School District 308 Board OKs administrator contracts

news@kendallcountynow.com The School District 308 Board of Education approved contracts for five administrators for the 2016-17 school year during a board meeting June 13.

Those administrators include Chris Ferko, assistant principal, Amy Feulner, assistant principal, Melissa McDowell, assistant director of elementary education, Roxana Sanders, director of human resources, and Lisa Smith, executive director of elementary education.

McDowell will receive the largest raise at approximately 21 percent as her base salary will jump from $76,950 to $93,000. Sanders’ and Smith’s will both increase by approximately 9 percent, with Sanders going from $112,000 to $122,000 and Smith’s contract increasing from $117,002 to $127,000.

Potential new salaries for Ferko and Feulner, as well as the percentage of their potential increases, were not yet made available, although Ferko’s base salary was $70,000 and Feulner’s was

In addition, a three-year fuel contract with Gas Depot Oil Company and twoyear contracts with Septran Inc. and First Student Inc. were approved for student transportation.

Prior to the meeting, the district hosted a reception for outgoing superintendent Dr. Matthew Wendt, who is departing to take a superintendent’s job in Arkansas.

Wendt has served in his current capacity as District 308 superintendent since 2012 and was under contact through 2019 after receiving a new contract in 2014.

He’ll take a similar position although at a much smaller school district in Fayetteville, Arkansas. His final day for District 308 will be June The reception also served as a welcoming of sorts of Dr. John Sparlin, who is currently serving as associate superintendent for administrative services with District 308. Sparlin will be taking over for Wendt.

There was no public comment during the meeting.

BRIEF Starbucks robbed at gunpoint

Oswego police are looking for a man who took $200 cash from the Oswego Starbucks, 2750 Route 34, early Tuesday morning in an armed robbery.

Police say the robber pulled into the coffee shop drive-thru lane at about 5 a.m., pointed a gun at the employees and demanded money. Once the employee turned over the money, the man drove off in a Dodge sedan in an unknown direction. No one was injured in the encounter, police said. The suspect is described as being in his mid-30s, wearing a green shirt with short red hair and a heavy build, who speaks with a southern drawl, according to police.

Board members expressed some hesitancy in approving the increases due to the district’s financial struggles, something board member Greg O’Neil discussed in detail during the meeting.

“Eventually we’re going to have to make cuts and they’re not going to be popular, but there’s no other way to do it because the revenue side isn’t there,” he said. “It’s not up to me, but we’re going to have to figure out how to structure the program and what we need to target. I just don’t know how you can run a district for very long with these kind of deficits.”

The board also approved the personnel report, which included three rehires, seven administrators, 13 teachers and 38 support staff members.

There were other approvals, including a one-year lease extension between the Oswego YMCA and Oswego Senior Center.

Hastert arrives at federal prison in Minn.

U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin recommended the Rochester Federal Medical Center for the ailing Hastert during sentencing on April 27.

The 64-acre prison is located about 300 miles from Hastert’s home in Plano. TV evangelist Jim Bakker served some time at Rochester for multiple fraud convictions in the mid-1990s, but was released, the AP reports. The prison specializes in health care for physically ailing or mentally ill inmates, and is near the Mayo Clinic.

Hastert nearly died from a blood infection and suffered a stroke after he pleaded guilty on Oct. 28 last year, and has diabetes.

Hastert wasn’t charged with child abuse because the statutes of limitation have run out since he coached at suburban Chicago’s Yorkville High School from 1965 to 1981. Instead, Hastert pleaded guilty to violating banking law in trying to pay $3.5 million in hush money to one victim referred to in court papers as “Individual A.”

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Treasurer Jill Ferko thanked the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office for making officers available at the county office building in Yorkville following some harassing phone calls her office received from a county resident displeased with his

property tax bill.

“It was greatly appreciated not only by myself but by my staff as well,” Ferko said.

Ferko told the county board during their meeting Tuesday morning that the sheriff sent deputies by her office earlier this month shortly after the threatening calls came in.

The due date for the first installment of tax bills was at the beginning of June. The county treasurer’s office does not set the amount owed on each tax bill but rather collects the payments from residents and distributes

She declined to go into detail about the nature of the calls but said that she was concerned enough to accept the sheriff’s help.

Ferko added that the person had been delinquent on his taxes and had a history with issues paying his taxes.

