Fiber-optic company eyes Oswego market Metronet looking to bring Internet, phone, TV service to village

By ERIKA WURST news@kendallcountynow.com Oswego residents frustrated with their Internet, television and phone services could have another option.

Metronet, an Indiana-based company that provides fiber optic communication services, is looking to bring its fiber network to the village, and trustees said on Monday the situation seems like a win-win for the community.

Metronet was founded in Evansville, Indiana, in 2004 and has expanded throughout Indiana and Illinois ever since.

Two years ago, the company first looked into bringing service to Oswego, a push that might soon become a reality.

“Your community demographic is exactly what Metronet is looking for,” Metronet’s Kathy Scheller told trustees during a Committee of the Whole meeting presentation.

Scheller said the fiber technology would do wonders for local businesses, as well as residents who are tired of buffering and slow Internet speeds.

By using fiber, “we can keep expanding the network indefinitely (to fulfill consumer needs),” Scheller said. “It’s a future-proof network.”

In addition to faster speeds, the new partnership would foster “job creation, innovation and economic growth” within the village, Scheller said.

Technicians and business folks working for Metronet would be hired locally.

The company, which prides itself on customer service, would also open a retail store staffed with associates

and technicians who live in the area.

“We find that it is always reassuring to see a familiar face when your services are installed or when you stop by our store,” the company website states.

Scheller said that once people see how fast the Internet speeds are in person, they are more likely to sign up for the services.

“It’s something a lot of people don’t realize until they do, and then they see the value. Education is a component for people to understand what this [fiber service] is,” she said.

Currently hundreds of miles of fiber are being laid in Plainfield, where Metronet will be offering its services to residents later this month. Scheller said the company is looking to expand its footprint across the Fox Valley in the future.

As for pricing, Scheller said Metro­ net’s services won’t have much more impact on your pocketbook than what’s currently being offered in Oswego.

“A lot of times, our pricing is extremely competitive,” she said. “We don’t come to a market where we will out-price ourselves.”

But, residents won’t be seeing faster speeds all that soon.

State law requires that Metronet enter into a franchise agreement with the village, which covers topics such as construction time frame, service levels and use of right-of-ways.

The purpose of Monday’s meeting was to solely review general franchise agreement provisions that Metronet has proposed. A formal franchise application will follow at a later date.

The franchise requires a public hearing and 30-day notice period before final approval.

Once everything is in place, Metronet would begin lying down its fiber in Oswego, which could take an additional nine to 12 months.

BRIEF Hilltop Gardeners’ 50th annual plant sale is Saturday

The Hilltop Gardeners will host their annual plant sale at Fox Bend Golf Course Pavilion, 3516 Route 34 in Oswego, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 7, rain or shine.

This event marks the 50th year since the club’s first sale at the Boulder Hill Market in 1966. Proceeds of the sale are used to beautify the Oswegoland area, offer scholarships and provide educational programs for anyone interested in gardening and nature, as well as many other projects.

In addition to the plant sale, there will be a bake sale, raffle and “white elephant” sale of garden-themed items. Esther Jamison, who chairs the event, said that the gift basket for the raffle has 50 items in it, including two gift cards and several garden items.

A handmade quilt and large potted spruce are also being raffled. A party for garden club members will be held on Friday during setup for the sale as part of the 50th year special celebration.

The small barn at the right in this 1910 photo was purchased in December by the Oswego Public Library District along with 3 acres of adjoining property. The barn is located on North Street, near Route 25. Adjoining property owners are concerned the library district may have the barn razed. the land so they could sell the buildings to someone else.

He also said they have no plans for the two buildings at this time and added that they definitely do not plan to raze them.

He said the land was offered to adjacent owners, the village of Oswego and the Oswegoland Park District and none of them wanted to buy it, so it was offered to the library district.

Tamblyn said they have a vested interest in the land because it is directly across the creek from the library.

