Shooting range not likely to proceed Montgomery officials expect withdrawal of plan, but vote to acknowledge commission’s opposition

By JOHN ETHEREDGE jetheredge@shawmedia.com Montgomery’s community development director Richard Young told the village board Monday evening that he expects a proposal to locate a firearms shooting range in a vacant storefront in the Settlers Landing shopping center on Douglas Road at Route 30 will be withdrawn.

Nevertheless, the board went ahead and in two separate, unanimous ballots voted to accept recommendations from the village’s plan commission in opposition to the shooting range proposal.

Last month, the commission discussed and, in a 3-1 ballot, recommended the board deny a zoning amendment that would allow firearm sales and uses in the village’s B-2 general retail business district as a special use.

In another 3-1 ballot, the commission recommended denial of a special use zoning permit for the shooting range in the Setters Landing shopping

center.

The village’s zoning ordinance currently allows firearms uses in M-1 and M-2 zoned manufacturing districts.

Bj’s Shooting, LLC has proposed opening the shooting range in a now vacant portion of the shopping center that fronts Douglas Road, next to the Dollar General store.

In voting to deny the request, commission members expressed concern that allowing firearm uses as a special use in a B-2 district could prove disruptive to other businesses in the center.

Commission members also noted that some B-2 uses in the village are located near residential areas.

In a memo to the board, Jerad Chipman, the village’s senior planner, said it is village’s staff’s opinion that amending the ordinance to allow firearms uses as a special use in B-2 zoning districts “would allow firearm uses in locations across the entire village without few restrictions.”

ufacturing districts, Chipman said village staff believes that the zoning ordinance “addresses firearm uses appropriately in its current form.”

He explained, “Manufacturing districts are generally located farther from residential land uses and are more conducive to the potential nuisances that may occur as a result of discharging firearms. Most large unit business district sites include multiple tenants located within larger buildings in an in-line setting. Because of noise concerns, this use would not be conducive to other tenants.”

Prior to voting on the commission member’s recommendations, Steve Jungermann, a board member, said he had no problem with the proposed opening of a shooting range in the village, just the proposed location.

Referring to commission members and their recommendations, Jungermann said, “They would rather have it (shooting ranges) in a standalone location and I would agree with that.”

Young confirmed that the proposed siting of the shooting range in an inline shopping center like Settlers Landing was a “major objection” for commission members.

Kendall County property assessment changes published in today’s paper

Brew at Bridge fest returning OSWEGO LEDGER Several thousand craft beer enthusiasts, their friends and families are expected to attend the annual Brew at the Bridge festival this Saturday, Sept. 17, from 1 to 7 p.m. in downtown Oswego.

Organized by the Oswegoland Park District, the festival will be held in Hudson Crossing Park at Harrison and Washington streets. (Route 34).

To participate in the sampling at Brew at the Bridge, those attending must purchase the 2016 $20 brew package. This includes a commemorative glass and five 2-ounce brewery tastes. Three 2-ounce limited supply

home brews from area home brew clubs will also be available to taste while supplies last.

This fee supports the music, tents, and staff for Brew at the Bridge.

In accordance with Illinois law, there will be no sales of bottled beer in the park. While outside food is welcome, no outside alcoholic beverages are allowed into the park during the craft beer festival. Coolers and backpacks will be checked by volunteers at the entrances.

Brew at the Bridge is open to families.

Leashed pets are welcome at the fest. Guests are responsible for cleaning up after the pets accompanying them. Please pack supplies accordingly.

“The best thing to do when people get their assessment notice, or if they see the publication, is to contact their township assessor and talk to them about the assessment,” he said.

“Because sometimes things can be resolved with the township assessor without having to go through the formal Board of Review hearing.”

Nicoletti said there are typically two issues that people have when they appeal an assessment.

“There are usually two avenues where people will pursue that – houses that are like theirs or larger within their subdivision are assessed for less than they are, or they have comparable sales of properties that show that their house is worth less than what it’s assessed for,” he said.

However, like every year, Nicoletti stressed that nothing can be done once people receive their tax bills in the mail in May. The time to act is in the fall, when they see their assessments.

“There’s nothing that can be done by the time a tax bill comes out,” he said. “The 30-day window you receive in the fall is when you have the time to contest the assessed value.”

BRIEF Police: Expect delays due to ‘Brew at Bridge’ fest

Oswego police are reminding the public to expect increased traffic congestion and delays in the village’s downtown this Saturday, Sept. 17, due to the Brew at the Bridge craft beer festival taking place in Hudson Crossing Park along the east bank of the Fox River, just north of Washington Street (Route 34).

Police said motorists should expect delays in particular while traveling on Route 34 through the

downtown area between noon and 8 p.m. Delays on Madison, Washington and Main streets are expected.

Motorists may want to consider alternate routes around these areas if they are not coming in for the event, police said.

Parking for Brew at the Bridge will be available at Hudson Crossing Park, the municipal lot on Harrison, village hall at the northwest corner of Routes 31 and 34 and on streets in the downtown area.

The start – call it the Opening Day – of a new property tax season in Kendall County begins today with the publication of property assessment changes in today’s Plano Record.

Inside this edition of the paper, readers will find a special 84-page section listing all of the changes to assessments on individual properties throughout the county for the coming tax year.

County property owners should also soon receive a notice in the mail from the county informing them their assessment has been changed.

Under state law, all properties, with the exception of those zoned for agricultural use, must be assessed at onethird their fair market value.

