Man accused of threatening massacre in trouble at jail

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com An Aurora man who allegedly threatened to commit a massacre last year, firing a rifle at Oswego police officers, has been charged for a second time in the past month with battering a sheriff’s deputy in the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

Taylor J. Cano, 26, has been in custody awaiting trial at the jail, following a brief hospital stay, since the incident that occurred Aug. 29, 2015, in front of a home where he was staying in the 100 block of Ashlawn Avenue, Oswego.

On Nov. 15 at approximately 6:10 p.m., sheriff’s deputies investigated a report of an aggravated battery at the jail, sheriff’s deputies said.

During the investigation, police allege Cano battered two corrections deputies while they tried to retrieve Cano’s food tray from his cell. Both

deputies were treated for cuts and bruises and released.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Cano with two counts of aggravated battery, both Class 2 felonies.

Cano also faces charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer at the jail from an incident Nov. 2, when Cano allegedly battered and tossed feces at a deputy.

Taylor J. In addition, Cano facCano es charges of possessing a weapon while in custody of the jail, when he was accused Jan. 30 of fabricating a stabbing instrument out of a toothbrush; the weapon was seized without incident, police reported.

From the 2015 incident, Cano faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a

weapon by a felon.

In the August 2015 incident, two Oswego police officers shot and wounded Cano on Ashlawn Avenue in the village’s Cedar Glen subdivision.

State’s Attorney Eric Weis determined the actions of the officers to be justified. During his investigation, Weis said that prior to the incident Cano had several conversations with KenCom (911) dispatchers concerning his intent to commit harm against other individuals that day.

Cano also told dispatchers he was armed and would harm those who would come to help him.

Cano was found unfit to stand trial last November, but was found fit to stand trial in September, following a stay in a downstate mental hospital, according to court records.

Cano is scheduled for a hearing Nov. 30 at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville in front of Judge Timothy McCann.

Montgomery to light Christmas tree Dec. 4 OSWEGO LEDGER Montgomery’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony will take place on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m. in front of the Village Hall at 200 N. River St. in Montgomery. This is a free event for the entire community and is hosted jointly by the village of Montgomery and the Greater Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce.

The event will kick off as students from local grade schools decorate the village Christmas tree with handmade ornaments, followed by the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus in fire trucks with sirens blaring. After the lighting

of the Christmas tree, children can visit Santa and take photos inside the Village Hall while everyone enjoys musical numbers performed by the students outside on the park district’s soundstage.

Free hot cocoa and cookies will be provided throughout the evening by the GMACC. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring your camera.

The Village Hall will once again host a Festival of Trees that will turn all three levels of the building into a winter wonderland. Area businesses participate by decorating Christmas trees for everyone to enjoy, and visitors of all ages are invited to vote for

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com An Oswegoland Park District plan to develop a dog park is on hold, Chad Feldotto, the agency’s senior park planner, told park board members last week.

Feldotto has been working with the Oswego Park and Recreation Foundation on the plan to develop the dog park on a 3.3-acre site within the seven acre Jaycee Park just west of Douglas Road near Saugatuck Road since mid-2014.

Feldotto said the planning was moving along well, but then ComEd objected to the park district using the site because it has an easement across the land for high-power lines.

“The project is now tabled. We have to find another location. It took us a long time to find this one, so right now it’s not off the table; it’s waiting for a better spot,” he said.

Grant Casleton, park district planning and development director, said when they first proposed this site the agency had been receiving requests for a dog park for at least 15 years, which averaged one to two requests per month during the summer.

This Jaycee Park site had two things going for it, Feldotto said. One was the 27-space parking lot and the other is more than three acres of land that were not in use. Space is also available for another 25-27 parking spaces, he said, noting that most other neighborhood parks this size have only 10-12 spaces.

Feldotto said the park district has a recreation lease agreement with ComEd for Waubonsie Trail that goes through the park.

“We own property north and south of the easement, but it’s the area where we have the Waubonsie Trail going through. We just asked for a variance to allow the dog park. But they would not allow us to put that through,” Feldotto said.

He noted they looked for a year before they decided on Jaycee Park and thought it would be excellent for the dog park.

