Official admits permit error Supervisor: Mistake made in not seeking village approval to build storage structures

tscott@kendallcountynow.com Oswego Township officials have acknowledged they made a mistake when the township recently erected structures on their property to cover salt and extra equipment without applying for a building permit from the village of Oswego.

Jay Hoover, the village’s building and zoning manager, said he and township officials met Aug. 25 to discuss the issue. In a letter to township officials, Hoover outlines the requirements to obtain building permits for “the membrane structures located and erected at 1150 Route 25” in Oswego.

“There were significant changes to the drainage, and storm water retention area, that should be addressed in the documentation provided for zoning approval and permitting as well,” Hoover wrote.

Hoover wrote that the structures “must be first approved by community development through the planning process. After zoning is approved, a building permit may be obtained.”

“After zoning approval is obtained a building permit must be applied for, and can be issued when application requirements and review process is complete,” Hoover wrote.

Gary I n a r e s p o n s e t o Grosskopf Hoover, Oswego Township Highway Commissioner Gary Grosskopf wrote that the township would “do everything we can to expedite this process.”

“The Oswego Township road district has begun the process of complying with all aspects of the letter mentioned above,” Grosskopf wrote. “We have hired Tebrugge engineering to

The contractor is permitted to work between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Monday through Friday. The contractor may work on Saturdays in special situations. The contractor is scheduled to complete all work by Nov. 11. The total contract cost is $980,888. Builders Paving of Hillside is the contractor.

For his part, Oswego Township Supervisor Jim Detzler said the buildings are structures used to cover road salt and extra equipment, and are not, to him, “constructable buildings.”

“They put the big hunks of cement and they put a canvas cover over it,” he said. “It’s not like a constructed building by any means. It’s just a big canvas cover that goes over the salt.”

Detzler acknowledged that the township made a mistake in not Jim Detzler applying for a building permit with the village but downplayed the issue.

“You would assume that you wouldn’t need a building permit to cover up your salt, you know,” he said. “Especially when it’s not really, in effect, a building. OK, so we made a mistake. We’ll get a building permit, and that ends it. It’s not the end of the world, you know.”

The Oswegoland Park District has announced it is expanding the market season into October.

While Sept. 25 will be the last day of the regular Oswego Country Market, the new Autumn Days at the Oswego Country Market extends the season by a few more weeks in the village’s downtown. This condensed harvest market will run Sundays, Oct. 2-23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. During these Autumn Days, the market will be set up entirely in the parking lot between Tripp Insurance and the Village Grind, leaving Main Street free for shoppers, and the Homecoming Parade on Oct. 2.

Bob Rung, an Illinois Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist whose work helped improve the ecosystems of the Fox River and Waubonsie Creek, died Monday. The longtime Boulder Hill resident was 71.

LeClercq recalled being among a group of volunteers who helped Rung plant lizard tail and water willows at the mouth of the Waubonsie Creek at the Fox River in what is now Hudson Crossing Park in downtown Oswego.

“He was so passionate about the Fox River and he really inspired me and I know he inspired many others,” LeClercq said, adding, “For me he’s one of those individuals that left a mark on my life and got me interested in the environment. He and [the late] Mike Brock [an Oswego High School ecology teacher] were all about the Fox River and inspiring others to try and do their part to clean it up.”

Looking back on Rung’s life as a shop owner and then with the IDNR, LeClercq said, “I think he did what he loved. When you measure someone’s life you wonder if they truly enjoyed what they did. In Bob’s case he absolutely did what he enjoyed and because of his passion I know he really inspired a lot of people.”

of the Oswegoland Park District, said Rung provided assistance to the park district in his role with the IDNR. As an example, Gray described Rung as being instrumental in providing the park district with information that helped the agency to secure funding in the late 1990s to remove the dam on the Waubonsie Creek in Oswego’s Stonegate Park.

The early 20th century dam had served to block fish passage in the creek for decades, which ultimately served to limit the fish population in both the creek and river.

When the dam was removed in the late 1990s, the creek was restored as an active piece of the Fox River ecosystem, Gray said.

“The result today is a much healthier creek and a healthier fish population in the Fox River,” Gray said.

Roger Matile, director of the Little White School Museum and Ledger columnist, said Rung was a “fishing fanatic” from the time his family moved to Boulder Hill.

Matile added, “Bob’s love of the river, I think, drove him to get the relevant educational credentials so he could join the IDNR and actually make a difference.”

In a statement issued Monday, the IDNR said Rung’s “energy and passion for river conservation were unmatched.” As an example, the statement noted that the water willow is now thriving along the banks of the Fox River thanks to Rung’s “tireless efforts.”

The agency also described Rung as “relentless with permit reviews” and someone who “never backed down from anybody.”

The statement continued: “He was a true fish nut and loved them all. If you knew Bob, you would not be surprised that he also threw himself into angling with equal energy and passion. Bob poured jigs, built rods, tied flies, and was always plotting his next fishing trip or strategy. He was well known as one of the best jig fisherman on the Fox River. As a DNR Technician years ago, he revised and updated electrofishing rigs for the whole State and won the Technician of the Year award for many years running.”

The statement concluded, “He was also a longtime crusader for dam removal. Bob will be remembered for the many things he did for Illinois streams over the years, but his most memorable asset was his generous spirit, and undying love for fish and fishing.”

After serving in Vietnam and earning a Purple Heart as a U.S. Army Combat medic, Bob Rung came home to the Boulder Hill subdivision and operated a pet shop for several years in the Wilhelm Building on Jefferson Street in downtown Oswego.

But Rung, who died Monday at the age of 71, stepped away from the shop in the 1980s as he embarked on a new career as an Illinois Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist whose work helped improve the ecosystems of the Fox River, Waubonsie Creek and other rivers and streams throughout the state.

John Rung, president of Shaw Media, the parent company of the Oswego Ledger, said growing up Bob was more like a father than a brother to him.

