Effort targets empty site ‘Deck stacked against’ Oswego on vacant Dominick’s

By ERIKA WURST news@kendallcountynow.com It’s been three years since the Dominick’s grocery store closed its doors on Route 34 in Oswego, and the village’s push to fill the vacant lot is only getting stronger.

At a village board meeting Sept. 19, Village Administrator Daniel DiSanto said village residents should soon be hearing a lot more about Oswego’s intent to see the site filled.

“You may be hearing about the village, along with a coalition of other communities who are suffering with vacant Dominick’s stores, calling attention to the leases still being paid by Jewel (Osco’s) parent company, Albertsons,” DiSanto said.

Albertsons has taken over lease payments on the vacant building, and could do so until 2021 when the building’s lease expires, DiSanto said. Even then, there’s the option of a five-year lease extension.

“They’re content on (paying) to keep competition out of the communities,” he added.

But, the village, and other towns suffering from similar issues brought on by the Dominick’s demise are less than happy to see this occur.

“A number of mayors are getting together to call attention to this issue and draw attention to vacancies in the area,” DiSanto said. “This is something we take very seriously and we’ve been

The task of filling the space is already hard enough without Albertsons paying the lease, DiSanto said.

He noted that the 17 other businesses located in the vacant lot’s vicinity must all agree on the lot’s new tenant.

“Seventeen other business have to agree on the new tenant,” DiSanto said.

“The deck is stacked against us at this point. We think bringing attention to

this publicly will help.”

Board member Luis Perez commended village staff’s efforts in continuing to attempt to fill the vacant property.

“You will be doing a good thing for the citizens of Oswego as you continue to push this conversation forward,” he said. “There’s something unusual going on that’s anti-retail. The town of Oswego deserves better than that. You have my full support as we move forward.”

BRIEF Montgomery’s annual River Run 5K/10K this Saturday

The Village of Montgomery will host its 13th annual 5K and 10K River Run this Saturday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. Everyone is invited to participate. New to the race this year will be chip timing. The race will start and finish at Village Hall at 200 North River Street in the village’s downtown. Race day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.

The race takes place on both sides of the Fox River through parks and residential areas. Awards will be presented inside Village Hall in the Board Room around 10:30 a.m. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Montgomery VFW Post 7452 and to the Montgomery Foundation.

CIVIC MEETINGS Man falls out of hotel window; police say alcohol suspected

Oswego police responded early Saturday morning to a man who had fallen out of a hotel window.

Police reported that Saturday at approximately 6:17 a.m. they responded to a hotel in the 1000 block of Douglas Road for a report of a man asking for help.

Responding officers found a man on a sidewalk beneath an open window. The man was conscious and police learned that the man was a guest of the hotel and had fallen out of a third-floor window, police said.

During the investigation, it was learned that alcohol may have been involved, however no information was ascertained that a crime occurred, police said.

The man was transported to a local hospital for his injuries.

Village of Montgomery officials are accusing the owner of this home of renting out rooms in violation of village ordinances.

“The tenant asserted that in addition to himself, there were three other individuals renting rooms at the subject property,” the lawsuit states.

According to the lawsuit, Boyd was placed on court supervision and directed “among other things, that the ‘property shall be used exclusively as a single-family residence in compliance with applicable zoning and permits.’”

The lawsuit said Boyd signed the court order and pleaded guilty.

The lawsuit states that on May 29, 2014, village attorneys sent Boyd’s attorney a letter that said it had “come to the village’s attention that Boyd continued to rent out the rooms at the subject property,” in violation of the court order. In April of 2015, Boyd’s court supervision was suspended and a finding of guilty was entered in part because she continued to advertise rooms for rent in violation of the court order, according to the lawsuit.

Boyd continues to rent rooms and the village’s police department and Department of Community Development “continue to receive complaints from neighbors and former tenants of the property regarding this practice,” the lawsuit states.

The village’s lawsuit states that without the protection of a court injunction, the village will “suffer irreparable harm” and that village officials will “either be required to allow such continuing violations to occur or expend an extraordinary number of personnel hours issuing citations.” Over the last three years, the lawsuit states

that there have been approximately 60 visits by code enforcement officials to the property.

Boyd has “demonstrated her flagrant disregard for the village’s ordinances, as was demonstrated by her failure to comply with her court-ordered supervision, as well as the numerous verbal and written citations that she has received,” the lawsuit states.

A meeting on the case has been set with Judge Robert Pilmer for Nov. 7.

In response to the allegations contained in the lawsuit, Boyd said she is planning on countersuing the village.

She said village officials “have been blatantly harassing” her over the past three years.

“They keep thinking that I’m doing things that I’m not,” Boyd said. “I have a large family that lives with me.”

Boyd said village officials have contacted her subdivision’s homeowner’s association “trying to get any violation they possibly can.” She said she has successfully fought tickets that have been written against her by the village.