This winter, county officials will use the new assessments in calculating how much each county property owner will owe on their annual tax bills. The county is expected to mail out the new bills late next April or in early May.

The assessed value of all property in county increased an average of 7.5 percent over last year, according to the county’s supervisor of assessments.

Andy Nicoletti, the county’s chief assessing official, collects assessments from the nine townships – including a three-township assessment district – to prepare for the county’s property tax collection process.

This year’s taxes, to be paid in 2017, will be based on 2013, 2014 and 2015 property values.

Nicoletti said assessments increased across the county by about 7.5 percent, with the increases varying by township.

Nicoletti said the highest increase took place in Little Rock Township – its overall assessed value went up a little more than 18 percent. The other townships increased as follows over last year’s assessments: Big Grove, 1.12 percent; Bristol, 10.2 percent; Fox, no change; Kendall, 7.02 percent; Lisbon-­NaAuSay-Seward multi-township district, 4.95 percent; and Oswego, 5.57 percent.

Nicoletti said there is some control

of property tax increases because of the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law, which was put in force by county voters in a November 1997 referendum.

Commonly referred to as the tax cap, the PTELL limits the total yearly increase in taxes extended, or billed, to 5 percent or the Consumer Price Index, whichever is lower. Nicoletti said CPI was 0.7, so “it’s not gonna be a huge increase.”

Residents could see increases on the tax bills they receive next spring, Nicoletti confirmed, but it will depend on individual property values and the tax rates of the local government agencies.

“There is a potential for an increase in the taxes, but we are a PTELL county,” he said. “So typically as assessments increase, tax rates come down, and as assessments decrease, tax rates go up.”

In the event property owners believe their new assessments are in excess of the one-third fair market value, they have 30 days beginning today to file an appeal with the county’s Board of Review.

In the past couple years, approximately 500 people have appealed their property assessments to the county, Nicoletti said. However, he said residents should first try to negotiate an

‘Long arm of the law’ has far reach these days There’s an old saying in law enforcement that you can’t outrun a police radio. The expression likely dates back decades to the time when radios were first installed in squad cars. We thought of that expression when we received a report from Oswego police last week concerning the arrest of a suspect in a child sexual assault case that originated in the village.

The report of the suspect’s tracking and eventual apprehension featured all the intrigue and drama of a top-notch detective thriller. Oswego police had been searching for the suspect since March, when the alleged incidents were reported to them by the victim’s parents.

The search heated up about two weeks ago when detectives learned the suspect had relocated to Arkansas but had traveled to Japan and was attempt-

ing to leave that country for Australia. Detectives notified Interpol, the International Criminal Police Organization, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations Division who, in turn, notified Australian authorities.

Police said the Aussies revoked the suspect’s Australian travel visa the same day they were notified. Meanwhile, back home in Kendall County, the state’s attorney approved six felony charges against the suspect and a judge issued a warrant for the suspect’s arrest. Oswego detectives then notified Interpol of the warrant and Japanese authorities detained the suspect and then arranged to have him returned to the U.S. Oswego police detectives took the suspect into custody when he stepped off a plane at O’Hare Airport in Chicago. He is now awaiting trial at the

Kendall County jail in Yorkville According to police, the events leading to the suspect’s arrest played out over a period of just eight days, from Aug. 23 when they learned he had traveled to Japan to Aug. 31 when detectives picked him up at O’Hare.

It’s still true, in most cases you can’t outrun a police radio. But now – thanks to countless more technological advances and the cooperation of police and other law enforcement agencies across the nation and in other countries – the long arm of the law truly has a long, long reach from Kendall County these days. It’s good to know that when called upon to do so, local and county authorities are able to swiftly reach out and work with both domestic and foreign police agencies to bring suspects to justice.

World’s Fair did much to promote model railroading Well, we’ve made it to the Ides of September, so we’ve got that going for us.

The kids are back in school; some have been back in class for some time now, which means parents are starting to get into the swing of their autumn schedules of acting as their private family Uber driver, on-call at all hours of the day and night.

As for the kids, they’ve all written their “What I did last summer” essays and now they’re getting right into the regular grind of trying to remember where their math book is and what day of the week their schedule says they’re supposed to have lunch at which time.

Retired teachers have calmed down, again realizing that seeing all those yellow school buses driving around doesn’t mean they’re slacking off because they’re not heading off to teach school every morning. Once in a while, though, one of them forgets and sets off to the nearest Chalkboard store to stock up on stickers and posters for their classroom before remembering after they’re in the car they don’t have to spend their own money on classroom supplies any more, and then heading over to Panera or The Village Grind for a cup of chai tea latte instead.

Me, I sit here in the earliest of autumn periods of time looking with interest as the mail carrier arrives in her dorky little Jeep out front and delivers what the Brits call the post.

Although it’s the middle of September, some outfits are sending out catalogs touting gifts they’re interested in having you consider, since it’s a lot fewer shopping days until Christmas than it

Free freedom

To the Editor: Those least invested in securing our freedom are oftentimes the most vocal about claiming their right to it. Many Americans who spend their entire life on the receiving end of freedom never learn to fully appreciate the struggle and sacrifice involved in attaining and protecting it. Some of these recipients of free freedom become dissatisfied with their share, and come to believe they are owed a bigger piece than the people who actually paid for it.

To them, our National Flag is nothing more than a piece of cloth and our National Anthem is just a song, both completely disconnected from the long history of self-sacrifice they truly represent. But, for those of us who have participated in the fight to protect freedom, we veterans and current military, our Flag and our Anthem are precious lasting connections to the dear friends and family we lost.