“It’s disappointing because I worked on that project for two years,” he said.

The 7.1-acre Jaycee Park was developed in the late 1970s as a project of the Oswego Jaycees. It includes a handicapped accessible playground, picnic shelter, sandbox with backhoe digger, a baseball backstop, sitting area with benches, picnic tables and bike rack, and an open area for sports practice.

He said the portion of the site proposed for the dogs is covered with turf grass that has not been mowed for years because it was not needed for any recreation or other use. There are no native or unusual species of plants here, he added.

A slap on the wrist for meetings law violation Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis has given Oswego Township officials a collective slap on the wrist for violating the Illinois Open Meetings Act. As our news editor, Tony Scott, reported last week, Weis notified Township Supervisor Jim Detzler in a Nov. 8 letter that the township failed to properly post an agenda to a township board meeting held Sept. 13. The act requires the board and all local governing boards to publicly display their meeting agendas at the site of the meeting “not less than 48 hours in advance” of the meeting in question.

Weis, however, noted the township board has since taken steps to correct their violation of the law “by conducting separate meetings to allow for notice of the public of the meetings and items to be considered at the meeting. The public was in attendance and the action items were subsequently approved by the [township board] at these subsequent meetings.”

As a result of the board’s follow-up actions, Weis said, he has determined the board’s actions “mitigate any violations of the Open Meetings Act sufficient such that no further action is required by my office.”

Weis recommended Detzler, township trustees and the township clerk review the Open Meetings Act training that is required of all appointed and elected officials and available on the Illinois Attorney General’s website.

In addition, he strongly encouraged township officials to review with their attorney their procedures to prevent any future violations of the act.

Since 2012, state law has required all elected and appointed members of public bodies – including townships – that are subject to the Open Meetings Act to complete online training in the act no later than 90 days after taking

the oath of office. All local officials should welcome the requirement since the act is intended to promote transparency in government.

We believe Weis has done what he can to encourage township officials to comply with the act. Unfortunately, in situations like this where a clear violation of the act has occurred, we wish Weis could mandate that all of the officials involved successfully complete the Attorney General’s Open Meetings Act training a second time.

It’s evident that for Oswego Township officials their training in the act did not sink in the first time.

Our turkey day celebration older than the nation itself When President Franklin Roosevelt decided to move Thanksgiving from the last Thursday of November to the fourth Thursday, I’ll bet my dad was not pleased.

He probably wasn’t upset because he didn’t like Thanksgiving, of course, but rather because he well and truly disliked President Roosevelt, primarily because of the Agricultural Adjustment Act. In fact, he disliked the president so much that he almost always refused to carry a Roosevelt dime in his pocket, changing them for Mercury dimes as quickly as possible.

But despite the grumbling of one Illinois farmer, Roosevelt was well-liked enough to win four terms in office.

Even so, when Roosevelt announced during the Great Depression that henceforth Thanksgiving would be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November instead of the last, my dad wasn’t the only one upset. After all, it had been the nation’s first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, who declared in 1863 that a national holiday of Thanksgiving should be held on the last Thursday of November.

We all know the first Thanksgiving in the New World was cooked up by the Pilgrims following their first successful harvest in 1621. Unfortunately, like a lot of historical conventional wisdom, that’s really not true.

Actually, 38 extremely relieved Englishmen who had arrived on the shores of the new colony of Virginia in 1619 aboard the tiny, 35-foot-long ship Margaret thanked their lucky stars for their survival during a heartfelt Thanksgiving service on Nov. 30 of that year. They’d spent 75 days at sea, but agreed to wait four more days until

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile they arrived at their true destination, Berkley Hundred, a few miles up the James River to disembark and get to work helping create what eventually became the United States.

A year later, in the autumn of 1620, the Pilgrims, Puritans who fled what they believed to be thoroughly Godless societies in England and Holland, arrived in the New World hoping to settle in Virginia. Unfortunately, their navigation was a bit off, the weather was stormy, and the Mayflower and its 102 passengers struck land at Cape Cod, much farther north than planned.