“I have gone and won in open court against a number tickets that they’ve given me,” she said. “The chief of police, the police officers, and the village of Montgomery, the board of the association have told me they feel that I’m a menace to society so they’re gonna do whatever they can to charge me money to get me to move out of Montgomery.”

A Montgomery woman is accused of running an illegal boarding house out of her single-family home in the Blackberry Crossing West subdivision, according to a lawsuit the village of Montgomery filed against her in Kendall County court.

The lawsuit accuses Catherine L. Boyd of running her home at 2328 Thunder Gulch Road as a “boarding house facility from said property in violation of the village’s zoning code, as well as the village’s code of ordinances.”

“Boyd consistently rents out rooms in the home and receives rental payments as compensation for the same, and advertises rooms within the property for rent on websites such as Facebook and Craigslist and upon unpermitted signs within the village’s right-of-way,” the village’s complaint states.

The lawsuit seeks a court order that directs Boyd to “cease and desist renting out rooms at the property.”

The lawsuit states that each of the rooms rented to tenants has a lock keyed from the outside, using different keys. It states that Boyd cooks and serves food to tenants residing in the home.

The complaint states that the rental of those rooms violates the village’s R-2 residential zoning, which is meant for single-family use only.

“Boyd maintains separate kitchen facilities in the home’s basement area, including several refrigerators, a stove, a microwave, and numbered cabinets to correspond to the rented rooms,” the lawsuit states. “Separate bathroom facilities are also located in the basement area.”

The lawsuit states that Boyd continues to rent out rooms in the house despite having been cited by the village’s code enforcement officer.

The lawsuit goes on to say that in April of 2014, Montgomery police were called to the house in response to a verbal argument between Boyd and “an individual identified as a tenant of the property.”

Boyd was also ordered to pay $873.41 to her subdivision’s homeowner’s association after the organization filed suit against her in 2015.

This past February, Boyd was arrested and charged with felony unlawful restraint. That case is still pending, according to court records.

In 2014, Boyd was found not guilty of unlawful operation of a child care center, according to court records. However, Boyd said the village “shut my day care down.”

“Well, I can’t afford my mortgage on my own; I’m a single mom,” she said.

“So I’ve had friends or family stay with me to help me pay my mortgage.”

Boyd said her boyfriend and his family have moved into the home, along with her ex-father-in-law.

“Yes, I have a couple people who live with me here; they’re not my blood relatives, I understand that,” she said.

“But they’re still my family. And they don’t like it because my fiancé is a little bit of a hillbilly, his brother is even more redneck than him. They like to drink on the front porch and hang out and get a little loud sometimes.”

She continued, “We do have parties in the backyard. We have big huge parties, because I’m a party planner.

So I have my friends’ parties here. My girlfriend’s baby shower was here, I’ve had a wedding here before, my son’s birthday party was here a couple weeks ago. So, yes, I have company, I have friends, I live in my home.

They don’t like this. My neighbors next door hate me because I have dogs. They don’t like the dogs. They’ve literally come over and asked me, ‘Can you get rid of your dogs please because we’re afraid of them.’ I’m sorry, my dogs are like my children. I’m not going to just get rid of them because the neighbors next door decide that they don’t like dogs. That’s really unfair.”

Boyd said her neighbors frequently call the police for noise issues at her house.

“The neighbors all around here hate me because the cops are constantly at my house, for this stupid crap,” she said.

Wolves or Panthers? We like ’em both Are you orange and blue or blue and silver? That’s the burning question this week in School District 308 as the Oswego High School Panthers and Oswego East High School Wolves prepare to square off in what promises to be one of the more exciting football games ever held in this vicinity tomorrow evening at OEHS.

For years up until the late 1960s, Yorkville High School was Oswego High School’s chief rival when it came to football and other athletic events.

Then, as OHS grew and changed conferences, rivalries intensified with Plainfield and Morris, a perennial football power. Now, however, a new rivalry has developed between OHS

and its in-district neighbor, OEHS. Rivalries, especially in prep sports, can be good because they tend to bring out the very best in athletes, helps foster school pride for students and can be fun for the fans.

The big question for Friday night is can the rising Wolves finally beat the entrenched Panthers? As for us, we’re

not going to take sides here – we cover and root for them both – but we’re sure allegiances are evenly split within School District 308, as it should be.

We will say this: Go Wolves, Go Panthers! Or is that Go Panthers, Go Wolves!? Either way the School District 308 community and its athletes and fans are the winners.

Stay interested through next April’s election The nation has yet to get through the fall election, but our readers may have noticed in our pages over the past few weeks notices about another election on our collective horizon: the April 4, 2017 local election.

Effective Sept. 20, candidates interested in seeking election to local municipal, school, township and elective park and library district boards can now circulate petitions to have their names placed as candidates on local ballots next spring. The filing period for candidate petitions will be Dec. 12-16 at the appropriate local governmental office.

