9er’s Grill to open soon, board told Family-oriented chain currently operates five restaurants in Texas

By JOHN ETHEREDGE jetheredge@shawmedia.com A representative of 9er’s Grill told the Montgomery Village Board on Monday evening the restaurant may open next month.

“We are shooting to open in September but that is to be determined. We’ve had some setbacks along the way, but hopefully we will be open sooner rath-

er than later,” the representative said.

He added that he and other 9er’s Grill officials believe the Montgomery restaurant is ideally located to be successful.

The restaurant chain currently operates five restaurants in Texas.

In Montgomery, 9er’s grill will open in the former Applebee’s restaurant on Route 30, just east of Douglas Road.

“We are definitely confident we have a great location here and Montgomery is a place that we can start making a name for ourselves,” the representative said.

Village board members did their part to expedite the opening of the restaurant by voicing unanimous sup-

port for approving its request for a liquor license.

The representative emphasized that 9er’s Grill is a family-oriented restaurant chain and a full bar that was once located in the former Applebee’s has been removed.

“We are not looking to serve a full line of drinks, but we are looking to serve beer with a hamburger or a nice merlot with a steak,” he said.

Restaurant hours will be from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursdays and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, the representative said.

9er’s Grill liquor license request will be subject to a final vote of approval by the board.

Deck work approved at Fox Bend clubhouse

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com The front deck on the Fox Bend Golf Course clubhouse in Oswego will be replaced this season.

Oswegoland Park District board members on Aug. 17 accepted the bid of L.J. Dodd Construction of Oswego to replace the deck at a cost of $80,800, plus $400 for an alternate.

Dodd’s was the lowest of three bids received by the park district. One was for $131,427 and the other for $161,777.

The high bid was incorrect because of an error in the figures, Rich Zielke, district executive director told board

members.

“We reviewed the bids with our architects and L.J. Dodd Construction’s low bid is a realistic, good number,” Zielke said.

The alternate in the bid which each firm included was to add a cedar guardrail cap instead of Wolmanized lumber on the deck.

“Cedar has a smoother finish, does not warp and is nicer looking. It is well worth the additional $400,” Zielke said.

He said the project also includes replacing the deteriorating concrete at the front of the clubhouse and the concrete steps with the cedar wood.

“L.J. Dodd has worked for us for

many years and does excellent work.

We look forward to working with them on this project,” Zielke said.

The bid also was approved by Grant Casleton, district planning and development director. The project was planned for last spring but no bids were received, Zielke said. The work will be completed this season.

One of the board members asked if they will remove the skunk that has been seen living under one of the club house decks. Brad Doyle, Fox Bend general manager, said the skunk has been seen running around the course many times, but so far no one has detected the usual skunk odor.

Ohio man arrested in connection with robbery of Oswego Starbucks OSWEGO LEDGER Oswego police have arrested an Ohio man in connection with the robbery of a Starbucks coffee shop in the 2700 block of Route 34 in June.

Police said David J. Kimble, 35, of the 1700 block of Prospect Avenue, Cleveland, has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery.

Police said Kimble is currently being held in the Buffalo County Jail in Kearney, Nebraska, on charges unrelated to the Starbucks burglary.

Detectives from the Kearney police department contacted Oswego detectives concerning the suspect earlier this month.

Oswego detectives then traveled to Kearney where they interviewed Kimble. Af-

ter the interview, police said the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the robbery charges against Kimble.

On Aug. 17, a Kendall County judge issued a warrant for Kimble’s arrest and set his bond at $100,000.

Police said they were summoned to the coffee shop just east of Douglas Road shortly after 5 a.m. June 20. Employees told police that a man pulled into the drive-through lane, ordered a coffee and then proceeded to the drive-through window where he demanded money from the employees. Police said the employees believed the man had a weapon and gave him approximately $200.

Surveillance cameras captured images of the man in what appeared to be a gray Dodge Dart, according to police.

Weis said, however, that the law created some issues, as the 187-page document was signed by the governor on a Friday afternoon, giving little time for prosecutors, law enforcement and other officials to prepare for the change.

“We had police officers calling our office at 4:30, 5, 6 at night going, ‘What do we do now that we have this new law that’s effective immediately?’” Weis said. “So there were some procedural things that we had to address right away. We have to train our officers that these are no longer arrestable offenses in and of themselves.”