“I’m not sure where I’d be without him,” John Rung said. “Bob loved fishing, and he was passionate about conservation and his profession. But most of all he loved his wife, his children, and his growing family. He was truly a devoted husband, father and grandfather.”

Former Oswego Village President Brian LeClercq recalled that he first got to know Rung as one of the many local youths who would frequent Rung’s pet shop.

“Bob was so much fun. I remember going in his shop when I was a youngster and I knew I couldn’t afford a fish and he knew it, too, but he still gave me a guppy for free – a pregnant guppy. A few days after I brought it home I had tank full of fish,” LeClercq said.

Many years later, LeClercq said he reconnected with Rung in his role as a village official. By that time, Rung was working with the IDNR.

Opportunity taken to enhance courthouse Chances are most of the people who have cause to visit the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville really don’t want to be there. Courthouses can be grim places as people consult with their attorneys and await their cases to be called.

But as our news editor, Tony Scott, reported last week, the atmosphere inside the courthouse should be a little less imposing beginning next month when members of the Kendall Arts Guild and the county judiciary unveil a newly painted mural above the building’s security checkpoint in the main lobby.

Using donations along with the active support of Presiding Judge Timothy McCann, the KAG commissioned a professional artist, Eulojio “Joe” Ortega of Sandwich, to paint a mural featuring Kendall County themes. Without going into the specifics of the mural’s content, Ortega hinted that it will likely highlight some of the county’s natural beauty: the Fox River, our abundant farm fields and open spaces.

“When you see this mural it should feel like Kendall County. That’s the thing that’s most important,” Ortega said.

An unveiling for the mural is set for Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 4:30 p.m.

Examples of public art are rare in Kendall County and we’re pleased that the KAG and McCann saw an opportunity to enhance the courthouse with the mural.

It is our hope the mural, like other successful public art, will provide a moment of contemplation and reflection to all those who walk into the courthouse. Even better, may it give a sense to all who view it that they are in unique place with a rich history: Kendall County.

I suspect most people, hearing the word “archaeology,” tend to think of Indiana Jones searching for the Ark of the Covenant with much swash and buckle or Howard Carter seeing “wonderful things” as his flashlight pierced the gloom into King Tut’s tomb for the first time in a couple thousand years.

But archaeology, which happens right here in Illinois on a regular basis, is also vital to improving our understanding of the state’s past. Archaeologists have investigated the ancient people who hunted Ice Age mammals and lived in the Modoc Rock Shelter down in Randolph County, uncovered the extent of the huge city built by Native People surrounding soaring Monk’s Mound at Cahokia, and used scientific techniques to analyze and then interpret the lives of the state’s earliest European settlers at Starved Rock, Mort Massac, and New Salem.

Archaeology has even helped tell the story of Kendall County’s long history, with digs centered around both historic and prehistoric sites. Excavations at one of those sites, the Jensen Site in Oswego back in the summer and fall of 1987, documented the occupation of the area along Waubonsie Creek by Native People for more than 1,000 years. Some of the results of that dig are now on exhibit at Oswego’s Little White School Museum.

Archaeology can often answer the questions of what and how, but it’s not so good at determining why. We will never know, for instance, what those ancient people who lived on the bluff overlooking the creek thought or felt, although I suppose we could surmise that their feelings came and went much like our own do. We don’t know what they looked like, since no burials were found at the Jensen Site. But the excavations did end up telling us a good deal about how they lived, what they ate, and how they managed to survive.

While hunting was still important to their survival, Archaic people also began to depend on gathering other foodstuffs, such as nuts, berries and wild grains.

The Woodland Tradition, a successor to the Archaic culture, began about 2,500 B.C. Traces of Indians of the Late Woodland Tradition, which began about 700 or 800 A.D., were found at the Jensen Site.

According to Moreau S. Maxwell of Michigan State University, the small villages and campsites of the Late Woodland period are “located along the banks of minor rivers” from southern Illinois to as far north as Jo Davies County on the Wisconsin border. I’ve always found history fascinating, and especially enjoy learning about people and events in Montgomery’s early days. Since our village was founded in 1835 by Daniel Gray, thousands of residents have called Montgomery home and have left their mark on the community. Two events are coming up in October that will give the public an opportunity to learn more about our people and history.

Cemetery Walk – On the first Wednesday in October each year, a cemetery walk is held at Riverside Cemetery at 414 S. River Street where visitors can meet the “ghosts” of some of that cemetery’s occupants.

This year, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 5, guides will escort groups through the cemetery to meet the ghosts of a Civil War veteran, a woman who suffered many hardships during the Great Depression, a man who loves to reminisce about his childhood in the early 1900s and a member of the

The interesting stories they share will help visitors learn what life was like in Montgomery in bygone years, and will help keep their memories alive. Civil War Headstone Dedication – During the past year, volunteers have been working with Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) to identify and document all Civil War soldiers buried in Riverside Cemetery. They were able to document 54 Civil War veterans buried there, 17 of whom had no grave markers. SUVCW procured headstones from the Fed-

eral government that were installed this summer by Boy Scouts from Troops 41 and 11, who also cleaned existing headstones for the veterans.

At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, the new headstones will be dedicated in a brief ceremony near the cannon in Riverside Cemetery that will feature posting of the colors, a rifle salute and a period artillery salute. The public is invited to attend and bring a chair for comfort.

Q: Does Montgomery have a Historical Society?

A: In 2004 our Village Board created

a seven-person Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), whose members work to document and preserve the history of our community. Their first big project was the preservation of an 1840 home owned by Daniel Gray, which they restored with the help of grants and other fund raising efforts, and which now serves as the Settlers Cottage museum. Over the years the

HPC members and volunteers have also collected and cataloged more than 2,500 photos, documents and artifacts that relate to our history, operate and maintain Settlers Cottage, and organize the annual cemetery walk.

