Oswego creates TIF district Development tool gets unanimous village board vote

By ERIKA WURST news@kendallcountynow.com Oswego Village Board members voted unanimously Tuesday evening to officially designate the village’s downtown area as a tax increment financing district (TIF).

The vote comes after more than a year of discussions regarding the proposed TIF district, which board members hope will revitalize the under-utilized areas of downtown near Main and Washington Streets in the TIF’s Redevelopment Project Area.

“Thank you all for your votes tonight,” Village President Gail Johnson said following the passage of three necessary ordinances. “This TIF district has been 15 long months coming – probably longer than that for some of us – and it culminated tonight with a unanimous vote, so I thank you.”

But, not everyone has been pleased about the new funding option. Residents concerned about the TIF’s effect showed up in droves at last month’s public hearing regarding the proposed designation.

Many had questions about what the TIF would mean for property owners within the TIF district, and what it would mean for their own taxes.

Those concerns seemed to be put to rest, as Tuesday night’s audience was slim, and just a handful of residents were on hand to witness the TIF’s passage.

“It’s a huge step forward in my book,” Johnson said of the vote. “I think we’re going to see some amazing things happen in the downtown area in the next few years. This was step one, so I thank you all for the continued support.”

The goal of the TIF district is to help restore growth in areas going though economic change, or to revitalize currently designated parts of town. It allows cities and villages to make im-

provements they need, like new roads or new sewers, to attract businesses or help existing businesses expand, without tapping into general funds or raising taxes.

Board members have stressed their belief in how important these improvements will be for the downtown area.

Property taxes collected on properties included in the TIF district at the time of its designation continue to be distributed to the school districts, county, community college and all other taxing districts as normal. Only property taxes generated by the incremental increase in the value of these properties after that time are available for use by the TIF district.

Board members have been talking about the designation for years, and seemed pleased to have finally made headway on the cause.

“I’ve been waiting three and a half years to say ‘Yes!’” Board member Pam Parr said enthusiastically after casting her votes.

Board member Luis Perez, who attended the meeting electronically while out of the state on business, also cast “yes” votes on Tuesday evening.

“Congratulations on what is going to be an outstanding downtown redevelopment plan,” he said. “I can’t wait to negotiate on behalf of this great village on all of the things that are coming. So, kudos. Thank you.”

The TIF district is the first to be approved by the village board. The village now joins numerous other area municipalities to designate TIF districts to help spur business development. Those other municipalities include Montgomery, Yorkville, Aurora and Naperville.

Oswego Public Library takes inventory of trees on site, weighs keeping vintage barn

Tamblyn also said trustees decided a building constructed in 1951, called a cottage, chicken coop, and carriage house, has no value and should be removed from the property.

Oswego Historical Preservation Commission and Oswegoland Heritage Association members toured the building and said it was not worth saving, so library trustees last week voted to have the Oswego Fire Department use the building for training purposes.

From the time of its purchase until recently, area residents have voiced opposition to the purchase, stating this was not how the library district should use its money.

One resident noted that this purchase would remove $6,000 a year in property taxes paid to all agencies in the village and library district.

However, if the property had been sold to a private developer, residences could have been constructed on the land, which would have generated additional students for School District 308.

International effort helps catch alleged child rapist Suspect was attempting to fly to Australia from Japan when captured

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Oswego police arrested an Arkansas man at O’Hare International Airport on Aug. 31 in connection with an investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted an Oswego boy, police said.

The investigation involved a joint effort by Oswego police, the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of Homeland Secu-

rity, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, and authorities from Japan and Australia as well as INTERPOL, the International Criminal Police Organization, according to Oswego police.

Police said Oswego detectives arrested Alexander S. Bowers, 28, of the 0-100 block of Crape Myrtle Place in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the airport at 5:45 p.m. Aug. Alexander S. 31 after his arrival on a flight from Tokyo.

Bowers Bowers was charged with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony, Oswego police said.

“Bowers is alleged to have had ongoing sexual contact with a male juvenile at an Oswego residence over a span of approximately four years, starting in 2008 when the victim was 9 years old and Bowers was 20 years old,” a release from the Oswego police stated.

Oswego police said the victim’s parents reported the contact to them once they learned of it this past March.

Police determined that Bowers had relocated to Arkansas, and on Aug. 23, Oswego detectives learned that he had traveled to Japan and was attempting to travel to Australia, police said.

“Oswego detectives notified ICE/ Homeland Security Investigations who notified Australian authorities of the investigation,” the Oswego police stated. “Australian authorities revoked

Bowers’ Australian travel visa that same day.”

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the six felony charges against Bowers and a Kendall County judge issued a warrant for his arrest with a $1 million bond the following day, police said.

Oswego detectives notified INTERPOL of the warrant and Bowers was detained by Japanese authorities on Tuesday, Oswego police said.

Japanese authorities arranged to have Bowers returned to the U.S., and when he arrived at the airport he was taken into custody by Oswego detectives, transported to the Oswego police station, booked, processed and taken to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville pending court, police said.