She mentioned that someone in the clerk’s office filed a complaint with the police after they received threatening calls from the same person. She said the person in question is not allowed in the county office building without a police escort.

Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert reported to a federal prison in southeastern Minnesota at about noon Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

Hastert is starting a 15-month sentence in a hush-money case, according to the report. Prosecutors say the 74-year-old Republican sexually abused at least four boys when he was a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School.

The nation’s longest-serving GOP speaker and one-time second-in-line to the president will be known as Inmate No. 47991-424 and becomes one of the highest-ranking U.S. politicians to ever do prison time, the AP says. Dennis Hastert must serve Hastert at least 85 percent of his sentence, or just over a year, according to the AP.

Touring Vietnam Wall will provide a teachable moment Area residents should mark June 29-July 3, 2017, on their calendars and make plans to stop by Prairie Point Community Park between Plainfield and Grove roads in Oswego.

What visitors to the park will find there on those days will be a replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. For nearly 30 years, the Vietnam Moving Wall, which bears the names of the 58,315 U.S. servicemen and women killed in the war from 1959 to 1975, has been traveling the country to honor the memory of those who served and paid the ultimate price in our nation’s most controversial war.

Until now, the wall has been on display just twice in the Fox Valley area, both times in Aurora. The wall made its first appearance in 1988 in McCullough Park along the banks of the Fox River and, most recently, in 2013 on the grounds of West Aurora High School.

The Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club, village of Oswego, Oswegoland Park District, School District 308 and Oswego Chamber of Commerce should all be commended for their work to bring the wall to the village.

We visited the wall both times when it was in Aurora and found it a profoundly moving experience.

Just like the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., the wall serves to bring home the reality of the human cost of the war to the communities wherever it is displayed. Family members, fellow servicemen and friends come to search the wall for the names of their loved ones who were lost. Many leave mementos at the base of the wall, just as they continue to do at the memorial in Washington, D.C. Among the especially touching mementos we saw left at the wall in Aurora in 1988 and again in 2013 were faded copies of newspaper articles reporting the story of loved ones who had grown up in Aurora and surrounding communities being reported either missing or killed in action.

We are especially pleased to see that School District 308 is a participant in the committee to bring the wall to Oswego. We are hopeful that District 308 students and staff will be as actively involved in presenting the wall as the students at West Aurora were three years ago.

At West the students created a stirring display by covering the front lawn of the school and a large athletic field with American flags as a tribute to the fallen Vietnam veterans and assisted in keeping a 24/7 vigil at the wall while it was on display.

It was also heartening to see so many West students – born decades after the war ended – at the wall standing with Vietnam veterans, their family members and friends. With the passage of time and the memories of that difficult era in our nation’s history fading a bit more each day, it is of paramount importance that today’s students and their parents learn about the Vietnam War and the sacrifices that so many made on our behalf. The arrival of the wall in Oswego next June will present a welcome opportunity to do just that.

Java Man’s big molar, the origin of June’s name and other observations REFLECTIONS Roger Matile Well, we made it through the rousing celebration of Father’s Day, and now we’re drawing a bead on Independence Day. The kids are well out of school, more warm weather is on the way, the swimming pools are open, and summer is officially here and has been for nearly a full week.

Here’s what The Old Farmers Almanac has to say about our shiny, brand new season: “The summer solstice heralds the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The timing of the summer solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its northernmost point of the equator. In 2016, summer begins with the solstice on the 21st at 12:24 a.m. EDT. The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice).”

Sitting here pondering the summer of 2016, I heard the mail carrier arrive and so wandered out to bring in today’s harvest of junk mail, of which there was much. Not all junk mail is created equally, however, since some is more edifying than others. I’ve been collecting some of the better junky bits, and, with no further ado, here are a number of things I probably never would even have thought about if I hadn’t opened all the junk mail that arrived at the Matile Manse each and every day that little post office jeep showed up out front: Among the largest human teeth scientists have found belonged to Java Man – better known as Homo erectus, who lived it up around a million years ago. Obviously, it was a lost orthodontic opportunity.

June is another of our heathen months, named as it is after Juno, wife of the Roman god Jupiter, who also got a giant planet named for him – but not a month like his little woman.