While the November election is certainly critical to the future of our nation, our national security and the State of Illinois, next April’s balloting will

be critical to Kendall County, its communities and residents. The candidates who file petitions in December and gain election in April will join those who will set policies that will shape local communities in the coming years while approving budgets that affect your annual property tax bill.

Based on historic voter turnout data here in the county, however, far, far fewer ballots will be cast next spring as compared to this November. For example, in the November 2012 presidential election just over 69 percent of all of the county’s registered voters cast ballots, but in the local election the following April just 11.5 percent participated.

The Nov. 8 election is important to our nation and the state, but given the concerns we hear over

and over from residents about taxes, schools, highways and other local issues we would hope more people will choose to maintain their interest in electoral politics beyond this fall’s voting. Better yet, we would encourage those with the time and the desire to serve their communities to consider running for one of the many local elective offices next spring.

There is no financial reward for serving on your local school, park or library board. And most of those who serve on a city council or village board receive a comparatively modest compensation for their efforts. But the rewards for holding a local office come in the form of having a direct say over policy, budget decisions and ultimately a real impact on the community served.

Not just marketing: 6 flags really have flown over Ill. Kids of all ages have been having exciting times at Six Flags Great America ever since the place opened up in Gurnee back in the Bicentennial year of 1976.

Amusement parks and I don’t get along, so I’ve never been there, but both my kids made it there several times during their teenage years. But I imagine neither they, nor the hordes of other visitors, ever thought about that “Six Flags” in the park’s name.

Turns out, while the name originated with the park’s current corporate owners down in Texas, it’s not just a marketing ploy. Six flags really have flown over northern Illinois during the past 300-plus years.

Drive or walk around anywhere in the Fox Valley, and you’ll see many a flagpole with the U.S. Flag proudly waving in the breeze on crisp autumn days in front of homes and public building in the area. But the Stars and Stripes is only the last in a long line of banners to fly over the region between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River.

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile If the Native People living here had had a flag, they would have had it proudly flying in front of their public buildings when Marquette and Jolliet arrived in the area in 1673.

Alas, the members of the Illiniwek Tribe had no flags and no comprehension of what was about to befall them as the first Europeans pushed into Illinois with imperialism on their minds.

The first white man to bring a flag with him was Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle. La Salle tried to colonize the area in 1679. But due to a series of mishaps, including the loss of his ship, the Griffin, on Lake Michigan causing a catastrophic cash flow problem, he was forced to regroup and try again a few years later.

In 1683, he finally succeeded in journeying all the way down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico, and

immediately claimed the entire Mississippi watershed for France, to the bemusement of the Native People who had lived there for thousands of years.

Returning upriver, La Salle and his faithful Italian companion Henri de Tonti paddled up the Illinois River and established the first permanent French fort in Illinois atop Starved Rock. Thus, the flag of France became the first banner to float over Illinois and the Fox Valley.

Although the French claimed Illinois, it wasn’t for long, managing to hold on to it for only 80 years.

Illinois was a rich country, and both the French and their enemies in North America, the British, wanted control of it.

After several colonial wars between the French and their Indian allies on one side and the British on the other, the British finally prevailed during the Seven Years War. In 1763, Illinois was ceded to the British.

Though the French gave Illinois to the British, the area’s Indian inhabitants decided they didn’t want

to be given away, and proceeded to ­slaughter every Brit they could find.

The war, called Pontiac’s Rebellion, was quashed by a Swiss colonel fighting for the Brits.

Finally, in 1765, soldiers of the famed 42nd (Black Watch) Regiment were finally able to march into Fort de Chartres in southern Illinois and raise the Union Jack. Thus flag number two.

The British held on to Illinois for even less time than did the French.

George Rogers Clark, at the head of about 170 Virginia militia, marched west under orders from Gov. Patrick Henry and took the Illinois Country for the state of Virginia during the Revolutionary War on July 4, 1778.

Thus we became Illinois County of the state of Virginia. Flag number three.

Clark was able to withstand the continued assaults of the British largely due to the assistance of the Spanish, who at that time controlled the lands

To the Editor: As the Chairman of the Kendall County Republican Central Committee, I received a letter from George Hettrich the Oswego Township Clerk regarding the availability of the packets for candidates nominating petitions to file as Independents in the upcoming township election.

In an effort to understand the options with regards to anyone wishing to run as an established party candidate, I have subsequently spoken with George about the township process and format. I also spoke with Tina Touchette, Oswego Village Clerk, and Debbie Gillette, Kendall County Clerk, and with the Illinois State Board of Elections regarding elections in Oswego Township and the Village of Oswego. One of those persons I spoke with was Ken Menzel, the General Counsel to the Illinois State Board of Elections. All of the clerks and the State Board of Elections were very helpful in answering my queries.

I will summarize the net result of the multiple conversations and the reading of relevant publications to the best of my understanding with regard to established party candidate’s options to be on the ballot for the general consolidated election.

I am not an attorney; I would suggest consulting with an election attorney for legal advice regarding this matter.

