competitive conference primes runners for regional

While defending 3A state champion Minooka ran away with the girls team championship at the Southwest Prairie Conference race, the boys title was a fight to the finish for eventual champion Plainfield South.

Less than 10 points separated the top three teams, with the Cougars (59) getting the edge over Minooka (67) and Oswego East (68). Plainfield North (91) was fourth, ahead of Oswego (103).

“We definitely knew it was going to be close,” Oswego East boys’ coach Jim Milner said. “You’d like it to go your way, but they competed well.”

Oswego East’s finished was buoyed by an individual runner-up finish by senior Dylan Zangri, who kept pace with eventual champion Soren Knudsen for much of the race before finishing 12 seconds behind with a time of 15:06.

Oswego East’s Jake Klancir was eighth overall with a time of 15:55 and Matthew Blanco clocked in at 16:14 to place 18th overall and secure an All-Conference finish with Zangri and Klancir. Chris Smith (16:19) and William Roeder (16:25) rounded out Os-

wego East’s top five, while Chris Luz (16:30) and Bradley Thornton (17:22) also raced for the Wolves.

Oswego’s Bennett Peterson secured a third-place individual finish in 15:38 to lead the Panthers, and Mitch Bradford joined Peterson with an All-Conference finish, taking 17th with a time of 16:11. Joe Fioresi (16:28), David Gaytan (16:30), Erik Kivela (16:39), Corey Saelens (16:44) and Brendan Pope (16:53) rounded out the Panther lineup.

“We definitely did not overly emphasize conference for the sake of our main goal of state-qualifying. If we want to get over the 22-year [state] hump, our focus needs to be in one place,” Oswego boys’ coach Dan Whipple said. “It was not a good day. It was not the team we’ve been. Conference was probably the least successful race we’ve run all season, but they came off the weekend very focused.”

The Oswego girls could not split up the Minooka front pack as the Indians placed three runners in the top four, led by race winner Emily Shelton’s finish in 17:22 to give the Indians a winning score of 25 points. Oswego secured second place with 71 points, while Plainfield North (88) and Oswego East (101) rounded out the top four.

“Minooka is currently ranked second [in state] and are probably going to have three runners in the top 10 at state. There’s not a whole lot you can do with them at this point,” Oswego girls’ coach Eric Simon said. “Our goal was to be as good as we can be. We were hoping to secure a solid second-place finish ahead of some good teams.”

Isabelle Christiansen was fifth overall in 17:47, Grace Pagone clocked in at 18:27 to take eighth and Ava Weyrich was 17th overall in 19:19 to give Oswego three All-Conference finishes.

“Being All-Conference, in our conference, is very good. It’s a tough conference and there will be a number of girls from our conference who will be All-State,” Simon said.

Caitlin Guist (19:31), Megan Berg (19:31), Jaycie Simon (19:49) and Sydney Luchyn (20:29) rounded out the top seven for the Panthers.

For Oswego East, Alexis Henz was an All-Conference finisher, placing 13th with a time of 18:57. Abby Flammersfeld (19:22) battled through sickness late in the race to finish 18th, and Amanda Bonczkowski (19:29) placed in the top 20. Kendra Standish (19:48) collapsed near the finish line, but managed to get up and cross the line, just

ahead of Morgan Ede (20:02), Isabella Gyori (20:06) and Elyssa Gall (20:22).

“We were battling well with Plainfield North, and with 400 [yards] to go, it was looking close. Literally between the time I saw them and the time they entered the chute, some crazy things happened,” Oswego East girls’ coach Lisa Cook said. “Our pack has really been working hard to keep moving up.

The last 400 meters at conference is so wild, that the girls who had less than great races are looking to get some retribution this week.”

Now, Oswego and Oswego East will race in the Class 3A Batavia Regional on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Kress Creek Farm in West Chicago.

State-ranked girls’ teams include No. 13 Metea Valley, No. 15 Batavia, No. 16 Neuqua Valley and No. 21 Oswego – with the first six teams advancing to the West Aurora Sectional.

State-ranked boys’ teams include No. 1 Neuqua Valley and No. 13 Marmion.

“We’re very confident that we’re going to get to sectionals. We have an outstanding regional and our path through the state series is one of the tougher ones,” Simon said. “You’ve got to step up and hope you can run as good as you can on that day.”

With the loss, Minooka is eliminated from playoff contention.

“We made some big mistakes that hurt us,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said. “Zach Gessner is going to be a fine quarterback. He threw the ball very well. The interceptions were due to his inexperience. I told him that sometimes you have to go through some bad times before achieving your rewards.