When we see our Flag, it’s like looking through an old photo album. When we hear our Anthem, we have to restrain ourselves from tearing up because it reminds us how and why we lost our loved ones.

No one can ever separate us from our Flag.

If they drive a knife into our Flag, they would not be able to miss our heart.

It puzzles me how these recipients of free freedom can be so detached from our National Anthem and our Flag, and yet be so passionate in claiming the right to use them to communicate their disdain for the country that has provided it.

I wish we didn’t have to endure the contempt of those who are completely unwilling to participate in the protection of our freedom, but who are so ravenous in their consumption of it. But, I’m realistic enough to understand that this will always remain a wish un-granted.

Thus, whenever we’re subjected to their disrespect for and mistreatment of our National Anthem and our Flag, we are immediately expected to understand and quietly accept that they have a right to do it, no matter how painful it is for us who paid for that right. For some reason their free speech is louder than ours, and their share of freedom has grown larger than ours.

Those who have contributed the least to ensuring their freedom have somehow become the arbiters of our freedom.

Petitions available soon for Oswego Township elections OSWEGO LEDGER The Oswego Township Offices to be filled in the April 4, 2017 Consolidated Election include: Township Supervisor, Township Clerk, Township Assessor, Township Highway Commissioner and four Township Trustees.

Candidates seeking election must file nominating petitions with signature requirements of not less than five percent nor more than eight percent of the number of persons who voted at the last regular election in the township in which such township voted as a unit for the election of officers to serve its respective territorial area. The five percent required minimum number of signatures for Oswego Township Independent Candidates is 145. The maximum eight percent allowed number of signatures for Oswego Township Independent Candidates is 232.

To qualify as candidates, applicants must be registered voters of Oswego Township and have resided within the township for at least one year.

All candidates for Township Assessor must file a certificate of qualifications with or prior to their filing of nomination papers pursuant to the provisions of Section 2-45 of the Property Tax Code[35ILCS200/2-45].

Petition signers may only sign one petition for each office to be filled.

People interested in running for any of these offices may stop by the Oswego Township Office at 84 Templeton Drive, Suite 104, Oswego, after Sept. 20 to receive their candidate nominating papers and required forms. The office hours are 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily Monday through Friday.

Township Clerk and Local Election Official George Hettrich said that petitions may not be circulated prior to Sept. 20. The filing period for the petitions is Dec. 12-16 from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and on Dec. 19 from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. A public pre-filing notice stating the dates and hours for filing petitions will be issued as a press release and a legal notice to this newspaper in December.

Oswego man gets prison time for cocaine delivery

“During that transaction, Fultz again delivered a lesser amount of cocaine to an individual in Kendall County,” Weis said.

Fultz received the seven-year sentence, along with three years of mandatory supervised release, for his original delivery of cocaine.

Once he completes that sentence, he will have to complete another 30 Deashon T. months of probaFultz tion for the June 2015 cocaine delivery, Weis explained.

If Fultz fails the terms of his probation, he could be resentenced to state prison for another three to 14 years, Weis said.

“Fultz has a history of drug-related offenses prior to being charged and convicted in Kendall County,” Weis said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Frank Gorup prosecuted the cases, and attorney David Camic represented Fultz, Weis said.

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com An Oswego man is going to prison for delivery of cocaine, Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced Sept. 6.

Kendall County Judge Timothy McCann sentenced Deashon T. Fultz, 26, of the 5000 block of U.S. Route 34 in Oswego to seven years in state prison for unlawful delivery of cocaine.

Fultz was charged following investigations led by the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team, or CPAT, according to Weis.

Weis said Fultz delivered cocaine to an individual on multiple occasions in December of 2013 and January of 2014.

“Fultz’s last delivery of cocaine was over 15 grams, which made Fultz a Class X [felony] offender,” Weis said in a statement.

Fultz’s case was set to go to trial in June 2015, but he was arrested for a separate drug transacation on June 12, 2015, Weis said.

Montgomery police say the owner of a business in the 2000 block of Orchard Road reported that four unidentified subjects burglarized his business in the early morning hours of Sept. 5.

“The owner of the business stated several glass pipes, vaporizers and tobacco products were taken,” Montgomery police said in a press release.

Police are looking for the public’s help in identifying the individual associated with this burglary. Those with information should call the Montgomery Police Department at 331212-9058 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at 630-892-1000.

By ERIKA WURST news@kendallcountynow.com Road improvements will be underway soon on more than a dozen village of Oswego streets after board members unanimously approved hiring a company to complete the construction during a meeting Sept. 6.

Builders Paving, which completed 2015’s resurfacing project for the village and is currently working on the Ogden Falls road reconstruction project in the Ogden Falls subdivision, was the lowest costing responsible bidder of four bids received by the village, according to village documents.

Bidding opened on Aug. 30 and prices for the project ranged from Builders Paving’s $980,888 low bid to the highest

bid of $1,336,633.82.

The roads scheduled for improvements throughout the project are: Bison Road, Chipmunk Drive, Fawn Drive, Otter Way, Etsinger Road, Calumet Street, Wilmette Street, Cardinal Avenue, Douglas Road, Morgan Valley Drive, Windsor Drive, Willowwood Drive, Gates Creek Drive, Ferret Crossing, Cougar Lane, Inishowen Court, Kiwi Court, Fanad Court, Owen Court and Lakeshore Drive.