That first winter was the last one for many Pilgrims. The ones who survived did so thanks mostly to the generosity of the local Native Americans – who, as yet, didn’t realize what these newcomers had in store for them. The survivors planted crops the next spring with the assistance of their neighbors, the Wampanoag Tribe under their leader Massasoit. In particular, the Indians taught the English how to guarantee a successful corn harvest by including a codfish in each hill as fertilizer.

After the successful harvest of 1621, Massachusetts Gov. William Bradford decreed a day of thanksgiving be set aside to thank God for their survival.

Bradford and the Pilgrims invited their Wampanoag benefactors, including Massasoit and 92 of his people to the meal, which included turkeys shot by the Pilgrims and food the English had raised, including popcorn.

The Pilgrims remained friendly with the Wampanoags while Massasoit and his eldest son, Wamsutta, lived. But following Wamsutta’s death, Massasoit’s other son, Metacomet, who had adopted the English name Philip, assumed leadership. Growing friction led to King Philip’s War, during which the Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive those first terrible years were virtually annihilated. It was the template for two and a half centuries of Native American subjugation and extermination to come as European settlers spread west to the Pacific Ocean.

Over the years that first Thanksgiving was remembered even though many of the reasons for it were conveniently forgotten. The Pilgrims’ descendants continued to celebrate Thanksgiving even after they had eradicated the Indians who had helped them so much. Thanksgiving remained a mostly New England holiday for the next 200 years, although it did gradually spread west.

During the depths of the Civil War in 1863, Lincoln proclaimed the first national day of Thanksgiving on the last Thursday in November. The president acted, at least in part, in response to Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, a popular women’s fashion magazine of the era. Hale started campaigning for a national Thanksgiving Day in 1846. By 1852 she had persuaded people to celebrate on the same date in 30 of the nation’s 32 states.

With President Lincoln’s help, the celebration became national – at least in the states still loyal to the Union.

Following the war, most states passed laws making the last Thursday in November an official Thanksgiving Day.

But then commercialization wandered into the picture. In 1939, as the nation started clawing its way out of the Great Depression, Federated Department Stores chief Fred Lazarus Jr. persuaded President Franklin Roosevelt that a longer Christmas shopping season would greatly help the flagging economy (not to mention Federated Department Stores’ bottom line).

So that year, Roosevelt proclaimed Thanksgiving would henceforth be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, thus adding another week to the Christmas shopping season during many years. Within a few years most states quit their grumbling and passed laws making November’s fourth Thursday Thanksgiving Day. Some confusion was inevitable. In a telegram to the president on Nov. 4, 1939, Leota and Helen, proprietors of The Alliance Restaurant in Alliance, Ohio, wrote: “Congratulations on your reelection. When shall we serve our Thanksgiving Turkey, 21st? Or 28th?”

Calendar makers were particularly hard-hit because they usually printed their calendars a couple years in advance. New York University complained the change would disrupt their annual Thanksgiving football game.

But Roosevelt prevailed and Thanksgiving is still the fourth Thursday of November. Given the current parochial partisan political wrangling, it wouldn’t be surprising if somebody didn’t suggest moving it back to the last Thursday just to spite a former Democratic President.

As we celebrated Veterans Day this month, my thoughts turned to Montgomery’s own military contributions, and particularly to the VFW post located on River Street right across from the Village Hall.

Like in most American towns, Montgomery’s residents have answered the call to serve their country in wartime. Some of our residents have made the ultimate sacrifice, while most have eventually returned home to their grateful families and friends.

At the end of October, I had the opportunity to speak briefly at the dedication of 17 grave markers for Civil War veterans who are buried in Riverside Cemetery in Montgomery.

One of the men who received a gravestone marker was Silas Gray, a nephew of Daniel Gray, the founder of Montgomery. Silas enlisted in the Union Army on April 15, 1861, just three days after the beginning of the Civil War. He served out his term with the 42nd Volunteer Infantry, then immediately enlisted in the 9th Illinois

VIEWS Matthew T. Brolley Calvary, where he served until the end of the war, a total of 4½ years. Upon his return home, he married, raised a family, and was active in the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Aurora, where Union veterans of the Civil War met to fellowship.