A near-three acre parcel of land along North Street purchased late last year by the Oswego Public Library District may become a nature preserve.

Meanwhile, a small three-story barn that sits on the property just west of Route 25 could be preserved, Terry Tamblyn, library district board secretary, said at Wednesday’s board meeting.

The board had met previously in special session Aug. 3 to discuss the use of the land.

The parcel, purchased at a cost of $175,000, sits directly across the Waubonsie Creek from the library district’s Oswego Campus library.

No definite use for the barn has yet been determined so, for now, it has been emptied of all contents, mothballed and locked up until the trustees decide what to do with it, Tamblyn said at Wednesday’s meeting.

An inventory of all the trees on the wooded property has also been completed.

Sarah Skilton, district director, told trustees that the numerous trees on the site include two sugar maples and two red maples – varieties that should be saved. She could not say how many trees are on the site or what varieties they are. But Skilton said she met with an arborist at the site to inspect the trees and was told the chains around some of the trees could be removed, dead branches removed and the trees salvaged.

She said the arborist also suggested that the district could use the sugar maple trees to show residents how sap is collected in the spring and turned into maple syrup.

Skilton also suggested that they could have a collection of trees and prepare a map identifying all the trees on the site for visitors.

Tamblyn suggested that with the small barn preserved, Oswego could

become a community known for its vintage or urban barns, like Batavia is known for the many windmill manufacturers that were located there.

He said there used to be more than 30 such barns in Oswego, but only 11 still exist today.

Tamblyn said the previous owner of the land first offered it to the village of Oswego as well as other local government agencies in July 2014.

Tamblyn said at an earlier meeting that when no one else expressed an interest in purchasing the property, late last year the board decided “it would be in the library district’s long-term, best interest to own the property.”

“As we have stated in the past, before we do anything with the property, it will be discussed in open library board meetings and we will receive input from the community,” he said at a previous board meeting.

During 2014 and 2015, library officials began negotiating with the owner about purchasing the property that the owner said was valued at $245,000 to $300,000.

Waubonsee College marks first 50 years This month Waubonsee Community College is beginning a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Voters in portions of Kendall, Kane, Will and LaSalle counties approved the establishment of the college district in a referendum in July 1966 and the following year the college offered its first classes in an abandoned Jewel store on River Street in downtown Aurora.

Since that time the college has continued to grow and as of this writing has served more than 290,000 students – including 33,568 degree and certificate earners – over the past half century.

Waubonsee has some especially strong ties to Kendall County. Nearly

30,000 of the college’s students have or currently reside in Kendall County.

According to enrollment figures provided by Waubonsee, just over 10,000 of the college’s students have come Oswego, 7,900 from Montgomery, 6,500 from Yorkville, 4,000 from Plano and 3,200 from Sandwich.

In the college’s earliest years, the college offered evening classes in county high schools, including Oswego and Yorkville.

The county has also been home to some of the college’s most instrumental advocates and leaders, including longtime Collage Board President Richard Dickson of Yorkville and the late Richard Akerlow, a member of the college’s founding board of trustees.

athletic director and physical education department chairman, and Dr. Helen Baker, founding director of the college’s nursing education program, both live in Oswego.

Today, community colleges are widely accepted as necessary public institutions. But it’s important to remember that back in the 1960s not everyone saw the need for or understood the role community colleges could play in advancing the educational opportunities of students after high school. Fortunately for today’s residents of Waubonsee’s district, there were enough residents who did support the early efforts to establish the college.

Over the past five decades the college has become an integral part of

Kendall County and the other communities it serves.

Go into just about any business or public institution in Kendall County today and you’ll likely find someone who has at some point in their life attended a class, earned a degree or a certificate, or participated in a program offered by Waubonsee. Those people have used the knowledge and the skills they learned to improve their own lives, their families, their businesses and the community at large.

The end result is that Kendall County and the rest of the college district is in a much better place today because those voters said “yes” on that July 1966 referendum to establish a community college district.

Matteson: Another not entirely honest governor People really liked Joel Matteson.

In fact, the early Kendall County settler was so likable that he was eventually elected governor of Illinois, where he did a good job by all accounts, only to be disgraced after leaving office.

Matteson was typical of many of the men who moved west to the Illinois frontier in the 1830s. Born in Watertown, New York, on Aug. 8, 1808, Matteson worked as a teacher and businessman before moving to South Carolina in 1831. There, he became a successful railroad construction foreman.

But in the early 1830s, the Illinois frontier was the place where ambitious men were making their marks.

So in 1834, Matteson moved to Illinois, possibly drawn to the growing state by the lure of the creation of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, proposed to open navigation between Lake Michigan and the Illinois River.