Ken Menzel (General counsel) said “Township Elections are the Partisan Format, therefore establish political parties have the right to participate as such.” Tina Touchette said the village of Oswego is running the “Partisan Format,” this was

the result of the court ruling in the prior election cycle.

The period to begin circulating established party petitions began on Aug. 30.

The number of signatures required is significantly less than filing as an Independent candidate. The statutory minimum signatures required according to the General Counsel is 25, however the calculation of the required number is according to statute and depends on the jurisdictions number of ballots cast in the previous election. I will leave that calculation to the respective clerks to determine. Personally, I would gather twice the number to be on the safe side. The filing period for established party candidates is Nov. 21-28.

There is one caveat to all this, the established political parties, have the option to hold a caucus. Which would be held for Oswego Township on Dec. 6 and in the event of the Village of Oswego elections, possibly Dec. 7, due to involving multiple townships.

I have developed relationships with the other government agencies in the area and have worked with the Village of Oswego to create an intergovernmental agreement on the sharing of roads to help save taxpayer money.

Business incentives instead?

To the Editor: After reading the recent Oswego Ledger article regarding the purchase by the Oswego Public Library District of the parcel of land on Route 25 (North Street), I became a bit irritated. It appears to me that over the last (plus or minus) 20 years the library district and the park district have an open and unlimited checkbook. I agree that biking trails and hiking trails and little parks are wonderful things, but they have one thing in common: they cost money without generating income. I don’t mean to denigrate the nostalgic purpose of the public library, but let’s be honest, Amazon and Google have kind of taken over the market.

The question should be: What would make Oswego a destination for the locals and out-of-towners? Without trying to oversimplify, we need some good restaurants. Naperville, Batavia, Geneva and even Yorkville have been able to accomplish the task. For the most part Oswego has nothing but chains and fast food places.

In summary, why not offer financial incentives to businesses instead of giving carte blanche to the library district and park district?

Traffic, parking reminder issued for crosstown game Shuttles to operate from remote lots to OEHS OSWEGO LEDGER The Oswego Police Department is providing information on parking locations, alternative transportation and travel routes for the cross town football game on Sept. 30 between Oswego East and Oswego high schools at Oswego East.

Parking will be available in the paved parking lots of Oswego East High School and the grass lot east of the school until they are full. Entrance into the event will only be permitted from the entrance off of Wolf’s Crossing Road. Signage on Wolf’s Crossing will inform the public when the lots are full.

Remote parking locations and shuttles will be available at Oswego High School, Bednarcik Junior High School and Plank Junior High School parking lots. Expanded handicapped parking will be available in the lot of OEHS. School District 308 will provide bus transportation from remote parking

But Spain, like France and England, also had men willing to spend the time and effort to try to become heroes.

Therefore, on two different occasions between 1779 and 1783, small Spanish forces crossed the Mississippi from St. Louis and marched north to try to capture the Illinois country for Spain.

One of these small, quixotic groups even managed to reach Fort St. Joseph on the St. Joseph River over in Indiana, capture the place, and raise the flag of Imperial Spain.

Although this unlikely development is little more than a footnote in history – Spain never really tried to capitalize on it – it does add another flag that has flown over Illinois. Flag number four.

The Revolutionary War caused a lot of confusion here in Illinois. No one, not even George Rogers Clark, knew who was really in charge. Was it Clark, the military commander? Or was it the official government representative sent out from Williamsburg?

The confusion eventually led to no order at all, and Illinois became the truly wild frontier.

Fans are asked to remain patient as the lots are expected to take longer than normal to clear.

Assembly sensibly decided to wash their hands of the whole problem, quickly signing the Illinois country over to the federal government soon after the war officially ended. So the United States flag flew, at last, over what would one day be the state of Illinois. Flag number five.

Although England ceded Illinois to the United States via the Treaty of Paris at the end of the Revolution, the Indians living in the area decided, like their counterparts in 1763, they didn’t want to be ceded.

A series of embarrassing Indian wars resulted and the United States was actually forced to call back to service soldiers who knew something about fighting a war, political General Arthur St. Clair having lost an entire army somewhere between Ohio and Illinois. Battles at Fallen Timbers (Gen. “Mad Anthony” Wayne) and Tippecanoe (Gen. William Henry Harrison) finally eliminated the Indian threat on the frontier, though the War of 1812 resulted in the British flag again briefly flying over northern Illinois.

But then, with statehood in 1818 came the sixth and final flag to fly over the Fox Valley, the Illinois state flag. And here we are today.

OSWEGO LEDGER A Boulder Hill man is facing additional charges related to an incident in August where he was arrested and charged with gun crimes and assault.

Kendall County Sheriff’s deputies met with a woman on Aug. 19 at approximately 1:56 a.m. who told them she was involved in a disturbance at a residence in the 0-40 block of Wyndham Drive in Boulder Hill.

“The complainant alleged that a male subject had displayed a handgun, fired a round into the air, and pointed a gun at the complainant while running at her,” Sheriff’s police reported.