Now, Oswego East will look to close its regular season with an unprecedented eight-win season when the Wolves host Plainfield East (2-6) on Friday. The struggling Bengals dropped a 42-0 game to Plainfield North on Friday.

“We would like to defeat Plainfield East next week to set a school record for victories, and then make a long run into November, in the playoffs,” LeBlanc said.

Oswego East was very aware of the implications on the football field when traveling to Minooka on Friday night.

Minooka quarterback Zack Gessner and receiver Isaiah Hill had just connected three times in Minooka’s mustwin Southwest Prairie Conference game with Oswego East (7-1) on Friday night. But Oswego East quarterback Jaylon Banks was better, tossing five touchdown passes to three different receivers as the Wolves cruised to a 60-28 win.

“We knew this was a must-win for Minooka and that they would come at us with everything they had,” Banks said. “When they closed to 28-21, I told our team that we must respond to their challenge. I threw three and four touchdown passes, in lower-level games. It felt great to throw a career-high five touchdown passes, tonight.”

Oswego East built a 28-14 halftime lead before the Indians (3-5) took the second half kickoff, and Gessner drove the Indians 75 yards in five plays, hitting Hill from 9 yards out to make it 28-21 with 9:53 left in the third quarter.

Gessner, who was replacing the injured John Carnagio, threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns but also suffered four interceptions. His second pick led to a 31-yard touchdown strike from Banks (18 of 26 for 261 yards, five touchdowns) to Colin O’Reilly (four catches, 91 yards, two touchdowns) for a 34-21 lead with 3:10 left in the third quarter.

After stopping the Indians on a fourth-and-inch play at the Minooka 29 late in the third quarter, East scored the next 26 points.

“We knew Minooka had an outstanding offensive team. Jaylon (Banks) has been outstanding in his last two games for us: 260 yards passing and five touchdown passes – amazing,” Oswego coach Tyson LeBlanc said. “I was also very happy with the defense coming up with four interceptions.”

East’s Noah Jackson’s pick-six of a Gessner pass from 29 yards out made it 21-7 midway through the second quarter.

With East leading, 34-21, late in the third quarter, the Indians faced a fourth down and an inch at their 29.

Gessner appeared to have picked up the first down on a sneak but confusion reigned. Two measurements later, the Indians turned the ball over.

PANTHERS STILL PERFECT Drew White racks up 160 yards; defense shuts down Plainfield South

Unfortunately for Plainfield South coach Bill Bicker and his Cougars, that story is being told – and retold – at the worst possible time. On Friday, Oswego became the second straight team to post a shutout win over Plainfield South.

Oswego senior running back Drew White rushed for 160 yards on 34 carries and a touchdown while the defense allowed only 72 yards of total offense and had an interception return for a touchdown to propel the Panthers to a 21-0 Southwest Prairie Conference victory Friday over South.

“Drew (White) only has one gear,” Oswego coach Brian Cooney said. “We sometimes have to tell him to tone it down a bit but his hard work shows off on Friday night. He’s fun to watch.”

In addition to White, quarterback Levi Olson (8 of 16, 152 yards, TD) and senior wideout Elliott Pipkin (four catches, 104 yards, TD) also hurt the Cougars.

Defensive back Kyle Keeton made a big play with a 60yard interception return for a touchdown.

“Plainfield South always, always plays us tough,” Oswego coach Brian Cooney said. “We told our kids that and hopefully they bought into that. That is a good team we played but we have to be better.

Although Oswego compiled 337 yards of total offense, the Panthers might have been their own worst enemy, turning the ball over three times.

“We have a couple of wins this year that although they’re wins, they didn’t feel right,” Cooney said. “I’ll take them but they didn’t feel right and I’ll put this one tonight in that category.”

Oswego (8-0) couldn’t have asked for a better start as the defense forced a three-and-out and then the offense put together a five-play, 64-yard drive that was capped by a Olson to Pipkin 51-yard touchdown play that put the Panthers up 7-0. Later in the half, an interception in the end zone by the Cougars’ Angel Nixon thwarted an Oswego drive and South trailed only 7-0 at halftime.

“We told the boys at halftime that the opportunity was right there only being down one score,” South coach Bill Bicker said. “We really did not play that great in the first half but we felt good about ourselves and the position we were in.”

Oswego capitalized quickly in the second half, taking the kickoff and going 70 yards in five plays capped by a White 29-yard touchdown run that made it 14-0.

“They (South) gave us a run for our money tonight,” Cooney said.

Oswego will return home to close out the regular season against a winless Plainfield Central team before learning its Class 8A postseason assignment on Oct. 22.