The canal’s promoters saw it as a future economic growth engine for Illinois, and their vision wasn’t far off the mark. As early as 1673, it had been suggested that a canal could easily connect Lake Michigan with the Illinois River, making a direct connection between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River system. To that end, in 1816, the U.S. Government signed a treaty with Indian tribes of northern Illinois that included the cession of a canal corridor 10 miles on either side of the Chicago-DesPlaines-Illinois river system, all the way from

Matteson arrived in Kendall County in 1834. He decided to temporarily partner with Eli Gleason, Jeremiah Cole, Dr. O.J. Corbin and Daniel Lamb to carve their own homesteads out of Illinois’ frontier land. The group built a log cabin about a mile north of Chester House’s claim, which was in Section 15 of what would one day become Kendall County’s Seward Township.

The men spent the winter of 1834-35 cutting timber with which to build their own cabins and fence off claims.

In 1835 all the men, with the exception of Dr. Corbin, bought land from the government, including Matteson’s 1,189 acres in Sections 9, 10, 15, 23, and 26 of Seward Township. All of it was well-watered by AuSable Creek.

It was an interesting group that worked through that winter of 1834.

Dr. Corbin became a well-known physician in Plainfield. Jeremiah Cole was one of Kendall County’s first county board members and went on to hold a number of other county offices.

Gleason became a solid citizen and well-known Kendall County farmer, as did Lamb.

during Matteson’s term was passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, introduced into the U.S. Senate by Sen. Stephen A. Douglas, an Illinois Democrat.

The bill, which eliminated the Missouri Compromise limiting the spread of slavery into new states, eventually passed. But debate in Illinois even after the bill’s passage was intense, with Douglas coming in for sharp criticism from the state’s growing numbers of anti-slavery residents.

Protecting privacy

To the Editor: Increasing reports of Americans suffering from identify theft demonstrate the vulnerability of our personal information.

I recently had a conversation with a family from Will County who recounted to me the horrific story of how it took months to recover their life savings stolen by an identify thief. In 2014, a colleague of mine in the U.S. House, Jim Renacci (OH-16), and his wife were also victims of identity theft.

Americans are compelled to surrender personal information to the government for a variety of reasons, including applying for a job and filling out tax forms.

Unfortunately, the government does not always prioritize the safety of your valuable, private information.

One such case is home mortgage disclosure. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) requires that certain personal information – such as credit scores – be disclosed online when applying for a home mortgage. The CFPB says the information is anonymous, but skilled thieves can connect the dots between potential homeowners and their information, putting their finances at risk.

In order to improve the financial security of Americans, I introduced the Homeowner Information Privacy Protection Act (H.R. 4993) to eliminate the gap in private data security for Americans that apply for mortgages. When you have four consecutive days of warm, sunny weather at the same time Oswego’s PrairieFest is taking place, you can expect a successful event.

And successful it was, Kristie Vest, special events supervisor, told Oswegoland Park District board members last week.

“Two of the bands created our greatest buzz for the festival,” she said.

They included the Marshall Tucker Band that was attended by 14,000 spectators, and Smashmouth that brought in 20,000 people. Lucky Boys Confusion also attracted a large audience, she added.

Vest noted that for the first time, they heard some comments from frustrated spectators about the language of one singer.

“These concert-goers reflected our feelings that Smashmouth’s lead singer was disrespectful of the family-friendly atmosphere we create.

Smashmouth had great music but we believe acceptable language and a great sound are not mutually exclusive,” she said.

Vest said the district’s contracts with performers specify that they expect appropriate language and actions.

She said that in 30 years of hosting music at PrairieFest and numerous other park district events, offensive language has never been a concern, so steps are being taken to see it will not happen in the future even though it is

Vest said they also are considering changes in their entertainment. They had always offered a small number of large acts rather than many small acts, but have noticed that the small acts don’t seem to attract as many patrons.

This year they featured the All American Lumberjack Show which along with other large groups, drew large audiences throughout the weekend.

“With an attractive feature, we can eliminate those smaller acts such as clowns, jugglers, and magicians that don’t always attract a crowd,” she said adding that they are exploring large entertainment features for the 2017 PrairieFest.

Vest said she had a crowd of about 20,000 people when Smashmouth performed. She knew there were some people who were not happy with the singer’s language. But she also was aware that if she stopped the band from playing she would have a larger group of unhappy patrons. So she talked to the

singer after the event.

She saw this as an unfortunate situation she does not expect to see again.

Vest said she notified people who had hired the group to play later in the season and told them the singer‘s language was not appropriate for families.

This resulted in her receiving a call and an apology from the Smashmouth singer, she said.

Vest said they developed an emergency action plan last year to use a nearby school in case of weather evacuation, but found it unnecessary this year. “But we were ready and will be ready in the future,” she said.

They learned of one other situation this year. Many parents used Wilmette Street as a drop-off point for their children, causing heavy traffic on this dead-end street. This year they instituted the PrairieFest Lift Lane along the Public Works Building which took traffic off the one-way street all weekend.

And one more service was provided this year at the end of their big nights.

Uber drivers were on hand to pick up passengers who decided not to drive home for whatever reason.