“Deputies responded to the residence to investigate the complaint. Deputies recovered a firearm from the residence that had been reported as stolen.”

Christopher Garcia, 28, of Boulder

Hill was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a weapon without a FOID card, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Sheriff’s deputies continued an investigation into the matter, and received additional Christopher information about the incident from residents Garcia in the area, police said.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office on Sept. 12 additionally charged Garcia with unlawful possession of ammunition by a felon, a class 3 felony, and reckless discharge of a firearm, a class 4 felony. Garcia remains in custody at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville, police said.

Oswego Cemetery Walk set for next Thursday

The annual Oswego Cemetery Walk, hosted by the Oswegoland Park District and the Oswegoland Heritage Association, with the cooperation of the Limelight Theatre Company, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 6, at the Oswego Township Cemetery, South Main Street, Oswego.

The Boulder Hill and Oswego Antique Study Group will meet Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 12:30 p.m. in the home of club Sunshine Chair Karen Pleskovich. Club Treasurer Marilyn Oros will serve as co-hostess.

Oros will also present the program. Her expertise will be shared on mid century kitchen and personal items and the catchy ditties that boosted their sales.

Radio and TV jingles were one of the first true examples of American viral marketing. Members will also bring items they have from their own personal collections to share.

The study group has met continuously since its founding in 1964, with education programs provided at each meeting by members or guest speakers.

Partnership to aid seniors OSWEGO LEDGER The Oswego Police Department has announced it is partnering with Aurora University as part of the department’s commitment to provide effective police services to the senior population in the village. Part of this commitment included last year the creation of a dedicated team of officers, with a focus on how to best serve the 55 and older community, centering on crime prevention and bridging the gap between the senior community and the residents in the village. Starting last month, Oswego Police are now able to further enhance their efforts and benefit from having an intern from the Aurora

University’s Master of Social Work program for nine months. The new intern already has experience in developing and maintaining programs and will create a needs assessment in order to identify the needs of the 55 and older population as well as assess how well the police are meeting those needs. The intern and officers will be out in the community continuing to work proactively and getting to know the residents. Public unveiling ceremony for courthouse mural Oct. 4

A public unveiling ceremony for the new mural at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville will take place next Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 4:30 p.m.

The courthouse, at 807 W. John St. in Yorkville, will be open that evening past its usual hours, until 7 p.m., so the

public has a chance to view the mural after the unveiling ceremony.

The mural was painted by artist Eulojio “Joe� Ortega of Sandwich, and paid for with donations by the Kendall Arts Guild. The mural will reflect the spirit of Kendall County, including its agricultural roots, according to the artist.

tscott@kendallcountynow.com Three windows will be replaced at the Kendall County Historic Courthouse at a cost of $39,500, after the County Board unanimously approved the project. The board has hired Patrick McCann, Inc., of Geneva to complete the project by May 1 of next year.

The building served as the county’s main judicial building until the cur-

rent courthouse was built in 1998. The original building was constructed in 1864, but was destroyed by fire. A new, replica version was built in 1887.

After falling into disrepair in the 1990s, county officials considered demolishing the building, but former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert secured funding for the building’s restoration. The restoration was funded in part by former Gov. George Ryan’s Illinois FIRST program.

Matt Epperley promoted in student services

OEHS students, staff raise funds to help grad, her family Deja Lewis, a 2016 graduate of Oswego East High School, was diagnosed with brain cancer and was not able to attend Illinois State University this fall. Her mother passed away from stomach cancer last spring before graduation. OEHS staff and students came together to figure out how to help Deja and her family. As a result, they raised over $6,000 in a week to support the Lewis family.

OSWEGO LEDGER The School District 308 Board of Education recently approved the promotion of Matt Epperley to assistant director for student services. Epperly will also serve as the district’s residency officer.

Epperley spent the past four years serving the district as a school counselor at Murphy Junior High School. Prior to joining District 308, he served as a school counselor at Marion Matt Junior High School, in Marion Epperley from August 2010 to June 2012.

He also completed his six-month internship in 2010 at Marion Junior High.

As a school counselor at Murphy Junior High, Epperley taught classroom guidance lessons in bullying prevention and conflict resolution, provided assistance for transitioning fifth graders, and co-lead a high school transition group for at-risk eighth graders.

He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in educational psychology with an emphasis in school counseling from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He earned a second master’s degree from McKendree University, in Lebanon, Ill., in educational leadership.

OHS Powder Puff football game Oct. 5 OSWEGO LEDGER Oswego High School continues a long-standing Homecoming week tradition again this year with the Powder Puff Football Game scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 5.

The annual Powder Puff game pits the junior girls against the senior girls in this annual event which will kick off at 6 p.m. at Ken Pickerill Stadium at Oswego High School.

With tutus, boas and plenty of “bling”, it’s not quite your traditional Friday night Panther football but the evening is guaranteed to provide spectators with lots of laughs and maybe even a touchdown or two.