Tia McCarthy suggested the board could sell just the barn and keep the rest of the property, but Tamblyn said they did not buy it so they could sell off pieces of the property.

“If you’re not going to use it, we could use it. We had been using it. It’s a beautiful barn,” Tia McCarthy added.

Tamblyn said they have agreed to help resolve a problem with the utili-

ties that go across the newly acquired land to the McCarthy home.

When asked if the board could rent the barn, Tamblyn said they could, but added that he was not sure anyone would want to rent a barn that had historical significance.

Vernita Hettrich, board president, said the library district may use the barn for storage. Or, it may purchase a van for moving books between the Oswego Campus Library and the Montgomery Campus Library, and could keep the van parked in the barn.

Tia McCarthy said she has spent much time in the barn and would like to see it restored to its original historical condition.

She said the barn was built by the owner of her family’s house before he built the house, so he lived in the barn until the home was finished. This was in the early 1900s, she added.

Police: Group of men told girl to get in their car in Boulder Hill OSWEGO LEDGER The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspicious incident that occurred April 29 at 2:57 p.m. at Long Beach Road and Winrock Road in the Boulder Hill subdivision.

Police said a 14-year-old girl reported that she was walking in the area when she was approached by five unknown males riding in a black Hyundai. The

males appeared to be in their early 20s, and four of them appeared to be black and one appeared to be white.

A male seated on the rear passenger side rolled down the window and asked the girl to get inside the vehicle. The male was described as having dreadlocks with caramel-colored tips. The girl immediately ran home and the vehicle departed in an unknown direction.

More than a dozen residents attended the Oswego Public Library District Board meeting on April 27 in hopes of getting some questions answered about land purchased in December by the library district.

The land is north of the library district’s downtown Oswego Campus Library and across Waubonsie Creek from the north side of the library.

The residents attended the meeting, some for the third time in three months, to find out what the board plans to do with the near three-acre parcel of land at 19 North St. that it purchased for $175,000. It had been appraised for $150,000.

Among those at the April 27 meeting were Pat and Cecelia McCarthy, and their daughter, Tia, residents of 175 N. Madison St., which is adjacent to the property purchased by the library district. The parcel the library purchased and the McCarthy’s property were one large parcel before being divided by a previous owner.

The parcel purchased by the library district has a large three-level barn and small house on part of the land.

Some residents say the barn has historical value and asked park trustees on April 27 if they would sell the barn to them rather than raze it and the house, which trustees said at past meetings that they planned to do.

Trustee and board secretary Terry Tamblyn said they did not purchase

the fact that we own it. We’ll have to do something with the utilities first,” Tamblyn said. He emphasized that it is not the board’s intention to sell the barn at this time but could not speak about the future.

Pat McCarthy read a letter to the board, but the board did not offer a response.

He asked why the library needs the small parcel on which the barn is located, and suggested they sell the barn, which would allow his family to preserve a significant building and piece of Oswego history.

He said taxpayers would save the cost of razing the barn and removing the debris.

McCarthy also noted that even though Tamblyn had said at a previous meeting that the barn could not be insured, his insurance agent would provide insurance on the barn.

No date was set for the board to answer the residents’ questions but they plan to attend the May board meeting which will be held at the Montgomery campus.

Now that the property is owned by a taxing body, the more than $6,000 in property taxes will no longer be generated for the taxing bodies each year.

In other business, the board learned that it will still receive a per capita grant from the state of Illinois, despite the impasse over the state budget.

But the total amount of the grant, $45,381, is the smallest it has been since 2004, when the grant was $41,786.

The grant amount is 77 cents as measured per person, the smallest it has been since 1985, when it was 53 cents, director Sarah Skilton told trustees.

Judge correct to press Hastert on extent of crimes Federal Judge Thomas M. Durkin did not mince words April 27 in sentencing former U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert to a 15-month jail term in a sexual abuse-hush money case. Durkin called Hastert a “serial child molester” and described his attempt to accuse one of his victims of extortion as “unconscionable.”