“The bands, weather and the Lumberjacks were all great contributors to a successful festival. The park district expected to net $3,000 but because of these factors we will realize more than $6,000,” Vest said.

School board public forum Monday in Oswego

School District 308 Board of Education will host a public forum on Monday, Sept. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thompson Junior High School located at 440 Boulder Hill Pass in Oswego.

The event will be the first of two planned public forums to give parents and community members an opportunity to share input, comments, issues and concerns with the district and discuss the successes and challenges in school buildings. The second forum will be held Jan. 23.

MEDC to host golf outing

The Montgomery Economic Development Corporation is hosting its annual golf outing on Sept. 15 at Blackberry Oaks Golf Course, 2245 Kennedy Road, Bristol. Registration will be from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., with a shotgun start promptly at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend.

All golfers will receive a sleeve of golf balls, and two special contest holes will be sponsored by Earthmovers Credit Union and the Montgomery Rotary Club. The Boulder Hill and Oswego Antique Study Group will meet Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 12:30 p.m. in the home of Kay Hatcher.

The program will be Victorian painted glass eggs, presented by Hatcher. She will share her knowledge of this unique American craft, and provide numerous examples for club members to examine and discuss. Members will also bring items they have from their own personal milk glass and Easter collections to share.

The study group has met continuously since its founding in 1964, with education programs provided at each meeting by members or guest speakers.

The program for October will feature vintage kitchen memorabilia and the advertising jingles that boosted their sales.

Thimbles will be the topic of November’s meeting. A Secret Santa vintage gift exchange will highlight the December Christmas potluck.

Barrett served as a Corpsman in Vietnam and Desert Storm and retired from the Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer after 23 years of service. His war decorations include the Purple Heart. Barrett was also post commander for Oswego American Legion Post 675 for many years and worked as the superintendent for the Kendall County Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC), where he fulfilled his passion for helping other veterans. After a question-and-answer session with the media, Hultgren also reflected on his choice for president in the November election: Donald Trump.

Before the Republican National Convention, he said he was “warming” to Trump but was not committed to voting for him.

“To me, it’s a binary choice,” he said. “There’s two choices: It’s Hillary Clinton, it’s Donald Trump. I’m not supporting Hillary; I’m not going to do anything to help her. I don’t trust her.

I think everything she’s doing is about

herself and her foundation and her family and her friends. So, very frustrating to me. New stuff every single day, more untruth, more things that she said that are just not true. So, I’m not going to support her; my choice is I’m going to support Trump. Do I agree with him on everything? No, I don’t. But I also realize, I don’t know if there’s any other candidate, other than myself, that I agree with all the time.

And that’s a healthy process. Give and take, hopefully we’ll work through some of that stuff. I think he’s getting better on some things.”

Referring to the Republican nominee for vice president, Hultgren said, “I really like Mike Pence, I think he’s a great choice for vice president. I really like the process Trump is going through of how he’s going to select Supreme Court justices. To me, that’s hugely important, maybe the most important thing this president is going to do, whoever it is, is Supreme Court picks. It will be at least two, maybe three, maybe four Supreme Court justices, and I really respect the process that he’s going through much more than Hillary Clinton. So, just in those two reasons, that’s enough for me to vote for Donald Trump.”

Teens attend Aurora police forum OSWEGO LEDGER Students from Oswego and Oswego East high schools joined with students from other area high schools in a student-police forum called “Taking Responsibility and Building Relationships” held Thursday at North Island Center in downtown Aurora.

About 100 students, school administrators and Aurora police attended the two-hour evening session co-sponsored by the city of Aurora and the APD. The forum opened with a national overview by Brandon Kooi, a criminal justice professor at Aurora University, followed by comments by APD Chief Kristen Ziman. Then Kooi led a largegroup discussion and APD school

resource officers led small-group discussions before a recap of discussions, common points of interest and announcements of school initiatives for the coming semester and year.

The forum’s goal was to host a diverse group – in terms of race, gender and grade level – of Aurora-area students to discuss national issues and address them at the local level. Clayton Muhammad, Aurora community relations director, moderated for Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner, who was scheduled but unable to attend. In addition to the two Oswego high schools, students attended from East Aurora, West Aurora, Metea Valley, Waubonsie Valley, Neuqua Valley and the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren visited the Casey’s General Store on Route 34 in Plano on Aug. 31 as part of a campaign organized by a convenience store trade association.

Hultgren, R-Plano, toured the gas station and kitchen area of the store and worked the counter, serving a couple customers, while talking with representatives of Casey’s about their concerns and issues.

Talking with the media, Hultgren also voiced support for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. “... My choice is I’m going to support Trump,” Hultgren said.

The Arlington, Va.-based National Association of Convenience Stores, or NACS, organized the event, called an NACS In Store.