The project consists of resurfacing with hot-mix asphalt binder and surface courses, polymerized leveling binder, curb and gutter removal and replacement, sidewalk removal and replacement, pavement patching, and miscellaneous other work at various locations within the village.

OSWEGO POLICE REPORTS Fleeing among charges Oswego police arrested Alexander W. Gabris, 23, of the 100 block of Chesterfield Drive, Oswego, at his residence Sept. 12 on charges of fleeing and eluding, obstructing, speeding and no valid driver’s license. Police said Gabris later posted bond and was released pending a court appearance.

Unlocked vehicles burglarized Loose change, two phone chargers and headphones were stolen from three vehicles that were parked and left unlocked in the 400 block of Kensington Drive in Oswego overnight Sept. 10, village police reported.

The loss was estimated at $30, according to police.

Warrant arrest Oswego police arrested Gustavo A. Juarez, 55, of the 2800 block of Cranston Circle, Yorkville, on an in-state warrant on Route 34 at Osage Court Sept. 12 at 10:35 a.m. Police said Juarez was later released after posting bond.

Alcohol stolen Alcohol valued at $150 was stolen from a store in the 2700 block of Route 34 in Oswego on Sept. 10 at 9 p.m., according to village police.

Domestic battery charge Oswego police arrested a female juvenile

on a charge of domestic battery on Van Buren Street on Sept. 11 at 5:45 p.m. Police said the suspect was later released pending a court appearance.

Arrest three at gas station Oswego police arrested Javier Alvarez, 19, and Eric Hernandez Guzman, 18, both of Aurora, at a gas station in the 4000 block of Route 34 on Sept. 10 at 1:04 a.m.

Police said Alvarez has been charged with possession and consumption of alcohol by a minor, while Guzman has been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said they also arrested a juvenile who was with Alvarez and Guzman.

The juvenile has been charged with possession of less than 10 grams of cannabis, according to police.

Downtown burglary An apartment in the 70th block of Main Street in downtown Oswego was burglarized Sept. 9, village police reported. Police said property worth $300 was taken from the apartment.

Juvenile driver arrested Oswego police arrested a 15-year-old after stopping the vehicle he was driving on Route 30 at Fifth Street Aug. 26 at 3:14 p.m. Police said the suspect has been charged with driving without a valid license, speeding and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

School District 308 to offer Seal of Biliteracy to qualified graduates OSWEGO LEDGER School District 308 will begin offering the Illinois Seal of Biliteracy to recognize graduating high school students who are proficient in both English and at least one other language.

District 308 will also offer the Commendation of Biliteracy to students who demonstrate high levels of proficiency in their languages but who do not meet the criteria to earn the more rigorous Seal of Biliteracy.

“Being able to offer the Seal of Biliteracy to our graduating students is an historic event. For the first time, we will be able to officially recognize students who reach high levels of proficiency in both English and at least one other language,” said Director of English Learners Theresa Ulrich.

“This achievement will be a testament of their hard work supported by their families, School District 308 world language programs, and School District 308 English learner programs, such as dual language. We look forward to celebrating and honoring the first of many gradu-

ates with the Seal of Biliteracy in May 2017.”

The Seal of Biliteracy encourages students to study and become communicatively proficient in multiple languages. It also certifies attainment of biliteracy skills using a data-based, nationally recognized assessment framework and recognizes the value of language and cultural diversity. The seal also provides employers with a method of identifying people with language and biliteracy skills while creating more high school graduates prepared to compete in global job markets, according to the district.

For the 2016-17 school year, District 308 will offer the Seal of Biliteracy in the following languages: Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, and Portuguese.

Students interested in earning the Seal of Biliteracy need to submit an application. They can request an application through the World Language Department in their high school or download one from the district’s website, www. sd308.org.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS DUI arrest on Bridge St. County sheriff’s deputies arrested Barboza Ricardo Gonzalez, 25, of the 500 block of Laurel Street, Elgin, after stopping his vehicle on Bridge Street and Somonauk Street in Yorkville on Sept. 11 at 2:24 a.m.

Police said they observed Gonzalez commit multiple moving violations prior to stopping his vehicle. Police said Gonzalez has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and was ticketed for speeding 60 mph in a 35 mph zone and disobeying a traffic control signal.

Two cited in crash Stephen M. Lindstrom, 37, of the 600 block of Kimberly Lane, Montgomery, and Jack M. Maechtle, 17, of the 1600 block of Cypress Lane, Yorkville, received minor injuries when their vehicles collided on Eldamain Road at Galena Road in Bristol Township on Sept. 10 at 12:14 p.m., according to the county sheriff’s office.

Police said Lindstrom was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Maechtle was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, while

Lindstrom was cited for a U-turn violation and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Both Lindstrom and Maechtle were given court dates, police said.

OSWEGO LEDGER School District 308’s Boundary Advisory Committee conducted its first meeting Sept. 6. The 37-member committee, which is responsible for redrawing District 308’s school boundaries, consists of two board chairs – Lauri Doyle and Dr. Michael McDowell – 10 administrators, and 25 community members.

Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin kicked off the meeting by welcoming the committee members before Board of Education Secretary Lauri Doyle addressed the group and thanked them for agreeing to be a part of the committee.

As part of the process of redrawing boundaries, district administration will review the placement of special programs as placement of these programs will affect the committee’s process based on enrollment and building capacity. The Board of Education has made it clear that it wants longevity when it comes to the recommended boundary changes.

Following the introduction of the committee members, RSP and Associates, a firm hired by District 308 to help navigate redrawing of school boundaries, reviewed the process that the members will follow, the boundary scope, and the criteria as set forth by the Board of Education.