The GAR was the first military fraternal organization established to fill both a social and political function, similar to what the VFW is today.

It was started near here in Decatur, Illinois, in 1866 and grew to include hundreds of posts across the nation with almost half a million members.

The GAR helped make Memorial Day a national holiday, lobbied Congress to establish veterans’ pensions and was a strong political force until the last veteran of the Civil War died in 1956.

Q: What is the purpose of the VFW? A: The Veterans of Foreign Wars

(VFW) was originally organized by veterans of the Spanish-American War in 1899 and grew to encompass veterans of all foreign wars. The objects of the VFW are to speed rehabilitation of disabled and needy veterans, assist veterans’ widows and orphans, and advocate for compensation and benefits for veterans. Membership is open to any active or honorably discharged veteran who served in any foreign war.

Q: When did the VFW post start in Montgomery?

A: Montgomery Post 7452 of the Vet-

erans of Foreign Wars was started in May 1946 by a couple dozen men who had recently returned from serving in World War II. The first meetings were held in members’ homes or the school, but within a year the post was able to purchase land at 121 N. River St. Initially the post built a small cement block building, then expanded when they were able. Many veterans found that the fellowship of the VFW helped them transition back into civilian life as they were able to share their experi-

ences with other veterans.

From the beginning, the Montgomery VFW has been an active participant in the community in addition to providing services to veterans. Over the years, donations from the VFW helped to finance major equipment purchases for the village, the local fire department and the Nicolson School playground. The VFW parking lot was for many years the location of the summer carnival and home town days that grew into today’s Montgomery Fest.

In 2016 the Montgomery VFW celebrated their 70th anniversary. In recognition of the VFW’s many years of contributions to the community, retiring VFW post commander John Behnke was chosen as the Grand Marshal of the 2016 Montgomery Fest parade. I congratulate them on their many years of accomplishments and their significant contributions to our veterans and to our community.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Reject schools’ Plan B

To the Editor: The proposed boundary plan B in School District 308 will uproot 715 junior high students from their current schools, including special education students.

The student population is decreasing at every junior high affected each year after the 2017-18 school year. This is with the current feeders in place. Why move all of these students for a one-and-a-half-year bubble that will burst after 2018?

Junior high is a heart-wrenching age to uproot students. Each student’s stability in teachers, friends, coaches, dean’s assistants, school counselors, staff, school clubs and sport team bonds are a huge part of a their identity. Students suffer academically and mentally from a school move at this age. Anxiety and depression are common. Stability is the most valuable gift we can give our tweens.

Pressure to accept plan B has been strong from many avenues within these (boundary committee) meetings. Many districts grow. Pushing older subdivisions out of their schools for new developments is not right. Plan C is right and fair without personal agendas at play.

Lakewood Creek subdivision in Montgomery is our home. Lakewood subdi-

vision has moved between schools nine times. A Lakewood parent had a student moved to seven different schools. This is just one example of many.

A change is not due to geography.

Our students were bused eight miles to schools in the past. Removal of boundary islands was another selling point.

However the island is still on the map, with a catch. The only students cut out of Traughber.

Plan B would crumble our community.

Long-term families will leave the district and a revolving door of families will move in and out. No family wants to stay in a community with uncertainty for their children. I believe the district wants the best for all students. Plan B is not it.

Why skip the turkey?

To the Editor: President Obama is taking a break from Trump transition to pardon two turkeys.

Every one of us can exercise that presidential pardon power on Thanksgiving by giving thanks for health and happiness while skipping gratuitous violence.

The 235 million turkeys killed in the U.S. this year have nothing to be thankful for.

They are raised in crowded sheds filled with toxic fumes. At 16 weeks, slaughterhouse workers cut their throats and dump them in boiling water to remove their feathers. Consumers pay a heavy price, too. Turkey flesh is laced with cholesterol and saturated fats that elevate risk of chronic killer diseases. Package labels warn of food poisoning potential.

November 1961 Responding to complaints concerning dogs running at large in Oswego, village officials announced a village ordinance requiring dogs to be on leashes at all times while in public places would be strictly enforced.