“This is something I love to do,

to get out and see what’s going on in the community, learn about different businesses, hearing from employees,” Hultgren said. “We heard from [NACS] that this is a program they have to allow congressmen to come in and tour, talk to some management but also with local staff, get a chance to serve some customers. And hear what’s working well, what are some of their frustrations that they’re facing, what are the challenges a store like this has to run, to be competitive, to really have what customers want and need.”

Hultgren said the store is a local employer and a benefit to the community.

“I think they employ 20 or 30 people here, so that’s a big impact in a community like Plano,” he said. “So grateful that they’re here and that they’re growing.”

Hultgren said he hears from local businesses he visits about the number of government regulations the businesses face, and that the Casey’s owners have similar issues.

“Some common themes are frustration with the number of regulations, especially something like this where they try and be a one-stop shop, the challenges, all the labeling,” he said. “It might be that they have to have eight

Uber driver from Oswego charged with credit card theft

Oswego police have arrested an Uber driver following a two-month investigation into allegations he unlawfully used a passenger’s credit cards.

Farzad Khamissi, 37, of the 400 block of Dancer Lane in Oswego is charged with four counts of unlawful use of a credit card, a Class 4 felony.

A victim reported to Oswego police June 5 that she had used the Uber ride service the previous morning in Geneva and believed she left her cellphone and credit cards in the backseat of the vehicle, police said.

“The Uber driver, Khamissi, is alleged to have used the credit cards to make unauthorized charges at several businesses in Oswego, totaling over $500,” police said.

A warrant was issued for Khamissi’s arrest on July 28 with a $10,000 Farzad bond, and Khamissi Khamissi turned himself in on Aug. 9, police said. Khamissi “was booked and processed at the Oswego Police Department and released on bond pending court,” police said.

2 at 6:14 p.m. Police identified the injured as Jenna H. Whiting, 16, of the 30th block of Larkspur Lane, Bristol, and McKenna M. Lubbers, 16, of the 2100 block of Kingsmill Drive, Yorkville.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS One arrested in fight County sheriff’s deputies and police from multiple jurisdictions responded to a fight in progress at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Harbor Drive in Oswego Township on Sept. 4 at 4:45 a.m. Police said when they arrived at the scene they observed at least seven to eight people involved in an altercation outside the apartments. Police arrested Robert William Moore, 28, of Harbor Drive, on a charge of battery. Police said the incident remains under investigation with additional charges pending.

Motorcyclists injured A Sandwich resident, James M. Castleton, 44, of the 30th block of Hummingbird Court, was injured when he lost control of his motorcycle while driving on Rogers Road at Whitfield Road in Millbrook on Sept. 2 at 5:47 p.m., according to county sheriff’s reports. Police said Castleton was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.

According to police, Castleton lost control of his motorcycle as he attempted to avoid a vehicle traveling westbound into his lane.

Hampton Road domestic Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic incident at a residence in the 100 block of Hampton Road, Boulder Hill, on Sept. 3 at 2:50 a.m. Police said they determined some individuals at the residence had been involved in a mutual pushing and grabbing altercation, but were unhurt in the incident. Oswego East Varsity: On Sept. 1, the Wolves (5-4) defeated Bolingbrook 2510, 25-14. Meghan Delaney had six kills and four aces, Sarah Schultz had four kills and three digs and Gabby Campbell had three kills and a block.

Morgan Bordwine made three ace serves while Allie Bertrand had five digs and Hannah Borneman and Katie Ayers made six assists each. On Aug. 31, the Wolves fell to West Aurora, 1625, 14-25. Schultz had six kills and Borneman made six assists.

FOOTBALL

Oswego Freshman: The Panther A team dropped its second game of the year, falling to Plainfield North 55-28 last Saturday.

The host Tigers jumped out to a halftime lead of 28-0, and the Panthers battled through the second half to put points on the board. The Panthers scored all four of their scores on the ground with two tallied by Connor Laird and one each from Aiden Avalos and Giovanni Carig. Defensively Oswego was led by Aric Nieves with 14 total tackles.

The Oswego B team won 17-6. Liam Bailey ran for a score and Nick Brazen had a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown. On special teams, Nico Goodwin score for Oswego with a 35yard field goal, assisted by a great job on the hold by Joey Nieseman.

CROSS COUNTRY

Oswego Varsity Girls: The Panthers took second at the Racine Horlick Rebel Invitational in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Saturday with a total of 109 points.

Waukesha West won with 59 points.

Varsity demonstrated outstanding pack running with only 11 seconds between the 2-5 runners.

Junior Grace Pagone took the lead with a second-place finish with a time of 15:09. She was followed by a good pack: sophomore Sydney Luchyn (16:18), junior Megan Berg (16:24), sophomore Caitlin Guist (16:25), and sophomore Jaycie Simon (16:29).

Oswego Varsity Boys: Oswego won the 25-team Racine Horlick Rebel Invitational in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Saturday with a total of 109 points.

Liberty­v ille was second at 107 and Oconomowoc third (136).