They were also encouraged to talk with community members about what they discussed at the meeting and to list to their ideas and provide those responses at the next meeting on Sept. 15. There were no public comments following the meeting.

Interim principal named at Bednarcik Jr. High School OSWEGO LEDGER School District 308 Board of Education recently approved the appointment of John Francis as interim principal at Bednarcik Junior High School in Aurora.

Francis was the assistant principal at Bednarcik and has replaced former Bednarcik Principal Dr. Sharon Alexander, who now serves as the assistant director of assessment, data, and accountability for District 308.

The Montgomery Memorial VFW Post in the village’s downtown was the site for a 15th anniversary observance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., on Sunday.

The event, co-sponsored by Rolling Thunder Inc., included a Patriots Run of motorcycles, a remembrance ceremony and music.

Rolling Thunder was incorporated in 1995.

Members include veterans and non-veterans who are united in the cause to bring full accountability for the prisoners of war and those missing in action (POW/MIA) of all wars, reminding the government, the media and the public by their watchwords, “We will not forget.”

September 2006 The Oswego School District announced the organization of the “Kids Come First Committee” to work for passage of a $450 million bond referendum the school board had placed on the November ballot.

September 2001 Like the rest of the United States, area residents and local government officials were shocked and stunned by the terrorist attacks Sept. 11 in New York City and Washington, D.C. All Oswego High School athletic events and a special Oswego Village Board meeting that had been scheduled for the evening of Sept. 11 were canceled. The attacks also raised some fears of a gas shortage, prompting many area residents to line-up at gas stations to top off their tanks. By the afternoon of Sept. 11, many U.S. flags could be seen flying at homes and businesses in Oswego and Montgomery. The Kendall County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Response Team (SRT) was activated shortly after the attacks occurred. However, County Sheriff Richard Randall said Sept. 11 proved a “quiet day” in the county. The SRT was placed on ‘stand-down’ Sept. 12.

Someone dumped cyanide in the river causing a massive fish kill from Aurora south, the Kendall County Record reported. The cyanide was evidently put in the river near the Aurora Sanitary District plant just south of U.S. Route 30 near Montgomery. The previous week, the Record reported that soap bubbles on the river at the Palmer Dam in Yorkville were the result of laundry detergents that were also being piped into the river and creeks that flowed into the river.

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The cross country course at Detweiller Park in Peoria is typically a fast, flat course that provides season-best times for high school runners.

But after the ground absorbed nearly five inches of rain in the 10 days leading up to Saturday’s First to the Finish Invite, the Oswego East boys and girls cross country teams simply had to survive through the muddy conditions.

“We had a different kind of race than what we were expecting,” Oswego East girls coach Lisa Cook said. “Normally you go to Peoria to be flat and fast and see where they’re at if other factors are not involved. It just wasn’t the kind of race we had. It became more

about who’s tough and who can handle mud on every turn. All in all, we fared pretty well.”

The Oswego East girls finished 16th in the 38-team field, with Naperville North edging out Yorkville for the team championship, 81-82. Southwest Prairie Conference foe and defending Class 3A state champion Minooka was third with 118 points, but placed three runners in the top six.

The Wolves were led by the tandem of senior Alexis Henz, who clocked in at 19:24 to place 46th in a field of more than 330 runners, while junior Kendra Standish finished in 19:28 to place 51st overall. Junior Abby Flammersfeld (20:20), junior Amanda Boczkowski (20:32), junior Isabella Gyori (20:35) and sophomore Elyssa Gall (20:39) formed

a nice split with sophomore Katherine Sim (20:46) and Morgan Ede (20:53).

“It was exciting to have both Alexis and Kendra up in the top 50,” Cook said. “Our one to 10 split is better than we’ve probably ever had, but it’s about 2:00 from one to 10 and we need to get it lower than that and get our top five even closer than that. It was a learning experience.”

The boys placed ninth out of 47 teams, while Downers Grove North topped the team standings.

Senior and returning state qualifier Dylan Zangri made his way through the course to finish eighth overall and lead Oswego East with a time of 15:26 – impressive considering he didn’t stay on his feet for the whole race.

“He looks a lot more confident down

there. He actually fell in the first part of the course. It was very wet down there,” Oswego East boys’ coach Jim Milner said of Zangri.

Senior Jake Klancir clocked in at 16:14, while junior Matt Blanco (16:31), senior Bradley Thornton (16:33) and senior Chris Smith (16:37) packed together to round out Oswego East’s top five.

“They did a real good job. I thought they worked the course well and it’s definitely something to build on,” Milner said. “We’re still focusing on building the pack and getting more guys up there. Things are looking good and we just keep moving forward.”

The next large-scale meet will take place at Oakhurst Forest Preserve for the annual Aurora Central Catholic Charger Classic on Sept. 24.

Oswego girls taking a swing at history; now 7-2 in duals

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Oswego-Oswego East co-op girls golf team is on par for a big September after a strong showing in its first eight matches of the season.

Oswego has built a 7-2 dual match record, most recently picking up a 178206 win over Plainfield South on Tuesday. The team score marks the first time the program has broken the 180 mark in school history. Kiana Krahulik carded a 40 and Summer Hawkins had her best round of the year with a 42 while Emily Staples and Autumn Sullivan turned in 48s to complete the team score.

“Our top three are playing very consistently,” coach Brian Chandler said. “They are constantly putting up scores that are helping us get our wins in match play. Kiana, Summer and Au-

tumn have been our best three so far.”