Family, friends, students, staff and the community are invited to attend to cheer on their favorite team. Admission will be charged and will be $3 for adults and $1 for students and senior citizens. No

passes will be accepted for this event. The stadium will open at 5:30 p.m. and concessions, including pizza, nachos, popcorn, candy and a variety of drinks, will be available so bring the family and come on out and join in the fun of celebrating Homecoming 2016 at Oswego High School.

OSWEGO POLICE REPORTS DUI charge in Rt. 34 wreck A Plainfield man, Charles O’Brien, 46, of the 16000 bock of Arbor Court, was injured in a four vehicle, chain reaction accident on Route 34 at Mason Square Drive in Oswego Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m., village police reported. Police said the accident occurred when O’Brien’s vehicle struck another vehicle from behind in traffic.

The second vehicle then hit a third vehicle which then struck a fourth vehicle, according to police. The drivers of the three other vehicles were not injured, police said. O’Brien was transported to an area hospital. Police said he has been charged with driving under the influence and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Two arrested at OEHS Oswego police arrested two juveniles on charges of disorderly conduct at Oswego East High School Sept. 26 at 7 a.m. Police said the suspects were later released to their parents.

Motorist injured, cited in crash An Oswego resident, Michael Matozzi, 58, of the 200 block of Stonemill Lane, was injured in a four vehicle, chain reaction accident on Route 34 at Kendall Point Drive in Oswego Sept. 26 at 3:29 p.m., village police reported.

Police said Matozzi, who was transported with minor injuries to an area hospital, was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The drivers of the other vehicle involved in the crash were not hurt, police said.

$300 in cash stolen An Aurora resident told Oswego police that $300 in cash was stolen from her purse while she was at a business in the 400 block of Treasure Drive Sept. 24.

One injured in crash A Marengo resident, Lester S. Westmoreland, 49, of the 800 block of Doral Drive, was injured in a two vehicle crash that occurred on Prairiemarket Drive and Route 34 Sept. 20 at

1:20 p.m., Oswego police reported. Police said Westmoreland’s vehicle was struck by another vehicle driven by Jacob R. Belle, 25, of the 2200 block of Warrenville Avenue in Wheaton.

Police said Belle was not hurt, but Westmoreland was transported to an area hospital.

Drive-thru lane damage An estimated $1,500 in damage was the result when the driver of a box truck struck the overhang in a restaurant drive-thru lane in the 2700 block of Route 34 Sept. 23 at 2 p.m., Oswego police reported.

Alcohol bottles stolen Several bottles of alcohol valued at $469 were stolen from a store in the 2300 block of Route 34 in Oswego Sept. 20 at 1:15 p.m., village police reported.

Retail theft Oswego police are investigating a retail theft that occurred Sept. 23 at a store in the 2700 block of Route 34 in the village. Police said merchandise valued at $118 was stolen.

Warrant arrest Oswego police arrested James P. Conroy, 58, of the 500 block of Chestnut Drive, Oswego, at his residence Sept. 25 at 9:32 p.m. on an in-state warrant. Police said the suspect was detained at the Naperville police department.

OSWEGO LEDGER Boys and girls in third through sixth grades had fun competing Sunday in the Oswegoland Park District’s annual Have Fun? You Won! Kids Triathlon at Oswego East High School. To complete the triathlon the young athletes had to swim 100 meters in the OEHS pool, pedal their bikes on a three-mile course outside the school and then run a half-mile loop on the school track. A large contingent of parents, siblings and friends turned out to cheer on the participants. School District 308 physical education teachers assisted as event coordinators.

The Oswego East boys soccer team (7-5-2, 4-0) remained undefeated in Southwest Prairie Conference play with a 7-5 win over Plainfield North on Tuesday.

Michael Waclaw had a hat trick and one assist. Jackson Frazer had two goals and Manuel Magana was credited with four assists. Arteen Rastis and Kyle Orive also found the net for the Wolves, while Kyle Blasingame and Dawson Johnson were credited with assists.

On Sept. 24, Oswego East played to a 1-1 tie against Batavia. Frazer scored on an assist from Mangana.

The Wolves picked up a win over Joliet West on Sept. 22 behind goals from Waclaw (2) and Ryan Aten.

Oswego Varsity: On Saturday, Panthers (2-10-2) finished in a 1-1 tie with Joliet West, and the Tigers out-scored Oswego 3-1 on penalty kicks to take the win. Oswego held a 1-0 halftime lead after a goal scored by Adrian Veseli off an assist by Omar Carreno with 31:40 on the clock. Nick Kearns had three saves in goal. On Sept. 22, Oswego and Geneva played to a scoreless finish. Kearns had three saves.

On Sept. 20, Oswego fell to Plainfield East 3-2 after the Bengals won in penalty kicks, 3-1. Carreno scored (18:00) off an assist from Veseli, and Julian Ibarra (29:00) scored an unassisted goal. Kearns had five saves.