Bennett Peterson was fourth overall (16:10) followed by Mitch Bradford in 18th (16:51), Brandon Nelson in 21st

place (16:53) and Erik Kivela in 22nd (16:53) while Brandon Pope was 33rd (17:14) to complete the scoring five.

Oswego JV Girls: The Panthers made their racing debut at the Racine Horlick Rebel Invitational in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Saturday. The JV girls raced hard for 2.5 miles and the results showed, scoring a low 32 points for a first place finish.

Leading the race was senior Megan Choi with a time of 16:43, followed by senior Kacie Moran in second (17:15), and freshmen Maddie Etheridge in third (17:15).

Junior Isabelle Santiago came in seventh with a time of 17:37.

Oswego East Varsity Girls: For the first time in school history, the Wolves won the varsity, frosh/soph, and open races at the same invite – sweeping the TF South Rich Dust Invite.

The Wolves topped the standings and edged out Lincoln-Way Central, 3740. Kendra Standish (18:58) was third overall followed by Alexis Henz in fifth (19:09), Abby Flammersfeld in seventh (19:22), Amanda Bonczkowski in 10th (19:57) and Isabella Gyori in 12th (20:09).

Oswego East Varsity Boys: Lincoln-Way Central edged out Oswego East 33-43 in the team standings while Illiana Christian was a distant third at 80 points.

Dylan Zangri was the individual champion, clocking in at 15:17 to win the race by five seconds.

Jake Klancir was seventh (16:03), William Roeder took ninth (16:10), Chris Smith was 10th (16:15), Bradley Thornton was 21st (16:39) and Matthew Blanco was 16th (16:43).

East continues momentum with win in SPC opener Wolves take runner-up finish to Red Devil Cup, win three of last four

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com After four strong games in the annual Red Devil Cup, the Oswego East boys’ soccer team came ready to play in Tuesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference opener.

The Wolves (3-4-1) notched a 5-2 win over visiting Romeoville behind a pair of goals from Jackson Frazer as well as single goals from Ryan Aten, Michael

Waclaw and Victor Cuevas.

The victory propels Oswego East into the PepsiCo Showdown tournament over the next two weeks. The bracket was expanded for 2016, and relocated from Lyons Twp. to the Stuart Sports Complex in Montgomery. Opening day will feature 30 games on Saturday, with Oswego East taking on South Elgin at 11:30 a.m.

“We got out to a slow start, but we’re turning things around,” Oswego East coach Steve Szymanski said.

Tournament play continues Sept. 13 and Sept. 15 with championship play Sept. 25 in Chicago.

Oswego East comes out of Hinsdale Central’s Red Devil Cup with a second-place finish and a 2-1-1 record.

over Downers Grove South to reach the tournament championship game after Aten scored the game-winner. Oswego East met Morton – a team that took a Class 3A third-place state finish last year – and lost 7-0 to the Mustangs.

“We definitely made a turn for the better. We’re playing a lot better and playing more as a team,” Szymanski said. “I don’t know what it was about the first few games, but we didn’t play very well. We got pumped up for this tournament and had good success reaching the championship game. It was a tough turnaround to play Downers South at 1 p.m. and then Morton at 6, and Morton is very good. They’re ranked No. 2 in state right now. Overall, we’re playing a lot better.”

The Oswego boys golf team picked up a non-conference win against Lincoln-Way East on Tuesday, 164-167, to improve to 3-1 on the season. Kobe Taylor carded a 38, followed by Mason Lee (40), Kade Prentice (43) and Craig Schlegel (43).

Oswego continued its solid early season play with a 166-174 win over Plainfield East to move to 2-1 overall in conference play. Zach Krisch led the Panthers with a 40. Craig Schlegel, Kobe Taylor, and Mason Lee all carded 42’s.

Matt Oglivie 47, Joey Kahoun 49 Kade Prentice 49 and Tommy Falcone 50 rounded out the scoring.

Oswego Boys JV: The Panthers defeated Plainfield East 185-216 at Blackberry Oaks Golf Course.

The Panthers were led by Ryan Prusak, who shot a 45, Andrew Aagesen and Ethan Albaugh both carded 46, and Blake Ginn finished up the scoring with a 48.

On Tuesday, the team lost to Lincoln-Way East, 190-187 at Green Garden Country Club. The team was led

by Prusak, who shot a score of 43, Ginn (48), Mason Semmler (49), and Patrick Hranka (50) finished up the scoring for the Panthers.

Oswego/Oswego East Girls: The Oswego/Oswego East co-op girls golf

team shot a 190 at Heritage Bluffs, but fell to Minooka’s 175. Kiana Krahulik shot a 42 followed by Summer Hawkins (47), Emily Staples (48) and Autumn Sullivan (53).

The team defeated West Chicago behind scores from Hawkins (45), Hanna Raza (53), Cassidy Max (56) and Lauren Zalud (60).

The team took a 185-222 win over Plainfield Central at Wedgewood to move to 2-1 in conference. Krahulik (40), Hawkins (45), Sullivan (48) and Staples (52) came through with the low scores.