Q: How can I learn more about Montgomery’s history?

A: Just last year the HPC updated

and reprinted the comprehensive history of Montgomery first published in 1990 that covers Montgomery’s history up until around 1950. The book is available for purchase at the Village Hall and is also available at local libraries. In addition, be sure to visit the Settlers Cottage museum located in front of the Village Hall that is open from spring through fall. The displays in the museum change annually so there is always something new there to explore.

tscott@kendallcountynow.com A Kendall County judge has sentenced a Yorkville man to prison for stealing a car and possessing cocaine.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced Friday that Kendall County Judge Timothy McCann sentenced Nicholas Allgood, 37, of the 9000 block of Route 34 in Yorkville, to eight and a half years in state prison for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and two years in state prison for unlawful possession of a controlled

substance. Both sentences will be served concurrently, Weis said.

The charges stem from incidents that occurred on Nov. 3, 2015, in Oswego and Yorkville, Weis said.

According to Weis, charges were filed against Allgood when, in the early morning hours of Nov. 3, Yorkville police were dispatched to a Nicholas suspicious vehicle.

Allgood “Upon making contact with Allgood, who was the driver of the vehicle, the officer was able to observe that Allgood was using cocaine,” Weis said in a press release.

“Officers were able to collect additional cocaine from the person of Allgood.

Allgood was then transported to a local area hospital.”

Weis said Allgood has a criminal history that includes prior stolen vehicle cases, making this current offense a Class X felony.

“This type of sentence is necessary due to this defendant’s repeated violations of the criminal statutes,” Weis said. “With Allgood’s history of stealing cars, the judge was left with no other alternative but to sentenced Allgood to a term of prison that will prevent him from further criminal activities for some time.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Allgood will also be required to serve a term of mandatory supervised release, Weis said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Andrea Boyle prosecuted the case, and Allgood was represented by attorney Teresa McAdams, Weis said.

Jail, courthouse to get security updates

tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board approved a $3 million upgrade to security systems at the Kendall County Courthouse and the Public Safety Center, both in Yorkville, in a unanimous vote Tuesday.

The board agreed to award a contract to Security Automation Systems of Indianapolis for $3,006,655, one of four companies that bid on the project.

According to Sheriff Dwight Baird, the total bid includes a base bid, a 10 percent contingency, and two alternate additions: a four-inch conduit connection between the Public Safety Center and the courthouse, and an additional fiber optic cable to go into the four-inch conduit to provide a redundant path between the two facilities, according to Baird.

Baird said the original estimated cost of the project was $3.85 million.

Upgrades to the county’s video visitation and video bond call programs will be bid on at a future date, he said.

During a presentation to the County Board this summer, representatives from Dewberry, the project management firm for the upgrade, said they will update the analog camera system, intercommunications system, access control system and PLC-based security control system. Crews will also update cabling in the courthouse and Public Safety Center. They will also add a redundant fiber communication connection between the two buildings.

During the committee meeting, board member John Purcell, chairman of the board’s finance committee, said he was concerned about having money in the capital fund for a future courthouse expansion or build-out of the second floor at the courthouse.

“The issue for me is, when are we going to need to put $5 million, $6 million, $7 million into a courthouse expansion – that’s my real concern,” he said.

Judge Timothy McCann told the committee he doesn’t foresee the immediate need for such a project. He said six to 10 years ago, it was a different story.

“We thought by now we would be upstairs in the second floor, we’d probably have two more courtrooms functioning and so on,” McCann said. “The economy decided to throw a turn, so we’ve decided we don’t need to do that at this point. It is my expectation that we are at least three to five years away from even talking about anything like that. It will take another economic upswing, when you see housing starts and population jumping up again.”

He continued, “Undoubtedly at some point in time, Kendall County will be positioned to have more judges and a larger facility for us, but in the meantime, it’s not even in our long-

term plans. We have the [second-floor] space, we use it for other things – they’re actually training in the space today – but as far as actually developing it into courtroom space, my guess, and it’s purely a guess, we’re at least five years away from people looking at that.”

“I appreciate that,” Purcell responded.

McCann said he guessed it would cost $4 million to $5 million to add two courtrooms upstairs, or $1 million to $1.25 million for a courtroom to be added to the courthouse’s west side that “might buy you five years.”

“When we get to that point, you’re gonna want to get updated numbers and decide whether actually building expansion is more appropriate than going upstairs, but I can’t predict that,” he said.

McCann also commented on the planned updated video visitation and video bond call systems, which are estimated to cost $265,000.

“The systems we are looking at will do more than just provide for visitation and bond call,” he said. “It will provide for remote access, for not only the lawyers, public defenders, probation staff, state’s attorney. We will expand our use of video for court, so we will transport less people to court on a daily basis. This system will, in all likelihood, probably have the ability for residents of the jail to visit with families remotely, similar to a Skype type of situation, which means less people coming into the sheriff’s office.”

New cable provider signs agreement with county

tscott@kendallcountynow.com Residents of the Boulder Hill subdivision and other unincorporated areas in Kendall County will soon be getting another cable provider.

The Kendall County Board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a franchise agreement with cable television and phone service provider MetroNet. County Administrator Jeff Wilkins said the county and MetroNet have had discussions over the past year about a cable franchise agreement with the provider.

The franchise agreement would only apply to service provided to those customers in unincorporated areas of Kendall County, such as Boulder Hill and Shore Heights.

However, Wilkins said MetroNet has recently inked pacts with the villages of Oswego and Plainfield, and is

Wilkins said that Comcast was notified of the meeting, as were the Oswego Township supervisor and highway commissioner, and the issue was discussed at the County Board’s Committee of the Whole meeting last Thursday.

Montgomery petitions available for April election OSWEGO LEDGER Petitions and candidate information packets are now available at the Montgomery Village Hall Clerk’s Office for the April 4, 2017, Consolidated Election. Voters will elect a village president, village clerk and three trustee positions for four-year terms.