The team had several big outings last week, defeating Plainfield North 186-201 on Sept. 6 after Krahulik broke 40 for the first time in her career with a round of 38. Hawkins (43), Sullivan (51) and Cassidy Max (53) also scored in the top four. Oswego also picked up a 193214 win over Glenbard East on Sept. 7.

Krahulik (44), Hawkins (46) and Sullivan (51) scored while Lauren Zalud had her first top-four varsity score with a round of 52 – a season best for Zalud.

“The girls have been playing really, really well right now. They’re not leaving extra shots on the course,” Chandler said. “They’re making their birdies and pars when they need to, which has really been the key. Kiana has really been shooting some low scores, and that’s really been bringing down our team scores.”

Oswego now enters the 22-team

Guilford Invitational at Ingersoll Golf course in Rockford on Saturday, which Chandler expects to give the squad a solid challenge before the Interstate Eight Conference meet arrives on Sept.

“We have a couple girls who can’t make it with other things going on, so this will be a good opportunity for those girls on the cusp for conference and regionals to show what they can do at an 18-hole, competitive tournament,” Chandler said.

“Sam has been very consistent,” Oswego East coach Jim Vera said. “We know that Oswego is one of the top teams in the conference.”

clinched a triangular win on Tuesday with a season-best team score, led by the efforts of Craig Schlegel (35), Kobe Taylor (37), Mason Lee (38) and Zach Krisch (39).

Batavia Invite: Oswego East traveled to Pheasant Run on Saturday and shot a 375 behind Sam Behnke (46-45–91), Alex Hwang (43-49–92), Collman Aaron (46-47–93) and Zach Strahanoski (5049–99).

Panthers break into win column against Plainfield East

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Oswego girls tennis coach Ryan Parr continues to mix up his lineup, and the changes resulted in a big Southwest Prairie Conference win over Plainfield East.

The Panthers (1-7) hosted the Bengals on Sept. 8 and notched a 5-2 victory after a singles sweep and wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

“The girls are working really hard,” Parr said. “We’re out of position in some spots, but we’re building for the end of the season.”

Against Plainfield East, Eden Braun notched a victory at first singles while Brenna Clausen won at No. 2 singles and Angelina Rose Pelikan picked up a win at third singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Hannah Castillo and Lauren Gotchie earned a victory at No. 1 doubles while Eva Ki-

est and Anna Brudzinski teamed up for the win at third doubles.

Parr changed the lineup after an 0-6 start to the season. Castillo and Gotchie won at No. 2 doubles against Joliet West, as did Brudzinski and Kiest at No. 4 doubles, but Oswego lost the match 4-3 on Sept. 6. As a result, Parr bumped up both teams on his lineup card.

“We haven’t had the results we’ve wanted, so we’re pushing it up. We

were hoping to switch around our lineups at the Metea Valley Quad between opponents, but weather has not been our friend this year,” Parr said. “We’ll get there.”

On Monday, Oswego lost to IMSA 6-1. Oswego will travel to Oswego East on Thursday before entering the Rosary Invite on Saturday. Match play next week includes Kaneland, Plainfield South and Yorkville before the Oswego Invite on Sept. 24.

Seniors show experience vs. Tigers Behrends, Manzella help Panthers notch their first SPC win

In Thursday’s overtime tiebreaker set between Southwest Prairie Conference opponents, it came down to Oswego’s experience over Plainfield North’s youth.

The visiting Oswego girls volleyball team took advantage of a front-row error on North to put Oswego ahead, 26-25. On match point, North junior Natalie Sullivan set the ball for an apparent tip kill from the outside hitter. In a battle at the net with Oswego’s front row, a North player fell to the ground and rolled under the net. The line violation clinched Oswego’s victory, 25-21, 23-25, 27-25.

Oswego senior outside hitter Holly Behrends marked the win as a sign of progress the Panthers squad has made after falling to Rosary and Plainfield Central the previous week.

“We showed improvement in those games [last week] so this is good for it to pay off,” Behrends said. “They had an idea what we were going to do and we had an idea what they were going to do, so it was about execution.”

Libero Casey Slezak aced her serve to put the Tigers ahead by two, and outside hitter Amy Stumpf (10 kills) and middle Madeline Dieter closed out the set with two big points in the 25-23 victory.

“We had a little down time since Rosary into conference, so we’re trying to get back into the swing of things,” Oswego coach Matt Slechta said. “We’re still tweaking little things and playing around with a few things. Now it’s just trying to get comfortable with everyone who is on the court.”

North jumped to a 7-1 lead in Set 3, which promoted Slechta to call a timeout just three points into the game.

The Panthers recovered and clawed back to create a one-point game behind consecutive ace serves by Ally Manzella, 13-12. Behrends knocked down a pair of kills to push Oswego ahead, 15-14.

Stumpf’s kill gave North a late 2322 lead, but Manzella and Behrends scored back-to-back points and Marshall called a timeout.

Stumpf came through again to tie the score at 24, but two final errors sealed the Tigers’ fate.

“Serving aggressive really does help a lot, especially because I tend to serve the ball out a lot, so taking a couple steps back always helps me,” Manzella said. “As soon as we got some aces, our whole team just gained more confidence. It’s nice to reset and continue pushing through the game.”

Co-op team knocks off Plainfield to win L-Way Invite White, Kraus and Cooper pick up 1st-place finishes in individual competition

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Oswego-Oswego East co-op girls swimming and diving team got its first look at a six-team invite and came away with eight event wins and a team championship at the Lincoln-Way Central Invite.