Panthers produce after halftime challenge

One season ago, Plainfield North snapped Oswego’s 33-game win streak in the Southwest Prairie Conference – and the Panthers did not forget.

Meeting on Friday night in the Week 2 matchup, it was a defensive battle for three and a half quarters.

During a three-minute span in the third quarter, however, Oswego produced enough offense to win with a touchdown and six more points after a Plainfield North turnover for a 12-0 win.

“You can’t win if you don’t score,” Oswego coach Brian Cooney said.

“I’m so proud of the defense. We had a cornerback [Josh Shodipo] go down throughout the week, so we pulled up a sophomore, John Luke Patterson. He played a phenomenal game. Literally, he was walking on the field to play the sophomore game and I found out our corner was not cleared to play, so I ran outside and picked up John. There’s so many stories that go into this win.

This is Oswego’s first 2-0 start under Cooney, and first since the 2006 season.

Plainfield North moves to 1-1 in the SPC race.

“We’ve always been 1-1 or 0-2, so this feels good. Hopefully we can continue to grow and develop, and get better as a team,” Cooney said. “This is not an offensive-heavy team or a defensive-heavy team. This is a true team.”

Oswego played a flat first half, when the North defense held the Panthers to 16 yards of offense and zero first downs. It ended 0-0.

The Panthers took the second half kickoff and put together a 79-yard drive on its first possession that included a pair of first down plays to put the Panthers in the end zone. Quarterback Levi Olson connected with Raymond Chmielinski for a 29-yard touchdown for a 6-0 Oswego lead with 6:09 left in the third quarter. After a 1-for-11 start, Olson went 4-for-5 for 69 yards on that drive.

“That was big,” Cooney said. “We challenged them to get back to basics,

do what you’re told to do and do what you’re taught to do. We had kids open and had opportunities, but we couldn’t capitalize in the first half. We challenged our kids to wake up. I’m glad that they rose to that challenge. That first drive coming in right out of the half and punching one in, that’s confidence.”

Plainfield North spent less than a minute on the field when Kyle Keeton intercepted Brady Miller’s throw on second down and returned the ball 24 yards to the Tigers 9. That set up Nick Marra’s touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.

“It just kind of fell in my hands,” said Keeton, who finished with two interceptions. “My guys up front just did the job. They put pressure on the quarterback and the linebackers dropped to their guys underneath, and the corner just played his man too. We really just got the job done tonight.”

The Plainfield North special teams successfully foiled both extra point attempts as Oswego led 12-0 with 5:13 left in the third quarter.

Plainfield North reached the Oswe-

go red zone three times and had two more drives stalled at the Oswego 24and 28-yard line. Tyler Hoosman had 71 yards rushing on 12 carries.

“I’d like to see us get inside (the) 20 and score,” Plainfield North coach Tim Kane said. “We’ve got to have a great plan of attack. We had too many different things going on and we didn’t execute. We have to fix that. Defensively, there’s things we need to improve. We gave up 12 points. We should have gave up zero. We didn’t get lined up right. It don’t take rocket science to figure out if we get lined up right, we might run the ball where no one is.”

Plainfield North’s best shot in the first half came late in the first quarter. Hoosman ran for a 26-yard gain to help the Tigers drive to the Oswego 24, but after three incomplete passes, the fourth was intercepted. Plainfield North’s DJ Donofrio recovered an Oswego fumble at the Panther 14, but Oswego’s Julian Bell made the interception in the end zone on the first play from scrimmage.

The Panthers will visit Joliet West (1-1) on Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.

OSWEGO BEARS ROUNDUP

Oswego Bears teams win five of six home openers OSWEGO LEDGER The Oswego Bears went 5-1 in home openers this past week.

Tiny Mites vs. Joliet Steelers: Oswego Bears Tiny Mites improve their record to 2-0 after a win against the Joliet Steelers. The determined offensive line of Taylen Taitague, Christian Herrera, Gavin Kniffin, Aaron McDonald, Austin McIntosh and Benjamin Gibson allowed Aiden Cullen to find the end zone. Aiden Wiggins, Alex Wiggins, Ben Gibson and Ken Robertson held the line against a tough Steelers offense allowing only one touchdown.

Mitey Mite vs. Stickney Wolfpack:

The Oswego Bears Mitey Mite Orange team improved to 2-0 on the season after a 39-0 win over the Stickney Wolfpack. The Bears opened the score with a 30-yard scramble by quarterback Brayden Swanson on the first offensive snap of the game. Brogan Mellow and Damien Lewandowski (two touchdowns each) and Dominic Battista (one touchdown) led the way. The defense was led by Brendan Bisgrove, Joslynn Sheets, and Jayden Kersh.