On the other hand, some believe June’s name derives from the Latin iuniores, meaning “younger ones,” as opposed to maiores (“elders”), which some believe is the derivation of the month of May’s name. So you can take your pick. I’m going with Lady Juno.

June might only have 30 days, but it also has the longest daylight hours here in the Northern Hemisphere.

As village president of Montgomery, I’m very pleased to have this opportunity to write a monthly column for the Ledger and answer some of the top questions I receive from our residents. One hot topic of discussion is the widening of Route 30 west to Route 47, a project that will greatly benefit the entire area. IDOT is currently completing a Phase I Study on the project. I should note that although the state is planning ahead, there are currently no funds available for the construction.

A: One major item that will be dis-

cussed at the public hearing on June 29 will be sound walls. Residents and businesses who meet the federal criteria and are designated as “Benefited Receptors” will be contacted separately to determine if they would like to have a sound wall. The determination of whether a sound wall is technically warranted is determined by IDOT in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration policy, but the

determination as to whether it is constructed is determined by the “Benefited Receptors.” The village does not have any input into this process. The designated Benefited Receptors will determine by majority vote if a sound wall is to be included.

If you are determined to be a “Benefited Receptor” you will be individually contacted by IDOT. Please understand that not every resident along the corridor is eligible to vote; this determination is made by IDOT. The village officials and staff have been working with IDOT throughout this lengthy process. We believe once the project is constructed the proposed improvement will be a benefit to our residents and the motoring public.

While there is still more work to be done, much has been accomplished. I encourage all interested parties to attend the public hearing and add your input to the process.

A historic PrairieFest

To the Editor: The Oswegoland Park District had a historic PrairieFest weekend, which was only possible because of our amazing team of volunteers. These students, couples, individuals, families, and community groups (like The Happy Helpers and the Rotary Club of Montgomery) join us each Father’s Day weekend to make PrairieFest the community festival where many of our favorite memories are made.

We had gorgeous weather all weekend, which set the stage for record-breaking crowds and some stellar service from volunteers. Their smiles were brighter than the sun as they greeted you at gates, walked the

6 Big crowds enjoy PrairieFest

PrairieFest, Oswego’s annual community celebration, attracted large crowds of area residents to PrairieFest Park near Oswego High School beginning last Thursday.

Once again, the celebration featured a carnival, live music, business expo and plenty of other fun activities for all ages.

On Friday night the Marshall Tucker Band rocked the fest’s main stage with the band’s many classic hits from the late 1970s.

Smashmouth took over the main stage on Saturday night with a crowd-pleasing performance.

On Sunday, a huge crowd turned out in the village’s downtown to watch the festival’s annual parade.

The Oswegoland Park District organizes the fest each year with support from local businesses and civic organizations.

OSWEGO POLICE REPORTS Criminal damage Oswego police took a report of criminal damage to property at a business in the 10-20 block of Stonehill Road in the village June 14.

Police said damage was estimated at $2,000.

Police said the offending vehicle, driven by a juvenile, fled the accident scene without giving aid or providing any information. Warrant arrest Oswego police arrested Ryan M. Welsh, 30, of the 200 block of East Washington Street, Oswego, at his residence June 15 on a warrant for failure to appear in court. Police said Welsh was taken to the Kendall County Jail pending court proceedings.

Riding the efforts of solid mound work and timely hitting, the Oswego Cats topped the Wheaton White Sox 5-1 in a non-league matchup on Thursday night at Jackie’s Field of Dreams.

Oswego (7-5, 5-4), which is in the midst of 13 games in a 14-day stretch, returned to the diamond after a rainout against Chicago Suburban Baseball League associate member Team Acceleration last Tuesday.

The Cats, who surrendered four hits while racking up 12 of their own, jumped on the board first with a threerun fourth. Bailey Watros walked to open the inning, and center fielder Clay Schuler moved him to third on a long double. Right fielder Bobby Smith hit one back to the pitcher, who elected to throw home and instead launched one to the backstop to allow Watros to score.

Smith moved to second on the play, distracting the infielders long enough for Schuler to score. He came around three batters later on first baseman Michael Fidler’s ground-rule double.

“Our hitting went pretty well,” Cats field manager Todd Miller said. “We had a base-running blunder there early, but I was hoping that it wouldn’t come back to bite us, and it didn’t. It was nice to see the bats wake up and put the ball in play. We’re coming along, and we’re getting these guys here a little more comfortable.”