The village of Montgomery is a nonpartisan municipality. The first day to circulate nomination papers for the April 4 election is Sept. 20. The filing period for candidates seeking nomination for the April election is Dec. 12-19.

If there are 13 or more candidates filing for the three trustee positions, then a primary election would be held on Feb. 27, 2017. The winners of the primary

election would then be on the ballot for the April 4, 2017, Consolidated Election.

To be an eligible candidate for Montgomery elections, candidates must be a resident of the village for a year prior to the election; must be a registered voter; must not be in arrears in the payment of any tax or other indebtedness due to the village; and must not have been convicted in any court located in the United States of any infamous crime, bribery, perjury or other felony.

The village of Oswego’s Public Works Department will be flushing water mains during the two-week period of Oct. 3 to Oct. 14 (weather permitting).

Crews will begin flushing at 7 a.m.

Please do your laundry before that time or after 6 p.m. on these days to avoid rust discoloration of clothes. If your clothes become discolored, notify the Public Works Department at 630-554-3242.

The Public Works Department flushes all fire hydrants in April and September under the recommendation of the Illinois EPA. Flushing does a number of things including cleaning of water mains and producing fresh water to areas of the system that have low or very little usage.

Flushing cleans the water mains by running high flows of water through

fire hydrants to get rid of iron deposits that could produce colored water and, in some instances, plugged water meters.

Flushing also helps produce fresh water by opening hydrants at the end of water mains and pulling fresh water all the way to the end of the line.

This helps if a resident lives in a new subdivision that has little water usage.

If village crews are in your area, do not do laundry until after 6 p.m. on the days of flushing. Also, before running your hot water, run all cold water taps first to make sure the water is running clear. Only when it is running clear is when you want to run your hot water.

The department will be putting up signs to alert residents of the upcoming flushing. These signs will be placed throughout the village the week before the flushing. Residents are urged to watch for the signs.

Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley will seek a second term.

Brolley said he picked up nominating petitions at village hall Tuesday morning, the first day under state law the petitions can be circulated in the village.

Village voters will elect a village president and three trustees in the election set for April 4, 2017.

Brolley succeeded Marilyn Michelini as village president in 2013. Michelini chose not to seek another term as village president after serving in the position for three terms.

Asked why he has decided to seek a second term, Brolley responded, “I don’t think we’re done yet. We’ve come a long way working on a number of projects and in working with our neighboring communities and I want to continue that.”

Brolley added he continues to “thoroughly enjoy” serving as village president. He added, “I think we’ve had a successful first four years and are worthy of consideration for another term by the voters.”

Brolley said he believes that passage of a sales tax hike referendum in 2014 to provide long-term funding for the village’s street maintenance program has been the village’s most significant

accomplishment under his leadership.

He noted that he and other village officials and supporters worked on the referendum effort to build grassroots support for the measure for over a year prior to the 2014 vote.

Brolley added that the property tax rebates the village promised and now provides to village property owners as part of the referendum campaign were key in securing voter approval of the tax hike.

“The rebates have been popular with our residents,” he noted.

Brolley said he continues to believe village residents, in approving the referendum, have made a good investment in the village by providing a dedicated long-term funding source for street maintenance.

“It will work out well in the end,” he said.

Brolley said he is not aware of any other potential candidates for village president. He won election to the office in 2013 by defeating long-time board member Bill Keck.

“I haven’t heard of anything, but it doesn’t mean that there aren’t people out there that are interested [in running],” he said.

As village president, Brolley said he has strived to “be very open and willing to listen to all sides” on every issue.

“I hope the residents will see that,” he said.

OSWEGO LEDGER The eighth annual Cemetery Walk in Montgomery’s Riverside Cemetery will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Guests will be led through the cemetery in small groups to meet the fascinating “ghosts” of some of the early pioneers and other area residents who now occupy the cemetery. This is not a scary event, but more an opportunity to learn about the past from authentically costumed actors who will portray some of the people buried in the cemetery.

This year’s event will highlight a Civil War veteran, a woman who lived through the Great Depression, a man who loves to reminisce about his childhood in the early 1900s and a member of the large Albright/ Albrecht family whose common ancestor came here from Germany around 1870.

Tours will begin near the corner of River and Taylor streets on the south side of the ceme-

tery about every 10 minutes, so visitors can arrive any time between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Parking is available along River Street and at the playground at the north end of Montgomery Park. Visitors are encouraged to bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes.

The Cemetery Walk is organized by Montgomery’s Historic Preservation Commission.

There is no charge for this event. In the event of rain, the Cemetery Walk will take place on Thursday, Oct. 6, at the same time.

An indoor re-enactment of the Cemetery Walk will take place in the Board Room of the Montgomery Village Hall at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, as part of the Village’s Senior Program.

Volunteers are being sought to serve as guides to escort the groups through the cemetery.

There was such debate over the winner of the Best Bridge Brew (overall Best of Show), that there were two co-winners. Thank you to Brandon Wright of Werk Force Brewing Co. and Steve Adams and Mike Billy of the Tangled Roots Brewing Company for partnering to ramp-up the winning Best Bridge Brews and serve one on tap in each of their tasting rooms. Winners were James Addis for “Not Another Oktoberfest” (Marzen with Rye) and Tony Daniels for “The Dirty Dozen - Cherry Edition” (Belgian Quadruple Ale).

The special Brew Newbie Award (for the highest scoring entry from someone who has never entered a contest before) went to David LeForce for “The Frog” (Saison).

Several Home Brew clubs participate in Brew at the Bridge, and this contest has allowed them the opportunity to earn some serious bragging rights. They were able to vie for the traveling “King of Clubs” trophy that went to the club that has the highest average score for all of their entries. The Spent Grain Society will get to hang on to the trophy until next year, when the results of the 2017 Best Bridge Brews Home Brew Contest will determine if it gets a new home.