Last Saturday, Oswego racked up 277 points to edge out the Plainfield coop team (269) while host Lincoln-Way Central (184) finished a distant third.

The win came after an 0-3 start to the dual season.

“We’re not at a good spot. We’re 0-3, starting out losing to Neuqua, Rosary and Waubonsie,” Oswego coach Deryl Leubner said.

“We’ve got a lot of areas of improvement that we have to make,” Leubner said. “We’ve got top talent, but we just have to get the second and third swimmers going. We won eight events against Neuqua – and there’s only 12 total – and we won nine against Waubonsie, and we lost by 20 points. They’re getting second, third and fourth on us.”

Juniors Georgia White and Mari Kraus both won a pair of individual events and were part of two winning relays while freshman Grace Cooper won two individual events, had one runner-up finish and was part of a top relay to help lead Oswego.

Oswego opened the invite by winning the 200-yard medley relay behind

the efforts of Emily Giles, Kraus, Riley Evans and Cooper, clocking in at 1:53.76.

White won the 200 free in 1:57.58 and later turned in a top time in the 100 free at 53.54 seconds and Kraus won the 200 IM in 2:10.01. Cooper was the top finisher in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.35) and was runner-up in the 50 free (24.56).

Giles won the 500 free in 5:23.43.

Cooper, Megan Norris, White and Kraus teamed up to win the 200 free relay with a finish in 1:40.81, and in the 100 backstroke, Kraus (59.52) and Giles (1:01.99) paired up for a one-two finish in the event to score 29 points for Oswego.

Oswego ended the day with a runner-up finish in the 400 relay, with Giles, Evans, Kailyn Schramm and White turning in a time of 3:47.27.

“Our team is ranked fourth right

now in state. We have a lot of kids who are going to do a lot of things at the state meet, but we have to build out our conference lineup,” Leubner said.

“We’re excited about Grace. Grace, Mari and Georgia, and Alyssa Shugarman, who was on a recruiting trip this weekend, and Emily Giles are our top group that will do a lot of the heavy lifting for us. We’re expecting a lot out of those guys.”

Oswego will return to dual meet action against Plainfield on Sept. 27 and will face its next season milestone on Oct. 1 at the Evanston Invite.

“We get in a flat spot in the middle of our schedule. We started out with three of the top 10 teams in the state in the first 10 days, so we have to be up early. I’d like us to be good on Saturdays,” Leubner said. “We want to see what we can do on Saturdays.”

PREP FOOTBALL: OSWEGO EAST 71, JOLIET CENTRAL 0

Ivory Kelly-Martin Oswego East senior running back Banks (9-for-16, 164 yards, 4 TDs) tossed four touchdown passes before halftime, connecting with Ivory Kelly-Martin for a 20-yard score on the opening drive before locking in on Stephon Harris for a 12-yard touchdown. Banks found Kelly-Martin for a 23-yard score to put the Wolves up 28-0 and then went back to Harris for the next touchdown – this time from 41 yards out.

“As we get further into the season, we’re going to open up our playbook.

The first few games we kept things a little vanilla with Ivory running the ball, but with this being our third game and getting into the meat of our schedule we want to make sure we have things in place later down the line,” Banks said.

Oswego East intercepted quarterback Zach Wisneski twice, which set up a pair of 7-yard touchdown runs by Kelly-Martin (9 carries, 98 yards). Kelly-Martin added three catches for an additional 81 yards. He racked up 179 yards of total offense for four touchdowns, and with Oswego East holding a 58-0 halftime lead, Kelly-Martin and most of the Wolves starters did not play in the second half for the second straight week. Oswego East has scored 168 points in its first three games.

“Our offense has been popping the last few weeks and our O-line has been blocking well; no complaining from me,” Kelly-Martin said. “We want to get off strong and we want to score first to put that intimidation into the other team. When we get that momentum going, it gives us that extra push.”

Noah Jackson made a big quarterback sack on third and long, Devin Aguilar had the first interception of the game at the Joliet Central 7, and Jackson O’Reilly snagged the second interception with 2:36 to play in the first half. Special teams even added to the highlight reel when Colin O’Reilly got his hands on a punt, and Jackson O’Reilly picked up the fumbled ball and returned it across the goal line for another Wolves score.

Joliet Central was held to 17 total yards of offense in the first half.

Oswego East’s Rashawn Dawson-Anderson scored on a 2-yard plunge with 3:58 to play in the third quarter, and Jackson Piatek scored on a 40-yard quarterback keeper with 4:50 to play in the final period.

“Obviously, they’re a very talented team and we knew that,” Joliet Central coach Brett Boyter said of Oswego East. “We challenged our guys to rise up. We’ll look at film and see if we’re making mistakes or if they’re just that much better than us, but we knew the quality of opponent we were going to play here. We just didn’t get much going our way in the first half.”

Oswego East will travel to Plainfield South (2-1) on Sept. 16 for a Week 4 battle with the Cougars, who come off of a 14-12 win over Plainfield Central on Friday.

“We’ve got a lot of guys on our team that played last year and understand the defeat after losing a close game to Oswego and another to Plainfield North, and losing to Geneva in the playoffs. I think that has made us hungry for more success,” LeBlanc said.

“We still have a long way to go, and hopefully we can continue to build off these successes.”

Oswego East cruises past Yorkville; Panthers up next

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Despite picking up a 6-1 win at Yorkville on Monday, Oswego East girls tennis coach Pete Conrad would like to see a redo on the court.