Sgt. Page Bond of the Oswego Police Department was honored Nov. 16 at an awards dinner hosted by the Inspiring Women of Oswego, a committee of the Oswego Chamber of Commerce.

Each year the Chamber gives out awards to honor those who inspire others. Annual awards include Most Inspiring Man, Women and School District 308 Youth, a Heart of Gold Award and a Community Give Back Award. This year the committee added First Responders awards.

Bond was selected to receive the Police First Responder Award for her dedicated work in the administration of the Sex Offender Registration and Apprehension Team (SORAT).

In addition to her duties as a patrol sergeant, Bond is responsible for the monitoring of registered sex offenders in the village of Oswego.

Although Illinois laws govern the registration and monitoring of sex offenders, Bond has developed the Oswego Police SORAT into a comprehensive program that goes beyond what the law requires of sex offender monitoring in efforts towards keeping the children and citizens of Oswego safe.

a community notification program in which nearby residents are notified when new sex offenders move into their neighborhood.

Bond is most tenacious in her investigations of sex offenders who are not registered to reside within the village of Oswego. When information is obtained that a subject may be living in the village without registering, she directs her team to thoroughly investigate the situation and, if able to establish a violation occurred, criminally charge the noncompliant sex offender.

Since Bond has been in charge of the SORAT program, new statutes have been passed that now require a similar registry for those convicted of murder and other violent acts against youth. Bond has applied the same principles of the SORAT program towards the monitoring and registration of these individuals as well.

“Bond has shown great leadership for the SORAT team and the Oswego community should feel confident in knowing that registered sex offenders and other required registrants are being monitored by the Oswego Police Department, often above and beyond the minimum requirements of the laws that govern them,” said a news release from the Oswego Police Department.

Bond started her career with the Oswego Police Department in 1998, after previously working at another police department.

During her employment with the Oswego Police Department, she has served as a patrol officer, school resource officer and detective, and in 2009 was promoted to sergeant.

ON CAMPUS Bob Tyioran of Oswego completed the requirements for a Certificate in Paralegal Studies (Basic Vocational Specialist in Paralegal) with high honors on Aug. 11. Entry into the program requires a bachelor’s degree including completion of a business law course.

The 24-semester-hour curriculum is comprised of four required courses and four elective courses, all of which are taught by attorneys. The paralegal program, which is accredited and approved by the American Bar Association, is offered through Elgin Community College.

Lea Ann Koch of Oswego captured the world championship title in amateur two-year-old stallions at the 2016 Lucas Oil American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show on Nov. 16 in Oklahoma City.

Koch showed her American Quarter Horse I Am Relentless. The 2014 chestnut stallion, sired by Sirprizerized and out of Best To Be Me, was bred by Vernon Habighorst of Phoenix, Arizona.

In amateur two-year-old stallions, six entries competed for world champion honors and a purse of $1,225. World champions received a prize package that included a custom-designed gold trophy, courtesy of the Lucas Oil World; Montana Silversmiths buckle; specially designed logoed jacket and world champion patch, courtesy of

Cripple Creek Outerwear; neck wreath; and 100 pounds of Nutrena feed.

The Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show is the pinnacle event for American Quarter Horse owners and exhibitors around the world, who must qualify for the event by earning a predetermined number of points to compete in each of the classes representing halter, English and western disciplines.

More than 4,900 entries from the United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa and the United Kingdom competed for 99 world championships and 83 Adequan (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan) Level 2 championship titles at this year’s event at State Fair Park.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Gas pump damaged A motorist drove off from a gas pump at a gas station in the 2500 block of Light Road in Oswego Township with the gas hose still connected to the vehicle Nov. 15 at 2:48 p.m., according to county sheriff’s deputies. Police said an estimated $800 in damage was done to the pump. The incident is under investigation, according to police.

Brake line cut A Boulder Hill resident told county sheriff’s deputies Nov. 15 that someone had cut the brake line to his vehicle. No other damage to the vehicle was found, police said.

Runaway located Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a 14-year-old runaway in the 0-40 block of Afton Road in Boulder Hill Nov. 20 at 12:56 a.m. Police said they located the teen at 1:01 a.m. near Long Beach Elementary School on Long Beach Road, also in Boulder Hill. The teen was referred to the juvenile court system, police said.