The Oswegoland Park District hosted the inaugural Best Bridge Brews Home Brew Contest on Friday. This new contest was held in connection with the Brew at the Bridge Craft Beer Festival in downtown Oswego Saturday.

Over 40 entries were received in five different categories. Judges were from the 51st Street Ward Beer Company and Tangled Roots Brewing Company.

In the Belgians category, first place went to Tony Daniels for “The Dirty Dozen - Cherry Edition” (Belgian Quadruple Ale), second place went to Michael Jacobs for “Next to the Farmhouse Ale” (Saison), and third place went to David LeForce for “The Frog” (Saison).

In the Hoppy category, first place went to Kevin Holt for “Ishallah” (American IPA), second place went to Paul Herrara for “WPA” (Wheat APA), and third place went to Chad Marvin for “Hockey Hair” (Pale Ale).

In the Light Ales & Lagers category, first place went to James Addis for “Not Another Oktoberfest” (Marzen with Rye), second place went to Chad Marvin for “May the Schwarz Be With You” (Schwarzbier), and third place went to Michael Jacobs for “Ein Gelbes Bier” (German Helles Exportbier).

After falling to the Indians during dual match play on Aug. 22, Oswego has won eight consecutive matches to improve to 8-1 overall.

Oswego wraps up SPC dual action this week against Plainfield South and Plainfield Central before hosting the SPC tournament at Fox Bend Golf Course on Sept. 28. Teams receive points for dual match wins, and additional points for their place in the tour-

nament for a cumulative point total to determine the overall SPC champions.

Despite the earlier loss to Minooka, Oswego still has a chance to surpass the Indians with a strong showing at Fox Bend next week.

“Minooka is still the cream of the crop in our conference, but with conference being at our place, our guys are feeling pretty confident going in,” Oswego coach Chad Pohlmann said.

“Golf is a funny game and you have to take every swing as it comes. You can’t get too excited if you play well and you can’t get down if you play bad. You have to keep that level head.”

“Heritage Bluffs is a tough course.

It’s long and tight and there’s trouble on almost every hole,” Pohlmann said.

“Minooka’s scores have leveled off, but they’re still a dangerous team.”

On Sept. 13, Oswego posted a season-low 149 to win a triangular meet with Lincoln-Way Central (164) and

Sandburg (174). Oswego also picked up a 163-178 win over Joliet Central on Sept. 14. Zach Krisch led with a 39 followed by Prentice (40), Lee (41) and Schlegel (43).

“The guys have done a lot of good things so far,” Pohlmann said. “We’ve consistently been in the 150s, and that’s going to compete with the better teams in our area. Craig has had an outstanding year. He’s been our most consistent scorer,” Pohlmann said. “Kobe has been right there and Mason Lee has also had a good start to the year. Those guys have anchored us, and they’ve put in a ton of time over the summer with junior events in the area.”

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The PepsiCo Showdown came just at the right point in the Oswego soccer season.

After an 0-6-1 start to the season, the Panthers notched their first win in a 4-0 shutout over Chicago Jones to open the tournament bracket on Sept. 10. Oswego moved into the second round on Sept. 13 and picked up a 2-1 victory over Bolingbrook to advance to the semifinal round last Thursday.

“We started to turn things around and started to figure out some things and get more comfortable playing with each other,” Oswego coach Brian Falli said. “You get that first W, and you get more confident. Things started rolling. It was a good three-game stretch for us.”

Oswego (2-7-1) traveled to Lincoln-Way West and lost 2-1 to bow out of the PepsiCo Showdown. After a scoreless first half, Lincoln-Way West took a 1-0 lead before Julian Ibarra scored off an assist from Omar Carreno with 10:00 remaining. Oswego scored an own goal with 22 seconds remaining to seal the Panthers’ fate.

“That Lincoln-Way West game felt more like a regional game than a Pepsi tournament game,” Falli said.

“There was a lot on the line and the atmosphere was just everything out on the field.

We actually had guys in tears after the game because it was a hard-fought match on both sides. To get so close, we definitely learned a lot after that game. We learned we could come back from a goal down and we had chances at the end. Unfortunately, it was a bad break late in the game.”

Oswego will now look for its first win in the Southwest Prairie Conference after two early losses to Plainfield North and Minooka. The Panthers face Joliet West on Saturday at 10 a.m. before meeting Romeoville and Oswego East next week.

“If you look back to our last four games compared to our previous six, we’re scoring goals and we’re in games.

We can look back and see situations we needed to fix, and we fixed them moving on,” Falli said. “Lincoln-Way was a heartbreaker, but we’re getting back on the field and fixing those mistakes. The guys are ready and we’re prepared.”

Tiny Mites vs Robbins Cal Park Eagles: The Oswego Bears lost their first game of the season.

Aiden Conner, Jacob Cale, Kenny Robertson and Ethan McGee made several key blocks for the Bears. Quarterback Zachary Gilson had several good runs. Defensively, Luke Hernandez and Cameron Logan created all kinds of chaos for the Eagles backfield. Aidan Cullen led the team in tackles.

Mitey Mite vs Lockport Jr Porters: The Oswego (4-0) did not allow a first down all day. Linebackers Damien Lewandowski, Jayden Kersh and Brayden Swanson bottled up the Jr Porters offense every time they ran a play. On offense, the Bears leaned heavily on Brogan Mello (two TDs) and Dominic Batista (two TDs).

Jr PeeWee vs Robbins Cal Park Eagles: The Oswego Bears won 32-0. Jackson Gillen striped the ball from the Robbins running back and scored the first touchdown. Zac Clarke punched in another TD. Chase Gerwig connected with Gillen

for the extra point. Gillen scored his second TD of the day after an Eagles turnover on downs.

Tyler Bibbs and Christian Martyn also scored.