He said his staff is trying to figure out what a “civil law violation” actually means, since it’s not a non-criminal civil violation, nor is it a straight criminal violation.

“The [circuit court] clerk’s office is trying to figure out how to disburse fine money, how do they handle these, what happens if they don’t show up to court, how do we deal with them, what forms are we gonna need?” he said. “You don’t plead guilty; even though you’re guilty of the offense, you don’t really plead guilty to a civil law violation. So these things are works in progress throughout the state and nobody has a clear direction.”

Weis said organizations for the circuit clerks, state’s attorneys, and law enforcement are “sharing as much information as they can.”

“It’s been not unmanageable, but it’s been somewhat of an adventure as we look at the different things that had to change because of the new law,” he said.

Local law enforcement and prosecutors are weighing in on a new state law that allows for a ticket and fine in lieu of jail for the possession of 10 grams or less of marijuana.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed Senate Bill 2228 into law as Public Act 99-0697 on July 29. The law states that the possession of 10 grams – or 0.035 of one ounce – of marijuana is a “civil law violation punishable by a minimum fine of $100 and a maximum fine of $200.”

The law also states that “if a person is convicted of 10 grams or less of cannabis, the penalty for possession of any drug paraphernalia seized during the arrest for that offense shall be a civil law violation punishable by a minimum fine of $100 and a maximum fine of $200.”

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis said the new law essentially took what were “low end” class B and class C misdemeanor criminal charges and made them “civil law violations.”

“One of the things we’re dealing with is, what does that actually mean?” he said. “They are fine only, they cannot go to jail; they’re not arrested, they are not fingerprinted, booked, as they were before.”

They also decreased the penalties for charges above that by one category, Weis said.

“If you had a class 4 felony weight before, it’s now a class A misdemeanor,” he said, for example.

Yorkville Police Chief Rich Hart said the city has been sending possession cases for anything less than 2.5 grams through the city’s administrative adjudication process, similar to parking tickets and other ordinance violations. He said the city will simply increase the amount to 10 grams to reflect the state law.

“We won’t be taking anything through the county [court system] at all; we’ll be taking it through our adjudication,” he said. “We’re just going to increase the [maximum legal] weight to 10 grams to mirror the state.”

Oswego Police Chief Jeff Burgner said fewer people going through the court system and getting booked for possession of small amounts of marijuana will probably reduce the amount of resources needed.

“Under the previous law, if we came into contact with somebody and they were arrested and charged with possession of cannabis, they all get booked, they’d have to get booked at the police station,” he said. “With these amounts under 10 grams, those peo-

“That was one of the challenges with this law is, it went into effect immediately,” he said. “It was signed on a Friday, and it was effective immediately, so that obviously makes it challenging for law enforcement to be able to react to that law change and implement policies and procedures within your own police agency. But then also working with your state’s attorney’s office to figure out how you’re gonna manage this law change with the courts.”

He continued, “This had the potential to open police agencies up to some liability if they weren’t keeping up with these types of changes. It could have easily gone unnoticed for a few days and you have your officers out there enforcing an old law when they’re not aware that a new law is in effect.”

Burgner said it “would have been nice” to have a 60-day window or even a Jan. 1 start date so agencies could prepare for the change.

“I personally don’t know what the urgency was that this needed to go into effect that day,” he said.

Burgner said those found with 10 grams of marijuana or less will be given a ticket, similar to a speeding ticket.

“It’s an uncommon type of law to issue civil tickets to people, so it’s something we definitely had to work with our state’s attorney’s office on what their procedure is on how we’re going to handle these,” he said. “We had to take into consideration adult versus juvenile. Our juvenile cases typically go through juvenile probation, however, with these being civil that changes that process.”

He said his agency would be using the same form as a speeding ticket but with a “note at the top that it’s a civil violation.”

Burgner said he would be speaking with village officials about the potential for taking such tickets through the village’s adjudication process instead of the courts. However, he said officials had been hesitant in the past due to concerns about the ability of neighboring police agencies to communicate about such non-criminal violations.

“I plan to speak with our policymakers to make sure they’re aware of this new law and the implication that it has, and then we’ll decide at the staff and policymaker level on how we want to move forward with it,” he said.

Burgner declined to comment about whether he’s in favor of full-on marijuana decriminalization, but said it’s a topic where you cannot be “somewhere in between.”