On Tuesday, Oswego finished in a 1-1 tie with Romeoville, and the Spartans won on penalty kicks, 5-4. Carreno scored the goal off an assist from Ibarra in the 64th minute of play. Kearns made four saves.

The teams played a match play format or 3 holes scramble, 3 holes best ball, 3 holes alternate shot, the group with the lowest score earned a point for their team. Wolves prep for big October

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com After a 7-0 run through the Southwest Prairie Conference, the Oswego East girls tennis team looked forward to testing their talents further north.

The Wolves posted a 2-1 finish at the Lake Park Invite last Saturday with wins over host Lake Park (5-4) and Schaumburg (7-2) and an 8-1 loss to Maine South to move Oswego East’s dual record to 10-3 overall. Jaija Harlow and Nitya Chagoor scored the only point against Maine South at No. 3 doubles.

“We played a larger team format than usual with five doubles teams and four singles players, which adds to the depth you need to carry and make sure you have a fuller program in order to win those matches,” Oswego East coach Pete Conrad said. “Maine South has probably one of the top five doubles teams in the state, and they took what I think is a pretty good doubles team in [Keertan] Kota and [Annie] Carmody 0-6, 0-6. From there, all there other talent gets bumped down so it makes for tough matches. We held out strong in a couple spots, but just could not overcome.

“This is state competition that hopefully will prepare us for a very difficult sectional, and no offense to our conference, but this was played at a very different pace. All of our girls realize that when you step foot on the courts,

everything is faster. Overall, it was a very good day and it felt positive.”

Oswego East will close out the regular season with the two-day Lockport Invite on Friday and Saturday before hosting Kaneland on Monday. The Southwest Prairie Conference tournament arrives at Plainfield Central on Oct. 7-8. The Wolves hold a lead over Plainfield North and Minooka atop the conference standings going into the final tournament.

“We felt the same way last year and had a pretty solid lead, but we needed one match and didn’t get it,” Conrad said. “We have a big Lockport tournament this weekend which hopefully will give us really good competition.”

For the first time, the IHSA has divided the girls tennis state series into two classes. Oswego East will compete in the nine-team Class 2A West Aurora Sectional on Oct. 14-15 with East Aurora, Metea Valley, Waubonsie Valley, West Aurora, Naperville Central, Naperville North, Oswego and Yorkville.

“Without those smaller teams in there, now every sectional in the upper division is going to be jam-packed with really good teams,” Conrad said.

“We’re on the cusp. We’re a very solid team, but as we see when we play teams like Maine South, we still have a lot to do in order to be considered one of those upper echelon teams. It’s going to be harder to get out of those first and second rounds and into Saturday play.”

Continued from page 20 On the very next play, Jaylon Banks (10-of-21, 205 passing) threw a ball over the middle to a wide open Colin O’Reilly, who proceeded to take it the remaining distance for a 93-yard score which made it 14-0 with 5:04 left in the opening half.

“We noticed that the safety was dropping down into the box so we recognized that if I just went straight out and right up the seam that it would be there and then I was just off to the races,” O’Reilly said. “The run seemed like it was never-ending, but I didn’t take my eyes off of the endzone. I think that was the big momentum shift. Our defense stepped up and we got the job done.”

Oswego East looked like it might add another score before the break after taking over at North’s 30. It got down the 2 but Kelly-Martin was tackled for a two-yard loss on a fourth down play by Rob Ostapkowicz.

While the Wolves were struggling offensively, the Tigers were having even more difficulties in the first half. They punted five times and turned the ball over twice on downs.

“We just tried to make sure that we contained their running back and their quarterback, because we knew was a

scrambler,” linebacker BJ Graves said.

“We knew that they would try to do a lot of hitch and go’s and slants so we wanted to contain those and we also wanted to shutdown their running game. We knew that our offense would put up points and our defense is the best in the conference so we just wanted to keep that momentum up for the next four games.”

It was more of the same in the final half as the Wolves punted four times and had a pass intercepted while the Tigers punted twice, lost the ball on downs twice and also had a pass picked off.

North had its best series late in the third quarter when Brady Miller (17-of35, 122 passing) threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Ryan Krzystofiak with 4:11 left in the period to make it a 14-7 contest.

In the final quarter, Oswego East got to North’s 2 following a 63-yard screen pass to Kelly-Martin, but following a sack, Banks was intercepted in the endzone by Dillon McCarthy.

But on the next series, a bad snap on a punt gave East the ball at North’s 20.

Six plays later, Banks tossed a 7 yard pass to Kelly-Martin to make it 21-7 with 6:22 remaining.

After North saw a series stopped when Kijana Caldwell picked off a pass at his own 9, the Tigers ended the scoring with 1:25 left when Miller snuck in from a yard out.

Crosstown tickets sold out, parking limited

Gates open at 4 p.m. The crosstown football game between Oswego and Oswego East will take place on Friday, Sept. 30 at Oswego East. The sophomore game begins at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity game to follow at 7 p.m.