Oswego East’s No. 1 doubles team of Annie Carmody and Keertana Kota lost their first set 2-6 to Yorkville’s Bri Pickering and Sam Keane, and were rallying in the second set in a 6-6, won the tiebreaker 7-3 and took a 7-6 set win when an overhead shot by Oswego East hit Pickering in the face.

Pickering was unable to continue play and Yorkville was forced to retire the match. Oswego East finished with a 6-1 non-conference victory over the Foxes.

“We were on our way to a comeback in a second set tiebreaker. Realistically I feel better calling the win 5-1, because you don’t know what could have happened in that

second set,” Conrad said. “It was too tight and I’d like to replay that one.”

Mary Weber won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Simran Singh won 6-1, 6-0 at third singles.

In doubles play, Angel Javier and Ravina Shah won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, Nitya Chagoor and Kijana Harlow won 6-0, 6-0 at third doubles and Payton Dude and Mackenzie Knudson won 6-0, 6-0 at fourth doubles.

Oswego East will continue the busy week hosting Oswego on Thursday before entering the Hawk Invite at Maine South on Saturday “At this point, we’re not even quite halfway through, but there’s some truth to the fact that if they haven’t figured some of these things out, it’s not going to happen this year. They just have to get out there and implement what we’ve been working on,” Conrad said.

“We have a pretty exciting week.”

OSWEGO – The Oswego East football team knows what it’s like to be on Joliet Central’s sideline.

In their 11-year history, the Wolves have just two winning seasons and too many shutout losses to count on two hands. Oswego East came into Friday’s Week 3 game with Joliet Central hungry, scoring on its first two possessions before turning two interceptions and a blocked punt into three more touchdowns.

Oswego East (3-0) built a 58-0 halftime lead over the Steelmen (0-3) and added one in the third quarter and an additional score in the fourth for a school-record 71 points, while the defense preserved the shutout.

“We talked about scoring every time we had the ball – we punted once – and that’s one of our main goals,” Oswego East coach Tyson LeBlanc said.

“The thing we’re focusing on is that it’s a long season. It’s only going to get tougher and there are quality teams still left on our schedule. We can’t start to get too happy about the way we’re playing, because there’s still things to improve.”

DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE Panthers edge Tigers in hard-fought Southwest Prairie Conference game

By JEFF DE GRAW sports@kendallcountynow.com On Saturday afternoon, what was expected to be a low scoring game between Oswego and Joliet West was exactly as advertised.x After stopping West on the opening drive of the game, Oswego marched 81 yards in 17 plays, consuming 8:30 on the clock, as Anthony Grimes scored from 1 yard out to earn a hard-fought 7-3 victory over the Tigers in a Southwest Prairie Conference tilt.

Neither team could get anything established offensively, mostly due to great defensive efforts by both teams.

The Panthers (3-0) had drives of 11 and nine plays in the first half, but the West (1-2) defense held them at bay and stopped both drives on fourth down situations.

After the nine-play drive stop by West, the Tigers took over on their own 23-yard line with 2:08 left in the half. Sophomore quarterback Jaxon Aubry engineered an 11-play drive that included nine passes, but stalled at the Oswego 14-yard line. After a five-yard penalty on West, Matthew Prieboy hit a 36-yard field goal to end the half and the scoring in the game.

“Credit the West defense for how they played,” Oswego coach Brian Cooney said. “But this one feels like a loss; we will take 3-0, but we will prepare this week like we are 2-1.

“We came out flat and complacent and that goes into the preparation during the week. We have to teach how to win. We have a motto – separation in the preparation. We didn’t prepare this week. We challenge the kids to come out hot, ready to play and that first drive was great, then we just lost it mentally on offense. The penalties and dumb mistakes. That has to change.”

West could never get a running game established against the big front of the Panthers. Aubry was 14 of 36 passing for 147 yards, but also had two interceptions.

“I hate losing, especially in these tight games, but we are right there,” West coach Jason Aubry said.

“We are very close. Our defense again stepped up and played very, very well.

Offensively, we started to move the ball a little bit, and then we had errors.

We never got the running game established, which would have opened up the pass even more. We have a fairly young offense.

“Kevon Dorris made a couple of really nice catches, and then there were a few times the ball just bounced off his hands. We have young guys, but there is a time in a season where you can’t blame it on young guys anymore.

Yeah, they are sophomores – but at this point in the season, we should be rolling, and I think we are getting to that point.”

West forced Oswego into three second-half turnovers as Andrew Smith intercepted a pass, with Robert Ford and Julius Garrett recovering Panther fumbles but could not take advantage of the situation.

After the Garrett fumble recovery, West put together one last drive with 6:15 remaining. It was the longest drive of the second half by either team – eight plays. But Oswego held on a fourth and five and ran out the clock.

Oswego was led by senior running back Drew White, as he rushed for 130 yards on 30 carries.

“This was a tough game,” White said. “To be honest, I don’t think we

expected them [West] to be that good.

I know we can play better. We have to learn to keep the momentum going, even when the mistakes happen.”

Oswego’s Nick Marra added 56 yards on the ground with 10 carries, and quarterback Levi Olson was 5-of15 for 103 yards. His big target was senior Elliot Pipkin, who had four receptions for 98 yards. Seniors Kyle Keeton and Matt Maruna had the two second-half interceptions that stopped Tiger drives.

Oswego returns home to host Plainfield East on Friday at 7 p.m. The Bengals (2-1) come off a 42-10 loss to Minooka in Week 3.