“This particular topic is a topic where you’re either all in or you’re not,” he said. “Because trying to be somewhere in between, it makes it very challenging for law enforcement agencies to enforce.”

Oswego should move forward with TIF The Oswego Village Board appears poised to approve the creation of a tax increment financing district in the village’s downtown area, despite some concerns raised by village residents during an Aug. 16 public hearing.

Under state law, properties within TIF districts have their property taxes frozen at a base level for up to 23 years. The property owners continue to pay property taxes to local taxing districts calculated on that base level. Meanwhile, the additional tax revenue generated by development on the property while the TIF is in place – the increment – is placed into a TIF fund that, in Oswego’s case, would be managed by the village.

Village officials are looking to the TIF district to help provide the financial impetus to spur the redevelopment of several long-dormant downtown area properties, including the site of the former Alexander Lumber Yard at Adams and Washington streets.

Village officials are hopeful of using TIF revenues to help cover the cost of making public infrastructure improvements within the TIF district.

Yes, TIF districts have been abused in other communities, especially within the city of Chicago, but TIFs have proven mostly successful in nearby communities.

For example, the village of Montgomery approved a TIF district in January 2014 for hundreds of acres of undeveloped property targeted for

industrial/business development along Aucutt and Orchard Road.

Since the TIF’s implementation, the American Crystal Sugar Co. has broken ground on a $40 million bulk sugar storage facility and the village board is expected to soon give its final approval for a 52,000-square-foot freight handling facility to be located immediately west of the VVF (former Dial Corporation) plant.

In Yorkville, the city established a successful TIF district to repair substandard roads in a small industrial park and is currently using the proceeds from another TIF to help pay for improvements in the city’s downtown.

The city of Aurora is home to numerous TIF districts, including arguably the most successful one in Illinois history. By approving a massive TIF district on its northeast side in 1989, the city was able to pay to correct chronic flooding issues and extend streets in the area. That paved the way for the development of the Aurora Corporate Center, a massive business park, and the Chicago Premium Outlet Malls.

When the TIF was first approved, the then-flood prone properties were generating about $25,000 in annual property taxes for local taxing districts. As of 2013, those now developed properties are generating more than $9.6 million in property tax revenues.

In many instances in the nearly 40 years since the Illinois General Assembly granted local munic-

ipalities the authority to create TIF districts, other local government agencies – most notably school districts – have opposed their establishment. Those agencies have correctly argued that the TIFs cost them money in the short-term since they do not receive any additional revenues from new development on the affected properties over the 23-year life of a TIF. However, we’ve noticed that school districts locally have been more agreeable to the creation of TIF districts in recent years. It’s important to note that School District 308 has gone on record in support of the proposed downtown Oswego TIF district, while in Montgomery the West Aurora School District was supportive of the creation of the village’s Aucutt/Orchard road TIF. We suspect officials with the two school districts realize the only way they will one day realize significant new revenues from long-dormant business and industrial properties is to allow for the creation of TIF districts and then for development to occur.

Then, after the TIF district expires, they stand to gain the full amount of new property taxes generated by the development that has occurred.

Given the unique challenges facing Oswego officials in their efforts to secure development in the downtown area, we believe a TIF district would make economic sense for both the village and its taxpayers.

First pioneers came looking for opportunity REFLECTIONS Roger Matile One of the themes about the Fox Valley’s pioneer history that never fails to intrigue me is why all those people decided to leave their comfortable homes back in the 1830s and move west to the lonely frontier.

The first non-Native Americans who lived in this area were members of a relatively rare group here in northern Illinois, the hunter-trappers. Frederick Countryman was one, living with his wife’s family group, and another was Peter Specie, who was far more trader than hunter or trapper.

Our first pioneer farmers drifted up the Fox River from Ottawa, then the absolute head of navigation on the Illinois River. For most of the year, Peru was the real head of navigation, but during periods of high water, steamboats could make it to the docks at Ottawa.

In 1826, Robert Beresford walked up the river from Ottawa and staked his claim at the southern-most point of Holderman’s Grove, located at the southwest corner of modern Big Grove Township.

Pierce Hawley arrived soon thereafter, claiming land at the north end of the grove. But only Beresford’s was situated in what was named the Semi-

earmarked for the establishment of a state seminary or college.