In addition to jail time, Durkin ordered Hastert to undergo sex offender treatment, serve two years of supervised release after his release from prison and pay $250,000 to a crime victims’ fund.

Hastert admitted in a statement he “mistreated” some of his Yorkville High School athletes when he was a teacher and wrestling coach at the school between 1965 and 1981 when he left YHS to begin his political career. He told the judge and courtroom, “I wanted to apologize for the boys I mistreated when I was their coach. What I did was wrong, and I regret it. They looked to me, and I took advantage of them.”

Fortunately, Durkin did not let Hastert off with a blanket apology. The judge asked Hastert, point-blank, if he had sexually abused three wrestlers – including Scott Cross, the brother of one of his political protégés, former Illinois House Republican Leader Tom Cross and the late Stephen Reinboldt.

Hastert – after conferring with his lawyers – agreed to accept their statements accusing him of sexually abusing them.

We’re pleased Durkin refused to accept Hastert’s initial apology and instead pressed him to admit publicly to sexually abusing multiple victims. Hastert’s victims, their families and the public – whose trust he violated – needed to hear the former House Speaker confirm the heinous nature of his crimes. Hastert’s admission leaves no doubt – as stunning as it still may be to some of his local friends and ardent political supporters – that he was, in fact, a predatory criminal during his years as teacher and coach at Yorkville High School.

Sadly, the judge was limited to imposing a sentence on Hastert only related to the hush money case. The statute of limitations on his admitted sexual abuse of his students at Yorkville High School has long since expired. Within hours of Durkin handing down his sentence, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan called on state lawmakers to enact legislation eliminating the statute of limitations for child sex crimes. Passage of such legislation is long overdue and may provide some measure of consolation to Hastert’s victims and their families.

As for Hastert, his political legacy seemed assured when he left Congress in 2007. He had served as House Speaker longer than any other man and had secured millions of dollars in state and federal funding for numerous and much-needed public works projects throughout Kendall County during his nearly three-decade long political career. He had also retired from public office still enjoying the goodwill of many of his friends and long-time supporters – a rare achievement for a politician.

That goodwill has vanished over the past 11 months, and Hastert will most certainly be remembered first and foremost for committing and then covering up sexual abuse of students at Yorkville High School. That is how it should be.

Idealizing past a chancy business REFLECTIONS Roger Matile From what I’ve heard in the past, the right wing really, really likes Alexander Hamilton, the pride of the Federalists. Unlike, in their view, the squishy liberal musings of a dilettante like Thomas Jefferson, we would be better off hearing about the hard-headed fiscal conservatism espoused by Hamilton in those Advanced Placement history classes everyone was so exercised about last year.

Hamilton, after all, was a war hero, having served ably in the Continental Army, unlike Jefferson who spent the war as a politician.

And Hamilton, as the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, had put in place the important underpinnings of the nation’s financial system. Hamilton was considered so important to the nation’s financial history that his portrait was added to the $10 bill.

Which is perhaps an opening for me to comment on the recent suggestion by the feds, instigated by well-meaning folks across the country, to remove Hamilton from the $10 bill and replace him with a woman of note. I think getting a female on the nation’s official tender is a great idea, but the current plan to put her (whoever she turns out to be) in Hamilton’s place is being extremely unfair to Hamilton.

Rather, it would be a lot more fitting to remove the face of crotchety old Andrew Jackson from the $20 bill. To his credit, Jackson threatened to invade South Carolina and hang anyone who subscribed to the nullification movement during the crisis of 1832 – the precursor of the secessionists of the 1860s.

Since he’d hanged and shot a number of folks during his life, his threat was so credible the nullificationists folded like an old map. But Jackson also hated paper money so hotly that he threw the entire nation into depression in 1837 because of it. So having his face on any denomination of paper money is an insult to the old guy.