Chris Dicosola, Andrew Wiggins, Nick Tickle and Zac Clarke added a sack each and Chase Gerwig had his fourth interception of the season.

PeeWee vs Lockport Jr Porters: The Oswego Bears lost 26-0. Jackson Fuller and Eamon Cain provided excellent blocking for Matt Gandy, Matt Rodarte and Colin Rowe who had many yards rushing. Casey Krahula, Connor Mannis, Pierce Rowley and Ronan Cornelius led the defense in tackles.

JrVarsity vs Robbins Cal Park Eagles: The Bears lost 13-6. The defense, led by Dylan Scott and Cole Hansen, was able to shut out Darien during the last three quarters. The offensive line of Noel Alvarez, Jackson Robertson, Matthew Engelke, Sergio Jaimes, Jacob Plohr held strong with help from Jordan Logan and Tyler Bibbs, Austin Johnson was able to score the Bears sole touchdown.

East tennis knocks off defending champs OSWEGO LEDGER

The Oswego East tennis team notched a 4-3 win over Plainfield North, the defending Southwest Prairie Conference champs, on Sept. 13.

Plainfield North won at No. 1 singles and No. 3 singles, but Kaija Harlow won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Plainfield North won at No. 1 doubles to take a 3-1 lead in the match, but Oswego East swept the remaining three doubles courts.

Annie Carmody and Keertan Kota won 6-3, 6-2 at second doubles, Ravina Shah and Angel Javier won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles and Payton Dude and Mackenzie Knudson won 6-3, 6-4 at fourth doubles.

The Wolves are now 7-2 overall and 5-0 in conference.

Oswego East Boys: The Wolves (1-6, 1-5) dropped a tough match to Plainfield Central, 176-175, on Sept. 14. Collmann Aaron was the medalist with a 41, followed by scores from Sam Behnke (43), Ethan Lindblad (46) and Alex Hwang (46).

Oswego JV: The Panthers defeated Joliet at Blackberry Oaks by a score of 180- 237. The Panthers were led by Ryan Prusak who shot 42, Patrick Hranka (45), Blake Ginn (46), and Andrew Aagesen (47).

The Oswego East soccer team has been a slow starter this season.

The Wolves opened the year with three straight losses before finding their identity, and during Thursday’s PepsiCo Showdown game against Kaneland, Oswego East fell behind early, 1-0.

That initial scuffle seemed to wake the Wolves up as they hammered home four consecutive goals to build a comfortable lead in a 4-2 victory on their home field.

“It was a slow start, but we settled in. When they scored it kind of woke us up,” Oswego East coach Steve Szymanski said. “It’s kind of like how we started our season. We gave up 16 goals in our first few games and then we only gave up one in our next three, so we’ve slowly been building our confidence and getting better.”

Oswego East (5-5-1) tied the score on freshman Kyle Blasingame’s first goal of his career. Called up specifically for this tournament, and playing in just his third varsity game, Blasingame was far from bashful in knotting the game at 1-1.

“I kind of expected the ball to come

“Manuez, Ford and Michael have been carrying the load for us and they all played well,” Szymanski said. “And then to have a kid like Kyle step in and play like he has, that’s really helped.”

Oswego East is now 2-1 in tournament play, dropping its opener to South Elgin before taking a win over Whitney Young.

The Wolves also beat Whitney Young in the PepsiCo after losing to South Elgin in their tournament opener. They also played well in Hinsdale Central’s Red Devil Invite tournament and will look to use the experience of those two tournaments as they now focus primarily on conference play.

“Obviously we wanted to win the first game in the tournament, but we didn’t,” Szymanski said. “But the guys bounced back and now we’ll move on to conference and that’s where we want to be now.”

Kaneland (3-6-1) got a goal from Tucker Jahns early in the first half, but its lead wouldn’t last for long. Angel Escontrias concluded the scoring for the Knights.

“We are learning as we go,and our schedule is incredibly tough as well,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “We have a couple of mental mistakes a game right now and we are paying for them. We have talked about punishing teams when they make a mistake, and right now our opponents are punishing us for our mistakes. It’s a learning experience.”

Wolves break in Cougars’ new turf

sports@kendallcountynow.com It took all of 13 seconds for Oswego East to christen the newly installed artificial field turf at Plainfield South High School with its first bad memory.

Oswego East sophomore wideout Justin Clark exploited a huge hole in the middle of the Cougars coverage and returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown that propelled the Wolves to a 40-19 victory over host Plainfield South in Southwest Prairie Conference action Friday night.

Star senior running back and University of Iowa commit Ivory Kelly-Martin led the Wolves with 141 yards rushing on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns.

“That start really gave momentum to our defense,” Kelly-Martin said. “We had a little bit a rough patch during the middle of the game, but we were able to overcome it.”

East also had significant contributions from seniors wideout Kijana Caldwell (3 catches, 44 yards, TD) and quarterback Jaylon Banks (10-of-20, 106 yards, TD). Plainfield South (2-2) was led by seniors quarterback Nicolas Deppe (18-of-32, 216 yards, TD) and wide receiver Tom Macari (6 catches, 116 yards, TD) Oswego East (4-0) might have been their own worst enemy during the game as they were able to overcome double-digit penalties and three turnovers in the victory.

“We discussed as a team that we’re going to be in games like these and we’ll see what kind of moxie we have,” Oswego East coach Tyson LeBlanc said.

Leading 7-0, Oswego East’s special teams made a splash when senior defensive lineman Colin O’Reilly blocked the Cougars first punt of the game that gave the Wolves the ball on the South 15-yard line. Two plays later, Kelly-Martin scored on a 2-yard touchdown run that extended the East lead to 14-0 with 9:43 left in the opening quarter.

“This type of win is going to help us as we get into the meat of our schedule,” Kelly-Martin said.

The Cougars displayed some of their own resolve as they put together a six-play, 82-yard drive that culminated with a Nick Portz 9-yard touchdown that closed the deficit to 14-7 with 7:02 left in the first quarter.