Starting in 1825, a commission created by Gov. Edward Coles located 26 of these sections throughout the state, including one section in what would one day become Kendall County’s Big Grove Township. That section was at the southernmost point of Holderman’s Grove, meaning that Beresford was legally entitled to settle on it. Hawley’s claim, a mile away, was on land where settlement was supposedly prohibited by treaties with the local Native American tribes.

At a recent Montgomery Village Board meeting where we discussed long-term water supply issues, I stated that I regard providing quality drinking water as the No. 1 priority of local government.

As human beings it is our primary requirement for life, and no other government program or initiative can match it in importance. Growth in the western suburbs has taxed our current water sources and it’s a topic that merits serious discussion as we plan for the future.

Q: Where does our water come from?

A: Historically, communities in this

area have relied upon wells accessing the shallow and/or deep aquifers as a water source. This provided an adequate source for decades, but as the population in the western suburbs has grown, the increased drawdown of water has significantly depleted the deep aquifers.

It can take decades or centuries for rain to ultimately reach and replenish the deep aquifer, and it is obvious that

While many communities closer to Chicago have turned to using Lake Michigan water, the distance does not make this feasible for our area. Therefore, some communities, such as Elgin and Aurora, have moved to using water from the Fox River to meet a portion of their needs.

Montgomery is also considering the river as a water source as it develops a long-term water supply plan.

Q: What can be done to prevent further depletion of the aquifer?

A: This is a complicated issue, but

education and water conservation are key factors that can slow the depletion of our water supply resources.

Montgomery and many other communities have had water conservation ordinances in place for years that

restrict hours of lawn watering during the summer. Lawn watering is one of the biggest non-essential uses of treated drinking water. That’s why we participate in the sale of rain barrels each spring to help people collect rain water that can be used for lawn and garden watering. Other outdoor water conservation measures include the use of mulch and selection of native plants and grasses that do not demand frequent watering. Newer, more water-efficient fixtures can also help reduce water usage in our homes.

Q: What is the village of Montgomery doing to provide a viable long-term water supply for its residents?

A: Since overuse in one community

could lead to a shortage for everyone, it is essential for communities using the same water sources to work together to create a sustainable water management plan. The village of Montgomery actively participates in the Northwest Water Planning Alliance (NWPA), whose mission is “to collaboratively plan for and steward

our shared river and groundwater resources to ensure a sustainable water supply for the people, economy, environment, and future generations.”

Water conservation and long-term water supply planning are topics that you will be hearing about more frequently in the future. The village of Montgomery is currently considering a study to see if a joint water treatment plant with Oswego and Yorkville would make sense to enable all three communities to utilize water from the Fox River for our long-term water needs.

In the meantime, we are closely monitoring well levels and water usage, and just completed a village-wide water leak survey to be sure we are not losing water in our distribution system. Conserving the water we have and wise planning for the future will ensure a sustainable water supply for generations to come.

To the Editor: Thank you for all your continued support over the past several months. I have had the opportunity to meet, and will continue to meet, with the residents of Kendall County Board District 2 and two important issues that have continued to be raised is taxes and infrastructure.

As a county board member what can be done? Well, as a citizen I have advocated along with Elizabeth Flowers the expansion of the Route 30 corridor working with state, federal and county officials. We have advocated meeting with members of civic, business and everyday residents to advocate for this expansion all the way to Plainfield. Part of this expansion will also be the development of Wolf’s Crossing Road and the improvements along Route 30.

This is a crucial investment into the infrastructure of Kendall County that will allow us to plan long term towards economic development. The villages of Oswego and Montgomery have shown their commitment to strategic thinking in supporting capital investments back into their communities and as a county board member we would work with them and discuss what would be most beneficial for all. Maintaining a balanced budget and keeping a close eye on expenses will help

in not increasing taxes.

Continued from page 4 light and the roads dried out early, settlers flooded onto the rolling prairies west and south of Chicago.

Most of those who came were farmers looking for good, cheap land. Land in their home states of New York, Vermont and Massachusetts was not only expensive, but was also rocky and of poor quality. Many of those looking for a new start headed west, first to Ohio where they paused for a few years on land that was affordable, but which was for the most part heavily wooded, requiring almost unimaginable, backbreaking labor to create decent farmland.

The Pearce family, who were the first settlers in Oswego Township, followed this route. Originally from Virginia, they first emigrated to Champaign County around modern Dayton and Urbana in southeastern Ohio, where they settled and farmed for a few years.