In the sixth, second baseman Adam Lipscomb and shortstop Jeff Woods led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and both eventually crossed the plate to make it a 5-0 game. At the bottom of the order, catcher Mike Cherven hit 3-for-4 on the night.

Wheaton was quiet at the plate, as right-hander Kendall Interial tossed five innings of no-hit ball, walking one in the third and striking out eight in his season debut.

Lefty David Schurr came on in the sixth and was stellar, holding the

White Sox without a hit until shortstop Justin Lo broke it up with a single to start the seventh.

Former Cat and Yorkville graduate Chris Hill drove Lo in with a base hit three batters later for Wheaton’s lone run of the night.

Schurr conceded another hit in the eighth, but the runner was left stranded at third. He gave up four hits and a walk and fanned two in three frames before right-hander Andrew Bruss closed out the ninth with a one-twothree effort.

“Our pitching was good with Kendall out there,” Miller said. “It was a little rough, and there were a lot of pitches, but there were a lot of swings and misses. That was definitely a good one to get, and it gets his first one out of the way.”

Keeping both pitchers and batters ready will be just part of the regular-season battle for Oswego, which has been bitten by the injury bug recently.

Already without Jose Camacho as he completes a college course, the squad will miss catcher Matt Bunetta (undisclosed), infielder Trevor Lines (wrist), and outfielder Jeff Tucker (shoulder).

It is unclear how long Bunetta and Lines will sit, but Tucker is expected to have an MRI this week and could be out for an extended time. A deep roster, though, should continue to make these absences easier to overcome.

“He’s going to have some rehab on it, and we’ll see where he’s at afterward,” Miller said. “If we have to shut him down for the summer we will, I’d rather do that so he can play two years of college baseball. ... We have guys in the bank and haven’t used them yet, but I want to get them some innings because I don’t want them to come in later in the year and have them be rusty.”

Notes: Oswego, currently fifth in the league standings, turned in a stellar weekend in CSBL competition, splitting a pair at Joliet on Saturday with a 10-3 win in game one and a 10-4 loss in game two and sweeping two at Beecher 5-2 and 4-3 on Sunday.

Oswego 18-year-old wins U.S. Amateur Disc Golf Championship

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com After a thrilling playoff win to clinch the 2016 United States Amateur Disc Golf Championship, Oswego resident Gavin Rathbun is hoping to make an even bigger impact this summer.

Rathbun won a three-way playoff at Kensington Metropark to propel himself to the title with an 18-under par to finish with a 168 on the course in Milford, Michigan, June 3-5. The trio went to Hole 1 for the playoff, and Rathbun’s disc ended up holehigh, 15 feet from the pin. He then tapped in the putt for the win.

“I definitely never pictured it, but now that it’s starting to get bigger it’s definitely surprised me,” Rathbun said. “I’m blown away that I won this last tournament; that was insane.”

Most recently, Rathbun traveled to Madison, Wisconsin, for the Mad City Open on June 18-19 and took 16th overall with an 8-under par for a score of 159.

The winner, Cale Leiviska, finished 26-under par for a 168.

Rathbun amassed enough amateur points and overall rating in the 2015 season to qualify for the PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships, which will take place July 9-16 in Madison. Rathbun took fourth in the World Championships last summer.

The 18-year-old was a three-sport athlete in football, wrestling and baseball for Oswego until an ACL injury forced him onto the sidelines after his sophomore year. Looking for another outlet, he pursued an earlier interest in disc golf.

“Going into my freshman year, I found my first Frisbee and just started throwing it around,” Rath-

bun recalled. “I started playing at Eagle Ridge at the Civic Center in Oswego. That’s where I was pretty much shown how to play, and I pretty much play there every day. The Midwest especially, disc golf is huge. The courses are becoming really packed and everyone is starting to play. I know tons of kids from our high school who have picked it up and go out all summer.”

Eagle Ridge is an 18-hole course and home to the Fox Valley Metro Disc Golf Club.

Rathbun graduated in December of 2015 and will spend the upcoming year working to make the switch to the professional class before deciding on college plans. He is currently sponsored by Innova Discs, which provides clothing and discs.

“I never thought that I’d get as serious as I have, but I’m a super competitive person so this works,” Rathbun said.