The crosstown football game between Oswego and Oswego East will take place on Sept. 30 at Oswego East. The sophomore game begins at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity game at 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $4 for adults, $2 for students (grades K-12) and $1 for senior citizens.

Advance tickets for the Crosstown Football game will be sold online at OEHS and OHS, beginning at 8 a.m. Sept. 26, as well as in the athletic offices and security areas at both schools. Each school has 1,500 tickets available. Once tickets are sold out, there will be no exceptions. Gates open at 4 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at statechamps.com/clients/oswegoeasthsil. Parking lots will be closed when full. Satellite parking with shuttle service will be available from Bednarcik Junior High, Plank Junior High and Oswego High School. Shuttles will begin at approximately 4:30 p.m. and run until 30 minutes after the end of the varsity game.

Oswego East responded in kind when Banks connected with Caldwell for a 22-yard touchdown that pushed the Wolves lead back up to 21-7 with 9:36 left in the half. Kelly-Martin then struck again as he broke free of several arm tackles by the Cougars defense and scored on a 45-yard touchdown run for a 27-7 lead.

Later in the game and trailing 30-13, Deppe found a wide open Macari who had gotten behind the East secondary for a 76-yard touchdown that made it 30-19 with 2:44 left in the third quarter however, that was the closest South would get.

“There are some things that we need to clean up especially the penalties,” LeBlanc said. “It seemed like every time we had a big play we had a big penalty but we’ll take the win. I would rather win ugly than not in any week.”

Oswego East will now travel to Plainfield North (3-1), winner of a 61-14 game over Minooka on Friday.

Pratscher went 11 of 16 for 98 yards and one INT, but was also sacked five times – twice by Dayne Millard and twice by Noah Shannon, who also forced a fumble with his quarterback hit.

“We just fixed a couple things and a couple formations, and we just went from there,” Shannon said. “It was just two tune ups, and we were fine.”

Millard’s final sack on third-andfive forced Plainfield East to punt the ball with 4:28 to play – which was just enough time for Oswego add some insurance onto the scoreboard. Marra carried the ball five times in the series, finishing with a 26-yard touchdown with 1:35 to go.

“The blocking was fantastic and in the second half everyone stepped up,” Marra said. “I can’t thank my offensive line enough; they did a fantastic job giving me the opportunity with those holes.”

Cooney spoke highly of Marra, who

had a breakout game with 113 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns.

Oswego’s 27-point output is also a positive stat for the Panthers after scoring a combined 26 points through its first three games.

“There are kids who pushed through the fourth quarter. When everyone else was getting tired, Nick Marra just kept trucking. That was good to see,” Cooney said. “It was good to see them put that many balls into the end zone.

We haven’t seen that yet.”

The Oswego defense has allowed just 12 points through four games, giving up a 35-yard field goal late in the first half. Plainfield East’s remaining 14 points came on a pair of interception returns for scores.

“The defense buckled down soon enough to hold them to a field goal.

We’d like to get off the field quicker, but if they give up a field goal, that’s OK. The kids came back and made the necessary adjustments,” Cooney said.

“We made it a point over the summer to install everything. We’ve got a good foundation.”

Oswego now travels to Romeoville on Sept. 23 for its Week 5 matchup. The Spartans (0-4) lost 21-16 to Joliet West on Friday.

“Last week we made it a goal to have it be the turning point in our season and really focus,” Millard said.

“We all want the same thing and we’re striving for it.”

Oswego runners get first taste of Detweiller Park Bennett Peterson finishes 11th at Steelmen Invite on Saturday; Grace Pagone leads girls in top 25

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com After impressive starts at the Parkside Invite in Wisconsin and Joliet’s annual Steelmen Invite, the Oswego cross country teams got a broader picture of the talent in Illinois last Saturday at Detweiller Park.

The Panthers raced in the annual Richard Spring Invite hosted by Peoria Notre Dame. The Oswego boys finished 10th in the 58-team team field, while the girls finished 14th overall.

“Overall, we had the majority of the team with a mix of season best and lifetime best times,” Oswego boys coach

Dan Whipple said. “Knowing where we’ve been the past few weeks and gaining the confidence, we were definitely hoping to be in that range. I was pleased to see that.”

Bennett Peterson led the Panthers with his 11th-place finish, clocking in at 15:05 through a sluggish course that took in nearly five inches of rain this month. Mitch Bradford (16:06) and David Gaytan (16:06) finished with identical times and Joe Fioresi (16:07) was on their heels. Brandon Nelson (16:15), Brendan Pope (16:17) and Corey Saelens (16:21) rounded out the top seven while Erik Kivela (16:25), Keegan Murphy (16:41) and Collin Boone (16:49) also

competed for Oswego.

“Right now it’s that space between one and two, but I was really happy to see our two through seven that tight,” Whipple said. “I think with the confidence of the group, we can start to chip away at that.”

Grace Pagone led the girls’ squad with a time of 18:24.5 to finish 23rd overall. Caitlin Guist (19:38) also finished in the top 100 while Megan Berg (19:40), Megan Choi (19:57), and Ava Weyrich (20:09) packed together to complete Oswego’s top five. Sydney Luchyn (20:04), Jenna Yakesh (20:22), Jaycie Simon (20:24) and Kacie Moran (20:44) also clocked in for Oswego.

“Grace has been running really well this year. She’s really, really strong right now coming off a strong track season and rolling right into cross country,” Oswego girls coach Eric Si-

mon said. “There are 498 runners in the field and some very good teams, so when you’re in that upper echelon there, that’s a good run. ... We feel like we have a good one-two punch up front and what’s going to be critical for us is our three through seven. We have to make sure that pack keeps evolving.

It’s a good pack and they’re running fairly tight.”