In the second half of 1832, after the hysteria caused by the Black Hawk War died down, brothers Daniel, John and Walter Pearce, and their brotherin-law, William Wilson, traveled west prospecting for better land with less timber on which to settle. They found what they were looking for along the banks of the Fox River where Waubonsie Creek enters the stream, deciding to settle there.

Returning to Ohio, they wound up their affairs, sold their farms and then headed west, arriving at what would one day become Oswego, just one of the family groups arriving during the Year of the Early Spring.

The first Wormleys, John and William, also walked west, this time from New York, prospecting for land. Like the Pearces, they decided the mixed prairies and groves along the banks

of the Fox River looked like the place they’d like to spend the rest of their lives.

They both claimed land on the west side of the river, including a fine outcropping of native limestone that was profitably quarried for many years for building stone. Besides being farmers, the Wormleys were also skilled at building dams, and they helped both Levi Gorton build his dam at Oswego and Samuel McCarty build his at Aurora.

Meanwhile, farther south, settlement had been going on since Beresford and Hawley staked their claims.

Hawley, though, soon upped stakes and moved east to the DuPage River, where he became prominent in Naperville’s history, while Beresford moved back down the river to the Ottawa area. But other settlers quickly took their places.

The families of George and Clark Hollenback and Ezra Ackley and William Harris came west from western Virginia, heading first into Ohio and then to the Wabash Valley of Indiana before arriving at Magnolia in Putnam County, Illinois. In March 1831, the men traveled up the Fox River, finally choosing a fine grove of hardwoods that was eventually named for the Hollenbacks as their new homes. They quickly brought their families up.

Their descendants are still living here in Kendall County to this day.

So most of those pioneer families came looking for good land to farm, but blacksmiths, millwrights and storekeepers came looking for opportunities, too, which they all found.

And here we sit today, enjoying the fruits of what those adventurous souls created with so much toil and tribulation so many years ago.

The 2,500 School District 308 teachers and staff members who attended the 2016-17 Convocation heard messages of encouragement from Board of Education President Matt Bauman and Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin during the 90-minute event to kick off the new school year.

The program was held Aug. 16 in the Oswego East High School gym.

“It was awesome walking in this morning. I love the spirit. Today is a day about you, our staff,” Bauman said.

“You are the ones in the classrooms helping our students.

You take the initiatives that the board discusses, and you make them happen where it matters the most. You are there for the daily struggles our children face, and for that, we thank you. We appreciate everything being done.”

Sparlin expressed excitement about his new role as superintendent and his confidence in and appreciation for the work being done across the district by what he called “one big team.”

“We are creating a system that provides opportunities for all students to be successful when they graduate, preparing them to be able to compete in a global society. If we can do that, then we can consider ourselves a world-class school system,” said Sparlin, who took over as superintendent in July. “I think we have all the tools we need to be the

The Yorkville City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to sell off a vintage train caboose that has been sitting on tracks in the city’s downtown area for many years. Aldermen voted to publish a notice of sale and accept offers to buy and move the caboose.

Alderman Carlo Colosimo said he was happy to see the caboose go.

“I have asked for this thing to be sold for six years,” he said. “A complete waste of taxpayer money when it was purchased. I can’t stress that enough; I’m glad to see it go.”

The caboose was built in 1967 and served the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and later the Burlington Northern Railroad. The city bought it from Angela Fuller Cline of Nebraska for $10,500 in 2007. Officials had planned to refurbish the 250-squarefoot caboose and move it to the trainthemed Bristol Station Park in the Whispering Meadows subdivision.

Parks and Recreation Director Tim Evans said the project was placed on hold because of the projected cost – between $20,000 and $30,000.

Oswego OKs tax rebate for steakhouse Longhorn developers eye Rt. 34 site

By ERIKA WURST news@kendallcountynow.com Oswego residents looking for a juicy steak won’t need to leave the village soon, thanks to a tax rebate agreement village trustees approved Tuesday evening that brings Longhorn Steakhouse one step closer to town.

Restaurant developers are looking to locate the steakhouse along Route 34 between Fifth Third Bank and Panda Express in the Prairie Market retail center.

In an effort to snag the steakhouse and fill a lot that’s been vacant for a decade, trustees voted unanimously to give the restaurant’s developers an incentive to come to town and fill the void.