Mitey Mite vs. Rockford Titans: The Oswego Bears Mitey Mites Blue team continues to improve after a 20-0 loss

“The start for us was the better part but we are a team that we cannot afford to make many mistakes,” Romeoville coach Oliver Gibson said. “Oswego East has one heck of a back and we have to do what is called our one-eleven. We’ll have a breakdown here and here and all-of-a-sudden we get gashed.

We have the capability and talent, we just have to avoid the mistakes.”

Kelly-Martin’s 2-yard touchdown run extended the Wolves lead to 13-0 with 2:15 left in the first quarter. The Wolves’ defense then forced a quick three-and-out by the Spartans to end the first quarter and on a the first play of the second quarter Kelly-Martin ripped off a 65-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 20-0.

tans gave the ball back to Oswego East, which wasted little time as Banks connected with Harris for a 52-yard touchdown where Harris actually went over the top of the Spartans defender to make the circus catch and put the Wolves ahead, 27-0, with 8:54 remaining in the half.

“When you play against a team like Oswego East who is talented and multi-faceted you have to play assignment tight and we weren’t tonight, but we’re getting there,” Gibson said. “We knew coming into the season that the first two weeks were going to be our toughest stretch. We have to get after it because we do not want to be 0-3.”

Kelly-Martin scored on a 4-yard touchdown run for his fourth score of the night to extend the Wolves lead to 34-0 that basically put the game away with 6:44 left in the half.

Oswego East will continue SPC play on Sept. 9, hosting Joliet Central (0-2), which fell 33-7 to Minooka in Week 2.

For those keeping score, the second week encore for Oswego East senior running back Ivory Kelly-Martin was just as impressive as his first week – except he needed only half the time to do it in.

In his Oswego East home opener Friday night, the Iowa-bound Kelly-Martin rushed for 161 yards on nine carries and scored four first-half touchdowns (28, 2, 65 and 4 yards), leading the Wolves to a 48-14 victory over Southwest Prairie Conference foe Romeoville.

In two games, Kelly-Martin has 383 yards on 33 carries and has scored eight touchdowns.

His performance highlighted an impressive showing by the Oswego East offense as the Wolves found the end zone on seven of their first eight possessions and led 48-0 at the half. Oswe-

go East had 436 yards of offense in the first half while limiting the Spartans to 56.

“We said that one of our goals tonight was to score every time we had the ball and except for halftime we would have,” Oswego East coach Tyson LeBlanc said.

Oswego East (2-0) also had contributions from senior wideout Stephon Harris (three catches, 96 yards, TD) and quarterback Jaylon Banks (6 of 8, 177 yards, seven carries for 69 yards and one passing and one rushing TD) and linebacker Tahj Oliver (eight tackles, one for loss).

“Our defense has played really well the last two weeks and if we continue to give up only 14 points a week and score 48 points a game, we’ll win a lot of football games,” LeBlanc said.

TIGERS GET PAST OSWEGO

Nick Kearns makes 6 saves, but Panthers fall 1-0 in conference opener

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com After a disappointing start to the season that included four losses and just two goals scored in five games, the Panthers were hoping for a change of pace in Tuesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference opener.

Oswego out-played defending SPC champion Plainfield North in nearly every category except the one that mattered – the scoreboard. The Tigers scored in the late minutes of the first half to take a 1-0 lead and shut out the Panthers through the second half to preserve the victory on a hot, windy afternoon in Oswego.

“We made one mistake,” Oswego coach Brian Falli said. “We gave up one rebound. Looking at the stats, we out-shot them, we out-possessed them and we out-worked them and we definitely had more scoring opportunities.

We hit the post three times. We had our chances – credit to Plainfield North, they put their one away – but looking at where we’ve come over the last six games, I’m very pleased. No team has gone undefeated in conference in quite some time, so as long as we take care of our business from here on out, we’ll be OK. This is definitely huge progress from Saturday, and progress from our previous games before that.”

Oswego had an opportunity to take an early lead when Adrian Veseli attacked the goal and put up a strong possibility with 15:10 left in the first half, but Plainfield North keeper Justin Rehder hauled in his second save of the game. Plainfield North turned the tables with its own shot attempt, which Nick Anweiler rebounded in for the 1-0 Tiger lead.

Veseli had another strong shot attempt in the second half and tried again to get the ball in front of the goal on a corner kick, but Oswego could not convert either attempt. The Panthers continued to attack the Plainfield North goal through much of the second half, but nothing connected.

Although Plainfield North did not take as many shot attempts, the Tigers did have several quality tries. Oswego keeper Nick Kearns made six saves in the game, including a big save with 11:10 left in regulation and another off a Plainfield North corner kick. Kearns also got help from Jonathan Kraemer,

Benet 3, Oswego 0: In Game 2 of the tournament on Sept. 1, the Panthers lost to Benet, 3-0. Kearns made six saves in goal.

Oswego 1, Fremd 1: The Panthers finished the tournament in a 1-1 tie against Fremd. Adrian Veseli scored an unassisted goal in the 58th minute of play. Kearns had three saves and gave up no goals. Salazar made three saves and had one goal against.