Warrant arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Rogelio Diaz-Gomez, 38, of the 700 block of Delius Street, Aurora, after stopping his vehicle for a speeding violation on Route 71 at Ottawa Street in Newark in Big Grove Township Nov. 19 at 8:52 p.m. Police said Diaz-Gomez was wanted on a Kane County warrant for a prior contempt of court charge. He was transported to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

for families in need during the holiday season.

The fire district, the junior highs and the Marine Corps collect the toys and the Oswegoland Optimist Club distributes the toys just before Christmas.

But for a program that hasn’t had a winning season in six years, head coach Steve Szymanski is happy to let the Wolves fly under the radar.

“A lot of people are putting high expectations on us,” Szymanski said.

“We have potential to be really good, but our first four games will be really tough.”

Oswego East returns three key contributors from this year’s squad that finished with a 13-15 overall record with seniors Stephon Harris, Tahj

Oliver and Kijana Caldwell. Harris earned Southwest Prairie All-Conference honors, averaging 15.1 points and led the team with 259 rebounds and 37 blocked shots.

“This is a really good group. I like it,” Harris said. “We’ve got quicker guys on the court and we’re taller and lankier so our defense should be good.”

Seniors Derek Dorsey, Elijah James and DJ Thurman are also expected to be big role players for the Wolves. Junior AJ Hughes joins the program from a successful sophomore team that won 25 games last winter and will take on the role of point guard for the Wolves, while junior Trent Taylor will give Oswego East some depth in the post.

“Last year I don’t feel like we had a true point guard, but this year with

AJ, he’s providing a lot of that,” Dorsey said. “He’s very unselfish and he’s a big key for our team this year.”

“We’re communicating a lot better and focusing in practice. So far, practice have been really good, intense and fast-paced,” Dorsey added.

Oswego East’s schedule has a few amendments, replacing the canceled Romeoville Christmas Tournament with the East Aurora Holiday Tournament Dec. 26-29.

Other non-conference games include Downers Grove North, the Ernie Kivisto Shootout at East Aurora and Downers Grove South.

The SPC schedule also changes with the addition of Joliet West and Joliet Central. Oswego East will play each of the nine member schools once, and will double up five others to make up a 14game conference schedule. The Wolves face Romeoville, Plainfield South, Jo-

liet Central, Plainfield Central and Plainfield East twice. The only meeting with crosstown rival Oswego takes place on Feb. 10.

Oswego East opens the season with the four-game Hoops for Healing tournament, facing West Aurora, Hinsdale Central and Naperville North before crossover play on Friday.

“The first tournament is going to be a test, and our first non-conference game after that is Glenbard East, so our first five games could be our toughest games of the year,” Szymanski said.

“Joliet West will be our toughest conference game.”

West Aurora 71, Oswego East 38: The Wolves opened the season Monday against the Blackhawks and never recovered after trailing 15-4 in the opening period. Harris led Oswego East with 10 points and six rebounds while Hughes knocked in eight points.

Jaylen Jones knows a thing or two about perseverance.

The Oswego four-year returning varsity basketball player missed a significant amount of his sophomore season after breaking his hand in January, and missed seven games last year with a broken thumb.

“We need him to avoid the injury bug. That’s going to be a big key,” Oswego coach Matt Borrowman said. “He’s been healthy all summer, and he’s had a tremendous fall. His strength is probably his greatest improvement. He will be one of the strongest kids on the court, pound for pound, every single night. He knows our system as well as our coaching staff does and he’s going to be a coach on the floor. Jaylen finally gets everything that we’re preaching and he’s 100 percent bought in. We’ve given him control when he’s the court; it’s his team.”

Senior Eli Winston will also be relied on heavily after being called up as a freshman three years ago, in addition to senior Elliott Pipkin, who saw some playing time last year.

“We don’t take too much stock in wins and losses early on. We just want to make sure we’re playing better every day, we’re getting experience, and our big mantra in the program is to play your best in March,” Borrowman said.