Trustees agreed to give a 0.5 percent sales tax rebate for 10 years, up to a total of $180,000, to Longhorn developers Darden Restaurants Inc. Darden had initially asked for a 0.75 percent rebate, but worked with village staff to settle on the 0.5 percent.

According to village documents, the

rebate money will go to offset unexpected building costs associated with the location. Darden has said that the proposed restaurant will have a higher cost to develop based on the cost of improvements in the Chicago region as compared to the rest of the United States.

The estimated costs are approximately $500,000 more than the average cost for development, leading Darden to request assistance to address the upfront costs associated with the project.

And, while the village is giving up $180,000 to developers over 10 years, it is actually expected to gain $650,000 in sales taxes during that same period if the restaurant opens, Village Administrator Daniel DiSanto said.

In addition to the sales tax revenue, the restaurant’s opening is expected to create approximately 50 jobs and generate $1 million in property taxes over the 10-year term of agreement.

“I want to make this clear,” trustee Ryan Kaufman said. “This is a huge win for the village.”

So, why the need for a sales tax in-

centive in the first place?

DiSanto said it boils down to the lot where Longhorn is expected to call home.

“There’s been one lot [in that area] that has not been developed in the last decade. That’s this lot,” DiSanto said.

The lot happens to be situated next to Famous Dave’s, Panda Express, Olive Garden and other restaurants featuring a variety of fare.

Because of restrictive use covenants, which seek to protect tenants from competition, the type of restaurants permitted to locate in the nearby vacant lot are scarce.

“As restaurants have located in the center, the types of restaurants that would be allowed have been reduced.

These restrictions have resulted in this lot remaining vacant throughout the development of the center,” village documents read.

A steakhouse, however, would be permitted – and would qualify to ask for an incentive.

The village’s incentive policy, adopted in 2014, establishes that businesses that are unique or fulfill a need of the community are eligible to request an incentive.

With no steakhouses in sight, Long-

horn fits that bill, trustees said.

DiSanto said alternative proposals for filling the lot include a paint store and a dental office. And, while he said he has no qualm about either, Longhorn would certainly bring in more sales tax dollars and feed the “sales tax juggernaut” that is Route 34, DiSanto said.

“It also makes a lot of sense to bring a desired use to Oswego,” he said.

Trustee Karin McCarthy-Lange said she was initially against tax rebates, but quickly learned that they are often necessary to lure wanted businesses to the area.

“I’m tired of seeing businesses go to surrounding communities,” she said, referencing Binny’s Beverage Depot, which will soon call Montgomery home thanks to a tax incentive. And, she said, she’d especially did not want to lose a steakhouse, which village residents have expressed great desire for.

“There’s no place in Oswego to get a steak,” she said. “It will fulfill that need and bring great tax revenue. We’re not giving away the store, we’re just sharing a little bit of the cost with them. ...

I’m excited to support this tonight.”

Construction is expected to begin next February.

The Oswego boys golf team opened Southwest Prairie Conference match play with a 154-171 loss to Minooka at Heritage Bluffs Golf Course on Monday.

Craig Schlegel and Kobe Taylor carded 41s to lead the Panthers followed by Mason Lee (44) and Zach Krisch (45).

On Sept. 18, Oswego won the Panther Stableford with a team score of 60. Joliet Catholic finished second with a team score of 58. This modified scoring system is based on points for bogies, pars, birdies and eagles. Taylor finished with 17 points for third place individually, followed by Schlegel (16), Tommy Falcone (14) and Lee (13).

Oswego East varsity: The Wolves competed in the Panther Stableford on Aug. 18 and finished with 37 points. Collmann Aaron led with 12 points, Alex Hwang finished with 11, Brian Donn had eight and Zack Strahanoski with six. Oswego East led by strong senior class

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com In recent seasons, the Oswego East girls volleyball team has been putting the pieces together on the court, but this year with five returning seniors, coach Adam Thurlwell should have a clear picture of the puzzle.

“We worked hard over the summer, with competitive league and camp,” Thurlwell said. “You have six positions on the court and with five seniors that has to make you feel good to have that. We’ll see how they can piece it together. We’ve beefed up our schedule.

It was hard and we’ve made it even harder. The seniors are ready and excited for it.”