Parking: Lots will be closed when full. Satellite parking with shuttle service will be available from: Bednarcik Junior High, Plank Junior High and Oswego High School. Shuttles will begin at approximately 4:30 p.m. and run until 30 minutes after the conclusion of the varsity game.

Parking lots will be closed when full. There are many more people attending the game than parking spots available at Oswego East HS. Seating: No saving of seats will be permitted. Blankets placed on the bleachers will be removed. There will be no re-entry into the game for all students. Once any student has entered the stadium, they must remain in the stadium.

Romeoville’s offense came to life in the second half, but it was too late Friday night as visiting Oswego rolled to a 42-22 victory in the Southwest Prairie Conference game.

Oswego (5-0, 5-0) built a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on Drew White’s 7-yard touchdown run and Anthony Grimes’ 1-yard run.

Romeoville (0-5, 0-5) got on the board on Zead Hasan’s 31-yard field goal, and White’s 19-yard run made it 21-3 at the half.

“We knew Romeoville had threats and we respected their speed,” Oswego coach Brian Cooney said. “But we have been coaching them to play as a unit to overcome this.”

“We had opportunities but we shot ourselves in the foot on this drive (that ended in the field goal) and at other times during the game,” Romeoville coach Oliver Gibson said.

“We cannot give teams big leads early in the game We have to learn to compete early in the first quarter.”

Spartans junior quarterback Cam Neely ran 1 yard for a touchdown and threw a 28-yard scoring pass to Nolan Soper in the second half.

Romeoville’s Lonnie Trent recovered an onside kick after the second touchdown, and with 3 seconds left, Soper completed the scoring when he grabbed a 3-yard scoring pass from Neely.

White ran 31 yards for another score and Levi Olson hit Eliot Pipkin with a 21-yard scoring pass to stretch the Panthers’ lead to 35-3 in the third quarter. After Neely’s short touchdown run for Romeoville, Charles Coleman completed the Oswego scoring with a 2-yard run that made it 42-9.

Jordan Nettles set up Neely’s touchdown with a 24-yard pass reception from Neely.

“Jordan Nettles is a relentless competitor,” Gibson said. “He will compete anytime, anywhere. He has a great football attitude, which will help him in his next step in football.

“I am very proud of the way this team fought and competed Now we have four weeks to show our progress and to do that we have to limit our errors.”

Oswego will now prepare to travel to Oswego East, which improved to 5-0 for the first time in school history with a 21-14 win at Plainfield North. The game will take place Friday at Oswego East at 7 p.m.

“We are growing as a team. We have made progress this week and we will build for next week,” Cooney said.

Historic 5-0 start for Wolves Win powered by defense to set up SPC title clash

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com When two football teams are averaging 46.4 points between them, most would expect to see a high-scoring affair when they meet up.

But while Friday’s Southwest Prairie Conference game between Oswego East and Plainfield North featured a few offensive highlights, it was the play of the physical defenses that set the tone.

The Wolves kept the Tigers off of the scoreboard in the first half and only allowed one touchdown until the late going as they captured a 21-14 victory to move to 5-0 for the first time in school history.

That set the table for Friday’s clash between Oswego East (5-0, 5-0) and Oswego (5-0, 5-0) at Oswego East not only for district bragging rights but also for first place in the SPC. Oswego is undefeated against Oswego East in the 11year history between District 308 programs.

“A lot of times it’s the defense that makes the difference and our defense played very well tonight,” Oswego East coach Tyson LeBlanc said. “And their front six defensively is a very solid group and we weren’t able to run the ball on them and we have to go back the drawing board a little bit and figure out where we made mistakes or we were just getting beat because they were better than us up front and I’m sure it’s a little of both.

“With the way that our defense was playing tonight, any time that you can get two scores up, we felt that was a good cushion for us. I’d rather win ugly than lose pretty. We’re 5-0 for the first time in school history and we have a date with the guys on the other side of town next week. It will be two 5-0 teams and it’s been a very lopsided rivalry.

But we’ll keep doing what we do and try to chip away and hopefully we can get one.”

Rushing yards were difficult to come by for both squads. Oswego East finished with 59 yards rushing on 32 carries while North (3-2) had 64 rushing

Things started off well for the Wolves as Tyler Schumacher returned the opening kickoff into Tigers territory.

Two plays later, Ivory Kelly-Martin (1859 rushing, 4-79 receiving) ran in from 33 yards out to put East quickly up 7-0.

Oswego East struggled on its next five series, punting on the first four before fumbling at North’s 37 yard line with 7:21 left in the second quarter. On the next play, the Tigers were at East’s 16 after TJ Kane tossed a 47-yard pass to Connor Peplow.

But the Wolves defense stiffened and limited Tyler Hoosman to 9 yards on four carries to get the ball on down at its own 7 with 5:17 remaining in the half.