“We care [more] about March hardware than regular season success.”

Naperville Central 50, Oswego 40: The Panthers struggled from the field in Monday’s season opener, shooting just 11 percent in the first half to fall behind 19-8 at halftime. Winston had the only two field goals of the first half and Oswego shot 4-for-10 at the foul line.

In the second half, Naperville Central’s Nick Kramer put up a pair of three-point baskets to extend the Redhawks’ lead, 29-10, before Oswego started to chip away at its deficit. Winston (18 points, 7 rebounds) scored four more points in the third quarter before Oswego cut its deficit to single digits in the final two minutes of the game.

“We were just nervous. Our kids were jittery and we showed our youth and inexperience, and I think even our seniors struggled out of the gate,” Borrowman said. “We got to halftime and made some adjustments, but we put ourselves in a hole that we couldn’t get out of. Shooting 20 percent for the game isn’t going to win you ball games.”

Georgia White makes history with 2 state titles Local co-op team brings home 3rd-place trophy

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Oswego junior Georgia White and the Oswego-Oswego East co-op swim team made history on Saturday at the IHSA state finals in Evanston.

White became a two-time state champion – the first champion in the history of the girls’ swim program – as well as a state record holder and was part of two All-State relays to help Oswego capture third place. That is the first state trophy for the program.

“The whole season we had a goal to get a trophy for state,” White said. “We had a lot of confidence in our training, and we ended up accomplishing that goal. We were very, very thrilled and pleased with how it ended.”

Rosary captured the state championship with 185.5 points while Loyola was second at 131 points and Oswego totaled

120 points to finish 17 points ahead of Oak Park for the third-place trophy.

“This was our goal. This is what we thought we could do when last season ended and we looked at who we had coming back and who was coming in as freshmen,” Oswego coach Deryl Leuber said. “We knew we’d have enough points to score 100 to 120 points, and typically that’s in the running for third place.”

White was seeded third in the 200 free and in the top 10 for the 100 free heading into state. Instead, she posted the top preliminary times in both events on Friday. White’s first swim of the day came with the 200-meter freestyle, and although she was not in the fastest heat, she touched the wall in 1:46.69 to set a state record in the event and win her preliminary heat.

“To be honest, I was hoping to accomplish more in the 100 than I was in the 200,” White said. “It was a great surprise to have gotten the record in the 200. ... Usually I’m very nervous for a meet, but I was feeling really good that afternoon before my event. When I dove

into my 200, I started pulling away from the other girls and I felt really good.

That helped set the tone for how the rest of the day was going to go.”

After securing all four events in Saturday’s finals, White had added pressure to live up to her two preliminary wins. She withstood the emotions of the day and raced to a first-place win in the 200 free to become the first individual state champion in the girls’ swim program, clocking in at 1:47.03. Loyola’s Ella Tierney trailed by two-tenths of a second at 1:47.24.

In the 100 free finals, White had a slightly larger margin of victory and captured her second state championship with a winning time of 50.13 seconds. In all, White went home with four state medals.

Three others received state medals on Saturday. Junior Mari Kraus placed third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.64 while freshman Grace Cooper sprinted to a fourth-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 23.62 seconds. Cooper was the only freshman in the event to reach Saturday’s finals.

Senior Alyssa Shugarman reached the 500 free finals and raced to a sixthplace finish in the event with her time of 5:01.36. She previously set a school record in the prelims at 4:56.61.

The 200 medley relay team of sophomore Emily Giles, Shugarman, sophomore Riley Evans and Cooper clocked in at 1:46.03 to place eighth overall in the consolation finals. The 200 free relay clocked in at 1:35.03 to place fourth overall behind the efforts of Cooper, Kraus, White and Shugarman after winning its prelim heat.

Finally, the 400 free relay team of Cooper, Giles, Kraus and White capped the day with a third-place finish with a time of 3:27.09 after winning its prelim heat.

“Georgia really put us on her back on Saturday. We had probably the best Friday that we could have,” Leubner said. “On Saturday, about halfway through the meet we started to get tight. The pressure started weighing on us and the swims started piling up.

In the 400 relay, Georgia just carried us home.”