Senior outside hitter Meghan Delaney is a returning Southwest Prairie All-Conference player after leading the Wolves with 247 kills. Senior hitter Sarah Schultz returns for her fourth varsity season, earning All-SPC honors as a sophomore and leading the team in blocks as a junior. Senior setter Katie Ayers is back for a third varsity season, and right side Allison Bertrand and middle Gabrielle Campbell are back for their senior seasons.

Adam Thurlwell Oswego East volleyball coach Delaney finished with 247 kills this season in addition to 17.5 blocks and 235 digs. Kuehl had 241 kills, 18.5 blocks and 248 digs. Junior Sarah Schultz finished with 132 kills and tied senior Cami Heinisch with a team-best 24.5 blocks. Junior setter Katie Ayers posted 452 assists while senior libero Alexa Jardenil finished with 246 digs.

Senior Makayla Chevalier is vying for the libero role with juniors Morgan Boardwine and Abbie Kuehl.

“We have about three or four that are pretty solid as a DS,” Thurlwell said. “There’s a lot of talent on this team. There are some good pieces there and we have to find a way to make it click. I don’t know if we

have the girls in the right position yet so that we’re firing on all cylinders. It’s a good problem to have because there’s not a huge drop-off from the top six or eight. Our one to 14 are very, very competitive.”

Oswego East comes off an 11-18 season after a 2-13 start, and this year will be even more challenging to produce a winning record. The Wolves open the season with non-conference games against Metea Valley and Waubonsie Valley this week before co-hosting the Metea Valley/Oswego East Invite on Friday and Saturday.

The invite replaces the previous eight-team Oswego East Invite. Both sites will host three pool play games, with Oswego East playing Burlington Central, Providence Catholic and St. Ignatius. Championship play will pair teams into the Gold, Silver, Bronze or Copper brackets. Oswego East will host the Silver and Bronze divisions, regardless of what bracket the Wolves fall into on the second day of tournament action.

“So far, so good,” he said. “They’re working hard and some of our newer guys have been fitting in well.”

Oswego East utilized several sophomores on the field last season, so the Wolves return a strong junior class including midfielder Michael Waclaw, who returns for his third varsity season. Manuel Magana and Ford Frazer will help anchor the front row, while Kyle Orive and Angel Mejia will hold down the defense.

Dawson Johnson returns for the Wolves as well as Victor Cuevas and Ryan Aten to the midfield. Oswego East has two skilled players in goal, with competition between junior Sam Jones and sophomore Nathan Nuerter for the starting role.

Oswego East endures a grueling start to the season, facing several top teams on the road with just two home games through the first month of the season. The Wolves opened against No. 3-ranked Naperville North on Tuesday and lost 7-2. The team continues with Waubonsie Valley on Aug. 25

before the Red Devil Cup at Hinsdale Central.

Oswego East will face host Hinsdale Central on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. before meeting Brother Rice on Sept.

1 at 5 p.m. and will close the tournament against Downers Grove South on Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.

“I don’t know how accurate those are, but Downers South is ranked fifth and Hinsdale Central is ranked 10th, and with Naperville North, those are three of our first six opponents,” Szymanski said.

Southwest Prairie Conference play opens on Sept. 6 against Romeoville, and Oswego East will face Joliet Central and Joliet West as the newest members of the SPC this fall.

“Plainfield North has established itself as of late, but I don’t know much about the Joliets,” Szymanski said.

“Our conference is not full of super skilled, Division I players. It’s the blue collar conference, and if you can come together and play well, you have a chance of winning any night. If you can’t do that on a consistent basis, you’re going to find more losses than you do wins. Unfortunately, we just didn’t gel as a team last year. This is a good group and they’re working hard.”

For first-year head coach Matt Slechta, a two-day tournament to kick off the season is the perfect opportunity to evaluate the Oswego girls volleyball team.

The Panthers will open the 2016 slate at the 24-team Plainfield North Invite with pool play games against Lockport and Sandburg on Friday, and championship bracket play on Saturday.

Slechta, a science teacher at Geneva High School and club coach at Sports Performance, was introduced as the newest Oswego coach this past spring. He is replacing Traci Weiss, who resigned after three seasons.