But I digress. The problem the right wing has is trying to pigeonhole the Founding Fathers into definitions they think fit today’s

political scene. The “liberal” Jefferson was in favor of much less government – in fact, hardly any government at all, which sounds more like the rants of Ted Cruz. Meanwhile, the “conservative” Hamilton and the Federalists were in favor of a strong central government and government regulation of large areas of national life. In fact, Hamilton precipitated the nation’s first tax rebellion, a situation that might have led to the breakup of the country before it got a good start.

Even before the Revolutionary War ended, groups of pioneers were crossing the Appalachian Mountains and settling in Kentucky and other western areas. As more of these pioneer farmers arrived, crop yields produced more grain than individual farm families could consume. Which, of course, was the idea.

But producing grain was one thing; getting it to market was something else. Roads of the era varied in quality from bad to appalling and even the most advanced areas of the country enjoyed only limited overland transportation.

Grain could be turned into meat by feeding it to animals, but the animals then had to be herded to market, a dangerous proposition in the 1790s.

But there was another option. Grain could be fermented and distilled into whiskey. Whiskey was portable and was a good seller. So the farmers of the West of that period – western Pennsylvania and Virginia – made lots of whiskey which was then sold to generate cash.

Enter Alexander Hamilton.

As Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton was interested in raising money so the Federalists could increase the size of the government and enhance government power. Looking for an easy way to raise cash fast, Hamilton decided in 1791 to tax whiskey.

As I noted, whiskey was overwhelmingly a product of the West. The pioneers moving ever farther west felt the government wasn’t giving them anything for their money. They were getting little protection from marauding Indians, the government was not building any roads or canals to help get their produce to market, and federal land sales favored speculators at the expense of farmers.

What is your real purpose of buying this property (at higher than appraised price, no less)? Who intends to build there? If not you, are you intending to resell the property to another party? Who is that party? What do you, or another party you’ve cut some deal with, such as the village of Oswego, want to build on that property? Why are you racing to demolish the nice home and historical urban barn, which the adjacent resident offered to buy from you to preserve it?

There are many more important questions, but it would be a good start to begin with truthful answers to those above. Oh, one other thing. We know that four of you seven board members are up for re-election in 2017. Would you do all of us voters a big favor, and not run? We already have enough public officials who waste our money.

We look forward to truthful answers to the above questions.

was already busy fighting Indians so it didn’t show up, but about 13,000 militia from Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland did march west in August of 1794 to put down the rebellion.

The militia did a lot of marching but virtually no fighting. The farmers pretty much caved in and decided they didn’t want to fight after all. In the meantime, Gen. Anthony Wayne defeated the combined Indian tribes in Ohio at the Battle of Fallen Timbers and so settled one of the pioneers’ main gripes. The leaders of the rebellion fled. Two were captured, tried for

treason and imprisoned, but were pardoned by President Washington. And the whiskey tax was never actually collected.

Hamilton came up with a variety of other taxes, from poll taxes to property taxes, which finally pumped money into the young government’s coffers.

It is true that the political party Jefferson formed was the ancestor of today’s Democrats, but Jefferson’s views cannot necessarily be equated with today’s party. Jefferson, as noted above, was for small, almost non-existent, government, contending money spent on most governmental functions

was a waste of resources. Instead, he favored relying on individual citizens.

That sounds a lot like the mantra chanted by today’s right wingers while Hamilton and the Federalists and their insistence on a strong central government – and the ability to tax to finance one – sound closer to what most think of as “tax and spend Democrats.”

The moral of this story is that idealizing the past is chancy business.

Far too often, it just doesn’t fit today’s preconceptions.

The Oswegoland Park District’s Recycled Fashion Show featured designs that were made of primarily recycled and repurposed materials. The winning designs can be seen at the Oswego Public Library’s downtown campus.

Guitarist Randy Walker will perform a free country and western music show at the Montgomery Village Hall, 200 N. River St., in downtown Montgomery next Tuesday, May 10.

Walker has been a favorite entertainer at past events in the village and will perform classic songs from Hank Williams, Buck Owens, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers and many more. The event is free and open to the general public.