The Oswego girls’ team will take this weekend off from racing before entering the Peoria Invite on Oct. 1. The boys race at Busse Woods on Saturday at the Hoffman Estates MacNider Invite.

“We’re going to continue to take it a week at a time; it’s been working well,” Whipple said. “It’s just focusing on the day and what we can do going into each week and not over-thinking things. If we continue to do that, we’ll be in a good place.”

Both offenses sputtered on Friday night, but in the end it, Oswego’s defense proved to be better than the one Plainfield East put on the field.

Despite two interception returns for touchdowns, Plainfield East was held to -7 yards in the second half as Oswego (4-0) rallied from a 17-7 deficit to defeat the Bengals 27-17 on Friday.

“Six seconds, let it go and get back in the huddle,” Oswego coach Brian Cooney said of the interceptions. “Every week we have to clean things up.

We can’t be giving up points on offense. It’s something we’ll continue to work on.”

Plainfield East (2-2) broke onto the scoreboard with a 35-yard field goal with 3:42 to play in the first half, but Oswego’s offense responded immediately on the ensuing possession. Nick Marra had a big 13-yard run for a first down into Plainfield territory before quarterback Levi Olson found Elliott Pipkin for a 21-yard gain. After another catch by Pipkin and a holding call on Plainfield East, Marra scored from the 2-yard line with 58 seconds left in the half.

“I’m glad that before the first half ended we were able to punch one in and get some confidence,” Cooney said. “I’m learning from this offense that their confidence goes a long way.”

But the second half didn’t open with any offensive fireworks. Plainfield East’s David Salazar intercepted Olson and returned the ball 71 yards into the end zone on the first possession of the second half. Salazar got his hands on another Olson pass just 15 seconds later, but the Bengals got in just two plays before quarterback Matt Pratscher was intercepted by Josh Shodipo.

Blake Coughlin made the third pickoff, returning this one 89 yards for a Plainfield East touchdown and a 17-7 lead with 4:01 to play in the third quarter.

Oswego answered with a five-play, 55-yard drive to cut Plainfield East’s lead to three with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Olson to Tanner Sohst. The Panthers recovered the onside kick and kept the Bengals’ offense off the field into the fourth quarter. When Pratscher finally got back on the field, Plainfield East fumbled on its own 4-yard line with 10:11 to play in the fourth quarter.

Marra scored on the first play from scrimmage to put Oswego ahead, 20-17.

“We got beat up front. Their defensive line beat our offensive lineup front,” Plainfield East coach Mike Romeli said. “I think that right there was the main reason. Our defense was on the field for the whole second half. You can’t win games like that, even though our defense played exceptional.”

sports@kendallcountynow.com A two-game sweep over Joliet Central in Tuesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference girls volleyball tilt was another positive sign for Oswego East.

The visiting Wolves prevailed in two games, 25-11 and 25-15. After a 4-4 start to the season, the girls volleyball team has remained above the .500 mark in September, improving to 11-9 overall with the win over the Steelmen.

“We have had our ups and downs this season,” said Oswego East senior Allison Bertrand, who led the Wolves with seven kills. “We have switched some things around and are playing better. We are definitely headed in the right direction.”

In Set 1, Central won the initial point, but Oswego East scored the next five to go up 5-1. Central fought back to get within four, at 8-4, but Oswego East took advantage of unforced errors by the Steelmen and found their rhythm en route to the first game win.

The second game saw the same start, with a 1-0 Central lead as the game went back and forth, that included five ties early. Oswego East was only up 11-9, but went on an 11-0 run to go up 22-9.

Central responded with six consecutive points to make it 22-15, but that was as close as they would come.

Fellow senior Meghan Delaney added five kills, recorded two aces and had six digs on the night.

“I love the big hit,” Delaney said.

“It’s such a rush when you go up and get that point. It really gets everyone fired up. I really think we are starting to find our niche right now. The line-up right now has good chemistry, but we still need to work on our total game as a team.”

The other big hitter on the team is Gabrielle Campbell, a senior, who really enjoys her role. She added four kills in the match.

“I love my role on this team,” Campbell said. “But when I get a big kill, it’s because of what my teammates have done to get me that opportunity. This has been fun and we are getting better as the season goes on. We are together as a team.”

that chemistry,” Thurlwell said. “It’s coming, but we still have a long way to go. I would say that we should have been playing like this at the end of August, not on September 20th. But this team has the work ethic and it won’t take much to catch up to where we should

be. We are really looking for consistency from match to match. We are working on our weaknesses, it will take some time, but this team has the potential.”

Hannah Bornemann had 11 assists, to go along with two aces. Katie Ayers chipped in with seven assists and Abbie Crusen had five digs.

“We took the defending conference champions (Plainfield Central) to three games last week,” Bertrand said. “We were second in this past weekend’s tournament – I like where we are right now and we will only get better.”

Oswego East makes another road trip on Thursday to face Joliet West before returning home to face Romeoville on Sept. 27.

Plainfield Central 2, Oswego East 1: On Sept. 13, the Wolves lost to Plainfield Central 21-25, 25-22, 7-25. Meghan Delaney had eight kills, one block and

three aces. Sarah Schultz had seven kills and nine digs and Jaalah Williams made four kills. Hannah Bornemann had 11 assists and Morgan Boardwine had 11 digs.

Oswego East 2, Plainfield South 0: The Wolves won 25-11, 25-20 on Sept. 15. Sarah Schultz had 10 kills and Meghan Delaney made nine. Hannah Bornemann made 13 assists while Morgan Boardwine had 10 digs and Delaney added eight.

Glenbard West Invite: Oswego East finished second in the Glenbard West Invite last Saturday. The Wolves went 1-1 in pool play with a win over Lake Park and a loss to Glenbard South. In bracket play, Oswego East defeated Oswego 26-28, 25-21, 25-23 and won over Joliet West to face host Glenbard West in the title game. The Wolves lost 25-15, 25-17.