“They’re a good group of kids and they really seem to mesh well. It made my transition into this position easier because they already know what they want to do as a group and have an idea of who each other is personally,” Slechta said. “Practices have gotten a lot faster, so that’s something they’re getting used to and catching up to that speed. In terms of the system, everything is pretty familiar and they’re comfortable with what we’re doing.”

women’s volleyball at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro next year. Six other seniors are back in the lineup, including defensive specialist Alyssa Farney, hitter Shelby Daniele, middle Josie Maxim and outside hitter Allyson Manzella, while junior hitter Lexi Miller also returns to the mix.

Junior newcomer Cara Ferchen will fill a void at the setter position left by four-year player Katelyn Burke, who is now playing at Ohio.

Oswego comes off a 17-17 season that included a .500 mark in conference. The SPC season opens on Sept.

6 with a trip to defending champion Plainfield Central. The Panthers also have their sights set on a run at the program’s first postseason title since 2011.

“They see what they have returning.There’s a lot of experience returning and we’re trying to finish high in conference and make a run at a regional title,” Slechta said.

Oswego will also participate in the Glenbard West Invite on Sept. 16-17 before making its debut in the Mizuno Cup at St. Charles East on Oct. 7-8.

“That’s probably the second or third toughest tournament in the state during the season,” Slechta said of the Mizuno Cup. “It gives us that judge of where we are at that point in the season before playoffs start two weeks later.”

The Oswego/Oswego East co-op girls golf team graduated just one player from last year’s inaugural team, but adds several newcomers to grow the program in its second season.

Junior Kiana Krahulik is among the top returners as a 2015 Class AA sectional qualifier, and the team adds a talented freshman in Summer Hawkins. Seniors Autumn Sullivan and Emily Staples along with juniors Lindsey Jones and Lindsay Stuersel are also figuring into the top scorers, along with sophomore Katie Brucki. “[Krahulik] will be one of the main contributors this season. Over the summer she played in a lot of different tournaments and that’s not only going to be beneficial throughout the season, but when it gets to regional and sectional time again she’s going to have a much better idea of the mental capacity it’s going to take,” said coach Brian Chandler.

The Panthers had high hopes for 2015, but the injury bug struck Oswego and the team was unable to overcome the depleted roster.

“We pulled up some guys last year who were not ready and it was trial by fire, but we return a very senior-laden team,” Oswego coach Brian Falli said.

“The seniors have done amazing things in the offseason.”

Oswego returns 11 seniors including eight starters, in addition to several sophomores and juniors on the 23-player roster. Veterans include three-year starting goalie Nick Kearns.

Senior Mitch Kearby, junior Julian Ibarra and senior Adrian Veseli will anchor the front row and will be expected to be the top goal scorers for the Panthers. Starting center backs Ryan Rathman and Jesse Corneliusen return after missing several games with injuries last year. Truman Crafts, Blake Biery and Ryan Baumann add depth to the middle as returning starters.

Among the promising newcomers is midfielder Omar Carreno, who opted to play club soccer last year but will make his high school debut as a sophomore this fall.

The season opens Thursday with a home game against Batavia and continues with non-conference games against Naperville Central and Wheaton Warrenville South before Oswego makes its debut at the Best of the West Invite at Naperville North on Aug. 30Sept. 3. The Panthers are slated to play host Naperville North, Benet and Fremd in tournament action.

“It’s our first year in the Best of the West and it’s a very tough tournament,” Falli said. “We open with Naperville North, who is currently ranked No. 3, and we get Benet after that, which is in the top 40 in state right now, and we finish with a very strong Fremd program.

And then we get to start conference against the defending champs. When were invited into the tournament, that’s what we were looking for. Our sectional is tough from top to bottom, so we want to get better every game.”

Oswego will open the Southwest Prairie Conference season on Sept. 6, hosting Plainfield North.

Krahulik carded a 46 while Hawkins and Stuersel had a pair of 48s and Sullivan rounded out the team score with a 49, while Staples wasn’t far behind with a round of 50.

“They beat us by 26 [strokes] last time, and we didn’t break 200 all season last year, so for us to start the season with a 191 was awesome,” Chandler said.

Monday’s scheduled Southwest Prairie Conference opener was rescheduled to Aug. 30, and play continues Thursday with a home match against Romeoville at Fox Bend.

A busy September will see Oswego travel to the Guilford Invitational at Ingersoll Golf Course on Sept. 17 in the final stretch. Romeoville will host the SPC tournament at Inwood on Sept. 28 and the Rosary Invite closes the regular season before regionals.