The village’s monthly Senior Lunch and activity for people ages 55 and older will begin at 11 a.m. after the entertainment. There is a $4 cost for the lunch and pre-registration by May 3 is required.

The Oswegoland Park District hosted the first Project Greenway Recycled Fashion Show on April 22. This show featured designs that were made of primarily recycled and repurposed materials. Designers of all ages created Accessories or Runway Looks.

This year, the three judges were Patti Bridge, a fashion teacher at Oswego High School, Angela Sharbert, a fashion teacher at Oswego East High School, and Nicole Weiler, a college representative for FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. They critiqued all entries and community members attending the event had the opportunity to vote for the People’s Choice Accessory.

Shutout win for Panthers on Senior Night

The Oswego girls soccer team made a big night even bigger with an explosive Senior Night victory.

The Panthers (10-4-3 overall) posted a 6-0 shutout over Plainfield East on Tuesday to earn their 10th win of the season and remained undefeated in the Southwest Prairie Conference. The team also celebrated the careers of Jordyn Schoen, Hannah Caruso, Melissa Kasper and Erin Marchert on Senior Night.

“All of them have just worked so

hard to make an impact in this program,” Oswego coach Kelsey Champion said. “They are just hard workers and you really can’t ask for a better group of leaders. They just want to win and they know what it takes to win. They are just great kids, they really are.”

“I’ve played with all these girls since my very first club team, when I was 8 years old,” Caruso added. “It’s not emotional yet, but I love them.”

Even though it was Senior Night, sophomores Riley Parker and Kaylee Zimbelmann were responsible for four of the six goals after they each scored twice. Parker recorded the third and

fourth goals of the game that pushed Oswego ahead 4-0 at the half. Zimbelmann tallied both goals in the second half.

“Riley and Kaylee knew the goal was to get as many goals as possible, and they worked on doing that. It was awesome. You couldn’t have asked for any more from them,” Champion said.

Schoen scored Oswego’s first goal of the game, and junior Abbigail Grzetic scored the second goal of the contest.

The Panthers’ two goalkeepers, Megan Rasmussen (first half) and Madison Lockard (second half) each had two saves.

Notes: Oswego ended up 2-1-1 at

the Naperville Invite after defeating Neuqua Valley (2-1 last Thursday) and tying Lyons (1-1) on Saturday. Grzetic and Schoen had the goals against the Wildcats while Zimbelmann scored against the Lions.

On Monday, St. Charles East defeated Oswego, 5-2. Grzetic and Zimbelmann scored the goals against the Saints.

The Class 3A postseason begins on May 18 with No. 7 Oswego facing No. 10 Plainfield South. The winner will play the winner of No. 2 Naperville Central/ No. 15 Romeoville in the regional title game on May 20.

Wolves dip under .500 after tough conference series

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com The Oswego East baseball team tried, but Plainfield North was too tough for the Wolves in the three-game Southwest Prairie Conference series.

As a result, the Tigers swept the series, which ended on Monday.

In Game 1, Plainfield North won, 6-2, on April 26. That was followed with a 6-1 victory last Thursday in the second game and a 5-3 decision in the third game on Monday. As a result, the Wolves were 9-10 overall and 5-7 in the SPC entering the three-game series against Minooka.

“North is a great ball club. We knew they had good pitching talent and depth and that shows. I don’t think they’ve given up more than three runs in a game all season,” Oswego East Matt Engelhardt said. “We knew going into the series that we’d have to play our best ball to get a win. Offensively, we

turned up the speed on our machines and talked about our approach at the plate, and I felt we had pretty good atbats all series.

“At the end of the day, you’re never excited about a loss, but as a staff we were proud of the way the kids competed.”

In the first game, Oswego East finished with three hits from Dylan Jones, Vince Schwartz and Devin Geoffory, who had the lone RBI for the Wolves.

Plainfield North finished with nine hits.

In the second game, Jones led the Wolves with two of Oswego East’s five hits. The other hits were from Garrett Goetz, Jake Stock and Geoffory.

Goetz and Vince Schwartz had two hits each to pace the Wolves’ offense in the third game against Plainfield North while Sean Schumacher and Josh Litkenhus combined to allow just one run in four innings of relief work on the mound.

BRIEF Hunt for PrairieFest Medallion starts Friday; prize is $250

The Oswegoland Park District has announced that the annual communitywide hunt for the PrairieFest Medallion will begin on Friday, May 6.

The person who finds the medallion hidden somewhere in the community will win a $250 prize.

Starting on Friday, the park district will publish six weekly clues for those searching for the hidden medallion.

Clues will be listed on the PrairieFest Facebook page and prairiefest.com, posted at Oswegoland Park District facilities,

and announced on WSPY 107.1 at 1:20 pm. The winner will be the first person or team who brings the medallion to an Oswegoland Park District facility. The winning person or team must be able to identify the six secret locations of clues throughout the hunt in order to claim their prize.

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Everything was working for the Oswego softball team in Tuesday afternoon’s Southwest Prairie Conference matchup against Plainfield South.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard early to take a 7-0 lead over the visiting Cougars after two innings and cruised to an 8-1 victory. The win avenges a 7-1 loss to Plainfield South less than three weeks ago.

“We have confidence up in the box,” Oswego coach Amanda Stanton said. “Our hitting was great.

We got our bunts down, we moved our runners and thinking about base hits and getting base. Coming out with that mentality was definitely different than the last game against them.”

Oswego (8-9, 2-7 SPC) made contact against Plainfield South starter Katelyn Czoschke early, with Lexi Moky knocking out an RBI single with two outs to drive in Annie Scaramuzzi, who led off the game with a walk. Ashley McCance kept things going with her RBI double to left field, and Oswego jumped on the board, 2-0.

Oswego pitcher Jenna Veber, who allowed five hits and no earned runs in 5 innings of work, caught a pop up at the mound to end the second inning and leave two runners stranded. Czoschke walked her first two batters to start the bottom of the second, and Oswego took full advantage. Scaramuzzi moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Kayla Moky hit a two-run single to left field.

Plainfield South left the bases loaded in the third after scoring one run on a misplayed ball in the Panther infield, but the Cougars could not produce any more runs in the game.

Ally Miller opened the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run over the center field fence to complete the scoring. Scaramuzzi relieved Veber in the sixth and allowed one hit and one walk before she struck out the side to end the game.

“We’re seeing a lot more leadership and a lot more talk out on the field and the younger girls are comfortable now,” Oswego coach Amanda Stanton said.

“Everyone is meshing together, and that’s what we need.”

Plainfield Central 5, Oswego 2: Last Thursday, Oswego held a lead until the fifth inning when the Wildcats knocked out a three-run double en route to the win.

Oswego 6, Naperville North 5: On Monday, Oswego faced Naperville North in a rescheduled game and Scaramuzzi knocked in the game-winner for the Panthers.

The Oswego badminton team’s hopes for a seventh straight Southwest Prairie Conference title were dashed on Saturday, when the two-day tournament wrapped up at Plainfield Central.

Plainfield North’s score of 44 edged out the Panthers, who finished with a 42 and in second place out of seven teams.

“North placed in spots they needed to and things just weren’t clicking that day,” Oswego coach Scott Freischlag said. “It really came down to the last few matches, but Plainfield North has a great, solid team.”

Oswego East placed third with a 34, followed by Romeoville (31), Plainfield South (16), Plainfield East (3) and Plainfield Central (1).

“The expectation was to win conference, but we came up short,” Oswego East coach Marko Jurkovic said. “We had some opportunities to win some matches and improve our point totals, but we couldn’t close out a few key matches and ended up on the losing end. This has been as good as the conference has been during my time, with four teams in contention for the title on the last day of conference.”

Oswego senior Anne Jakubowski defeated Oswego East junior Annie Carmody for the No. 1 singles title. Carmody and junior Simi Sharma, however, won the No. 2 doubles title over the Panthers’ Katelyn Beamish/Jenna Metcalf.

Oswego’s No. 5 doubles duo of Lauren Arnold/Isabella Gugliotta won the top spot after beating their opponents from Plainfield North. Marliee Garrett/ Jacilyn Swanson, the Panthers’ No. 4 team, also won first place over their opponents from Romeoville.

Beamish also ended up winning the No. 9 singles title.

Metcalf at No. 4 singles placed second, as did Oswego’s Bri Ecton at No. 5 singles, Xanthe Deck at No. 6 for the Panthers. Jakubowski/Ecton also placed second at No. 1 doubles.

Oswego East saw the following place second – senior Amna Hoda/senior Amber Williams at No. 4 doubles, junior Gina Tito at No. 8 singles and senior Ibtesam Kamal at No. 3 singles.

Deck and Jesse Jakubowski went third for Oswego at No. 3 doubles, as did Hoda/Williams at No. 4 doubles and Tito/Kamal at No. 1 doubles.

Hoda also finished third at No. 7 singles, as did Jessie Jakubowski at No. 8 singles and Swanson at No. 10 singles.

Next up for Oswego and Oswego East is postseason action at the Joliet Central Sectional. The Wolves will play at Andrew while the Panthers will play at T.F. South.

TEAMS POST SOLID TIMES Panthers, Wolves pick up wins at pair of events over weekend

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com With the 16-team Red Ribbon Classic scheduled the next morning at Waubonsie Valley, Oswego’s Roger Wilcox Invite wasn’t as competitive as coach Jeff Edwards would like to see at Ken Pickerill Stadium.

But in the end, the Friday event proved to be the better day outside as many teams withdrew from the Red Ribbon halfway through due to cold, rainy and windy conditions.

Geneva (145 points) outlasted West Aurora (129), Oswego (117) and Oswego East (60), which put together a smaller lineup in order to double up at the Red Ribbon the next day. The Wolves scored 40 points to finish seventh at Waubonsie Valley last Saturday.

“We scored a lot of points and had some good competition,” Oswego coach Jeff Edwards said. “I wish we could get more teams, but lot of the local teams to go the Red Ribbon the next day.”

Oswego highlighted the day with a pair of top finishes in the 400-meter dash, which fell below the state-qualifying times needed later this month.

Steven Strange won the event in 49.55 and teammate Brian Jimenez clocked in at 49.76 to take second.

“To have two guys under 50 is pretty cool,” Edwards said.

Matt Schaschwary also had a big day in the pole vault, tying Geneva’s Zeke Buck at 13-1, and the duo tied again at the jump off at 13-7, which is a state-qualifying height. Buke cleared 14-1 to break the tie.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Jackson Simon, Owen Kelty, Collin Boone and David Gaytan turned in a top time of 8:12.93, and the 4x400-meter team finished first in 3:27.34 behind Jimenez, Luke Moran, Jacob Smutzer and Strange. Bennet Peterson won the 1,600 (4:30), Boone won the 800 (2:03) and Strange was second in the 200 (11.20).

Oswego will now enter the Bill Jackson Invite at Lockport for its final challenge before the Southwest Prairie Conference meet takes place at Oswego East.

For the Wolves, Devonte Weathersby won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.12 and Ivory Kelly-Martin was third in 11.48. Kelly-Martin took second in the 300 hurdles (42.30).

“The weather for the Roger Wilcox was nice and good to get a lot of kids to compete before conference and sectionals,” Kimpton said. “Saturday was pretty brutal. A lot of teams left early, but we stuck it out. We were just happy to get out of there with no injuries and running decent times.”

Oswego East will compete at Lisle’s annual Carlin Nalley Invite on Saturday before hosting conference for the first time in program history.
